Over on a Mountain: Somewhere in the World, by Marianne Berkes

From School Library Journal PreS—Following the rhyme scheme and pattern of "Over in the Meadow," this story introduces animals from all over the world and the mountains where they reside. Each creature is shown in its natural habitat, accompanied by a picture of the continent where it can be found, labeled with the mountain range where it lives. For example, for the llama, readers will find a brief rhyme ("Over on a mountain/Grazing in the morning sun,/Lived a wooly mother llama/And her little cria one./'Roll,' said the mother./'I roll,' said the one./So they rolled in the dirt/Grazing in the morning sun."), a cutout of South America, with the Andes indicated. The collage illustrations are beautiful and layered with exquisite details. Readers will enjoy looking for hidden animals found on each spread; further material on the concealed creatures is appended. There is also a "Fact or Fiction" section that discusses the creative liberties the author has taken and clears up some questions that kids may have. Other sections include more information on the animals and on mountains. VERDICT A solid addition to most nature collections.—Melisa Bailey, Harford County Library System, MD

Review Berkes continues her "Over in the Meadow"-based series of early science books with this look at animals that live in the mountains. This diverse habitat can be found on every continent, and Berkes does a nice job of including at least one mountain range from each and identifying and mapping it on details that accompany the illustrations as well as on a large world map in the backmatter. Most of the verses scan well, whether read or sung, though readers may stumble on the gorilla verse: "Over on a mountain / Where leaves and berries thrive, / Lived a shy mother gorilla / And her little babies five." The animals range from the familiar emperor penguins and pandas to those that may be new to young readers Alpine ibex and wombats. Llamas, snow leopards, eagles, mountain lions and yaks complete the menagerie. As with most in this series, the artwork stands out for its beauty and craftsmanship. Dubin s textured cut- and torn-paper illustrations evoke both animals and habitats fur looks soft, rocks look hard, and one can almost smell the greenery, though the scenes are less realistic than cute. And the backmatter adds significantly to the learning experience with paragraphs about mountain habitats, the featured animals and the bonus hidden animals. Author s and illustrator s notes give hints on how to extend the fun and learning and tell how the art was created. What habitat is left for Berkes to explore? Readers and teachers will hope at least one. (music score) (Informational picture book. 3-7) --Kirkus ReviewsAs she has done in Over in a River, Over in the Ocean, and other titles, Berkes adapts the song Over in the Meadow, for an animal centric counting book, this time introducing 20 animals that live in mountainous regions throughout of the world. Ten,including panda, ibex, and wombat families, are the focus of her stanzas, while 10 more are hidden in the images for readers to locate. Jill Dubins richly textured torn-paper collages provide ample visual interest, and substantial appended resources about the animals and their habitats offer additional avenues for children to engage. Ages 3 to 8. --Publisher's WeeklyWombats, gorillas, and penguins, oh my! This guide to mountain animals from all over the world introduces creatures not necessarily well known to the average reader, using a catchy meter and rhyme to teach about their habits and habitats. Giving the name of each baby animal and labeling their home mountain range on a world map, this book offers a multitude of educational venues. Ages four and up. --Forward Reviews

In fact, Over on a Mountain is my favorite of all the wonderful counting books she has produced. Animals from mountain ranges on all the seven continents are included, and as usual, we have the hidden animals in each picture to try to spy. Extensive information about each animal, facts about mountains and activities to extend the learning are included in the back. Once again, Jill Durbin's papercut illustrations enhance the story like "salt on meat." The maps showing the location of the mountain ranges are fabulous! A must purchase for every school and public library.I highly recommend it for home collections as well. Best suited for ages 3 - 8, but suitable, too, for adults who want to hone their Jeopardy! skills. --Judy Houser, Lower School Librarian, Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy

Over on the Mountain meets the high levels that the previous Over in the ....series. I learned about animals that I have always heard of but never really thought about where it lived (wombat!). A really great touch is the sequence of maps on each page. The mountain range is labeled and its location identified on each map which is a simple outline of the appropriate continent. I really love how the illustrator made all the mountains look different. The illustrations are super. Marianne, as you may know, stocks the back of her book with loads of relevant information and facts, this one is no different. It could be used as a reference book! Thanks for another beautiful and useful book to add to my collection. I will be using it with many grade levels to teach a myriad of lessons.

By Erin Schade Gotta love a book that covers all learners in a house/classroom ages 3-7! The three year old loves the pattern of the book, the counting and the pictures (especially the hidden animal on each page). The 7 year old loves all that plus the geography, explanatory maps and the factual information page at the end that adds to his understanding. You know it's great when I, as an adult, learn a lot but yet still it is a hit with preschoolers. My three year old walks around singing the words over and over. Great purchase.

Chan I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I couldn't put it down and plowed through it in a day!I found J. Hannigan's style and vocabulary quite refreshing, and his take on the Arthurian tale is unique, to say the least. The characters were well thought of, and i could tell that there was more to each character the moment they were introduced. I also very much appreciated how careful the author was with his words in creating the relational tension between Fleur and the legendary Grailknight - making sure that subtle hints and light touches spurred me to wonder and hope, and then to hope some more. This book's story world unfolds so smoothly and so gradually with the turning of every page. Needless to say, I am very pleased with the immersion experience that it gave me. Additionally, I would like to thank the author for taking the time to be intentional with his phraseology. The dialogues gave me a sense of realism precisely because of how the characters spoke.A fresh voice, a unique take on a nostalgic tale, well-developed characters, an immediately likable heroine, and a plot that builds upon progressive revelation, all makes for a very delightful journey through the pages!

Follow Fleur through the ages as she realizes that she would rather be a fighter than a Princess, and is taken on as a squire by The Perfect Knight. As the adventures progress you begin to see a different history take shape that really makes you question a few pieces of history that are commonly taken for granted. The characters take a while to truly develop and seem quite contrary at times. The relationships between them all feel awkward, and this is really the only reason that it's only 4 stars. But don't let that stop you from reading a very fun tale of history, magic and chivalry!

Lajeunesse Riveting tale! I was drawn into the story effectively, and although I generally only read in short stints, I often found it difficult to put down. The book would have benefitted from thorough editing, as I was bounced out of the story all too frequently by poor sentence structure and misplaced or missing punctuations. Had that not been the case, I would have given it five stars. While not generally a fan of fantasy, I did find it easy to enter the book's worlds, past and present, and picture it pretty effectively. Ms. Hannigan is a great story creator and story teller.

Talkin' Guitar: A Story of Young Doc Watson, by Robbin Gourley

From School Library Journal K-Gr 3—This charming picture book depicts the childhood of Arthel "Doc" Watson, a blind country and bluegrass guitarist, songwriter, and singer. This story begins on the endpapers, where a wash of soft greens invites readers to peek through trees and discover Watson's home, "where blue mountains meet the sky." Uncluttered watercolor illustrations add to the spare text, which stresses Watson's joyful exploration of the sounds of his world. A variety of colors set the tone: the bright red of the barn where he strummed a steel wire, lemon yellow for the notes on his first harmonica, a sweep of blue behind his banjo. Although his music "sounded like a rusty door hinge" at first, Watson kept with it. This story ends when Watson is still a teen, but an author's note explains how his chores on the farm gave him the confidence to pursue a successful career in music. VERDICT This enchanting introduction to a legendary musician is perfect for most biography collections.—Toby Rajput, National Louis University, Skokie, IL

Review "The paintings' rich colors and simplified, often rhythmically repeated forms suit the story well. A lyrical tribute to the childhood of a folk legend."—Booklist "A cadenced narrative and soft watercolors in a naïve style take readers through blind folk musician Arthel “Doc” Watson’s Appalachian upbringing."—Publishers Weekly "Uncluttered watercolor illustrations add to the spare text, which stresses Watson's joyful exploration of the sounds of his world...this enchanting introduction to a legendary musician is perfect for most biography collections."—School Library Journal "Gourley's affectionate biography is a great starting point for young readers, who are most likely unfamiliar with Doc Watson."—Horn Book Magazine "In twangy language and moody, brightly colored watercolor art, Gourley emphasizes his keen ear, subtle appreciation of both sound and silence, and loving, supportive family."—New York Times Book Review

Wonderful non-fiction book to introduce students to Bluegrass By Lisa Genschel Raleigh, North Carolina is hosting Wide Open Bluegrass (#WOB) this weekend (Oct 2&3, 2015). Our elementary school is having a Bluegrass Cultural Arts event for the students. This book was a great asset in educating the students about Bluegrass and Doc Watson. There are not many books about bluegrass music and musicians for early readers. The author, Robbin Gourley, was interviewed by our local newspaper (http://www.newsobserver.com/entertainment/music-news-reviews/on-the-beat-blog/article19381014.html). The combination of materials and listening to audio and video was a good introduction and preparation. Lots of fun and educational.

Concepts are presented in a relatively isolated manner; connections between concepts are, for the large part, missing. Furthermore, if the materials presented are rather shallow like in this book, readers will expect to see a strong emphasis on, or hands on exercises of, practical applications. But this book doesn't seem to help much in that regard either, despite what the book claims. The book does give introduction to a bunch of models, which can be useful for a beginner. But at least this edition I wouldn't suggest any one to buy because of poor editing. For example, the pseudo code fragments listed in the book are often wrong, or different than what is described by the text. References to formulas, etc need some proof reading, too.

(As you probably know, guinea pigs can make lots of different noises, but talking is something they only do when humans aren’t around.) Coco got no response from her friend Fuzzy, so she tried again. "Oh dear, oh dear," she sighed a little louder. Still no response! Honestly, Fuzzy could be so annoying sometimes. "Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, OH DEAR!" she said, and then gave a sigh so huge she nearly fell out of the hutch, where she was having a late-night read of the local newspaper. "I can hear you," said Fuzzy as he danced on the laptop keyboard, which Ben had left open. Ben was Fuzzy’s owner, and he was rather forgetful, which was ideal for Fuzzy because it meant he could do a little late-night surfing on the Net.   "Then why don’t you ask me what’s wrong?" said Coco crossly. "Because I already blinking well know," said Fuzzy, who was not posh at all. "You’re worried about being stolen." "Well, aren’t you?" asked Coco, looking anxiously out of the French windows into the dark night. She wished Henrietta, who was her owner, had bought some curtains for them, but Henrietta, like her husband Ben, was also rather forgetful.   Sometimes she forgot to brush her hair, and sometimes he forgot to wear socks, and both of them had forgotten to have children, but it didn’t really matter, because Fuzzy and Coco were just as adorable as children, with the added attraction of having lovely soft fur. "What if someone comes and steals us tonight?" asked Coco in a worried voice. "Like those other guinea pigs." "They won’t," said Fuzzy, sliding his bottom along the mouse in order to change websites. "The doors are locked. Ben and Henrietta are asleep upstairs. If anyone broke in, they’d hear and come and save us." "But what if …" Coco paused dramatically and glanced at Fuzzy to make sure he was listening. Sure enough, he had stopped tapping on the mouse and was lying still, ears back. She continued in a little, squeaky voice: "… they come while Ben and Henrietta are away?" This is what Coco had been sighing about all along. Ben and Henrietta were due to go on holiday in only two days’ time. They were going to save seals down on the coast, which wouldn’t be a holiday for most people. What’s more, Henrietta was a vet, and Ben worked for an animal rescue centre, so it really was a bit like their work. But then again, they loved all animals, and most people try to do what they love on holiday, and for Ben and Henrietta that was rescuing seals."We’ll just have to run away and hide somewhere where they can’t get us," said Fuzzy, trying to sound tougher than he felt. "But the Sheltie who was taken was really fast! He won the Rodent Race at his owner’s school!" exclaimed Coco, tapping the photo of a handsome black and white longhaired guinea pig in the newspaper. "And he got stolen. He was a rare breed too, like some of the others. So in total that’s fifty-five guinea pigs stolen in the Strawberry Park area since Christmas. I dread to think why they’re being taken. I hope it isn’t Scarlet Cleaver up to her tricks again."   Scarlet Cleaver was a famous chef who had stolen guinea pigs because she wanted to cook them. She had even stolen Fuzzy. Luckily Coco had been able to rescue all the guinea pigs, with a little help from her new guinea-pig friend Eduardo and Her Majesty the Queen. "Scarlet Cleaver’s still in prison," Fuzzy reminded Coco. "And anyway," he said, glancing at the newspaper, "that doesn’t look much like Scarlet Cleaver, unless she’s grown a beard and started wearing a hat." A grainy photograph of the suspect stared back at them from the page. Coco shivered. ‘Imagine meeting him on a dark night!’ she squealed. "I mean, what if …?" "What about this?" Fuzzy interrupted. He was staring at the computer screen. Coco came and sat next to him on the mouse. "'Come to Furry Towers'," Fuzzy read out loud, "'the Ultimate Five-Star Guinea-Pig Hotel'.""Guinea-pig hotel?" repeated Coco. "Now you’re being silly, Fuzzy. There’s no such thing as a guinea-pig hotel." "Yes, there is, Coco. Look!" Coco reluctantly looked up at the screen. She wasn’t very keen on computers. She much preferred newspapers, and chatting with her guinea-pig friends, like Banoffee, who lived next door. ‘“Let us pamper your guinea pig!”’ she read. ‘“Furry Towers offers the ultimate cavy experience – from our luxury accommodation to our state-of-the-art beauty spa. Your pet will have sweet dreams on our handpicked hay beds. Meals are served in the deluxe hutches or out in the spacious runs and consist of organic vegetables delicately shredded or diced. Let your pet exercise in our fully equipped gym, an exact model of the Olympic training facility, and relax afterwards in the spa, where he or she can enjoy an aromatherapy bubble bath followed by a blueberry-and-vanilla facial.”’ "Oh, Fuzzy," Coco sighed, only this time it wasn’t a worried sigh – it was a happy sigh."You like it, don’t you?" He looked at her lovingly, because they did love each other; they just weren’t in love like Ben and Henrietta. Coco nodded her head. "I would want to go there even if there wasn’t any guinea-pig-napping going on. It sounds the most wonderful place in the world. I wish the holiday started tomorrow …" Then she looked worried again. "But how will we get Ben and Henrietta to take us there? They might not even know about it.""Easy," said Fuzzy, tapping a couple of keys on the computer. "We just leave this page open for Ben to read." "I see," said Coco, although she didn’t really see how a screen could have a page. She wasn’t going to admit that to Fuzzy though. Next morning, the first thing Ben did when he came down to the kitchen was to check on the guinea pigs, because he too had heard about the guinea-pig-nappings and wanted to make sure that Fuzzy and Coco were still safe in their hutch. Neither Ben nor Henrietta had any idea that the guinea pigs were so clever they could let themselves out when the humans weren’t around. Happy to see them sleeping safely in the soft hay, he went over to the computer to look at the day’s news. To his surprise, it wasn’t showing its usual home page. It was open on a website he hadn’t seen or heard of before: Come to Furry Towers, the Ultimate Five-Star Guinea-Pig Hotel!   What a good idea, he thought, because he and Henrietta had been talking about the guinea-pig-nappings only the day before, and had agreed that it was a worry to leave Fuzzy and Coco with the little girl down the road only coming in once a day to feed them. With no one living in the house, they would be easier to steal. "Henrietta must have found the site after I went to bed," he said aloud, "and left it open for me to see." When Henrietta got up, she thought the same as Ben did. Ben must have found the website while she was having her bath, and had left it open for her to see.   Over breakfast they decided to send their precious guinea pigs to the hotel."You are clever, darling," Henrietta said. "So are you, darling," Ben said. "It’s the perfect solution – to send them to a hotel." "Yes, perfect." While Ben gave the guinea pigs their morning stroke, Henrietta picked up the telephone."Hello, is that Furry Towers?" Coco and Fuzzy listened eagerly. "Do you have space for two guinea pigs for a week from Wednesday?" The two guinea pigs held their breath."You do? That’s great!" Coco and Fuzzy started squeaking with delight. Ben looked at them fondly. "If I didn’t know better, I’d say you two already knew you were going on holiday!" he laughed.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Gripping Adventure, With A Few Laughs, for Your Early Reader By Pop Bop This book is great fun. Coco and Fuzzy, (who are guinea pigs), talk, scheme, adventure, surf the internet, and exchange dry and pithy bon mots. Fuzzy is tech savvy; Coco is a bit posh because she once belonged to the Queen. What's not to love? It's as though a slightly smarter Bertie Wooster and Jeeves ate mostly lettuce and lived in a hutch in your bedroom. (Anyway, when I read that the two visited a social networking site called "Micespace" I knew I was going to like this author.)In this episode of the Coco and Fuzzy series, (number two of at least four "Guinea Pigs Online" books), the two guinea pigs are deposited at Furry Towers, a supposedly elegant pet hotel, while their owners go out of town. Furry Towers is a dump and a front for shady dealings, and Coco, Fuzzy and their fellow prisoners have to plan a break out. The story partly runs as a goof on the movie "The Great Escape", which is pretty sly for a kid's book.A number of interesting secondary characters complement our two heroes. My favorite was Edouardo the macho Andean Agouti guinea pig, who lives in the thicket behind the yard and harasses the foxes. There are a few regulars from book to book and then a few guest characters in each individual book so there is a lot of variety. And these characters have well defined, engaging and individual presences, which is sort of amazing for an early reader book, when you think about it.The writing is very accomplished. There is never a hint of condescension, and the author clearly has a lot of respect for her kid readers. The descriptions and the plotting are neither too thin nor belabored, so that the story moves along at a nice pace but never loses the reader. The whole thing feels light and airy, but there is a lot of craft at work under the surface. As Coco might say, "One appreciates the effort".It seems this would be a fun read-to; I can imagine hamming it up a bit, using different voices for the two heroes as I read this out loud. It would also work as an independent read, as it seems that it would be quite manageable, (maybe with a little help here and there), for the target interest/reading level young readers. So, a nice find that adds some gentle good humor to the early reader category, and introduces two very amiable and appealing heroes. Worth a close look for sure. (Please note, while I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I bought a digital copy and it's a great read. From his touching personal journey By Jason Huskie I bought a digital copy and it's a great read. From his touching personal journey, which is just a small part, to his challenge to the broken government that continues to betray citizens in favor of corporations. Mr Ockander shows poise and maturity. I will be writing in his name on the ballot come this election. I advise others to do the same. To be totally candid, I am quite sure our votes don't actually matter. The election is decided by corrupt representatives who are self serving. They continue to take rights and benefits from you but give themselves raises, immunity and take kickbacks and high paying jobs from corporations they provide godlike powers to. Writing in a real person will do no more good but at least you can look your loved ones in the eyes and say that you didn't do anything to make the world worse on election day. See if your views align with this brave patriot's and then start an open dialog with him and others on important issues facing our nation.

While you may not agree with some of his proposals, you will concur that America is in dire need of truthful & trustworthy leaders; a reversal in regulations which usurp individual Rights & harm small businesses; & novel ideas to chronic problems. His book/planks are very easy to read. You won't find "politician-speak' language in it, just "plain English". It'd be great to share with friends this election year for their reaction and fresh debate! Mr Ockander is vying for candidacy of the Constitution Party, ....but any other Party might want to steal some of his appealing ideas!
