1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good, clean, gothic read for kids By Anne When I requested SoSS from Netgalley (in exchange for my honest review) I had no idea what to expect. Judging from the cover it could have been a children's book or an adult book with a quirky cover. I also didn't realize it was the 2nd book in a series. Technically, I guess this is geared towards middle school kids, but is fine for ages 8 and up looking for a clean read and stands alone well despite my having some initial questions about the set up.Edge did a good job of setting time and place and the plot is interesting and inventive. I found it a touch slow in places and it had no humor which could have helped. I think the author wanted it to be a straight, serious, gothic horror read and didn't want humor to lessen the effect.I liked SoSS and if I knew someone into this type of genre, I would recommend it. The characters and action didn't appeal to me enough to want to read more of the series for myself though.

Lytle Penelope Tredwell is an heiress in London and author of the Penny Dreadful stories, but she can’t publish them under her own name so she uses the name Montgomery Flinch. He is impersonated by actor Monty Maples. After going to a fair with her friend and employee, Alfie, they experience a viewing of the brand new technology of moving pictures. There are approached to assist in the production of a film of one of the Penny Dreadful movies in Northern England near a quarry. After problems on the set, Penny is talked into portraying the heroine of the tale, but strange occurrences continue to happen, almost like the movie is haunted. When she meets the son of the original inventor of the technology she finds out the camera has powers to commit evil. In a showing of the film in London with hundreds of viewers, including the Crown Prince, they must act fast to avoid unleashing the evil. Interesting introduction to the series.

By Dad of Divas I had read one of the other books from the serious and past and truly enjoyed it. The author did a great job at setting the tone of the story and creating characters that were memorable. The story Itself was well-written though there were parts that I found to be a bit slow for my taste. The story did pick up though and the author leaves us is in a good place, however, he still leaves us, and at least me, with questions that I still want answered. All of this being said, it is a good book, and definitely one that I will recommend for my daughter to read!
