3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. It Turns Out the Kingdom Keepers Aren’t Ready for Their Happily Ever After By Mark Baker - Carstairs Considers While I have complained about a couple of books in the series, I really did enjoy the Kingdom Keepers books. Hey, I am a DisNerd after all. So when Ridley Pearson announced that he was working on a sequel series, I knew I’d have to read it. The Syndrome is actually a transition book designed to bridge the gap to the new series. I just read it, and I’m definitely hooked on this next chapter. Not familiar with the franchise? The Kingdom Keepers are a group of kids who work to protect the Disney Kingdom from the Overtakers, a group of Disney villains out to destroy the magic. They do this by crossing over to the parks as holograms while they sleep. Joining the main core of five ordinary kids are Amanda and Jess, two “Fairlies” who have special powers. Confused by all this? It does make sense if you go back and read the earlier books, although the bare essentials are explained here. There are some spoilers for earlier books, however, so jump in here with caution. As this book opens, Amanda and Jess are settling into their new lives in California. They are both in Disney’s school for future Imaginers and really enjoying their new lives. However, it’s been a few days since Amanda has heard from Finn or any of the other Kingdom Keepers. Naturally, this worries her so she takes all their combined savings to fly back to Orlando. When she tries to reconnect with her friends, she is stonewalled by their parents who are clearly hiding something.Meanwhile, Jess has had one of her visions. Along with some images from Disneyland, she also sees men capturing a young woman, someone who looks a lot like Amanda. What do those images mean? Can Jess find a way to protect Amanda? What is going on with the Kingdom Keepers?Anyone familiar with the franchise can easily guess the answer to that last question based on the title, but it isn’t too far into the book before we get that confirmed. The whys take up much of the rest of the story and provide another great story. There are some wonderful complications along the way to the climax which has some nice twists to it but definitely leaves us with plenty of question to launch into the new series. In the past, I’ve complained about the character development or lack of it. That actually wasn’t the case here. With a smaller cast of characters, we got to know them better than in previous books. I loved seeing how Amanda and Jess have grown and continue to grow in this adventure.Of course, it helps that we get the story from their first person points of view. In fact, there are four characters who share first person narrating duties. It’s not something done too regularly, but with the headings when the point of view changed, I found it easy enough to follow.Unfortunately, there are times we get scenes from other character's point of view without anything new added, and the cuts between characters seem a little out of sequence at times. The other flaw with the book is some very poor editing through the entire thing. On the other hand, the scenes in the parks are top notch as always. This has consistently been my favorite part of the franchise, and this book didn’t disappoint in the slightest. So Kingdom Keeper fans will be pleased with The Syndrome. It will leave them wanting to read more. In fact, I’m going to have to make time for the first book in this new series (which is already out) soon so I can figure out just exactly what is happening now.

BUT I WILL STILL BUY THE NEXT ONE By Robert Thomas At some parts this book really becomes hard to follow or understand where it has jumped to. Readers suggestions being included distract from the plot and progress in current Pearson books. If he has run out of far fetched ideas Mr. Pearson needs to move on to other projects.. It seems this started (although the entire idea of DHI's is far fetched as also is the over takers, but kind of fun) with the dolphins saving the Kingdom Keepers as they jumped off the cruise Ship. Book is kind of a waste of time even for Disney Philes! BUT I WILL STILL BUY THE NEXT ONE

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great book! I loved the mystery of it all ... By Jeff Rackham Great book! I loved the mystery of it all (I read it before The Return) and the fact that it not only focused on our favorite Fairlies, but also on Greg Luowski and the two opposing forces in regards to the Keepers. - I do have to say that there is a slight disconnect between this book and The Return but it doesn't diminish from the exciting story that unfolds. - Overall, great book! Disney has just made the Kingdom Keepers series even better than before!

A tractor is more than a piece of farm machinery. It’s farmer’s partner that helps him get the hard work done. This dynamic picture book shows a big tractor from spring to harvest—planting, cultivating, harvesting, and doing otherimportant tasks on a busy farm. Bold illustrations, coupled with a simple and lyrical text, show a tractor at work throughout the seasons.

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—Clement is a deity of vehicular lit. When kids enter the moving machinery phase of childhood, they revel in his Drive (2008), Job Site (2011), and Speed (2013, all Boyds Mills). Big Tractor is another wonderland of superlative illustrations that convey interesting information with the help of minimal text. The main characters here are a farmer in a checkered shirt and green-and-white cap, and a large green tractor. On the first page, the farmer opens a huge door and says, "Wake up, Ol' Partner. It's springtime!" He talks to the vehicle about the jobs they are tackling as they proceed through the growing season: "Hurry up! Time to tow the planter. Time to seed the rows." "Take a break, Ol' Partner. Time to start up the combine. Time to cut down the wheat." Each spread is a lesson in agriculture, demonstrating the many phases of activity and the attachments a tractor pulls in order to get the work done. The computer-rendered images are dramatic and beautiful, treating readers to a wide variety of colors and perspectives. VERDICT Pair this title with Michael Garland's Grandpa's Tractor (2011) and Joy Cowley's The Rusty, Trusty Tractor (1999, both Boyds Mills) for a farm machinery storytime that's downright heartwarming.—Susan Weitz, formerly at Spencer-Van Etten School District, Spencer, NY

Review “Clement is a deity of vehicular lit… The computer-rendered images are dramatic and beautiful, treating readers to a wide variety of colors and perspectives.” – School Library Journal“A burly man in a plaid shirt and baseball cap addresses his tractor as "Ol' Partner," reminding his green-painted friend of all the jobs they do together over the course of one agricultural year, from spring to winter… Impressive graphics on a series of spreads show different tools hooked up to the tractor as it assists with tasks throughout the seasons, ending with a lovely post-harvest activity.” – Kirkus Reviews

About the Author Nathan Clement is the author and illustrator of Drive, Job Site, and Speed. A graphic artist by profession, he currently works at illustrating and writing. Clement earned his BFA in art and writing from Indiana Wesleyan University in 1989. He lives in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Big Tractor pairs Clement's trademark digital illustrations with a spare text filled with warmth and appreciation for tractors and farmers. The story follows a farmer and his tractor (who he fondly calls "Ol' Partner") through a full year of duties. We get to see the farmer and his tractor turn the soil, seed the rows, harvest, cultivate, combine, and haul. We even get to see Tractor take part in a hayride before taking a wintertime rest. It's a story filled with information about the entire agricultural process with no more than a sentence or two per two page spread. The text is tailored to toddlers and young preschoolers and serves as a wonderful introduction to the farming process.Clement's illustrations work wonders with color and perspective and provide young readers with that unique sense of being right there as the tractor rolls out of the barn, or travels along mowing in the field. Big Tractor is a must have for any story time, or classroom collection and an enthusiastic recommend for any young tractor lover.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This book is wonderful on many levels. By Ma. Antonia Amorsolo This book provided a needed alternative. It's filled with great generative poetry writing exercises, each accompanied by a short discussion written by the poet who contributed the piece. These introductions are at least as valuable as the assignments themselves: reading them, one sees a poet's mind in action, something very hard to describe or capture. This book is a must-read for any poet, regardless of skill. It has exercises ranging from terribly technical to wildly free formed. They are fun, sometimes even silly, and lead the reader into mental places they might never have thought to go. The results of the exercises always surprise the reader, and I would say that if a poem doesn't surprise it's writer, nothing has been learned.

By Rob Natiuk The writer speaks of having a long history of writing poetry, from her grade school days to the present. I so much wished that she/he would've shared some of those poems with us, perhaps using them as examples to encourage young people and children. Rather, this book is more of a teaching book, very procedural rather than sharing. For children to grasp the lessons she/speaks about, they need to SEE and be involved.First, the author briefly covers "The Fundamentals of Basic Poetry." Later, the author will tell us to avoid cliches, to think in new ways. So here she/he says, "Remember if it quacks like a duck, it most likely is a duck." She/he also assumes that just because some lines are broken into short lines, it can pass for poetry. No, there is much more. Then, "Physical Aspects of the Language." The author doesn't use the kind of language that kids speak. It's professorial and not in a child's vernacular. SHOW, DON'T TELL! Poetry is SHARING YOURSELF. The best way for children to learn poetry is from reading poems and then briefly analyzing them to see what makes them musical. And then freely writing poems. It is not through the didactic way this book does. This book is designed more for the higher grades, perhaps seventh through twelve. If that's what you want, it will serve well. I even appreciated the review of the different kinds of feet and rhymes in poetry. Please allow me to sum up with an off-the-cuff rhyme: If you are feeling life to the full See its flow, flow with your seeing No book need teach you how to share The poetry bubbling deep in your being.

The definitions are elementary at best, and the examples chosen are weak in illustrating the point. I feel I could have learned as much, if not more, from a quick Google search on poetry writing. Also, there are no exercises in this edition, unless you count the list of ten subjects that you might want to base a poem around (a tree, a restaurant, a man, etc). Look up the definitions of structure, line, meter, and rhythm, and then recall the obvious such as avoiding cliches and outdated language and you will have accomplished just as much as reading this book.

Harry can hide in the corn field, up in an apple tree or even behind a cow. Now can you find the silly hippo? Of course you can...and then you can start the game all over again. These Harry the Hippo books are very simple but that's perhaps why preschoolers love them. Don't question it...just enjoy the fact your child loves paging through this board book. So, let's go find where Harry is hiding!

By NYCityMom So far we have 4 of the Hide and Seek Harry books and my 17 months old daughter loves them so much.Besides Harry she also likes to point out the sidekicks (each book has another little character) and we enjoy finding cute details. The drawings/illustration are great and the characters are adorable.Looking forward to new Harry books!

Rhymes are kind of random or nonexistent and the flow while reading is not as nice as in the previous book. I would recommend "on the beach" book but not this one.

A veritable Dream Team of civil litigators collaborated on Mastering the Mechanics of Civil Jury Trials: A Strategic Guide Outlining the Anatomy of a Trial, a must-have reference for both aspiring and veteran lawyers interested in honing the craft of civil jury trial strategy and procedure. Tyler Draa, partner at Silicon Valley litigation firm Greenfield Draa & Harrington LLP, is a frontman of sorts for the dynamic team whose experience sets forth the anatomy of a trial, with judicial comments from the Honorable Franklin E. Bondonno, of the Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara. Co-authors Maureen Harrington (also a partner at Greenfield Draa & Harrington) and Doris Cheng (Walkup Melodia, Kelly & Schoenberger in San Francisco), are among the highest ranked women lawyers in California. "This manual presumes you have completed the pre-trial discovery process. The parties have exhausted settlement discussions. Your case is proceeding to trial. You have been assigned to a trial department. The collective tasks you must complete are, at first blush, daunting. This manual describes each of the tasks separately and sequentially. By focusing your attention on the next task to be accomplished, not the entirety of challenges ahead, you can weather the process of trying a case to verdict." Throughout the manual, the authors delve into the strategies that could make or break a case, depending on the experience of the lawyer or the lack thereof. Thinking on your feet and being prepared for all possible outcomes and surprises is emphasized throughout. Pivotal moments include jury selection (voir dire), as well as direct and cross examination, to name a few. The inclusion of judicial commentary on such aspects, where relevant, offers sage perspective from the bench itself. All stages of procedure and strategy are discussed, for both plaintiff and defendant representation. This is also a fascinating peek inside the mechanics of courtroom procedure for anyone interested in understanding the nuances and strategies of the civil justice system. The wisdom gleaned from real practice, as presented in this book, makes Mastering the Mechanics of Civil Jury Trials both a primer for the layperson or law student, and a legacy of experience for all practicing lawyers, one that bridges the mentor gap. Includes an extensive Appendix citing state-by-state rules and codes for various aspects of trial procedure. A fascinating peek inside the courtroom.

Mastering The Mechanics Of Civil Jury Trials: A Strategic Guide Outlining The Anatomy Of A Trial, by Tyler G. Draa, Doris Cheng, Maureen Harrington, Franklin E. Bondonno

Review ”One of the first things learned in law school is that over the past several decades, the number of civil cases going to jury trials have sharply decreased. A natural result of the decline in cases going to jury trials are less attorneys experienced in jury practice and even less experienced attorneys willing and able to mentor inexperienced attorneys in jury practice. Enter, Tyler G. Draa [et al]. Their manual provides a succinct, easy-to-navigate guide…begins with basic tenets…and ends with insights into post-verdict etiquette…all the pieces of a complete jury trial… “The book is easy to understand and…does not contain the draconian language or feel of a traditional hornbook…includes case studies and real-life illustrations of the recommended techniques in action. Another unique highlight…is the practical considerations and guidance from both the plaintiff and defense attorney perspective. It also contains unique insight and advice from the bench―the do’s and don’ts of a civil jury trial lawyer. Very beneficial, as many lawyers never get feedback from the judges whom they practice before. “Whether you are a new attorney just entering jury trial practice, an experienced jury trial attorney, or in between, Mastering the Mechanics is an essential read that will either get you started on your way to jury trial practice or provide a much needed refresher and new outlook on jury trial practice.” Barbara Ballard Woodcock, Marco Island, Florida Bar Member The Florida Bar Journal “The Santa Clara County Bar Association had been trying for over two decades to find the right materials for presenting a seminar on preparing for and conducting a civil jury trial. Tyler Draa's manual has been the best we have ever found to teach lawyers of all experience levels how to be an excellent litigator. To have a manual that covers the nuts and bolts of a civil jury trial from A to Z is an invaluable resource for every litigator. We are looking forward to Tyler using his book to present another compelling legal education seminar again.” Christine Burdick, Director, Chief Executive Officer & General Counsel Santa Clara County Bar Association, California ”’Mastering the Mechanics’ breaks the complexity of the jury trial into basic components. In plain English, with understandable summaries, straightforward instructions, occasional numbered step-by-step directions and real-life examples, the authors describe “how-to” and “what-to-do” from pre-trial, through every step of trial, and post-trial motions and appeals…filled with practical tips that have value to new trial lawyers and are good reminders to the experienced professional…There are fundamental tips for presenting evidence, and even style before the jury…Many chapters include a’ Judicial Comment’ providing the judge’s perspective on the subject…’Mastering the Mechanics’ will help any lawyer make the trial engine zoom, to our clients’ advantage.” David Gurnick, Lewitt Hackman, Encino, CA, Book Review in San Fernando Valley Bar Association’s Valley Lawyer, June 2015 “'Mastering the Mechanics of Civil Jury Trials' is not only is a how-to, but a how-why resource book for the trial lawyer and law students. It is an essential guide for the novice lawyer who has to learn the why and how of civil trial practice and also for the more experienced lawyer who should always have a checklist of crucial trial practice information. It should be part of every civil trial lawyer’s trial notebook.” Professor Barbara Barron, Co-director of Hofstra’s Trial Techniques Program, Co-director of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy’s (NITA) "'Mastering the Mechanics of Civil Jury Trials' is an invaluable aid for those attorneys who desire to become trial lawyers. It is a practical, well-written guide that is itself a road map for trying a case. Reading and keeping this book as a constant companion will well serve the aspiring trial lawyer. It is both a knowledgable resource and a source of confidence." John Ottobani, Esq., General Counsel, Office of the General Counsel, Santa Clara University "Every young lawyer should carry this practice manual in his or her briefcase as it is a step-by-step guide on how to try a case―from pre-trial briefs, to the use of challenges, to the opening statement and development of a theme. The manual includes everything from a guide to introducing evidence to closing argument. This book should be a Bible for every trial lawyer-to-be. Most importantly, it is a common-sense guide on what to do and when. It is the food you eat to undertake the trial journey. Unfortunately, we are not teaching these lessons in law school today." Joseph W. Cotchett, Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy, San Francisco, CA “Tyler Draa and his co-authors have created a book that should be required reading for both budding and experienced trial lawyers alike. I would keep it on counsel table at trial, as unconventional as my approach at trial may be. The nuts and bolts are all there, as are tips for the more weathered, battle-hardened practitioner. I would recommend this book to any lawyer―even those who only occasionally―try cases before juries.” Jeffrey S. Mitchell, Mitchell Law Group, San Francisco, CA "I have been a trial lawyer for over 30 years. Representing a client in court, in front of a jury, is complex and challenging. Tyler Draa and his compatriots have written a book that is the perfect distillation of the steps, strategies and mind-set needed to try a civil law suit, from the minute you walk into the court room until you thank the jury after finishing your closing argument. Any trial lawyer, whether just beginning a career, or beginning his or her 4th decade in the profession, will benefit greatly from the advice and approach presented in Mr. Draa’s book. I highly recommend it." Tim Hamilton, Walker, Hamilton & Koenig LLP, San Francisco, CA "The authors have distilled many years worth of experiential learning and wisdom into this volume. Here is a way to learn much of the mechanics and customs of trying a case before entering the courthouse. Priceless for a new litigator, and an excellent refresher for anyone whose trial skills have become rusty." Boone Callaway "As an expert I have worked with over 200 attorneys. Mr Draa's approach to witness preparation was the most thorough and comprehensive and enlightening I have yet encountered." Mark M Jacobs, MD "Draa's book is an important manual of basic and practical information about the mechanics of a civil jury trial. Unfortunately with fewer and fewer cases going to trial now this is vitally important to law students and civil attorneys of all level of experience. As an attorney who has tried over 150 civil jury trials, I can highly recommend it." Gary Gwilliam "In September 2014, I attended a CLE trial seminar presented by Tyler G. Draa, Maureen Harrington, Doris Cheng, and the Honorable Socrates Manoukian. The program was a tour-de-force, taking the beginning trial attorney through all aspects of trial preparation and advocacy. In a concise, practical, and informative presentation, Mr. Draa began by training attorneys in the basic skills needed to conduct an effective jury trial. He then transitioned to more advanced techniques, including the selection of a winning case theory, the use of exhibits, the effective examination of witness, and the effective response to evidentiary challenges and tricks. 'Mastering the Mechanics of Civil Jury Trials' continues Mr. Draa’s tradition of providing legal advocates with the critical training and instruction that our law schools so often fail to provide. It should be required reading for all attorneys, young and old." Julian Pardo de Zela, Esq. "I have known and admired Tyler as a trial lawyer for many years...I am glad that he has put encyclopedic knowledge on paper. I am even more glad to see one of the best pieces of advice that he gave to me is repeated in this worthy book--to embrace negative evidence and to view adverse events in trial as 'opportunities.' This book is absolutely terrific. First of all, it is logically and sensibly organized. The table of contents actually helps one find what one is looking for--all too rare in legal texts. Tyler's style comes through clearly; humorous but not jokey, informed, practical and pithy. The overall tone is terrific. This book will be enjoyable (and useful) to anyone who tries cases (or wants to learn how)." Nora Rousso

It is difficult to get trial experience and this book provides the reader with practical advice on how to try a jury case. My 11 year old daughter downloaded it immediately after reading the beginning of The Case of the Claymore Diamond. She identifies with the characters, thinks Felix is hilarious and wants to be Charlotte when she grows up. As in the first book the math in this book gives her a real world perspective on how math is used every day and not just for money. She was completely caught up in the story and read it in two days.Luckily for us it appears there is a third book coming out - she's anxiously awaiting it's release.

Snowfell is a realm that exists within our own, recognized Earth world. It is just hidden very well, though the occupants of Snowfell often blend in and intermingle with the humans of Earth, without being noticed, or the humans being aware. In this particular story, a woman who had been leading a rather boring, contradictory lifestyle, unfortunately has inexorably become locked in mortal combat for the realm to survive, coming up against a close friend, who turns out to actually be her arch-nemesis. The woman struggles to find her place of strength, and understand why it is that she has become stuck in the realm, whilst using skills she had acquired during her life on Earth. Into this awful equation she is also leaned upon to aid those she has come to love from the same realm. During this time she experiences through her adventures and observations, betrayal, survival, a broader spectrum to understanding, love, compassion and abuse with a morbid hatred for her own kind and mortality slowly growing... From battling her own insecurities, to fighting the Emperor of the Taur, Kate Haggis who has by now gained some renown in the world of Snowfell, and is pushed into rescuing the land before the complete destruction of the elven nation. Saving another human woman's life, the bard, as Kate is fondly known, tells the epic tale, along with her cynical, sarcastic inner voice. Into this mix are thrown five companions, Leafeldur DorDinen, a magic user; Moridhe Khelndi, a stalwart happy-go-lucky ranger, and his beloved Joanne Grisley, a human woman from Earth, too; Tagolan Greenleaf, a haughty prince who seems afraid of dirt; and Robert Trellawny, the infamous dark horse and healer of the group. The group band together, to heal the wrongs done and try to restore the balance of the realm once more. To save a world that although not truly hers to be called home, Kate has regardless, come to love and value more than she ever believed could be possible. Burning cities, living trees, strange races and even stranger customs – how long can her sanity last with it all? Wars, magic, dark plots and more!

Review

“The thrilling idea, the book concludes, is that Samso is ‘not very different from where you live.' Your community doesn't need wind; it needs a spark, to get people to think and work together.” ―Los Angeles Times

“Energy Island opens with the power of wind captured by a pinwheel, an illustration that neatly encapsulates this remarkably accessible book about the path to energy independence on the Danish island of Samso.” ―The New York Times Book Review

“In this first title in a planned series of picture books about sustainable energy, Drummond combines winsome, kinetic, ink-and-wash illustrations with a succinct, simply phrased, smoothly flowing narrative that describes how Samsø transformed itself.” ―Starred, Booklist

“The illustrations further personalize the story with energy of their own as they bring Samsø and its residents to life.” ―Starred, School Library Journal

“The message is clear: An initially unconcerned community banded together and took steps that led to their current fame as a model of environmental action; we other residents of the island that is planet Earth can do that, too.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Energy independence may not seem like a gripping topic for a picture book, but Drummond (Tin Lizzie) tells the story of the Danish island of Samsø so engagingly that families may find themselves considering wind turbines for their backyards.” ―Publishers Weekly

About the Author Author/illustrator Allan Drummond studied at the Royal College of Art. His many books include Tin Lizzie, a Green Earth Honor Book. He lives in Savannah, Georgia, where he is Chair of Illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design.

Hughes When the Danish Ministry of Environment chooses Samso, an island in the middle of Denmark, to rely on renewable energy, a teacher named Soren Hermansen takes the lead. The people on the island build a wind turbine, start to use solar panels and biomass, and drive electric cars and bicycles. The island creates new learning center, the Energy Academy, for people of all ages. The center, led by Soren Hermansen, keeps making the most of renewable sources of energy on Samso or Energy Island. This timely picture book about renewable energy will be enjoyed by children ages 5-8.

The people that live there have worked to make the entire island energy independent. It is told in story book form, bringing it down to the level at which kids can understand it. It may inspire children to try and become more energy independent, I know it inspired me! In the side bars there is more detailed information for older kids. This book is perfect for classroom type settings when learning about alternative energy.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great for Students! By D. Demoin This book really catalogs the progression from once energy dependent island to an energy independent island. Great for younger students (4th grade to 6th grade). It has definitions in the margins that really lead to more questions that even your student can investigate further if he/she is interested.
