In Doyli to the Rescue: Saving Baby Monkeys in the Amazon, 10-year-old Doyli, with the help of her family, rescues endangered, orphaned monkeys from the perils of native hunters and the black market. She carries the rescued animals home to her island home in the Peruvian Amazon, where she nurtures them with her strong medicine of love and nourishing food.

When the little monkey orphans are old enough and strong enough, she releases them back to their natural habitat: the Amazon rainforest.

This is the first book in Burnham's WAKA (World Association of Kids and Animals) series, photodocumentary books for young readers that highlight wildlife preservation efforts being undertaken by kids around the globe. The stories of personal commitment and environmental activism in projects led by youngsters offer inspiration to all who work to protect animals and preserve their habitats.

The author visited young Doyli and Doyli's family and school on a trip taken with Burnham's own kids. Together with her family, Burnham travels the world meeting extraordinary, real children saving animals. The WAKA series (additional books to be released this year) shows how people of all ages can work together to save Earth's most endangered animals.

There is a free teacher's guide available at the WAKA series website: WAKABooks.org.

Doyli Shows Kids Can Make a Difference By Stephanie Golightly Lowden “The Yagua Indian man crept through the Amazon rain forest…hunting a family of red howler monkeys. If he was successful, his family would eat meat that day. If not, they would go hungry.”When Cathleen Burnham’s family took a vacation in the Amazon, it was just the beginning of a longer story about how kids can save a little part of the world. As her family traveled down the Amazon River , Burnham spotted a hut surrounded by playful monkeys. When the tour guide told them “The family that lives there takes in orphaned…monkeys,” she begged to visit. Once there, they met Doyli, a ten-year old girl, who helps save baby monkeys and release them back into the wild. How the three stories of the Yagua, the American and the young girl intersect gives the reader a fascinating look into the lives of the people of the Amazon rain forest. Doyli lives in Peru , as does the hunter. He must feed his family, but when he kills a mother monkey he finds a baby left behind. He takes the youngster to Doyli, knowing that the young girl will feed and shelter the baby until he is old enough to be set free. What I found important about this book is the writer does not judge the Yagua hunter. He must feed his family, that is a given. But he understands that when a mother monkey is killed and a baby left behind, the cycle of life must be protected. He knows that with Doyli, there is shelter for the young monkey. There is, however, a dark side to the story. One day, Doyli and her uncle visit the public market, where Doyli spots a man selling a baby monkey. She knows that thieves kill monkey parents and then take the babies to sell at the market. Doyli tells her uncle and he informs the police. The man is arrested and the baby he was trying to sell is given to Doyli to be cared for. This is a beautifully photographed book with an important story that shows readers you don’t have to be a grown-up to make a difference. In the author’s note, Burnham explains that there is an organization, the World Association of Kids and Animals (WAKA), that shares the stories of children, like Doyli, who are helping to protect animals all over the world. Burnham says she’s interviewed many children with stories similar to Doyli. I look forward to reading those stories in the near future. If you’d like more information about WAKA visit www.WAKABooks.orgReview by Stephanie Golightly Lowden

By Renee @ Mother Daughter Book Reviews My son's review - he's 8!This book is about a girl, Doyli, who saves monkeys in the Amazon forest in Peru. There is also lots information and pictures that show what life is like in the Amazon forest. The photos were good and the monkeys were adorable. My favorites were the ones of the animals and the forest. I really liked the part where the monkey thief gets caught by the police and they put him in jail. I liked learning about Doyli and how she rescues monkeys. It seems like living in the Amazon can be dangerous because there are snakes and caimans and jaguars and that there are a lot of monkeys. They travel in canoes on the Amazon and they get their water from the Amazon. I also learned about how they are cutting down all of the trees in the Amazon and that is a very bad thing. The book also says that sometimes the kids can’t afford to go to school. That’s sad.It was a very interesting book. I like books about facts and especially books about animals, but I don’t like it when they mix facts with a story. I think monkeys would like this book – just kidding! I think kids who are young like, younger than me, and their parents would like this book (and people who like monkeys).

The new edition of this classic text covers the latest developments in American gun policy, including shooting incidents plaguing the American landscape - especially Sandy Hook, the Colorado theatre shootings and the tragic death of Trayvon Martin - placing them in context with similar recent events. The incidents described in the book sparked a wave of gun control legislation at local, state and national levels, some of which was successful, some doomed and all controversial. At the national level, President Obama put his political capital on the line to push for new gun control measures, only to see them shot down by Congress. Robert J. Spitzer has long been a recognised authority on gun control and gun policy. His even-handed treatment of the issue - as both a member of the NRA and the Brady Center - continues to compel national and international interest, including interviews by the likes of Terry Gross, Tom Ashbrook and Diane Rehm. This sixth edition of The Politics of Gun Control provides the reader with up-to-date data and coverage of gun ownership, gun deaths, school shootings, border patrols and new topics including social media, stand-your-ground laws, magazine regulation, and shooting-related mental health initiatives.

The poetry and the message is beautiful ("Peace is gratitude for simple things...."). The book presents many simple examples for ways that people can show concern and caring for each other (comforting each other, laughing together and enjoying each other's company, tending to those who are hurt or in need) in a very age appropriate way for young children (the beautiful illustrations show children walking away from a fight, comforting a younger sibling, hearing their mom/dad read a book). The book touches upon loss, grief, and sadness, without dwelling on it, by showing that even in the worst of times, "the helpers" are there if you look for them. There is always kindness and beauty mixed in with the sadness. One of my favorite books!

I don't usually purchase children's books online when they omit sample pages but I've taken a chance on this one and a few others recently and am happy I made that decision. The illustrations are colorful and appealing, the characters are very diverse and inclusive, and the message is simple and uplifting. It's not really a story with a plot; the emphasis is how to obtain peace within ourselves by helping and being there for others in a variety of ways. There are examples of small, tangible offerings (a muffin or peach), positive actions (spending time with others), and gratitude for simple things (a kiss on the cheek). There is a very brief mention of tragedy and ways we can still find peace in those difficult times. It's an exemplary and profound work that makes a perfect gift for those you care about.Aside from that, Amazon did not package this well and several of the items in this shipment were damaged from their negligence. This book had a minor tear on the outer cover but was otherwise in good condition. Some of the other books/products were not as lucky. If you are purchasing for a gift, you may want to be sure the rest of your order will be compatible with their subpar packaging.

This is a beautiful book with a beautiful theme of creating peace By Ann This is a beautiful book with a beautiful theme of creating peace, and seeing that being a peacemaker consists of many everyday actions. The illustrations are wonderful, and I love that the all the characters are of various races, ethnicities, backgrounds, etc. I bought it for my 5 year old niece, but after reading it I decided to wait to give it to her for another year or two. While the overall theme is a wonderful reflection on peace, there are a few pages in the middle that seemed a little heavy or dark, as they mention dealing with "tragedy" and "sorrow of your darkest hour" and "in the loss of a friend." This would be a great book for those children who are struggling to understand a violent occurrence or death, in that it doesn't dwell on those difficulties but mentions them briefly in the context of a larger understanding of peace. As a final note, I bought this book looking for a children's book with a Christian theme to give my God children. Though there is no mention of religion whatsoever, I found it consistent with progressive Christian views and values.

An insightful and practical guide to family trusts

Family Trusts is a step-by-step guide for anyone involved in family trusts: trust creators, trustees, beneficiaries, and advisors. It will help families create and administer a culture that recognizes trusts as a gift of love.

Marrying the practical and emotional aspects of family wealth, this book provides a hands-on primer that focuses on fostering positive relationships, and structuring the trust appropriately for the situation and the people involved. It tackles difficult topics with frank and honest discussion, from the first beneficiary meeting to working with addictions, and more. Written by a team of experts in family wealth, this information is becoming increasingly crucial to the successful execution of a trust; you'll learn what type of person makes the best trustee, how to be an excellent beneficiary, and the technical aspects that help you build a better trust from the very beginning.

There's been a staggering increase in trustee/beneficiary litigation and hostility, but that doesn't mean it's inevitable. Plenty of trusts are running smoothly, with positive experiences on all sides. This book shows you how to set up your trust to succeed from the start, with step-by-step guidance and expert insight.

  • Express clear and thoughtful intent for the trust
  • Create a healthy and supportive culture
  • Select the right trustee, trust protector, and trust advisor
  • Take the time to prepare before initially meeting the beneficiary
  • Conduct a productive first meeting to set a tone for the relationship

Historically, there has been little consideration given to the culture of trusts, and this oversight may be a key driver of the behavior that's becoming more prevalent. Family Trusts explores the nature of these relationships, and shows you how to build a trust that retains the nature and spirit with which it was intended.

Family Trusts: A Guide for Beneficiaries, Trustees, Trust Protectors, and Trust Creators (Bloomberg), by Hartley Goldstone, James E. Hughes Jr., Keith Whitaker

From the Inside Flap

A trust is a not a document or a receptacle. It is a relationship, aimed at benefiting someone's life. Why, then, do 80 percent of trust beneficiaries view their trusts as burdens and not blessings? The authors believe that lack of attention to the human realities of trusts is to blame. Family Trusts challenges the disappointing status quo with new recommendations for building trusts that preserve the hopes of their creators and support the dreams of their beneficiaries.

Most trusts are formed to save taxes, protect against creditors, and exert control over property. As important as these largely quantitative goals are, they ignore and often impede trusts' qualitative possibilities. This revolutionary guide lays out sound practices for trustees, trust protectors, and trust creators to develop flourishing beneficiaries. It shows trustees how to manage their fiduciary risks by taking concrete steps to get to know beneficiaries and address their concerns. It also opens the eyes of beneficiaries and trust creators to the higher purpose that trusts can achieve, where dynamic distributions promote beneficiary growth and independence rather than perpetuate a "trust-fund baby" distribution-dependency. Whether your trust is already established or you're planning to create trusts, this deeply practical guide shows you how to:

  • Communicate clearly and effectively with beneficiaries at various stages of their development and at various stages in the trust's own life
  • Make prudent distributions to promote beneficiaries' growth
  • Thoughtfully prepare for the creation of new trusts or the termination of old ones
  • Restructure the roles of trustee and trust protector to manage risk and reduce the likelihood of conflict

Wherever you are in the trustscape, you can have a more rewarding experience with Family Trusts.

From the Back Cover

"The Anglo-American trust is an ancient principles-based regime that will survive into the 21st century only so long as it is administered by persons of principle. As a practical matter, what does that mean? Family Trusts does an admirable job of answering that question, and in prose that will be readily understandable not only to the trust professional but also to the family member new to the 'trustscape.'"

—CHARLES E. ROUNDS, Jr., Professor of Law, Suffolk University Law School, and co-author of Loring and Rounds: A Trustee's Handbook

Is Your Trust a Gift of Love?

Family Trusts provides a hands-on primer aimed at fostering positive relationships and structuring trusts for the wide variety of unique situations and people involved. This is a practical, step-by-step guide for anyone who wants to develop independent beneficiaries rather than "trust-fund babies."

Family Trusts tackles difficult topics head on, from the first beneficiary meeting, to dealing with beneficiaries with addictions, to managing trusts within the context of blended families, and more. Written by a team of experts in family wealth, this timely treatment shows you how to avoid the pitfalls of trusts that can tear families apart by:

  • Carefully considering what type of person or institution would make the best trustee for your family
  • Detailing steps to educate beneficiaries about their responsibilities
  • Proposing specific mechanisms and structures that can help your family manage its trusts most effectively

Pass on wealth in a way that enriches the lives of beneficiaries with Family Trusts.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A practical tool kit for the trustee beneficiary relationship By Christian G. Stewart There are very few books that can be found that explain the trustee beneficiary relationship in terms that can be easily followed by readers who are not lawyers or otherwise involved as professionals in the trust industry. This is one of the few and that fact alone will make this a special and popular book. In theory it is often said that trusts are a relationship but what does that mean and how do you ensure that it is a good relationship? You could almost go as far as saying that Family Trusts, a Guide is a "relationship tool book" that aims to point the way to good relationships in the trust context and provides very practical actionable exercises and approaches. Because of this I actually see this as also being a book about the topic of family governance, because the relationship tools that it provides can be used in other situations where family members have to work with each other. Another area where the book is very up to date with international trusts practice is that it does talk in detail about the protector role and has useful suggestions on how to think about protectors. The discussion of the distribution function in trusts is new and innovative. I recommend the book to international readers who are involved in the structuring, & administration of trusts, as well as for trust settlors, beneficiaries and protectors, and of course trustees and trust officers.

The Tortoise and the Hare, by Aesop

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—Watts's elaborate detail draws out the familiar story into a full-fledged picture book with few changes to the basic tale. After picnicking under a tree in a meadow, the animals "enjoyed games and races," prompting Tortoise to challenge Hare to a circular running race beginning and ending at the picnic tree. Hare takes the lead, stopping at a cottage garden to stuff himself with some tasty vegetables and fallen apples, followed up with a long drink at a nearby stream, a conversation with his friend Mr. Fox, and a rest under a sweet-smelling honeysuckle hedge. When Hare awakens to the sound of cheering animals, he races across the meadow to find that Tortoise has already won. Leaving just enough white space to soothe the eyes, Watts has filled much of each page with finely detailed meadow grasses, bushes, trees, and wildflowers and an assortment of dear, tiny animals, birds, and insects and their homes for children to find and treasure. The story begins with a morning scene featuring a beaming yellow sun and ends with a slumbering slice of the moon in a starry nighttime sky. Picnic scenes show cakes, cupcakes, and a tea set; squirrel and mole playing tennis; hedgehog reading a picture book to little hedgehog, rabbit, and bird. Tiny clothes dry on a clothesline, and mouse holds a parasol to avoid the sun's rays. VERDICT A pleasant retelling, best shared one-on-one.—Susan Scheps, formerly at Shaker Public Library, OH

Review "The illustrations, detailed ink drawings with delicate watercolor washes, offer charming close-up views of the animals’ activities as well as broad views of inviting rural landscapes. This picture book offers a childlike vision of the tale and a pleasant experience for reading aloud."-Carolyn Phelan, Booklist"'The Tortoise and the Hare' is a fresh retelling of the old Aesop Fable so much beloved by past generations of young readers."- Midwest Book Review

In this unusual collection, poems and photographs focus on shapes in nature. Some shapes are found in familiar places: A circle is the sun and a crescent is the moon. But there are imaginative surprises too: an alligator’s tooth is a triangleand a frond’s shadow forms a square. Related shape words—round, halo, sphere, etc.—are scattered throughout the spreads. This collaboration captures the beauty of shapes in nature in a playful way.
