Letter to My Daughter is a remarkable expression of love and truth By MiFinger A Letter to My Daughter is a remarkable expression of love and truth. As a father with a 10 year old I have personally delivered many of these feelings to my little girl. As man with melanin skin I find it very important for the growth and mental development of our young girls that we express our love to them. Great book!

These letters were written to his parents by an 18 then 19 year old Rudy almost three fourth of a century ago. He was then serving in the US Navy, first in this country and then on an LST (Landing Ship Tank, the tub with the bow doors) engaged in various missions in the China Sea and, finally, as part of the crew that readied the ship for decommissioning in the Puget Sound, with liberty in Seattle. A large variety of subjects are touched upon—life in the Navy of course, playing various roles—from training in boot camp to Rudy’s job in the ship’s wheelhouse (where he served as quartermaster) to comments about his eccentric captain. By then the young author was a serious lover of classical music, so he relates how he worked that in with his role as an enlisted sailor. As a lightly practicing Jew, he touches on his adventures in that realm, including as a member of the Great Lakes synagogue choir—of which there is a splendid picture. A recurring theme is Rudy’s concern to get into a college as soon as he is discharged. Chunks of the letters are written in German, since only six year earlier, the author had arrived in New York with his parents and younger brother, Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany. While English soon became Rudy’s best language, that was not true of his parents, just under and just over forty years old. Needless to say, in the book the German paragraphs are immediately followed by English translations. These are not great letters or profound ones, but many of them are amusing, intentionally and otherwise. They give pictures of life in the middle of the last century, of the concerns of a teenager and of his sometimes worrying parents. There are illustrations, as well, including some exotic scenes of China, as well as shots of Waikiki, a stop on the way back home. The book makes a good read.

It was so interesting to see Rudy's voice emerge over the course of them. Emotions are very reserved and formal, if obvious at all, in the early letters. After the return stateside to Seattle, there is a real change in voice. Suddenly the boy is an American: able to express feelings freely, even to honored parents. The English becomes quite suddenly entirely colloquial and enthusiastic. The German language syntax and stiffness is quite suddenly gone. It is as though the basic, early Navy experience culminating in an immersion in Western US culture fostered a newly independent Americanized young man, with a bit of rule breaking thrown in.I also had lots of thoughts about the religious mentions-that Rudy already knew the Torah blessings because he "was from New York"-or that his father "should know no more Hitlers"-etc. The letters read as being from a very specific historical time and are interesting on that level too. And of course the photos of the 19 year old Rudy are heart stopping: tall and somewhat larger than life.

By Michele Tolela Myers A moving correspondance about a remarkably caring Jewish family who escaped just in time from Germany in 1939 to New York, and their son during the last year of WW II. The eighteen year-old enlisted Navy man wrote regularly to his parents even when there were no big news to share, simply because he knew how much his letters meant to them and to his and younger brother. A remarkable boy, already cultured and savvy, who aspired to go to the best college he could get into (which turned out to be Columbia). He writes about the day to day work on a ship that took him to China, about the concerts and operas he attended when he was on "liberty" in Chicago, his love of music, books, and his determination to succeed. A great read.

Very detailed introduction to moving your infrastructure to AWS By neuron I picked up this book as part of my upskilling journey from Data Scientist, without a formal CS background, into a Data (Science) Engineer. Prior to this one, I went through two other titles from Manning, "Big Data" and "Storm Applied", and went with "Amazon Web Services in Action" as a logical next step. The book provides a very detailed walkthrough of various aspects of AWS, from setting up your free developer account, spinning up an EC2 instance using various available AMIs, all the way to more advanced topics, such as auto-scaling, fault-tolerance and CloudWatch. A lot of attention is paid to securing your cloud infrastructure as well. The high point of the book for me was the fact that the authors provide both graphical AND terminal walkthroughs, which may be very handy for users who come from a more Windows-oriented background. Most of the examples can be implemented using the aforementioned free dev account, and only a few will require you to whip out your credit card (these are also appropriately marked). The book won't make you a certified AWS DevOps Engineer, but will get you well on your way to moving you infrastructure to AWS, or spinning up particular services as you need them for day-to-day work.

This book does an excellent job overviewing EC2, S3, CloudFormation and other services. There is a special emphasis on how they may be used interoperably with the fundamental goal of being failure resistant. If you are looking for an ease into using AWS, or you are an experienced user who would like to review how others recommend using the services this is an excellent book to have in your collection.

I have used Microsoft Azure before but not AWS and was looking learn AWS also. The book was written at the right level for me. It has many excellent diagrams and lots of screenshots of where to click. When configuration settings are shown there are arrows pointing and explaining what the file does. I got a good sense of where to go with the project I want to put on AWS.Examples in the book tended to use common software. For example, when describing SDKs they choose JavaScript/Node, but mentioned there are other languages as well. For Content Management Systems, they used Wordpress. Best practices are described often, and I think the authors know the material well. There were a few minor drawbacks to this book. The writing style is rather dry; it is written in tutorial fashion. Also, I noticed 3 typos while reading and I think the book can use some additional polishing. This was not enough for me to rate the book 4 stars though as the content is very good, and this is the first substantial book on AWS available. If you are looking to learn AWS or expand your knowledge of your existing AWS setup this book is a solid choice.

My opinion on "Goose Bumps Horror Land" By JaggerLennon My Book report is on the book called, "Goose Bumps Horror Land" and it is about a group of kids visiting a carnival, and they do not realize that the carnival is run by monsters in disguises. The kids are running down a hall, and a security guard stops them to ask where their parents are. One the kids said, "we came here without our parents." Then, the guard removed his mask and he was a creature from the unknown, then the kids were all frightened, so they all ran away. Then 3 other monsters ganged up on them, and kidnapped them. One of the creatures wanted to make them slaves. The main creature said, "let's just give them a chance", so he did. He asked the kids their names, were they lived, and why they came without their parents. So, the monsters let the kids go. When one of the boys got home. He realized his parents were acting different, then his mom and dad took off their masks, and they were monsters, and the dad monster said, "hey kid, come with us, then you'll get your parents back, okay?" The boy was stunned but he went to the carnival to find that all the other kids were there to. He said, "what have I done?" And that was all of the book.

There are no longer two stories, just one. The characters Lizzie and Luke Morris, from the original "One Day at Horrorland," return to the park to save the other kids. They have no other choice, but to go through the Hall of Mirrors and enter the black & white Panic Park. There are no exits, and finally the person behind the horror is revealed. This is an exciting sequel. It was great to see Lizzie and Luke back. I was disappointed with the villain. I expected that there would be a much eviler menace, maybe even an old villain from the original series. Overall, I enjoyed reading it.

Would you send a villain to do a hero's job? Flunked is an exciting new twisted fairy tale from the award-winning author of the Secrets of My Hollywood Life series. "Charming fairy-tale fun." -Sarah Mlynowski, author of the New York Times bestselling Whatever After series.

Gilly wouldn't call herself wicked, exactly...but when you have five little brothers and sisters and live in a run-down boot, you have to get creative to make ends meet. Gilly's a pretty good thief (if she does say so herself).

    Until she gets caught.

Gilly's sentenced to three months at Fairy Tale Reform School where all of the teachers are former (super-scary) villains like the Big Bad Wolf, the Evil Queen, and Cinderella's Wicked Stepmother. Harsh. But when she meets fellow students Jax and Kayla, she learns there's more to this school than its heroic mission. There's a battle brewing and Gilly has to wonder: can a villain really change?

"Fairy Tale Reform School is spellbinding and wickedly clever. Gilly is smart, spunky, and a hilarious narrator, and I cannot wait to read about her next adventure!" -Leslie Margolis, author of the Annabelle Unleashed novels and the Maggie Brooklyn mysteries

"Fairy Tale Reform School is a fresh and funny take on the enchanted world. (And who hasn't always wanted to know what happened to Cinderella's stepmother?)" -Julia DeVillers, author of the Trading Faces identical twin series and Emma Emmets, Playground Matchmaker

Flunked (Fairy Tale Reform School), by Jen Calonita

From School Library Journal Gr 4–7—Twelve-year-old Gilly is mostly happy living in a shoe with her parents and five siblings. Times are hard, though, especially since Cinderella's fairy godmother stole Gilly's father's design for the glass slipper. To help feed her family, Gilly steals food and trinkets from the wealthier residents of Enchantasia. Upon her third arrest for theft, Gilly is sentenced to three months in Fairy Tale Reform School, a juvenile detention facility run by Cinderella's Wicked Stepmother and other famous fairy tale antagonists. Fans of Liesl Shurtliff's Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin (Knopf, 2013) and Christopher Healy's The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom (HarperCollins, 2012) will find much to love in this fast-paced romp. While Gilly picks pockets without remorse, previously evil fairy tale villains have turned over a new leaf. The Evil Stepmother has made amends with Princess Ella and now helps Enchantasia's youngest criminals embrace their own inner virtue. The Big Bad Wolf is now Professor Wolfington, a popular teacher despite his bulging muscles and wolfish grin. While gargoyle attacks, suspicious behavior, and magical mayhem provide plenty of action, Gilly's constant self-sacrifice and insatiable need to spy on her teachers get old quickly. Drawings of news scrolls throughout the story help break up the text and may entice reluctant readers, though seasoned readers will predict the true antagonist long before the big reveal. VERDICT Gilly's plucky spirit and determination to oust the culprit will make Flunked a popular choice for tweens.—Leigh Collazo, Dulwich College, Suzhou, China

Review "This enjoyable series launch creatively incorporates familiar fairy-tale characters and hallmarks-princesses, talking mirrors, spells, and magical beings, from fairies to ogres-along with an engaging and spirited protagonist, abundant plot turns, and witty touches. Overall, there's much to amuse and entertain fans of classic tales with a twist." - Booklist"Calonita blithely samples from fairy tales, nursery rhymes, and folklore in this lighthearted first book in the Fairy Tale Reform School series.... Recognizable fairy-tale characters abound (profiles of the school's instructors, like Xavier Wolfington, the wolf from Little Red Riding Hood, appear throughout), and questions of whether goodness or badness run to the core of a person leave readers with plenty to consider." - Publishers Weekly"Gilly's plucky spirit and determination to oust the culprit will make Flunked a popular choice for tweens" - School Library Journal"Gilly hates the royals and blames them for her family's poverty. So robbing from the royals doesn't bother her at all. Unfortunately it's still a crime and lands her in Fairy Tale Reform School. But this school is not what she expected, and it just might make a hero of her yet. Fairy tale fans will love this clever and lively tale of magic, friendship, and courage. " - Discovery Girls"Flunked sounds incredibly innovative and appears to be turning the story of Cinderella's stepmother upside-down. I for one am dying to see the real reason behind Flora's reform school and what is really going down in Enchantasia." - B&N Kids Blog"A reform school where all the teachers are former villains. Kinda writes itself, right" - SLJ Fuse 8"Readers will recognize and enjoy the various fairy tales referenced here, as Calonita nods to movie adaptations as well as the original stories, and they'll enjoy her sly incorporation of social media to provide important background informa- tion and character sketches...this clever novel and its smart, endearing cast of characters will have readers enchanted and eager for the implied sequel(s). " - Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books"A spoof on folktales... would be enjoyed by students preferring fast-paced mysteries. Recommended" - School Library Connection

By Michelle@Book Briefs Flunked is the first book in an adorable middle grade series called Fairy Tale Reform School. I really liked this book. It put a smile on my face the whole time I was reading it. Yes, it was a younger read than I was used to, but it was perfectly suited for it's middle grade audience. The heroine is Gilly and is around 12 or 13. She is caught stealing a hair clip and is shipped off to the Fairy Tale Reform School for the mischievous children on the path to becoming a villain. I think this is such a cute idea for a magical and funny story.I really like that we got to see the "crime" that Gilly committed to get sent to reform school as it played out, rather than just starting the book with her already there and flashing back on what brought her in. I thought it gave the readers a great perspective on what her family is like, and gave us an idea of who Gilly is. I had a hard time calling her a mini villain because she didn't seem even close to evil, but I thought she did have some flair and interesting qualities that are not anything like your typical heroine. It made her more likeable, as strange as that sounds.I loved the fairy tale reform school setting. The professors were all ex-villains. Come on, you know that sounds like a fun school to be at! And Gilly's friends are great. This book kind of had an Ella Enchanted feel to it. I'm not completely sure why, because the story is not even close to the same, but I just kind of pictured the town and the schools to be the kind of setting from the Ella Enchanted movie with Anne Hathaway. That kind of colorful faux olde world setting? (I would really love someone else that has read the book to tell me if they felt the same way, or if I am just weird?)Bottom Line: Flunked is a super cute book in what I think will be a great middle grade series. Heck, not just for tweens. I liked this series, and I will be continuing on with it. I loved the humor in Jen Calonita's writing. Not to mention Flunked was a whole lotta fun to read.*Disclaimer- I got a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated for my thoughts.

With her sister’s upcoming birthday Gilly steals a comb for her thinking she made it home undetected. Looks like Gilly’s luck has run out she’s been caught for the third time. She’s forced to attend the Fairy Tale Reform school run by Flora the wicked step mother of Cinderella. For three months Gilly will spend her time at the school transforming from villain into a hero’s. The school is unlike anything she would have imagined studies, flying on Pegasus and so much more.Gilly finds friends among her fellow misfits Jax and Kayla finding a bond with each. After only being at the school for a few short weeks they are attacked by Gargoyles and Professor Harlow is controlled forced to attack Snow. Thanks to her quick thinking Gilly saves Snow as well as the rest of her follow students only to be released from school. Something is going on at the Fairy Tale Reform School maybe it’s not doing as good as expected. Will Gilly leave or figure out what’s really going on?I forgot that the characters are only 12 they seem much older. I liked Gilly she’s only doing what she could to take care of her family. While she may be a villain in the law’s eyes I don’t see her as one. I didn’t have any issues connecting with her as a character but I didn’t love her like I would have hoped. I like that she had her friends to support her on her new adventure at the school for Fairy Tale Reform.I’ve had Flunked on my TBR forever based on the cover alone, and this week it worked perfect for my scavenger hunt challenge so I decided to give it a shot. The concept is like a boarding school but the author puts her own twist and turns it into a villain reform school. Flunked is a fast paced story that is filled with action, mystery and a whole lot of magic. Flunked is a middle grade story which isn’t my typical read but I enjoyed it one of those books you can read in a lazy afternoon. The author has a great writing style her story flows smoothly from start to finish it’s a captivating read. I enjoyed Flunked but I didn't love it, but I am curious to check out the next one. I think the only issue I had is I kept forgetting that the main character was so young.

And it came up wanting. The recent spate of fairy tale redux(es?) has produced many new tales to enjoy. They come with a built-in audience, and since most everyone knows the stories already, the reader already "gets" a lot of it. Plus, it's a lot of fun to turn these legends on their heads, exploring them in a new and different way. Unfortunately, despite the intriguing plot, I am disappointed in this new series. The Wicked Stepmother, of Cinderella fame, is so distressed by and repentant of her treatment of Cinderella that she has turned over a new leaf. She wants to encourage other villains to do the same, so she opens Fairy Tale Reform School. The former villains all teach there, and all of the troubled youth in Enchantasia are sent there to get, of course, reformed. Not all of the baddies are former ones, however; two of the most notorious, Gottie (who imprisoned Rapunzel in her tower) and Alva (the malefactor of Sleeping Beauty) are in hiding, refusing to change their ways. There are four princesses who now rule over Enchantasia: Cinderella, Rapunzel, Rose (Sleeping Beauty) and Snow White. Not everyone gets a happily ever after, though. Twelve-year-old Gilly Cobbler, the daughter of a poor shoemaker, is one of the many in Enchantasia who are struggling to help put food on the table. Gilly is a thief, and though she is pretty good, she is finally caught enough times to warrant a stay at FTRS (as it is referred to in the book). She does not know how long she has to remain there; and her family, which includes her parents, three brothers and two sisters, depend on her "abilities" more than they know. How will they survive?Gilly plans to keep her nose clean so she can get out and get home quickly. No one's going to change her. But she meets some other "inmates" and starts to let down her guard a bit. Then they start to suspect that there are things happening at the school that could harm not only the students, but the visiting princesses and even Enchantasia itself. Does Gilly want to get involved or get home?It takes a long time for this story to get moving; and while the plot has loads of potential, it just doesn't go anywhere. Naturally, we are supposed to be a little wary of the reformed villains; that makes for a great plot device. And the new friends that Gilly makes, from fairies to trolls to regular boys, allows for an interesting group of secondary character types. However, there's just no depth to any of them, including Gilly. There's also a "mean girl" who happens to be the sister of Snow White's Wicked Queen, and her presence is jarring and out of place, especially since she shows her bad self in front of the WQ. If everyone who teaches there is supposedly repentant, why does the WQ allow Jocelyn to act the way she does? The language used is clunky; there are many attempts at snark and a lot of slang used, both of which seem out of place in the fairy tale environment. The writing style attempts to sound like "something the kids'll like." Many of the character names are unusual, which normally doesn't bother me, but they are so varied that they don't sound like they are from the same story. I don't know if Disney made up or owns the rights to the names of the villains, but I don't understand why their "normal" names weren't used. And at the story's close, I had sort-of a Harry Potter déjà vu; as I reviewed Flunked in my head, I realized that the structure of the story, among other things, was quite similar. Nothing wrong with that, I suppose, but the narrative in no way lives up to that series.Flunked (Fairy Tale Reform School #1) by Jen Calonita was published March 3, 2015 by Sourcebooks Jabberwocky. A free copy of this book was given to Ink and Page in return for an honest review. Gronk is a monster... and not a very good one. Gronk tells the tale of a young monster who has turned her back on monsterdom (mostly because no one found her scary) and has become fascinated with humans. She moves in with her human friend Dale and her pets Kitty and Harli, a 160 lb. Newfoundland Dale wants to declare as a dependent to the IRS. Enjoy the first installment from this popular kids webcomic in a wonderful, full-color collection!

Gronk: A Monster's Story Volume 1 (Gronk a Monsters Story Gn), by Katie Cook

From School Library Journal Gr 2–5—Gronk doesn't fit in among her kind. She is a most unmonstery monster, more caring than scaring. Running away from home, Gronk finds a more suitable family with a human jingle-writer named Dale and her pets, Kitty and Harli. Much fish-out-of-water comedy ensues in these four-panel comic strips. While the humor centers on the imaginative and curious monster's mischief, there is an underlying message of acceptance and inclusion throughout. Originally published as a black-and-white webcomic, this collection adds vivid colors to Cook's strong line work and sweetly expressive characters. The panels are filled with clever details that reward close study. Geek references abound, from the "Lord of the Rings" to "Harry Potter" to Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Some of the jokes may be lost on younger readers, but there is nothing inappropriate. This volume collects the comic strips from Gronk's first year, and planned sequels will collect subsequent years. The back matter includes Gronk strips by other artists, offering tributes to the popularity of the webcomic that has been running since 2010. VERDICT This multiage comic is worthy addition to any children's graphic novel collection.—Tony Hirt, Hennepin County Library, MN

Nerdy, cute and I loved it By Wayne A McCoy 'Gronk Volume 1' by Katie Cook is an adorable story of a monster who no longer wants to be a monster and the new family she finds herself with.Gronk decides to leave her fellow monsters behind because they just don't find her very scary. She's actually pretty cute with her mop of orangish-blonde hair. When Gronk chases a kitty, she meets up with Dale who overcomes her immediate reaction and makes friends. Dale lives with her cat, Kitty, and her huge dog, Harli. Once they meet, the story becomes more a series of comic strips about their daily life. Things like Gronk trying to play on the cat tree, or Dale showing Gronk elements of geek culture through movies and games. The seasons are represented as well. The book ends with a nice Gronk gallery by other artists. It was nerdy and cute and I really liked it. I loved all the referencs to Harry Potter and other things. The art is perfect for the story, and even though Gronk is a monster, there is nothing in here that kids couldn't read. I have Gronk Volume 2 on my reading list, and I'm looking forward to more adventures with Gronk.I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, Action Lab Entertainment, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this cute graphic novel.

She’s a little monster adopted by Dale after she left the monster world because she didn’t like being scary. The comics mostly cover how Gronk misunderstands or learns something about how humans live. My favorites are when Gronk interacts with the huge dog Harli or the cat Kitty. Gronk also has her own Kitteh, only that one is stuffed.Although the strips ran on the website in black and white, they were gorgeously colored and shaded by Kevin Minor for the book. I like reading the webcomic, but I love the art in full color! It seems more solid and real.Gronk is a wonderful stand-in for a toddler, making for lots of amusing encounters, beautifully cartooned. Some of it’s slapstick, some shared pop culture references, some Gronk playing, and some the humor of conflicting expectations, as when Gronk learns to use the toilet. The comics generally revolve around quiet observations of how silly behavior can be, with Gronk sometimes acting as a child would and inadvertently destroying parts of the home. This first volume contains the strips from the April 2010 beginning up through May 2011. Extras include a short “how Gronk began” page, guest strips, and fan art. (Review originally posted at ComicsWorthReading.com.)

Because when used correctly, this helpful, versatile, free app will make sure you never forget anything ever. Just like an elephant.I started using evernote a couple of weeks ago. Although I could see a lot of features, I could not learn or utilize all of them. There was this huge learning curve. Then I bought this book and on my very first skim discovered a ton of useful new features that I did not know existed on Evernote.I love the fact that this guide is formatted so nicely. Its not all confusing, its very neat and put together. With the awesome comments ,it makes it impossible for anyone not to understand what to do.
