No, No, Kitten!, by Shelley Moore Thomas

From School Library Journal PreS-K—An imaginative kitten isn't satisfied with catnip and a soft place to sleep—no, this one also wants a puppy, a helmet, engines, gadgets, and lasers. This kitten wants to blast off into space. Anyone with a cat will be familiar with persistence of felines and so will not be surprised that no matter how often the young narrator repeats, "'No, no, no, Kitten!'" our hero won't give up until blastoff. Nichols's bold cartoon illustrations capture the impish expressions of the little girl's indefatigable pet and eager sidekick, Puppy, and kids will happily cheer them on in their antics. VERDICT A fun additional purchase.—Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Carroll County Public Library, MD

Review “Nichols's bold cartoon illustrations capture the impish expressions of the little girl's indefatigable pet and eager sidekick, Puppy, and kids will happily cheer them on in their antics.” –School Library Journal“Thomas's repetitious almost-rhymes make for a rollicking read-aloud… Nichols' digitally colored illustrations are the real stars of this simple tale of imagination. Kitten's cleanly paced mayhem is exhilarating… This kitten ably proves that misbehaving can get you pretty far.” –Kirkus Reviews

Myers The description of this book was somewhat lacking, but since I buy what seems like a hundred picture books a week for my 5 year old daughter, and we both loved the cover illustration, I gave it a go. So glad we did! The story is so comical, and the pictures are as funny as the story. We have read this so many times that my daughter, who can't read yet, has the whole thing just about memorized and can "read" it to me. Wonderful story! My daughter had the hiccups from laughing so loud and for son long. The book ends with the puppy who is shown in the corner seemingly starting to get into the same mischief - we'd love a sequel called "No, No, Puppy"! Wonderful book, highly recommended!

He is 3 years old and requests it many times when I Skype with him. I recently had to read it to him with a glass bowl on my head as a "helmet". Now, I wonder if you have any plans to make it into an app with narration? And when will we see what happens with Puppy?

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. wonderful book By Delia Linnet This book is delightful, hilarious, and cute. The kitten is quite a character! She persists in following her dreams despite getting discouraging messages from others, which seems like an important theme for kids. Told she can't have a pet puppy or play with engines or gadgets or go to Jupiter, she builds a spaceship and takes her pet puppy to Jupiter, and returns in triumph. She has lots of interest and lots of energy, and her antics are very entertaining.

Morris's worldbuilding, with its intricacy and its sensitivity to anthropological and mythological detail, inevitably reminds one of Ursula LeGuin.--Kathryn Hinds, The Healer's Choice. Phayaden is a shaman tormented with visions that come without ceremony—terrible images of war against the people of the Tashihyel. She fled to the obscurity of her small family clan—but cannot hide from these visions after inviting a god into her home. The demi-god Engidu must guide the war chief Tengis to a test that will transform him. Even he does not know if Tengis will die, or live to be the hero his people need. Tengis knows what his people need. He needs the support of the clans, and the shaman he loves for having a vision as great as his own. None of them know that this is one challenge where even a demi-god might need a shaman to survive. Cover Art, by Grant Searcey.

A Fascinating Fantasy Novella By Kathryn Hinds I read this absorbing, fascinating novella in one sitting and found myself still thinking about the characters and setting for days afterward. The author does an impressive job of invoking a Mongolia-like steppe society and creating a fully developed mythology as a matrix within which the characters pursue their goals. And I love the protagonist, Phayaden, a seemingly failed shaman who may or may not be mad, walking a thin line between this world and the spirit world, trying her best to fulfill her duty to her family even as a mysterious stranger pulls her into a conflict that ripples out far beyond anything she has previously known.

The interesting plot and intriguing story-line really sets a standard for other fantasy authors. Mab Morris is an incredible author that left me craving for another story.

Review of The Red Khémèresh By Jan Cooper The Red Khemeresh is the type of story that would garner accolades from many a college or university literary department. This author's extensive knowledge and research into exotic cutures and esoteric and metaphysical matters is evident on every page.

?This is the first time I'm taking the bus by myself. Mom packed me a snack --- and had me bring my sweater in case I get cold.? But Mom likely didn't imagine the adventure her little girl would have as she rides to her grandmother's house in this sweet picture book. While the bus is taking her down the streets, through a forest and into a pitch-black tunnel, the little girl encounters an assortment of animal characters who enliven her journey, including a goat who offers her a flower from a bouquet, a wolf child with whom she happily shares her cookies and a fox who attempts to pickpocket a beaver. Adding to the fun are lots of running visual gags, such as the changing headlines on the newspaper that hides one passenger's face, a sleeping sloth who mysteriously appears in different seats without ever having woken up and a nervous-looking turtle whose head and arms pop in and out of its shell. The interior of the bus covers each two-page spread, and award-winning author-illustrator Marianne Dubuc uses subtle colors and tiny details to draw in youngsters to the activity happening there. This book offers a potentially multilayered classroom reading experience: there is the terrific main story of the girl's trip, but there are also any number of mini stories playing out at the same time with each of the other characters. It would work beautifully as a jumping-off point for children to do some imaginary storytelling of their own.

The Bus Ride, by Marianne Dubuc

From School Library Journal Gr 1–2—Young Clara is going on a bus all by herself to visit her grandmother. Her mother takes her to the bus stop, and her grandmother picks her up at the other end. Clara appears to be perhaps eight years old and is quite confident to take her first solo ride. Most of the other passengers are animals—charming, anthropomorphized creatures who wear clothing or are carrying things that gives them individuality and personality. Clara interacts with the other riders—sharing cookies, accepting a flower—in simple, sweet ways. Even when she spots a pickpocket on the bus and thwarts the thief, Clara is an endearing and innocent child, and the encounter is related without tension or drama. The illustrations are fantastic—in multiple meanings of the word: imaginary, improbable, whimsical, and superb. The text is minimal, and some pages are wordless. Adults may have difficulty suspending their anxiety about such a young child traveling alone. VERDICT Though well written and wonderfully illustrated, the eclectic story is a bit thin.—Mary Hazelton, formerly at Warren & Waldoboro Elementary Schools, ME

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Fun Is In the Details By Pop Bop There are lots of picture books that are very appealing and that bear repeated readings even if they offer the same experience each time they are read. There's a reason why some books are favorites. But this book is a bit more because while it is simple and understated it is loaded with details that allow each new reading to be different from the last. Our heroine is taking her first bus ride alone; she's leaving her house to travel a few stops to visit grandmother. She's excited and prepared; this is big girl stuff. There is an interesting group of passengers already on the bus. At each stop some get off and others get on. Each passenger has some revealing details that suggest his or her own story. The passengers move and change from panel to panel. Little bits of funny business are drawn into the edges of the action. What's in the big box; who is that mouse talking to on his cell phone; why is that turtle so shy?The drawings aren't manic or crowded; this isn't "Where's Waldo?". But every little pencil stroke means something. As a consequence, you can read through the book quickly in order to get to grandmother's or you can go through it slowly and make up a dozen other stories around the edges of the main story. You don't have to, of course, and each bedtime mood is different, but it's nice to have a picture book that offers such subtle opportunity.A Nice Find. Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Might have been more interesting if it WAS a reimagining By Dione Basseri So, this is...okay? I had this problem, for myself, where I thought not much of interest was happening in this book. A young girl is going on a bus ride, which happens to be full of anthropomorphic animals. She has a few encounters before getting to her grandmother. Going into it, I was expecting this to be a Red Riding Hood variation. Especially when the wolves came on. But there's nothing there but the ride. The artwork does its best to keep the reader's attention. Each page is a bit different, telling the stories of the passengers, and how they interact. Not much of these interactions are interesting, but I think kids would like to point out the changes.Overall, I'm neither elated or disappointed with this book, except for one final thing, which is very subjective: I really dislike books of odd dimensions. Which is a terrible nit-pick, but they look so bad on shelves. There IS some reason for this book to be so long, at least; each page depicts the interior of a bus, which is similarly long. However, I was so neutral about it, to begin with, that my dislike of the format would actually be a deciding factor on purchase, for me.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Whimsical and engaging By T. Murrell Clara is riding the bus by herself for the very first time. She's on her way to her grandmother's house. She amuses herself by watching the other people on the bus, sharing her cookies, befriending a little wolf, and helping to catch a thief. She arrives at her destination to find her grandmother waiting to hear about her adventures. Colorful illustrations fill the whole page with the story in small print at the bottom. The pictures are soft, pencil type drawings that help create a story all on their own.Children will love the whimsical take on red riding hood. Parents will enjoy the less scary version of the story. The readers can also play guessing games to try to find out how each picture is different as they turn the pages. The book would work well in a classroom setting, as it could be used in several forms of literacy learning.I received this book free of charge from Children's Lit in exchange for my honest review.

Not a bad guide, worth grabbing while when it’s free By InfoHound Minecraft Traps: Minecraft Traps Handbook: Unbelievable Traps to Trick Players and Mobs by Ian The MinecrafterKindle Edition Free download, List price $2.99Publication Date: March 16, 2015This does seem to have a good selection of traps, but I found much of the description lacking, making them hard to follow. Some of the images are far too dark to see detail. The author could include more images to fully illustrate their ideas, not just tell us, ‘Oh, by the way, you can’t see it in this picture, but there is another piston or more stuff underneath.’If this is supposed to be a useful guide, make it useful by providing adequate illustrations and directions. Otherwise it stops being a guide a simply becomes a directory, only of use to the more experienced players.Grab this while it’s free, it’s worth studying to get ideas and a few directions, but it’s not really worth paying for until the directions are clearer and the illustrations improve in both quality and quantity. For quality, put your contraptions in a neutral background that contrasts with the materials the contraption is made of. EG if building with cobblestone, use grass background, not a cobblestone cave – too distracting, hard to distinguish what is contraption and what is ambient background noise.4 stars for potential content, needs work for 5 stars

The Sock Thief: A Soccer Story, by Ana Crespo

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—Felipe has a secret. On his morning walk to school in Brazil, he carefully exchanges juicy mangoes from his family's tree for his neighbors' drying socks. Many of the local animals are witnesses, including the rooster, who attempts to announce the disappearing socks with a swift "Cocoricó!" Felipe continues his journey and begins to stuff each sock with used newspaper, twisting and tying the materials into a firm round object. The mystery isn't under wraps for long, as Felipe presents the handmade sock ball to his school friends. Inspired by her father's childhood recollections, Crespo presents a charming story that not only appeals to futebol, or soccer, fans but also to those who possess a creative spirit. She provides a glossary with Portuguese words and scatters a few Portuguese animal sounds throughout the text. Gonzalez paints with a boldness that gives life to the Brazilian setting, adding a little bounce to this futebol-themed picture book. VERDICT A lively celebration of futebol, culture, and ingenuity.—Claire Moore, Darien Library, CT

Review "Gonzalez paints with a boldness that gives life to the Brazilian setting, adding a little bounce to this futebol-themed picture book. A lively celebration of futebol, culture, and ingenuity." School Library Journal, February 1, 2015"Bright colors, rounded shapes, and the commentary of early-rising animals who witness Felipe's pilfering add to the charm of the tale, and a glossary of Portuguese terms 'you can learn and practice with your friends' extends the fun." The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, June 1, 2015"Poverty in Brazil probably isn't as spotless as Gonzalez's artwork implies, but the feeling of intimacy and decency is welcome. Crespo's text has a mildly subversive touch--but in the service of the greater good, and it's clear by the end that the whole neighborhood believes in that greater good." A must-read book for every early childhood classroom and home with young children, that's what!As a former kindergarten teacher I highly recommend 'The Sock Thief'. And as a parent, I am loving how it shines a spotlight on creativity, ingenuity - and honesty and kindness. WOW...it hits every area we want to develop in our kids...and it does it with humor and sensitivity. And even the title makes me want to smile..This is a book that engages, entertains and educates...and you don't find that very often.Vivian KirkfieldAuthor of Show Me How! Children love the mysterious nature of the story and question why Felipe would take so many socks. When young readers see the characters playing soccer at the end, I'm sure they start devising a plan to make their own sock soccer ball! Don't let the title, The Sock Thief, fool you. This sweet book embraces concepts of creativity, resourcefulness, kindness, and community. I look forward to Anna's future books.
