Friends come in all shapes and sizes…

“Mooey’s the name, and milk is my game!” That’s the first thing Mooey said to my little brother Robbie and I when we met her. Oh yeah, did you know cows can talk? I didn’t! Anyway, Mooey’s so awesome! And super funny! She’s even a good dancer! I’m so happy that Mooey is part of our family now.

No milk? No problem!

Tony and his little brother Robbie love cereal. Cereal with milk, to be exact. When they sit down for breakfast and find out they’re out of milk, Tony has probably the best idea ever in the whole history of everything. Why not get a cow? Then they’d never run out of milk again!

The Year of the Identity Crisis By FredTownWard The heroines of The Year of the Book and The Year of the Baby return in another fun and gently lesson teaching story.Eleven-year-old Anna Wang heads off to the sixth grade and a new school, middle school, without one of her two best friends, Laura, who is now attending a private school. Surrounded by classmates who have their roots all in America, Anna begins to feel out of place. In addition a former teacher and her husband, inspired by the example of the Wangs adopting baby Kaylee from China (detailed in the second book), have decided to adopt a baby of their own, and Anna's Mom has offered to help. However, now that they have finally been approved to adopt, Anna's Mom cannot get time off from work to go with them to China like she wanted to so Anna offers to go with them by herself instead, even though she has never stayed away from home alone before. Since the Sylvester's baby is coming from the same orphanage Kaylee had come from, the Wangs had hoped for the opportunity to visit it and learn a bit more about the younger Kaylee who had been left on the steps of an office building and taken to the orphanage where they called her Bao Bao, but now such investigations will be up to Anna alone. The run up to the trip is filled with making new friends, reuniting with an old friend, holding a fortune cookie bake sale (Yes, everyone including the author points out that fortune cookies are an American invention, but she still includes the recipe and assembly instructions at the end so readers can try it if they want to.) to raise money for the Lucky Family Orphanage, about which almost nothing is known, and a group knitting activity to provide knit caps for the other babies at the orphanage, if she is allowed to visit. In China Anna struggles with homesickness, makes a new friend, and experiences the odd feeling of NOT standing out from the crowd, of looking like everybody else. (Most everyone just assumes she's a local unless she tells them different.)If the stakes are not quite as high as in the preceding volume, the feelings are every bit as strong. What does it mean to be both Chinese and American? By the end of this book Anna Wang has figured it out to her (and likely the readers') satisfaction. In addition methinks the author has set up a future sequel when Anna and her whole family will visit China and the rest of her family she barely knows.Note: The series continues with The Year of the Three Sisters.

I like that it was different than other kids' books, with the multicultural aspect. I like that it taught my daughter about another culture. I think it would be especially great for Chinese children to have the main character in the story also be Chinese. It is educational but interesting. It is also good for any child who is different, and since many children children struggle with being different it can help them feel better about that. It is well written. I would recommend it.

They are short and sweet, but have positive messages that younger girls will appreciate. The fact that they also help teach some Chinese isn't bad either! The third installment finds Anna in her first year of middle school, a little overwhelmed by all of the activities and homework, plus the prospect of making new friends. Anna is also due to travel with the Sylvesters (one of Anna's former teachers) to China as they adopt a baby girl. Anna is excited to see the country that makes up her heritage but struggles with knowing how to identify herself - is she American? Is she Chinese? Both? It is a difficult time for Anna as she is maturing and coming to terms with who she is, but the trip to China teaches her many things firsthand that she couldn't have learned any other way."The Year of the Fortune Cookie" is a fitting continuation of Cheng's series. Readers will enjoy seeing Anna's development and her impending maturation. I also really appreciated the incorporation of George Ella Lyon's poem "Where I'm From" and Anna's variation of it - very fitting and inspirational.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. review of water skippers By Roslynn This might be the first book by Ms. Jennifer Julie Miller but it had such sweetness and an air of innocence to it that even though there was some heavy things discussed spousal abuse or otherwise, murder, horrible familial secrets there was also hope, faith, love and magic. Maybe it had to do with the way Ms. Miller portrayed the male and female protagonists even though the male protagonist at times seemed a little bit unbelievable or perhaps it was the time period the book was writing in. I figured the first part was early 19th century while the second half was more modern 21st century I wasn’t really sure but I still enjoyed it.Eden a beautiful eighteen year old girl loved her family and found happiness in her day to day life especially since Eden deals with horrible people especially Walter. Eden deals with Walter by a beautiful place a lake with some magical water skippers or water striders. Walter is a horrible cruel man who owns most of the town including the mines which Eden’s father works at and pays for Eden’s family to live in the cabin on his property. Walter wants Eden for his wife and offers her father for her hand in marriage. Eden’s father refuses attempting to keep Eden safe until one day he dies in the mines. Eden attempts to keep her mother happy but Walter is unrelenting in his suit and Eden loses her mother too. Eden runs to her place of happiness which turns to horror. Kyle years later comes to the property to take ownership and discovers the lake, the water skippers and Eden. The more Kyle spends with Eden he can’t help the attraction he has for her and she for him but there is also a horrible secret that could destroy their love for each other.I loved Eden’s naïve, sweet, innocent wholesome nature for some reason she just seemed totally believable to me. Eden wasn’t a totally complicated character and seemed like she wouldn’t fight against the injustice or wickedness that she sees from people and the world which most of the times this annoys me because I want a strong independent heroine. I just didn’t want Eden like this and couldn’t imagine this of her. Yes she has fight and she is strong just in a different way. On the hand Kyle didn’t seem very believable for me. He seemed to be the nicest most gentlemanly twenty eight year old I have ever read about. It’s not that I didn’t like him I did I liked his way he treated people especially Nora and Ricky I loved his relationship with them both. I do hope Ms. Miller decides to write about Nora, Roman, Ricky and Ginger because I really liked them. That’s why I rated the book four stars, can recommend it and will get more books from Ms. Miller!

Jennifer Julie Miller is an amazing author with a mind full of magic and I see a phenomenal future in her calling to write By Patricia, Room With Books Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of Water Skippers by Jennifer Julie Miller in exchange for an honest review. It was my pleasure to read Water Skippers. Reading a book written in oral form was a new experience and I had to stop and remember this when I wanted to get fussy about grammatical issues. This is the way the book is supposed to be and I couldn’t take issue with it.Water Skippers by Jennifer Julie Miller is a delightful story that contains enchanting little water bugs filled with magical powers. This story is so hard to read in the beginning but also filled with wonderful moments. It is easy to read and easy to follow and if you don’t fall in love with Eden and Kyle, I don’t know what I will do with you! I highly recommend you read Water Skippers.Jennifer Julie Miller is an amazing author with a mind full of magic and I see a phenomenal future in her calling to write beautiful stories.I give Water Skippers by Jennifer Julie Miller five steaming hot cups of Room With Books coffee.©January 8, 2016Patricia, Room With Books

He decides that if he can’t have Eden, nobody can. After her dad dies, he tries to take advantage of her. Her mother is very ill, and then she also passes, leaving Eden alone. But the water skippers are there to take care of Eden! One day, Kyle brings his horse Trig to the lake, so they meet. Then there’s a journey where Kyle has to figure out who Eden is or was. There's a happy ending for Kyle and Eden, and I'd recommend this story if you want something different from the average book.

This book is not a board book but he loved the story. Most of the Gossie and Gertie series are board books so if you have a little one that loves to rip books pick a different book in the series. We have almost all of the series and they are nice short, silly stories for toddlers. A word of caution, you may have to read this book over and over to the delight of your child! I highly recommend this story.

From the first entry, When I Saw You First, to the last, Interupted Melody, every one is a gem. I have favorites like White Lace, Truth Is A Blur, I See, If, and Turbulence, but that will probably change as I go back and revisit them. The only regret I have in reading this is that I didn't write it.

Pipsie, Nature Detective: The Disappearing Caterpillar, by Rick DeDonato

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—Pipsie is a nature-loving girl, who, accompanied by her sidekick Alfred Z. Turtle, befriends a baby caterpillar named Frannie. When Frannie mysteriously disappears, Pipsie zealously relies on her keen detective skills to find her. From a chewed-up milkweed leaf to dangly chrysalis to monarch butterfly, Pipsie and Alfred eventually reunite with their friend, who is now blessed with newfound wings. Due to a job well done, mystery successfully becomes history. While some readers may already know what happens to the missing caterpillar before the story even begins, there's solid information about metamorphosis to be gleaned from the fictional narrative. Additional fun facts are presented at the end of the book. Bishop's bright, cheerful illustrations capture Pipsie's earnest joy in her scientific quest. This is further enhanced by her silly sidekick, Alfred Turtle, who is more interested in gulping down clues for lunch than getting the job done. DeDonato has Pipsie follow some essential steps for scientific inquiry: firsthand inspection for clues followed by consultation with an expert in the field (the zoo man with the badge). The ideal follow-up lesson would be a similar hunt for caterpillars and/or other natural wonders. VERDICT A cute, acceptable choice to pair with nonfiction books on the life cycle of a butterfly.—Etta Anton, Yeshiva of Central Queens, NY

These were the kind of books I chose for our children when they were younger and the ones I go back to when giving gifts.Pipsie is a sweet girl who, along with her pet turtle, Alfred, share lessons about nature. Pipsie and her turtle meet a new friend, Frannie the caterpillar, who suddenly disappears. They are determined to find out the mystery of what happened to Frannie. As Frannie and Alfred explore nature looking for clues about Frannie, children will learn about the wonders of nature. Children will be excited to turn the pages and find out the mystery to Frannie's disappearance. The illustrations fill the pages and are brightly colored. Pipsie, Alfred, and Frannie's personalities show not only in their conversations, but in the delightful creations on each page.I have no doubt children will love following along with Pipsie and her detective excursions. This would be perfect for preschool-elementary aged children. I could also see teachers using this book in the classroom for a unit on insects. I certainly hope that Pipsie continues to explore nature and share her stories with us.

Francisconi Pipsie is the pint-sized protagonist of this children's science-based 'detective novel' and she's inspiring. Pipsie is an intelligent, energetic girl who, with her helpful sidekick, Alfred Z. Turtle, is determined to "make this mystery history".The fun begins when Pipsie and Alfred notice their new-found caterpillar friend has disappeared. Following their first clue, Pipsie and Alfred Z. Turtle begin their exciting outdoor adventure. Like any good detective, Pipsie researches the clues, consults with experts on the subject, and builds on both to come to scientific conclusions.Pipsie, Nature Detective: The Disappearing Caterpillar is educational in a fun, engaging way. It teaches children that nature science is interesting, gathering facts to come to conclusions is exciting, and learning new things is rewarding. This is a children's book that encourages intelligence, tenacity, and the importance of friendship and teamwork.

That is the mystery that Pipsie, nature detective and her friend Alfred the turtle set out to solve. After searching all around the yard and house they find a clue: a chewed up leaf. This leaf leads them to a bug expert at the local zoo who tells them what to look for in order to find Frannie. This book makes a nice companion to a nonfiction book on monarch butterflies since it blends fact and fiction. The illustrations are adorable and make the book bright and appealing.
