There are pirates, treasure, hidden clues, and lots of action. This was our bedtime story book, but the 12 chapters only lasted us a week because my son would beg me to read him another chapter!

The story is told from a few different eras, but it's all tied together into an exciting saga. The characters are people that the reader comes to care about and the ending will have you on the edge of your seat.I hope to have more stories from Ms. Angel to read in the near future!

Chilling and well-written story By TFLReader I love a good horror story and particularly one that builds on some sort of legend or true life event, as that just makes them even more chilling. Author Caroline Angel has written a pretty awesome one with "Madman Across the Water". A story that builds on the legend of the Slenderman, this is the story of a town bordering on some scary woods that have been haunted by a creature for generations, only lately it has been getting worse. There is a great mystery to solve behind the creepy monster and there are a lot of horrific losses along the way. Enjoyed the journey with Simon and found this to be very well written, well paced, and imaginative.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Scary on so many levels By laurathomas61 Yes, as the title says, there’s a madman across the water. But there’s something else, something in the woods. Something evil. It comes in the fog. It takes the children. They never return. The thing in the woods has been around as long as the town folk can remember. But it’s never been this bad. Usually it’s a few people or children go missing. But this time is different. It’s leaving the woods, attacking people in their homes, at the hospital, and even at the police station. There’s nowhere you can hide. Running away doesn’t work. It’s simple. It wants you and it will have you.I love horror. Been reading it since I was young. Give me a good scary story and I’m not available for hours. This is a good one. A creeping fog. An ancient evil, a monster, in the woods. What more could I ask for?Well, it takes a lot to creep me out. And this author did a great job of it.I wanted a mystery behind the monster. I got that. It started over a hundred years ago.I wanted things to escalate quickly. They did. People are taken at an alarming rate. That thing is insatiable.I wanted no characters off limits. Got that too. Guess I should warn you here. The author doesn’t shy away from killing off her characters. So don’t get to attached.I wanted a flawed hero. Got more than one of those. There’s the two brothers, their ancestors, their kids, some of the town folk. Many of them stepped up to play the part. A lot of them didn’t make it to the end of the story. And, last but not least, I wanted a truly horrific monster. Boy, did I get that. The thing in the woods is terrifying. It goes wherever it wants. Playfully kills you, like tearing apart a rag doll. And if it lets you live, you’ll wish you were dead. The authors description of how the thing looked was chillingly detailed. Take another look at the cover art. See that thing on the right? By the trees? That’s what’s in the woods. But by the time the author is finished describing it, you’ll see it up close, in all it’s hideous glory. If you’re a horror fan. If you like it in your face. You’ll love this one.I received this book for my honest review.

Birds were "the objects of my greatest delight," wrote John James Audubon (1785 1851), founder of modern ornithology and one of the world s greatest bird painters. His masterpiece, The Birds of America depicts almost five hundred North American bird species, each image lifelike and life size rendered in vibrant color. Audubon was also an explorer, a woodsman, a hunter, an entertaining and prolific writer, and an energetic self-promoter. Through talent and dogged determination, he rose from backwoods obscurity to international fame.

In This Strange Wilderness, award-winning author Nancy Plain brings together the amazing story of this American icon s career and the beautiful images that are his legacy. Before Audubon, no one had seen, drawn, or written so much about the animals of this largely uncharted young country. Aware that the wilderness and its wildlife were changing even as he watched, Audubon remained committed almost to the end of his life to search out the things which have been hidden since the creation of this wondrous world. This Strange Wilderness details his art and writing, transporting the reader back to the frontiers of early nineteenth-century America.

This Strange Wilderness: The Life and Art of John James Audubon, by Nancy Plain

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—In this insightful biography, Plain demonstrates how naturalist and artist John James Audubon's groundbreaking The Birds of America, published in England in 1827, rocked the art and science worlds through its depictions of birds in naturalistic poses and in their own habitats. Born in Haiti and raised in France, Audubon (1785–1851) displayed a passion for drawing early on. As an adult, living and working in the United States, he struggled to portray birds realistically, eventually using wires to hold his specimens on boards in lifelike poses. Readers will get a strong sense of how devoted the man was to his cause, often leaving his family to roam the American wilderness hunting birds or to work on his book in England. Through beautifully crafted prose, Plain vividly describes the land Audubon loved, often in his own words, quoted from his letters. Audubon's stunning artwork is beautifully reproduced and paired with his thoughts on specific illustrations. Readers will also appreciate the inclusion of relevant paintings, photographs, and other images. This narrative of the life of a dedicated and hard-working figure is the story of an amazing individual and a glimpse into the natural history of the early United States. VERDICT An excellent addition to science and biography collections.—Frances E. Millhouser, formerly at Fairfax County Public Library, VA

Review "Plain chronicles Audubon's adventurous life in a succinct, absorbing narrative that is well researched, meticulously documented, and beautifully written. . . . This biography offers a vivid introduction to Audubon's life and work."—Carolyn Phelan, Booklist starred review (Carolyn Phelan Booklist 2015-04-01)"Like Audubon's paintings, this volume 'glow[s] with life.' A superb introduction to the life and times of a great American artist and naturalist."—Kirkus starred review (Kirkus 2015-01-15)"Nancy Plain provides readers of all ages a concise introduction to the naturalist's prophetic role in the establishment of the American conservation movement."—True West (True West)"Plain has chosen quirky and interesting snippets of Audubon’s life, nicely illustrated with 44 color plates, for this readable and fascinating little book."—Star Tribune (Star Tribune 2015-06-07)"Definitely a book children and adults will enjoy."—Roundup Magazine (Roundup Magazine)“This Strange Wilderness is like walking through a secret door into early nineteenth-century America. Nancy Plain’s stellar prose and meticulous research, combined with the glorious paintings of John James Audubon, will delight readers of all ages.”—Candace Simar, author of the Spur Award–winning Abercrombie Trail series  (Candace Simar 2014-09-16)

MARKLEY Nancy Plain’s This Strange Wilderness: The Life and Art of John James Audubon joins her long list of masterpiece writing. Plain tells the life story of John James Audubon in a concise, lively manner. Her book is illustrated with the great artwork of America’s premier ornithologist. Together the smooth engaging prose and the excellent choice of images will keep young and old thoroughly engaged to the end and wanting to learn more about Audubon and his work.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great book for middle-school readers By Alison Beautifully illustrated with drawings, paintings, engravings, and photographs, Plain’s work is an excellent introduction for middle-schoolers to stories that were once a staple in American schools. Young readers may be especially entertained by the account of Jean-Jacques’s own school days in Rochefort: an “expert hooky player and adventurer,” the young Audubon soon enough flunked out of the academy and turned to nature for the rest of his education.Plain’s prose is appropriately simple and straightforward, and four pages are devoted to a glossary defining terms and names, from “Bachman” to “zoology,” that might be new to the young reader. This is well-told history, warts and all.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I couldn't put it down and learned much about Audubon that I never knew! By Stuart Dunn One could argue that no one loved birds more than John James Audubon. He devoted his life to discovering and painting every North American species of birds. The book This Strange Wilderness is a biography of Audubon and also includes some of his artwork, which is stunning if you have never seen it. The book begins with Audubon's birth in Haiti and the death of his mother he never knew. His father, a French sea captain and plantation owner, took him back to France where he and his wife Anne raised James and his half-sister Rose. James' father was responsible for his love of birds and his passion for illustrating them. Audubon was never happy with his drawings. He was so disappointed with them that he burned the drawings every year on his birthday with a vow to do better. The book then chronicles the horrors in France, including the French Revolution, and Audubon's engineered escape to America. It was here where Audubon met his wife. He had three children by her, two boys, and a girl who died at a very early age. Audubon had several failed business ventures and contributed much to the study of bird migration, ornithology, and taxonomy while attempting to provide for his family in these business ventures that failed. There are times in this book that Audubon didn't come off as a particularly great husband or father, as he left his wife (albeit with her blessing) to pursue his lifelong ambition of finding, painting, and cataloging every bird in North America. The book continues to trace Audubon's journey across America and his keen insight into birds and sadly their eventual extinction.Reading through this book felt like reading a story, not a dry biography. The Audubon quotes demonstrated both his intelligence and his personality. The book also is full of photographs of the Audubons and Audubon's beautiful paintings. I also learned a lot about Audubon that I never knew, such as his early childhood and the fact that he drew mammals after he completed his book of birds. This was a fascinating read and one that I would recommend for middle-school and up. It contains a nice blend of science and history and would also make an excellent book for the homeschooling crowd!

This is the magic story of the LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD. told in rhymes for your delight. The beautiful illustrations will be found inside the book.Enjoy the reading! Once there lived a child so pretty; she was also sweet and witty. Her mother made a cape so red; along with a hood to fit on her head. Little Red’s mom made some fresh bread, “Go take these to your ill granny,” she said. Little Red’s granny lived a few miles down, near an old mill at the edge of town. A wolf came by as she continued to walk, she didn’t know it was dangerous to talk. The wolf seemed friendly and nice, she didn’t see the evil in his eyes. “Where are you off to, little child? why are you alone in the wild? You walk through this path alone, with vines and bushes overgrown.” “Oh I’m off to see my granny who is sick, I took this path because it’s quick. I have fresh bread for her to eat, It’s still a bit hot and just a bit sweet.” The wolf was hungry; hungry for days, and he had his wicked ways. He said farewell and raced for the place; to eat a child- he had lots of space! The wolf saw that granny wasn’t there, and it was time to lay his plans bare. Red came knocking on the door: “Granny, are you better than before?” “Come in, child. Granny misses you so, come closer for I can’t stand, you know.” “Granny, why do you sound hoarse?” “I’m still feeling ill, of course!” “I’ve brought you something to eat; this will be a good treat. Mother baked some bread just for you, to help you cope with your flu.” The bad wolf had worn granny’s dress; could Little Red Riding Hood have a guess? Red inched closer for a better look; and one glance was all it took. “Granny, what big ears you’ve got; how could it have changed a lot?” “All the better to hear you Red, now come closer to my bed?” “Granny, how big your eyes are too.” Red’s curiosity grew and grew. “All the better to see you Red, now come closer so I can kiss your head.” “But Granny, your arms are big; and your hair looks like a funny wig. So changed and sharp are your teeth, it feels like you’re different underneath!” “And so you are right little Red!” The wolf then sprang from the bed. Red gasped and tried to run; she looked for help but there was none! A hunter came with a large knife; just in time to save Red’s life. He grabbed the wolf before it could bite, and cut of its head with all his might. The wicked wolf was now dead, and in town the word had spread. Red was the safest she could be- and with kisses from mother and granny! AND THE MORAL OF THIS STORY IS: Don’t trust strangers right away. Fun Rhymes with a Message ♥ By Caroline I am nine years old and I like this book because it was like Red Riding Hood but even better because of the catchy rhyme it was told with which made it so different and more fun to read than other Little Red Riding Hood books. The character drawings in this book are amazing and I liked the drawings of the trees so much that I want to try to draw my trees like that from now on. They are sooo cool and cute. =)The story also had a really good message that I think everyone should know. Kind of like “Stranger Danger” that I learnt about at school. It’s super important that kids like me know just in case there is a big bad wolf (person) in our own neighborhood or wherever we are so we know of the danger so we can be more careful & stay safe. But if we didn’t know that there was any bad people out there in the world we would be like Red Riding Hood and that could turn out bad. This is a fun book to read but also a super first book to learning about “Stranger Danger”, too. I’ve read it to my little brother and I even told him about being careful about strangers even if they might be good you still need to be careful. ✌(-‿-)✌

By Don Kidwell ...Little Red's mom made some fresh bread, "Go take these to your ill granny," she said.' Delightful rhyming children's book with awesome illustrations perfect for reading to the kiddos, and what with it being so close to Mother's Day I'd think it one of the better Grimm's fairy tales for the occasion. Very good book! One of a dozen or so books reviewed a couple of weeks prior to Mother’s Day so that you have time to read and enjoy them yourself!

From the author of "The Tabernacle" comes a new, can't-miss commentary. The book of Hebrews contends for Jesus Christ's divinity, proving He fulfills the Messianic hope of Israel. It explains His incarnation, priesthood, testing, faith, endurance, substitutionary death for sin, and His resurrection and New Covenant ministry. Hebrews teaches the supremacy, superiority, and sufficiency of the God-Man, Jesus Christ. The epistle also exhorts, warns, and encourages Jewish believers not to leave their faith in Christ because of persecution but, rather, to strive on toward spiritual maturity. It counsels them to be compassionate, content, consistent, committed, and consecrated in their faith.
