About the Author SUZANNE LANG produces, develops, and writes for children’s television. Formerly with Cartoon Network, she is presently the story editor on an animated comedy series for Cake Entertainment and Copa Studios. Suzanne has a BFA in film and television from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.MAX LANG is an animation director, storyboard artist, character designer, and illustrator. He co-directed the film adaptation of the picture book The Gruffalo, which was nominated for an Oscar and a BAFTA, as well as the Oscar-nominated adaptation of the picture book Room on the Broom, which has won numerous awards, including the Cristal for Best TV Production at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

Suzanne and Max Lang use all types of animals to illustrate every type of family you can imagine. The text is quick and humors, but it's the illustrations that steal the show. The expressions and animal combinations are quirky, charming, and entirely too cute.

Everything about this book is whimsical and light and will serve as a great jumping off point for parents looking to discuss with their children just what makes a family. Each page features an adorable picture of different animal families. One page features two sheep parents and two wolf children along with the text "Some children are adopted." Another page features two roosters and three chicks along with the caption "Some children have two dads." This is followed by an octopus with lots of babies along with the caption "Some have one mom." The text flows nicely, making this an excellent read aloud.Each family picture appears in a frame. The animals are cartoon cut outs set against a realistic photo background. This collage technique gives the art energy and a delightful sense of whimsy that will ensure many requests for repeat reads. The final page reinforces the idea that no matter how many parents, siblings, cousins, aunts, or uncles you have, love is what holds a family together. A fine sense of humor and a valuable message make this book an enthusiastic recommend for any preschool or elementary collection.

Can it include your aunt, your grandparents, your plant, and your cousins? This book explains that as long as these individuals love each other they are your family, so anything goes including your stepsis and your llama, if you have one. Using crazy animals, this author shows children that your family can include all sorts of different situations and that any combination is okay as long as there is love in the household. Most of the individuals portrayed inside this children’s book are realistic but a few of them the author throws in to make the book fun, for example the robot butler and a rose. I feel this author covered an exceptional amount of different parenting options that are practiced today. Most children will be able to relate to something within this book whether it is the adults they live with or the other individuals residing with them or the other items the author decided to include inside this great entertaining book. It really is a cute book that should be shared with children as children need to see that not everyone is the same but everyone should be accepted for who they are.
