Izzy, entering her senior year at a private school in Virginia, had always done everything right. She excelled in sports, academics, friendships, and she even managed to resist the multiple opportunities to give in to peer pressure. So when she met a new student, Luke, quickly known for his apathy and lack of energy, poor academics, and poor choices on the weekends, she decided to look past appearances and step in and tutor him rather than join in on the judgment along with her classmates. Meanwhile, as her senior year progressed, she became more and more aware of the one thing she had not managed to accomplish in high school: having a romantic relationship, and it didn’t seem that her crush, Greg, had any idea that she existed. So she decided that she was going to have to make a few changes in order to be noticed. Just as she had worked so hard to get Luke to end the “too cool for school” façade and make the most of his many talents, she started to sabotage her own academic success in order to play the “pretty girl” role that she thought would finally win Greg’s attention. Little did she know that the student she set out to convince to ignore labels and just be himself would be the one to teach her about being herself, and would even save her life when his was the one that so desperately needed saving.

15 Things Not to Do with a Baby, by Margaret McAllister

From School Library Journal Toddler-PreS—There are many things not to do with a new baby, and McAllister blends the nonsensical with the everyday to create a gem for new older siblings. Perhaps cuddling with an octopus might not be the best idea or losing the baby in the garden. But readers also learn about some of the wonderful things they can do—kiss, love, and hug, just to name a few. Charming illustrations illuminate the text and create an adorable sense of kinship between the siblings from the get-go. Overall, a fun and cheerful story about new milestones in life that young readers will relate to and enjoy. VERDICT A wonderful selection for parenting collections or collections lacking in positive sibling stories.—Ashley Prior, Lincoln Public Library, RI

Review Selected as one of the 12 best Children's books of 2015 "A humorous take on the conflicting emotions that younger siblings can inspire." Independent on Sunday Book Of The Week "Here is an artist who, like Sarah Garland, is portraying a recognisable family with a freshness that is immediately attractive. The topic may not be new but the presentation is lively and engaging and establishes Sterling as an illustrator to watch." Books for Keeps "A perfect gift for an older sibling with a new baby in the family." Parents in Touch "This is not only perfect for new parents or those children new to being a sibling, it is also a fun, funny picture book that everyone will love for its great pictures and warm text." Armadillo Books We Like "Frances Lincoln ensure cultural diversity is represented so these illustrations present a mixed race family. The style is fresh and young with beautiful colours and some lovely silly scenes" Booktrust "With vibrant child-friendly illustrations and a laugh-aloud story, this clever book is just the book to share with age three and upwards." Irish Examiner

This sweet contemporary story about poetry, family, and determining your own destiny is perfect for fans of books by Wendy Mass, Joan Bauer, Sharon Creech, and Rebecca Stead.

Eleven-year-old Emily Elizabeth Davis has never met her father, so when a book of poetry with his name in it goes missing, Emily and her friends search all over their hometown of Berkeley, California, hoping to track it down. Meanwhile, even though her English-professor mother insists that Emily is destined to become a poet (she named her after Emily Dickinson!), Emily secretly corresponds with her idol, romance writer Danielle Steel.

As Publishers Weekly says, "Fitzmaurice's story deftly mingles Dickinson, Danielle Steel, a budding crush, and protesting tree sitters while maintaining suspense that leads to a satisfying ending."

Destiny, Rewritten, by Kathryn Fitzmaurice

From Booklist Emily’s father, whose identity is a mystery, has always been missing from her life, but this story revolves around another mystery: it’s a missing copy of The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson, the book that Emily’s mother chose for her daughter before she was born, along with her name and destiny. Despite her mother’s wish that she be a poet, the sixth-grader clearly prefers writing romance stories, complete with happy endings. Still, at home, at school, and on the hunt for the treasured book, poetry is often a topic of conversation or reflection. Fate and chance have a role in Emily’s story, but she increasingly takes the lead and actively shapes her future. Emily’s engaging first-person narrative chronicles her daily life, her wonderfully quirky family, her musings on fate, her growing sense of self, and her one-way correspondence with her favorite writer, Danielle Steel. The book’s idyllically happy ending may have its critics, but most young readers will find it entirely satisfying. Grades 4-6, --Carolyn Phelan

Review “Aptly set amid the hippie ambiance of Berkeley, Calif., and peopled by offbeat, but believable characters, Fitzmaurice’s story deftly mingles Dickinson, Danielle Steel, a budding crush, and protesting tree sitters while maintaining suspense that leads to a satisfying ending.” (Publishers Weekly)“A sweet book that should appeal to fans of Wendy Mass, Joan Bauer, Sharon Creech, and the like.” (School Library Journal)“There’s a proto-romance with classmate Connor Kelly, attention paid to environmental issues and some interesting poetry, but the focus is squarely on Emily’s growing self-determination. Emotionally, her story rings true. Readers will applaud Emily’s newfound understanding of the workings of destiny and might even follow her lead.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Emily’s exploration of fate is intriguingly presented, and a happy ending comes about through both Emily’s choices and pure luck, leaving readers with the pleasantly paradoxical idea that fate is both beyond and within one’s control...Emily is a strong and likable heroine.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)

From the Back Cover

Emily Elizabeth Davis has been told for her entire life that her destiny is to become a poet, just like her famous namesake, Emily Dickinson. But shortly after discovering that it contains an important family secret, she loses the special volume of Emily Dickinson's poetry that was given to her at birth. As Emily and her friends search for the lost book in used bookstores all across town, Emily's understanding of destiny begins to unravel and then rewrite itself in a marvelous new way.

In her third novel, Kathryn Fitzmaurice again weaves a richly textured story about unexpected connections, about the stories that shape our lives, and about the most perfect kinds of happy endings: those that happen just on time.

Destiny, Rewritten By Nicole Levesque Katherine Tegen Books, 2013Realistic Fiction352 pagesRecommended for grades 4-6Emily Elizabeth Davis is named after poet great Emily Dickinson. This story opens in a used bookstore the day before Emily is born. Her mother, Isabella, is inspired by a first edition of The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson, Isabella decides to name her daughter Emily. She then pens an inscription to her unborn daughter in the front of the book. I know, gasp! In the front of a first edition Emily Dickinson!Isabella is a big believer in a person's destiny being something that we don't trifle with, it just happens to us. But Emily isn't so sure. Emily has always wondered who and where her father is, but her mother won't tell her. Isabella claims that when their paths are meant to cross, they will. It isn't until Emily's book of poems is mistakenly sent to Goodwill that her mother admits to writing Emily's father's name somewhere in the book. Emily must set out to find her book, and her father by rewriting her own destiny. Some mom, huh?

I knew that I had to be the Grinch because my heart grew two sizes the day I finished reading Destiny, Rewritten. It felt as if it would burst right out of my chest because I was felt with such overwhelming happiness and love for the characters, who are some of my all-time literary favorites. There is not one person in the book that I did not want to scoop up and squeeze into a bear hug.Destiny, Rewritten taught me something that I have been overlooking about myself - I LOVE stories that make references to other stories or pieces of pop culture. I found myself giggling several times throughout the book because of arguments that Emily Elizabeth Davis and Wavey St. Clair, her best friend, would have about female roles in Star Wars, Little House on the Prairie, or even paper towel commercials. This was a perfect little running joke (it has to be a joke because it was so hilarious!) to go along with Emily while she searched to find her lost book, unknown father, and herself. Emily's letters to Danielle Steele and love of romance novels' happy endings are also so brilliantly woven into the story. There are also tree-huggers, used bookstores, a cashier from Goodwill who is all things awesome, and more minor characters who kept me beaming. My absolute favorite part of the book, however, was that each child in the story was encouraged to be their very best at whatever they did. The children were supportive of each other, and not one of the adults ever treated any of them as anything less than the intelligent, nerdy, brilliant balls of potential they were. Yes, there are bullies and adults telling kids "There's no way you can do that!" in the real world, but there are so many people who are the polar opposite of that, and I think the book is a lovely homage to them. Cecily Ann likes to give science reports in poem form, but no one really gives her a hard time. Montie is an eight year old little boy who is counting the days until he can join the army, but nothing is said to dissuade his dreams or soldier-in-training behavior. Connor Kelly, Emily's crush, even had an entire conversation with her in haiku during English class. I seriously want to live in their neighborhood and be friends with all of them. This is far and away one of the best books that I read in 2012. Yes, it is contemporary (which I usually avoid), but Destiny, Rewritten is full of the magic of innocence and childhood. It reminds us that it's okay to be yourself, it's okay to chase your dreams, and sometimes your happy ending is where you least expect it.To satisfy FTC guidelines, I am disclosing that I received a digital ARC of the book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This has in no way affected the outcome of my review. All opinions expressed are rambling, honest, and completely my own.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. great maze book By Pulgitamija I love this book. My daughter is 4 and we homeschool. I am using this to prep her for next year. She loves these mazes and feels great when she does one. They are challenging but she can do them with guidance. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was due to the crease. The mazes go over two pages open and the maze trail goes through the crease in the book. To see where the right path is you have to really, really bend the pages. It would be better of this was staple or spiral bound to see the path through the crease. Otherwise this is a favorite

“Visually, the book is a marvel, with panel after panel of Bertolucci's gorgeous palette of jungle greens disrupted by the tiger's distinctive orange blaze. The other animals are beautifully rendered, and the storytelling has the feeling of an animated film.” - Publisher's Weekly (Starred Review)“Visually eloquent story...” - School Library JournalA day in the life of the king of the jungle, this lavishly illustrated story follows a single majestic tiger through a wordless adventure of survival as it hunts prey and defends itself from other would-be killers defending their territory. This exciting tale is told without narration or dialogue, conveyed entirely through the beautiful illustrations of Federico Bertolucci.A beautiful, all-ages title that explores genuine natural behavior through the dramatic lens of Disney-esque storytelling. Like a nature documentary in illustration.

Love Volume 1: The Tiger, by Frederic Brremaud

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—This wordless story is the first in a series of wildlife books that each focus on a day in the life of a different wild animal in its natural habitat. A full-page panel of the jungle setting framed by lush limbs and vines gives readers a view that puts them into the action from the very first page turn. Only a few words of text on the dedication page set the tone for this series by enforcing the idea that animals don't deal in love and hate; rather, they exist in a delicate balance that recognizes both parts as a universal or "elemental love." The first animal who comes into view is the majestic Bengal tiger who is the main character of the first volume. The tiger expertly hunts a tapir who manages a risky, but successful, escape via waterfall. As the story progresses, readers are introduced to many predator and prey relationships that support the overall theme of balance in the animal kingdom. There are multiple scenes of violence in which animals battle, sometimes to the death, though there is not too much bloodshed. Death is represented by the stillness of the creature that loses a battle as opposed to a complete destruction. Once a death has occurred, the pacing moves the story forward gracefully and there isn't much time to dwell on an animal's passing. The book ends with a scene of violence in which the tiger attacks a human who is cleaning his weapon and preparing the skin of a recently slain beast. An excerpt from The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri bookends this tale with thoughts on death and nature. The finely detailed watercolor artwork that offers unique perspectives and close-up views of jungle life combined with expertly controlled pacing gives this graphic novel a nature documentary feel. This book was originally published in France in 2011, and it received the special jury selection award at the Festival of Comics in Italy of that same year. VERDICT This beautiful slice-of-life graphic novel presents a realistic view of the balance between predator and prey in the jungle and is a strong addition to most collections.—Samantha Lumetta, Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH

Going in to the novel I knew that it was going to be about animals but boy was I surpised by the level of quality in the artwork and the story. This is my review of this new series that aims to captivate the hearts of readers.___________ARTWORK: The artwork here is brilliant. Everything is finely detailed and reminds me a lot of the world of Avatar. It is that good. It almost feels like the setting is in another planet but it is in the indian forests of this world. It is beautiful and I just can't stop staring at the pictures(It's all in color by the way). The closest thing to describing it the artwork of Tarzan but that still does not do it justice. There is a couple of pages at tthe end of the volume dedicated to design artworks that artists might get a kick out of. For me it is a bonus to an already great work of art.____________PLOT: There are only two pages in the book with written words and mainly it gives readers quotes on the nature of animals. This book is about the relationship that animals have with each other and how they interact about the world. There are no words, no sound effects. Everything is visual and it truly is an artistic masterpiece. It is a hidden gem in the world of graphic novels and I embrace it with all my heart. The whole experience is immerse and you will not be disappointed.___________CONCLUSION: This is by far one of my favorite graphic novels that I have read this year and it does not even have words. It was a worthwhile experience and I am sure other readers will have my viewpoint on this book. I can't wait until the next installment comes out because I will definitely be on board. BengirlxD Approved.

Beautiful Art But a Bit Cartoony By Talvi Love Volume 1 is the first in a series following a certain wild animal and a day in its life - from the search for food, interaction with other animals, fights with rivals, and afternoon naps (volume 2 follows the story of a fox). The story is nuanced, with many twists and turns. The watercolor artwork is stunning - a joy to explore. Although wordless, the story follows a definitive arc (the search for the day's food). The jungle has never looked so lovely and the animals, though perhaps more cartoony than lifelike, are rich with lovely detail.Story: A tiger hunts a tapir. When his prey escapes, the tiger will move on. But other hunters and more dangerous prey make finding his next meal difficult. From crocs to panthers, elephants to mice, both the tapir and the tiger will have to survive the day against all odds. The pencil and watercolor drawings are exquisite. Beautifully drawn with nuances in color variety that you can only get from that medium. A very green jungle is transformed in shades and tints of yellow and blue then offset with reds. It means the orange/beige tiger and grey/white tapir really stood out in each scene. The backgrounds supported the main characters and surprisingly never overwhelmed themThe plot itself was a bit underwhelming. There is no moral here, no 'majestic animal of the jungle' or other statement. It's a simple survival piece with an introduction attesting to the "Love" of the title referring to animals neither loving nor hating each other. What threw me off in the story were the interaction scenes. E.g., the tapir runs from the tiger and ends up in a stream, goes through an underground river, and is ejected in a waterfall - without harm. It felt too unrealistic. Similarly, the tiger fight with a croc, in a piranha infested water, never felt particularly menacing. Especially since we see the piranha often but they don't really do anything in the story other than show off teeth. There are a wide variety of animals encountering each other. From red ants to baboons, python to a panther pride. Even the fox from the next volume. But oddly, many watch the action rather than being a part of the story (as with tree-bound peacocks). I had a hard time comprehending why they were there (other than as scenery or run in and steal a prey while the larger predators fought). But then, perhaps this story is much more about the jungle than the tiger. So while the story didn't engage, and the situations felt a bit too cartoony, the artwork was so incredibly stunning that I just enjoyed that with pleasure. Words definitely weren't needed as the story was quite successfully conveyed through the images. And the overall plot cleverly integrated all kinds of players who briefly connect and then disconnect with the story of the tiger search for food.Reviewed from an advanced reader copy provided by the publisher.

By Zachary Koenig There is no doubt that “Love: The Tiger” is a visual masterpiece. It is filled with wonderfully colored panels depicting a “day in the life” of a tiger in the jungle. There are no words, so the pictures HAVE to tell the story, and they do so with aplomb. One would have to look long and far to find a graphic novel as visually intriguing/stunning as this one.The problem, however, is that I don’t know what the “point” of this graphic novel is. I mean, I paged through it from beginning to end, but I didn’t feel like I was sucked into the proceedings. I wanted some context, and this was about as anti-context as you can get. I know that sounds confusing, but it is just a bit strange to see all these pictures and not have some kind of story be told.I think, perhaps, that the people who really will be able to enjoy this book are the ones who are able to completely immerse themselves in the visual world and get a story just from that. I do not possess such a skill, apparently, as I kept looking for written context when there is none to be given. Either I don’t have the experience necessary to appreciate a wordless graphic novel, or it just isn’t my cup of tea. I honestly don’t know which is more correct for me at this point.Overall, though, I can at least somewhat appreciate what the illustrators are going for here. Thus, I can at least rank it as “okay” and with some redeeming value. If you only read it for the experience of paging through a wordless graphic novel, that will be novel enough in its own right. The rest of your experience will likely be determined by your appreciation of stories told through the visual medium as opposed to text.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Books for Kids: Buzz the Bumblebee( cute bedtime stories! Wow!! By Angela I enjoyed all the bedtime stories that were not too long for a kids bedtime story as well as all the colorful illustrations so this is why I wish to give this a five stars review. It was a bit educational too without too much data thrown in just enough to teach them a little about how good bumblebees can be and if left alone then most bees will also leave you alone and they make the purest food around for us humans. So, I would like to readily recommend this ebook for kids ages 3-10. I received this ebook for free and in exchange II have now given it an honest review! Super work Uncle Amin! By Angela

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Book By MaryAnn It's a great book to read to your little one.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Captivating! By Momof3 Very interesting and captivating stories with very good life lessons. However, I give it a 4 star rating because of a couple of grammatical errors I spotted: giving = given ( in the strange flower story) and towards = toward ( in the sharing of honey story)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. DISCOVER KOALAS By Barbara Mojica One of several nonfiction books in the Miles Merchant series of animal books for children. Publisher targets book for ages five through fifteen. Definitely would recommend it for children ages eight and above. The photos are cute but rather small. Coverage of topics is extensive including appearance, size, types, environment, diet, predators, conservation, social behavior, communication and special features. Readers will discover that koalas are marsupials, not bears; and that unlike most mammals, they are generally asocial creatures.Recommended for middle grade and older children who are animal lovers. Nice reference book for teachers, librarians and parents.
