Willy Maykit in Space, by Greg Trine

From School Library Journal Gr 2–5—Willy Maykit's father is a famous explorer who disappeared in the Amazon jungle more than a year ago. Despite that tragedy, the fourth grader wants to be as adventurous as his dad. On a class field trip to Planet Ed, he wanders off, following his father's mantra that there is always something interesting around the bend. Predictably, he and a friend get left behind when the class flees a violent storm. They wait for rescue, which comes in the form of Norp, a green-skinned alien, also left behind during his school field trip the previous week. He saves Willy and Cindy from the monsters that come out at night, but it's only the beginning of their troubles. Meanwhile, Willy's father finally breaks free from his jungle prison. With a snarky narrator, the story is funny and hackneyed in equal measure but pitch-perfect for the age group. The cartoon-style illustrations are amusing and plentiful and will attract reluctant and enthusiastic readers alike. Give this to fans of Jonny Zucker and Ned Woodman's "Max Flash" series (Lerner).—Gretchen Crowley, Alexandria City Public Libraries, VA

Review "The cartoon-style illustrations are amusing and plentiful and will attract reluctant and enthusiastic readers alike."—School Library Journal "Readers new to chapter books and who like to laugh often will most likely find Willy's story peppered with just enough silly humor to keep the pages turning. "—Kirkus "Effortlessly diverse in open, friendly ways...the two stories of bold adventurers headed back toward home are exhilarating. Readers seeking a speedy space thrilled and fans of Trine's other series will be well pleased with this outing."—Bulletin

Good chapter book for young readers By a "Willy Maykit in Space" may be a two hundred page book, but the print is large and double spaced, so it's probably more like a novella than novel. Chapters are short (less than ten pages) and consist of illustrations, some covering the entire page, so a child can read several in one day.My daughter likes these early chapter books, and it's a great way to get her to practice her reading before bed. Here, Willy Maykit, a boy with adventure in his blood, wanders off to Planet Ed with his "pet" Phelps. His crush, Cindy, goes looking for him, and both are stranded. They meet another alien, Norp, who was stranded several days earlier. The android pilot, Max, returns after dropping off the other students, only to crash the starship. They have to search for food, shelter, and hiding places from monsters...yes, the kind under your bed and in your closets. I don't think this should be too scary, at least not considering how they are portrayed. This is a good easy to read book for older elementary and junior high students, and the book feels as though the author is talking to you rather than just telling you a story. There are jokes, imaginative and wild adventures, sci-fi, and best of all, children who find their own solutions to some of their problems, and help from friends when needed.A definite plus - I don't recall any instances of adult or peer bashing, so overall a positive book. Younger kids will appreciate the silly knock-knock jokes (older kids may find them "not" so silly). The chapters are short and although there are 200 pages in this book, the pages are double spaced, the print is large, and there are ample black and white illustrations to also keep it visually interesting.Willy is a young explorer and he is excited about his school trip to planet Ed. This trip does not go as expected and Willy and a classmate get stranded on this unique planet. What comes next is his adventure to get home which includes befriending aliens and androids and running away from monsters. Will he make it? Your child will have to read the book to get the answer to that question. This story will probably not leave your child clamoring for a re-read but it should be entertaining enough to motivate them to read at least one chapter daily.

Being an 'explorer' doesn't mean you wander off on an alien planet with no equipment or preparation By Silea My oldest child is at the younger end of potential readers of this book, so my perception of it is colored accordingly.Over the course of the book, there are several good lessons to be learned. Be Prepared. Don't assume everything foreign is evil. Plan ahead. Kindness now can pay off later. There are, of course, several less-good lessons as well. Run off on field trips and it'll work out ok/Exploring means ignoring the rules adults set. Eating strange food just because someone else says it's fine won't have any consequences. Someone else will save your backside when you run into a situation unprepared. So, is it an entertaining read? Yeah, it's a good old-fashioned hostile alien planet story. The (inexplicably) hostile aliens are held at bay through a variety of clever ruses and poop jokes. However, several plot anchors seems more like 'teachable moments' than anything else.I'm going to keep this on the shelf for my kids to discover, but if i notice them reading it, i'm going to make sure i get a chance to talk with them about how 'everything turned out ok' doesn't mean 'all of the decisions made were good decisions'.

It seemed like she would enjoy these and they looked really cool to me. I opened up the inside and I love how you can't tell what the picture will be until the dots are fully connected. I might just have to order another book for myself. Thank you!**UPDATE 12/30/15** My niece didn't seem interested in the book at first, but once she started doing one of the puzzles, she could not stop! I will order more in the future. Highly recommend.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Nighty Night By prisrob When you go to bed at night, do you read stories or do you sing songs? What kind of things do you do before you go to sleep. The author, Anat Umansky, is a well known children's author in Israel. She writes lovely stories for children , and they are filled with love and kindness. In this book, she writes about all the creatures getting ready for bed and falling asleep. Everyone has a little different method for getting their nighttime rituals together. When you read this story, you will learn about many different ways to go to sleep.Parents/teachers will enjoy reading this book to their children. The children will be able to relate to the many different creatures, and how they go to sleep at night. Children will enjoy discussing what they do to get ready for bed at night, and what kind of stories their parents read to them. The illustrations by Geula Balt are very beautiful, colorful and vivid. They depict everything in the book and their good night preparations. One of the important parts of this book is that it is written in rhyme, and rhyme is one of the best methods to read to children. Children love the lilt of the voice and the words that rhyme. Such a lovely story of going to sleep at night. Note: a complimentary copy of this book was provided to read and review.Recommended. prisrob 03-30-15

Have a sweet dream Till the sun again rise' By Grady Harp Israeli author Anat Umansky continues her very impressive output of quality children's books with the current book ALL HAVE GONE TO SLEEP, ably assisted by her illustrator Geula Biat. Rather than concentrating on a story, this book is a charming mélange of wispy nighttime variations of quiet and sleep. The book details how at night all creatures - both animal and plant and a few inanimate objects also - go into the sleeping mode. The rhythm of the poetry is gentle, the images are beautifully rendered, and the feeling by the time the last page arrives is one of heavy eyes, and time for a nap or a good night's sleep. This is a genteel and perfect way to encourage children to fall asleep, knowing that all creatures and all the world is sleeping, too. Grady Harp, March 15

It seems to me that this book has been created with a lot of love and joy and it is very obvious to me that the author really enjoys creating such wonderful stories.I loved the effort the author put into writing this. The story and the illustrations are wonderfully done. I would absolutely recommend it! It's a wonderful read for the young...and the young at heart!A 5 Star from me every time!

This book (and another similar book) are both copies of the 1899 edition. The Land Transfer Acts 1875 and 1897 contained an early version of the English land titles system. The current version is in the English Land Registration Act 2002.The Land Titles Act of Ontario, Canada is essentially the same as the English Land Transfer Act 1875. Ontario first enacted its Act in 1885 and amended it reflect an 1897 provision. In 1885, Ontario also included a version of the compensation provisions of the Transfer of Land Act 1866 of the Australian state of Victoria. The book is still a valuable work for the current law in Ontario, although the 1905 edition might have been better.English land laws underwent major reforms in 1925. The land titles system in the Land Transfer Acts 1875 and 1897 was the last version of the English land titles system before those reforms. The book is a valuable work on an English land titles system for laws free from those reforms. The English land titles system differs from the Australian Torrens system. Much of Canada uses a Torrens system.

Stan and Jan Berenstain introduced the first Berenstain Bear books in 1962 and the Bear family celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012! Here the charming and lovable Bear family is once again introducing children to the typical issues and questions that they face every day.

In The Berenstain Bears' Sleepy Time Book, little readers are introduced to a comforting nighttime routine. Brother, Sister, and Honey straighten up, take a bath, brush their teeth, read a bedtime story, and say their prayers before bidding their parents good night. The shorter story length and well-loved characters provide toddlers a perfect introduction to valuable life lessons and routines. Ages 2 to 5.

The Berenstain Bears' Sleepy Time Book, by Mike Berenstain

About the Author Mike Berenstain grew up watching his parents work together to write about and draw these lovable bears. Eventually he started drawing and writing about them too. Though Stan died in 2005 and Jan in 2012, Mike carries on his parents' love of creating Berenstain Bear stories from an area in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, which looks a lot like Bear Country.

Each state has its own unique qualities, regarding people, scenery, climate, landmarks, animals and so much more. The Smithsonian’s Young Explorers 50 States case has a puzzle, map and booklet full of very cool facts about each state. Parents, teachers and young readers will enjoy discovering their world. The fact book lists the states in alphabetical order. Young explores will learn that Arkansas has a diamond mine where anyone can find diamonds and keep them. Kansas has a salt mine that is 65 stories below Hutchinson. The state of Massachusetts is where the game of basketball was invented by a gym teacher. Nevada is home to the Hoover Dam and Oregon is home to the deepest lake, Crater Lake, in the United States. There is a ton of information packed onto these pages. Each state has a “Did You Know?” section, famous people list, state capital, bird, nickname and flower. Readers will also see a picture of each states flag. It is such fun to see them doing this activity together. There was a lot of fun dialogue about which states they have been to and which states they want to go to in the future. My son love geography and history, so he loved the puzzle and the fact book that came with it! This is great fun for all ages. The puzzle was very colorful, with state capitals starred and pictures of what each state is know for. Love this puzzle!5 stars

The poster helped her figure out which piece went where by acting as a photo guide for her. She also enjoyed looking at the state fact book that accompanies the activity kit. She was especially excited to have a visual of the country in anticipating of an upcoming cross country road trip. I plan to take the booklet on our vacation so that I can read a few facts aloud to her as we pass through each state. Smithsonian Young Explorers: 50 States, which I highly recommend for any young learner, will continue to grow with my daughter and son through the years. Note: I received a copy of this puzzle in exchange for my honest opinion.

Everything about who we are, how we came to be, and why we are here, issettled by faith. This book, written by a journalist who  interviewed people on both sides of theargument, supplies evidence for faith in God--and reveals forgeries designed to destroybelief God as Creator, such as the Piltdown man, missing evolutionary links that DNAproved aren't links, and a newer theory than Darwin's, punctuated equilibrium. The author taught her first class on the Bible and science at age 25.She alsostudied extensively on the reliability of scripture and evidence for theResurrection of Jesus, and took a college course in propaganda. She reveals her experience with the useof propaganda by secularists who spin the truth and attempt to brainwash Christians. You'll be surprised at this author's deduction of it all.

Review Religious as a belief not preaching at you!By P.S. Winn on June 13, 2015Format: Kindle Edition Verified PurchaseThis is an informative and interesting book. Whether you believe in Jesus and God or not, the reader can find a lot of ideas to ponder in this book. The author takes a look at all aspects of religion and how it affects each of us. For me, religion is a personal choice and this book will help you to look at some facts about humans and their relationship to religion. I think the author did a great job showing not only the reasons to believe, but how important belief is and how different we are as a whole when we have a good influence in our life with the morals that come with our beliefs in a higher power.

About the Author MEET ADA BROWNELL Ada Brownell blogs and writes with Stick-to-Your-Soul Encouragement. GET THE FACTS By Nellie Catlett I liked the message that is laced all through this book and that all come to the saving knowledge of grace and live for God. The research was excellent, considering the evidence of what is fact, faith and propaganda. I enjoyed the reading about the testimonies and Ada Brownell's own personal profile. It was enjoyable and thought provoking. Where will you spend eternity? Heaven or hell, there is no in between. Get the facts.

Kylie Bransford was all girl. She loved her long black hair that touched her lower back, and refused to cut it no matter how much her mother pleaded. She wore pink sneakers on the field when she cheered, her room was surrounded by mermaids, and her walls were decorated in pink and purple shades. She was "all" girl. Kylie loved to be on the go and in the know. The only thing that made not only her world, but her heart stop was Myles Russin. Myles was one of the cutest boys in the 8th grade. The night she invited him over to watch television was the night she knew for sure she’d receive her first kiss. Her tongue trailed the braces that shielded her teeth as Myles leaned forward with his eyes closed. With much disdain she pushed him away. Kylie had to come clean and reveal her secret. Kylie Bransford was biological born a boy, but lived as a girl. She just hoped Myles could see past her situation and like her for who she was and not what was in between her legs.

By Kindle Customer Even though this is a short story, it covered a serious topic and one I'm sure is more common then people realize. People need to stop being judgmental and accept people for who they are. (It's a hurt feeling to be teased because you are different.). Take the time to educate yourself about the things you don't understand as the character Myles did in this book. Its good to see a parent support their child the way that Kylie's mother did . Myles proved himself to be a awesome friend in the end.

Stuart Little (A Harper Trophy Book), by E. B. White

Amazon.com Review How terribly surprised the Little family must have been when their second child turned out to be a small mouse. Apparently familiar with the axiom that "when in New York City, anything can happen," the Littles accept young Stuart into their family unquestioningly--with the exception of Snowbell the cat who is unable to overcome his instinctive dislike for the little mouse. They build him a bed from a matchbox, and supply him with all of the accoutrements a young mouse could need. Mrs. Little even fashions him a suit, because baby clothes would obviously be unsuitable for such a sophisticated mouse. In return, Stuart helps his tall family with errant Ping-Pong balls that roll outside of their reach.

E. B. White takes Stuart on a hero's quest across the American countryside, introducing the mouse--and the reader--to a myriad of delightful characters. Little finds himself embroiled in one adventure after another from the excitement of racing sailboats to the unseen horrors of substitute teaching. This is a story of leaving home for the first time, of growing up, and ultimately of discovering oneself. At times, doesn't everyone feel like the sole mouse in a family--and a world--of extremely tall people? (Ages 9 to 12)

From Booklist Gr. 4-6. Readers will welcome this Spanish edition of a beloved tale, first published in 1945, about a two-inch-tall mouse with a big heart and a love for adventure. The fluid text resonates with the original wit and whimsy that marked White's clever intermingling of fantasy and real life. Miguez's joyous translation maintains the author's rhyming play on words by using appropriate substitutions--for example, gorrion, dragon, and raton for the English louse, grouse, and souse. A few Peninsular Spanish pronouns and conjugations (vuestras, podeis, sabreis) won't deter Spanish speakers from the Americas from enjoying Stuart Little's wonderful escapades. My 4 year old loves this book By Jackie Alan Giuliano, Ph.D. I was moved to write this review after reading some of the negative comments made about the book being boring, difficult to understand, or containing values that the parent did not want to pass on to the child. Stuart Little represents an important example of the some of the challenges of selecting reading materials for our children and tests us as parents in many ways. I didn't know how my boy would respond when I began reading it, since I knew it was one of those children's books that has been enjoyed by adults because of its adult humor, archaic language, few pictures. My 4 year old absolutely loves this book. We are on our second reading and a few nights ago, while he was laying in bed after our bedtime reading, he broke out laughing about how Stuart's brother, George, wanted to pour applesauce down the mousehole! The book was written in 1945, so many of the cultural references are dated, including how gender roles are perceived. But part of our responsibilities as parents is to expose our children to the evolution of thought in our culture, and that includes finding ways to explain how people's behavior has change over the years. A young child has already likely experienced many different behaviors in the children around them from daycare, preschool, or even playgroups. What better way to have an opportunity to prepare your child for the many different views he or she will encounter. But the message of Stuart Little is a powerful one that can be so useful to a child. Here is a 2-inch tall "person" who "looks like" a mouse, yet he is part of a human family. He has the most amazing obstacles in his life, yet he overcomes them with enthusiasm and joy. The use of actual sailing vocabulary is a wonderful choice by the author. What a great opportunity to expose our children to other language and to show them that specialized language exists for all fields of study, even hobbies. Doesn't even Winnie the Pooh have its own specialized vocabulary (smackrel, blustery day, etc.)?Stuart doesn't always make the right choices. This provides another great opportunity for discussion, regardless of the child's age. I am a parent who doesn't want to reinforce some of the stereotypes of our past that get in the way of people connecting, whether they be gender inequities or other issues. But it is important that my child get a framework for understanding how the way people have acted toward one another. In the last chapter of the book, Stuart meets a very self-assured girl who, by the way, he asks out on a date is an outdated, but respectful and wonderful way. He winds up being unable to continue connecting with her after his carefully imagined plans don't go as he dreamed. He is upset because things didn't go his way and couldn't get past his disappointment. What a great thing to discuss with a child. We also have to give our children credit for their intellectual abilities and imagination. I was quite surprised how my boy listens intently through the archaic language and vocabulary and finds the story.Stuart Little is a great book for that next step for the young child who has only had picture books read to him or her so far. It is a good beginning book for parents to learn how to introduce their child to the varied, challenging, sometimes confusing world out there in a very non-threatening, interesting way. Don't underestimate this book.

The story is one of growing up, and sadness, and yearning for something just out of reach. The brilliant E.B. White denies us a happy-Disney ending, avoids "closure". The story is just like life; it is a journey, not a package. The loose ends don't need to be cleared up with a sequel. Stuart has grown up and struck off on his own, the end. When I first read this story as a young boy, it gave me my first taste of melancholy. This should be the first "profound" book that a child reads, for it leaves you feeling sad, but hopeful.

Stuart must overcome large obstacles as a small being. One day Margalo, a bird, entered Stuart's life. They became instant friends. One day the family cat, Snowbell, and an alley cat came up with a plan to kill Margalo. Another bird overheard the plan and sent a note to Margalo. Margalo left and almost falls in love, but nothing cound keep Stuart from searching for Margalo. Stuart Little is a wonderful novel that appeals to children because of its curious blend of fantasy and reality. Children can relate to some of the obstacles Stuart encounters because of his size. This story helps children to learn to use determination in order to overcome obstacles they might face in life.
