Marilyn's Monster, by Michelle Knudsen

From School Library Journal K-Gr 3—One of the poignancies of childhood is the waiting—for a loose tooth, to ride a bike, to learn to read. Knudsen's brilliantly simple narrative and Phelan's whimsical pencil and watercolor drawings speak to the universal need for belonging and the anxiety born of impatience. The story's opening sentence sets up the plot: "Some of the kids in Marilyn's class had monsters. It was the latest thing." These pet monsters each seek out just the right child, and that takes time, so at first Marilyn isn't worried about not having one of her own. But the longer she waits the less patient she is; she adjusts her appearance and behavior hoping to attract it and then tries to convince herself that having one doesn't matter anyway. "But they were pretty great. She could see that they were…." So finally, against the advice of her know-it-all older brother (his monster sits on his head like a squishy baseball hat), Marilyn takes matters in her own hands. She packs a lunch and sets out to find her monster—which happens to have gotten stuck in a tree while trying to find her. Every one of Phelan's monsters is wonderfully weird, and readers will have fun noting similarities between them and their human friends. VERDICT Pair this story with Mo Willems's Leonardo, the Terrible Monster (Hyperion, 2005) and Ed Emberley's Drawing Book of Weirdos (Little, Brown, 2002) for a ready-made guidance lesson or a fun storytime with built-in text-to-self connections.—Lisa Lehmuller, East Providence School District, RI

Review Knudsen ("Library Lion") once more offers a gentle reminder that sometimes you have to break a rule in order to do the right thing. ...It’s a lesson ideally suited for a helicopter-parented, standardized-test-soaked generation of girls — and boys, too — who are offered few chances to advocate for themselves and solve their own problems.—The New York TimesRich with feeling, it’s a warm, gently funny reminder to chase down one’s dreams, rather than waiting for them to appear on the doorstep.—Publishers Weekly (starred review)Knudsen’s charming story is a great fit for Phelan’s gentle watercolor-and-pencil illustrations. With just a few lines and brushstrokes, he depicts the wide range of Marilyn’s emotions, from wary hopefulness to sullen grumpiness to, finally, utter joy. The whimsical, friendly monsters are equally expressive, and their supernatural antics in the background will tickle funny bones. Little ones feeling lonely or worried about making friends will be empowered by Marilyn’s determined, take-charge attitude.—BooklistA surprising spin on monsters with nicely effective artwork—and heart.—Kirkus ReviewsEvery one of Phelan’s monsters is wonderfully weird, and readers will have fun noting similarities between them and their human friends.—School Library JournalIn Mr. Phelan’s tender and witty pencil drawings, we see goofy, preposterous monsters choosing their human companions.... Ms. Knudsen has packed a surprising amount of relatable emotion into this story of humility and derring-do.—The Wall Street JournalThis is an intriguing and offbeat story, and Knudsen’s matter-of-fact narration effectively draws readers into the situation, while subtly engaging kids at their emotional core.—Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Sweet, lovely book for monster fans of all ages By Skye Kilaen One of the sweetest monster books EVER. Michelle Knudsen is becoming one of my favorite children's book authors. In this soft book, schoolgirl Marilyn gets tired of waiting for her monster to find her. Everyone in her class has theirs already. So she goes to find it herself, even though that's not how things are "supposed" to work.I love Marilyn's quiet determination. I love her kindness to her monster once she finds it. And I super-love how expressive all the faces are in this book. Phelan knows his stuff! Plus, how fun would it be if everybody had their own monster?p.s. to the #weneeddiversebooks crowd, of which I am a proud member, I'm 90% sure that Marilyn is biracial, with a white dad and an Asian mom. At the very least, you can easily see it that way, even if it wasn't intentional.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Where's your monster hiding? By Bob Walch No child should have to go without having a monster to share special times with. Unfortunately, the little girl in this story finds that she has a very hard time connecting with her special monster. It takes awhile and she almost gives up but in the end the girl discovers that there was, indeed, a special monster out there just waiting to find her. This is a lovely and humorous story that children four and up will enjoy. There are some subtle messages here as well about not giving up and friendship...This is a very cool monster story that isn't the least bit scary!

My 8 year old twins will always love Big Mean Mike as their favorite, but this is a close second. Thank you Michelle, please keep the incredible books coming.

Fly is fed up with everyone studying butterflies. Flies are so much cooler! They flap their wings 200 times a second, compared to a butterfly's measly five to twelve times. Their babies―maggots―are much cuter than caterpillars (obviously). And when they eat solid food, they even throw up on it to turn it into a liquid. Who wouldn't want to study an insect like that?In an unforgettably fun, fact-filled presentation, this lovable (and highly partisan) narrator promotes his species to a sometimes engrossed, sometimes grossed-out, class of kids.

I, Fly: The Buzz About Flies and How Awesome They Are, by Bridget Heos

From School Library Journal Gr 2–4—A whimsical approach to the life cycle of flies. Large, colorful illustrations immediately engage readers through dialogue bubbles and colorful cartoons. Children learn all about eggs, larva, pupa, and adulthood through the narration of one fly who resents how much attention butterflies get: "Well, guess who else metamorphoses, can fly, and is beautiful (at least according to my mother)." Understudied and not as well liked, the fly is shown to be an important insect that greatly aids in decomposition and composting; the author includes discussion of maggots, rotting fruit, and environmentalism and dispels the myth that flies are dirty insects. Readers learn how the bugs help solve police crimes and how they further the study of science in the lab. This book will be a lively read-aloud to introduce students to environmentalism or to generate conversation and new ideas and will be enjoyed by independent readers.—Tracey Wong, P.S. 54/Fordham Bedford Academy, Bronx, NY

The buzz on "I, fly" By Janet I would have given it 5 stars for it's unique value, after all there aren't that many children's books that discuss the value of houseflies. However, and I know this is a bit of a quibble, but the flies talk about how awesome they are by (mildly) putting down butterflies (calling them lazy and clumsy), so for me it means remembering to change a few words when reading it with little kids and it's really not a message I want alluded to in my children's books (that to be valuable it comes at the expense of others). Not a huge deal, but it keeps me from giving the highest possible rating. I do appreciate the overall message that even houseflies have their place in the world. We need more kids to start valuing life in all of its varied forms if we are to keep our planet healthy and safe.I particularly liked the glossary and other fun words to know at the end. Words included were halteres, setae, milkweed, and ptilinum, for example. Cool words that even some (many!?) adults will be able to add to their vocabularies. The book talks about how fast a fly beats its wings (200/second) and about a fly's metamorphosis, too. I think most kids will enjoy the story and the cartoon photos. A few real photographs would make this informative book even better. Nevertheless, I do recommend the book and am grateful the message is out that perhaps we should pause a moment before disparaging the little ole housefly.

A bear can come in handy as a playmate, a best friend, someone cuddly to keep you warm on a snowy day, or keep you company while sick in bed or lonely. A bear to travel out of town with, and go on big adventures with. Wherever you are, it’s always nice to have a bear that’s always there to share the moment, give a squeeze to, and love you through thick and thin. As a kid, I had a few very special teddies that were always there for me, no matter where or why! For anyone who ever had a teddy or anyone with a baby now who does- you’ll love this book! Kids love to be asked questions almost as much as they love to ask them. And asking is important—parents know the value of having meaningful conversations with their kids, especially as family time is under continuous assault from gadgets and devices. Now the book that solves those needs is back—announcing a fresh new edition of The Kids’ Book of Questions. Including subjects like the Internet, school violence, and climate change, the book remains a timeless treasure. Here is a collection of questions designed to challenge, entertain, provoke, and expand young minds. These are the questions that let kids discover how they feel; let people know what they think; raise issues that everyone loves to discuss. Gregory Stock, author of the original #1 bestselling Book of Questions, took his question-asking ways into schools and came back with over 200 questions, including Thorny dilemmas: Would you rather have a job you didn’t like that paid a lot or a job you loved that paid just enough to get by? Embarrassing challenges: Would you kiss someone in front of your whole class for $250? Provocative ideas: What things do you think your parents do just to set an example for you? Intriguing fantasies: If you could text any famous person and be sure they’d read and answer your text, who would you write to and what would you say? There is only one requirement: Give an honest answer. Then be amazed to see where one little question leads.

One example question "If someone came into your classroom and said you can sacrifice yourself and die right now and save your classmates or save yourself and all your classmates die immediately. What would you do? I am all for deep thought provoking questions, but some of these take it a bit far for children.

I remembered reading a similar version when I was little (I'm not sure if it was the same book). My kids (6 and 8) love it! They will pick it up every once in a while and ask me a question. Many of the questions have to do with lying, friendship, and other values. It's great to answer them and be able to teach my kids a little lesson when I answer. I'll answer and tell them when I thought that way and it's a great teachable moment. It gives me a chance to teach them about right and wrong in a fun way!

As a parent, grandparent, teacher and school counselor, I have known many families who have found this book to be an invaluable resource in their home library. It can be a fun way to enliven discussions during family meals. Parents always have the option of selection out questions they feel are not age-appropriate. I highly recommend this book to all parents of young children.

Migration is a complex and multifaceted issue, and the current legal framework suffers from considerable ambiguity and lack of cohesive focus. This Handbook offers a comprehensive take on the intersection of law and migration studies and provides strategies for better understanding the potential of international legal norms in regulating migration. Authoritative analyses by the most renowned and knowledgeable experts in the field focus on important migration issues and challenge the current normative framework with new ways of thinking about the topic.

The book examines the many facets of migration from an international law perspective. Topics discussed include the relationship between migration and state sovereignty, the human rights of migrants, human trafficking, migrant workers, refugees and internal displacement. The expert contributors hail from a number of diverse international law backgrounds (including refugee law, human rights law, humanitarian law, labour law, WTO law and others), allowing them to synthesize many different perspectives and present a comprehensive, cohesive and timely study of a complicated and fractured topic.

The Research Handbook on International Law and Migration provides a critical examination of migration and international law, identifying the issues still to be tackled and suggesting further developments to be made. It will appeal to advanced and postgraduate students, academics and policymakers.

Review This book, offers an outstanding collection of learned essays from over thirty expert contributors - including the editors - from top universities, government bodies and institutions worldwide... In this volume of almost 700 pages, there is much food for thought for the researcher and an almost endless supply of valuable references in the copious footnoting throughout. What a time saver! Additionally, there's a detailed index of almost twenty-three pages at the back. From graduate students, to seasoned international practitioners, anyone involved in the often extremely difficult human rights issues generated by migration will appreciate the book's practical as well as scholarly approach to this sensitive, diverse and increasingly complex area of law. The book therefore makes an important contribution to current literature on the subject. --- Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor, The Barrister Magazine

By Phillip Taylor MBE [[VIDEOID:mo2DEGUS75MV2I4]]OF MIGRATION EXHAUSTIVELY RESEARCHEDAn appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green ChambersVincent Chetail and Celine Bauloz from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Switzerland have produced a well-needed critical examination of migration and international law at a time when the issue is climbing to the top of the political agenda.Recently published by Edward Elgar, the book examines the topic from the perspective of international law, no simple task here, as the issue of migration involves a number of facets encompassing both civil and criminal matters, from human rights of migrants to state sovereignty, to human trafficking, refugees and displacement. This book, offers an outstanding collection of learned essays from over thirty expert contributors -- including the editors -- from top universities, government bodies and institutions worldwide. Together they present a selection of current research on key issues pertaining to migration, namely law, theory and policy, with a view to offering a range of perspectives on this continually expanding area of law that has attracted the interest, certainly of scholars and policy-makers as well as practitioners. As co-editor Chetail mentions in the introduction, `migration has become one of the highest priorities on the international agenda.'The book is divided logically into five parts. Part I focuses on state sovereignty in times of globalization, covering -- among other issues -- security, terrorism smuggling and trafficking of human beings. Part II examines such issues as detention of migrants, diplomatic protection and consular assistance of migrants, plus citizenship, nationality and statelessness. The emphasis in Part II is on economic migration, particularly in the European Union, while Parts IV and V contain at least ten essays on the various issues pertaining to refugees, internally displaced persons and the new challenges of forced migration. In this volume of almost 700 pages, there is much food for thought for the researcher and an almost endless supply of valuable references in the copious footnoting throughout. "We are living through the endtimes of the civilizing mission. The ineffectual International Criminal Court and its disastrous first prosecutor, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, along with the failure in Syria of the Responsibility to Protect are the latest pieces of evidence not of transient misfortunes but of fatal structural defects in international humanism. Whether it is the increase in deadly attacks on aid workers, the torture and 'disappearing' of al-Qaeda suspects by American officials, the flouting of international law by states such as Sri Lanka and Sudan, or the shambles of the Khmer Rouge tribunal in Phnom Penh, the prospect of one world under secular human rights law is receding. What seemed like a dawn is in fact a sunset. The foundations of universal liberal norms and global governance are crumbling."—from The Endtimes of Human Rights

In a book that is at once passionate and provocative, Stephen Hopgood argues, against the conventional wisdom, that the idea of universal human rights has become not only ill adapted to current realities but also overambitious and unresponsive. A shift in the global balance of power away from the United States further undermines the foundations on which the global human rights regime is based. American decline exposes the contradictions, hypocrisies and weaknesses behind the attempt to enforce this regime around the world and opens the way for resurgent religious and sovereign actors to challenge human rights.

Historically, Hopgood writes, universal humanist norms inspired a sense of secular religiosity among the new middle classes of a rapidly modernizing Europe. Human rights were the product of a particular worldview (Western European and Christian) and specific historical moments (humanitarianism in the nineteenth century, the aftermath of the Holocaust). They were an antidote to a troubling contradiction—the coexistence of a belief in progress with horrifying violence and growing inequality. The obsolescence of that founding purpose in the modern globalized world has, Hopgood asserts, transformed the institutions created to perform it, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross and recently the International Criminal Court, into self-perpetuating structures of intermittent power and authority that mask their lack of democratic legitimacy and systematic ineffectiveness. At their best, they provide relief in extraordinary situations of great distress; otherwise they are serving up a mixture of false hope and unaccountability sustained by “human rights” as a global brand.

The Endtimes of Human Rights is sure to be controversial. Hopgood makes a plea for a new understanding of where hope lies for human rights, a plea that mourns the promise but rejects the reality of universalism in favor of a less predictable encounter with the diverse realities of today’s multipolar world.

The Endtimes of Human Rights, by Stephen Hopgood

Review

"Hopgood's point of view, sure to be controversial, is argued with clarity, passion, and verve. Hopgood challenges those concerned with humanitarianism to look beyond Western-led human rights organizations, especially to activists working within their own communities, for hope. It seems certain that this book will cause both celebration and discomfort, even outrage, within the human rights community. Readers with an interest in human rights policy, humanitarianism, and even cultural history more broadly will find much to like in Hopgood's brisk, witty prose, even if they are discomfited by his arguments.―Library Journal

"This is a provocative, angry book–and an important one. . . . The book is particularly good on the link between human rights and liberalism, and how the larger the human rights non-governmental organization is, the greater the likelihood that it has been tamed by capital, existing to raise money rather than raising money to exist. . . . This is a disturbing read, the anger driving the narrative, the passion evident in every paragraph."― Conor Gearty, Times Higher Education Supplement

"In this scathing indictment of the human rights movement, Stephen Hopgood contends that it has sold out its moral clarity for an alliance with interventionist liberal states. . . . Hopgood's provocation is powerful, and his privileging of locally and nationally inspired activism rings true. He does an excellent job of drawing together specific incidents to support his controversial views. . . . The Endtimes of Human Rights is a bracing alert for human rights professionals and all who care about global ethics. Scholars, practitioners, and NGO contributors will need to reckon with this important book."―Clifford Bob, Ethics & International Affairs

"According to Hopgood, we are witnessing the last gasp of human rights as the "prospect of one world under secular human law is receding" and "thefoundations of universal liberal norms and global governance are crumbling" (p. 1). It is from this vantage point that Stephen Hopgood launches into a nuanced and powerful demolition of the normalising metanarrative of the Human Rights agenda. . . . [T]his is a compelling text as Hopgood grapples with issues of 'who gets to decide global rules' and who gets to define “legitimate exceptions to them” (p. 2). Further, we see Human Rights are not, and never have been, above the fray of national sovereignty as organisations and states have always sought to set the parameters of the political sphere and define who would be excluded from the outset."―Brian R. Gilbert, Critical Race and Whiteness Studies (Volume 11, Number 1, 2015)

"[R]eadable and brilliantly written, as well as. . . [rich] in information. . . and. . . controversial but challenging ideas."―Pierre Hassner,Survival(June/July 2015)

"The Endtimes of Human Rights is a brilliant book. Stephen Hopgood puts forward an important and controversial argument about the cultural parochialism of the human rights regime and predicts that we are coming to the end of the 'church of human rights.' Drawing on cultural history, Hopgood traces the political foundations of humanitarianism as a parochial expression of European and especially Christian values, and its unconscious use of universal language to push forward the cultures and values of European Christianity. Hopgood takes us to the edge of a future where our comfortable and comforting language of human rights is unmasked for what it is: a language that grows out of particular cultures and historical circumstances at a time when these cultures are no longer dominant and circumstances have changed as power shifts in the global system. For many, this will come as an unpalatable, even shocking argument."―Janice Stein, Belzberg Professor of Conflict Management in the Department of Political Science and the Director of the Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto, author of The Cult of Efficiency

"The Endtimes of Human Rights is one of those books that will grab the reader's attention from the first page to the last. At the heart of this stimulating and arresting indictment of Human Rights as a movement consisting of believers, institutions, discourses, and ideologies. Stephen Hopgood asserts with sophistication and wit that it was virtually inevitable that Human Rights was founded on something of a false promise, that it was nearly inevitable that it would become 'corrupted' and twisted because of its own internal contradictions, that this corruption has led to its demise, and the consequence will be the end of the last of the great ideologies of the West. Some will object furiously to Hopgood's argument. Others will feel elightened and grateful by his bold argument. But all will be provoked, and it will be impossible to think about international human rights in the same way."―Michael Barnett, George Washington University, author of Empire of Humanity: A History of Humanitarianism

"This barnstormer of a book is both rigorous and a page-turner, both provocative and careful, both deconstructive and constructive. Stephen Hopgood challenges all fans of human rights with the prospect that the human rights movement is collapsing in its moral authority. Whether readers shake or nod their heads as they make their way through the pages―and I find myself doing both―they will find themselves engaged in a sparkling conversation with a lively intellect."―Daniel Philpott, University of Notre Dame

"Human rights, Stephen Hopgood argues in this hard-hitting provocation, began as the last version of Europe's Christianity but was transformed into the imperial language of America’s hegemony. Hopgood compellingly analyzes the mutation of advocacy from sentimental compassion at the grassroots level to 'international justice’ among elites, preparing his powerful call for a return to the decentralized movement that first allowed humanism traction. The Endtimes of Human Rights suggests that when the church goes wrong, the time can come to call for a reformation or even to celebrate a Black Mass."―Samuel Moyn, Columbia University

20 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Demise of the Human Rights Regime By Amazon Customer The basic tenet of that book is the distinction between human rights and Human Rights. The first can be full truth, the second fails the test of truthfulness. The capitalized Human Rights Regime is the collective of declarations, conventions and their official international and national institutions. It is a phenomenon that grew quickly from the 1970s and, according to Hopgood, is deemed to expire. For good reason, he thinks. Hopgood's book abounds with examples of how Human Rights Regimists invented norms and institutions that were supposed to 'deal' with gruesome situations, and in the end made no difference. As was the case in Sudan, Sri Lanka and Syria. As is happening with the International Criminal Court (ICC), the 'Responsibility to Protect' (R2P), the Cambodia Tribunal. Those who support these institutions claim that the world tends towards a globalization of transnational justice. But the actual direction, says Hopgood, is neo-Westphalian. Countries and cultures are not converging into a huge human rights pool, they are rather diverging into the separate domains of their political culture, religion and regional power. International human rights organizations, such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, are far from immune from this. Hopgood is an excellent critic: he is sharp, quotes from the widest array of sources and secondary literature, knows how to tell a story and argue a point. At places, one can only hope Hopgood is not completely right. That even if the ICC, the R2P and other UN machinery may collapse, there will be enough left of covenants and monitoring for human rights work to survive - sadder, slimmer and wiser.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not much of a puzzle. By Sheila Beall Ok, my grandson (3) will probably like it, but I am not impressed. The pieces are nice and sturdy and well illustrated, but it's hard to call it a puzzle, as all the pieces except the engine and the caboose are interchangeable. It also is very long and would have to be put together on the floor.

I love the little bit of quiet time it buys me. Beautiful pictures, double sized. This makes a great gift.

LOPICCOLO My very spirited and strong-willed 3 year-old-son has been asserting his "bossy voice" more than his "listening ears" lately (i.e. at home) so this book was the perfect read for us and we both thoroughly enjoyed the fun message and whimsical illustrations. We chatted beforehand about this being a fictional, pretend adventure, but that the story demonstrates the importance of listening, and now we have an inside, playful joke for me to reference at times when I could use a more light-hearted and fun redirecting strategy, instead of nagging him (i.e. "Remember what happened to Shellica when she didn't listen to her mom?!" followed by my funny/dramatic wink wink and tickles or hugs as he changes his mood from being bossy or defiant to perky and open-minded again). It's been a nice change of pace from feeling like a big nag. Don't get me wrong, he has plenty of other opportunities to practice his debate skills throughout our day, though, since I also value his independent thought-process.....within reason. ;) p.s. This book would also be a wonderful gift for an older child.Update on Jan. 30th: My son is asking me to read him this book multiple times a day this past week and enjoys acting it out.....Definitely money worth spent, thanks Jessica! :)

Shellica is a very fun little girl who just wants to swim, however when she doesn't listen to her mother everything goes wrong. Emerging from the water as a Mermaid Shellica finds herself in quite the pickle, one never realizes how many things it would be hard to do with a tail (or the constant need for water). Shellica learns a valuable lesson, and much like the now 1998 Children's Literature Classic "A Bad Case of Stripes", a lesson that kids and parents alike will value.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Read this fun and fin-filled adventure to find out By E. Scavnicky Shellica’s Mermaid Adventure is a delightful lesson in the importance of listening and bring grateful for what one already is/has instead of wishing to be someone- or something, else! Shellica's silliness and splashing end when she realizes she can no longer play with her friends the way she used to. Both my six year old son and four year old daughter couldn’t wait to find out if Shellica's spirits would be dampened forever. Read this fun and fin-filled adventure to find out! The illustrations are as beautiful as the story.

Ruby is the type of character that I really appreciate. There is depth to her. She seems a bit out of place, but she's the type of character you root for. You hope she can find herself before her past comes back to ruin her...or maybe even save her. You can't put this one down as you wait to see what's going to happen next. I loved the ending too. It's an amazing story with lots of romance, magic, and a real gem named Ruby.

Ruby has the characteristics and emotions of the "outcast" at school and you can feel the pain she has to just be normal. This book leaves you on the edge of your seat wondering when Ruby will break-through and find herself. This book is jam packed with love and lies and the hope that Ruby can regain the life she once dreamed of.

“Never underestimate the power of a good story.”

Good advice…especially when a story can kill you.

For most people, the story of their lives is just that: the accumulation of time, encounters, and actions into a cohesive whole. But for an unfortunate few, that day-to-day existence is affected―perhaps infected is a better word―by memetic incursion: where fairy tale narratives become reality, often with disastrous results.

That’s where the ATI Management Bureau steps in, an organization tasked with protecting the world from fairy tales, even while most of their agents are struggling to keep their own fantastic archetypes from taking over their lives. When you’re dealing with storybook narratives in the real world, it doesn’t matter if you’re Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, or the Wicked Queen: no one gets a happily ever after.

Indexing is New York Times bestselling author Seanan McGuire’s new urban fantasy where everything you thought you knew about fairy tales gets turned on its head.

Seanan is remarkably good at finding reptiles and amphibians wherever she goes, sometimes to the dismay of the people she happens to be traveling with.

Full Serial Review - Original and Enticing By Miss Bonnie Indexing was first released as a Kindle Serial and was a bi-weekly mini-party every Tuesday considering how eagerly I awaited the latest installment. The first episode is epic and I can’t even begin to express my love for it. The introduction to this fairy-tale world was perfection. It got a full 5 stars from me and set the bar extremely high for the subsequent stories. This fairy tale world was extremely similar in scope to the graphic novel series ‘Fables’ but in comparison I found the characters were more vibrant and witty and infinitely entertaining. Each Kindle serial, for the most part, managed as a stand-alone and didn’t leave you too exasperated with having to wait another two weeks for more. I say ‘for the most part’ because something happened around episode 8 (out of a total of 12) that took the series into a total nosedive, but I’ll get into that more in a minute. The ATI (Aarne-Thompson Index) Management Bureau is a covert government agency that monitors fairy tale manifestations and prevents them from getting out of control. According to Wiki, “The Aarne–Thompson tale type index is a multivolume listing designed to help folklorists identify recurring plot patterns in the narrative structures of traditional folktales, so that folklorists can organize, classify, and analyze the folktales they research.” This index system is used as the basis for classifying manifestations that happen in the real world, where children are born predisposed to being a Sleeping Beauty or a Snow White or even a Pied Piper. If unleashed, their fairy tale influence could wreak havoc on the world. All manner of fairy tales are covered: Peter Pans and Cinderellas, Donkeyskins and Beautiful Vassilisas, a Mother Goose, Wicked Stepsisters, Billy Goats Gruff, The Showmaker and the Elves, etc.So what worked well? Personally I loved the combination of fairy tales and urban fantasy that ultimately made up this story. It was imaginative and creative and really enjoyed the details that went into this. Each individual was given a bit of back story although I believe this could have been further expounded on to showcase their growth. While I didn't end up preferring one character over another, they all as a whole really added life and charm to this story. In the end though, I was left ultimately disappointed. When thinking back on the story as a whole, I think it was easy to overlook the choppy feel of the writing since we’re only given bits and pieces at a time. If read as a whole I think it would have been far more obvious and apparent that the story lacked a fully fleshed out plot and was really rather feeble. It didn't feel as if it was planned as a full novel and was instead planned out as each episode was written. Ultimately, the ending felt strange and disconnected from where it seemed like the story was going and left me with far more unanswered questions than I like.

Lame effort By WisteriaM I read 80% of "Indexing" and then I had to stop; The premise was interesting, and I really did want to know how it all turned out, but it just kept getting more and more painful to read.I thought the author had a good idea, but the writing seemed so lazy and sloppy: it's like she wrote every episode at the last minute of the deadline. There were numerous stylistic missteps, missed opportunities to add veracity to the world and its characters, and a glaring lack of internal logic (even a fantasy story has to make some kind of sense). Also the constant lapsing into the passive voice really drove me nuts, that and the fact that the author never met a gerund that she didn't like.[SPOLER ALERT]When I got to the part where a vicitim is left floating face-down in a pool because they wanted the boss to see him where he died (??), and they said that the victim was covered in blood but none of it was his (how would they know any of that, if he's still floating in water???), I literally said "what?" out loud. Then they had someone swim underneath him to check if his throat was cut. (????)Similarly, they save someone who's about to shoot up tainted heroin, then call a squad car to send her to the hospital. If she didn't shoot up and is okay, why the hospital, and why would a squad car take her there instead of an ambulance? And why did one character say that a certain smell was strongest in the kitchen they were in, when they haven't even been in any of the other rooms yet?[END SPOILER]I gave it two stars because I thought the story itself was somewhat interesting, but trying to read it was like watching an obscure foreign film with the wrong subtitles. I understand this author has a fan base that loves her writing, and that makes me sad for our future literacy. Encouraging this kind of writing does the author no service, she may never improve as long as she keeps getting 4- and 5-star reviews for this kind of dreck.

19 of 21 people found the following review helpful. 3.5 stars By PM I go back and forth on how much I like this serial. I like the characters...enough -- but I don't really feel like they do anything new. The villain was terribly predictable, in part because there wasn't really anyone else it could be. I think, however, that my lackluster feelings are in part due to the delivery. Every week would be good; but every two weeks doesn't work -- it makes it way too easy to be dissatisfied with the chapters, because in many cases, they aren't complete stories the way that ... say, Scalzi's Human Division serial was last winter.I do hope that it goes to a second season -- but I hope that if it does, McGuire writes it enough in advance to be able to deliver every week -- or else, makes sure that she makes each installment a more complete story in itself.
