5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Sweet and romantic, but not mushy By Reality in Frames I just finished this book and can honestly say that I thouroghly enjoyed it! I was concerned with how Cynthia Bruner would make a story about this girl who pretty much lives to fish, into a romantic story. But she did! Her writing is fun and sweet, painting such vivid images of the river and everything surrounding it. Her last book left me wishing the children's books she described were real. This one, well as a photographer in Montana, I just want to go photograph the beautiful scenes she describes!

Her characters are so well developed, I feel as if I made some new friends reading this, and was sad when it ended too soon. (Not that it was incomplete, I just didnt want it to end!) Having recently fished the Big Horn, I have to say her writing is spot on, she has done her research. This is one of those books that take you away on a wonderful adventure!

Her characters are easy to identify with and she always makes me long to be out in the great big skys of Montana enjoying the surroundings. Great quick read.

A stamp that said FRANCE! My brothers were playing in a lacrosse tournament overseas, which meant that I got to go to . . . wait for it . . . Paris! While the boys were off playing lacrosse, Mom and I planned to tour the entire city—the City of Light. That was what they called Paris. What I wanted to do most of all was to take a boat ride down the Seine—that was the river that flowed through the center of the city. My dad had to stay behind for work, so he would miss all the fun. Quel dommage! That was “bummer” in French, I thought, or maybe it was “it’s too bad,” or “scrambled eggs.” Giddy with excitement, I placed the passport back onto the middle of the kitchen table, so everyone could see it. It had my name, Gwen Russell; my picture; and my birth date, indicating that I was thirteen. “It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” I asked Mom for the umpteenth time. “Yes, it is. It’ll look even better with a stamp in it.” She looked at her cell phone. “The boys just texted. They’ll be home soon with pizza.” By “boys” she meant my three older brothers. There were four kids in our family. I was the youngest and the only girl, the only one who stepped on the mat when she got out of the shower, the only one who took her shoes off at the door, and the only one who’d never traveled overseas. But not for long. I pulled up the latest Shock Value video on my tablet and turned the sound waaaay up. I grabbed a broom, played air guitar, and sang along. I didn’t sing when the boys were around because they told me I was terrible, but when they weren’t around, I belted it out. I knew every word to this song. Shock Value was only THE most amazing band. I dreamed that one day I’d get tickets to one of their concerts. I wanted to see Winston up close. He was my total fave band member. Maybe because he was the youngest, but also because he was the cutest with a capital C. But I doubted I would ever get to see them in person, since tickets to their shows were like a bagillion dollars. A girl could still dream, and I did. I wasn’t the only one nuts about Shock Value. My brothers and parents loved them too. When the video was over, I played it again with the volume lower and jumped over the couch with a notebook in which I wrote song lyrics. I called it my Lyrics Notebook. Creative, huh? I jotted: I’m going to Paris. Café au lait. I can’t wait for France. To stroll along the boulevards. I admired my work. Okay, so maybe these weren’t the best lyrics, but I was getting better. Maybe one day I’d write a song for Shock Value. As I studied my notebook, the door to the garage slammed open, and Josh (seventeen), Topher (sixteen), and Charlie (fifteen) walked in, each carrying a pizza box. The kitchen instantly filled with the smell of boy sweat and garlic. They stacked their slices three high, grabbed extra-large Gatorades, and headed toward the stairs, where I knew they were about to play hallway lacrosse in between showers and burping. “Come on, Gwen,” Topher said on his way up. “We need a goalie.” The goalie was the one who kept the ball from rolling down the stairs. “I’ll be there in a little bit.” I pointed to my mom. “Girl talk, you know.” “No. I don’t know.” He flew up the stairs two at a time. I sighed. I said to Mom, “Tell me again about the flight.” CRASH! It sounded like the ball had knocked something over. “We’re leaving tomorrow evening, and we’ll fly all night on the red-eye,” Mom said. “AWW!” cried Josh. I was pretty sure he’d caught an elbow to the gut. I ran up to see the boy drama. No one was dead. I hung out, and as the hallway lacrosse game whirled around me, I put my earbuds in, played a Shock Value song, and imagined myself in front of each fab sight in Paris. Mom and I really needed some quality girl time. ASAP!

Most us think we have this under control but we probably don't. This book is a must read for anyone who cares about their financial health and future. My wife and I recently had our first child and thinking about our future has become so much more important. This book had the answers to our questions. It helped create a clear plan of our next steps to protect our future and our Son's future. Can you clearly answer these questions?- Do you want to protect everything you've worked so hard to build?- Do you have a clear cut plan on how you're protecting your family?- Do you want to maximize the benefits your family receives legally when you pass?If not, then take the time to read this book. It's a quick read with answers to the questions you're probably already thinking about. The knowledge and the resources have already helped me and my family. My guess is that it will help you too.

Or so she thought, that is, until a river troll kidnaps her best friend. Then she, pitted together with his other friends (one of whom is actually a changeling (a creature swapped for a look-alike human)), goes on an adventure up the river, into a world mixed with the modern world and the ancient myths of Scandinavia.What I Thought- This was a really good book with a great setting and cool plot line. I really liked how it didn’t hide that Zaria was adopted and she knew it . I also liked how her adoptive parents were nice. You don’t see that often in books (as an adopted kid, I like it when adoption is portrayed well). The characters and mythology are realistic, and the mythology was well explained, too. I like how Zaria tries her best to make do in a world she knew nothing about. There are some instances of d*** throughout the second half of the book that some parents may have issues with for younger kids. This was a good book and I will be looking for book 2.*NOTE* I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

By Voca Matisse Zaria is that shy, new girl at a normal school in Norway. She's used to moving, as the adopted daughter of a military officer. She's used to the normal doldrums of life. She lives to quietly escape into the pages of her favorite fairy-tale books. She just never imagined that the fairy tale worlds she loved to read about so much might be real!Zaria finds bravery, wit and cleverness within herself to overcome her fears and set off on a magical journey to rescue a friend. She bonds with 3 boys from school and a slew of fantasy creatures/characters along the way. Another classic in the making. She manages to save the day, but inadvertently messes other things up in the end. Another adventures seems promised for the future, as she feels a personal responsibility to try to set things right.In reading this adventure, you discover that Zaria is more than she or her adopted parents ever imagined she could be. I don't want to give spoilers, so I'll stop there.A great book for the young adventure fantasy fans. This book will definitely broaden the vocabularies of little minds!

Zaria will win your heart By kathy wedel This is a charming and intriguing story of friendship, loyalty, perseverance, and adventure within a fantasy land, where real people encounter trolls and other whimsical creatures. The heroine, Zaria, uses her wits to win the freedom of her friend and learns to be braver than she thought possible. The illustrations are simply outstanding and the audio book would make a great take along for a long trip. I think it is appropriate for all ages, but probably would appeal best to young teens and tweens.

By Angela I enjoyed it and I am sure that the kids who are ages 4-7 should get a lot out of it too info as well as the colorful pictures,too! The author told what these brave fireman and fire woman wear and even how much each of the pieces weigh that they wear to protect themselves while trying to protect us while putting out fires and rescuing cats from trees and other dangerous work. I felt he did a very super jobin writing this children's ebook and this is why it should have a five star rating.I hereby by now recommend this ebook for children from ages 4-7 who may especially want to be a fireman or fire woman when they grow up and or have questionsin regards to what these brace people do for all of us and even for rescuing their cat who finds their cat up in a tree or on a line way up yonder meowing for help to get back down on the ground next to their master or mistress. By Amazon Customer This book is the prequel to The Secret of Lakeham Abbey, and is in the tradition of a creepy, gothic tale. Like the other book, it's told in a series of testimonies from various players in the scene, each one revealing clues, red herrings and even outright lies as they defend or try to make sense of what happened. The structure is unusual and takes a bit of adjustment, since the narrative is not linear, but it is enjoyable as you try to pick apart each testimony in an attempt to work out the truth.The Dark Marshes is an enjoyable, clever little novella that is worth your time to read - but I have to admit that The Secret of Lakeham Abbey is my favorite out of the two. If you haven't read Sally Quilford's work before, I recommend you start here.

Hetty has been manipulated into making a loveless marriage, and then she is found knife in hand over the body of her dead husband. But is everything as it seems? The story is told as a series of testimonies by various people - including Hetty herself, her friend and one-time servant Nan, Hetty's true love Max, her maiden aunts who brought her up, and the doctor of the asylum to which Hetty has been admitted.It's an unusual structure for a novel but it works well, and by half way through I could not put this book down.

A fine lady in a nuthouse By Amazon Customer Chris & Pamela I was hopping this was a good book but found myself getting lost fast.Spacing and paragraph spacing was terrible.I'll give a C for clean N for no pornography N for no profanity that was real good. Piccurelli’s book, Love Comes Calling, is a delightful read! I loved reading every line and plot twist of this story. The characters are endearing, the plot captivating and the story not only well-written but unique!The author’s opening scenes of Love Comes Calling drops the reader into the main character Derek Spencer’s life immediately.The reader first meets Derek who is driving in his SUV, searching for an address. He wants to meet a lady named Charlotte Parkes and reveal his role in ruining her life and career dreams of working as a professional ballerina.Charlie’s face was injured in an accident and this line from the book says it all, “As long as her face remained in this condition, she would put aside any notions of looking or praying for a soul mate. No matter. She had the Lord to complete her. She didn’t need a man for that.” It sets the stage for what the author plans to do with the main characters in term of their faith in God and how the author shows how God restores the brokenhearted—face and all.But first, the author reveals the ins and outs of the inner thoughts of Charlie and Derek. The author also shows the reader in conversation between the sisters (Charlie and Jessica) that society’s norms for what is beautiful and what is not need to be challenged. Charlie thinks no man will ever love her with a face as damaged as hers. But Jessica assures her sister that there are many men in the world who would look right past those superficial “flaws” and embrace her inner—and outward—beauty but of course, Charlie does not believe her and as the story progresses, the reader sees how the author works with that situation to bring about change.The author does a brilliant job by introducing a plot twist within the first few paragraphs of chapter one, when Derek arrives at Charlotte’s house and her sister Jessica mistakes him for the contractor they were expecting. Charlotte goes by “Charlie” and her sister Jessica is a riot, a very vivacious and aggressive personality compared to Charlie.The author knows how to captivate the reader from the very first few sentences of Love Comes Calling and keep their attention all the way to the end of the story. It’s a book that you will want to read from start to finish with no interruptions or distractions! Love Comes Calling is worth every bit of my five-star rating! I look forward to reading more wholesome, captivating, creative and insightful fiction from this author.

In this new addition to her cause-related fiction, she deals with the issue of drunk driving and presents a story that embodies a very serious message within a delightful romance. People would not be satisfied until he went to prison for a long time to "pay for his sins". It is a fictional story, however, of a tortured man, wracked by guilt over things he had done. In his effort to assuage his feelings of guilt, he tries to fix those things by doing acts of service for the person who he had wronged. Charlotte (nicknamed Charlie) is anaive young woman who sees the best in everyone. She could never imagine that Derek is hiding a dark secret related to her disfigured face. As the two become more familiar with each other, a bond grows between them which makes it more difficult for Derek to reveal his part in her distress. Charlie's sister, Jessica plays the role of the suspicious, protective sibling, who wants Derek to pay for what he had done to her sister when she finds out the truth about him. Since Derek is a wealthy magazine editor, (his father owns the publication), he is able to immediately approve an article for print that Charlie wrote. The book comes to a climax when Charlie and Derek have a fight about who approved her articleFinally, Derek is able to ask for forgivness for his drunken driving that caused the scars on Charlie's face. But, in finding his redemption, she also finds her own by realizing that Derek loves her despite those scars. Drunken driving is a serious crime, especially when it leads to death or disfigurement, but Charlie was able to keep Derek out of prison by testifying in court about his conversion to Christ and his changed life. I'd say that's a big bundle of grace, wouldn't you? In light of people in the news that we hear about that have done equally horrendous acts, and have confessed and been forgiven, I think we owe them the same bundle of grace that Charlotte offered Derek! The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous and so unique and it's really enjoyable to look at all the fun details Kristine Lombardi adds to the characters and scenery. My son and I enjoyed discussing Lovey Bunny's actions and why her Mom reacted they way she did (I just love Lovey Bunny's Mom!). Anyone who has kids can relate to this story! It's a book you can read again and again with your child. Wish I could give it more than five stars!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Surprising Book - For a Child or By a Child? By Amazon Customer This wasn't at all what I expected. It's not an easy reader, and if the author is eight or nine years old, I would say it's well written; if s/he is ten or more, well, not really. I know I had mastered quotation marks by age ten, even if I forgot them some of the time. Summer Bill hasn't put in any at all that I saw, and it made reading difficult even for a prolific reader like me. If a child wrote it, again, it's pretty good; the vocabulary is worthy of a teenager, but the writing style is more of an eight year old's. I have downloaded this onto both my phone and my computer, so I will struggle to read the whole thing and then if my opinion has changed, I will tell you. But I don't recommend it for beginning readers or for children older than thirteen, unless they are not ready for more mature works (and don't understand or need such silly things as quotes). The subject is interesting, but I would really like to have had a better explanation of "aliens from the Bermuda Triangle" before learning about battle after battle ... especially with so few details. I tired of it as bedtime reading; if the purpose was to make the reader sleepy, it did succeed at that.

Since Waterhouse Hawkins first introduced the world to dinosaurs through his lifelike models, many of us have fantasized about what it would be like to be in the presence of prehistoric creatures. In this reissue of I Met A Dinosaur, a young girl's visit to see the dinosaur skeletons at the Natural History Museum has a powerful effect on her imagination. Soon, she is seeing benevolent dinosaurs everywhere in her life—a Stegosaurus wrapped around a gas station, an Iguanadon standing far out in a rainy lake, and a Tyrannosaurus Rex waving to her from behind a tree. Sheban's textured illustrations have a beautiful interplay between light and shadow that suggest an altered world where impossible events could occur. Some of the drawings even provide visual links between everyday objects (the shape of a gas station sign) and the details of a dinosaur (the plates on a Stegosaurus) that show how a child's imagination is stimulated. The final illustration has a wonderful visual symmetry plus a subtle reference to Vermeer's luminous scenes of domestic Dutch life. The simple rhyming text pairs well with the images and highlights the girl's ability to see dinosaurs, even though her parents continue to chide her gently about her overactive imagination. The final page provides some facts about each of the dinosaurs. From Kirkus Reviews A young girl's visit to the natural-history museum is intended to be an invitation to imagining dinosaurs everywhere-- in the park, at the gas station, behind the shed, on the lake. What begins with intrigue and the promise of adventure rapidly bogs down in humdrum poetry panels paired with mismatched illustrations. The musings in the girl's mind do not always translate visually into specific types of dinosaurs. For example, it's hard to see how two electric towers become a triceratops or how a moose could be mistaken for a brontosaurus (now known as Apatosaurus). The illustrations stand alone, enticing and atmospheric on their own, but too often fail to bring readers into a visual understanding of the metamorphosis mentioned in the abstract text. Exceptions to this are the scales of a stegosaurus that form the sign for the gas station and the lumbering shape of a diplodocus that mimics treetops and rooftops in the fog. A good-looking design includes a clean layout and thoughtful composition, but the book in general does not sustain the creativity evidenced in its first and final panels. It's the kind of book you want to give to all the kids you know, and have lying on your coffee table. The text and the art work really well together to tell a clever story about how imagination can enrich our life. You'll love it.

My son has it memorized. As an adult, I like the interplay between the child and her parents (she's imagining dinosaurs everywhere, and they keep telling her what real-life things she's seeing or hearing).

A sudden celebrity of sorts as she returns to a home she was too young to remember, she meets up with troubles, adventures, frenemies, and dangers like she's never known.Fortunately, she finds friends old and new who quickly become her new family and help her survive and escape by the skin of her teeth. When she discovers a great and ancient evil is coming to destroy her new home, she must choose whether to risk all of their lives to save them from death and destruction.A short blurb can't do this book justice. It's creative and fun, and I fell in love with the characters.The one problem I have with it is that I don't want to wait for the next book to come out. Most fun I've had since Buffy went off the air By Catherine Caldwell This book is full of all the things I love, chase scenes, fight scenes, supernatural creatures, and witty dialogue. It truly is the most fun I've had since Buffy went off the air. I think most fans of the Whedonverse would enjoy "A Tale of Red Riding," which is as full of smart-assery as it is adventure. I fell in love with the lead character on the first page, and was delighted at the end when she finally achieved her goal. Looking forward to the next book!

Believeable Role Model By Ali Lippman I am writing this review first and foremost as an auntie of seventeen, thirteen of whom are girls and young women. Neo Edmund's Red Riding: Rise of the Alpha Huntress is all about girl power. Wait, let me explain - when I say girl power, I don't mean "kicking bad guys' butts in your leather leotard and never having a hair out of place" kind of girl power. I mean real girl power. I mean making mistakes and learning from them. I mean maintaining one's fierce independence but learning to trust. I mean being a true friend to those who are true to you, even if they're not "cool" or popular - I mean doing what needs to be done, and sometimes what only you can do, even if it's reeeeaaaally hard and scary.Don't get me wrong, a fair amount of butt kicking does take place. But much of the time it's so our beautifully imperfect heroine can get herself out of self-made messes. Much of the time she trips or falters or encounters obstacles she really should have seen coming. She often fails the first or third or fifth time she tries to do something. The important thing is that she keeps going. She stumbles, but she gets back up. She fails by herself, so she learns to accept help. She hurts people who love her, but she makes amends. In short, she's not some unattainable superhuman ideal, she's a real person! Now that's a heroine I'd like all of my beautiful nieces to meet.
