Beautifully illustrated baby edition to The Art of War By Kitty Smith Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" is one of China's Seven Military Classics, and its influence extends far beyond the battlefield and into business tactics, legal strategy, and life lessons in general in both Eastern and Western thinking. When I saw this children's book I thought, brilliant! All children can benefit from the wisdom of learning to plan ahead, think carefully before acting, and consider the consequences of their actions.I'm sharing this baby edition to The Art of War with our grandkids and they love it. The illustrations are beautifully done, showing Sun Tzu as he shares his wisdom with young Sun Bin. While he is sharing battle strategy the lessons can be applied to our children's modern lifestyle. It is simple enough to explain how, while they will not be commanding any armies any time soon, instruction to put yourself in the proper position for battle can also mean to study hard and get a good night's sleep before taking a test at school. Love this!

Egyptian Treasures: Mummies and MythsFrom The Well-Trained Mind Press

From School Library Journal Grade 5 Up-Storyteller Jim Weiss brings a master's touch to this collection of myths and stories based on historical facts. Prefaced by background information about ancient and contemporary Egypt, the first story is a creation myth about brother gods, virtuous Osiris and cruel, deceitful Set. The succeeding tales describe the roles of Ra-Amun, Isis, and other gods and goddesses of the Egyptian pantheon. The final two stories deal with the pyramid builders and the grave robbers who ravaged their cherished treasures, and an engrossing story of the 1881 discovery of the astonishingly rich tomb of Rameses the Great. While all the tales are well-crafted, the last two prove that fact can be as dramatic as any fiction. The stories are carefully arranged so that they build one upon the other until the final tale helps listeners understand how monumental the discovery of the tomb was not only to those who entered it after 3,200 years but also to the people of modern Egypt. Weiss's telling is captivating, with subtle voice variations. His use of language envelopes listeners in a mysterious world of myth, but with a tone that suggests respect for the culture which has nurtured these tales and created a rich history. There is no musical accompaniment or sound effectsAjust the well-modulated voice of the storyteller whose pacing and expression are masterful. School and public libraries will find this a superb choice for fans of Egyptian mythology, history, and archaeology.Nancy L. Chu, Western Illinois University, Macomb Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Does NOT include Galileo and the Stargazers as indicated By Jenatinian This item would appear by the description to include the title "Galileo and the Stargazers". However, when I ordered this item with that implied, I did not recieve any Galileo and the Stargazers but only "Egyptian Treasures: Mummies and Myths". I mention this because I think this is false advertizing to indicate that this includes both stories when in actuality, it does not.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fun and educational By P. Stone Jim Weiss is an awesome story teller. This CD starts with a brief intro to why people settled in Egypt, and then goes through several stories that tell a chronological story about the Gods of Egypt. So it's really like one big story. It's engaging, and we love to listen in the car.

My children all beg for "more Jim Weiss"! They really love the Galileo and the Stargazers. The stories are fascinating and true and he is a gifted storyteller. Worth every penny and then some!

I have desired, like every artist, to create a little world out of the beautiful, pleasant, and significant things of this marred and clumsy world, and to show in a vision something of the face of Ireland to any of my own people who would look where I bid them. I have therefore written down accurately and candidly much that I have heard and seen, and, except by way of commentary, nothing that I have merely imagined. I have, however, been at no pains to separate my own beliefs from those of the peasantry, but have rather let my men and women, dhouls and faeries, go their way unoffended or defended by any argument of mine. The things a man has heard and seen are threads of life, and if he pull them carefully from the confused distaff of memory, any who will can weave them into whatever garments of belief please them best. I too have woven my garment like another, but I shall try to keep warm in it, and shall be well content if it do not unbecome me.Hope and Memory have one daughter and her name is Art, and she has built her dwelling far from the desperate field where men hang out their garments upon forked boughs to be banners of battle. O beloved daughter of Hope and Memory, be with me for a little.

110 of 115 people found the following review helpful. An Excellent Guide to Understanding Yeats' Early Poetry By Daniel Myers When Robert Frost (A not very likable fellow, when you read his biographies, despite his excellent poetry.) visited Yeats in Ireland, he made a comment to the effect that, "It's no wonder he believes in faeries." He was responding to the beautiful, mystical Irish landscape Yeats grew up in. This book, even though you're (probably) not in Ireland when you read it, will have you responding much as Frost did. The peasantry have so much of their pagan ancestry in their blood that, despite their ostensible Catholicism, their deep belief in "the little people" comes out as strong as ever when questioned about it. Reading these anecdotes, some of them grafted directly onto Yeats' early poetry, gives them a power they would not have had you not read this book and realized how "here and now" faeryland was to the common people at the time. The Celtic belief that death (into Faeryland)is far more desirable than birth is made beautifully apparent in this book. Hence, by the way, the celebratory Irish wake. Hence also this lovely poemHeardst thou not sweet words among That Heaven-resounding minstrelsy? Heardst thou not that those who die Awake in a world of ecstacy? That love, when limbs are interwoven, And sleep when the night of life is cloven, And thought, to the world's dim boudaries clinging, And music, when one beloved is singing, Is death? These sorts of things, as well as Yeats' poetry, are worth deep consideration in this present world where medicine is deemed omnipotent...and yet, nevertheless, we all die.

By Michael Chesbro In Celtic Twilight, originally published in 1902, Yeats recites several accounts of encounters with the faerie folk and with the people of Ireland of the time which gives us insight into Irish folklore, myth and legend.Yeats associates poetry with religious ideas and sentiment. And, I believe that he saw himself as writing for Ireland, but a shadowy Ireland of Celtic mysteries and legends, not the Ireland of the modern day. By modern day, of course, I relate this to the modern day of Yeats in the late 1890s and early 1900s.In the introduction to Celtic Twilight Yeats states; "I have therefore written down accurately and candidly much that I have heard and seen, and, except by way of commentary, nothing that I have merely imagined. I have, however, been at no pains to separate my own beliefs from those of the peasantry, but have rather let my men and women, dhouls and faeries, go their way unoffended or defended by any argument of mine."I got the strong impression from reading Celtic Twilight that Yeats actually believed in the existence of the faeries. Not just as some myth or legend, but as actual beings that exist in this world, though perhaps unseen by the common man. He wrote each story as if it was something that actually happened, having been related to him by the storyteller, or perhaps that which he had seen for himself in some past time, now recalled as he set pen to paper. There is a depth to Yeats' writing that lies just below the surface, something that's perceived more than seen. The idea that perhaps magic and the faerie folk are alive in the world of today, but unseen, or perhaps only seen from time to time as a fleeting shadow until one knows just where to look.It is interesting to note that Yeats was heavily involved in occult studies and practices as part of the Madame Helene Blavatsky's,Theosophical Society and later, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and finally in 1912 the Ordo Templi Orientis. This would have certainly influenced his outlook on life and his belief in, and dare we say ability to see the unseen things of this world.I too ask myself from time to time; just what unseen things exist in this world. Perhaps Yeats has seen that which other men can only hope for, or that which they turn away from in dread given the course of their spirits.Yeats also makes a profound observation: "The things a man has heard and seen are threads of life, and if he pull them carefully from the confused distaff of memory, any who will can weave them into whatever garments of belief please them best."I found Yeats' observation of particular interest, especially when it comes to theological or philosophical thought. If it is those things that we hear and see in life that forms the fabric of our beliefs, then surely we must take care that that which we see and hear forms strong enough threads so that the fabric we weave is not shoddy.Yeats' works help us build those strong threads in our lives. For, he certainly influenced the world at large with his writings. In 1923 Yeats was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, and in 1934 he shared the Gothenburg Prize for Poetry with Rudyard Kipling.

Review Praise for Sarah Ruden's translation of the Aeneid:"Robert Fagles, shortly before his death, set the bar very high for translating the Aeneid. Yet already the scholar-poet Sarah Ruden has soared over the bar. . . . The translation is alive in every part. . . .This is the first translation since Dryden's that can be read as a great English poem in itself."—Garry Wills, New York Review of Books (Garry Wills 2011-03-15)

About the Author Apuleius (sometimes called Lucius Apuleius; c. 125 – c. 180) was a Latin prose writer. He was Numidian Berber, from Madaurus (now M'Daourouch, Algeria). He studied Platonist philosophy in Athens; travelled to Italy, Asia Minor and Egypt; and was an initiate in several cults or mysteries. The most famous incident in his life was when he was accused of using magic to gain the attentions (and fortune) of a wealthy widow. He declaimed and then distributed a witty tour de force in his own defense before the proconsul and a court of magistrates convened in Sabratha, near Tripoli. This is known as the Apologia. His most famous work is his bawdy picaresque novel, the Metamorphoses, otherwise known as The Golden Ass. It is the only Latin novel that has survived in its entirety. It relates the ludicrous adventures of one Lucius, who experiments with magic and is accidentally turned into a donkey.

Barton Not only is the book and amazing insight into the culture, humor and storytelling of the ancient Romans, but the translation by Graves into the modern English as opposed to a slavish translation of the Latin into flowery medieval English is much welcomed. This translation is readable by anyone, and the humor, the insights, the lessons and the mythology enjoyable by the student as well as the casual reader. The Latin purist may scoff at the translation, but they will miss the entertainment value that Graves delivers. Excellent and approachable translation of this classic.

In hindsight, this was a mistake given the poor digital rendering of the text and the AWKWARD / OUTDATED translation. DO NOT! I repeat, DO NOT buy this edition, the $10 editions are much better

I had to read t for a promotional exam and found that I was very interested in the topics it covered. I was familiar with most of what it covered, but learned a lot too. Whether or not I get promoted, it was worth the read to learn what I did from this book.
