Lawyers, You Can Revitalize Your Career Starting Today.

Whether you are in law school or a senior partner at an Am Law 100 firm, this book can help you revitalize your career to find the perfect job and create your ideal career.

Benjamin Barton, a law professor at the University of Tennessee, in his recent book on the legal profession, stated that only “44 percent of BigLaw lawyers report satisfaction with their careers.” According to a 2014 Gallup poll, only 32.4% of professionals in the United States were engaged with their jobs. And over 15% were actively disengaged.

There is a disconnect between lawyer’s passions and their work. Some

lawyers detest their jobs. Others tolerate their work for the paycheck. Either way, these lawyers are detached and dissatisfied with their jobs. They desire something deeper and more meaningful in their work and career.

This book can help you revitalize your career and achieve success, prosperity, and personal fulfillment. Success, prosperity, and personal fulfillment as you, and only you, define those terms.

The Professional Prosperity For Lawyers System

Through the career revitalization system in this book, you will use your strengths to achieve goals reflecting your personal vision of an ideal career. You will explore jobs aligned with who you are and create a career path you have only dreamed of pursuing.

Your career revitalization is based on two central premises.

First, lawyers must view their career as a business. Whether you are a lawyer at the largest law firm in the world or are a sole practitioner, you are a business. Your career should be run like a business.

Second, run your business as an entrepreneur if you want to be successful, prosperous, and personally fulfilled.

If you want to realize your dreams of a perfect job and ideal career, the career revitalization process provides the framework. Use the framework, follow the process, and take the actions. You will get your perfect job and create your ideal career. A career giving you the freedom to do the work you what you want to do. When you want to do it. And, with the people you want to do it with.

Imagine getting up in the morning looking forward to your day. Being rested and full of energy. Controlling your schedule. Working on projects that interest and excite you. Collaborating with people you like and respect. Taking time off to spend with family and friends. Having time for leisure activities or working on projects outside your job.

This career revitalization system is grounded in the practices, processes and actions of many lawyers who are successful, prosperous and personally fulfilled. You will live your dreams by implementing the career revitalization process.

Why I Can Help You Revitalize Your Career

I had a successful legal career, developed a book of business over $3.5 million, was an equity partner at two Am Law 100 firms, was an in-house counsel at a publicly traded investment bank, went from in-house counsel to a law firm partner and left the law on several occasions.

Most importantly, I know how you can achieve success, prosperity and personal fulfillment, and I have a strong desire to help you discover the path to your ideal career and life.

I also endured decades of boredom and stress as a practicing lawyer. I disliked much of my work and was frequently disengagement from it. Substance abuse, bouts of depression, divorce, and financial issues are part of my career story. And, consideration of suicide on more than one occasion. I could not enjoy the fruits of my career “success” story.

I am now on a mission. A mission to help you create an epic career of success, prosperity and personal fulfillment.

Now is the time to take action. Start today by buying and reading this book.

Best Ebook PDF The Epistle on Legal Theory: A Translation of Al-Shafii's Risalah (Library of Arabic Literature), by Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafii

The Epistle on Legal Theory is the oldest surviving Arabic work on Islamic legal theory and the foundational document of Islamic jurisprudence. Its author, Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi?i (d. 204 H/820 AD), was the eponym of the Shafi?i school of legal thought, one of the four rites in Sunni Islam. This fascinating work offers the first systematic treatment in Arabic of key issues in Islamic legal thought. These include a survey of the importance of Arabic as the language of revelation, principles of textual interpretation to be applied to the Qur?an and prophetic Traditions, techniques for harmonizing apparently contradictory precedents, legal epistemology, rules of inference, and discussions of when legal interpretation is required. The author illustrates his theoretical claims with numerous examples drawn from nearly all areas of Islamic law, including ritual law, commercial law, tort law, and criminal law. The text thus provides an important window into both Islamic law and legal thought in particular and early Islamic intellectual history in general .   This new translation by a leading scholar of Shafi?i and his thought makes available in lucid, modern English one of the earliest complete works on Islamic law—one that is centrally important for the formation of Islamic legal thought and the Islamic legal tradition.

"Veggies, veggies, veggies. I hate veggies! I didn't want to eat them, so I started to think of ways out of it. Then I remembered that once when I was sick, my mom let me finish dinner without eating my peas. Maybe it would work again, even though I wasn't really sick?!" Kyle is four and a half years old. He just discovered that he has a new power, which is lying. While his new power is fantastic for getting him out of trouble, it does sometimes come with consequences.

Another Great Book by Dan Thompson By Elizabeth Guizzetti I read and enjoyed Dan Thompson’s novel, Here Lies Love, so I was looking forward to the release of The Black Petal. It did not disappoint. While I tend to read adult fiction, this novel was a real treat. Without spoilers, It follows a teen from current day, Jack, and a Victorian assassin, Blake who find themselves transported to a fantastical world. Thompson deftly developed both characters and their timelines. The switching from the Victorian era to the present to fantasy is easy to follow.Thompson loves rich description and uses it well in this epic fantasy. In fact, though early drafts of this book apparently was originally written before Here Lies Love, the writing feels more solid as if Thompson is coming into his style.I enjoyed it immensely.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. fab read By jane yates The Black Petal by Dan ThompsonThis book blew my socks off it was so fabulous. I am a slow reader, but could not read it fast enough in the end as it was so very exciting, especially the battle scenes. Dan has his own unique and totally fresh way of telling a story. You can tell from reading it that every detail from the armoury, to the horses, to the types of weapons, all have been thoroughly researched and thought about, so the account of the battle is so totally believable.I loved that even though the two main characters were men – Blake and Jack – most of the characters were woman and he describes them beautifully, even the ugly oracle. I love all the mythical creatures, and particularly liked Dan’s description of the phoenix bird. The Black Petal leads you into exploring the lives of two young men who share the same soul. They are both from planet Earth, but from different time frames and have completely different personalities. Jack is an average teenager who starts off unsure of himself, but who’s character grows throughout the story. Blake is a ruthless professional Victorian assassin, very sure of himself, but who’s personality softens after an incident where a woman saves his life. Both get drawn into a parallel universe by a three legged dog, and then meet not only meet each other but all manner of tests and adventures. This is a jolly exciting read and so very well written. No one I have ever read describes the landscape and the sky as poetically as Dan does. He invents a world that you feel you know or have been to as it’s described so beautifully and accurately. No one is able to transport you to the deepest cave or the highest palace in the sky as Dan does. He describes the fear that coursed through Blake’s body as he fearfully dared to look down whilst riding a flying horse into the sky. No one can touch on the feelings of tenderness in the way Dan did between Jack and his love Lucia. Also the cover of this book is stunning and the quality of print on cream paper is excellent. If you only buy one paperback this year, I would highly recommend that you buy The Black Petal; it’s a modern classic that you will be able to enjoy time and time again.

Read Ebook The Hitch-hiker's Guide Through the Churches: A Christian's true-life experiences in today's churches, by David Manalan

This book is a true-life story of one man’s ‘spiritual journey’ through the churches that he associated with prior to the year 2000. His journey represents a 10-year period in which he associated with people in more than 20 different churches in the Anglican, Apostolic-Nazarene, Baptist, Brethren, Charismatic (AOG), Churches of Christ, Methodist, Pentecostal, Presbyterian, and Uniting Churches in Australia. His journey revealed to him that in Acts 20, the Apostle Paul warned his people that "…after his departing, grievous wolves would enter in among the churches and would not spare the flock from attack”. He also warned that false Christians would arise, speaking perverse things that contradicted scripture for the purpose of drawing away disciples after themselves. He therefore urged them to watch and remember that by the space of three years he ceased not to warn every one (night and day with tears) about the degrees of apostasy the churches would arrive at after his death. In this aspect of his journey, the author has proven the words of Paul to be entirely accurate, and this book documents the many encounters he had with those who have fulfilled Paul’s words. The author’s initial desire on his journey was to locate God’s people (the Salt of the Earth; the Light on the Hill; the Wheat; and those Sheep who hear Jesus’ voice) and to join with them in the spreading of the Gospel. Instead of finding God’s people, his search uncovered mostly the Tares and Grievous Wolves in the churches. He determined this from the heresies he encountered, such as the ‘Once Saved, Always Saved’ doctrine, together with the rejection and persecution he suffered from those in leadership and from others in the congregations he attended. His search also revealed Biblically-banned practices being promoted in some churches such as Necromancy (communication with the dead) and the Pro-abortion agenda – both of which demonstrate the level of apostasy today’s ‘End-time Church' has degenerated into. After his wife of 20-years and two children abandoned the author before his journey commenced, he met and married his second Christian wife some 2-years later – a decision that evolved into a disaster. The circumstantial evidence he presents in this book indicates that the witchcraft operating in the church that his second wife attended was what robbed him of his house, together with many of his possessions. It was during this time of his life that he also had to contend with the Biblical aspects of whether divorce and remarriage were acceptable to God – which some readers may find an interesting topic to consider. Throughout his journey, the author used his ‘spiritual map’ (the King James Bible) together with his ‘personal guide’ (the Holy Spirit) to help him ‘navigate’ his way through the churches to where he is today. He has devised a Biblically-based illustration that depicts what the spiritual structure of Christ’s Church should represent. This diagram can also be used by the reader to help determine if the church they attend has been established according to this model. The author reveals a range of heresies and practices that enable the reader to undertake a self-analysis of their own beliefs. David Manalan

He gets involved with the Pastors, the parish members, and the activities of each church. He is always seeking fellowship, opportunities to share Christ through his rather vast and deep knowledge of the scriptures. He seems able to pull up scripture in a moment’s notice. He may think in scripture, or it runs in his blood; I can’t tell. He has on his mind what many have that are a truly born again Christians. How do I find a good church where I can fellowship, grow spiritually and find like minded people? He has come out of a painful divorce and looking for understanding and healing amongst God’s people. There are times I could not put this book down. The author is an excellent writer, very transparent and expresses himself well as he shares his concerns with leadership and members his difficulties; and his looking towards God to see him through it all. His turmoil only deepens as he finds anti-biblical doctrine, heresies and major flaws in their teaching, necromancy and extreme lack of knowledge of scripture or rejection of scripture. He encountered more problems than I have put down here. Then he becomes rejected as he tries to share with the leadership their errors. Their response is shocking and the author in time must leave to again seek another church. The story gets worse in these churches. A woman and good friend of the pastor’s wife gets involved with this interesting knowledgeable committed Christian and his world is shaken up again. Incredible! The author keeps notes in his honest attempt to “walk-the-walk” under the leadership of the Pastor, but cannot accept the ignorance of the teachings and also the failure of the members to see what is going on in a major Christian church. We journey through some 20 churches with this author and it was exhausting at times but exciting to read, thinking how will he handle his next encounter? There is a lot to like about this author, as he has a soft heart, a hunger and thirst for God and a gift of understanding the scriptures, quick to spot error, flaws, and things that are an abomination to God. Also, he outlines the doctrine of each church in a simple chart, quickly noting Biblical errors. I learned many new verses such as some of the errors in the SDA churches. There is a lot to learn from this unique book. His gift in the body of Christ may be a correction ministry. How many of the Prophets of old were rejected and thrown out of town when they brought forth God’s word. Somehow, I see David Manalan as being used by God to confront church leadership and members about the seriousness of being led by the Spirit and of honoring God’s Word. His book is quite a journey, and one is privileged to read an account from someone who has really put his heart and soul into this message that he wants to share with God’s people. It was 10 years in the making.

Each page depicts a young child doing things with their grandpa.First page text is "Morning reading time" it then shows grandpa in a chair reading a paper with a boy on the floor at his feet reading too.

Each page shows a child with their unique grandfather, creating a special memory with each other. The illustrator is definitely someone to watch for. Each picture is mesmerizing to me because there is something reminiscent and real in the pictures. Many seem to capture some subtle familiar movement or expression. Let's see if I can explain...The look between a girl and her grandfather as they fish is alive with that special gleam of glee. The girl playing soccer with her grandfather as he throws himself into the challenge -- you can feel the strength of his arms as he hunches over and prepares to block. One of side of his mouth and eyebrow are raised in a barely perceptible playful challenge.A boy and his grandfather lean into the fierce wind as they joyfully fly a kite. Their coats whip around them unnoticed by the pair as they are enraptured with the moment. The hammock slowly sways as the girl curls up napping on her grandfather as he exults in the relaxing perfect moment.A proud grandfather with wizened eyes watches his granddaughter contemplate her next chess move, while she takes a moment to steal a glance up at him through her eyelashes. The moment of impact when a grandson meets his grandfather in the doorway exploding full force before he's had a moment to put anything down. His face radiant with the joy of so much love.Grandfather and grandson take a moment to survey their hard work nearly completing clearing the walkway of snow. You know that moment where you lean back to stretch your back and rest with a satisfied smile? Illustrator nailed it.A hand straining to reach for the proffered tool while grandfather is under the car, with little one looking on in fascination. There were others, but those are my favorites. A definite buy for the grandparents to read to your kids.Thank you Netgalley and Capstone Young Readers/Picture Window Books for a free digital copy in exchange for an honest review. You can follow my book reviews on Goodreads.com at https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/1463934-aimee-just-one-more-page

The following review is my own and will not be affected by this.My son and I decided to read Time together for our bedtime story the other night. He seemed to really enjoy it, it takes him a while to sit through an entire bedtime story but Time Together-Me & Grandpa really caught his attention and I would have to say it was because the illustrations were gorgeous. The book is illustrated by Pascal Campion. The illustrations like I said are gorgeous. The book has few words but I felt like the illustrations could have told the story on its own. The people in the illustration looked genuinely happy to be in each other's company. My son would often tell me what the people in the books were doing before I had read the story. I thought it was neat to see him so engaged in the book. What I really liked about the book was its message. The importance of spending time with your grandparents rather it be simply reading next to each other or lay down next to each other, you are spending time with one another. I think that is a really important message. The story was very simple but carried a great message of quality time. The illustrations were great and helped really bring the story together.Like I said, I usually struggle to get my son to sit still through an entire bedtime story but this book he sat threw and even made up his own story based on the illustrations. We would definitely recommend!

When a visit from Mandy’s cousin turns out to be more frustrating than fun, the girls discover that they just might cook up a solution in the kitchen in this sweet and spirited story.Mandy Berr is super excited that her favorite cousin in the whole world, Paige, is coming to visit. After all, Mandy is usually stuck at home with the twins and annoying little brother, Timmy, so the chance for some fun girl time is definitely worthy of many “wahoos!” But when Paige arrives, she is not the fun cousin that Mandy remembers. To start, Paige wants to call her “Manda,” with no “y.” She no longer likes Rainbow Sparkle, their favorite TV show. She doesn’t want to bounce on the bed or play dress-up. And, in the ultimate betrayal, Paige actually likes hanging out with the twins and Timmy. Mandy does not like these changes one bit. To try and help bring the girls together, their grandma suggests the girls make some recipes out of a special cookbook—if they can work together, she will take them to a carnival at the end of the week. But having two bosses in the kitchen isn’t working out, and it looks like Mandy's visit with Paige is about to go up in smoke. Can the two cousins clear the air and whip up a fancy meal for the family?

CHAPTER 1

Glue Stick Stickup

IT IS NOT MY FAULT that there is chocolate pudding in Timmy’s hair. Mom says that it is my fault, of course. She thinks that just because I pulled the pudding cup away from Timmy, and it squirted on his face when I squeezed it, that this whole chocolate pudding thing is my problem. But I promise that it is not. “You said I cannot eat pudding for breakfast,” I tell Mom, still holding the almost-empty pudding cup in my hand. She lifts Timmy onto the counter to sit and begins running a wet paper towel down his bangs. “You can’t,” Mom answers. “But Timmy was,” I point out. “And that is not allowed.” “You’re right, that’s not allowed,” Mom says. “But you had no business grabbing the cup away from him like that. You should’ve just told me.” “Then you would have called me a tattletale,” I tell her, which I think is a pretty good point. Mom sighs an enormous gust of breath—so enormous that the tippy-top of Timmy’s hair blows a little from her nose wind. “Timmy should not have been eating pudding for breakfast—do you hear that, Timmy?” Mom lifts his chin up to face her, and he nods his head, even though he is still licking chocolate from his lips. “But, Mandy, you did not have to intervene. Next time—and there better not be a next time, Timmy—just come get me.” “So I should tattletale.” “Mandy,” Mom says with a warning in her voice. “Enough.” When Mom’s back is turned, I stick my longest finger inside the pudding cup and swoop up the last bite. Then I drop the cup onto the counter, because I am not cleaning up a three-year-old’s trash. No way! “Mandy eat pudding,” I hear Timmy call then, and I whirl around on my heel to face him. He is pointing at me as Mom wrings his hair into wet tangles. “Mandy eat pudding too. I saw.” “Worry about yourself, Timmy,” Mom says. “And, Mandy, throw that pudding cup away for me, please.” I pick the cup back up in my hand and stomp toward the trash can, and I wiggle my finger through the pudding one more time, just to swipe up the last of it, before I toss it in the garbage. “You’re welcome, Timmy,” I call, and he does not even say thank you for throwing out his trash, which I think is rude. I am pretty sure that if Timmy had to throw out my trash after I ate pudding for breakfast, I would have had to say thank you, so I stick my tongue out at him. “Okay, I think it’s all out now,” Mom says, and she grunts as she hoists Timmy off the counter. But I think she should have left the pudding in his hair, because then at least the front of it would have been brown like mine. Not that I would like to look like Timmy, but I also do not like that he gets to have blond hair and I do not. At least the pudding would have made things even. “You’re going to be late for your bus, Mand,” Mom says as she rinses her hands off in the sink. “Mandy,” I correct her. “I know your name, silly,” Mom says. “Mand is just short for Mandy. It’s affectionate.” “I do not like it,” I tell her. “I thought you didn’t like Amanda.” “I do not like that, either,” I say. “I like Mandy. With a y. The y is the best part.” “You have a lot of rules, you know that?” Mom says, and she kisses the top of my head. “Skedaddle. Your bus will be here in two minutes. Remember your jacket. And be careful of the twins on your way out, please.” I trot out of the kitchen and Timmy calls “Bye, Mandy!” after me, but I do not answer him. The twins are lying on the living room carpet like blobs, looking at mobiles. I hold my nose as I step over them, because one of them always seems to stink like a dirty diaper. I grab my book bag and open the front door before I remember. “When is Paige coming?” I call to Mom. “Tonight,” she yells back. “But what time?” Paige is my favorite cousin in the whole world, and I haven’t seen her since last Christmas, which I think is way too long. “After dinner. Grandmom is going to pick her up at Uncle Rich’s house this afternoon,” Mom tells me. “And she is going to sleep in my room, right?” I ask. “Like a slumber party?” “That’s the plan,” Mom answers. “Wahoo!” I open the front door all the way and then slam it behind me, dragging my book bag along the ground as I gallop like a pony toward the bus stop. Because if there is one thing that puts me in an excellent mood, it is Paige, because Paige is fabulous. That is her favorite word—“fabulous”—which is perfect because that is exactly what she is. Paige looks like a princess with very wavy hair and real pierced ears, and her lips are so pink that she always looks like she is wearing lipstick, even though she is not. Plus, Paige does not have any brothers or sisters, which is what I would like to have, except that sometimes I like to pretend that Paige is my sister. She would be a much better sister to have than the twin, because even though Paige is already ten years old, she never cares that I am only eight. Because I am her favorite cousin too, just like she is mine. And favorite cousins are absolutely the best kind to have visit you. *  *  * “Psst.” I lean against my desk and hiss at Dennis. “Psst, Freckle Face.” I tap on the edge of his desk, which is now right next to mine. This is Mrs. Spangle’s way of making sure that Dennis and I get along more than we argue with each other. I do not think this plan is working out so well. “What?” Dennis runs his hand over the top of his Mohawk. We are supposed to be creating maps of our neighborhoods with construction paper, but Dennis doesn’t seem to be doing much more than petting his own hair. Though I have always wondered what the top of a Mohawk would feel like, if I am being honest. “Are you done?” I point to his paper, which looks even worse than the artwork Timmy makes in preschool. “Yeah.” “Can I use your glue stick?” I whisper. “Mine ran out.” I screw up the bottom of the stick all the way so Dennis can see that it’s empty. “No.” “Why?” “Because I said so, Polka Dot,” Dennis says. “But it’s right there.” I point to his glue stick, which is lying next to scraps of multicolored construction paper. “You didn’t even put the cap on. It’s going to dry up if you don’t let me use it.” “Too bad for you,” Dennis says, and he thumps his head on his desk and pretends to nap. I look toward Mrs. Spangle, and she has her own head buried in her bottom desk drawer, digging through her handbag. I peer over the side of Dennis’s desk until I can see his face, and he has his eyes closed, ignoring me. So I reach very slowly around his head, and I lift his glue stick with the very tips of my fingers. Careful not to create any breeze near his Mohawk, I pull my arm back as gently as possible. Success! I pump a silent fist in the air, still clutching Dennis’s glue stick, and that’s when I see Natalie staring at me. I pull my other hand across my mouth and then stretch my lips tight, as if I had just zipped them closed, and Natalie nods her head to show she understands that she shouldn’t say one thing. Natalie is almost like a real friend ever since she helped me hide Mom’s red lipstick on Picture Day. Not like a best friend, like Anya is, but she is okay sometimes. I use Dennis’s glue stick to finish putting together my map, and I think about returning it to his desktop before he notices. But Dennis didn’t even let me use his glue stick in the first place, so I don’t think he deserves to have it back, at least not yet. I grab the cap from where it is resting just above his Mohawk, place it on the stick, and put it in my own desk. Then I place my empty stick by Dennis’s head. “I like how nicely you’ve all been working on your maps,” Mrs. Spangle says as she stands. “Anything you don’t have completed can be wrapped up after recess—you’ll all have five minutes to finish. Right now, though, let me see whose group is ready to line up for lunch.” I fold my hands neatly on my desk and sit up super-duper straight, just like Natalie always does. Dennis still has his head resting on his desk, and he is going to ruin it for our whole team. “Psst, Freckle Face.” I try to kick him under our desks, but I can’t reach. “Wake up.” “I am up,” Dennis says, but he still does not lift his head, which means Mrs. Spangle is never going to call us to line up first. I stop sitting super-duper straight, since Dennis is wrecking it for our whole group anyway, and instead, I rustle through my desk until I find my sticker book. Anya and I, and sometimes Natalie, have been collecting stickers and trading them, but mine are some of the prettiest, I think. My favorite kinds of stickers are filled with gel, and when you press them, the gel spreads out and looks glittery. I even traded most of my Rainbow Sparkle stickers for Anya’s gel ones, because that is how much I love them. “Mandy and Dennis, I’ll wait,” Mrs. Spangle says, so I place my sticker book on my lap and fold my hands again on top of my desk. Dennis places his chin on his hands but still doesn’t lift his head. “Sit up!” I whisper-yell at him, and he does, but not even super-duper straight like he is supposed to. “Okay, Mandy’s group,” Mrs. Spangle finally announces. “You can grab your things from the cubbies and get in line.” I stand and hold my sticker book up in Anya’s direction to make sure she has hers too, and she nods at me. Then I scramble to grab my lunch box and get in line as quickly as I can so I won’t be all the way in the back, because Dennis always likes to be the caboose. And there is no way I want Dennis to ruin my appetite today. *  *  * “Why’d you steal Dennis’s glue stick?” Natalie asks me when we reach our table in the cafeteria. “I didn’t steal it, I took it,” I explain. “Isn’t that the same thing?” I think about this for one second. “No, because if I stole it, I can never give it back, like when Dennis stole my gummy bears and ate them all. If I took it, I can give it back. I just don’t want to yet.” Natalie nods her head like this makes sense, and I am a very good explainer, I think. I whip my sticker book onto the table and open to the center page, which has all of my favorite gel stickers in a row. “Aren’t they beautiful?” I ask. “They are,” Natalie agrees. “My mom said she would take me to the teacher store and look for more stickers this weekend.” Teacher stores are one of the best places for getting stickers, because teachers like to buy them almost as much as we do. I have never been to a teacher store, even though I have wanted to go to one my whole entire life. Mom says we do not have to go there because no one in our house is a teacher, but Mom doesn’t understand important things like sticker collecting. “I wonder if Paige has any stickers she would trade,” I begin. “Did I tell you she is coming tonight?” “Only like a thousand times,” Anya answers. “I know, you’re excited.” “Who’s Paige?” Natalie asks. “Her cousin,” Anya answers for me. “Her favorite cousin.” She drags out the word “favorite” and wiggles her head back and forth as she says it. “Why is she your favorite?” Natalie asks. “Because she is fabulous. That is Paige’s favorite word, you know—‘fabulous.’ And that is what she is,” I tell her. “But what makes her so fabulous?” Natalie asks. “She has wavy hair that looks just like a yellow ocean,” I explain. “And she wears boots with little heels that click-clack on the floor. And she has more Rainbow Sparkle stuff than anyone in the universe, and she always draws a heart in her name above the i. Oh, and she does not have any brothers or sisters, and that is what I want to have.” “You mean that’s what you don’t want to have?” Natalie asks, and sometimes I wish Natalie would stop listening so much to everything I say, so I sigh an enormous breath at her. “You know what I mean,” I tell her. “Or maybe I would take Paige as my sister. That would be good too.” “Why is she visiting?” Natalie asks. “Her school is on vacation,” I explain. “She will be here for one whole week.” “You’re lucky to have a cousin your age,” Anya tells me. “All of my cousins are very old. Like, teenagers.” And I nod because I agree that I am lucky. But if I could, I would definitely trade in Timmy and the twins to have Paige as my sister. Then I would be the luckiest girl of all.

Allison Gutknecht has one of the best chapter book writers I've ever read By Stephanie Faris Allison Gutknecht has one of the best chapter book writers I've ever read. She captures the voice of an eight-year-old girl perfectly. Pizza Is the Best Breakfast: (And Other Lessons I've Learned) is every bit as awesome as the other books in the series but if you haven't read the others, I recommend you start with Don't Wear Polka-Dot Underwear with White Pants: (And Other Lessons I've Learned) and read all of them in order. You'll love Mandy and all her misadventures, I promise!

At first there was a problem and Mandy tried to make Paige jealous but that didn't get them anywhere. Then they had to use teamwork to go to something they both wanted. I liked that they had to use teamwork to get what they wanted. I liked that cousins can be friends and work together. I recommend this book to any kids who love a good story and love learning skills in a different way.

Roger is Reading a Book, by Koen Van Biesen

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—In this enchanting Belgian import, bespectacled Roger, clad in a vest, a bow-tie, and a tweed cap, settles down to enjoy a book in peace and quiet. His reverie is repeatedly interrupted by Emily, an energetic youngster next door with loud hobbies—singing, drumming, juggling, and even boxing. With each disturbance, an increasingly irritated Roger knocks louder and louder on the wall, until in utter exasperation, he brings Emily a gift—a book of her own. When they both settle down to read, the story reaches its true crescendo—Roger's long-suffering dog demands to be taken for a walk, and Roger and Emily oblige. Van Biesen's mixed-media illustrations are somewhat reminiscent of the work of Chris Raschka and Vladimir Radunksy, but have a whimsical style of their own. Ingenious use of the book's gutter as the dividing wall between the apartments, clever changes in typography to signal sound volume, and the hilarious visual elements, such as the plight of Roger's basset hound, are but a few examples of Van Biesen's sophisticated use of visual effects. VERDICT This winsome story deserves a place in most collections.—Yelena Alekseyeva-Popova, formerly at Chappaqua Library, NY

Review Publishers Weekly "Van Biesen’s fluid line, witty typography, and bits of photographic collage give this story an abundance of style. . . . The comic escalation of Emily’s noisy pursuits, combined with delightfully unexpected details . . . add up to a beautifully crafted piece of work."Booklist "A charming story made even more so by the original, beautiful design."100 Scope Notes "The text is wonderfully efficient — simple and straightforward, with keen use of repetition. I've been reading it to Kindergarten classes recently and can attest to the book's read-aloud effectiveness. It has humor, which always plays well (including the final punchline of Roger's dachshund taking a bathroom break on a city lamppost), and a nice mix of quiet and loud moments which making for dynamic reading. . . . The mixed-media illustrations bring a playful tone to the story, with bright colors on ample white space. . . . Unique yet exceedingly inclusive, Roger is Reading a Book will make a delightful addition to your picture book collection."Jen Robinson's Book Page "An enjoyable romp."Through the Looking Glass Children's Book Reviews "This wonderfully clever book will delight young readers and will certainly resonate with their grownups who are probably very familiar with Roger's predicament. With a minimal text and lots of sound words, this is the kind of book young children will enjoy looking through on their own."Booklist "A charming story made even more so by the original, beautiful design."The Horn Book Magazine  “Visually stimulating, this well-designed package of noises, books, and human nature is like an offbeat piece of chamber music.”  Spirituality & Practice  “All book readers – young and old alike – will appreciate this tale and its universal messages about the lack of silence, noise, and handling conflict with spiritual insight.”

By Deborah Meservey I think one of the most under-appreciated gifts a children’s author can give to the world is a limited vocabulary story that doesn’t feel like one. I’d like to add Roger is Reading a Book to that list.In this story, Roger - in one room on the right side of the book’s gutter, is trying to read - while Emily, on the left side of the gutter, is very busy with noisy activities (singing, drumming, boxing, etc). Each time the noise gets to Roger, he knocks on her wall (the book’s gutter) to get her to stop. Eventually, Roger has a brilliant idea - he brings Emily a book of her own - but after they become lost in their reading, Roger’s baying basset hound interrupts them both.Van Biesen’s clever, spare illustration incorporates collage and line drawing in a way that conveys plenty of movement and emotion, and these alone could tell the story. But thankfully the words are there to give beginning readers or readers-aloud what they need to further decipher or share this delightful tale.Use this enjoyable picture book to introduce young readers to the idea that some need a quiet environment to appreciate a good book.

My 3 and 5 year old both love it and are able to recite parts of it because of it's beautiful simplicity. It's fun to read and the mixed media illustrations are just gorgeous.

On the 100th anniversary of the publishing of the special theory of relativity, this National Geographic photobiography chronicles the life of one of the most brilliant scientists who ever lived. Through compelling text and stirring archival photographs, the author recounts Einstein's life from his privileged childhood in Austria through the crucial years during World War II, and his death 50 years ago in Princeton, New Jersey. Young readers learn about Einstein's remarkable theories that still influence technologies of today and discover the causes he passionately supported such as disarmament and civil liberties.

Genius: A Photobiography of Albert Einstein (Photobiographies), by Marfe Ferguson Delano

From School Library Journal Starred Review. Grade 5-8–While the myriad photographs are fascinating, the bigger draw here is the wonderfully simple explanations of some of Einstein's theories. For example, in clarifying the physicist's quantum theory of light, Delano says, "Simply put, Einstein showed that photons in the light beam knock the electrons out of metal." And, to make the concept of spacetime easier to understand, she asks readers to contemplate spacetime as a trampoline with a bowling ball resting on it. This visual perception helps to make the theory understandable for all students. The black-and-white and sepia photographs follow Einstein from boyhood to old age and show him in a variety of settings: at the blackboard, delivering a speech, taking the oath of U.S. citizenship, in his Princeton home with children who survived the Holocaust, and so on. Many have appeared elsewhere. Cartoon illustrations add to the clarity of the very readable text. Personal thoughts and feelings abound. To make Einstein human to the audience, his mistakes are mentioned, as well as his celebrity. Complete quote sources are appended. An introduction by Evelyn Einstein, the scientist's granddaughter, is included. This entertaining effort displays clarity and intelligence. It has plenty of information for reports and is also a good choice for browsing.–Anne Chapman Callaghan, Racine Public Library, WI Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist *Starred Review* Gr. 5-8. There are plenty of books about Einstein, but this one combines a solid text with a particularly attractive format. Delano moves briskly through Einstein's life, clearing up misconceptions along the way (he was not a bad student as some have claimed). She does not delve too deeply into his relationships or motives, but she brings him to life so that readers come to care about Einstein as a person, not simply see him as a genius. Delano offers just enough information about Einstein's theories to give a sense of his work, keeping in mind that his ideas go over the heads of most people. What is particularly impressive, however, is the format. Oversize and filled with well-selected photographs, the book is very handsome. Many of the photos and quotes are placed against aged-looking paper, with Einstein's writings and formulas just visible on its surface. The background color meshes perfectly with the sepia tone of many of the photos. Quotes are sourced, and appended material includes a chronology and list of resources. Because this year marks the 100th anniversary of the theory of relativity, we'll see many books about Einstein. This one is sure to be among the best. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Genius By Heldmanteam Genius, was an excellent biography of Albert Einstein, talking all about his life. Starting from when he was born, the book takes the reader on a journey, through his schooling, his research, coming to America, all the way till his death. The book also explains his major scientific discoveries, like his theory of relativity winning him the Nobel Prize, and the unified field theory he tried to figure out. This book has a lot of information, but is a very quick read. Overall, it is a great book.

Genius: A photobiography of Albert Einstein By Metta Ann Lieb I ordered this book for my mentally challenged son, hoping it would be simple enough for him to grasp, and it fulfilled my hopes very well. It's simple, yet comprehensive, and the photographs are superb.

I picked it up and started to read, and began to giggle, out loud. I felt that I was being too loud, so I closed the book and put it down until I felt I was under control again. I then picked it up to read, but burst into giggles again. This happened several times. I wanted to buy the book in the store but it was kind of beat up, so I ordered from Amazon. I gave this book to my friend for her baby shower, and it was the absolute hit of the party! You know how everyone passes the presents around, "Oh, how nice, ANOTHER tube of Desitin!" "Oh, of COURSE she can use another frilly baby headband!" and no one really looks at them or cares? Well this book took about an hour to make it around the circle; its progress was punctuated with shrieks of laughter. We even called her husband in and he read it and totally cracked up. My friend says she is actually going to use the spinner on the front of the book.I think my favorite parts of the book are the "Testing Baby's Bottle", "Introducing Baby to Pets", and "Bonding With Baby", but to be honest, they are all hilarious. I read the book about 10 times before I gave it to her and I still giggled each time. I don't have any babies, but I think I might just buy this for myself for laughs. Fantastic shower gift.

It provided the laughter that we desperately needed after a week without sleep. Even after the fifth time through, I still laugh out loud at most pages. It's especially fun to share with friends and family when they come over, and now I know not to wake the baby with an air horn. This book is a perfect gift for new parents.

I can't think of a better gift for someone who is about to have a baby. Sure, you could buy them a Dr. Spock book, a car seat, diapers, or some other equally boring gift, but this ten dollar treat will have them actually remembering who you are! Of course, it also might end your friendship if you are implying in a not-so-subtle manner that you question their parenting skills and believe their baby is in imminent danger. But even if they do never speak to you again, at least you will always be remembered for this wonderful book.
