Frustration overload By Ole-Kristian Bjerkeli I find it strange that nobody mentions that the buildup in this book is so so.On several occations the author tries to explain new functions in a formula that contains several other functions he has not yet explained. In order to understand the whole formula I had to skip several hundred pages forward in the book to find an explanations to those parts. There was even some functions I couldn't find in the index. Those I had to google before I could continue reading. When I got to page 400 I was so frustrated by the the increasing frequency of this problem so I closed the book for good.Perhaps it is a good reference book for the expert user, but I would not recommend it for someone that wants to learn Excel.

By OneMoreThing Once you start this series, you will not want to stop until you have read the entire saga. The authors are experts at building suspense and writing cliffhangers, so save yourself some money, and buy it all at once. My eight-year-old son is deeply invested in these characters, and I'm hooked, too. That said, these books are not the greatest literary works on the planet. They are full of stylistic inconsistencies, continuity errors (what color are Crowfeather's eyes?), and outright grammatical errors. Nevertheless, the stories themselves make up for the occasional lack of art in the telling of them, and I am glad to have been able to share them with my son.

28 of 34 people found the following review helpful. Great to a point -possible spoilers- By RookBlack I'm an 18 year old who has been a fan of the series since the release of the first book of the original series "Into the Wild". I loved the original series and still re-read them to this day. I am a die-hard warriors fan and probably always will be, so don't take this lightly when I say this series wasn't all that great. When I read the first book I was expecting something totally different than what I got. It wasn't a bad surprise, but definitely wasn't what I expected. I enjoyed it. This enjoyment lasted for about the first three books. Then in Dawn, something I really hated happened(I won't say what, just suffice to say I had to put the book down and wait a bit before I could continue reading). I began to become wary of the direction the series was headed in, but was still willing to go along for the ride. The momentum of the story kept me going and I still enjoyed the books. Then I got to the last one. The biggest disappointment in the warriors series for me.It would be an understatement to say that the finale of New Prophecy pales in comparison to that of Darkest Hour. They aren't even close. I began to suspect I wasn't going to get what I had hoped for when I had maybe a chapter left and they still hadn't resolved the true conflict of the story. The ending of the series seemed extremely rushed. There just wasn't the same suspense, or even the same flow. The finale starts like it might lead somewhere, but the end comes far too soon and just left me sitting there wondering "Is that really it? Really?" The truth is, my friend(another avid fan) and I often still joke about it.I won't say it is a bad series, because that's not true at all. It is worth reading. Just don't come in expecting anything like the original series. You won't get it.

19 of 23 people found the following review helpful. My son loves these books By J. Curll Ironically my mother bought the first two books for my son two years ago, and they sat on his shelf. His best friend read them and raved about them, so he finally gave them a try. He has devoured these books. For the first time ever I found myself saying, "I can't believe I'm saying this, but put that book down!" He's now on book four. He started today, Thursday, and I can pretty much guarantee he'll be done by Sunday and begging for the next one. He took the AR tests at school for the first three and answered every question correctly. I'm thrilled! (He also loved "The Looking Glass Wars" - wasn't as crazy about the sequel "Seeing Redd.")

P.K. Pinkerton and the Pistol-Packing Widows, by Caroline Lawrence

From Booklist In the third P. K. Pinkerton title, business is booming for 12-year-old detective P. K. in 1862 Virginia City. Things take an unexpected turn when P. K. is kidnapped and then hired by mysterious Opal Blossom to go to Carson City and investigate whether her fiancé, “Poker Face” Jace, who is also P. K.’s mentor, is two-timing her. There, amidst the political wheeling and dealing around Nevada’s impending statehood, P. K. discovers the woman Jace is courting. Violetta De Baskerville isn’t as she appears, and Jace’s life may be in danger, but P. K., a master of disguises, has secrets, too; and protecting them—and Jace—means deciding whom to trust and what to reveal before it’s too late. The Wild West setting again comes alive through colorful characters—both new and returning allies and foes, abundant period detail, and the ever-engaging, P. K., a half Sioux loner whose colloquial, lively account also incorporates issues from facing prejudice and past tragedy to finding the meaning of friendship, self-acceptance, and acceptance by others. A don’t-miss for series followers, who’ll enjoy learning more about P. K.’s history—and possible future—in this humorous, suspenseful, ultimately heartfelt tale. Grades 4-7. --Shelle Rosenfeld

It's not a great example of perfect report style grammar. But the writing is solidly in character all the time. It doesn't jump perspective like some other not so good children stories. I really love that it has a main character with what could be called a disability. And it doesn't really gimmick that up. It's just part of the character. And the character finds techniques to overcome it. Just awesome. That it's set in Virginia City, which is a relatively close, awesome ghost town is fantastic. If I had more ambition I would comb the books and make a map to follow next time we're there. That there are "cameos" of actual figures of historical significance, great.Creative, and all the hard work of making it cohesive and immersive is something I truly, really, deeply appreciate. Especially in a book I can share with my child.Re-reading some of my old favorites with my son, well I'm horrified at the misogyny, and lack of effort to engage with the reader as someone of intelligence (I'm not saying genius, but c'mon, kids are not dumb).

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Once again, a Winner By Hearth's Fyre I've raved about Caroline's earlier books and other series; now I have to continue promoting the great work she's doing with PK Pinkerton. Once again, this book is highly entertaining and educational BUT Caroline's work is so much more than that. She weaves together Great Ideas in ways that NO OTHER AUTHOR is attempting. Her work stands alone as a unique glimpse into areas of human nature that aren't often explored in literature. Read it and you'll see. Kids enjoy it; adults will be floored.

There were a few areas that began to feel a bit tedious, but all in all, a fun read with a not completely unexpected twist at the end. Too bad the final book in the series isn't yet available in the US.

The many meanings of the word Aloha By Grady Harp Alinka Rutkowska writes the "Maya & Filippo" Book Series for Children - travel books for kids with a positive attitude. She takes inspiration from her own travels while cruising with her husband and daughter around the world. She is positive, appreciative and happy 95% of the time and during the miserable 5% she thinks to herself quickly: "things always work out for me" and they do. As with her previous books she engages the assistance of Konrad Checinski as her skillful illustrator. As her previous readers will know Maya and Filippo are siblings AND best friends and this time their world adventures take them to Oahu, Hawaii. They learn that the word `Aloha' means hello when they see people. Maya and Filippo visit the beach, do the hula dance and learn to play the ukelele. A friendly islander explains that the word `aloha' has many meanings - `aloha' is a way of life and is consistent with the `Spirit of Aloha.' When people are happy in their home, it is a sense of feeling Aloha. When you are happy in your life, then you are true to Aloha. The spirit of Aloha is evident in the happiness of people who are enjoying themselves - and life!.In addition to the delightful book there is a quiz so that children can re-live the adventure from memory (or from referencing their book) their own version of Maya and Filippo show Aloha. A fun combination of listening and acting out! Grady Harp, March 15

In 2001, Quentin Blake - the first Children's Laureate - chose twenty-six of his favorite paintings for an exhibition at the National Gallery. Very different artworks were chosen, some by fine artists and some by children's illustrators, but they all had one thing in common: a story to tell. The accompanying book urges children to use their imaginations and look for the stories in the pictures. Reissued with a new introduction from the author, Tell Me A Picture will show a new generation the adventures that await in looking at art.

From School Library Journal Kindergarten-Grade 6-Believing that enjoyment of the art in picture books can be a prelude to pleasure in a museum, Blake designed an exhibit (with the same title as this book) at the National Gallery in London. The images in the show and on these pages come from European children's books and Great Britain's galleries and were chosen for their story potential. Blake's signature caricatures cavort and converse before and after each of the 26 pictures, modeling responses that invite imitation. His arrangement is alphabetical by artist, from Hendrick Avercamp to Lisbeth Zwerger. ("X," however, is an X ray of an underpainting, sure to fascinate since it is different from the surface.) Four pages are devoted to each entry. Initially, sketches of children, outlined in black and dabbed with gray/blue patches of color, carry signs that announce the artist's name. The spread that follows includes a blank, white page and then the featured art-a presentation that minimizes distraction. The fourth page provides the young visitors' emotional responses to the work. ("Nobody would buy that." "What do you think that music sounded like?") Most entries will be unfamiliar to American audiences, and some details are difficult to discern. As with any stroll through a museum, what strikes one's fancy is completely idiosyncratic. Blake's approach is an engaging path to art appreciation, with plenty of child appeal. The book concludes with illustrated and annotated attributions for each work and a list of locations/credits. A welcome addition to the realm of visual literacy for families and educators.Wendy Lukehart, Washington DC Public LibraryCopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review Children's Book Of The Week "Reissued for a new generation, this classic has lost none of its power." The Times "The children's art criticism is engagingly artless but encourages curiosity." The Observer "A truly awesome collection of art from some of our favourite artists, wrapped up in a book that just begs to be explored." Read It Daddy "Excellent." Red Reading Hub An absolute must for children (and grown ups) everywhere. Angels & Urchins "As the first Children's Laureate, Quentin Blake created an original exhibition in the National Gallery, London, for which he chose 26 of his favourite pictures. Some were illustrations from children's books, others were pictures by artists such as Edward Hopper and Paula Rego. All were wonderful pictures that tell a story. Through Quentin Blake's choices and his gentle notes about the pictures, all young readers have the opportunity to enjoy all kinds of art and to bring their own meaning to it." -- Julia Eccleshare Love Reading "An unusual and stimulating approach to art." I love how each picture is given lots of space on a white page, uncluttered by commentary or cutesyness, as is found in so many other art books for kids. Then the cartoon commentary is given its own pages, after the children have already made their own interpretations of the art, and it's not condescending or preachy-teachy, but is just another interpretation. I'm a preschool teacher, and in every class I've shared this with, it has prompted excited gasps and putting noses close to the page and lots and lots of conversation. Great for sharing with small groups of children, so everyone can get a good look.

I turn to books as a gift that is thoughtful and will always be the right size. Tell Me a Picture is always my first choice. The book challenges not only a child of any age, but parents and grandparents as well. It's like walking through a museum. Each picture allows you to consider it through whatever lens of experience you may have. I'm often told how surprised my friends are by what their children see in these pictures that we might overlook as adults. I've found this gift especially profound for friends who are artists, aficionados and admirers.

An alphabet book of paintings, drawings, and illustrations, and you get to make up a story as you look at them with your children. And Quentin Blake's illustrated gang of kids makes comments, too.Very interesting art selections. Some nudity, so your 11-year-old will be interested. The end notes give titles and descriptions of the selected artworks. Just a great book to have in the house, and inspiration to use other books in a similar way.

Solicitor General's Style Guide Is a Great Resource for Lawyers By Brendan Kenny The Solicitor General, who represents the United States in the nation’s highest court, is the only official of the U.S. government required by federal law to be “learned in the law.”So those of us who care about legal writing naturally took notice when the second edition of The Solicitor General’s Style Guide: Second Edition dropped on October 3, 2015 and became Amazon’s #1 new release in legal writing. In addition to taking a stand in favor of case law as opposed to caselaw, the guide makes some important recommendations in favor of active voice, plain language, and better typography. It should not come as a surprise that something in the guide was controversial. And it was only a matter of time before people who care about legal writing would find an excuse to bicker over something in the guide on Twitter. The powder keg was the guide’s preference for case law over caselaw. In support, it cited a memorandum from President Reagan’s Solicitor General Charles Fried calling for “total extirpation” of this “barbarism”. (pg. 87.)Transitive verbs express something you can do (like kick, push, or clean) to a direct object (like a table, stroller, or a toilet). Using transitive verbs means using the active voice, and using the active voice almost always makes for better writing. The guide takes a step toward encouraging the active voice by telling writers to stop using cite as a noun. (pg. iv.)Hereinafter looks like one of those words that falls within the category of legalese. And a growing number of legal writers share Justice Stephen Breyer’s opinion on legalese: “I’m against it … Terrible! Terrible!”But Rule 4.2 of the Bluebook instructs lawyers to use hereinafter to signal a short citation. The Guide calls out the Bluebook position and rejects it:We depart from the Bluebook in that the word “hereinafter” is not used to introduce a short form for an authority that would be cumbersome to cite repeatedly. Instead a short name will be introduced in the parentheses (without quotation marks) immediately following the source, and the shortened form shall be in the same typeface as the source.Matthew Butterick describes Courier New as”spindly, lumpy, and just plain ugly.” It’s hard to disagree. But some courts still require that lawyers write briefs in Courier. The new edition of the guide represents another step toward removing Courier fonts from polite society. The Guide’s predecessor from 2007 “was typeset entirely in Courier, using underlining, boldface, and sometimes all-caps for emphasis.” (pg. vi.) Even the 2014 update to the first edition of The Solicitor General’s Guide continued to use Courier for the examples of its rules. To the great relief of many legal writers, the guide is now set entirely in Century Expanded. Not surprisingly, the United States Supreme Court requires that the typeface used in all submissions “must be in a Century family.”As much as legal-writing nerds may bemoan it, many lawyers still use two spaces after a period. The guide comes up with a compromise I’ve never heard of before. (pg. vii.)The second edition of the Guide also employs, for the first time, an “em space” (i.e., a special space that is the width of a capital “M”) between sentences and after a colon. This represents a middle-course in the number-of-spaces after-a-sentence-war. Am em space is just one space, but it is significantly wider than an ordinary space. And you might be surprised by the em space’s origins. (pg. vii.)After painstaking research, the editor settled on the em space after concluding that the United States Reports uses the em space in this manner, and appears to have done so for a long long time.To my great surprise and delight, the guide delved into the weeds of word-space geekery by recommending that writers use a “hair space” after a lowercase f and j, when those letters are followed by an apostrophe, quotation mark, parenthesis, or bracket.” (pg. vi.)

What do you capitalize? What goes in italics? How do you format the caption on the cover? When the formal rules run out, partners always ask: "Well, how does the Solicitor General do it?" After all, the Solicitor General is the most prolific advocate before the Court. Mimicking him is never wrong. Before Metzler's publication of the Solicitor General's Style Guide, associates would just have to look at example briefs and figure out the rule from the example. After Metzler's edited guide, you can get the rule right from the source. A must-have for anyone who briefs (or may brief) cases in the Supreme Court.
