Promised three free books at end. This starts a big hassle that would take me too long to explain. If I see offers at the end of any Uncle Amon book, I don't click on them. Saves me ftom irritation.

'Many years ago in Mytherranea, before the stars had names, when daisies were still called days' eyes, and the moon stayed up all night to keep the darkness company, there lived a race called redbits...'So begins the tale of Rensal, a small creature trying to make sense of a big world. Running along one day, Rensal bumps into the Tall One, a wise and mysterious redbit who loves to talk. Over tea, toast, and berries, the friends discuss life, love, creation, dreams, death, and everything else that lies under the sun. This is a book that gets to the heart of what it is to be young, of the joys and sorrows and confusions of childhood, and of the questions that continue to be pertinent even when we are full-grown - how we live, how we love, and what - if anything - it all means.

Rensal the Redbit: A Psychoanalytic Fairy Tale (The Karnac Library), by Eugene J. Mahon

Review "Eugene Mahon has written a dreamily whimsical, charming little book that is lovely to read and a delight to review. It is as poetic as it is philosophical, as undefinable in purpose as it is recognizable in the array of concerns expressed in it, as private as it is broad in its appeal. In a fantasyland that also is recognizable as our very own world, lives a young redbit (very like a rabbit but infinitely more singular, with his colorful pelt and piercingly inquiring mind). He romps and plays, as the young will do when circumstance allows. Increasingly, however, he is interrupted in his carefree child’s pleasures by observations of the nature around him and the nature within him. These command his attention and force him to stop what he is doing, cock his head, and wonder what and why. One day, he stumbles upon a marvelously Lincolnesque “tall one” who somehow has not forgotten what it was like to be awakened out of youthful innocence by increasingly coalescing glimpses of the wonderful and the terrible that constitute the animate and inanimate world that surrounds us and of which we are a living, breathing, feeling, acting part. Quizzically ambiguous, sadly sagacious, but ever patient and unintrusively kind and loving, he is ideally suited as an interested listener, a compassionate comforter, a wise facilitator, and a source of necessary bits of information that cannot be easily enough obtained elsewhere. The redbit makes regular visits to the tall one, who becomes his welcome friend. As they refresh themselves with endless cups of tea and slices of toast, augmented on occasion by a handful of fresh-picked berries plucked from the bounty around them, they converse about life and its manifold mysteries. Birth, death, love, hate, the warmth of safety and security, the thrill of daring and adventure, the here and now, the worlds that can be visited only with the soaring imagination, the awe-inspiring universe, the universal awfulness of the redbit (i.e., human) world of which they are a part--all is grist for their mill. Is this a parable about child psychoanalysis? Is it an inspiring but sadly poetic depiction of the joys and sorrows of parenthood? Is it a bittersweet expression of the nostalgic yearning for a youth which adults can no longer have except vicariously? As you will. The reader has prerogatives as well as the author. As for me, I hope that the story of little Rensal finds in his readers kindred spirits who will be able to read it from the heart. This slim volume, comparable to the best poetic fables of Aesop, Orwell, and Thurber, is simply a joy to read." (Martin A. Silverman)

Having finished it I wasn't sure whether Rensal the Redbit was a children's book or a book for children and adults of all ages. The language is simple but highly poetic. The dialogue between Rensal and The Tall One is often very wise and deep. At first Rensal is frightened by the Tall One but gradually they become close friends and talk about very deep issues such as war. death, God, prejudice and much more as each short chapter introduces a new topic. When the book ends you don't want it to end and you go back and start reading again and then the enchantment starts all over again. It's like a poem that delivers a little further meaning each time you let the words work their magic on you. There is much more that I could say but I think it is best for each reader to experience this little classic for him or herself. This book reminds me of The Little Prince and that is the greatest praise I could bestow on it, a praise it richly deserves.

By Grady Harp San Diego, California Author Leela Hope studied English Literature at Berkeley, earning a degree in 1989. Her writing covers a span of several genres, but she always returns to her first love, children's fiction. And it is there that her star shines brightest. Always finding something unique on which to base her stories, she makes each tale a learning experience for children as well as offering some pointers for parenting!Once again we meet Walter Wolf, 4 years old, starting school. His mother and brother Willy (in grade 2) told him school will be cool, and fun, but when he meets his friend Billy Bear in the park, Billy says school is a trap - that you're there all day and no naps. But his dad reminds him that Walter will be fine and along as he is polite and kind. So Walter isn't so afraid - is mom tells him it is just a place to learn and grow, On the first day of school Walter has a good breakfast for energy, a lunch bag with a treat, and his mom and dad walk him to school. He meets his teacher who makes him feel welcome and he meets new friends and they play together and make the first day of school really fun. This well written book will be supportive to children just starting school. It reduces anxieties while providing a goal for them to anticipate. Grady Harp April 15

Good Book for Young Kids Concerned About Going to School By Sherry Ellis Walter Wolf is about to experience his first day of school, and he's nervous. His mom and brother, Willy, say school is great. His friend, Billy Bear says it's not. When he finally goes, Walter finds out that school is cool.Walter Wolf Goes to School is a good book for kids who are apprehensive about school. It'll help ease their fears, and give them good advice for how to behave. Told in rhyme, with colorful illustrations, it's a book that will appeal to children ages 4-7.

The plot deals with one of the shared experiences that most people have to undergo at some point in their lives: going to school for the first time. The language is simple and the story is easy for kids to follow. It is also quite predictable. Some of the eyes on the characters are a little creepy/glow-y" but it doesn't distract too much from the overall text.

“Complex and gripping. . . . Newcomers to Arcadia will be captivated by the rich history, while those familiar with it will find that Sophia’s legend grants them a new perspective on the earlier tales.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“[The Lizard Princess] encourages big-picture thinking. . . . The combination of a straightforward quest complicated by hindsight, with magic, science, and meditations on the building of myths and the role of stories, makes for a book not like much else out there. . . . Gorgeously written and complex.” —New York Journal of Books

“The impressive The Lizard Princess continues Tod Davies' imaginative History of Arcadia series with her trademark brilliant storytelling.”—Largehearted Boy

"Imaginative."—Jack Zipes, author of The Irresistible Fairy Tale

"Innovative form and spellbinding content . . . Stories, as Tod Davies's History of Arcadia novels ultimately suggest, serve as a civilization's backbone, and it is therefore in stories too that we can discover the potential for fundamental change and a better society."—Marvels & Tales

Bittersweet. Lush. Human. The Lizard Princess crosses mountains, oceans, deserts, and the Moon Itself to meet her fate and the fate of Arcadia on the Road of the Dead. Her reward is the Key that opens the door to the Domain of Life where wisdom trumps knowledge, as it should in all good tales about the world, whether Arcadia's, or our own.

Tod Davies is the author of Snotty Saves the Day and Lily the Silent, the first two books in The History of Arcadia series, as well as the cooking memoirs Jam Today: A Diary of Cooking With What You've Got and Jam Today Too: The Revolution Will Not Be Catered. Unsurprisingly, her attitude toward literature is the same as her attitude toward cooking—it's all about working with what you have to find new ways of looking and new ways of being.

Myers It seems clear to me that the modern/postmodern world is undergoing a major shift in values—or to put it in the language of myth, that we've undertaken a new journey. In her surrealist-tinged fantasy novel The Lizard Princess, Tod Davies brings both passion and a fundamental vision to this journey—not least because she understands so deeply just how crucial Story is to the enterprise. As the plot unfolds, the titular princess—very unlike the shallow princesses of so much lore—is seeking both to find herself and save her threatened kingdom. But in transrealist stories like this, plot is only part of "what happens," since symbol, dream, and story "people" this world in their own right. Although I've never met Davies, she's published some of my work in her Exterminating Angel Press Magazine; I'm reviewing the book, however, precisely because of her luminescent understanding of myth and other forms of "fantasy" narrative. I asked her if I could review it because I too believe that Story is one of the most human of behaviors, one of the great gifts we find before us in the world, one of the great powers that come naturally to our hands. The Lizard Princess embodies this belief in many ways, for example, in the way a particular cycle of stories has to be not only heard but more deeply understood for Princess Sophia to come to the fullness of her self as well as to her queenhood. I don't agree with every aspect of Davies' philosophy, but overall her values will resonate powerfully with anyone who, like me, believes that human culture is now in a watershed era and so is struggling to create new myths for a better world. And there are such riches in this book! I love, for example, the False Moon, built by a technology-mad society and set in space in mockery of the real moon, a false Utopia built on consumerist thrill and blind domination of nature. I love the Ruined Surface of the planet beneath it, where the poor must live but which the rich from the False Moon must periodically visit to restore their health. I love the star window, the one aperture on the False Moon that looks out on the actual universe. And I especially love Davies' wise and profound view of Death, her understanding of its vital natural role. Consider too the language of lines like these: "Was I not the Lizard Princess, whose warm blood mingled with cold?"--"…it seemed to me that many things that had been obscure would become clear to me now."--"It is far more dangerous to be an object of envy…than to be one of scorn."--"We swayed on that Bridge between the False and the Real…" And my favorite: "It was summer as we walked, as it always is on the Road of the Dead." You'll be swept up into the story of the Lizard Princess.

Where is Curious George? Around the Town: A Look-and-Find Book, by H. A. Rey

About the Author

The Reys were born in Hamburg, Germany. Hans Augusto Rey (1898-1977) met his wife-to-be, Margret (1906-1996), at a party in her father’s home in Germany; when he first caught a glimpse of her, she was sliding down the banister. In their twenties and thirties they lived in Paris and in Rio de Janeiro, where Hans sold bathtubs in villages along the Amazon River. Eventually Cambridge, Massachusetts, became the Reys’ home and community. Throughout their lives the Reys created many lively books together, including SPOTTY, PRETZEL, and lift-the-flap books such as HOW DO YOU GET THERE? The manuscript of the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and CURIOUS GEORGE was published in 1941. Their incorrigible little monkey has become an American icon, selling millions of books and capturing the hearts of readers everywhere. CURIOUS GEORGE has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.

This time he needs your help to seek items hidden with in the pictures of the story. Each two spread page layout finds him in a new part of town with new objects to seek! The heavy cardstock type pages should hold up well to heavy library use. We recommend this to children that love the hidden picture type books.

My 3 year old grandson loves it! In addition to finding George on each page, there is a lot to see and discuss with your toddler - I highly recommend the book.

The 5 and 3 year old breezed through in no time flat-- even the just turned 2 year old could find the hidden pictures SUPER fast. Our girls usually enjoy repeating books and activities even when they know the outcome or answers... but this one was so simple that I never see them picking it up after the first two times.

Public School Superhero, by James Patterson, Chris Tebbetts

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—By day, Kenny Wright is an average middle school kid, living in Washington, DC. But he has three things against him: he loves his grandmother, earning him the nickname "Grandma's Boy;" he's smart, because Grandma makes him study; and he has an affinity for chess. These facts could make life rough for any kid, but at inner-city Union Middle School, it makes him a prime target for bullying. Enter his alter-ego, Stainlezz Steel, a superhero who performs feats of valor from thwarting a robbery by ruthless thugs to rescuing cats, generally keeping the city streets and his school safe for the weak and nerdy. Union Middle School faces some tough situations as well: budget cuts, teacher and principal turnover, and low-performing students. Trying to stay out of trouble seems to get Kenny in deeper and his new principal isn't having any of it. Can Stainlezz Steel save the day or will Kenny find a way to save it on his own? Packed with fast-paced, tween-speak, Public School Superhero will entertain and enlighten. Kenny is relatable and his relationship with his grandmother is touching. Kenny is African American and his classmates include kids from a rich and realistic diversity of racial and ethnic backgrounds, adding to the overall appeal of this novel. Readers will also enjoy the multiple pages of funny, comic book-style illustrations packed with superhero stunts and preteen angst. VERDICT Definitely buy this one.—Carol Connor, Cincinnati Public Schools, OH

Review Praise for Public School Superhero: "The authors never get too preachy for their own good.... Told with the humorous style characteristic of Patterson when he's in preteen mode, the novel fits right in with I Funny, Middle School, and the like. Adding to the book's charm [are] comic-filled pages that help further illustrate Kenny's inner workings as well as present just plain fun superhero stories. A smart and kind story topped with just the right amount of social justice."―Kirkus Reviews"Packed with fast-paced tween-speak, Public School Superhero will entertain and enlighten.... Readers will also enjoy the multiple pages of funny, comic book-style illustrations packed with superhero stunts and preteen angst.... Definitely buy this one."―School Library Journal "With admirers of all ages, don't be surprised if everyone wants to get their hands on [Patterson's] latest."―BooklistPraise for I Funny:A #1 New York Times Bestseller"....Poignant.... Readers learn about [Jamie's] devastating loss and recovery from a tragic event....The affecting ending, which reveals a more vulnerable Jamie behind the guise of his humor, celebrates Jamie's resilient spirit."―Kirkus Reviews "In all, a brimming bucket of bada-bing!"―Booklist"The broad humor that runs throughout this heavily illustrated story... masks personal pain, demonstrating resiliency in the face of tragedy."―Publishers Weekly Praise for Middle School, The Worst Years of My Life:* "As Patterson artfully weaves a deeper and more thought-provoking tale of childhood coping mechanisms and everyday school and family realities, readers are drawn into a deeper understanding of and compassion for the main characters."―School Library Journal, starred review"Readers will discover the best kind of child: one that is intelligent, artistic, and brave.... A world perfectly described through a 12-year-old's point of view...a satisfying and progressive tale with real sweetness."―Kirkus Reviews"A keen appreciation of kids' insecurities and an even more astute understanding of what might propel boy readers through a book.... a perfectly pitched novel."―Los Angeles Times"Cleverly delves into the events that make middle school so awkward: cranky bus drivers, tardy slips, bathroom passes and lots of rules.... Hopefully, this isn't the last we hear from Rafe Khatchadorian."―The Associated Press"It's a chatty, funny, engaging book, one that often addresses the reader directly. It's filled with energetic cartoons... that will appeal to your little rebel, depicting teachers as dungeon-keepers, matadors and flying dragons. Patterson... knows how to structure a plot and builds in some surprising--even touching--twists.... Rafe is the bad boy with a heart of gold."―The New York Times"The book's... dynamic artwork and message that 'normal is boring' should go a long way toward assuring kids who don't fit the mold that there's a place for them, too."―Publishers Weekly"Incredibly detailed and imaginative illustrations . . . add depth and humor. . . . an enjoyable story that even the most reluctant readers should enjoy."―Library Media Connection"There is substance as well as appeal here.... Patterson deftly manages the pace of revelations that take readers deeper into Rafe's fragile trust.... Readers ready for something else in the same vein but more substantive than Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid or Peirce's Big Nate should be introduced to Rafe."―Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

About the Author James Patterson has had more New York Times bestsellers than any other writer, ever, according to Guinness World Records. Since his first novel won the Edgar Award in 1977 James Patterson's books have sold more than 300 million copies. He is the author of the Alex Cross novels, the most popular detective series of the past twenty-five years, including Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider. Helps children learn torth...heir self-w By Annie Public School SuperheroWritten by James Patterson and Chris TebbettsNarrated by: Joshua BooneI do not know how James Patterson does it. Where does he get the ideas for these fabulous tales? Not only has he penned various series for adults but also for young adults and children. My eight year old grandson and I listened to Public School Superhero together and we loved it. He wanted to stay in the car and listen to the CD even after we got home. There are too few books that appeal to boys on today’s bookshelves. Parents and grandparents this is a fantastic book that will appeal to boys and to some girls. In Public School Superhero readers learn about their self-worth and how to make good choices in life. The art work in this book is fabulous and will appeal to grades 3-7, ages 8-12.Public School Superhero is the story of Kenny Wright, superhero extraordinaire; in his mind he is Stainlezz Steel, defender of the weak. Kenny is actually a member of the chess club and his nick-name is “Grandma’s Boy.” He seems to have a sign on his back that calls out to the bullies, “pick on me.”

Stanley the Farmer (Stanley (Hardcover)), by William Bee

From School Library Journal PreS-K—Growing wheat is not easy work. In fact, it is so difficult that Stanley the hamster needs the help of his mole friends, Shamus and Little Woo. Together they pull the plow, spread manure, drive the tractor, pour seeds into a hopper, water twice a day, scare away birds, and drive a combine. The result is a productive day, some beautiful wheat, and an exhausted Stanley. Teamwork has paid off again. Bee's latest Stanley book introduces some rudimentary farming concepts and vocabulary. The simple story is brightly illustrated with bold, digitally rendered images. Emphasized with thick black lines, the characters are easy to follow through the narration and the pictures. VERDICT This first taste of farming will be loved by parents and children alike and is a great addition to any early years collection.—Megan Egbert, Meridian Library District, ID

Review "With engaging characters, introductory questions, themes that capture and sustain young children's interest and simple, but informative storylines together with bright, uncluttered images, touches of gentle humour and tools of the trade frontpapers, these sturdily bound books are just right for the heavy handling they are likely to receive by enthusiastic preschoolers." Books for Keeps "This first taste of farming will be loved by parents and children alike and is a great addition to any early years collection." School Library Journal "Young children will enjoy the simple story as well as the bold, black lines and flat colors of the digital illustrations." Booklist "Steady and bright, this will appeal to toddlers looking for comfort..." Kirkus Reviews "Stanley is cute and adorable, and he is depicted in all sorts of scenarios which will interest young children. There is always work to be done on the farm - and Stanley is sowing the seeds. He needs to look after them to make them grow, and then he needs to harvest his crop. A simply told story which explains the crop cycle in carefully selected language accompanied by simple but descriptive pictures." Parents in Touch

This is part of a series. The other books in the series include Stanley the Builder, Stanley's Diner, and Stanley's Garage. And Stanley is a guinea pig! And in this case, Stanley the Farmer, Stanley is taking care of his farm, including harvesting the crops and working with some friends to water the seeds and just do that normal farm maintenance. The illustrations here work really well for a young audience. The colors are bold. They pop. There's a thick line surround all of the illustrations, so that makes the characters stand out, too. And there's a simplicity to it that causes you to focus on the character and what Stanley is doing day to day. And my word, he's cute. So there's, too. And it's a guinea pig! Lovely book. They are most likely suited for the little boy, but let's don't forget that girls love to learn about farms, garages, and building as well.Let's take a look at what Stanley is up to now. He also has a special helper, Shamus. Little Woo helps a bit, too.I like that Stanley's tools are all pictured in the front of the book so these pages can be used to help learn identification of tools. He has a very busy day preparing the field, spreading manure (phew!), and planting. At the end of the day, he does what Stanley always does.... bathes, eats, and goes to bed.A delightful series and one I can recommend for your special young child.DISCLOSURE: I received a complimentary copy from Peachtree Publishing in exchange for this review but no paid compensation. He’s a farmer. He works all day. This story tells what it is like to work a farm and plant wheat. The first thing Stanley does is plow the field so he can plant the wheat. He has friends who help him. They are Shamus and little Woo. I really like animals, especially hamsters. But this book just wasn’t right for me. It is better for someone my brother’s age. He is three. I read it to him and he laughed so hard about the farmers using manure. He thought that was so gross. I already knew about farming from school. I did like the pictures of the animals. I think this book would be good for any kids who want to learn the basics of farming. It’s easy to read and the pictures are fun.Review by Cameron H., age 5, New Mexico Mensa

A Great Book By A Customer This story all started when a farm girl from Kansas named Dorothy Gale, and her little dog Toto got sucked into a tornado and landed in a fairyland named Oz. In Oz she meets a bunch of strange characters, a scarecrow, tin woodsman, and a cowardly lion. Together they go on a mission to see the wizard of oz by following the yellow brick road. Each one wanting a different wish. On the way to the wizard they come across multiple things. And when they finally got to Emerald city the wizard told them that they must first kill the wicked witch of the west if they want him to make there wishes come true. Eventually they succeed in doing that along with multiple hard things to do. After all that they find out that the wizard is a "humbug" and he grants everyone's wishes. Except for Dorothy's wich is for her to return back home. So now Dorothy and her friends go on another adventure to find the Good Witch of the South. Well they found her and Dorothy got back home along with her dog Toto, and she had what she needed all along in order for her to return home. Personally in my opinion I enjoyed the book better then the movie. I would recommend this book to anyone with a good imagination, because I kept imagining the story as I read it. The book has some drawings in it wich makes imagining things a lot easier, it has drawings of the main characters, villains, and some of the scenes in the book such as there journey on the yellow brick road. I would also recommend this book to anyone if the ages of 10 and up.

Doroty and Toto get sweep up by the terible twister and she meets a good witch, who sent to the great Oz and you need to read the story to see how the twisting tale ends up, the book is a little different than the movie. Its great for any age kids or adults.

2 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Good, But Undeserving Of Its Status By K3fightingfires@hotmail.com Actually two and a half stars. America has, unfortunately, produced fewer true "fairy tales" than Europe. And though Americans could enjoy the old stories, simple and universal as they are, we needed new ones with the distinctive qualities of our land. "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", American tall tales, and the comic book creations of the 1950s and 60s are what we have produced to fill the gap. When I first read this book at 7 years old, I was disappointed it was so different from the movie, which I loved then, but as I've grown older I've found the book to be superior, because it depicts Oz as less of a benign candyland. Despite this the book (and its sequels even more so) is seriously flawed. These are flaws of imagination: like the works of Roal Dahl many of the people who read the Oz books see them as unbridedly imaginative. They arent. C.S. Lewis built a cousin-world to Oz with much more imagination and style in his far better Narnia books. Read them instead.
