Warriors #1: Into the Wild (Warriors: The Prophecies Begin), by Erin Hunter

From School Library Journal Grade 5 Up-Rusty, a young "kittypet" (house cat), yearns for adventure. When he's offered the chance to join the ThunderClan, one of the gangs of feral cats in the area, he doesn't hesitate. Renamed Firepaw, he becomes an apprentice and begins to train as a warrior. After rescuing Yellowfang, ex-medicine cat for the ShadowClan who has fled for her life, Firepaw and the other ThunderClan members find themselves in the middle of a turf war against the rival gang, led by the nefarious Brokenstar. There's a traitor in their midst, though, and Firepaw must learn more than just hunting and fighting to survive. The author has created an intriguing world with an intricate structure and mythology, and an engaging young hero. The supporting cast of players is large and a little confusing, but there are standouts who give dimension to the tale. The difficult life of a feral cat is described in some detail, and a fair amount of violence is included. The ending is left ambiguous-there is definitely more to come. This is not as elegantly written as Brian Jacques's "Redwall" series (Philomel), but it's another option for fans of animal adventure/fantasy stories.Mara Alpert, Los Angeles Public LibraryCopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Gr. 6-9. For generations, four clans of wild cats have shared the forest according to laws laid down by powerful ancestral clans. But now things are changing: ShadowClan has banished WindClan and is threatening RiverClan and ThunderClan by insisting on hunting rights within their territories. What's more, each year the TwoLegs encroach further into the forest, and prey is becoming scarce. A prophecy reveals, "Fire alone can save [the] Clan." Into this dangerous situation wanders a "kittypet," a young, bright orange tomcat whose courage earns him, despite objections by some, a place as an apprentice ThunderClan warrior and the new name of Firepaw. In this first spine-tingling episode in the planned Warriors series, Firepaw learns the ways of the wild life, facing many dangers and treachery both within and without his new clan. Intelligence notwithstanding, the cat characters are true to their feline nature, making this sure to appeal to fans of Clare Bell's long-popular Ratha's Creature (1983) and its sequels and also to followers of Brian Jacques' ongoing Redwall series. At the library where I work, I'd seen them taking out this "Warriors" series by Erin Hunter fairly regularly. For some reason it's near impossible to keep these puppies on the shelves. Curiosity got ahold of me, so I decided to sit down and read through the first of these somewhat odd stories. I would never have been able to guess that the secret lives of cats would be so interesting to children. Housecats, definitely not. But when it comes to the lives and loyalties of the feral variety, Hunter's definitely tapped into a rich resource of text.Rusty has a fairly good life. He lives with a family of humans (or Two-legs) that love him. He gets regular feedings, even if it's yucky dry stuff. He even has his own little cat door to come in and out of. Rusty isn't content, however. He dreams of catching mice in the forest not far from his home. When a night's exploration of that forest ends with a confrontation with the wild cats that live without human interference, Rusty readily joins them and their clan. Renamed "Firepaw", the cat learns that he has dropped smack dab into the middle of a war. The clan he has joined is called ThunderClan and is ruled by the magnanimous Bluestar. Other clans like RiverClan, WindClan, and ShadowClan fight continually for dominance over a rapidly dwindling food supply. ThunderClan needs recruits like Firepaw to stay alive, and through their training the new cat is on his way to becoming a warrior. Along the way he must face hunger, dismissal, and learn some shocking truths about the animals he's agreed to join.Hunter conjures up a well-thought out world in which cats have their own system of governance. This is a kind of "Watership Down", but with drawn out fighting sequences. The cats here act like cats. They don't put on vests and waistcoats and discuss philosophy. They don't stand on their hind legs or use their paws like fingers. These are real animals. For the sake of keeping them alive, Hunter does create a kind of Medicine Cat for each clan, who rubs natural herbs into wounds. That's about as technically adept as these kitties get. At the beginning of the book, the author presents us with two maps of the area where this book takes place. A cat-view map lists everything in their terms. A second human-view map makes it clear where exactly the cats actually are. This is not to say that the book isn't downright silly at times. Hunter loves giving these cats somewhat repetitive names like Nightpelt, Smallear, and Longtail. One cat, Lionheart, has the same name as a carebear from the 1980s. Poor planning on Hunter's part. She also falls into a classic children's literature trap. You know that when the main character has a vital piece of information that he should give someone as soon as possible and he says something along the lines of, "Oh good! Now I can tell this person this vital piece of information", that something's going to come up to prevent him. In this case, Firepaw is given to understand that a friend of his may be killed almost immediately. So does he immediately go out and tell the clan's wise leader? Heck no! He's given TWO chances to do so and each time he keeps quiet for obscure plot-centric reasons. That's really the kind of book that this is. It's fun to read, exciting, and with a new meticulously thought out world. It's also rather predictable. If you've a kid who's a fan of the "Redwall" series but is more interested in animals that don't wear clothing, this is the book for you. Both boys and girls check it out at a fast and furious rate. It's one of the few series out there that both sexes enjoy fully. A better written book than all the "Magic Treehouse" and "Droon" series out there combined but still less good than, say, Avi's, "Poppy" books or "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH".

My daughter lives for these books By Steven Kerrick My 9-year-old started the first book in the series a couple of months ago, and now she's read all of them at least once. She gets up in the morning and reads Warrior books instead of getting ready for school. She comes home and reads them instead of doing homework. She reads them at night instead of helping clean up dishes. She has organized her friends into clans. They have clan meetings and put clan marks all over the things in our back yard.I've read the first couple of the books, starting with Into the Wild, and I can see why she loves them. The characters are so well drawn that you feel like you really know them. They face real moral dilemmas and behave in complex ways. Erin Hunter does not talk down to her readers. There's humor but no silliness. Very good books. My daughter is in fourth grade, but she reads at sixth grade level. The reading level of these books is like 5.5 or 6.0. Great for anyone 5th grade or higher, and for the advanced 4th grader.

You'll Be Giving Your Cat Some Strange Looks By Caesar Warrington INTO THE WILD is the first volume of a large series of books in which writer Erin Hunter has conjured up an amazing world of feral cat tribes which struggle for survival literally right outside your own backyard! The saga begins here with Rusty, a domestic cat (or as wild cats call them, "kittypets") who longs to be out on his own, free, eating what he kills, sleeping where he wants. One night, while exploring the nearby woods, he encounters members of ThunderClan, one of four feline tribes that struggle with each other for dominance of the area. Treated with contempt and hostility in the beginning, Rusty proves himself by fighting for ThunderClan in their war against the aggressive ShadowClan. Renamed Firepaw, he is accepted into the tribe to become one of their fiercest warriors. This action-packed but intelligent book and subsequent volumes have delighted children, fantasy readers and cat lovers of all ages.

Warriors #2: Fire and Ice (Warriors: The Prophecies Begin), by Erin Hunter

From School Library Journal Grade 5 Up-After having left his life as a kittypet, apprentice Firepaw of the ThunderClan has been given his warrior name of Fireheart and his first mission-to find the WindClan and assist them back to their traditional hunting grounds. While he and his friend Graystripe are successful in their quest, Fireheart knows that trouble is brewing, and he isn't sure that the ThunderClan's deputy can be trusted. As events escalate, a warrior from RiverClan is accidentally killed, an apprentice is injured, and Fireheart brings into the Clan a kittypet kitten-his nephew-without thinking of the consequences. Finally, he must decide who to trust and who to fight. Readers not familiar with the first book may find this one hard to follow. Hunter provides a directory that tells which cats are in which clans, but it is cumbersome to flip back and forth. The characterizations of the animals are somewhat flat, although it is possible to tell them apart, and the plot's twists and turns seem mapped out and predictable. Librarians with a readership for Into the Wild (HarperCollins, 2003) will probably want this volume; others can pass.Lisa Prolman, Greenfield Public Library, MACopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Gr. 6-9. Firepaw, the former kittypet who became a ThunderClan warrior in Into the Wild [BKL F 15 03], faces danger and treachery within and without his clan as he struggles with his identity. Because some clan members refuse to accept him, he feels like an outsider. Also, it appears that ShadowClan and RiverClan are forming an alliance to usurp land belonging to the displaced WindClan. ThunderClan's leader sends Firepaw and his friend Graystripe to lead WindClan back to its home, but intrigue among the clans and among individuals within them spells trouble for Firepaw. Characters remain true to their feline natures, adding to the plausibility of events in this tension-filled story. Readers will be happy to learn that another episode is in the works. I enjoyed the new characters and the secrets between the Clans and Clan members. Not too long after Fireheart and Graystripe become warriors they get their first apprentices. Cinderpaw is Fireheart's apprentice, young, and energetic. When Cinderpaw gets hurt so badly that she may never be an apprentice, both cats are heart broken. But was her injury an accident or did someone want her to get hurt? There are separate loyalties in this book unlike Book One. Graystripe has fallen in love with a RiverClan cat. That is breaking the warrior code, which puts him and his clan on the line. Fireheart has caught up with his kitty pet sister and sees her when he can. Princess, his sister, gives him one of her own to be a member of ThunderClan. Will the young clan member obey by the warrior code or will the clan not accept him for who he is?Cat lovers, good readers, and both girls and boys would like this book. It would be best if you read Warrior I Into the Wild, first because you will understand it and enjoy it even more.

"Warriors" books a hit with homeschoolers By diana5981 A 12-year old female friend of my 11-year old son loaned him the first "Warriors" book, and he loved it so much that he used his Christmas money to buy the next three. He has read like a maniac (which is cool, since he hasn't really cared that much about reading until just recently), and has loaned all his books to his homeschool buddies. They have started calling each other by the book characters' names, and have enjoyed the sharing of the books tremendously. He pestered me until I bought the rest of the series, and he is in book heaven. I highly recommend these books for boys or girls, or even for adults who like to read children's books.

Out of Sight Till Tonight!: All About Nocturnal Animals (Cat in the Hat's Learning Library), by Tish Rabe

From School Library Journal Gr 1–3—The Cat in the Hat (featured in the PBS kids series The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!) is back with light facts about nocturnal animals. He wakes two children, Sally and Dick, and invites them to board his convertible three-wheel hovercraft to "meet some of the critters that come out at night." The Cat discusses the reasons why some creatures are active in the dark. Through accessible, rhyming text, Rabe describes topics such as habitat, mating habits, and physical adaptations (for instance, the large ear holes that allow owls to hear their prey both above and below ground). Text boxes define words such as nocturnal and diurnal and provide pronunciation guides. Though the cartoon illustrations portray the activities of the various animals realistically, they are recognizably Seuss-like and will engage fans. VERDICT This simple and useful overview will bolster juvenile nonfiction easy reader collections.—Nancy Call, Santa Cruz Public Libraries, Aptos, CA

I am happy to say that this had just the same reaction with our little one when we got it for his birthday. he enjoyed the initial reading of the book and it has inspired him to ask a lot of other questions about the information in the book, which is just what we wanted to happen when we bought him this

She is learning so much from this collection and Cat in the Hat makes it fun too. This book is all about nocturnal animals and your child will just love it as it will teach them all about the animals of the night. This is a really great book that you and your child will love to read again and again.

At once sobering and inspiring, here is the true tale of a World War I cavalry soldier and his heroic horse, Midnight.Guy Haydon raised and trained Midnight from the time she was a foal. The two had such a strong bond that when World War I broke out, Lieutenant Haydon slipped away from the frontlines of Gallipoli on an Egypt-bound ship to reunite with his horse. There, in the city of Beersheba, on October 31, 1917, two regiments of the Australian Light Horse Brigade took part in one of the last great cavalry charges in history. Among the first to leap the enemy trenches was Lieutenant Guy Haydon, riding Midnight—who succumbed to a bullet that might have otherwise killed her rider. In a new story from an award-winning duo, luminous illustrations and lyrical narration bring a sad moment in history to life.

Midnight: A True Story of Loyalty in World War I, by Mark Greenwood

From School Library Journal K-Gr 4—This gorgeous picture book tells the story of a black foal named Midnight and his owner, Guy, who headed off together to the cavalry in World War I. They were separated in Egypt, when only soldiers were needed on the Turkish coast, but Guy returned as soon as he could to find Midnight. He succeeded, and they began desert patrol together near Beersheba where Midnight was killed in one of the last great cavalry charges of history, saving her rider. The battles aren't depicted graphically (there's no blood seen, just a few bodies on stretchers). The style of the writing and illustrations look ideal for younger readers, but most children this age will have only limited knowledge of World War I. VERDICT Presented with some context, this book may make a suitable addition for historical units.—Dorcas Hand, Annunciation Orthodox School, Houston, TX

By Bob Walch Based on a true story from World War I this tale about an Australian horse and the battle of Beersheba may not be for all readers. The horse is killed in the charge and many young children will have a hard time accepting that fact. For older children this book underscores the senselessness of war and the fact that good people and animals sacrifice their lives on the battlefield.

When WWI comes to Australia, Guy Haydon and his horse midnight join the fight. They become separated but eventually find each other in the hot desert sands of northern Africa. They experience some harsh conditions and eventually find themselves in one of the last great cavalry charges of all time to capture the city of Beersheba. A very poignant and moving story about sacrifice, honor, and the bond between a man and his horse. It reminded me of WARHORSE, but with a very different outcome.

The only drawback to the book was the ending. I knew the horse would perish which was gently portrayed. It ended suddenly and I would have wished a last drawing showing the horse's soul or a memory of the horse whispered in the wind.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. creative fantasy By Rachel Horon When it comes to creativity and imaginative stories, this book truly meets that criteria. It is great when thinking about the point of view of the things we use every day and how they would feel if they could tell someone about it. What would you do if your bed expressed its opinion or your bathroom had eyes? How he comes to being by himself and making his peculiar wish is a mystery, yet important to the story. Still, it has a beautiful theme of taking chances and stepping outside of your comfort zone in order to make friends.
