Orangutanka: A Story in Poems, by Margarita Engle

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—A sprightly introduction to orangutans through nimble wordplay and attractive book design. Kurilla's pen-and-ink illustrations frame Engle's tanka verses, which relate a simple story of an orangutan family in an animal sanctuary in Borneo. Massive papa, whose "great weight makes/low branches waltz slowly" and mama, baby, inquisitive big sister, and watchful grandma live an idyllic existence amid the tall trees. Child-friendly verse evokes the habitat and should have wide appeal: "Imagine/rain forest music—/insects/buzz, zoom, and hum/while green leaves swish." Teachers will also appreciate the page of orangutan facts, where they can find print and online suggestions for further reading. Readers learn that the long-term outlook for this species of gentle primates is in doubt as deforestation threatens their rainforest habitats in Borneo and Sumatra. Engle also includes a note describing tanka poetry, an ancient Japanese format; the modern form is unrhymed and consists of five lines (short, long, short, long, long) of linked poems. She concludes by inviting children to write their own poems and dance like orangutans "with energetic arms and legs." This well-crafted book, with its accomplished verses and smattering of facts, should earn a wide audience.—Marilyn Taniguchi, Beverly Hills Public Library, CA

Kids will love the Orangutans in this Tanka Filled Beauty By Sue Morris @ Kid Lit Reviews Orangutanka = Orangutans + TankaTanka is a Japanese five-line poem with a specific syllable count of 5 in the first line, 7 in the second, 5 in the third, and 7 in the fourth and fifth. Engle doesn’t use this traditional arrangement. She uses a “loose line length” of short, long, short, long, long. In a note before the story begins, Engle explains more about tanka poems. Orangutanka reads like a visitors observation log, as she watches the orangutans throughout the day. Each tanka is linked to the next, creating the story of one non-sleepy orangutan who loves to dance. The dancing theme resonates through each spread. One reason I love Orangutanka is the illustration work of Kurilla. Her orangutans are beautiful reddish-orange and brown masses of smiles and contentment. The eyes of each orangutan give the creatures’ additional emotion. I cannot imagine anyone taking in Kurilla’s forest of orangutans and not smiling at the beautiful creatures. The images remind me of the dense monkey filled rainforests of Costa Rico. The author explains, in back matter, most orangutans that survive are doing so in wildlife sanctuaries and rescues. Engle explained it is the logging and the deforestation for (mostly), farming that is destroying the orangutans’ (and other animals’) habitats. Engle includes several resources for those interested in knowing more about orangutans and their plight.Orangutanka is a fun, beautiful, emotional, poetic, and important story for the orangutans. Kids will enjoy the story of a day in a Borneo forest and of big sister and grandma dancing in the rain together. They will love the pencil and ink illustrations, digitally colored in rain forest browns, greens, reddish-orange, and pale blues. The opportunity to learn more about the tanka—traditional and modern—and about orangutans, makes Orangutanka a good book for teachers of English and science. The Orangutanka orangutans are beautiful and humorous, which will appeal to kids, especially those that love animals. Engle’s energetic poetry and her concern for these beautiful creatures combined with Kurilla’s dynamic illustrations will appeal to both readers and award committees. If this were April—Poetry Month—Orangutanka: A Story in Poems would be my top pick.Originally reviewed at Kid Lit Reviews/received from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Simple, yet satisfying – written with heart By micdeebee Written in a contemporary style of the Japanese tanka form, this simple yet satisfying story of an orangutan family comes alive with vivid language and playful illustrations by Renée Kurilla. Children will enjoy seeing how similar these lovable apes are to humans. Teachers and parents will appreciate the opportunity to introduce "Orangutan Facts" described at the back of the book, not the least of which is their critically endangered status. The back matter also includes recommended resources to learn more about orangutans. It seems that no matter what age group Margarita Engle is writing for, there are common themes amongst her books:1. A love of nature2. Some aspect of freedom3. Giving voice to the underrepresented – the "forgotten" ones whose stories need to be told. While ORANGUTANKA may not be based on a historical figure like many of her other books, Ms. Engle is no less passionate about her topic or her cause. Besides her sensory-rich language (which I am prone to drool over), this is one of the things that I like best about her books: she is driven to shine a light on others – human or otherwise.

There are a few words he struggles with (names), but this is a high interest book for a young boy. He is reading the history of the Avengers at his level and that is hard to find for this age. Most other similar books are too high or too low.

'Renton Maclachlan has written what I regard as an outstanding contribution to the literature on this subject. I highly recommend this book.' Dr Ronald Nash, Professor of Philosophy and Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary, Orlando, Florida, and, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky. USA The thesis of 'Tongues Revisited: A Third Way' is: That Biblical Tongues are normal human languages, normally learnt and normally spoken. Glossa (Greek) = tongue = language Acts 2 Acts 2 clearly refers to normal human languages being spoken, and these were spoken directly to the hearers without interpretation/translation required. Were these normal human languages normally spoken - that is having been learnt through normal means and thus already known to the speakers before the events described, or supernaturally spoken - that is unlearnt and unknown to the speakers prior to that time, the speakers having received a supernatural ability to speak languages they had not learnt? It is assumed by most that whatever languages the disciples spoke, they spoke without having learnt them. However, the text does not say this anywhere. It is proposed the disciples already knew the languages they spoke that day and had acquired them through the normal means of language learning. It is also proposed the languages spoken by the disciples that day numbered only two or three. It is geographical regions encompassing both the Eastern and Western Diaspora of the Jews, and ethnic groups, which are listed, not languages. Further, it is proposed a cultural/linguistic factor called a 'diglossia' was at work in the situation. The enabling of the Spirit was to overcome the effects of this diglossia. In brief, the term diglossia refers to a situation where several languages are used in the culture, but are reserved for distinctly different roles. One language will most likely be the language of ceremony and learning - the 'high' language. The other language (perhaps 'languages') being the everyday vernacular - the 'low' language/s. William Tyndale was burnt at the stake for violating a diglossia, by translating the Bible from Latin (high language) into English (low language). It is proposed a diglossia prevailed in 1st Century Israel with Hebrew as the high language - the 'Holy Tongue', and Aramaic and Greek being the 'low' languages - Aramaic being the primary language of Israel and the Eastern Diaspora, and Greek being the language of the Western Diaspora. Acts 10 Acts 10 describes a meeting of people in a multilingual situation. There was at least one shared language, presumably Aramaic, but also a non-shared language, presumably Latin. Peter heard some speech he understood (in Aramaic) and some speech he did not understand…Romans talking among themselves in Latin. From the speech that he understood, he deduced Cornelius and friends (non-Jews) had become believers, and if so, they had received the Holy Spirit. This was a severe cultural challenge to Peter and the other Jewish believers in Jerusalem, and is why the Lord prepared Peter by giving him a vision, and why Peter had to defend himself before a church council. 1 Corinthians 12-14 It is proposed the situation being addressed in 1 Corinthians 12-14 (in particular chapter 14), was simply how to edify the multilingual Corinthian church. It is also proposed there was underlying ethnic tension in this church (thus the need for chapter 13) which expressed itself in the way various languages were viewed, and used in their meetings. The approach taken enables several of the perennial problem texts in 1 Corinthians 14 to be resolved in very straightforward ways. Revelation The word 'glossa' is used eight times in the book of Revelation. On seven of those occasions it clearly refers to normal human languages, normally learnt and normally spoken. 'Tongues Revisited: A Third Way' applies that same idea consistently to every other usage of the term in the

This is a gold mine...an outstanding exposition on the true nature of Biblical tongues. Take it from an ex-charismatic who spoke in "tongues" for nearly 20 years…and pushed the doctrine to its logical conclusion. The author's explanation of the "other tongues" of Acts 2 is revolutionary…and right on. The historical cultural context has been completely overlooked by contemporary theologians and exegetes. Every other passage on the subject is covered by the author with equally great discernment. Here's some quick insight into just how far off the charismatic church is on the subject. When Paul said in 1 Cor 14:4 that "he who speaks in an unknown tongue [language] edifies himself," he wasn’t exhorting church members to practice some private prayer language for personal edification. The statement, left in context, carries the exact opposite tone. Paul was correcting their childish understanding and ignorance of spiritual things. "I could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, and as unto babes in Christ." (1 Cor. 3:1) He just got done, in chap 13, speaking about love, and how it seeks not its own. On the heels of that, in chapter 14, he proceeds to make an argument for speaking in church in a way others present can understand and be edified by. In the midst of making that argument he says, “he who speaks in an unknown tongue [language] edifies *himself.” In other words, "you are edifying yourself when you should be edifying the church.” It was a word of correction. He was promoting order in the church. Speak so others can understand and be edified. That’s it. There’s no hidden message advocating a private prayer language. Paul spoke several languages, and always chose the one his audience could understand, and hence be edified by.Having been trapped in contemporary dogma on this subject for so long, I can’t recommend this work too highly. There’s no need to be ignorant or confused on the subject any longer. Many will choose their contemporary, free-vocalization “experience” over the rightly divided Word of God. That’s unfortunate. But it’s not because the author here didn’t do an excellent and exhaustive job of reconciling the subject with the rest of the Word of God and avoiding contradictions and self-refuting statements. (Note: This is not about cessationism.)In the early 20th century, a group of people in Topeka, KS sought for a sign, and for the gift of tongues. They missed the mark. This book brings us back on course.

By Amazon Customer Let me just put is simply, finally after 100 plus years of Pentecostal confusion and delusion, sanity prevails on this subject. Maclachlan's interpretation reconciles St. Paul's seemingly contradictory statements; "I speak in tongues more than you all" and "I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue." After many years of study on the subject and coming to the same conclusion, I found this book to put it all in perspective with irrefutable reasoning and scholarly research. Hopefully this book will prove the deliverance of many a "tonguer."

By Sue Morris @ Kid Lit Reviews If you are looking for difficult, challenging, hard to break Sudoku puzzles forget this book. It claims to be challenging but the puzzles can be quickly completed without much note taking or brain wracking. If you really want a truly difficult Sudoku book, get the Nasty Sudoku puzzles books one through four. Each book gets harder and even book one will keep you working hard at the answer. I have been through the Nasty Sudoku books twice and working on my third time and have yet been able to complete every puzzle. These 4 books are the only Sudoku books I have found to be truly difficult and a challenge. Not even the "Mensa" books are difficult. I found them to be relatively easy.

Dino-Mike By Autumn Fallen Over Book Reviews We received this book via NetGalley to give an honest review. So K actually got this father to read up to chapter 8 with him before bedtime. And I got to read the rest of the book and find out the ending. But I then decided I would go back and read up to chapter 8 so I could find out what was going on. This is a pretty cool book. We have Mike who is on a dinosaur dig with his father, how awesome is that for a young kid to be able to dig up dinosaurs. Well while they are on this dig, Mike's father gives him this awesome dinosaur jacket that lights up, makes sounds and even looks like the skin of a dinosaur. K decided he wanted me to learn how to make him one. While on this dig site, Mike ends up actually finding a real life dinosaur and that is when the whole fun begins. Mike ends up meeting someone who has come to put the T-Rex back in its time period. Shannon and Mike set up a trap, drive a hot dog truck only to have a villain not a really horrible villain but one none the less. Jurassic Jeff who wants to let the T-Rex run free in our world. So it is up to Shannon and Mike to send the T-Rex back and it seems like it is more work than it is fun to actually meet a dinosaur. Will the succeed? Or will Jurassic Jeff end up sabotaging the hard work that Shannon and Mike do to send the T-Rex back to his own time? There are illustrations within the book that I thought was great to have so it captures the attention of the young readers. And the pictures are drawn fantastical or so I thought. The writing was well written, and I could see maybe 2nd graders reading this book by themselves.Overall a great short chapter book that I think children from age 6 on up would really enjoy.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Dinosaurs rule reading! By Splashes Into Books Michael Evans is one of the heroes in this story. He’s the son of a famous palaeontologist who travels the world in search of dinosaur fossils. He’s off on an expedition with him in this story but whilst his dad looks for bones, Mike ends up on an adventure of his own, is chased by a T.Rex, meeting two mysterious children who are definitely not working together and earns himself the new nickname of Dino-Mike!The book uses easy to read vocabulary, making it ideal for the target age range of 6 to 8 years old but is also interesting enough for older children to enjoy it, too. The book is beautifully illustrated throughout, enhancing its appeal to children. It is also great that there are two heroes in the story - one male and one female, helping make the story appeal to both genders.A thoroughly enjoyable, well paced adventure story for children who are beginning to read longer books independently. Teachers, this could be a great book for inspiring children who are starting to read independently but are not really interested in doing so. The chapters are short but well structured and will encourage the children to want to read more. Thanks to the author, publishers and NetGalley, too, for letting me read an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Barrington Black was for many years one of the UK's best-known criminal defence lawyers and founder of a solicitor's firm in Leeds now commemorated in the name of a practice known as Black's. He was later a Metropolitan Stipendiary Magistrate and Circuit Judge in the Crown Court before becoming a Supreme Court Justice in Gibraltar. Both Sides of the Bench charts his life, legal and judicial progress and his contributions as legal expert to such programmes as BBC TV's Look North and Yorkshire Television's Calendar. Always in demand due to his reputation as a reliable defence solicitor, he was sought out by among others the serial killer Donald Neilson also known as the Black Panther as well as being involved in other high profile cases. His accounts of these and other fascinating cases from his life as a lawyer and judge form the main part of this compelling book which also looks at his early life, political ambitions and time in the army when he was also involved in Courts Martial. It also takes readers behind the scenes to show what it is like to establish and run a legal practice as it grows and develops and contains insights into the normally private and behind the scenes world of judiciary.

Welcome By Phillip Taylor MBE A WELCOME SERIES OF OPINIONS FROM AN EXPERIENCED LAWYER AND JUDGEAn appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green ChambersThe library of modern legal biographies continues to grow, and to swell the library shelves there is a new book from Waterside entitled “Both Sides of the Bench” which all potential lawyers might find useful to read. There was a time not so long ago when it was frowned upon for member of the judiciary to ‘speak their mind’. Some contemporaries of Barrington Black did so much to the consternation of senior legal politicians until recently. Fortunately, there are now many more books from living judges explaining their professional lives and how they go about their daily business and we thank them for that.Such works are of great benefit to everyone because we can get to understand these decision-makers once they are stripped of their wigs and mystique. So, we have here an excellent set of views and opinions from a leading well-known and controversial lawyer of our time: Barrington Black- even today well known also for his pithy contemporary comments. This highly readable autobiography charters the contemporary history of the bench and the bar from 1950s onwards so it covers a substantial part of 20th century and goes well into this century. We feel that Black offers some useful opinions on many of the cases and issues of the day… and we are better for it because the reader can see where his point of view comes from!Barrington Black who, today, is probably well known to the younger Bar as a popular correspondent in “The Times” letters column comes from Harrogate, and practised in Leeds so there is a certain amount of the ‘bluff Yorkshireman’ about him which one can relish because a spade really is a spade and not a shovel to him… and rightly so.The story starts right at the beginning with Black describing himself as “never an idealist”. There are some splendid and sensitive family photographs throughout his career which gives one the measure of the man covering his interesting background as a solicitor and his experiences in the army which clearly had a marked effect on his future, as it does with most people.Black’s experiences and anecdotes from the legal profession comprise the bulk of the book and his final comment at the end on legal aid just about sums up the predicament ‘the law’ is going through today with the end of legal aid as we know it.The view of many is that the Young Bar is in crisis and falling so Black’s final comment sums up a massive problem we are building up: “where will the judges come from”. To us, this one final comment, worrying as it is, is spot on for if younger barristers and solicitors do not gain the experience in the lower courts where we learn our trade a huge judicial chasm will develop. Such fundamental training in one’s early legal career remains the function of the young advocate and will not be revived unless the decline at the junior end of the profession is halted, so what Black says is right.Otherwise, indeed, where will our future judges come from- that is the message of Black’s excellent legal reminiscences which we thank him for?

The Smoking Mirror (Garza Twins) (Volume 1), by David Bowles

Review "The Smoking Mirror is realistically embedded in adolescent situations, such as bullying, sibling friendship and rivalry, parental loss, and fear of narcoviolence, while developing fantastical scenarios, such as gaining supernatural abilities, descending into the underworld, and battling creatures from Aztec and Mayan mythologies. Published only in English, the novel includes dialogue, songs and chants in Spanish. The sequel forthcoming in 2016 is eagerly anticipated." --Bookbird: A Journal of International Children's Literature"Bowles really knows his stuff, being a scholar who translates Nahuatl poetry. He also knows how to tell an exciting story. There are places in the book where I could smell Mexico. Kids will love this Orpheus-like journey of a brother and sister, as they discover their shape-shifting nagual-powers, into an Aztec/Mayan underworld to find their mother. And they have fantastic adventures among places, things, and creatures the likes of which Harry Potter never encountered. And Tezcatlipoca himself showes up. It's cleverly packaged with manga-like art." --La Bloga"Bowles creates an action-packed story based on Aztec and Mayan mythology while capturing the realities of life in contemporary South Texas and Mexico." --Pura Belpré Award Committee"With his new novel The Smoking Mirror, South Texas author David Bowles is helping to fill what amounts to an ethnic gap in mythology-oriented adventure literature for middle-grade readers by exploring the Aztec underworld, Mictlan. He's created a rollercoaster narrative that fascinates, educates and (almost inevitably) terrifies." --San Antonio Express News"The Smoking Mirror is an entertaining adventure story that moves at a quick pace and features a memorable and underrepresented mythology."--Rich in Color

From the Back Cover "A wild, magical adventure into an ancient world...emotional and mystical!" --Guadalupe Garcia McCall, award-winning author of Under the Mesquite and Summer of the Mariposas "If you're looking for a Latino Percy Jackson, this is it." --Jason Henderson, author of Ben 10: Volume 1, Incredible Hulk: Abominations, and the Alex Van Helsing series

Sanders The marketing departments for book publishers think they have to categorize books in order for them to sell. They want to reach a targeted market, so they pigeon-hole works into categories like middle grade novels, young adult novels, romance novels, mystery novels, and so forth. I hate that, for it limits audiences. Fine writing is fine writing; the human condition is the human condition, no matter what age a character is or in what situation we find him or her. Millions of readers of the Harry Potter novels proved that; although the books were marketed as children’s books, they appealed to a much wider audience. And that brings me to David Bowles’s The Smoking Mirror: Garza Twins Book One. Bowles is a skillful writer, and his book—although targeted to a middle grade audience—is instructive, witty, and charming. It is the tale of twins Juan Angel Garza and his sister Carolina. They are tasked with saving their mother, who has been taken into the underworld. And what Bowles imparts is the idea that all of us have the power to accomplish extraordinary tasks if we have the motivation. And love for their mother is certainly a powerful force. I’m not discounting the fact that this is a book that children will love and learn from. But I am saying that anyone, no matter what age, will identify with these kids and will enjoy Bowles’s well-crafted, exciting adventure. He takes us into the underworld of Aztec and Mayan mythology. His gods, goddesses, and creatures come from tales told to him as a child, and they are directly from the Aztec/Mayan myths. In his acknowledgments, Bowles admits that he stayed true to what he’d read about the underworld in those myths, but he also embellished a bit. Any child of American Hispanic origin will relish this tale simply because it explores the roots of their culture. The book is peppered with Spanish, but Bowles is so skillful a writer that not knowing Spanish is not a hindrance (and he helpfully provides a glossary at the conclusion.) Thus any child not of Hispanic roots will take the wild ride and be dazzled by its fire-breathing villains, its zombie-like creatures, and its shapeshifting heroes. This is Fun—and that capital “F” is not a typo, for this, as they say, is fun with a capital “F.” I’ll end with my best imitation of a carnival barker: “That’s not all, folks. Tell you what I’m gonna do: if you like The Smoking Mirror, we’re gonna throw in (in 2016) a second Garza twins story.” So the saga of the shapeshifting twins will continue. Children and children at heart will be able to enjoy the Garza twins long after they finish The Smoking Mirror. Que bueno!

Underworld adventure By Lee Murray David Bowles’ The Smoking Mirror, is the story of the Garza twins—smart-ass Johnny and his sister Carol—whose family is torn apart when their mother goes missing. Neglected by their father, and increasingly estranged from one another, the children are shunted off to relatives in Mexico, where they learn of their shapeshifting abilities, and of the startling and dangerous quest that only they can make. They must venture into the Underworld, and pass through its realms, in order to rescue their mother. As with all stories that pit good against evil, The Smoking Mirror is populated with sidekicks, unexpected helpers, monsters and the monstrous. Crammed with information about Mexican folklore and mythology, and spattered with Spanish terms for authenticity, this is a YA paranormal adventure with a twist. Although the book’s protagonists are 12 years old, which would ordinarily make it suitable for middle grade readers, in my view the vocabulary in this book lends it to older readers, from around age 14 onwards.(I received a review copy of The Smoking Mirror from the book’s publisher).

By joseph e. casanova I was very fortunate to receive an advanced copy of The Smoking Mirror last week from my friend David Bowles, and the best way to describe the book as “The Wonder Twins meets Percy Jackson with a lot of Mexican sabor”.The Smoking Mirror chronicles the adventures of Nagual shapeshifting twins Johnny and Carol Garza who travel to the Aztec underworld to rescue their mother Veronica after she disappears leaving the family in turmoil. Their mother and grandmother are also shapeshifting Naguales. The twins endure typical pre-teen struggles while finally coming to terms with their new-found abilities. Johnny morphs into a jaguar while Carol changes into a Mexico red wolf. David does a great job in capturing how the twins learn to hunt and track in their respective animal forms. He paints an awesome picture of the Aztec underworld with its unique characters, numerous monsters and dangerous settings. The story has lots of action and the plot moves along quite well.I can’t wait for the sequel and it’s nice to finally see a new generation of Latino fantasy heroes with more coming on the horizon.

I was disappointed because I thought it was going to be my son's first "real" comic book, but it was laid out like a regular book.

"We want kids to feel about math the way they feel about dessert after dinner." ―Laura Overdeck, Time magazine

Our mission: to make math a fun part of kids' everyday lives. When is the last time you gave your child a math problem just for fun? Yesterday? Last year? Maybe never? We all know it's wonderful to read bedtime stories to kids, but the question remains―what about doing math? Math has a negative association in our culture and many Americans are uncomfortable and even fearful of math and numbers. But Bedtime Math is here to change all that.

In Bedtime Math 3, math and fun facts combine for one wacky and wild adventure! Now kids can discover the truth behind all their favorite things: marshmallows, Coca-Cola, astronaut ice cream, and more! These fun, mischief-making math problems aren't just kid-friendly, but actually, kid-appealing. With over 100 math problems on a variety of topics, kids will find math isn't just fun―it can be found everywhere! And with three different levels of challenge (Wee ones, Little kids, and Big kids), plus a Bonus question, there's something for everyone. We can make numbers fun―and change the world―one Bedtime Math problem at a time.

I find this one by far the most fun to read since each spread actually has interesting information that answers a question or debunks a myth. The nonfiction mini-essays are informative and entertaining. My main complaint with the first two books was the little essays really said nothing (like two paragraphs about how ketchup is red and would make a mess if you squirted it on someone or whatever). Much improvement on that front! My only criticism of this book is that there seems to be too great a spread between the first two levels of math problems and the second two. I have a four-year-old and a 7-year-old second grader, and my four-year-old can answer the "wee ones" and "little kids" questions, which are too easy for my second grader, but the "big kids" questions seem to be at an upper elementary level (3rd-5th grade maybe) and often involve multiplication, division, or other skills my 2nd grader hasn't learned yet, so there seems to be a 1st-2nd grade gap in the math problems.

We have been looking forward to the release of this book and have not been disappointed! It has been laughed over, fought over and thoroughly enjoyed by our whole family! Who knew math could be so much fun!
