About the Author Steve Brezenoff is the author of more than fifty middle-grade chapter books, including the Field Trip Mysteries series, the Ravens Pass series of thrillers, and the Return to Titanic series. In his spare time, he enjoys video games, cycling, and cooking. Steve lives in Minneapolis with his wife, Beth, and their son and daughter.Lisa K. It’s a fun and suspenseful book, but it also makes a very important point about treating everyone fairly and without prejudice By Young Mensan BookParade This book takes place at an American History Museum. Wilson, a ten year old boy whose mom works at the museum, and his three friends named Amal, Raining, and Clementine meet up at the museum. Wilson wants to show his friends the new flag room at the museum. They enter the room and see that someone had used a black marker to make graffiti on one of the flags. The kids tell one of the security guards what had happened. He gets out a ladder and takes a look for himself and is shocked at what he sees.The kids venture off into a different part of the museum. They soon discover more graffiti work throughout various places around the museum. One of the new security guards thinks they did it and brings them to the Head of the Security. She knows the kids and knows that they would not do this. She yells at the new security guard defending the kids. She also asks the kids to find and make friends with the new security guards son. He’s not any nicer than his dad and both are raciest and prejudice. This doesn’t stop the kids from solving the mystery of the vandal.This is a great read for kids who are around ages eight to thirteen. It’s a fun and suspenseful book, but it also makes a very important point about treating everyone fairly and without prejudice. It’s important for people to not go around judging others by how they look or where they are from or stuff like that. There are four friends who work together to solve the mystery and help someone who was unfairly blamed for a theft. Amal is the Somali female protagonist and she is 11. Her American Indian friend, Raining, is interested in Ojibwe culture. All the friends are associated with the museums in the city which provides many teachable moments throughout the stories. The other friends are Clementine who is 13 and love art, while Wilson Kipper is 10 and is interested in dinosaurs. Learning abounds in this series of books. This book is set in the Air and Space Museum, so facts about astronauts and historical space events are included.This book was given to me for Multicultural Children's Book Day 2016 and is being donated to a Minnesota school.

By NYC Spinner I am always on the lookout for fun books for my nieces and nephews and this entire series is just a winner on all levels. Amazing illustrations - great characters - and wonderful lessons on teamwork for kids. My nephews loved all of these - hope to see more soon!

Stay with it until the end By Kendra This is the third book by Blue Balliett that I have read and every time I start one of her books, I want to love it. She creates such real and yet completely unique characters. In particular, in this book, Tommy, Petra and Calder are now thirteen and going through an-almost-too-painful-to-read-about-puberty. They stumble, literally and figuratively. They fall. They make mistakes. They love art and mathematics. Everything is here to produce a really fantastic read.But like with Balliett's other books that I have read, I find myself struggling to get through the story. The pacing is very slow, perhaps because the story is so intricately plotted. "Pieces and Players" reminds me a lot of "The Thomas Crown Affair," but with somewhat less whimsy and charm.I struggled with whether or not to rate this three stars or four and decided with four because I think, with this kind of novel, there is a reward for the reader in being able to complete it, in being able to see just how the story was plotted and the work that Balliett put into the story itself.I'm not sure I bought into the odd supernatural elements to the story, but, in the end, I definitely buy into the characters, Tommy, Petra and the others. Much like how the adults feel in the novel, I feel that those kids have earned my respect.

I loved Blue Balliet's first three books By Happybooks I loved Blue Balliet's first three books, did not read Danger Box, but did read, and love, Hold Fast. This book, which had all the right elements to make it exciting, fell flat. It seemed the author was trying to weave in too many threads, and juggle too many characters. The attempt to keep the story mysterious just made it frustrating for the reader. While I certainly did not want or expect everything to be revealed in advance, part of the fun of reading these stories is being able to partially solve the mystery, along with the characters. In this book, it felt like the author held all the cards. I felt as confused as the characters in the book. If that was the author's intent, she achieved it. However, it did not make for an enjoyable read. Still..it's Blue Balliet and her writing is far superior to so much junk that is out there, I had to give it three stars.

A Colorful Crossover of Fictional Characters and Real-Life Events in PIECES AND PLAYERS By KidsReads In this entertaining crossover mystery, characters from different Blue Balliett novels join forces to solve the most difficult art-related mystery yet.In three previous novels, Blue Balliett has portrayed three University of Chicago Lab School students ---Petra, Tommy and Calder --- who solve mysteries related to art and architecture. Firmly grounded in the real world, using real-life landmarks and masterpieces as inspiration, the mysteries also brought together three unusual kids who form an unlikely friendship thanks to their unique problem-solving skills. Now, in PIECES AND PLAYERS, Calder, Tommy and Petra are joined in their latest adventure by two other kids --- Zoomy and Early --- each of whom has been the protagonist of a stand-alone mystery by Balliett. Zoomy, who is legally blind, and Early, who lives in a nearby but very different neighborhood of Chicago, each bring their own skills and experience to the problem they are about to solve.And it's a daunting problem indeed. The kids are brought together by Mrs. Sharpe, a trustee of the Farmer Museum in Chicago, which has recently had 13 priceless works of art stolen in an overnight heist. These kids, each with their own perspective on the case, need to figure out who to trust --- and how to trust one another.Crossover stories are, of course, nothing new --- anyone who watched sitcoms in the ‘80s or read comic books knows that. But it is fun to see how these characters from Balliett's different fictional worlds join forces. Also fun --- especially for readers who have followed the characters since Tommy, Petra and Calder first appeared in Balliett's debut, CHASING VERMEER --- is seeing the kids mature from eager 11-year-olds to self-conscious and slightly awkward 13-year-olds, trying to navigate their friendship even as they stand on the cusp of their teen years.Readers who have previously rolled their eyes at the series's overreliance on coincidence and clues bordering on magical realism will find similar frustrations here. That being said, PIECES AND PLAYERS is still a convincing and well-thought-out mystery in its own right. Like Baillett’s other books, it's well-grounded in the real world, being directly inspired by events and controversies at two real-life art collections: Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and Philadelphia's Barnes Foundation. Although Balliett's Farmer Museum is fictitious, an author's note explains its indebtedness to these actual collections, and, as with Balliett's other mysteries, readers will likely find themselves inspired to seek out more information about these museums and their colorful histories.Reviewed by Norah Piehl

Set in the late 1580s, the story centers on two young girls who forge an unlikely bond, one which defies the conventions of their respective communities and threatens to shatter an already fragile détente. Alis is a colonist who's just arrived on the island of Roanoke with her family and a small band of English men and women intent on settling the New World. Kimi is a young Roanoke girl who watches the arrival of the white folk with a mixture of curiosity and trepidation. Over time, even as tensions mount and violence erupts between the two peoples, the young women find each other amid the confusion, hatred, and ignorance—communicating through gestures and simple words. Told in alternating voices, rendered in distinct font styles for each girl, the verses allow readers to see their relationship evolve from one of tentative friendship to a deep bond of sisterhood. As the girls become closer, their poems occasionally share a page, the short stanzas working together as meaning and understanding is reached. Rose's writing is accessible and filled with rich details describing the setting: the rough and ragged barracks in which the settlers strive to make a home as well as the vibrant natural beauty of Kimi's village and surrounding woods. Based loosely on the slim evidence surrounding the events of the infamous Lost Colony of Roanoke, Rose takes some liberties with history (explained in an author's note): there was no record of a young woman—other than wives and mothers—being among the group of settlers during that time period. But also nervous because I haven't really read any books told in verse before. But oh, I didn't have to worry. Because I found Blue Birds to be all kinds of gorgeous. The writing is so pretty. And I loved the way it is told. Though there is often so little text on each page. Sniffs. So these four hundred pages went by too fast. Wishing this book had been longer. But I also thought it was perfect the way it was. I'm giving this book four stars. I really enjoyed reading this.How to begin talking about it, though, I am not sure. Blue Birds is told from the point of view of Alis and Kimi. I adored them both so much. Alis is the English girl, and she's pretty amazing. I loved reading about her and hearing about her missing uncle. Sniffs. And her family too, her new baby brother. She also sort of gets friends with this boy, and oh, I wanted to know more of him. But yeah. Also pretty sad. Mostly I just really adored Alis. I loved what she chose to do at the end the most. She's so very brave.Then there is Kimi, who has lived on Roanoke her whole life. I loved reading about her so much. Loved getting to know a little bit about how they live, how they dress, and the small things they wear. It was pretty awesome to get to know. Kimi was also such a brave girl and I adored her so much. Reading about how they became friends was my favorite part. It was so sweet and a bit heartbreaking too. I liked it a whole lot. Because they are so cute together. And I wanted them to be together at all times. Sad face.There is so much happening in this book. Yet I felt like I finished it so fast and I felt like there weren't enough. But at the same time it was so perfect. I'm not sure what to share about this book. I could say forever how much I liked it. But I'm not going to. And I won't talk too much about the plot, so I don't think my review will be all that long. But still hoping I can manage to convince you to read this book. Because this book is for everyone. It's so beautiful. And so heartbreaking. There is a lot of sadness.Most of Blue Birds focus on the growing friendship between Alis and Kimi. And the things they do together. And how they learn to talk to each other. And how they try to keep each other hidden from their people. I enjoyed reading about it a whole lot. But oh. There is also a lot of sad things going on in this book. Many people die. It's kind of brutal. We learn of the people Kimi have lost. Her father. Her sister. And it broke my heart so much. Yet Kimi is being so strong and I couldn't help but love her. Time travel, and the bonds that tie a family together By KarToon12 After reading and enjoying Liz Kessler's, "A Year Without Autumn", this book popped up on a reccomended reading list, so I dove right in and wasn't dissapointed.A girl named Mia and her mom must rush to the seaside village of Porthaven where her grandma lives, upon finding out her grandfather's gone missing. At first, Mia thinks her summer is going to be a gloomy washout, until she discovers an old fishing boat with a diary on it. Using the diary as a pen pal letter, she begins communicating with a mysterious girl named Dee, who has alot in common with Mia. But when Dee's messages of danger and violent storms don't match with Mia's calm and sunny home, the girls realize they got a much bigger mystery on their hands. In time, the pen pals will finally meet...and Mia will connect with her grandparents in a way she never imagined.Much like, "A Year Without Autumn", this is another story involving time travel, and how the bonds of family can stand the test of time, Mia was a nice character to get to know, and is written like a real kid (and not a mini adult). Her relationship with her grandma starts off strained, but over time, they grow closer over their united worry about the missing grandpa. And while time travel will always have it's paradoxes, there wasn't any big holes in logic that I could find. If you've read, "A Year Without Autumn", just replace the time traveling elevator for a time traveling boat. But the "magic" really isn't that important, so much as the real point is to show that even despite a time gap, there's some things that never change.If you're into time travel and/or family drama, give this story a look. If anything, it sounds like it could've been an episode of the Twilight Zone.

Beautiful cover and beautiful contents By Ionia Froment I do realise as I write this review that this book is intended for a younger audience, but I could not help but fall in love with it. I think this is a story that all ages may be able to appreciate.From the very first few sentences, the reader is aware that this story is going to be interesting. The main character is likable and one of those innocent types that you want to get to know more about. I found that as her story unfolded, it was easy to put myself in her place and feel what she was feeling.I loved the dog in the story (Flake.) He was the type of addition that made the story complete and showed the compassion of the main character.As the book progresses, the main character discovers a journal that belongs to another girl and begins conversing with her through the pages. This was not the usual seen it and done it before journal that shows up in a lot of stories. Everything about this novel is magical. I liked the unusual, emerging friendship of the main character and the owner of the journal and it kept me turning pages.The missing grandfather aspect of the story was also very well written. There is so much mystery and beautiful description in this story that it is very hard to put it down and walk away.I did see a few plot stumbles in the time travel aspect of the story, but Time travel is difficult to write and it did not interfere with my overall enjoyment of the story.If you are looking for a book for your young adult, or for yourself, may I recommend this one. Beautifully done and what a lovely cover as well.This review is based off of a digital ARC.

It's about a girl named Mississippi. Her grandpa is missing, she finds a mysterious diary on a boat and she tries to find the girl who wrote the diary. Meanwhile she meets Peter who also wants to find the girl. The mystery is, where is the person who wrote the diary and how are her and Peter related.I think other kids would enjoy it because you can really get a picture in your head of what's going on. Normally I can't, but I can now with this special book. If you enjoyed reading Emily Windsnap, you won't be disappointed with Liz Kessler's new book.My favorite part was when they were on the boat and they were trying to find the girl who writes in the diary. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Such a Lovely Book By Jeannelovesbooks I bought this book for my two year old granddaughter and she loves it and so do her parents. I bought it because of the wonderful illustrations, simple text but rich language, repeating phrases and “Little Mouse,” the primary character. The book follows a little mouse through a year so there is a focus on the seasons and it gently celebrates the idea of planning ahead. My granddaughter loves the cut-away illustrations of his underground “house” with little tunnels connecting a kitchen, bedroom and storeroom. She connects things in his “house” with areas and things in her house. We read this book almost every day of a 2 1/2 week visit and I just talked with them this morning, a month later, and they are still reading it. It is different from The Little Blue Truck, but wonderfully so!

I received this as a Good Reads First Read book giveaway; I added it to my 3 year old granddaughter's library I've started for her from the time she was born. We read it tonight together and she loved it as much as I did. The little mouse goes through the seasons getting prepared for the final season the author takes us through winter. The mouse gathers different things to store back for winter in each different season. Experiences different things as he is out gathering things in each season. The language has a great rhythm, and the illustrations are wonderful. It's also the perfect length for bedtime. Not too long, not too short. So we can read it twice, or read it along with another book, and he's happy and ready to go to bed. My thanks to the author for putting a smile on my little man's face every night!

This is an early reader mystery, but it's not just that. This is an animal-detective adventure, but it's not just that. This is a Harold-and-Maude buddy comedy, but it's not just that. This is loaded with expressive, pretty pastel drawings, but it's more than just that. Think of "Wind in the Willows" meets "Columbo" meets "Crime and Punishment", as related, while you sip cocoa, by your coolest, slyest, mellowest grandfather, and you'll start to get the idea.Detective Gordon, a toad, is a consummate professional, but age is catching up to him. He takes on Buffy, an energetic young mouse, as his policewoman assistant, and the two navigate a gentle mystery about some stolen nuts. Gordon is quiet and observant and his every act is calculated, unobtrusive and to the point. Buffy is just so excited to have a home and a purpose. In a few deft lines and with a few simple drawings their touching relationship is established.On each page there is at least one line of dialogue or a description that reads almost like poetry. There are little bits of business that illuminate character and set the proper mood. A glance or a sigh or a moment of quietness can communicate volumes. We reflect on the nature of crime and of punishment. Heck, by the time I finished this I had started to understand the Ingmar Bergman films I watched 40 years ago.It seems to me that this book, with its many and rich rewards, fits pretty nicely into that sadly underserved space between chapter books and more advanced fare. It can be read and understood at a basic picture book level, but also read and appreciated by a more advanced and adventurous reader. It struck me as a book that would be better as a read than a read-to, but I think that's because to me the gentle whimsy, reflection and puckish humor comes across better to a reader than a listener. But I could be all wet there, and I certainly wouldn't hesitate to read this to interested kids.Ulf Nilsson is widely celebrated in his native Sweden, has over 100 children's books and picture books to his credit, and is understandably the highly regarded head of the Swedish Academy for Children's Books. His touch in this book is consistent, restrained and enriched by generous good humor. A charming Swedish import for primary grade readers and listeners By Janet Hamilton Summary: Detective Gordon is a toad who wants nothing more than to see crime and punishment eliminated from his district so he can drink tea and eat cakes in peace. When an agitated squirrel named Vladimir reports 204 stolen nuts from his treetop pantry, Gordon reluctantly investigates the case. In the process, he meets Buffy, a hungry, homeless mouse, and takes her in as an apprentice police officer. Working together, the two of them manage to crack the case, and the thieves manage to punish themselves. Grades 1-4.Pros: This Swedish import charms with gentle humor and cozy illustrations. The author (or translator) doesn’t shy away from vocabulary…the first chapter includes the words wretched, monstrous, plundering, and envious. This would be a good choice for a precocious first or second grade reader or a read-aloud in the primary grades.Cons: This book would definitely be a stretch for many in the intended age group

An older detective makes a young mouse, that is initially a suspect. his assistant after finding out his story. Together they work on solving the case of stolen nuts. There are alot of lessons learned in the book including very basic detective work. Geared more toward the early chapter book audience. As in Won Ton: A Cat Tale Told in Haiku (Holt, 2010), Wardlaw relates his tale through a series of senryu, short unrhymed lines of haiku containing a maximum of 17 syllables. This ancient form of Japanese poetry seeks to capture the essence of a moment, and Wardlaw uses it to humorous effect to capture Won Ton's horrified reaction to the new puppy, Chopstick. Won Ton defends his territory against the newcomer and acts out. There's an altercation at the dinner bowl: "Who. Ate. My. Dinner./Your eyes say "no-no," but your/breath brags of tuna." Yelchin's cartoony illustrations, using graphite and gouache on watercolor paper, convey Chopstick's wide-eyed innocence and Won Ton's prickly vulnerability. Though this is a stand-alone sequel, there are echoes of the first book, where readers learned that Won Ton's true name is Haiku; here, readers learn that Chopstick has a true name as well (hint: a famed haiku poet). Abundant wordplay and comic elements, such as Won Ton's repeated cry: "Puthimoutputhim/outputhimoutputhim—wait!/I said him, not me!" make this an enjoyable read-aloud. They are so sparely written and yet they touch your soul with the playfulness, message of friendship (both human and animal), the sadness of living in a shelter, the fear of leaving the shelter because it is a known entity, and the joy coming to terms with an interloper and becoming friends.Especially loved the playful and ever-so-true words from Won Ton, "Letmeoutletmeoutletmeoutletmeout. Wait–let me back in!" Haven't we all gone through that with our cats?Eugene Yelchin's (Eugene is a Newbery Honoree-some people get ALL the talent) illustrations have movement, personality, and emotion. Lots of negative space highlights the movements of the animals. I loved one of the last pages in Won Ton and Chopstick where the little boy is cuddling both of his beloved animals. This illustration exudes joy and comfort and would be a comfort to the child in your life.These are a must read/peruse/enjoy for animal lovers everywhere. Great job!

The poetry is never predictable, but always surprises with its fun language and playful phrase turns. Eugene Yelchin's illustrations are equally impressive. Seemingly simple, but I know better. Each character has a distinct and mischievous persona. This isn't just for dog and cat lovers (though they will gobble it up!) or poetry fans or whomever. This book is for everyone!
