I See a Pattern Here, by Bruce Goldstone

From School Library Journal Gr 2–4—This attractive picture book is a colorful addition for general collections but can be used to expand a math or social studies library. Relying on a conversational tone and using relatable examples from a wide variety of cultures, the author draws in readers easily as he discusses concepts related to patterns while also tying in social studies, nature, and math vocabulary. Strategically placed questions ("What flips can you find in these patterns?") will engage kids further (an answer key is included at the end). Children are introduced to a wide variety of concepts: math-related ones, such as symmetry and reflection, as well as those that are tied to specific cultures—African mud cloths or the Pantheon's dome in Rome. Bold, striking photographs of everyday objects, such as tiles, mosaics, bee hives, animals, cars, cathedrals, and seashells are used to support the text. Informational text boxes titled "MathSpeak" provide greater detail throughout on topics such as symmetry and scaling. An excellent overview.—Tracey Wong, P.S. 54/Fordham Bedford Academy, Bronx, NY

This book looks at some of them, such as sliding, rotating, flipping, squishing, and stretching. Photos show examples of different types of patterns occurring in nature and works of art from around the world. “MathSpeak” boxes give mathematical terms for the different ways patterns are created. The last two pages show ways to create patterns of your own. Grades K-3.Pros: An excellent introduction to patterns that could be used for both math and art. The pages are appealing with plenty of white space between the colorful photos.Cons: Although patterns seem cool and fun, I never really understood why they were emphasized quite so much in the elementary math curriculum

Sat on his book shelf until he got to this book in this series. So now we are stuck with damaged goods. Amazon only allows ~ 45 days for returns! So the one star is for product quality, not story quality!

Even without the abrupt ending, I didn't t enjoy this second book of the series quite as much as the first. I am still pondering whether I should throw more money at the final third.

Good follow-up to "The Menagerie," with some minor annoyances By Kenya Starflight WARNING: Review contains minor spoilers. The first book in the "Menagerie" series -- the story of a special reserve for mythical creatures in Xanadu, Wyoming -- was an enjoyable enough story, even if it didn't quite reach the levels of epicness that made "Fablehaven" such a hit. I see it as a good stepping-stone book, one great for kids who might not be quite ready for "Fablehaven" or "Harry Potter." The book did manage to resolve its main conflict -- the missing gryphon cubs -- but at the same time it ended on a blatant and annoying cliffhanger/sequel hook. I figured the unanswered questions about the goings-on in both the Menagerie and the main character's life would be enough to get people to read the next book, but apparently the author felt otherwise...The second book in the series, "Dragon On Trial," suffers from some of the same problems as the first book. But it's still a fun read, full of both new and familiar mythical creatures and told with a rollicking sense of fun and adventure.Logan, newcomer to Xanadu, and Zoe, daughter of the caretakers of the Menagerie, have just managed to avert crisis and save both the gryphon cubs and the sanctuary... only to immediately discover that Pelly, the golden-egg-laying goose whose precious eggs keep the Menagerie operating, has been murdered. Despite only blood and feathers (but no body) to point to the grisly crime, all evidence seems to implicate Scratch, one of the three dragons living at the Menagerie. If Scratch is found guilty, he will be executed... and the Menagerie will be shut down. Logan, Zoe, and Zoe's foster/merman brother Blue have to uncover the culprit and save the Menagerie, with a little help from the arrogant kitsune Keiko and a rowdy family of were-creatures. And to further complicate matters, Zoe's brother has been acting very strangely since coming home from Tracker training, Logan's dad seems to be hiding secrets about his mom, and the school librarian is up to something fishy that could doom the Menagerie...Like its predecessor, this book's writing is serviceable but not great, focused on telling the story and fairly bland when it comes to descriptions and word-play. The characters, however, make up for it -- Sutherland has a knack for conversations, and some of the best passages come from the banter and bickering between characters. And the characters manage to be interesting and not fall into the usual stereotypes -- Logan is likable and one can't help but want to root for him. The were-creature family are some of the best minor characters, and my favorite scene in the book comes from an unexpected visit to their chaotic home. The book also includes plenty of creature action, from the well-known beasts like dragons and unicorns to some letter-known beasts like the qui-lin. Sutherland hits the right balance with these creatures as well, keeping true to the most prominent traits of the myths but also giving the creatures some clever twists of her own. The dragons can be difficult to understand, as their speech patterns read like the Hulk took language classes from Yoda, but this is a minor annoyance.Like its predecessor, however, I'm a bit annoyed that this book manages to resolve the immediate conflict, only to throw in a last-minute cliffhanger and sequel hook. I thought there were plenty of unanswered questions that would still hold readers' interest in the inevitable third book, but evidently the author felt that without a cliffhanger ending, no one would want to read the next book. Don't underestimate your readers, Sutherland... if you make your story and characters compelling enough, you won't have to resort to cheap tricks like cliffhangers to keep your audience reading. Not the best book I've read this year, this book is still fun to read, and I enjoyed the world and characters a great deal. I do hope the next book answers a few more questions, and that the author grows out of her tendency to toss in a cliffhanger at the last minute. Only time will tell...

P. Zonka Lays An Egg, by Julie Paschkis

From School Library Journal K-Gr 3—While other hens lay eggs regularly and the rooster crows encouragement, P. Zonka wanders through the farmyard observing the world around her. The hen marvels at the grass and sky and urges her friends to appreciate the flowers. After they persuade her to try to lay an egg, she produces a spectacular multicolored creation, incorporating patterns that she has seen and imagined. The artistic chicken's name is no accident. An author's note explains that a pysanka is a Ukrainian decorated egg. Vibrant watercolor illustrations bring to mind folk-art decor and Chagall paintings. They burst from the pages to draw viewers in to share P. Zonka's delight with the colors and patterns of her world. The oversize format lends itself to read-aloud participation with follow-up decoration of real or paper eggs. Although Paschkis does not mention the tie of pysanka to Easter, those who want to make the connection to another culture's Easter egg painting could also use Katherine Milhous's The Egg Tree, the 1951 Caldecott winner. VERDICT A first-rate selection for most collections.—Kathy Piehl, Minnesota State University Library, Mankato

Review "[A] tale of the dividends of daydreaming, beautifully enhanced by colors and designs that shout "Spring!" to a winter-weary world. Charming, unusual and sure to induce smiles."— Kirkus, Starred Review

"A lyrical and lushly illustrated allegory about creativity and taking time to notice beauty."— Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

"Vibrant watercolor illustrations ... burst from the pages to draw viewers in to share P. Zonka's delight with the colors and patterns of her world. A first-rate selection."— School Library Journal, Starred Review

"If every picture book is a little world unto itself, P. Zonka Lays an Egg is a place where the skies are forever bright and all things radiate delicious hues."— The Wall Street Journal

"This ranks along books such as Leo Lionni's 'Frederick' (1968) that celebrate artistic dreaminess over conformity and remind us that good things are worth waiting for."— Booklist Online

"P. Zonka's lesson is gently delivered: take time to produce something you will be proud of."— The Horn Book Magazine

About the Author Julie Paschkis grew up in Pennsylvania and attended Cornell University and the School for American Craftsmen at RIT, where she earned a BFA. Julie, a former elementary school art teacher, now works full-time painting, creating commercial illustrations, and illustrating children's books.

Zonka Lays an Egg by Julie PaschkisSummary: All the hens in the henhouse lay eggs on a very regular basis. They’re proud of their accomplishments, and can’t understand why P. Zonka refuses to produce anything. Instead, she wanders around admiring the flowers and the sky. Finally, the other hens call her on it and insist that she try to lay an egg. They don’t think she can do it, but much to their surprise, not only does she lay one, but it is beautifully striped and patterned with many colors. P. Zonka never becomes a regular egg layer, but when she does lay one, it is always beautiful and unique, and the hens treat her with new respect.Pros: This is a story that celebrates dreamers and artists. The productive, hardworking citizens of the henhouse are seen as a bit bossy and self-righteous, while the one who seems to be doing nothing is actually fully engaged in an artistic process. On another level, this story and its illustrations are a good introduction to pysanka egg decorating.Cons: The message seemed a little bit heavy-handed to me.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Charming Story Child Will Love By L. M. Keefer Why doesn't P. Zonka lay eggs? Maud, Nadine and Dora are normal hens. They lay eggs regularly. But P. Zonka is a dreamer. She wanders around the yard and soaks in the beauty of the red tulips, the orange cat with one blue eye, the sky at midnight, and the cherry blossoms. P. Zonka drinks all of that in and one day lays an egg. Wait until you see it! I love this book. The illustrations are charming and colorful. This would make a great book for the spring, or any time of year. Wonderful for children ages 3-8. It uses some lyrical vocabulary, but the plot is easy to understand. Great for a span of ages.

ZONKA LAYS AN EGG by Julie Paschkis tells the charming story of a daydreaming chicken who lays a spectacular egg.The other hens in the chicken yard can’t figure out why their friend spends her time observing the natural world rather than laying eggs, so they’re shocked when one day she lays a beautifully designed, multicolored egg.Designed for ages 3 through 7, Paschkis’ colorful folk art style inspired by Ukrainian eggs designs will appeal to young readers. The simple, easy-to-understand picture book story focusing on the value of creativity and the beauty of nature will be appreciated by readers of all ages. The book is a great addition to the library’s collection of Spring and Easter-themed books. This publication is a result of a wide and accurate research and great love. Pastor Riccardo Alicino, author of this book, shows his love for the great city of Rome searching for its roots, its history, the many shapes of its changing spiritual character. He also shows the historical facts which, since its origins, have connected the person of Jesus Christ and the Church of the apostles to Rome, a city radically pagan and the capital of the Empire. The aim of this publication is to portray Rome, the City of the Seven Hills, as we take a geographical-spiritual walk, illuminated by the Word of God. The writer doesn’t consider mere coincidence that Rome - and the Roman Empire - have always been on the scene with regards to the development of Christianity including its future. Because of this, the reader will walk through a landscape from which comes the awakening of the conscience and of the true faith that gave life to the church of the Apostles: Jesus was born in Palestine, a Roman province; the Apostle Paul lived out his last days in the heart of the Empire; Martin Luther, son of the Roman Church, received the glimmer of illumination that later laid the foundations of the Protestant Reformation in Rome. Also in Rome, seat of the Roman Catholic Church, the most extraordinary Jubilee in the history of Christianity was celebrated in the Year 2000, the beginning of the Third Millennium of the Christian era. And now, at the end of 2015, we will witness an Extraordinary Jubilee, as Pope Francis has just announced, that will be held of course…in Rome! Behind the monuments, the memories and the feasts of yesterday and today, the author foresees the spiritual powers that steer historical, cultural and religious events, of which Rome is the protagonist. In reality, behind the triumphant backdrop that deifies human virtues, the author discovers ancient and occult plots that especially oppress the existential research of salvation, truth, freedom, peace and prosperity of man. Alicino reveals in the book his love for the land over which the Lord gave him a duty to pray for God’s Kingdom to come, and, the pledge to protect it from the negative spiritual influences of darkness that have affected the city through the generations. The book contains rich information as a textbook for Bible study, it is a manual of reference. Further to its academic value, it may also serve as a strategic “battle plan”, to pray through the spiritual influences that have shaped Europe. Long, long ago, yesterday, and today, it is not over … with the Vatican still being a center, a gateway of spiritual influence of global proportions. Rome remains, to this day, one of the most strategic battlegrounds of prayer and intercession in the world. Yes, Rome is till today, a city to love!

DAddeo This book is a fascinating account of the historical significance of the city of Rome from the time of Christ and the early church, up through its influence in the present day, as well as Rome’s likely role in the fulfillment of prophecy still yet to come. The author (Riccardo Alicino) uses scripture references to illuminate the impact that Rome has had on the spread of the gospel around the world. He boldly confronts the sinful tendency to exalt the created above The Creator and he uses scripture to masterfully point the reader back to the person of Jesus Christ and to His saving work on the cross for the redemption of his bride, the church.

While I am admittedly not the "Zombie" or "Sci-fi" type, this book hit me on many levels that I did not at first expect. The larger metaphors and deeper meanings behind chapter will make you think about your life in connection to this tale. While it is a fun read, the intricate descriptions of each character actually puts you into the story. Definitely, 100% recommended read, and I sincerely hope this becomes a series! I'd love to see where the characters could go in the future!

Every time the little girl leaves the house, her mother offers her some important advice:

“Don’t forget your crown.”

The little girl hears these words often as she grows up. Her crown is a special gift —an invisible reminder that she is loved, special, and deserves to be treated with respect, just as she respects others.

In The Crown, author and child therapist Jami Stanforth introduces girls to the concept of self-worth and its importance throughout life. As the little girl in the story grows into a teenager, her mother provides gentle lessons she can use to navigate through the turbulent years of adolescence and into early adulthood.

Following this charmingly illustrated tale, Stanforth offers parents suggestions and practical tips for developing their own child’s self-worth, which differs from self-esteem. Self-esteem is based on characteristics and criteria that can change and therefore, can fluctuate over time. Self-worth—the knowledge that you are special, lovable and worthy without having to do anything, be anything or achieve anything— can remain constant if taught and nurtured.

Help your daughter find her own crown. She’ll wear it for the rest of her life.

The Babies and Doggies Book, by John Schindel, Molly Woodward

Review "The combination of charming kids and adorable dogs creates an appealing board book for little ones."—Kirkus "Written in rhyming and near-rhyming couplets, the upbeat verses do a good job of pointing out similarities, but the crisp, colorful photos of babies (and sometimes toddlers) and their canine counterparts steal the show."—Booklist

About the Author John Schindel got his start in children's media in film production, and has gone on to write more than twenty books for children. Among them is the fourteen-book BUSY series of photo-illustrated board books about busy animals, which he created with Tricycle Press. He lives in Oakland, California.   Molly Woodward is a freelance editor who began working with John in her former role as editor at Tricycle Press. The idea for a babies and doggies book was inspired by her daughter's love of looking at photos of babies and of animals. John and Molly wondered why where weren't more books with photos of both, and The Babies and Doggies Book was born. She lives with her family in Berkeley, California.

17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Oxytocin in a Kiddie Book By Flash Although a seemingly simple book - a professor friend of mine reported, " I read it in one sitting!", the psychological subtext is quite profound. This may not have been Mr. Schindel and Ms. Woodward's intentions when creating the book, but they were prescient and definitely onto something scientific. In a recent NY Times article published long after the book went to press, The Look of Love Is in the Dog’s Eyes (April 16, 2015), research shows the emission of the feel-good hormone, oxytocin in dogs (but not wolves!) when dogs look into human's eyes. They discovered a similar buzz and chemical release in humans bonding with dogs (not cats). The article goes on to compare this to the gaze of a baby, and the matching gaga effect (oxytocin) in a parent, pop pop, etc. Total Feel Goods for everyone! (I personally think it’s responsible for the beautiful, cloying obsession new grandfathers and grandmothers have for grandbabies). So, the brilliance of this little tome is that it presents both dog and baby here, thus giving double whammy to baby and Mom Mom /Pop Pop reading it, looking at the eyes of the babies and doggies, and then looking at each other..., every time they read it together. Triple whammie! The study in the Times concludes:“We don’t know what the dog’s gaze means. When you look at a human baby, it feels good. Maybe dogs gaze at you because it feels good. Maybe the dogs are hugging you with their eyes?”This little book gets reader and readee hugging each other, eyes and arms, bonding in a very subtle, scientifically-proven way. Bravo!!
