Nothing—not even the chance to live—makes Dr. Korczak abandon the children of the Warsaw Ghetto. This profoundly moving illustrated book is based on the true story of the celebrated Polish educator, writer, and doctor Janusz Korczak. His works inspired the Universal Declaration of the Rights of the Child, which was adopted by the UN in 1959. With mood-setting artwork and lyrical text, Mister Doctor allows young readers to meet the remarkable man whose humanity and bravery still stand as a glimmer of light in one of history’s darkest periods.

Review Holocaust stories can be most powerful when seen through the eyes of an individual, and Simon, though a fictional child, is an unforgettable witness. Haunting and memorable. (Kirkus Reviews 2015-05-01)

Berek Janusz Korczak was a pediatrician who gave up a potentially lucrative practice to found an orphanage for the children he loved. And the children loved him; the nickname they gave their mentor was “Mister Doctor.” In this book by the same title, his story is told from the perspective of one of the orphans—who could be any of the orphans or all the orphans. The book opens with the last days in final period of the famous orphanage on Krochmalna Street; the Nazis invaded Warsaw on September 1, 1939, and shortly thereafter ordered the city’s Jewish population into the Warsaw Ghetto. The journey is one fraught with darkness and fear, as shown by the somber illustrations showing barbed wire. They walk past the house of horrors they know as the Black Palace. (I believe the author was referring to the infamous Pawiak Prison; I doubt the children actually passed that landmark, as it was on the opposite side of the Ghetto. However, the episode adds literary value to the narrative.) The horrors of the trek are in marked contrast to the soft, warm hands of Doctor Korczak and illustration of his favorite fairy tale character, Puss in Boots, bounding over a barbed blockade.Their new home was the best Korczak could find, but “the house of tears” at 33 Chlodna Street is clearly nothing like their beautiful old home; in one illustration, even the houseflies on the window sill are dead. Though flashbacks, the narrator recalls all the Old Doctor’s innovations: the children’s court, their newspaper, the bulletin board, postcards…. In the Ghetto, everyone clings to hope by celebrating their Jewish heritage and identity. Some children learn Hebrew. A professor teaches the children a poem, “Brothers,” by the great local poet, I.L Peretz, which they make into a song: “Light and dark, and in between/ All the colors come together./ We are all sisters and brothers/ From one father and one mother,/ And God created all of us./ The whole world is our nation. / We are all sisters and brothers.”The most poignant part of the life of Janusz Korczak is the final march, which has been remembered in diaries, poems, movies, and statues. In Mister Doctor, the last walk is portrayed in a beautiful fold-out. But the story does not end there; the Rights of the Child would be taken up by the U.N. and given global stature. Perhaps little Henryk’s canary wasn’t buried after all. Perhaps he flew up into the heavens.Mister Doctor is a picture book, but with the amount of text on each page, it is more suitable for older children to read on their own. The illustrations are beautifully executed and complement the narrative perfectly. The book is a little pricey, but the quality of materials is exceptional; it is issued in a library binding. Clearly, this is a book to be kept and treasured. It is curious that Mister Doctor is also available as an e-book. I fear an electronic medium would not do justice to the work of art this book is. The title is noteworthy, as it is the same as the first Polish biography, the one written by Hanna Olczak, who knew Korczak and Madame Stefa personally. A two page biography of Janusz Korczak puts the narrative in perspective; that, along with a short bibliography, will help students doing a book report—or a report on Mister Doctor himself, to pass his legend on.

He ran the orphanage in a way that was considered revolutionary. The children rule themselves. Why did Mr. Doctor do this? Why did the children agree to do it? Amazingly, the children do. Mr. Doctor also gives the children different cards, one for doing good, one for memories (a way to remember a special experience) etc. When the Nazis come and take the orphans to the ghetto, Mr. Doctor decides to make it fun by having the children pretend they are a circus parade. When it is time to leave the ghetto, the good Mr. Doctor goes with them rather than accepting the opportunity to live. Why?This true story is amazing. It grabs you as you read. The author writes this simply but elegantly. You are drawn into it also by the excellent illustrations. I finished the book with my heart fully engaged as it is a sad but necessary book to read so we do not forget the horror of the Nazis.Disclaimer: I received a digital galley of this book free from the publisher from NetGalley. I was not obliged to write a favourable review, or even any review at all. The opinions expressed are strictly my own.

Good Book to Intro Kids to the Holocaust By Heather Brown Written in a story format and told from the point of view of one of the children, Mister Doctor is the story of Janusz Korczak and his orphans during WWII. Even though he was famous, he still chose to stay with his young charges to their ultimate end. Mister Doctor is aimed at students in the lower grades. The drawings and sketches effectively show the dreary reality that the children lived in with stunning artistry. Janusz Korczak was and is famous in his native Poland as a writer, military doctor, and champion of children. It is great that he can become known elsewhere.

Welcome to Dr. Critchlore’s School for Minions, the premier trainer of minions for Evil Overlords everywhere. No student is prouder to be at Dr. Critchlore’s than Runt Higgins, a twelve-year-old werewolf. (At least he thinks he’s twelve. He was abandoned at the school as a baby, so he can’t say for sure.) Runt loves everything about Dr. Critchlore’s. He loves his classes—like History of Henchmen and Introduction to Explosives. He loves his friends—like Darthin the gargoyle and Syke the tree nymph. And he loves his foster family, who took him in when his wolf pack couldn’t.             But not everyone loves Dr. Critchlore’s as much as Runt. After a series of disasters, each worse than the next, it’s clear that someone is trying to shut the school down. It’s up to Runt, who knows the place better than anybody, to figure out who’s behind the attacks . . . and to save his home, and Dr. Critchlore himself, from total destruction.  Praise for Dr. Critchlore’s School for Minions “An Addams Family for a new generation, filled with bizarre, peculiar, and sometimes downright silly characters. Readers, whether evil or not, are going to love the imaginative world that is Dr. Critchlore’s.” —Michael Buckley, bestselling author of the NERDS and Sisters Grimm series “Werewolves, minions, evil overlords, junior henchmen, AND terrifying girl explorers. Dr. Critchlore’s School for Minions has got it covered. Clever and funny. I laughed throughout!” —Andrea Beaty, author of Attack of the Fluffy Bunnies and the bestselling Rosie Revere, Engineer "Dr. Critchlore's School for Minions is one cool ghoul school, but behind the monstrous mayhem and creepy, comedic antics is a heartfelt theme of friendship. Evil Overlords need not force their minions to enjoy this spooktacular romp!" —Tony DiTerlizzi, co-creator of The Spiderwick Chronicles “A droll addition to the magical school genre, worthy of a seat toward the front of the (Harry) Potter-wagon.” —Kirkus Reviews

Dr. Critchlore's School for Minions: Book One, by Sheila Grau

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—Runt Higgins is a werewolf. Well, sort of. He swears he turned once when he was seven, but his canines just won't come in. Luckily, Runt attends Dr. Critchlore's School for Minions, where "Slow and steady wins the race, if you have minions to sabotage your opponent." In her debut, Grau introduces a contemporary fantasy world that is a perfect blend of Hogwarts and Monsters University. Readers learn quickly, however, that all is not well in minion-land. Something is amiss at the School, and Runt is sniffing out the trouble. Backed by a humorous band of friends—Syke the half-nymph, Eloni the troll, and Frank 25, who can't keep his head on straight (literally)—Runt is on a mission to expose the evildoers sabotaging his school. Dr. Critcholore's is well paced, despite an overly pat resolution, complete with twists, red herrings, and zombies. The narrative is sometimes distracted by an overuse of canine-inspired expletives ("Dog Whistles!"), and readers are likely to be skeptical of the just-add-water friendship that blossoms in the last few chapters, but the humor alone keeps this one going. If readers still need convincing, just turn to one of the fantastic illustrations of zombies. Recommended for advanced elementary school readers and reluctant middle graders, this will appeal to a wide audience.—Taylor Worley, Springfield Public Library, OR

Review "A droll addition to the magical school genre, worthy of a seat toward the front of the (Harry) Potter-wagon." (Kirkus Reviews 2014-12-15)"In her debut, Grau introduces a contemporary fantasy world that is a perfect blend of Hogwarts and Monster’s University." (Taylor Worley, Springfield Public Library, OR School Library Journal 2015-01-01)"Runt's hapless attempts to do the right thing make him easily relatable amid themes of conquering self-doubt, wrestling with perfectionism ..., and searching for a place to belong, whether it's with a family bound by blood or one created in a lab." (Publishers Weekly 2015-02-23)"Characters are drawn broadly and deftly in a matter-of-fact way...The loopy cartoonlike illustrations highlight the story perfectly." (Donna Scanlon Booklist)"Grau carefully develops all her characters, and this rich cast helps to establish the setting as much as the descriptions of the school itself....Boarding school fantasy fans will flock to this new series, and it is refreshing to see one that features such a kind, amiable protagonist." (The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books)

I can't wait for the next one to come out. it was sort of like Harry potter, but not quite. Instead of wizards, it had monsters, the school aspect was simila, but after that it totally diverged into a completely new story. I so want book 2 to come out. Now please! The students in Dr.critchlores school are silkie's hunchbacks and regular every day humans who are trying to get to be a minion, the next in command for the next all powerful mad scientist. in order to do this they have to pass their classes atDr. Critchlore's School for Minions. only problem is someone in the school is trying to make sure that the school itself starts to shut down. could it be the nefarious doctor Vodun the headmaster at another school, or could it be someone else entirely.. it is up to runt higgin's a down on his luck orphan warewolf being dumped at the school (ala harry potter), to try and figure out who is sabotaging his school. Can he help Doctor Ctritchlore get out of the crushing depression? or disarm the bombs that someone has laced at the school's pillars before they explode?

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. I LOVED Dr. Critchlore’s School for Minions and so did ... By G. R. Jack I LOVED Dr. Critchlore’s School for Minions and so did my 12-year-old son who is a very reluctant reader. Sheila Grau is an incredibly funny writer and she tells an exciting story about a boy trying to save his school from ruin. The book creates a wonderful world of mini monsters training to be minions for the dark overlords who rule the world, but at its heart it’s a story about a boy who just wants to fit in. Runt Higgins is a great main character, wonderfully naïve with big ambitions. His quest to find out who is trying to sabotage his school pushes him way out of his comfort zone and into some very funny and exciting situations.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An Engaging and Well-Conceived School Adventure/Mystery, With Monsters By Pop Bop There are lots of interesting things going on in this book. Don't confuse these minions with "Despicable Me" minions. Dr. Critchlore's School is for training up top-drawer henchmen for Evil Overlords, and so is filled with every kind of monster, ogre, creature and evil spawn you can imagine. Except, of course, they're all just cheerfully decent sorts who are following a non-traditional career path. With this kind of book, it seems to me, you have to touch a lot of bases. You have to create an interesting and convincing school environment. You have to come up with an engaging hero with a compelling backstory. You need solid sidekicks and a wide range of entertaining supporting characters. And you need a decent action/adventure/mystery plot to keep everything rolling along. This book scores high marks on all of that. If anything the book sometimes can feel almost too busy. Our hero, Runt, is an orphan with a mysterious past. It's pretty clear that this is intended to be a series so we only get bits and hints about his true identity as the story moves along. MILD SPOILER. The main angle is that it's not clear that Runt is a traditional hench-monster at all - he may be something else that will only be slowly revealed. The running joke is that Runt keeps being put in with human minions when he wants to be placed with monster minions. That said, Runt is a bright, resourceful and upbeat hero who is a fine leading character. The book is told from Runt's point of view, and he never wears out his welcome.Runt's best pals, (budding mad scientist, tree nymph, Frankenstein monster with anxiety issues), are carefully drawn and given a lot of room to have their own personalities. This is complemented by a full array of supporting characters - fellow students, teachers, visitors, staff and so on, which allows for lots of bits of business and incidental funny set pieces. Much attention has been paid to amusing details of school life and so the whole School of Minions setting feels substantial, (in a casually light-hearted fashion). The actual plot is all over the place, but the basic thrust is that there may be a saboteur in the school. Because this is the first book in a series there are lots of sub-plots and lots of characters who will probably reemerge as important down the road. There is a very satisfying and suspenseful big-action finish. So, this was much deeper and more carefully developed than I expected. (I expected more of just an antic school-daze comedy with a monster twist). That's fine by me. This is a fun world filled with interesting characters. It strikes me that this would be an easier read than Potter level books and a nice intro to the style for younger readers ready to move beyond chapter books. The illustrations, which are detailed and nicely done, are humorous and would help a reader follow the story, which is a nice touch.I'm in. (I won an uncorrected proof of this book in a Goodreads giveaway. Apart from that I have no connection at all to the author or the publisher of this book.)

Legends: the Best Players, Games, and Teams in Baseball, by Howard Bryant

From School Library Journal Gr 3–6—This collection of short pieces outlines the history of baseball. The text is divided into three sections: "Spring," which showcases standout players; "Summer," which focuses mostly on teams; and "Fall," which highlights memorable playoffs and the World Series. A sports writer with ESPN and formerly with the Boston Herald and Washington Post, Bryant often takes a big picture view, considering events in a historical context. But there are plenty of moments of individual glory, such as Pee Wee Reese putting his arm around Jackie Robinson when the latter was being showered with racial epithets and Willie Mays's "perfect catch" over his shoulder in game one of the 1954 Series. Bryant doesn't shy from the darker chapters in the game's history, including the 1998 steroid scandal, which destroyed the reputations of sluggers Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, and the player strike of 1994. An upbeat, exuberant tone runs through this work. Some sections are thick with statistics, but this is clearly a book for sports lovers, who likely won't be dissuaded. The volume concludes with 12 pages of photos and a time line of key moments. VERDICT A strong choice for rounding out sports collections, this work knocks it out of the park.—Bob Hassett, Luther Jackson Middle School, Falls Church, VA

By Janet Hamilton Summary: Each chapter of this book stands alone, telling the story of a player or team. The first section, “Spring”, tells the stories of individual players from Babe Ruth to Rickey Henderson. “Summer” moves on to teams, like the 1914 Boston Braves and the 1998 New York Yankees. Finally, “Fall” recounts some of the more amazing World Series stories. Don’t worry, both the 1975 and 2004 Red Sox made the final cut.Pros: Not being a huge baseball fan, I thought I would just read a few of the chapters. I got hooked with the first story of Babe Ruth and ended up reading the book cover to cover. Even the most avid fan will likely learn something from this book, and will undoubtedly enjoy reliving favorite baseball memories.Cons: It seems like a no-brainer to have lots of pictures in each chapter. Instead, there are a mere 18 photos, all stuck at the end of the book.

Bryant shows us how these players were great, not only because of how well they played the game, but how well they lived their lives. A great read for any kid, sports fan or not.

By Amazon Customer This book is such a well written story that keeps you intently interested in the characters and what's coming next. Just the prelude alone was a beautiful and poetic piece that gains more meaningful significance at the end of the story. My husband and I read this to our granddaughter and ended up finishing it together because we couldn't wait find out how it would end. The story is very compelling and the characters are equally special. I had to have my husband finish reading it to me as I got very emotional at the end and couldn't stop crying (a healing sort of emotional release). I highly recommend this book and hope the author keeps writing as she now has big fans!! Paula McLaughlin

Dinosaur vs. Mommy (A Dinosaur vs. Book), by Bob Shea

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—From the opening pages, Dinosaur is ready to battle. In this installment, Dinosaur takes on his mommy. Each page turn offers readers a chance to predict what part of Mommy's day Dinosaur will tackle. For example, on one page turn he is sneaking toward a dark, open door in his pajamas—kids will relate to Dinosaur's tactics for waking up Mommy by bouncing all over the bed. Dinosaur continues to battle Mommy through breakfast, a shower, a shopping trip, and folding laundry. There's plenty of humor throughout these pages that will appeal to kids. In one scene, Dinosaur flushes his toys down the potty while Mommy takes a shower and throws underwear in the air while Mommy folds clothes. Mommy shows plenty of patience as she wrangles Dinosaur into the bath. Readers get a satisfying ending; even though Dinosaur puts up a fight, he is still greatly loved by his mommy. Kids and parents alike will relate to these familiar daily battles. Shea's energetic illustrations offer the humor that he's known for, and careful viewers will notice some characters from previous books, such as Unicorn from Unicorn Thinks He's Pretty Great (Disney-Hyperion, 2013). VERDICT Another great addition in the "Dinosaur vs." series.—Andy Plemmons, David C. Barrow Elementary, Athens, GA

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—Bad weather is on the horizon, and Badger is more than willing to help his forest friends prepare their homes against the storm. But when the rains start falling and the wind starts blowing, it is Badger's home that is demolished. Now that the storm has passed, Badger and his friends work together to rebuild a place for him to call home. A classic tale of friendship and teamwork comes alive with soft illustrations and lifelike expressions on the animals' faces. Chiew and Pedler work well together pairing text to image. Great book for teaching how to be a friend, empathy, and helping others, not to mention how to stop and take a breath and then problem solving. Love the pictures!

My 3year old has asked for the "Badger Book" every night at bedtime for the past two weeks. The illustrations are lovely, and the story has great themes about friends helping friends, making the best of a bad situation together, and framed by the idea that helping friends is how you grow up into a "mighty oak". (At least, that's my interpretation of the story.) Between the cuddley pictures and the helping friendships, it's a world my kiddo can happily immerse himself in, and I'm happy to have him do so. Bonus: my husband and I have enjoyed it too, even after reading it over and over again!

Be careful what you wish for, because magic is always two parts wondrous, one part cruel.

Book 1 of 9 in the Bride of the Harvest Wolf series

Reckless wild-child Sienna Kendrick has longed for one thing since she was fourteen—the attention of Thomas Zurent, the dashingly handsome son of the town’s wealthiest founding family. And on the night of the New Grand Cycle festival when this plucky weaver’s daughter turns seventeen she gets exactly what she desires. But is Thomas’ attention truly what Sienna wants? Or is she concealing a yearning within her heart for something darker—something taboo—something forbidden?

The hour has come, the clock has struck fourteen, and per ancient accord, the thirty-sixth bride of the Harvest Wolf is about to be selected. But will she be his beloved…or his dinner?

*** Includes special bonus features: maps & location illustrations, pronunciation guide, story world glossary, illustrated story world calendar! ***

Bride of the Harvest Wolf: Episode One is approximately 27,000 words long and is the first of 9 novellas in this imaginative, coming of age romance series where shapeshifter deities, magic, and mythology collide.

Interview with the Author

Q - So, what makes the Bride of the Harvest Wolf series special?

A - Well for one, the series is a young adult shifter bride romance featuring a strong female protagonist, and an Indigenous (Native) male protagonist who is also a shape shifter wolf deity. It’s a be-careful-what-you-wish-for story about two characters who both long to leave their homes and explore the greater world, and who suffer disastrous consequences as a result of their desires. But mostly this shape shifter series is different because it combines fairy tales such as Beauty and the Beast, and Red Riding Hood, with mythology and folk tales from around the world and weaves them into a narrative that is both familiar and yet part of a completely new fantasy world.

Q - So, why should readers give this series a try?

A - If you’re looking for something a bit different with diverse protagonists, original mythology and fantasy world building, and a romantic adventure, than this young adult coming of age fantasy is the shifter romance series you’ve been looking for.

And thanks for reading!

Bride of the Harvest Wolf: Episode One (Volume 1), by Kat Vancil

About the Author Kat Vancil grew up in the heart of Silicon Valley, California where she amused herself by telling stories to anyone around her--her family, her friends, random strangers...cats. Eventually she started writing those stories down instead of hanging out in fake Ikea living rooms and telling them to her friends. A valiant crusader for diversity, Kat blends geek culture, emerging science, and fantastical creatures to craft her unexpected coming-of-age tales of daemon royalty, super-tech, and shifter deities. Kat still lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband, two very crazy studio cats, and eight overfull bookcases. And when not running amuck in the imaginary worlds within her head, she can usually be found frolicking in general geekiness. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Bride of the Harvest Wolf Episode One By Lola This was a fun read, but as it's the first book in a novella series it is quite short. This book felt a bit like the introduction to the story and world. This episode takes place over the span of a day and we got a good feel for the world and how the human and spirit world were connected, how the town looked like. There was even a drawing to show what the town looked like, which was very helpful and gave a good feel for the town. Every year on harvest day a girl will be chosen as the next bride for the harvest wolf. The plot is a bit predictable, but I liked the way the story was told. I just felt like I couldn't get fully engrossed in the story as it was so short and I had to get a feel for the world and setting first. One thing that bothered me is that in the middle of the story we get a flashback to years and years before that to show what happened to the harvest wolf and I think it's part of the story of how he got trapped there. There's also the epilogue and it just didn't quite fit into place. The epilogue was confusing as we don't know enough then and the flashback was a bit jarring as it was so far in the past. It did provide some information though and I was happy we also got Kessel his point of view, although I didn't really could get a good idea of his personality. The blurb says it's a beauty and beast and red riding hood retelling, but I found the story to contain little elements of those two, for which I was happy as I don't like to be remember of other stories when reading a book. The main character has red hair and there's a wolf, so I can kinda see where the comparison came from, but that whole sentence almost prevented me from reading this book, which would've been a shame. While we get a good feel for the setting and world in this book I felt that getting an idea of who the characters are was a bit harder. Most of the story is told from Siena her point of view, she's a bit daring and outgoing, but a bit naive as well at times. I liked her overall and how she was curious. What I didn't like was later in the book when she did something I didn't quite like much, she made a hasty decision and didn't even knew the guy she had a crush on that well. Luckily things didn't go too far. I didn't like Thomas at all, who is presented as the love interest, he seemed a bit like a creep and I am happy things didn't go too far as I didn't like him for Siena at all. Reed on the other hand seemed like a great guy and he's Siena her best friend. Then there is Siena her other best friend Kaya and we see some of her family, her older brother and sister, her mother and grandmother. I did like that this book introduced us to many of the characters, although because it was so short there was no time to really get to know them. We also get a few chapters from the point of view of Kessel, the wolf. It explained his situation a bit and hinted at how and why he's stuck there. The world building and setting was both done very interesting and there's a lot of information in the first book already, it did feel like a bit much to take in as this world is quite different, but it wasn't confusing. It takes place in a bit of a medieval feel town, on a different planet and there's the moon which is actually the planet for the spirit people, the chapters mostly focus on the human home world, but we also learn a bit about the spirit home world. The focus is on the wolf in this book as it's the harvest time, but I hope we learn more about the other spirits as well. the spirits aren't really spirits in the traditional sense of the word though, but they are shape shifters who live on the moon world Lunaris. The world is pretty original and there's a lot of focus on traditions and mythology. To summarize: Bride of the Harvest Moon episode one is a nice set up for this series. We get to know a lot of the important characters, get a feel for the world and the story. It's a bit predictable at times, but I didn't mind too much. My main complaint was that it's so short and I have no clue when the next episode will be released. And there's a flashback in the middle of the book that was a bit jarring. I did like Siena, but I wasn't a fan of her love interest Thomas and I didn't like what they almost did and I am glad they got stopped. The setting and world building was done well and I got a good feel for the setting and world in this book. The world and mythology were pretty original and I liked learning more about the world. This first episode had a bit of an introductory feel, but I guess that's normal as it is the first book in the series. I am looking forward to the next book!

The book is mysterious and fascinating. Looking forward to part two. Hopefully it won't take to long to be released. Love Sienna' s character.

18 of 18 people found the following review helpful. for basic learning and more advanced tips By Patrick O The Windows 10 Bible certainly has a lot of material in it, covering what is new in Windows 10 and also a lot of what is consistent in Windows. In this, it's more of a reference guide for those who don't have a lot of background using Windows. I'm not a power user, but I've used Windows since Windows 95 and each version since then. For me, this book was about 85% review material, which I could see being very handy for someone new to computers in general. The rest of the material was indeed helpful. So, should someone like me buy the book? Maybe. The trouble with having more practical experience with computers is that while I know a lot I don't know what I don't know, so wouldn't know what to look for online. This gave me a fair amount of guidance in almost anything I'd want to cover, sometimes just confirming my methods or understanding is right, sometimes showing me what I could do more efficiently (or do at all). Some of the power user tricks getting into non-obvious adjustments were particularly helpful. In terms of style, it's very clear and well-written. The font is pretty small, and it's somewhat dense text, so might feel overwhelming at first, but as the reader gets into it, it's actually pretty inviting.

By Long-Suffering Technology Consumer The Windows 10 Bible is a good general purpose reference book for Windows 10 users. Nine broad categorical areas contain 40 chapters (plus four brief appendices) addressing both basic and advanced features of this operating system.Overall, this guide assumes less, not more existing familiarity with predecessor versions of Windows, and some of its discussions of features may seem too basic for those who are already strong users of Windows 7, 8 and 8.1. And while I was surprised by its lack of discussion of some of Windows 10 newest features (especially the Cortana personal assistant feature) and privacy considerations, it will serve most users just fine as an comprehensive WIndows 10 reference.

The update with the Dell went smoothly enough, but some bugs, such as always losing WiFi came with the upgrade.I saw this Windows 10 Bible on Amazon and jumped at the chance to get it and use it. First things first. This book has 854 pages! It is not a book that most people are going to read from cover to cover, but use as needed to help learn Windows 10 or solve problems that come up when learning this new operating system. For those readers like me who have been using Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, some of this book is going to be very familiar; at least as it relates to what you are currently doing with 7 and 8.1. Right off the bat, Windows 10 on my start-up screen looks like a cross between 7 and 8.1 and in some respects it is. The familiar Start button is where 7 users normally find it and 8.1 users will see some of their favorite aps on the desktop screen. So far so good. That Start button on the lower left is as friendly as ever. 10 makes it easy to get to everywhere you would like to go with a new browser, Microsoft Edge, or our old standby, Internet Explore. I have been using Edge and like it. My Dell has touch screen but the Toshiba does not. Windows 10 accommodates both very well.Chapter 1 gives us What’s New in Windows 10; I found little new in this brief introduction that I could use. Chapter 2 tells us about Navigating the Windows 10 Interface and many people using the old 7 and 8.1 are going to find much familiar material in this chapter. Chapter three gives us Getting Around the Windows Desktop. More nuts and bolts stuff for the new user of Windows. From this point on, the reader will be picking and choosing what chapters to read. I don’t have much use for things like Sharing and Securing with User Accounts and Family Safety Issues. Remember, this book has 854 pages. My guess is that readers will have a purpose for the chapters they select. Also, this book is not likely to find favor with techies who know as much or more than our authors. The bottom line for me is that I am happy to have the Windows 10 Bible available for reference and recommend it with noted reservations.
