The Boy & the Book: [a wordless story], by David Michael Slater

Review *A nearly wordless picture book presents the "I can read" moment.A small boy with a determined, mischievous expression enters a library in the company of his mother. The look on the boy's face, perfectly rendered by Kolar (as are all the expressions), alarms the library books, and they run for their lives. The boy captures a blue-bound book and begins manhandling it as he would any toy, in the process ripping and creasing the pages. The other books look on, horrified. The boy's mother (who, unsettlingly, seems to care not a whit that the boy has mistreated a book) comes to get him. He tosses the book to the floor as he leaves. The other books lovingly glue and tape the battered book back together. A new day, and—horrors!—the boy returns. Again, the books scatter. But then the blue-bound book sees the boy's forlorn expression and suddenly understands. The book leaps from its safe perch to the boy, the boy opens the book, and it is here that the four words of text make their powerful statement—"Once upon a time." For the boy has learned to read, and now books are cherished and library manners learned.Presented as a grand adventure, the moment when a child first learns to read is powerfully rendered in this well-made story. -Kirkus Reviews, *starred reviewSlater's (The Bored Book) wordless story seems headed toward a lesson about mistreating library books, but the lesson turns out to be one of surprising compassion. The book abuser is a young library visitor with a mop of black hair who grabs a blue book while the others flee (all of the books have expressive faces and sticklike appendages). A question mark above the boy's head as he opens the book signals his non-reader status. Instead, he holds it upside down, rips it, tosses it, and folds the pages, accompanied by anguished looks from the book itself. On a return visit, the book's efforts to avoid the boy are futile, and he strikes again. But then something wonderful happens: the boy learns to read, and he and the book are reconciled. Kolar's (Stomp, Stomp!) digitally made figures are crisp and flat, and the expressions on the books' faces do their comic work effectively. Library champions don't usually tolerate the ill-treatment of books, but sometimes, Slater implies, what looks like bad behavior is just boundless eagerness.-Publishers Weekly

About the Author David Michael Slater's seventeen picture books include Cheese Louise (Walrus Books, 1999), The Ring Bear (Flashlight, 2004), Jacques & Spock (Clarion, 2004), and Flour Girl (Magic Wagon, 2007). The Bored Book (Simply Read Books, 2009) was reviewed positively in the New York Times. David's ongoing teen fantasy series Sacred Books (CBAY, 2008-present), is being developed for film, and his hilarious comic novel for adults Fun & Games (Library Tales, 2013), received raves from the New York Journal of Books. David teaches middle school in Reno, Nevada, where he lives with his wife and son.

We picked up another book in this series, Goodnight Pirate but one sharp-eyed girl spotted Goodnight Princess on the back cover and demanded we order it.Like Goodnight Pirate this is a riff on Goodnight Moon, a young girl gradually says goodnight to her toys, dresses and princess fantasies and finally goes to bed. It's a quick and fun read, not much there for parents, but girls who are of the 'princess' age will like it.

What could top the #1 best-selling photography book of all time?

We’re talking about the award-winning, worldwide smash hit, written by Scott Kelby, that’s been translated into dozens of different languages, because it’s the one book that really shows you how to take professional-quality shots using the same tricks today’s top digital pros use.

Well, what if you took that book, created four more just like it but with even more tips, plucked out only the best tips from all five of THOSE books, updated the images, referenced all-new gear, and added a completely new chapter on how to make the transition from shooting photos with your phone to making photographs with your new DSLR?

In The Best of The Digital Photography Book, you’ll find all of Scott’s favorite tips and techniques curated and updated from The Digital Photography Book, Parts 1-5, along with a brand new chapter  on transitioning from your phone to a full-fledged DSLR. You’ll find everything that made the first five titles a success: Scott answering questions, giving out advice, and sharing the secrets he’s learned just like he would with a friend–without all the technical explanations and techie photo speak. This book will help you shoot dramatically better-looking, sharper, more colorful, more professional-looking photos every time.

Ehe Best of Digital Photography By Al Kunz The book entitled ‘The Best of the Digital Photography Book Series: is a compilation of a five book series written by Scott Kelby a couple of years ago. In this volume he has taken what he considers to be the best content from the five previous books. The purpose of this book is to equip the amateur photographer with the knowledge that a pro photographer would employ in a similar photo situation. At the outset, I must tell you that this is a volume packed with useful information presented in a concise format that makes it easy to read and to later retrieve information. Let’s look at the hard facts first. This book is smaller than most, measuring 6 in. by 9 in. It is a soft covered book of 268 pages, well suited to inclusion in your camera bag and after you read and digest the information within (that’s where you will want to put this book). As of this writing it retails on Amazon for $14.99. It is rated at a Beginner level however, I would include Intermediate as well. It consists of 14 Chapters, each covering a major facet of digital photography. I won’t belabor you with the names of all those facets but it includes chapters on Flash, Lenses, Portraits, Weddings, Sports, Landscape and so on.The book is unique in that each chapter consists of a series of one page fact sheets. That is, Kelby takes one subject relevant to the chapter, includes a picture illustration and the rest of the page is text concerning the page subject. For example, page 28 in the chapter entitled “The Truth About Lenses” is labeled “When to Use a Wide Angle Lens”. It contains a picture of a typical wide angle lens and the rest of the page contains text relating to a wide angle lens, its description and its uses. The next page covers a different lens and its uses. It’s a unique style to cover a vast subject like Digital Photography but I found it very successful. It presents a particular subject, displays it, and then describes it and its uses in a concise and no nonsense fashion. It fosters quick learning and makes future reference much easier as well. It’s just the facts with little extraneous material to get through. Each chapter ranges from 15 to 25 pages in length. It makes this book a fast reader and one that the reader can put down or pick up with little loss of place.Kelby also provides a web site on which he posts videos illustrating some of the Photoshop processes described in the book. After reading the book in its entirety, I went on the website. I was fairly well disappointed when several of the videos provided played without any accompanying audio. You could see the cursor going here and there on the screen but nothing audible described what was happening. The thought occurred to me that this was not a very good policy for Kelby to tout this web site only to find it partially crippled. I decided to follow this up and went on the Kelbyone website and managed to speak to a Customer Service agent. I described to her what I had found. She looked at the same site and confirmed my findings and stated the she would contact the technical folks to get it repaired. I asked if she would get back to me so that I could view the site contents when it was operating properly. Within an hour or two she sent me a message that the problem with the audio was cleared and thanked me for bringing it to their attention. It does a soul good when you experience a session with a person that works in “Customer Service” and that person lives up to every letter in that title. In summary, if you want a book that provides a bundle of information concerning the many aspects of Digital Photography and does so in a concise manner, this is your book. It is chock full of useful information that will greatly benefit the average digital photographer. As a bonus, the book can accompany the photographer in a camera bag for ready reference in the field. As stated previously, it is also backed by a willing and competent Customer Service organization. All that for about 15 bucks. What a deal!

His Digital Photography series is a constant "Go-To Companion" and this book is his "Best of the Best".I would rate my photography skills as "advanced intermediate", (probably a 6-handicap for those of you talking in golf terms), and Scott's style is simple, comprehensive and mixes in his sense of humor - something I appreciate. If you ever saw a photo and wondered how it was done, this book is for you!

I have been learning from him for years and I have most of his books on Photoshop and Lightroom.

She is a playful learner - if I sit down with a book teaching her about letters or numbers or languages, she'll immediately tell me she's bored. Understandably. Anyway, she's completely obsessed with learning about birthdays lately, so I decided to purchase an ebook since our library's selection was incredibly limited. Finally, I decided to try "The Totally True Story of Jack and His Happy Birthday". It seemed to have all the elements of a good story, especially through the eyes of my preschooler. Cute dog? Check. Silly dog? Check. Birthday story? Check.I'm happy to say that this book offered so much more than I expected. Not only did we learn about birthdays, but she was literally laughing out loud at the photos of the dogs. I was excited because the book teaches children about different languages and how people (err, dogs) say "Happy Birthday" around the world. This book spawned a lot of discussion of people and places and we're now learning about France, China, and Germany thanks to this book.

It is funny and the pictures of all the dogs was adorable. Cousin Chester was smiling when he was upside down! I thought it was cool to learn how to say Happy Birthday in all those languages. It was really sweet of them to include Uncle Bucky since his birthday was soon. This was a funny, fun book!I am the seven year olds mother and I loved this book too! I was immediately smiling because of the photographs of the dogs, all different kinds in all different positions. My kids think Jack is perfect, now I have to explain that Jack really can’t surf the net, can he? Truthfully it is refreshing to read a book with my children and not have to edit or skip pages or text. This was simple, educational, clean fun. Fun for the whole family and that is a rare find these days. Plus you can impress your friends when you say Happy Birthday in Russian! I would recommend this book to anyone who loves dogs, cats and Birthdays!

I enjoyed this book and liked the different family members from other countries saying ‘Happy Birthday’ in other languages. My favourite page was page nine when Aunt Katie didn’t laugh and Uncle Simon laughed and the picture was really funny and also my second favourite page was page twelve because it was really cute when Rex sat on a hat and it was stuck there! And also page 14 when the cats had ‘photobombed’ the pictures! This book was unique and so much fun to read and the perfect gift for my little brother who is having his Birthday tomorrow. I can’t wait to read it to him. This is one of my favourite books and I know it will make anyone happy and would be great for everyone and anyone.

I think his previous book, There's Nothing To Do On Mars, is probably among the best children's books ever written. The one before that, Dear Fish, is excellent too. And his first book, America the Beautiful, has very nice illustrations. After that progression from good to great to phenomenal, I have been eagerly waiting for this next book. But after reading it several times over a few weeks, I'm disappointed. It's a good book, and my kids do enjoy it. Some of the illustrations are fun. But it just doesn't approach the levels of his previous two books. Here's what I found disappointing:1) The illustrations. I love the illustrations in all of his previous books. I can look at them over and over, and scrutinize the details, and I never get tired of it. My kids never get tired of them either. But the illustrations in this book just don't grab me much. A few of them are interesting, but none are as interesting as his previous work.2) The story. Yes it's an interesting concept. But it's not fleshed out very well. And it just doesn't work that well, at least for kids the age of mine (5 and 3). I have to explain over and over, and it never seems to really interest them. Their reaction is more like they find it weird and strange -- and a little boring -- than really interesting and fun. Again, these are kids that LOVE this author's previous books. They also love dinosaurs, and like trucks.Once it's time to return it to the library, I have no plans to buy it, and I'm pretty sure my kids won't ask for it. So his previous two books, which we do own, will get read many more times while we wait for his next book after this one.I'm all in favor of an artist exploring new ground. The artistic style of his first three books were all fairly similar, and if he felt the need to branch out, I certainly don't begrudge him that. But whatever he tries next, I hope works better than this.UPDATE:It's now been a few months since it went back to the library, and the kids haven't mentioned it. That says it all. Meanwhile, they have asked for the author's previous books for bedtime reading.Chris Gall is obviously capable of making excellent childrens' books, and I look forward to his next effort after this.

Stones This has been the nonstop nightly read for my son and his older sister since we picked it up last month. Cute story, wonderful illustrations, hilarious names for the dinotrux. We often go back to look at one page and talk about the trucks on that page. Volcanoes, lava, cavemen, flattened snakes, bodily fluids, trucks, dinosaurs. . .Heaven for a 3 year old boy!INSTANT CLASSIC!

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Keep on Truxin' By E. R. Bird Once in a while a picture book author will mix dinosaurs in with another popular genre. The logic behind this is clear. If dinos sell and trains sell, why not write something like All Aboard the Dinotrain? As a result, dinosaurs have been mixed together with everything from bedtime stories (How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?) to ballet (T. Rex at Swan Lake). One mixed-pair that hasn't really happened before, as far as I know, is trucks and dinosaurs. I can just see various authors pondering the possibilities. Would the dinosaurs drive the trucks? Would the trucks be designed with different dinosaurs painted onto them? But where's the story? I mean the only way dinosaurs could really be combined with trucks would be if they were . . . were . . . were actually physically COMBINED with them! Trust author/illustrator Chris Gall to make that final leap in logic. His Dinotrux strikes a slightly younger chord than his previous picture book outings (Dear Fish and There's Nothing to Do on Mars), but kids and parents of all ages will take pleasure in the sheer amount of thought and creativity the man had to work up to come up with names like Dumploducus or Rollodon. They were here long ago. When the world was a vast wild place, dinotrux ruled. They are the ancestors of the gentle benign trucks we know today, and their ways were harsh and strange. If a caveman wasn't running for his life from the dangerous (and incredibly fast) Semisaur then he was trying to avoid a Cementosaurus's smelly leavings. It was the world of the Craneosaurus, the Blacktopadon, and the ever terrible Tyrannosaurus Trux. Of course that was before the great flash of light and terrible storm. Dinotrux rusted and sank into the mud, while a few managed to escape southward into warmer climates. Since that time they have domesticated, and the remains of the old Dinotrux are dug up at the oddest of times. Now only one things is certain. Dinotrux are always on the job. "And they never, EVER quit!"The trux themselves are rather clever. Gall has figured out the logistics between combining the reptilian with the industrial. He has considered such details as how a Craneosaurus or a Garbageadon would eat. And I don't think any adult who sees the two-page spread of brown Deliveradons asleep in a lazy pile won't instantly think of UPS and late deliveries. Gall clearly studied up on both dinos and actual trucks to get the right feel for his mechanical monstrosities. There's a lot of repetition in the pictures as well. The three primary cavepeople who appear in the past are reimagined as contemporary humans when we see one of the final shots in the book. The endpapers too show some nice differences between now and then. On one page you will see trucks as normal, dull, standard entities, sitting without much flair or show. On the opposite page those trucks appear once again, only now in their newly dinotruxed state. Kids will have quite a bit of fun matching one truck to another and then, presumably, finding the dino-like similarities in trucks in the real world.I think this might mark the first time I've ever seen a cheeky publication page. Sometimes a book's design will incorporate its serial number in an amusing fashion, but this was the very first time I looked to see what the illustrations were made of only to read, "The text was set in Cafeteria Black, and the display type is hand-lettered. The artwork for this book was created using bearskins and stone knives." Below those words you can see a caveman carving the Little, Brown and Company logo into the side of a boulder. If we can assume that Mr. Gall hasn't changed his style any then it this book could be a mix of engravings, paint, and ink. It's hard to know, though. At the very least the pictures in Dinotrux are filled with movement, action, and shifting perspectives. There's a black, almost dusty fog that lies over the prints, giving this prehistoric world the feeling that it's engulfed in truck-tastic soot and smoke. Believable. The text is also rhythmic and bouncy. You can't help but like a sentence that says "they shed their teeth and their toenails and their misbehaving ways." Interestingly Gall has chosen to pepper his pictures with exclamations by the routinely fleeing cavepeople. Some of these work better than others, suggesting that they were a last minute additions. For example, while the Caveman saying "Yuck" when trapped in dinotrux muck makes sense, the next page shows two cavepeople cooking a fish with hugely worried looks on their faces. The text below them reads, "Let's have a barbecue!" which is a doggone cheery thing to see under two such worried souls.Craziest argument you're going to hear when this book is looked at? It's twofold. I suspect that some parents will believe that this book will twist their young children's minds, causing them to think that dinotrux really used to exist millions of years ago. And maybe that'll be true for the odd child here and there. Fun fact: They'll get over it. Seriously. Kids are savvy critters, and a lot of them are going to accept this book for what it is: fun. Besides, do kids read Babar and then assume that all elephants wear spats? I don't think so. The second objection whipping about in the future? I can actually hear someone saying that this book promotes the mistaken belief that dinosaurs and cavemen existed at the same time. It's patently ridiculous since there are no dinosaurs even in the book. Zippo, zero, zilch. I mean, these are probably going to be the same parents who let their kids watch The Flintstones, and isn't THAT just a hotbed of historically accurate fact finding? So if you've objections on either counts here, lay them to rest. I can't acknowledge either. As strange as it sounds, this book may act as a perfect complement to Jon Scieszka's Trucktown series. In both cases the artists working on the books had to figure out the logistics involved in adding eyeballs and personalities to welded bits of steel and rubber. And Dinotrux is perfect for that kid who wants trucks and dinosaurs just a little more dangerous than usual. It's not the usual dino-laden title out there, a fact that will definitely serve Dinotrux well in the future. Fine, frightening, fun, fantastic fare.

Warriors: The New Prophecy #3: Dawn, by Erin Hunter

From Booklist Gr. 6-9. The third book in Warriors: The New Prophecy series finds the four clans being driven from their territories as the "Twolegs" relentlessly denude the forest with their huge machines. The small band of cats that undertook a quest for the StarClan returns home with a new mission: to persuade all the clans to unify for a long, dangerous journey to a new home. The feline characters remain true to their natures, and, as expected, the danger level is high. Fans will relish this eminently satisfying episode in a series rooted in Hunter's first Warriors novel, Into the Wild (2002). Sally EstesCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

This new addition has given readers no more or less then they expected; a completely staisfying read, DAWN follows the five remaining heros and Leafpaw exactly where we left off. The book begins with a shattering discovery; the Twolegs, who had been destroying the forest at alarming rates, cut down the fourtrees. Every Clan, already weakened by starvation, took this as a sign that Starclan had deserted them. Then Brambleclaw, Squirrelpaw, Tawnypelt, Crowpaw, and Stormfur return, bringing hope and news that not all the Clans accept. Leopardstar in particular refuses to leave the forest when the Twolegs have gone nowhere near her territory.Meanwhile, ThunderClan has more pressing matters to deal with. It soon becomes apparent that Brambleclaw is not the only one with strange dreams; Squirrelpaw, after a night-time visit by Spottedleaf, she and a patrol of ThunderClan cats are able to rescue Leafpaw, Cloudtail, and the other trapped Clan cats (including a kittypet that just might become one). Unfourtunantly, their victory is not unhindered; they lose Graystripe to the Twolegs. Finally, all the clans agree to travel together. With the help of 'a dying warrior' - though not the sort anycat expected - the cats, now one bedraggled clan, make their way over the mountains. It's great to see the characters mature, and the relationship between Brambleclaw and Squirrelpaw is predictable but heartwarming. There is also the reappearance of the Tribe of Rushing Water, first seen in MOONRISE, and of Brook, a tribe she-cat that stole Stormfur's heart. Together the Clan cats face death, love, loss, and struggle with loyalties. Hope is a big theme this book; the hope of the Clan cats, struggling as they never have before to find a place where they belong and can reside in peace. I cannot reccomend it more highly.

Dawn By Sis As usual with the Warriors books, Dawn picks up right where Moonrise left off: The questing cats are just now returning home with their news that the four Clans must leave their forest home in search of a new one. But many things are holding them back, including the fact that three ThunderClan cats have been taken by Twolegs, including Squirrelpaw's sister Leafpaw. As the Twolegs destroy more and more of the forests, the Clans reluctantly realize that they have to work together and search for a new home as one Clan. You get Squirrelpaw and Leafpaw's point of view from this book, which is good, because you finally get to see that Squirrelpaw really is one of the questing cats, and not just the annoying appentice that she was in previous books. Her relationship with Brambleclaw, which blossomed all the way back in Midnight, grows more in this book. There is also more about the rest of the ThunderClan cats that were so important in the previous series and were before just background in The New Prophecy. Also, Firestar makes a comeback from the father figure he was turned into in Midnight. In Dawn you get to see more of the hero that he was as the main character in the first series. The Tribe cats also return, and a new kittypet character, a friend of Leafpaw's, is introduced here. All in all, Dawn is the best of the New Prophecy series, and I recommend as much as any of the other Warriors book. Like many others, I'm now awaiting Starlight, the next book in the series.

I mean literally, I think Im the first person in my hometown to read, if not get, this book. i was posed at the bookstore at nine o clock. well, anyway this was an amazing book. second only to the darkest hour, the explorers come back with the news that thaey have to leave. everybody in thunderclan was more than willing, but they still felt the rifts between the clan strongly and they risked leaving certain cats behind. leafpaw is trapped in a cage, and squirrelpaw will risk anything to get her out. a certain cat is lost and may be dead or turned into a kittypet! i felt like i wanted to kill those people 4 destroying the forest becaus erin hunter did such a good job portraying the feelings of these cats. so please, get this book. you'll love it!
