Book 3 -- Snake Avenue: The Cold Case of Virginia Brooks. This third book in The Colder Case Series details the facts surrounding the similar murder of little Virginia Brooks in 1931. Her body was found dumped in a barren mesa near San Diego, like the five little bodies that were found in the Angeles mesa. Her cause and manner of death was similar. She was the same age and race. Her murder could have been committed by the same man, or men, that killed Nina and May Martin six years earlier and then murdered Melba and Madeline Everett and their friend Jeanette Stephens six years later. The investigators did all they could with the science available to them, and tried so hard to follow trace evidence it is now a fascinating look into the history of forensic science, including entomology and horticulture. Join the factual hunt for the most cunning serial killer of the 20th century, one who was never caught, one who was happiest when someone else was convicted of his murders.

The Colder Case Series will not stop until the killer is tracked down in the last book.

Snake Avenue: The Cold Case of Ten-year-old Virginia Brooks (The Colder Case Series) (Volume 3), by George Sherwood

From the Author In The Colder Case Series, Uncivil Twilight is the 1925 case about the trial of S.C. Stone for the murders of the Martin sisters. Colder Case is the 1937 case and the trial of Albert Dyer for the murders of Melba and Madeline Everett and their friend Jeanette Stephens. Snake Avenue is a similar 1931 case about the murder of Virgina Brooks in San Diego, which is still unsolved. In the Court of Deadly Assumptions is about another 1937 case, the trial of Samuel Elmore for the murder of Joan Kuleba. There was no intention of writing more than Colder Case, but research revealed too many similar murders of children and they had to be followed. None of these are light, entertaining reading.  They are real cases with gruesome facts as reported in the news and official records. The testimony can be difficult at times and that made these cases more vulnerable to wrongful convictions because of the demand for swift punishment.

About the Author Sherwood was compelled to this research. In his Moral Panic, Philip Jenkins, without naming any names and without any further explanation, alludes to the Albert Dyer case as the "pied piper" murder case that the media "mistakenly, blamed on a 'degenerate' with a series of convictions for morals offenses against children," (p 51.) Who? What? Where? When? How? It was that mystery that sparked the research that almost immediately revealed the sister's parents did not believe the "pied piper" theory. The parents of the three girls did not attend his execution but a police officer uncle did. So it began.

I felt that I was able to get into the actual investigation and was frustrated at times that the police didn't investigate some suspects more thoroughly. However, since this case never had a person arrested and tried, there wasn't as much information available. The author had to rely on newspaper articles. I believe that this case would be solved today with all the modern day forensics and investigative skills available. I think the author did identify the killer and/or killers in his last chapter.

New in paperback! *"At last: a humorous, useful and pedantry-free book about bullying!"--Kirkus Reviews(starred)Readers who love Louis Sachar and Andrew Clements will find this charming, easy-to-read middle-grade novel an absolute hoot! The new kid in school dresses like a businessman, carries a briefcase, and never says anything except "Who?" Frankly, he's a bit odd, maybe because he's actually an owl. Fans of Guinea Dog will adore this latest hilarious story. When the new kid joins his class, Woodrow agrees with his schoolmates--Toulouse is really weird. He's short-- kindergarten short--dresses in a suit like a grandpa, has huge eyes, and barely says a word. But Woodrow isn't exactly Mr. Popularity himself. The frequent target of the class bully, he figures that maybe all Toulouse needs is a chance. When the two are put together in gym to play volleyball, they make quite the team. Toulouse can serve, set, and spike like a pro. He really knows how to fly around the court. But when the attention and teasing switch back to Woodrow, he learns that the new kid is great at something else: being a friend.Full of heart and laughs, Odd, Weird & Little is another winner from the author of the state-list favorite Guinea Dog.Also available in hardcover (978-1-60684-374-1) and eBook (978-1-60684-375-8) formats.Review Quotes for Odd, Weird & Little:*"...perfect for independent readers and for reading aloud...an outrageously funny premise."--Kirkus Reviews starred review "...the owl-in-disguise element here is surprisingly effective, taking a standard tale of an underdog's triumph and giving it a charming weirdness that reaffirms the value of being a bit odd..."--BCCB"...a warm and funny story about being true to oneself and standing up for what's right."--Publishers Weekly Awards and State Lists for Guinea Dog: Won the Washington State Scandiuzzi Children's Book Award and the Kansas William Allen White Award, received an honor for the Massachusetts Book Award. Odd, Weird & Little, by Patrick Jennings

From School Library Journal Gr 3–6—Toulouse Hulot, a new kid in school from Quebec, wears dapper outfits, carries a briefcase, and even uses a quill pen to write his lessons. He is a talented painter and musician, an accomplished fly fisherman, and the victim of the class bully and his henchman. His only friend is Woodrow, who shares his love of fishing and finally becomes the one to stand up to the mean kids and ultimately see Toulouse for who he really is. Woodrow is a most unlikely narrator, one who embraces his own nerdiness and stammers through most of his conversations. Fans of Jennings's Guinea Dog (Egmont USA, 2010) will find this a delightful book, one that stands with classics such as Avi's Poppy (Orchard, 1995). A remarkable story and a great read-aloud.—Wayne R. Cherry, Jr., First Baptist Academy Library, Houston, TX

From Booklist Despite, or maybe because of, the concealing gloves and bowler hat that enigmatic new arrival Toulouse Hulot wears to school every day, 10-year-old outsider, Woodrow, is compelled to be his friend. The two discover shared interests both in fly-fishing (though Toulouse’s catches never seem to make it into his creel) and in coping with the attentions of class bullies Garrett and Hubcap. Jennings never comes out with an explicit revelation, but readers would have to be comatose to miss the huge clues—from the first letters of the title words and all the chapter headings on—that Toulouse is no ordinary, or even human, student. Eventually, separate confrontations by Toulouse and, later, several classmates cow the bullies with unrealistic ease. Still, in general the modeled coping strategies are at least feasible, and as for Toulouse, the continuing cluelessness of all the grown-ups and children (even Woodrow doesn’t grasp the truth about his predatory buddy until the end) add broad overtones of hilarity. Grades 3-5. --John Peters

About the Author Patrick Jennings blasted onto the children's book scene with his critically acclaimed Faith and the Electric Dogs, which received many starred reviews and is now in film development. Known for his wide range of topics and styles, he has turned his focus to writing silly accessible stories that will appeal to middle-schoolers, including his recent Egmont releases, Guinea Dog and its sequels, Guinea Dog 2 and 3, Lucky Cap, Invasion of the Dognappers, and My Homework Ate My Homework. A former resident of San Francisco and Bisbee, Arizona, Jennings now lives in Washington State. You can visit him at www.patrickjennings.com.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Fun Magical Realism, (Really), for Middle Graders By Pop Bop This is a very deeply cool little book, and much more than a school daze comedy. Woodrow is a decent kid - bright, insightful, good hearted and level headed. He is generally acknowledged to be the weirdest kid in his class, (which feels middle schoolish), but mostly just because he's shy and has a few minor obsessions, (like always carrying around duck - don't call it "duct" - tape). That, however, is enough to earn him the attention of the class bullies and the disdain of the girls and the popular kids. But then, a new kid, Toulouse, joins the class. Toulouse is so deeply idiosyncratic and unique, so weird, that Woodrow realizes that Toulouse will be the weird kid and the lightening rod for abuse. The problem is that Woodrow wants a friend, would be a good friend, and finds himself getting close to the otherwise isolated Toulouse. As Woodrow notes, in a classic example of middle school logic, that means that instead of escaping attention Woodrow will just get double attention for befriending Toulouse and being doubly weird. The plot of the book, if you want to call it that, follows Woodrow and Toulouse and their adventures as their friendship grows. But the book is much more than just that. Here's the special part. While Woodrow belongs to the honorable tradition of bright, rueful outsider middle school narrators, Toulouse is an appealing one of a kind character, the likes of which I have never before encountered. He most resembles a middle school version of Chauncey Gardiner, the ethereal, enigmatic center of Jerzy Kosinski's novel "Being There". Toulouse is smart, accomplished, old fashioned and somehow both firmly grounded and surreal. He is, almost literally, odd, weird and little. He is both firmly present and yet also oddly distant and almost otherwordly. As a result parts of this book play out as realistic school humor while other parts feel like a fable, or an elegant feather-light allegory about difference and acceptance. The writing is literate, accomplished, restrained and focused. The author can do raucous classroom humor, subtle deadpan humor, and delicate observational and descriptive passages that would put writers of adult oriented literature to shame.Blurbs for this book mention Andrew Clements, Dan Gutman, Gordon Korman and Tom Angleberger. That's fair in the sense that they are all accomplished in this genre, and "Odd, Weird & Little" is at least equally as accomplished. But it also expands the boundaries by introducing a character like Toulouse and something that approaches middle school magical realism. How's that for an achievement? So, an intriguing change of pace that offers special rewards to adventurous readers. Definitely worth a look. Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book

It's the first I've read by author Patrick Jennings and is about a little owl called Toulouse Hulot. Toulouse joins a new school after moving from Quebec, much to the fascination of his classmates. He wears a suit and tie, glasses, carries a briefcase and is one of the cutest book characters I've ever come across.Woodrow is the only person in Toulouse's class who really gives him the time of day, and the two quickly become friends, despite all Toulouse's oddities. Themes of bullying and individuality are both at the forefront of this book, and learning to be happy with yourselfas you are, no matter how strange people might think you are.Odd, Weird & Little is an important book for children of all ages, thanks to its themes and issues explored. It's also one of the cutest books I've read, and that's all down to Toulouse and his small owl body. Aww. I want one of him for myself! Actually, what I want to do is read the book again, so I think I'll go and do that. It's a quick read but such a brilliant one - do check it out if you get a chance!4.5/5

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Cute but a little boring By Canital This book is well suited for young readers and is a cute story. It's themed on bullying, but in quite a gentle way. It is from the perspective of a child, which is cute and pure. However, it lacked suspense or tension and there wasn't much depth to the story. It's quite an easy read, and probably good for reluctant readers. However, I think that more avid young readers would find it boring and flat as a story.

My copy of "Wonder Woman: An Origin Story," by John Sazakalis (it's spelled "Sazaklis" on the cover) and Luciano Vecchio, just arrived so I read it immediately. It's beautifully illustrated and presents a thorough version of who Wondie is and how she came to be. There are discussion questions in the back of the book, and a glossary for some terms. However, they use "Themyscira" instead of "Paradise Island," certainly not a great choice for kiddie readers. Also, the Amazons are termed "warriors," and the Contest (as unfortunately usual) is presented as an all-sports event, no brain work involved. (Not anything like I've ever thought it should be.) When Diana battles Ares, she says, "Your power comes from hate, but my power comes from love. And that is much stronger!" Then she defeats him with a kick. Love = fighting prowess. If one loves, one punches. Hm.(There's a nice sequence of her getting two armies to stop fighting by talking with each other.)Diana's powers come not from Amazon Training, but from the gods: Athena, Aphrodite, Hermes… and Zeus, not Hercules. The only thing we see Diana training in, is etiquette to be a princess. Not that crown princesses have to be trained in how to lead, how to run a country, how to listen to their people and solve problems, how to balance a country's budget, etc. Ah, Disney (and so many others), how you have affected the way we think of princesses! They just sit around, smile and drink tea with outstretched pinkies.I laughed when Diana asked, "Why send one of my sisters [to the outside world] when I am the best?" Also gave a LOL when the story turned very vague as to what kind of job Diana got when she took on her Di Prince ID. I understand. The mythos changes every few months, it seems. It's difficult to keep up with it.Still, it's a story kids can follow easily. They meet Cheetah, Giganta, and Circe (nice definition of her magic!) in addition to everyone else. Philippus, Menalippe, and Artemis are present, though none are named. Biggest plus: Steve Trevor is nowhere to be found!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. There needs to be more books like this for young girls By tscali I bought this for my three year old, she loves Wonder Woman. I had trouble finding a book that is about just Wonder Woman. and not the Justice League. There needs to be more books like this for young girls.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Cute Wonder Woman origin book. By Clancy Fern A great children's book and introduction to Wonder Woman. This has a lot of Wonder Woman related stuff packed in it, from Hippolyta to the Invisible Jet to her villains like Cheetah, Ares, and Circe. There's even a two-page spread of Diana Prince doing the spin-transformation into Wonder Woman. The only beef I have with this book is that it left out a crucial part of Wonder Woman's history -- Steve Trevor and his crashing onto Paradise Island. I'm also not a huge fan of the Justice League animation style they used.

Some simple patterns which I feel are very hard to follow in the way they are written...glad it was free...I don't feel this would be worth purchasing, as much of this and more can be found free on the Internet....along with videos, too!

The Greek god Zeus is depressed for no one has worshiped him for almost two thousand years. At the same time, he suffers from gastrointestinal maladies which have not been remedied by the mythological methods of the physician-god Asclepius and his four physician daughters. He subsequently sends Hercules and King Midas to earth in to attempt to bring Greek mythology to modern man but they are miserable failures and convert to Christianity.  At the Supreme God’s yearly checkup, Asclepius tells Zeus that all of his problems are psychosomatic and that even twenty-first century medicine would be unable to alleviate his symptoms. On a bet, Asclepius offers to return to earth to prove that medicine today is inferior to the ways of the ancients. He joins Dr. Norman Kugelman, an ethical and hardworking Jewish gastroenterologist in New Jersey, who is enmeshed in a failing marriage. Asclepius finds out that current medical practice is much more difficult than he ever imagined and is humbled by the experience. Zeus can no longer stand the pain and he visits Kugelman on earth for a second opinion which includes a colonoscopy. The gastroenterologist makes an unexpected diagnosis while at the same time Zeus gives Kugelman some valuable godly advice but the age old question: did man invent the gods or did god invent man, remains unanswered.

The Myth of Dr. Kugelman, by DAVID MARGOLIS MD

Review "The Myth of Dr. Kugelman follows both the plight of the Greek god Zeus and the earthbound Dr. Norman Kugelman, a gastroenterologist in New Jersey. Zeus is suffering from pains in his gut, and no one on Mt. Olympus can help him, so he makes his way to earth in the hope that Dr. Kugelman can cure him. It's a slightly outrageous, always humorous novel that will appeal to everyone whether they suffer from gastrointestinal distress or not." --Wyn Cooper, poet and author

About the Author David Margolis MD Bio David Margolis retired from the practice of gastroenterology in 2013 to become a full time writer. His stories have appeared in The Canadian Medical Association Journal, JAMA: Internal Medicine, Missouri Medicine, HumorPress.com, Long Story Short, Still Crazy, and The Jewish Light of St. Louis. His first book, "Looking Behind: The Gaseous Life of a Gastroenterologist", a collection of biographical and humorous short stories, was released last year. He resides in St. Louis, MO with his wife Laura, Bernie the poodle, and a set of golf clubs.

Kate

I'm the last mermaid.

I'm back on shores of Lake Erie, but the cold waters are silent. There is nothing here for me but ghosts and the beach glass that litters the rocky shore. Long ago, I lived below the waves. Now, I am the sole survivor, and at long last, my mermaid glamour is leaving me.

Every day, I walk the beach. Every day, I wonder what happened to my people. The little pieces of colored glass that wash ashore give me simple pleasure. They are gifts from the lake, reminders of home. I fashion them into trinkets: necklaces, earrings, bracelets. They are beautiful things. The humans seem to love them.

Every day, I walk the beach. Nothing ever changes, until the day he says hello.

Cooper

I'm dying.

It's not a question; it's a fact. The cancer is eating me alive. They told me I have six months to live, maybe less. I came home, back to Chancellor on Lake Erie, to die. The sunsets are vivid there, and I will relish every one.

I've never seen anything more beautiful than a Lake Erie sunset, until I see her.

All life is as fragile as glass.

What would you sacrifice to save the one you love?

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. The Glass Mermaid By Book Blog Bird The Glass Mermaid is a novella about Kate, the last mermaid. She lives on the shore of Lake Eerie collecting pieces of glass washed up by the lake and making them into beautiful jewellery. In the same town lives Cooper, an artist who is dying of cancer and who has come back to the town he grew up in to die.The Glass Mermaid was a quick read, but the author has managed to create two characters who I ended up really rooting for. It’s told from a dual POV and it was lovely to watch Kate and Cooper fall in love even though neither of them were really looking for a romantic attachment. We got some nice back story about Kate’s mermaid heritage as well and why she is the last mermaid.Poppy Lawless’s writing style is very good and she can clearly write a romance without descending into flowery, bodice-ripping language, which is great. The novella is really well plotted - she sticks to the point and ties things up nicely at the end. I was really glad Kate and Cooper got a happy ever after! If I had one thing I would change about this novella, it is that I think it actually had the potential to be a full-length novel. The two MCs are well written, but I would have enjoyed more build-up in their relationship and I would have liked to have seen more of the supporting characters. This isn’t really a criticism as such, because what is in the novella is really good, but yeah, I think it would also have worked as a full length novel.Nevertheless, I would still definitely recommend this if you’re into mermaids and want a sweet romance to read this summer.I received a copy of The Glass Mermaid in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks to the author, Poppy Lawless.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Beautifully Written and Magically Romantic! By Becky Stephens, Editor and Reviewer The Glass Mermaid is one of the most beautifully written books I've ever had the pleasure of reading. This novella is told from multiple perspectives of two lovely characters, neither of which are looking for love. Yet, both of which are desperate for love. Kate is the last mermaid of a Lake Erie sea kingdom. Cooper has moved in to his grandmother's home to spend his remaining days painting the gorgeous Lake Erie sunrises and sunsets.I enjoyed learning about the fate of Kate's family and why she is the last mermaid--even if it was tragic and heartbreaking. My favorite part of this book is when the light bulb over my head lit up when I realized that Kate's shop, called The Glass Mermaid because she collects sea glass and crafts jewelry from it could also refer to Kate herself, the last, so very alone and fragile mermaid. Poppy Lawless created a magical and beautiful story. The Glass Mermaid could easily be read in one sitting as you soak up some sun at the beach, lake, or poolside. It's the perfect summer romance, even if you don't daydream about being a mermaid.

By ltg584 Poppy Lawless may be a new name in Indie publishing, but her writing style feels so warm and comfortable, like she's been at it for years! In the span of a short story, she managed to tell such a full story, a perfectly sweet romance. The Glass Mermaid: A Falling in Deep Collection Novella, by Poppy Lawless
