The perfect gift for that cat-crazy person in your life By Jen Michaels I first encountered this book at a local book festival, and it's downright gorgeous to look at. The illustrations are intricate and charming, similar in style to the cover illustration, done in deep "folksy" colors like hunter green and slate blue. Each illustration fills an entire two pages and shows the cat in context: sitting on a bed, chasing bust bunnies through a hallway, being carried in a basket, etc. They're the kind of illustrations that you can stop and look at for awhile, finding little hidden surprises, before moving onto the next page. The haiku are lovely too; I found myself pausing to re-read each haiku and appreciate how it complements the illustration. There's also four glossary pages in the back of the book with an educational blurb about each of the twenty breeds described here. I was initially taken aback by the price tag, but it's printed on luxurious paper and is beautifully bound. I wouldn't hesitate to give this book as a gift.If you're buying this book with a certain cat breed in mind, the breeds covered are Maine Coon, Ragdoll, Turkish Angora, Siamese, Russian Blue, Bombay, Norwegian Forest Cat, British Shorthair, American Shorthair, Burmese, Birman, Balinese, Himalayan, Japanese Bobtail, Abyssinian, Persian, Havana Brown, Scottish Fold, Bengal, and Manx.

With over a dozen beautiful feline illustrations and accompanying haiku, THE MAINE COON'S HAIKU is a treasure for animal and poetry lovers.The poems are all in the haiku style, and are well-written. Each haiku is a reflection of the cat breed it accompanies. They also evoke the seasons nature, feelings of playfulness and enjoyment, and many other emotions. Young readers will enjoy the playful words, while older readers will catch the clever references contained within.The illustrations are a whimsical delight. The individuality of each cat breed shines through the page, with complementary colors in the surrounding land- and house-scapes completing the designs. The cats are expressive and adorable. Readers will love picking out the individual cats in the American Shorthair scene, and determining the extent of the Persian's snowy annoyance.An appendix with descriptions and histories of each breed complete the book, making it not just a lovely addition to a poetry collection, but a great book for kids who want to learn more about cats.THE MAINE COON'S HAIKU is a perfect addition to every cat lover's collection.

The sections alternate between indoor cats and outdoor cats, with five in each of the four sections. The last four pages give a brief description and history of each breed.Pros: A great introduction to haiku as well as a treat for all cat lovers. Fun illustrations.Cons: An explanation of haiku will be necessary, as there is none in the book.

The children in your family will be both entertained and excited to learn about'The Magic Lamp' and 'The Dog and the Magician'. In addition, they will see some pictures of the culture in India and undoubtedly ask you some questions about the country. The author has also interjected vocabulary words such as 'acclaimed, exhaustion, foreigner and counterfeit' which will improve their knowledge.In the first one, there is a gold lamp, a Princess and a genie~ Doesn't get much better than that for a child, does it?The second one has a cute little dog named Kanak that has a powerful skill. This one has a real surprise at the end and also involves a magician.Excellent stories to stimulate your children's thought processes. The stories also exemplify love, giving to others and being kind.Most highly recommended.

By Grady Harp In 1983, François Bissonnette, created the early versions of the Zirons. But it was not until 1998, a few years after the birth of his two daughters, that the author published his first book of Zirons. And lucky for all that he has embraced a new direction. These little stories involve imagination, realism, surrealism, and magic and are bound to be favorites of children throughout the world. But now François visits that time-honored land of fairy tales in this Book 8 of his Stories for Children. In this book the fantasies are accompanied by richly colored photographs of models in costumes to match the story - a new and welcome addition to the quality of the book.The stories this time are only tow with the emphasis on the longer first story THE MAGIC LAMP -a story that takes place in Delhi and concerns a young merchant Rasik who is kinds and generous. He offers his home to a homeless man who has a map that leads to gold. The map wishes to give the map to Rasik but Rasik insists on paying him for it. On a journey Rasik meets Princess Lalita and he offers her the treasure fore which he is searching, but the map only reveals a trunk in side which is a genie who of course offers him wishes that prove to lead to Rasik's happiness.The other story is a sweet little short tail called THE DIG AND THE MAGICIAN and has just as many richly colorful photographs and surprises as the first.François Bissonnette has found a style for his stories - fine reading with beautiful color images of very handsome men and beautiful women. Silk, Author/Reviewer This children's book is part of a wonderful collection created by Francois Bissonnette. The first story here is "The Magic Lamp." It's a once-upon-a-time tale about a young merchant, Rasik, who lives in Delhi, India. He's young and handsome, but not rich. He's kind and generous, always sharing a few coins with beggars. He comes across a man lying on the ground, tired and hungry. He takes the man to his home, feeds him and gives him a bed to sleep in. The next morning he tells Arman there is a caravan passing through his home town, gives him some gold coins to buy the treasure map which did not help Arman find any wealth. The next day Rasik sees Princess Lalita sitting on the sand in deep thought. Her father wants her to marry soon and he's put out the word to all the rich men in his region. The one who offers the most money will become Lalita's husband. Well, we know this isn't going to happen! This is a wonderful classical tale to read to children at home or in the classroom. Teens may enjoy reading this also. I, as an adult, enjoyed it. The next story, "The Dog and The Magician" is about a small dog, Kanak (can you spell his name backwards?), is being chased by other dogs. He runs into a restaurant to hide but the owner chases him away with a stick. Will the baker be a kinder man to animals? This is a magical tale one will love. There are no illustrations in this well written story book. The photos are real and depict the dress and attire worn during the early years of India. The stories are very appealing and will be fun to read to children.

As It Was: A Memoir, by Robert M. Pennoyer

About the Author Robert M. Pennoyer attended St. Paul's School and Harvard College. During World War II he saw action in the Pacific as a young Naval officer. After graduation from Columbia Law School, he became, successively, a Federal prosecutor, and a counsel in the Office of the Secretary of Defense during the Eisenhower years. In 1958 he returned to private practice in New York, joining a small firm, Patterson Belknap & Webb, which he helped to build into one of the leading firms in the country. For many years he served as counsel to the Rockefeller foundation.

Committed to public service, Pennoyer founded a halfway house for men emerging from prison, and over the years served as a trustee of Columbia University, Union Theological Seminary, the Carnegie Institution of Washington, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, and, for half a century each, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Morgan Library.

In the 1970s, under his leadership as president, the Mrs. Giles Whiting Foundation established, at the suggestion of his poet wife, Victoria Parsons Pennoyer, the prestigious Whiting Writers’ Awards.

He lives on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and, at the age of 90, still goes to the office every day.

Thoughtful, personal, immediate, suffused with the values of the best of his tribe and his generation. I felt like I really knew the author when I finished his book, and I was left wishing I did.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A fascinating long personal story. By pianomac A fascinating long personal story. The author must be now about 90 years old. His great-grandfather was Pierpont Morgan, so he was brought up in a family of great wealth and importance. He himself was, it seems, a highly able lawyer, involved in many important affairs of state in the US. Considering today's political climate, the story of his transformation from the Republican attitudes of his family to, apparently over the past ten years, a supporter of the Democratic party is highly interesting. Clearly he was an Eisenhower Republican, and if the Republicans are going to lose thoughtful and highly competent people like him, this can be important. However; as a story, strongly recommended!!
