Just a Dream 25th Anniversary Edition, by Chris Van Allsburg

From Publishers Weekly Two-time Caldecott Medalist Van Allsburg reaches a new pinnacle of excellence in both illustration and storytelling in his latest work. Since his first book, The Garden of Abdul Gasazi, appeared just over a decade ago, he has spun many strange and fantastic modern fairy tales, all of which spill over the edge of reality into magnificent dreamscapes. Here Van Allsburg introduces Walter, a boy who imagines the future as a marvelous time, with tiny airplanes that can be parked on the roof of your house and robots that take care of all your work for you. In the present, however, Walter is a litterbug who can't be bothered to sort the trash for recycling and laughs at Rose, the girl next door, because she receives a sapling for her birthday. One night, when Walter goes to sleep, his bed travels to the future. But he finds neither tiny airplanes nor robots, only piles of trash covering the street where he used to live, acres and acres of stumps where forests used to stand, rows and rows of great smokestacks belching out acrid smoke, and many other environmental nightmares. Van Allsburg renders each of these chilling scenarios in elaborate, superbly executed two-page spreads that echo the best work of M. C. Escher and Winsor McKay (creator of the Little Nemo comic strips). Walter and his bed land right in the middle of the action in each of these hallucinatory paintings, heightening the visual impact and forcing a hard look at the devastation surrounding Van Allsburg's protagonist. An awakened Walter, jolted by his dream, changes his ways: he begins to sort the trash and, like Rose, plants a tree for his birthday. Then his bed takes him to a different future, one where people tend their lawns with powerless mowers and where the trees he and Rose have planted stand tall and strong beneath a blue sky. Not only are Just a Dream 's illustrations some of the most striking Van Allsburg has ever created, but the text is his best yet. Van Allsburg has sacrificed none of the powerful, otherworldly spirit that suffuses his earlier works, and he has taken a step forward by bringing this spirit to bear on a vitally important issue. His fable builds to an urgent plea for action as it sends a rousing message of hope. All ages. Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal Gr 2–5—The 25th-anniversary edition of Van Allsburg's plea for environmental awareness still strikes a chilling chord. A boy's flippant attitude toward the environment results in a night of dreams that offer a glimpse into a bleak, all-too-real future where trees are seen as fodder for toothpicks, where the ocean has been depleted of all but the tiniest fish, and where smog prevents anyone from seeing the Grand Canyon. Paired with the quiet, matter-of-fact text, Van Allsburg's striking visuals of pipes bellowing smoke and twisting, car-packed highways will leave readers with a sense of unease and even, at times, horror. Kids will also appreciate the free audio version of this story (available with an access code provided within the book) on the publisher's website, read by the author with accompanying sound effects and music.—Mahnaz Dar, School Library Journal

Chris Van Allsburg's illustrations are fabulous, as always, and greatly add to the drama of the story. I am an environmental educator and read this book to students (5th-6th grade) at the end of every week at outdoor school. This is a great book to read aloud, especially because of the way the illustrations are separate from the text. What I love about this book is that it is in the end very hopeful. Walter's first dreams of the future show a world of great environmental problems, based on his actions of not caring in the present; but when he changes his ways, the future changes also. I like to emphasize this when reading it to students: The future is not written yet, but we are creating it every day with the choices we make. This is definitely a children's environmental literature classic, along with Dr. Seuss' "The Lorax" and Lynne Cherry's "The Great Kapok Tree," but is even better for older children.

Well some people might not be ready to see it. This story shows how the earth has to be protected by everyone.Walter is a young boy that doesn't care much about the earth. One day he has a donut bag that he tosses on a fire hydrant. That night he is watching a TV show about a boy in the future. He sees that people will have little planes and robots. So that night he has a dream, his bed takes him years into the future. He finds that the world will be totally different. Walter notices that trees need to be protected because they are being cut down for wrong purposes. Walter finds out about what pollution does to the world. And Walter witnesses advances in science. Walter's bed takes him back to the present. Walter decides that he wants to make the world a better place. And for his birthday he gets a small tree like his neighbor got for her birthday. Then that night his bed takes him away, to the future, again. I thought the book was interesting because a boy who doesn't think much about the world sees what the world will be like if it is not protected. It was cool that he was moved by what he had seen. And I think I would have tried to clean up too.

By A Customer As a second grade teacher, I was able to teach the importance of recycling and respecting mother earth with this story. The children were captivated by the book and many picked up trash later on the playground. I have even noticed less trash and more recycled goods in the classroom. I recommend this book for children of all ages and even some adults!

This book is still in print By Peggy Vincent Shopping for a book for the 2yo child of a friend, I was delighted to find this long-time favorite of my own children is still in print. Picture-heavy, at the expense of words, the book is best suited for kids from 2-5, not for those who can read.Rosie is a rather clueless chicken who leaves the coop to take a little stroll. Waiting for her is the proverbial fox, but every time he makes his move, some mishap unwittingly initiated by Rosie puts him out of commission. Rosie wanders on, completely unaware of the mayhem left in her wake - and gets back to the chicken coop none the worse for wear. The fox, on the other hand, probably thinks switching to vegetarianism might be a good idea.

17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Since I found my Rosie, how can I be blue? By E. R. Bird A staple of humorous stories for years has been the idea of the oblivious protagonist. How many cartoons have you watched where the well meaning but bumbling hero comes within a hair's breath of death as some watchful soul (either someone who wants to hurt our hero or help them) accidentally falls into madcap trap after trap after trap? Tons. After all, it's funny stuff. Well "Rosie's Walk" ascribed to that idea way back in 1968 when it was first published. The tale of blithe Rosie and the doe eyed fox that wants to eat her is as old as the hills and still just as funny. Rosie decides one day to go for a walk. As she does so a hungry fox gets wind of the plump little hen and decides to pounce upon her for his (her?) supper. Rosie takes no notice of this impending danger, and the book is simply a series of vignettes of chicken and fox locked in that eternal conflict of hunter and prey. The text, such as it is, is very simple. It never makes a single mention of the fox, choosing to only describe Rosie's walk. In fact, one could write the entire book out in a single sentence since there are only 32 words in total. It is a deceptively simple book. So what makes this such a fabulous story? Well, what Pat Hutchins overdoes in brevity, she makes up for with some of the most elaborate pen and ink drawings I've seen in a long time. Rosie, for one, is a joy. Her expression never changes for a moment. This hen is oblivious to not only the fox, but also the world at large. She walks about with her eyes at half-mast wearing an expression of deep disinterest. If you happen to know a typical teenager, that teenager in chicken form would be Rosie. The fox, on the other hand, makes up for all the emotions that nonplussed Rosie lacks. This is a beautiful creature, sporting an elaborately illustrated body and soft melting eyes. It doesn't hurt that every picture in this book looks like it was fun for the author/illustrator to draw. Birds flying in the trees are a complex amalgamation of dots, patterns, and slinky black lines. Even the grasshoppers in the fields are elaborate combinations of circles and lines. Rosie's feathers alone are so well organized and detailed that I'd half like to frame her and put her up on my wall. And though the gags directed against the poor schlimazel of a fox are obvious, they're well executed. Hutchins has a wonderful sense of timing in this story. This book is truly a class act. For any beginning reader, this is a tale to both impress and humble. A really wonderful picture book.

Blankenship If I were forced to pick the 100 best children's books ever written or published, (and a very difficult task that would be,) it is very likely that this one would be on the list. It is almost the perfect book for the pre-reader and the young child. It would be very difficult to find anything to critical about from cover to cover. This is a very simple (yet surprisingly sophisticated, from a humorous point of view) of a chicken by the name of Rosie. Rosie is probably one of the most clueless hens ever hatched. She takes a walk one day and is immediately stalked by a fox in search of a meal.During the entire stroll the poor fox makes effort after effort to catch her and Rosie is completely oblivious to this fact. After each attempt we watch as the fox receives one comeuppance after another is a wonderfully hilarious way. The poor critter! At the end of the day is chased from the barnyard by a swarm of angry bees as Rosie goes into eat her dinner...still completely unaware of the numerous disasters she has unconsciously avoided all day.The story is funny but I have to tell you that it is the art work here that, for me, is the real star of the show. The author has used just three colors throughout the book; orange, yellow and olive green. His use of shade and light is masterful. I myself paint a bit, and I have tried over and over again to copy this man's work and technique in reference to his colors and shades, and let me tell you, it is not easy! The entire text here contains only thirty-one words but due to the illustrations the adult reader can spend quite a lot of time pointing different things out to the young listener and add bits here and there to the story. I may have read this one to kids at least 20 times and the story has never been the same or presented the same during all those times.Of course the true test of a great children's read is if the child likes it. I can assure you that it is a rare one that does not love this thing. This work was originally published in 1968 by Bodley Head, UK, and Macmillian, USA and as far as I can find it has been in continuous print since. This is most certainly one you will want to add to your child's library.Don BlankenshipThe Ozarks

Colonial Voices: Hear Them Speak, by Kay Winters

From School Library Journal Starred Review. Grade 3–6—Colonial Bostonians introduce themselves through free-verse vignettes that describe their work and their feelings about the current political situation. As errand boy Ethan moves about the city, he links the people together. From the printer, who distributes the news of a gathering to be held, to the baker, the school mistress, the shoemaker, the milliner, and so on, he covers a territory that ends up at the Old South Meeting House. There, the Sons of Liberty decide to protest the governor's decision regarding some shipments of British tea. Winters's poems flow well, but they employ somewhat complex vocabulary and syntax. A glossary is included to help children with terms such as "fripperies," "journeyman," "limner," "hackle," and "wag-on-the-wall." Historical notes go into more detail about each person's job and compare similar positions in the northern and southern colonies. Both men and women are portrayed; while most characters are white, a Native American woman and a male African slave are also featured. The political sentiments described include Patriots, Loyalists, and some in-between. The watercolor and ink illustrations add humor and drama through shifting perspectives and well-detailed settings full of period details. Ethan appears in each picture, and children will enjoy following his route and sharing his reactions to the varied scenes he observes. A unique presentation for all libraries.—Lucinda Snyder Whitehurst, St. Christopher's School, Richmond, VA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist *Starred Review* Winters, who so successfully captured the common folk in Voices of Egypt (2005), offers an even more layered and textured group of voices here. It’s December 16, 1773, and “Boston is about to explode.” The immediacy of the words draws readers in, as Ethan, an errand boy to the printer, sets off with papers to deliver to the patriots in the area. So begins a glorious introduction to the Boston Tea Party, and so much more.  Each handsome two-page spread brings forth another voice from the time as Ethan delivers his message. There’s the printer, whose presses tell of British subjugation; the baker and the shoemaker, who are secret patriots; the milliner, who says, “Pay the tax! Count your blessings. I prefer the King to a rabble-rousing mob!” The tavern keeper, the blacksmith’s slave, the Native American basket maker, and others also have their say, until the patriots gather at the harbor and “speak out for liberty.” Winter’s strong, moving text is supported by a thoughtful design that incorporates the look of historical papers, and rich paintings capture the individuals and their circumstances as well as what’s at stake. The back matter, offering additional information on the tea party and on each speaker’s profession, makes this even more useful. This does for colonial times what the 2008 Newbery Medal book, Good Masters, Sweet Ladies, does for the Middle Ages. Grades 4-7. --Ilene Cooper

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Rutgers University Project on Economics and Children By Yana V. Rodgers Shoemakers who pull teeth for customers with toothaches, and barbers who apply leaches to bruises and let blood drain to cure a fever. These are but two of the many interesting tidbits about occupations during the Colonial period that make this book an enjoyable read for children and adults alike. As the central premise of the book, young Ethan, a printer's errand boy, makes his way around a number of local businesses in Boston on that fateful day in December 1773 leading up to the Boston Tea Party. He is charged with delivering news about the tea tax, Governor Hutchinson's decisions, and the protest meeting that evening in the Old South Meeting House. At each of Ethan's stops, the reader hears about the political views and job responsibilities of the colonial merchants through their own voices. The stunning watercolor-and-ink illustrations, the themed typeset and layout, and the map of Colonial Boston inside the book's covers reinforce the book's historical theme. A concerted effort to add vocabulary from the Colonial era and detailed occupational descriptions in the historical notes further contribute to the book's high marks on substantive content. Although Colonial Voices: Hear Them Speak mostly covers the economics concept of jobs, its focus on the Boston Tea Party also make it a useful vehicle for teaching about monopolies and taxes. Most readers will finish the book more informed about this pivotal event in Colonial history, and relieved that we do not need to visit the shoemaker and barber for our healthcare needs.

Kids can handle paragraphs -- go ahead and write in standard English.I'm working on a summer 2012 homeschool unit for my gang of boys on colonial/pre-revolutionary days in New England, then visiting Boston and surroundings on our summer trip.So I've read a lot of the children's books that are available on this time period, and will be reading still more. This book is great in the illustration department -- the illustrations are well-researched and historical. Very nice. The written portion of this book is a yawner -- the text is so superficial (and in free verse!) that it's not instructive or memorable.Instead of this, I recommend: Betsy Maestro's "Liberty or Death" Dennis Fradin's "Let it Begin Here" Rosalyn Schanzer's "George vs. George" Pamela Duncan Edwards' "Boston Tea Party"Good historical notes section in this book, a map, and a surprisingly good glossary. And very fine illustrations.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Colonial Voices: Hear Them Speak -- December 2008 By Ann Leach "Colonial Voices" is an imaginative and eye-catching way to introduce children to American history. Kay Winters does this by creating stories "told" by children who lived in Boston just before the American Revolution. I was especially impressed that these stories didn't avoid some of the hard truths about being a child in Colonial Day -- the Errand Boy who was on his own when his mother died in childbirth and his Dad was at sea; the Silversmith's Apprentice who was orphaned, as well. The Tavern Keeper tells her story when, with her daughter, she takes over the tavern upon another loss. Winters doesn't mince words in "The Basket Trader" or "The Blacksmith's Slave," but does so at a level that children can appreciate. This book is a perfect example of Kay Winters' ability to write gripping stories for children without talking down to them. She gives her young readers a chance to take a trip through colonial Boston in an exciting --and dangerous -- time so often rushed through in normal history classes.Larry Day's illustrations beautifully capture the mood and color of the period, and show a huge amount of research in his use of clothing, household details, and tools of the time.

This introduction to space science for children uses the story of Neil deGrasse Tyson's life and career to frame the journey.Catch the thrill of the cosmos and space science through the life of Neil deGrasse Tyson—the popular astrophysicist, science communicator, and host of FOX-TV’s Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey. In language neither too simple nor overly technical, author CAP Saucier interweaves up-to-date information about the universe and the science of astrophysics with a biographical portrait of the famous astrophysicist. Quotes from Tyson appear throughout each chapter, personalizing the science. Illustrated with striking images from the Hubble Space Telescope, the story of one man's successful life in space science may inspire kids to follow a similar path. As Tyson makes clear, there is still much to do for future space scientists: diverting asteroids, unraveling the mystery of dark matter, finding life elsewhere in the universe, and more!

Explore the Cosmos like Neil deGrasse Tyson: A Space Science Journey, by CAP Saucier

From School Library Journal Gr 5–8—Combining biographical information about Neil deGrasse Tyson, the popular American astrophysicist, with an exploration of space science, this work seeks to interest middle school readers in both. Tyson's fascination with the universe came early, and his enthusiasm is exhilarating and contagious. His many quotes frame the chapters on familiar planets and the farther, less familiar outer reaches of space. Up-to-date information culled from unmanned space probes makes this work useful for research. However, the organization of the material, interspersing biographical tidbits with astronomical data, results in an often confusing reading experience. The author's habit of referring to Tyson by his first name and including comments about his opinions on music, films, and wine, as well as other fascinating but irrelevant facts, dilute interest in the cosmos-related material. A good bibliography and glossary will help those doing school reports, and the chapter notes are often beneficial. VERDICT Of value for curriculum-related research.—Eva Elisabeth VonAncken, formerly at Trinity-Pawling School, Pawling, NY

Review “From the big bang to the formation of planets, this book delightfully weaves together the story of modern astronomy with the life story of how a young African American inner-city kid grew up to be one of the most recognized and influential personalities in all of science.”   —Henry Ferguson, astronomer, the Space Telescope Science Institute“Neil deGrasse Tyson is one of those rare scientists who is a household name—and for good reason. His larger-than-life personality and passion for unraveling the mysteries of the cosmos compel us to marvel at the world around us. Saucier trains her lens on ‘the universe within’ the great astrophysicist and popularizer, and the result is as fun as it is educational. From Tyson’s boyhood observations of the night sky from the rooftop of his family’s New York City apartment to his research into how galaxies form, Saucier charts the meteoric rise of a man who reached for the stars—and caught them.”  —Kate Wong, Scientific AmericanPraise for The Lucy Man: The Scientist Who Found the Most Famous Fossil Ever! "Engaging and well-illustrated... it will hopefully inspire young readers to become evolutionary biologists and to go out and make their own important discoveries." -Quarterly Review of Biology"This book should give anyone, expert or beginner, a better appreciation of [Johanson] and his work. It would make a fine gift to a young aspiring fossil-hunter and a worthy addition to any school library." -National Center for Science Education Reports"Any youngster showing an interest in such things will be immersed for hours in this book." -Bookviews  "This handy little book delves into the basic science of human evolution... Saucier breaks down a difficult subject into an easily digestible format... We expect to see more from this author in the near future." -Sacramento Book Review"This book would be a wonderful supplement for a child who has had both theories removed from the school curriculum. Readers will feel like they were part of that fateful dig and will be able to sense the excitement felt when Lucy was found." -Portland Book Review

By Frogsong This is a nice little introduction to space science for children, as seen through the eyes of astrophysicist, Neil deGrasse Tyson. It starts out with a 13-year-old Neil deGrasse Tyson on the roof of an apartment building in the Bronx, in New York, stargazing and goes on to talk about his interest in the cosmos, growing up, his mentors, etc. There are black and white photos of Neil, as well as photos of stars, galaxies, and other space matter. This book goes on to talk about asteroids, black holes, dark energy, nebulae, other planets within our solar system and much more. If you have a child who is interested in the cosmos, he or she will love this book.

By Don Kidwell 'She thinks of the raw steak again, and how delicious it tasted..."My dear, are you going to bite me?" The Prince is half joking...' Whatever you do, don't mistake this for a children's book you'll want to read to your children before tucking them in bed! Bordering on satire, the book blends the zombie genre with age old fairy tales making for an amusing if somewhat scary tale. I already have "Blood Red" purchased for my next read as this series does entertain me.
