Detective Gordon: The First Case, by Ulf Nilsson

From School Library Journal Gr 1–4—Detective Gordon is a portly toad who would much rather eat cake and drink tea than solve crimes. Alas, being the only policeman in the forest, he agrees to investigate the bothersome case of a squirrel's disappearing stockpile of nuts. While keeping watch over the crime scene, our hapless detective discovers a baby mouse in the act of stealing. Gordon soon realizes that she is not the actual thief but just very hungry. He takes her back to the police station and in short order, bestows upon her the name Buffy and deputizes her. Now working as a team, the two go on to solve the case and catch the crafty criminals. Translated from the original Swedish text, Nilsson offers one of those unique books that deliver age-appropriate content for young but advanced readers. This would also be a good choice for a read aloud in the classroom. The full-color illustrations add whimsy to the tale and perfectly complement this gentle read. VERDICT Hand this one to precocious readers who have graduated from early chapter books but aren't ready for too much strife in their novels.—Amy Nolan, St. Joseph Public Library, St. Joseph, MI

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Snow Falling In A Midnight Forest By Pop Bop For a moment just stop thinking what you're thinking about this book. This is an early reader mystery, but it's not just that. This is an animal-detective adventure, but it's not just that. This is a Harold-and-Maude buddy comedy, but it's not just that. This is loaded with expressive, pretty pastel drawings, but it's more than just that. Think of "Wind in the Willows" meets "Columbo" meets "Crime and Punishment", as related, while you sip cocoa, by your coolest, slyest, mellowest grandfather, and you'll start to get the idea.Detective Gordon, a toad, is a consummate professional, but age is catching up to him. He takes on Buffy, an energetic young mouse, as his policewoman assistant, and the two navigate a gentle mystery about some stolen nuts. Gordon is quiet and observant and his every act is calculated, unobtrusive and to the point. Buffy is just so excited to have a home and a purpose. In a few deft lines and with a few simple drawings their touching relationship is established. On each page there is at least one line of dialogue or a description that reads almost like poetry. There are little bits of business that illuminate character and set the proper mood. A glance or a sigh or a moment of quietness can communicate volumes. We reflect on the nature of crime and of punishment. Heck, by the time I finished this I had started to understand the Ingmar Bergman films I watched 40 years ago.It seems to me that this book, with its many and rich rewards, fits pretty nicely into that sadly underserved space between chapter books and more advanced fare. It can be read and understood at a basic picture book level, but also read and appreciated by a more advanced and adventurous reader. It struck me as a book that would be better as a read than a read-to, but I think that's because to me the gentle whimsy, reflection and puckish humor comes across better to a reader than a listener. But I could be all wet there, and I certainly wouldn't hesitate to read this to interested kids.Ulf Nilsson is widely celebrated in his native Sweden, has over 100 children's books and picture books to his credit, and is understandably the highly regarded head of the Swedish Academy for Children's Books. His touch in this book is consistent, restrained and enriched by generous good humor. This book is a marvelous find.(Please note that I received a free advance will-self-destruct-in-54-days Adobe ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

A charming Swedish import for primary grade readers and listeners By Janet Hamilton Summary: Detective Gordon is a toad who wants nothing more than to see crime and punishment eliminated from his district so he can drink tea and eat cakes in peace. When an agitated squirrel named Vladimir reports 204 stolen nuts from his treetop pantry, Gordon reluctantly investigates the case. In the process, he meets Buffy, a hungry, homeless mouse, and takes her in as an apprentice police officer. Working together, the two of them manage to crack the case, and the thieves manage to punish themselves. Grades 1-4.Pros: This Swedish import charms with gentle humor and cozy illustrations. The author (or translator) doesn’t shy away from vocabulary…the first chapter includes the words wretched, monstrous, plundering, and envious. This would be a good choice for a precocious first or second grade reader or a read-aloud in the primary grades.Cons: This book would definitely be a stretch for many in the intended age group

An older detective makes a young mouse, that is initially a suspect. his assistant after finding out his story. Together they work on solving the case of stolen nuts. There are alot of lessons learned in the book including very basic detective work. Geared more toward the early chapter book audience. Reviewed through Netgalley for Myrick Marketing and Media for an honest review.

Won Ton and Chopstick: A Cat and Dog Tale Told in Haiku, by Lee Wardlaw

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—In this charming sequel, a new puppy threatens the titular feline's idyllic existence in an enjoyable spin on the "adjusting to new baby" theme. As in Won Ton: A Cat Tale Told in Haiku (Holt, 2010), Wardlaw relates his tale through a series of senryu, short unrhymed lines of haiku containing a maximum of 17 syllables. This ancient form of Japanese poetry seeks to capture the essence of a moment, and Wardlaw uses it to humorous effect to capture Won Ton's horrified reaction to the new puppy, Chopstick. Won Ton defends his territory against the newcomer and acts out. There's an altercation at the dinner bowl: "Who. Ate. My. Dinner./Your eyes say "no-no," but your/breath brags of tuna." Yelchin's cartoony illustrations, using graphite and gouache on watercolor paper, convey Chopstick's wide-eyed innocence and Won Ton's prickly vulnerability. Though this is a stand-alone sequel, there are echoes of the first book, where readers learned that Won Ton's true name is Haiku; here, readers learn that Chopstick has a true name as well (hint: a famed haiku poet). Abundant wordplay and comic elements, such as Won Ton's repeated cry: "Puthimoutputhim/outputhimoutputhim—wait!/I said him, not me!" make this an enjoyable read-aloud. In the end, Won Ton discovers that he and the puppy have much in common: both enjoy rummaging through the garbage and cuddling with their boy. Peace is restored, and all ends happily. A wide audience of readers will be cheering Won Ton's return as well.—Marilyn Taniguchi, Beverly Hills Public Library, CA

They are so sparely written and yet they touch your soul with the playfulness, message of friendship (both human and animal), the sadness of living in a shelter, the fear of leaving the shelter because it is a known entity, and the joy coming to terms with an interloper and becoming friends.Especially loved the playful and ever-so-true words from Won Ton, "Letmeoutletmeoutletmeoutletmeout. Wait–let me back in!" Haven't we all gone through that with our cats?Eugene Yelchin's (Eugene is a Newbery Honoree-some people get ALL the talent) illustrations have movement, personality, and emotion. Lots of negative space highlights the movements of the animals. I loved one of the last pages in Won Ton and Chopstick where the little boy is cuddling both of his beloved animals. This illustration exudes joy and comfort and would be a comfort to the child in your life. These are a must read/peruse/enjoy for animal lovers everywhere. Great job!

Purr-fect for Kids By Amy Shojai, CABC A couple of years ago, I was sent a review copy of WON TON: A Cat Tale Told in Haiku when the book first launched in 2011. I don’t have kids (other than furry ones with four paws), but was so impressed I wrote a glowing 5-star review. This book is a moving, powerful story of one cat’s adoption, told through the “voice” of a shelter cat. The gorgeous illustrations by Eugene Yelchin perfectly capture the cat’s perspective of shelter life, car ride to new home, and experiences adjusting to his adoptive family: Nice place they got here. Bed. Bowl. Blankie. Just like home! Or so I’ve been told.Lee Wardlaw writes the text in senryu, a form of Japanese poetry similar to Haiku, which gives the cat’s tale a playful, poignant or humorous tone. The cat pretends not to care about being adopted, yet of course yearns for a forever home. "Please, Boy, pick me." And once chosen and named Won Ton, the cautious cat must learn to trust enough to share his real name, and heart.Won Ton and Chopstick is the SEQUEL I have been waiting for this–it’s a subject very close to my heart, and addresses introducing new pets to resident ones–in this case a new puppy to the cat. This new delightful book is perfect for parents and kids. WON TON and CHOPSTICK, A Cat and Dog Tale Told in Haiku offers the cat’s perspective when faced with a (hiss!) interloper.Lee asked her publisher to send me an advanced reader’s edition and I will treasure this–it is everything I hoped and more. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book! Won Ton has a happy life with his boy, until. . . Ears perk. Fur prickles. Belly low, I creep . . . peek . . . FREEZE! My eyes full of Doom. Both of these lovely books belong in every cat lover’s library, especially when you have children. The first book WON TON humorously educates children to basic cat behaviors and emotions, teaches empathy, and celebrates the gift of saving a life, while offering a snapshot of a shelter cat’s journey from a cage to finally embracing his new life and family with trust and love. The second book WON TON and CHOPSTICK continues the “tail” with glee, humor and gentle insight of how resident pets feel about new pets puthimoutputhimoutputhimout but how with care all can be respected and learn to accept each other…."I shall call you…Friend."I would love to send these books home with every new pet adoption. I cannot recommend these books highly enough.--Amy Shojai, CABC, pet expert and author 30 pet care/behavior books

The poetry is never predictable, but always surprises with its fun language and playful phrase turns. Eugene Yelchin's illustrations are equally impressive. Seemingly simple, but I know better. Each character has a distinct and mischievous persona. This isn't just for dog and cat lovers (though they will gobble it up!) or poetry fans or whomever. This book is for everyone!

Long ago, a band of heroes sailed to a new land, carrying with them a priceless artifact and fleeing the wrath of a terrible dragon. Many generations later, another group of heroes buried another dragon, made of steel and circuitry, in the depths of the earth, hoping it would never be found. But now, archaeologists looking for the remains of ancient Hun warriors have stumbled upon one of the deadliest secrets of the modern age. Against his better judgment, not knowing why, unlikely secret agent Chase Creighton - seemingly an ordinary working-class American with a seemingly ordinary family-based life - finds himself catapulted into a dangerous multi-continental quest to find an ancient treasure and a modern weapon that have more to do with each other than meets the eye. As the search leads from the underground rivers of Slovenia to the arid plains of the Sahara to the corridors of a massive Siberian temple, Chase finds that he may hold the key to stopping a fiendish plan and solving a mystery that has overshadowed his whole life. Two civilizations will die in dragonfire, unless Chase and his comrades can find the source of - and perhaps the cure for - the most fearsome disease of our time: the Golden Plague.

Like most lawyers, I have had others attach labels to me over the years, including: a. the baby faced assassin b. the lawyer to get when you don’t want to deal with a lawyer c. the ‘www’ (why the wealthy win) guy The one that has meant the most to me was coined by a small business operator I helped guarantee she survived and ultimately prospered during a difficult start up phase. She called me ‘The Dream Enabler’. This book shares many of the key learnings I have been fortunate to discover while having unprecedented access to some of Australia’s most successful people.

The Dream Enabler, by Matthew Burgess

About the Author Matthew Burgess is one of the four directors and founders of specialist firm View Legal. Having the opportunity to help clients achieve their goals is what he is most passionate about. As Matthew always works in conjunction with trusted advisers (whether it be accountants, financial advisers or other lawyers) and their clients, finding ways to fundamentally improve the value received by those advisers, and in turn their clients, has led him to develop numerous game changing models. Examples include providing guaranteed upfront fixed pricing, founding what is widely regarded as Australia's first virtual law firm, and more recently, developing a platform that gives advisers access to market leading advice and support for less than $1 a week. Matthew's specialisation in tax, structuring, asset protection, estate and succession planning has seen him recognised by most leading industry associations including the Tax Institute, the Weekly Tax Bulletin and in the 2014 'Best Lawyers' list for trusts and estates. Work is one aspect of his life Matthew loves, so there is no need to be constantly searching for 'balance'. His other great loves are: 1 Family - they are profiled in various ways through the series of children's books he has written under the pseudonym 'Lily Burgess' - seewww.wordsfromdaddysmouth.com.au and various TV commercials (which is a story for another time); 2 Learning - going cold Turkey on television and most forms of media in late 2005 (the reasons for this are a story for another time) has radically increased Matthew's ability to study the great authors and inspired him to recently publish a book that explores the concept of 'true success' - seewww.thedreamenabler.com.au 3 Health - aside from being a foodie and swimming at least a 5km a week, Matthew installed a stand up workstation in 2007 and among a few other lifestyle choices, it changed his life (again, stories for another time).

But It's Not My Fault! (Responsible Me!), by Julia Cook

Review But It's Not My Fault is a cheery, quirky, color illustrated story about Noodle, a boy who gets into trouble but has so many excuses he can't take responsibility for his own behavior. Written in peppy verse and powered by active pictures of children of different racial backgrounds in everyday situations, But It's Not My Fault deals with the blame game especially as played by kids. There are many moments of humor, some times of thinking, and lots of careful reflecting in the pages of "But It's Not My Fault." I can't say enough about them except I think these books should be mandatory for all teachers! I love how simple the books are to read and she always gives good advice at the end on how to incorporate the coping mechanisms. I am an Occupational Therapist, single mother of 2 girls ages 8 and 10, and a Girl Scout leader to two troops. Julia Cook's book have helped me explain to my "kids" emotional and physical "conditions" in a non-judgmental and inspiring way. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND ALL OF HER BOOKS!!!!! I also recommend you get her accompanying workbook for teachers which she has produced for several of her products. Our favorite books from Julia Cook: My Mouth is Like a Volcano (I only have to say "volcano" to my "kids" and they know they need to wait before interrupting my conversation; it's great having a "code" word so as not to "embarrass" the kids in front of others); It Isn't Easy Being a Verb (my youngest has ADHD - great resource for her); Melvin the Molar (the importance of good oral hygiene); Decibela (inside vs outside voice). I also highly recommend the book Making Friends is an Art, which was co-authored with another person (I believe). All the teachers, and pediatric OT's, I have shared these books with have gone out and immediately purchased and have used with good success. If I could give Julia Cook's books a 10/5 rating, I would. You will NOT be disappointed!!!!

It was exactly what I looking for for my 6th grader who thinks everything is someone else's fault. It was an easy read, but not to babyish for a 12 yr old boy yo understand the point. Great, fun read!
