She is truly a woman who walks the walk. I love her insight in 10 Ways to Make Decisions with God. As an business owner with christian values. I have found myself drawn to watching her find success in her life. I believe in life we get out of it what we put into it. I have worked very hard in the last year to clear some blocks that I feel have kept me from having success in my business. Although I am a god loving person, I don't feel I fully put God into that equation. Whether with my personal life or business co-creating my success in all areas of my life has been so much better when I TRULY put him at the foundation of everything I do. One of my favorite sections of this book was something Kelly had shared in a mutual forum of writing letters to God. What a profound way of communication with our loving Heavenly Father. God is WAITING to help us in our decisions and to help us manifest our righteous desires in our lives. What better way to get clarity in our life decisions than to get to know him by writing letters to God and receiving letters back from him. These 10 ways will help you get answers and clarity to life's big and small decisions and help you get closer to God while doing so. I highly recommend reading both of her e-books. Again, she practices what she preaches. She is a true example of faith.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Inspired and Insightful! By C. Warnick I loved Kelly's first e-book and was thrilled to have the chance to read her second. I am very pleased (and impressed) to say that it surpasses 10 Ways to Create Abundance with God. Kelly offers beautiful, concise insights, advice and ways to not only involve God in your life so you can make the best decisions possible, but I've found that as I've applied the principles taught my relationship with God has grown tremendously. My favorite section is the one about writing letters to God. It's such a sweet and lovely way to communicate with our Father in Heaven! Thank you for such an inspired, insightful work, Kelly!

Nine-year-old Tamika Jordan dreads visiting her grandmother at the nursing home. Momma Lou has Alzheimer's and always forgets who Tamika is. After her father shows her Momma Lou's scrapbooks, Tamika comes up with an idea to jog Momma Lou's memory. Tamika is successful in reaching her grandmother one day when Momma Lou recognizes a newspaper clipping of a Civil Rights demonstration and leads everybody in a celebration of song. Linda Jacobs Altman tells a moving story of intergenerational love and hope, while Larry Johnson's evocative paintings bring this memorable story to life. This a book to be shared by the whole family. Altman learned about the effects of Alzheimer s when her mother was stricken with the disease. While it was a tragic experience, she learned from her mother the power of the human spirit.

Singing with Momma Lou, by Linda Jacobs Altman

From Publishers Weekly "I still don't see why we have to do this every week," says nine-year-old Tamika Louella Jordan about Sunday visits to the nursing home. "Half the time Momma Lou doesn't even know who we are." In Singing with Momma Lou by Linda Jacobs Altman, illus. by Larry Johnson, Tamika searches for a way to help her grandmother, who suffers from Alzheimer's, access her memories. Back matter includes information about the disease and provides the names of three related organizations. Ages 6-10.Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal Grade 2-5-It's Sunday, and the rainy sky is as gray as Tamika's mood as she and her family set off for their weekly visit to the nursing home. The Jordans are going to see Momma Lou, who has Alzheimer's disease. The nine-year-old must reintroduce herself to this aged lady every week, and the whole situation makes her resentful and uncomfortable. Later, poring over old photo albums with her father, she sees Momma Lou dressed for her wedding in an African bridal robe, cuddling her newborn namesake, and dressing Tamika like an angel for her first Christmas pageant. Seeing these pictures makes the girl try to give Momma Lou her memories back by showing her the photos. Sometimes they seem to trigger a response in the old woman's eyes, especially the shot of her in jail following a protest march. "My secret life of crime," says Momma Lou, before bursting into laughter and song. Soon people in the nursing home are singing "We Shall Overcome" along with her. This is the last time that Tamika really talks with her grandmother, who declines rapidly after this visit, leaving the child sad, yet happy to have her memories. The book concludes with a brief description of the disease and a list of resources for further information. This bibliotherapeutic title will help to serve a need, and the story is straightforward and inspirational. Johnson's acrylic paintings are done in somber and institutional hues, which prove a suitable backdrop for this thoughtful story.Anna DeWind Walls, Milwaukee Public LibraryCopyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Ages 3-6. Tamika visits Momma Lou every Sunday afternoon at the nursing home. Momma Lou usually does not recognize her nine-year-old granddaughter, because she suffers from Alzheimer's disease. Frustrated by Momma Lou's inability to remember their special times together, Tamika feels as if she's lost her best friend. But after discovering Momma Lou's old scrapbook with pictures of her singing with choirs and marching in civil rights demonstrations, Tamika decides to "give Momma Lou her memories back." The next visits to the home are filled with pictures, newspaper clippings, and stories that Tamika hopes will trigger Momma Lou's memory. This delicate story, with a bittersweet conclusion, gives children a realistic but softened look at a devastating illness. Johnson's illustrations, in broad brush strokes and deep colors, depict the setting in a dignified manner and successfully reflect the deep attachment between grandparent and grandchild. A helpful endnote provides a bit of additional information on the disease. Cynthia TurnquestCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

This helped me have a great party for ADULTS By analyzethis OK I cheated I bought this for myself, figuring that my skill level as a non-Persian adult was probably on about the level of a Persian child. And I was right! This is a great book if you want to dip your toe in the charming New Year customs of the Persian world (Iran, Afghanistan, Kurdistan) with recipes that are easy to follow.

It is OK By Neilu As a cook and a cookbook collector, I was very excited to get this book, expecting to be like all other books of Mrs. Batmanglij; unfortunately not so well. It looks like fabricated plan with some great recipes ( repeated in her other books) with some very unusual crafts trying to make this festivities as much as possible American. I guess it was meant to be good but not meeting my expectation. Not much recommended as her other books.

The Triptych Series, a collection of short stories dubbed ‘Hum-hor’, is a combination of humor and horror, the macabre, and the unexpected. Each volume will include three stories as in Triptych art. I’ll be exploring the darker side of human nature a la The Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock, and American Horror Story by putting my characters, some likable and others not so, through their paces. In the first installment, “Old Nick,” we meet frustrated Franco, his duplicitous wife Carol Ann and the attractive stranger Nick, whose agenda is certainly his own. The next story “A Glimpse of Eternity” is set in a cozy cabin where two couples, each from different times and circumstances are able to live their most precious moments for eternity. “Robbie’s APP” allows a look into the lives of Giles and Virginia Thurston. They are rich enough to satisfy their every appetite until Virginia lets her birthday gift, Robbie’s APP, get out of control. Be ready for a delicious ending.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Three Humorous Horror Stories Demonstrate The Author's Considerable Range By Uncle G These stories read like urban legends, well told with characters who we know. Some of them we like and others we despise, but that's what creates the humor and horror of love gone wrong, out-of-control vanity and endless nostalgia.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Ver disappointing By Avid Reader Conceptually a great idea but unfortunately the execution leaves much to be desired. Short story writing is an art at the centre of which is the ability to rapidly develop a connection with characters and settings which are meaningful and encourage the imagination. Unfortunately this is lacking here and feels more like an abandoned attempt at writing longer fiction.

Only this time Kara is magicless without her grimoire and Sordyr, the forest demon, is intent on keeping them there. Kara and Taff will meet other inhabitants of the Thickety in their search for a safe way out, including the infamous witch, Mary Kettle. The Whispering Trees (The Thickety Book 2), by J. A. White

From School Library Journal Gr 5–8—In this relentlessly grim follow-up to 2014's The Thickety: A Path Begins, (HarperCollins), siblings Kara and Taff are on the run inside the dangerous forest known as the Thickety. Demon Sordyr is hot on their heels and intent on keeping them inside the woods. With the help of a beguiling new friend with a demonic past, Kara and Taff search for a way out of the cursed forest and away from their lost lives in the village of De'Noran. Kara's magical ability to communicate with animals begins to grow, but like all magic, it comes at a terrible price: in this case, her memories. The plot turns come fast and furious, while the dark imagery of the forest and spot illustrations add to the underlying feeling of dread. The nail-biting suspense will keep readers turning the pages late into the night, and in Kara, readers will find a protagonist to root for. Fans of happy endings, however, should search for a different adventure. VERDICT Readers who enjoyed the spine-chilling first installment will be eager to get their hands on this sequel.—Elisabeth Gattullo Marrocolla, Darien Library, CT

From the Back Cover

The Thickety is no place to be alone.

The branches closed behind Kara and Taff when they rode Shadowdancer into the dark forest. But there is no returning to the village, and Sordyr chases close behind. The forest demon has a terrible plan—one that requires Kara's magic to succeed.

The dangers of the Thickety are many. Its plants are often deadly, strange animals whisper among the trees, and unknown magic lurks behind every twist and shadow of the path. But more dangerous still are the other inhabitants of the Thickety: Sordyr and his snapping branchwolves; the shadowy residents of an abandoned village; and Imogen, a creature with an unspeakable hunger.

They would do anything she asked. All she had to do was use her magic.

And then there's Mary Kettle, a strange witch seeking redemption from a horrifying past. She offers to lead them out of the Thickety while teaching Kara how to cast spells without a grimoire. The children are hesitant to trust her . . . but this could be their only chance to escape.

Or the first step down a dark and wicked path.

I didn't realize how many details I had forgotten about it since I first read it in October last year. I also probably loved it even more this time. Though I loved it like crazy the first time too. This book is just amazing. And I loved it oh so much. Just like I loved book one. And I will be starting book three tomorrow, and I simply cannot wait. It's going to be amazing. Sigh. And the writing in this book is so stunning. Jerry is an amazing author. I just loved everything about this book.Book one, A Path Begins, was pretty dark. And it ended in a bad place, ack. The Whispering Trees start in just that moment. And it's so amazing. The Thickety is a strange and dangerous place. Loved getting to see it up close. To learn more about all the different animals in there. How they suffer. To learn more about the forest demon Sordyr too, though, shudders. He was all kinds of awful. The twist at the end was the best. So amazing. And a bit shocking. Every moment in this book was incredible to read about.Kara is a twelve year old witch. And in this book we see her use her power more. And it was so fantastic to read about. Kara is amazing. Sigh. But oh my gosh, I'm still not over how she uses her power. What she loses when she does it. Sobs. There must be a way to get her memories back. There must be. If not.. it's just so sad. Yet written perfectly too. But yes. Heartbreaking. Even so, I loved reading about Kara testing her powers. And how Mary was teaching her about them. I loved reading about everything.I just loved re-reading this book so much. Kara is the best character to read about. She's so brave and smart and caring and I adore her to pieces. I'm a bit sad there was no Lucas in this one, but there will be in book three, and I'm so excited. But anyway. Kara is the best. And I adore her little brother Taff oh so much. He's adorable. And their relationship is the best. There are some new characters in this one too that I love so much. Like Mary Kettle. She was creepy. Yet I loved her. Really liked reading about Safi. There is so much darkness in this book. And I loved it oh so much. The Thickety is a dark places. Full of evil. Like Imogen. Shudders. She was the worst, I think. And the most amazing to read about. Sigh. And the giant dead creature. That was all kinds of awesome to read about again. Just, I loved everything that happened in this book. And I don't know how to mention it all. It is a big adventure. A quest. And it is so much fun. Though not really any fun happening at all. But anyway. It is a beautiful book. So perfect.I don't know what else to say about this precious. I could probably mention all the plot points, but I won't. I just wanted to share again that I really, really loved The Thickety: The Whispering Trees. It is a perfect sequel. So dark and delicious. I loved every moment. Also wish to mention that the artwork is special and oh so gorgeous. Especially the covers. So much love for them all. Anyway. If you have yet to read this sequel, then you really must. It is a book worth reading and loving. You must all read this book.---I first read this book from October 21st to October 22nd 2014. My review can be found here: http://carinabooks.blogspot.no/2014/10/review-thickety-whispering-trees-by-j.htmlI read this book for the second time from August 4th to August 5th 2015. Certainly, within the last few years, that warning has been revisited by a great number of very good middle grade fantasy books. And I don't mean just the usual Grimm fairy tale reworkings. I mean original works of great imaginative vitality and darkness. A three book series by Sage Blackwood takes "Jinx" into the Urwald, (Jinx). Anne Ursu's "Real Boy" learns about a mysterious and magical forest, (The Real Boy). And so it goes. And that brings us to this marvelously dark and compelling volume for advanced middle grade readers. This is the second book in the Thickety series and follows the further adventures of our heroine Kara. I guess one could start with this book in the series. There is enough reflection by the heroine that an alert reader could piece together the back story, but it would be a challenge. Better, and much more satisfying, to start with book one and then dive into this second volume. And what a deep dark dive it will be. NO SPOILERS OR SUMMARY, but this time around our heroine and her plucky younger brother are in the heart of the Thickety mystery in the company of the famous feared witch, Mary Kettle. The villain is rooted in the Wood; actually he is literally rooted in the wood - he can't leave because he is connected to the very fiber of the underground root mass, which is a chilling idea that the author brings home with creepy force. As always, the author is a master of building dread. The Thickety has a personality and a heavy presence that informs all of the action in the book. There are innumerable little bits of magic and detail that serve to create a single overarching presence and depth to the place that is remarkable. These trees may be whispering, but they aren't whispering sweet nothings. There is certainly a plot here. There is a fine conflicted heroine, excellent supporting characters and a variety of original and well conceived incidental characters. But it is the descriptive prose, the scene setting and the sheer weight of this imagined island world that is the distinct and enduring appeal of this series. And this second book doesn't lose momentum. If anything, the series, now that all of the premise setting has been accomplished, becomes even more immersive and captivating.Lots of reviews suggest that this book is "relentlessly grim". I didn't get that. It is dark; it drives home the fact that magic isn't sparkly fun wand waving; it establishes that acts have consequences and that there is often a price to be paid for power. But, the book and its heroes are sustained by great hope and spirit and resourcefulness and strength of character. There are many tests, physical and mental, and our heroes are not found wanting. There is also grace and forgiveness and unexpected kindness. There is a lot of light in the darkness here, which may explain why so many find the series compelling. The upshot? This book is not about larking about magical woods. It requires more of the reader, but offers more in return. For the right middle grade and early YA reader I would think this will hit the mark. Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

By Joe Crowe The cover looks like old-school kids' adventure books and it reads like Escape From Witch Mountain. Kids are the stars, and they encounter good and bad monsters and creatures, as they have a thrilling fantasy-world adventure. Good times. In the copy I have, the pages look weathered and beat-up, like the book has been on a library shelf for 30 years. You can't get that effect on Kindle (not that there's anything wrong with Kindle.) And if this effect is not on purpose, then it's a happy, geeky accident. This is an incredibly complete fantasy setting, the kind a role-playing game fan would die for. It seemed like there would be a map somewhere, but that's OK. I think readers of this will get so caught up in it, they'll make their own.

Every spring the little girl who lives next door to Rosario helps him plant vegetables. One spring, Rosario plants a fig tree, which soon bears sweet purple fruit. But when fall comes, he bends it over and buries it in the ground. What kind of magic is Rosario performing? The next spring, on planting day, the little girl and Rosario make holes for tomato plants, push in stakes for beans and plant other vegetables. Then Rosario begins to unearth the buried fig tree. It looks dead, for sure. But one hot sunny day, a fresh green leaf appears. Inspired by her next-door neighbor, Charis Wahl has written a sweet and simple story about a little girl’s first-hand experience with the magic of gardening. The story is complemented by Luc Melanson’s gently humorous illustrations.

Rosario's Fig Tree, by Charis Wahl

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—"Garden magician" Rosario has a friend and helper next door who devotedly follows his miraculous effect on things that grow. His garden is full of vegetables—radicchio, potatoes, radishes, tomatoes, peppers, beans, zucchini, cucumbers, and eggplants. Each day, the girl next door marvels at his knowledge: "He knows the perfect day to put in every plant and seed. It never snows or gets too cold after that." The elderly gardener's addition of a fig tree entrances the child as it provides friends and neighbors with sweet fruit all summer, but she is mystified and deeply concerned when the tree receives a "burial" and then disappears, covered in snow through the winter. As the cycle turns and the warmth brings back Rosario's helpful friends, their sage counsel, a resurgence of green everywhere, and a tiny new leaf on the fig tree, this first-person narrative emphasizes the bond between generations, the value of learning, and the passing on of knowledge. "No magic…You just learn, and then you know." Illustrations include full-page digital paint images and smaller, more focused and telescoped views of the narrator, Rosario, and his garden within a palette of warm gold, greens and brown. Exaggerated heads on slender frames, the faces in profile and large, expressive eyes convey a host of emotions and the warmth between a young girl and her dear friend. VERDICT Perfect to introduce the wonder of growing things, this title is a recommended general purchase.—Mary Elam, Learning Media Services, Plano ISD, TX

Review "[A] story of cross-cultural neighborliness." — New York Times

"Melanson’s digital art has a charming oddness, capped by a witty scene of Rosario and his elderly Italian friends debating." — New York Times"This sweetly thoughtful story explores life and the wonders of gardening, as well as the edifying nature of intergenerational friendships." — Booklist"A child's wonder at the care it takes to make things grow and the joys of fresh figs make an engaging story." — Kirkus Reviews"Perfect to introduce the wonder of growing things, this title is a recommended general purchase for all libraries." — School Library Journal"Rosario lives next door. He’s a magician. He doesn't pull rabbits out of hats or find pennies behind your ears. He’s a garden magician."— from the book

I have been teaching her gardening for nearly 3 years. She has a deck garden at her home _ tomatoes, herbs and Bell Peppers. We took the book on a recent vacation. When she asked me to read the story to her she pointed to the picture and said, " Rosario is you Paypa (that's what she calls me) and I am the little person. Right?" This was a good moment.

But if YOU'RE a gardener, perhaps it evens out.A young girl tells us about her neighbor, Rosario, who seems to be a gardening magician. He even manages to grow figs in the wrong climate, but when winter comes, he buries the tree and the girl mourns its death. But Rosario just smiles. The artwork is very simplistic, with the humans sporting enormous heads and smaller bodies. Despite things being very plain, great effort was put into establishing perspective. Rows of houses are rendered, rather than the artist filling things in with vague colors, and you actually feel like you might know the size of the gardens and houses.I recommend borrowing this from your local library before purchase, just in case you and your little one aren't as into it as I am. But certainly give it a try!
