Lucy and Henry Are Twins, by Elizabeth Winthrop

From School Library Journal Toddler—Short, rhyming phrases combined with bright, toddler-friendly illustrations perfectly capture the bond of twins Lucy and Henry. They move through their morning together, but it's clear that they are individuals. "Lucy swings. Henry clings." The artful spread shows the happy girl being pushed in a baby swing while her brother peers uncertainly from behind their dad's leg. The twins aren't old enough to be aware of or assert their own individuality. It is simply shown through the innocent playfulness of young siblings enjoying a day at the park together. Massey's artwork shines. The gouache, ink, and crayon illustrations are large and bright and depict cheery, round-faced toddlers who are perpetually in motion. VERDICT A first purchase for libraries serving our youngest readers.—Kelly Roth, Bartow County Public Library, Cartersville, GA

Review “In both the text and the illustrations, the narrative is pared down to essentials, making the book highly accessible to its audience. While older preschoolers may appreciate flights of fancy, very young children will enjoy seeing their everyday experiences reflected in this satisfying picture book.” —Booklist

So it's high praise to say that Lucy and Henry have been stowed beside my daughter's bed for now going on two weeks. She completes the rhymes and narrates what's happening in each scene. The words are sparse and so allow great space for discussion, interpretation, and imagining.I also like the thick, matte finished pages. They make for a nice tactile experience.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. It is a nice book for twins - it shows their special bond ... By Miranda This is a delightful book for very new readers. It is a nice book for twins - it shows their special bond while highlighting individuality. The illustrations are whimsical and colorful, engaging to small children. Although the age range on Amazon says 3-5, I think it is more appropriate for 1-3 year range.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. was hoping for more... By Amazon Customer this book has maybe 25 words in it....it rhymes opposites (giggles and wiggles) and by that it's showing, "They may be twins, but they don't do everything the same."I wanted a good book about boy girl twins... this isn't it.

Two Steps Back (It Takes Two), by Belle Payton

Review For A Whole New Ball Game: "The twin device is effectively deployed as each girl seeks to understand herself independently, in relation to her twin, and in the context of her new town; there's also appeal in the plot's sitcom elements of overheard conversations, secret observations, and all the uncertainty that comes with being a new place." (The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books)

About the Author Belle Payton isn’t a twin herself, but she does have twin brothers! She spent much of her childhood in the bleachers reading—er, cheering them on—at their football games. Though she left the South long ago to become a children’s book editor in New York City, Belle still drinks approximately a gallon of sweet tea a week and loves treating her friends to her famous homemade mac-and-cheese. Belle is the author of many books for children and tweens, and is currently having a blast writing two sides to each It Takes Two story.

CHAPTER

ONE

“Hello? Yes, this is Alexandra Sackett.” Alex put her hand to her right ear to muffle the sounds of the food court. “Yes. I—I did? I did? Oh my gosh, thank you! Yes! Yes! Yes, I will! Thank you! Bye!” She clicked off her phone and stared at it in disbelief. Her friend Emily Campbell had paused in mid-sip of her raspberry smoothie. “What’s going on, Alex? Who was that?” Alex clutched her phone with both hands as though she expected it to leap away from her. “I won,” she said quietly. “I won?” Her voice grew stronger. “I won!” “That is so awesome!” squealed Emily, bouncing up and down in her chair. “Congratulations! Um, what did you win?” Alex took a breath and composed herself. She looked at her friend, her green eyes shining. “That was the assistant to Marcy Maxon, the TV reporter.” “Marcy Maxon! I totally know who that is! She’s a celebrity! Why did her assistant call you?” “I won the essay contest, Em! The one for KHXA’s ‘Tomorrow’s Reporters Today’ series? I wrote an essay, and Marcy Maxon’s assistant just told me that I was selected to be a kid reporter. I get to write, produce, and star in a feature story, and it’s going to air next Sunday night! She said to check my e-mail, because they’ll be sending me all the details.” “Alex, that is absolutely and completely amazing!” said Emily. “Everyone in Ashland watches that segment! I’ve never known any of the kids who’ve done it, though. I can’t believe I know you!” Alex beamed at her friend. She loved that Emily seemed so genuinely happy for her, and it was fun to hear Emily’s enthusiastic words in her pretty Texan drawl. Ever since Emily’s best friend, Lindsey Davis, had started spending most of her time with her boyfriend, Alex and Emily had grown even closer. Emily leaped out of her chair and came around the table to give Alex a big congratulatory hug. “What are we celebrating?” asked a voice behind them. Alex slackened her grip on Emily and turned to see who it was. She gasped with surprise. Luke Grabowski was standing right there between their table and the smoothie counter. He looked impossibly gorgeous in a faded black T-shirt and khaki shorts. Behind him were two of his friends that Alex didn’t know. The three of them were holding paper cups from a fancy coffee place across the way, and Luke had a book under one arm. Of course he has a book with him, Alex thought. He was not just beautiful; he was also smart. And funny. And nice. In short, perfect. Luke was her twin sister Ava’s tutor. Alex had had a crush on him from the moment she’d first met him, but no one in the world knew it, she was positive. Well, except maybe Emily and Lindsey, because she might have mentioned to them that she had been talking to a high school boy—she couldn’t help gushing a little! “Oh, hi!” she said, but her voice came out all squeaky. She didn’t dare look into his gorgeous blue eyes, so instead she focused her gaze on the coffee he was holding. Drinking coffee was such a high school thing. She’d never really liked it much, but she immediately resolved to add “try coffee again” to her to-do list. “So did you guys just win the lottery?” Luke prompted. “We heard the squealing across the food court.” Alex giggled. She raised her eyes to look at Luke, and then quickly looked away, overcome with bashfulness. She wasn’t usually at a loss for words. On the contrary, Ava often told her she talked way too much and too quickly, but there was something about being in the presence of a crush that made her shy and awkward. And Luke was simply too handsome to look at for too long. It was like staring at the sun or something. But she recovered enough to introduce Emily. “Nice to meet you, Emily,” Luke said, his voice as smooth as melted chocolate. “And this is Pete, and that’s Brandon. We were just loading up on caffeine before we hit the books.” He held up his cup of coffee. “But tell us what the big celebration is all about,” he said. “Oh, ha-ha,” said Alex. “It’s no big deal.” She tried not to blush, although she knew she must be turning the same shade as Emily’s smoothie. Emily stepped up and saved her. “No big deal? Yeah, right! It’s a huge deal! I was congratulating Alex because she just won an essay contest! She’s going to be a kid reporter for KHXA. Marcy Maxon’s assistant just called her!” “Wow!” said Luke. He put an arm around Alex’s shoulder and gave her a little squeeze. She gulped. “Awesome!” said Brandon. Alex felt herself flush even more deeply. She couldn’t think of a thing to say, but she knew that it was her turn to speak. Her eyes landed on Luke’s coffee. “So, um, how’s your coffee?” she asked. Lame, lame, lame. What a dumb, stupid, idiotic question. “I haven’t tried it yet,” said Luke. He took a sip and made a face. “It’s actually awful,” he said, after swallowing with difficulty. “I think they gave me someone else’s order. It tastes like there’s pumpkin spice or something in here. They put pumpkin in everything this time of year!” “I love pumpkin spice!” said Alex quickly, and then mentally kicked herself. What if he thought that was babyish or something? “Here, have it then,” said Luke, handing his cup to her with an easy grin. “I’ll pick up a more manly drink on my way out.” “Thanks!” said Alex. Say something, say anything, keep the conversation going. “So, are you enjoying the book you’re reading?” she asked. “What book? Oh, this?” He held it up for them to see the cover. The title was Circuitry. Alex had no clue what circuitry was. “It’s scintillating,” said Luke with a grin. Scintillating. He had such a huge vocabulary! And obviously he loved circuitry, whatever that was. Alex made a mental note to study up on the subject. “Well, congrats again, Al. See you soon.” And he and his friends ambled off. Alex set the coffee down on the table and then fell into her chair. She stared at Emily. “That was Ava’s tutor,” she said. “I figured,” said Emily. “Wow, he is just the cutest thing ever. And he gave you his coffee!” Alex stared down at the coffee drink. “He did, didn’t he?” she mused. “And he called me Al.” “Sounds like he has a thing for you,” teased Emily. “Maybe you should ask him to Homecoming.” “Oh, yeah, right,” scoffed Alex. “By the way, when is Homecoming?” “In a few weeks,” said Emily. “And I’m waiting for Greg Fowler to work up his nerve and ask me to go with him. That boy is so shy.” “Does everyone at Ashland Middle School go with a date?” asked Alex. She still felt like a newcomer to the school. She’d moved here to Ashland, Texas, from Boston with her family this past July. “No, most people just go with friends and stuff,” said Emily. “Although Corey and Lindsey will be going as a couple, for sure.” As if Alex needed to be told that! She’d had a tiny crush on Corey O’Sullivan, Lindsey’s boyfriend, a while ago, but she was definitely over that. “How do their parents feel about their getting back together?” asked Alex. Lindsey’s and Corey’s parents had gone into the restaurant business together and had had a falling-out last year. “I think they’re fine now,” said Emily. “They seem to have reached a shaky truce. And business at Lindsey’s family’s restaurant has picked up ever since the health department cited the chain across the street from them for health code violations. Hey. You listening?” Emily waved a hand in front of Alex’s face. Alex snapped back to attention. “Sorry,” she said. “I was just thinking about Luke. It was really nice of him to give me his coffee. He could have returned it and gotten another one.” She took a sip of the coffee and wrinkled her nose. “Well, he definitely seems to like you,” said Emily, taking a noisy last slurp of her smoothie. “Oh, no, he’s just nice like that to everyone,” said Alex casually. But inside, her hopes soared. Did Emily mean he seemed to like like her? Could he possibly be interested in her? Sure he was in high school, but he was a sophomore. That was only three grades higher than hers. “Come on, let’s go to Cooper and Hunt and try on makeup!” said Emily, standing up and collecting their stuff to throw away. “After all, you’re going to be on television!” In the excitement of running into Luke, Alex had temporarily forgotten about that. Winning the contest and having a high school boy possibly harbor a secret crush on her—this was definitely the best day ever!

Full Moon on the Rise (Emerson Fox Academy Book 2), by Natalie Carlisle

About the Author Having developed a love for reading, writing, and drawing at a very young age, Natalie has often been described as being “creative and artistic.” Spending most of her free time caught up in the make-believe world, whether it was something she read or something she wrote, because she enjoyed the adventure and mostly the happily-ever-after endings. To this day, she still loves the happily-ever after endings. When she isn’t curled up on a couch reading; writing a poem, short-story or these days a new young adult novel; or getting her hands covered with paint and oil pastels, she can be found running; taking pictures of nature; watching her favorite movies like Grumpy Old Men, Turner and Hooch and Sweet Home Alabama; or simply just spending quality time with her husband and their two American Bull Dogs. Though currently residing in New Jersey, Natalie makes frequent trips back to her hometown in Pennsylvania.

Im not sure if one book has been written before, i cant see but it does feel like im playing catch up.Emerson Fox is a school especially for shape shifters. Mainly to get them to learn to control the shifting so they can be safe when they go into "normal" society. Some education is done too!For some reason Werewolves are hated, feared and killed on sight. We follow Kale who initially joined the school to protect younger brother Scout. Somehow along the way, Kale has discovered he is a werewolf. He has to keep this as hush hush as possible - not easy when the way shifters change in this book is by emotions and adrenaline. The students wear a wristband to stop them from shifting, but it lights up if the wearer, had they not been wearing it, would have shifted.Kale seems to attract trouble! There are shifters out there determined to expose him.First he trips a trap in the woods specifically to hold werewolves. Former student shifters are taking advantage of this to try and make him reveal his werewolf side, but Kale manages to escape this time by Kit, his on-off girlfriend, and Miller, the guy Kit is imprinted with, despite no romantic interest -again, not sure how this happened. The trap releases poison, so Kale is once again in the Infirmary with Mrs Fox who knows what he is and helps him.Again, somewhere along the way, Kale has discovered he's adopted and has a brother, Trey, who have already met. He finds out more about his birth parents, who were murdered, and learning more about who he is.its definetly a YA book, and like i say, i think there may be a book previous to this, but it wasn't signalled as a series when i signed to review it!A few swear words, but nothing other than that, which is what indicates a YA to me.Written pretty well, likeable characters.Read on behalf of Tasty tours for an honest review

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Loved this book just as much as the first one! By Amazon Customer After reading the 1st book, The Shifted, the suspense of how things were going to play out for Kale was killing me. I couldn't wait another minute to get this book. I found myself missing sleep just to find out what would become of Kale and the rest of his kind. Fascinated by Holland's tough guy personna, which may not be so tough after all. Could he really have a heart or does he have some selfish motive? Simply curious to see him, Kale, Scout, Kit, Ms. Fox, Lynch...all these characters who are on Kale's side, set the example for the next phase of shifter and werewolf relationships. This story left me intrigued for what happens to Kale and Kit now with Miller involved. How will Scout react to all the truths? What really happens to Kylee and why does she want Kale dead so bad? The questions go on making this series so interesting, grasping for what will become of each character, how will their life truly end up and who really is on Kale's side.I can't wait for another book in the series. Natalie's talent for writing goes beyond words. She has the ability to provide an easy read, pull the reader in with such an imaginative storyline devulging some very thrilling events. Her words bring the concept of shapeshifting and werewolves to life mixed with love, lies & deceit, irresponsibility, inexperience, fear and yet kindness. Loved this book just as much as the first!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Very Entertaining! By PamM Kale has to hide what he is. If they find out he is a werewolf he will be killed. Someone wants him dead anyway and he has to keep his emotions under control to keep his secret. He also has to deal with his adopted mom disappearing, his brother leaving and the girl he loves is imprinted on someone else. He doesn't want to hurt anyone but his life is in danger. He has to see just how strong he is and how much he can take or he may break.I really enjoyed this book. I will admit I was a little lost at first but after I got settled into the story it hooked me right in. Kale has so much going on I don't know how he keeps everything together. He doesn't know for sure who he can trust and it seems everyone he loves is leaving him. He finds out a few secrets about his past he didn't know and that really effects him. He didn't ask to be a werewolf but he is doing the best he can. I will say I hated one of the teachers so bad and wanted Kale to change and kill him. It was fascinating to see what everyone changed into as there is many different creatures. I was happy to see how he learned to trust people he thought weren't his friends. Kit I wasn't sure about till towards the end. I could tell she cared about Kale but wasn't sure how much. This book has some action and lots of intrigue. I would recommend any fans of paranormal to read this. And I have to say I love the cover.

A great story for sleepy little pirates By Kid Kyoto Our girls love this new addition to our library and regularly ask for it.It's a simple story in the the vein of Goodnight Moon, a sleepy child is getting ready for bed and says goodnight to all his toy pirates as he imagines one last adventure before going to sleep. At times the rhymes are a bit lazy (the tide is in/tuck you in) but the cute illustrations and gentle message of 'go to sleep!" make up for it.Happy to have bought it!

After escaping Horrorland, the kids ended up in Panic Park. A world with no color, only black& white. There are not safe there, as the park is the home of the villain, The Menace. The sixteen kids have to have their fears and make unlikely allies before they can escape. This is a great ending to the series. All the characters get to play apart in the foiling of The Menace's plains. There are a few times where I had to laugh at the Menace. He was scary at all, just down right silly. I still recommend reading "The Streets of Panic Park."

By Miss Faye To be honest, I bought this book for two reasons:1) Slappy is my favorite character, and since the book listed him in an active role I naturally wanted to read it.2) The cover is the most badass piece of art I've EVER seen on a Goosebumps book. I've never seen anything like it! I love the cover so much that I want to blow the image up and stick it on my wall. The plot is simple enough, but the way it's told is a little...well, convoluted. There's about sixteen heroes/heroines running around in one big group throughout the story, and if you haven't read all the Goosebumps books you won't know who half of them are. (Trust me, I had to use the fan-made wiki for some of them.) There's also a small trope of villains from HorrorLand/other Goosebumps tales that show up later on to accompany the main villain, too. The main villain, called The Menace, is what I can only describe as "extremely kooky". Kooky characters can be fun to read about, but this guy got me annoyed within ten pages after his entrance. To my relief, he's destroyed in the end and we never have to see him in another story ever again. No, the twist ending doesn't involve him, either. Good riddance. And, uh, *spoiler*, I guess.Admittedly, I read Goosebumps books to laugh, because I consider them a cheesy, campy bit of fun; they're the literary equivalent of eating a Ho-Ho when I could be eating an actual slice of home-made cake. This one, though, was like eating some weird off-brand Ho-Ho. So picture this: The Menace's plan is to make the kids so scared that their fright-fueled energy will transport the universe Panic Park resides in to the normal GB universe, which gets rid of Horrorland (which it coincidentally resides over the exact spot Panic Park once stood, making this possible somehow) and makes both universes blend together so our villain can take over the world and not be stuck in some time-capsuled dimension filled with shadow people from 1974. Y'know, just the usual villain fare. He also turns one kid into a shade, just to prove how scary he is to the kids, but really anyone who turns into those are practically written out of the story so you can keep track of who's who. Two-thirds into the book, The Menace sends the group of minor villains to scare the beejeezus out of our heroes, and it works for a bit, because the villains are totally enjoying tormenting the people who wronged them last time. Sadly, this mostly involves looking around a hall of mirrors and not being on/near the carousel from hell that the cover depicted. I literally waited all book for that scene to come up. I mean, who WOULDN'T want to read about the heroes stumbling into a carousel and becoming surprised when it starts to move, and then panicking when the horses' manes burst into flame? And then a familiar voice taunts them from a nearby plastic flaming horse, telling them that they'll never escape? I mean, come on, that can't just be me, right...? Admit it, you want to read that, too. It's better than what actually happened. So pretty quickly the minor villains join forces with the heroes, because aw snap, the The Menace means to leave the surviving kids and the minor villains to rot away in Panic Park as prisoners! So the heroes learn that laughter is the key to defeating the Menace and go to do just that, with the villains tagging along. The dimension starts to disappear and they all run for the one building The Menace told them to stay away from (because it would kill them), and voilà, they're home! I won't spoil what the twist really is, but in my opinion it could've been much better. My version would have the kids end up in another parallel dimension. Overall, I'd say this book is...okay. The plot is one I haven't read in a kid's book before, so it gets points for some creativity, and I did enjoy the banter between the minor villains, but the execution is sorta flat and the villain's personality leaves me cold (and not in a spooky sense). I think this story could have been written better, with some better detail about the supposed parallel universe Panic Park resides in, and more interaction with the minor villains would've been a huge plus. Also, even though there were about seven villains in the Hall of Mirrors, only four are mentioned continuously while the rest are basically dropped from the story. Writer beware - don't write in so many characters you forget they were there!

This is a collection of Christmas stories to warm your heart!

If you're like me, you love the season of Christmas: the festive atmosphere, the trees, the gifts, the feasting, the songs. People seem to be kinder to each other, and there are gatherings with family and friends. However, there is a danger. We can become so wrapped up in the celebration that we forget the true meaning of Christmas - that Christ came to provide for us eternal life, and the babe in the manger was just a prelude to the Savior on the cross.

It is my hope that this little audiobook will help you recapture the joy of the season. May God bless you, and may you have a wonderful Christmas.
