Meet the world’s largest living fish: the whale shark. With a back like a mountain range and a body that creates an enormous, looming shadow in the ocean below him, the whale shark is an exceptionally gentle giant—and yet it is relatively unknown. This informational picture book introduces readers to these stunning creatures in spare, poetic text. It’s a lyrical meditation that gives a sense of the whale shark’s slow, grand journey through the Earth’s oceans while creating an opportunity for inquiry and awe. Deep blue sketch illustrations play with perspective and seem to move with the natural energy of wind and water. The book ends with a factual page about whale sharks, which can be found in all tropical seas, and have been spotted off the coast of several countries around the world, including South Africa, Australia, India, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Mexico. Readers will come away with a well-formed sense of wonder and respect as they leave the whale shark to continue his leisurely journey.

Wandering Whale SharksFrom Shingu, Susumu (ILT)

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—Instead of glistening rows of terrible teeth, frothy waves, and the gruesome Jaws-inspired action scenes readers have come to expect from shark books, here Shingu offers children a mellow meditation set in the deep blue depths—wholly appropriate for a profile of this gentle giant. Employing spare text infused with rich vocabulary and poetic imagery, Shingu introduces readers to the largest living fish on Earth, the majestic whale shark. Swimming only 2.5 miles per hour and feeding on plankton and shellfish, the whale shark provides safety and shelter for many smaller fish. Using shades of aquamarine, cerulean, and black, Shingu varies perspective, showing the creature from underneath ("His abdomen is like a white balloon."), from the vantage point of his wide back ("like a mountain range"), and rising toward the surface to swallow enormous gulps of water in his "extraordinarily huge mouth." Never scary, the dark palette and contemplative prose at once evoke both a sense of coziness (the animal is "a comfortable home for suckerfish") and reflect the expansiveness of the deep ocean. For librarians looking to introduce informational picture books in storytime, the brevity and strong artwork make this title ideal. Early elementary students working on ocean units may also find this useful as an inspirational jumping-off point for further research. VERDICT A poetic and visually stunning introduction to one of the ocean's largest and gentlest creatures.—Kiera Parrott, School Library Journal

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A lot of information in a dozen poetic sentences By Janet Hamilton Summary: What is the largest fish in the sea? The whale shark, measuring up to 60 feet long and weighing in at over 40 tons. In contrast to its great white cousin, this shark is a gentle giant, gliding slowly through the sea and allowing divers to hold onto their fins and swimming with them for miles. Susumu Shingu poetically describes these animals in just a dozen sentences, all illustrated in the blue and black colors of the ocean. An end note gives more information.Pros: There’s quite a bit of information in this brief book. There are a few sentences you could use to teach similes and metaphors. The illustrations strikingly capture the way the light reflects off the ocean.Cons: Kids who usually like shark books might find the whale shark a bit of a yawn. No blood was shed in the creation of these illustrations.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A short and sweet inductive medical mystery By Literature_Fiend "My Tummy Hurts" is a book for children that prompts medical examination and reasoning through a clever scene-by-scene investigation. The book starts out with a simple mystery: Chase's tummy hurts and we don't know why. Could he be carsick? If so, then why does it still hurt after he leaves the car? Clearly, there is something more complicated at work in his body.As each scene progresses, the reader starts to form informed opinions based on Chase's symptoms and the observations of his keen friend, Naya. Naya, as the amateur medical investigator who ardently wants to find out what is ailing Chase, pieces together the puzzle of his illness by systematically nullifying incorrect conclusions and ensuring that alternative explanations are kept open. Unlike the adults who draw quick (but wrong) assumptions about what ails Chase, Naya is the paradigm of a liberal-minded and inductive individual who follows evidence to its logical conclusion. The consequences turn out to be significant: she saves Chase from becoming truly ill!The end result is a clever medical-detective story that is well-complemented by colorful artwork and a plot that gives just enough information to the reader so that they will follow along and make their own assumptions. It is short, sweet, and is a fun introduction to self-examination and open-minded thinking: two characteristics that the world certainly needs more of.

By Chris Vibert I bought this for my little one to read with so that he can learn the process of what to do when something happens with him. It is not like a real doctors book with fancy wording and pictures, its meant for you to read with your kids to help them understand what to do when their tummy hurts or if they aren't feeling well. This is a great childs book to help them understand certain medical things.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Best so far! By Larry One of the best children book I have ever bought. I read to my niece and it just doesn't seems to improve the medical knowledge among kids but also helps them develop the characteristic of asking questions, getting behind the problem and solving it in due time so that as to stop a catastrophe from happening. I would recommend this to every parent as their child could learn while having fun!

Is this poetry? Math? A brainteaser? Yes! It’s all that and more. The poet J. Patrick Lewis has reimagined classic poems—such as Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” and Langston Hughes’s “April Rain Song”—and added a dash of math. Between the silly parodies and the wonderfully wacky art, kids will have so much fun figuring out the puzzles, they won’t guess they’re learning! Answers appear unobtrusively on each page, and engaging information about the original poets is included. Math games and concepts, poetry and poet biographies—it’s all so cleverly put together. This funny book is a treat for fans of words and numbers alike.

Edgar Allan Poe's Pie: Math Puzzlers in Classic Poems, by J. Patrick Lewis

From School Library Journal Gr 4-6-Famous poems are adapted into math problems involving boxer shorts, pizza, termites, and more. I think that I shall never solve/A poem that makes my brain evolve/Word problems are made by fools like me/But only Patrick Lewis can make poems like these. Silly, colorful art adds appeal.α(c) Copyright 2013. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

From Booklist Though it’s a bit of a gamble that mixing poetry with math will make either any less baffling, Lewis’ grab bag of classic poems rewritten to include numbers puzzlers has an undeniably fun spirit. The math ranges from simple (asking how many cuts it takes to make 10 pie pieces in a reworking of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven”) to muddied (in the spin on A. A. Milne’s “Us Two,” the line “eight plus two times two” can really go in either of two ways) to downright challenging (asking kids to calculate the tax on a train ticket, and then a tip on the ticket plus tax, in the poem inspired by Langston Hughes’ “April Rain Song”). Slack’s ebullient artwork matches the goofy tone of the poems, and the answers to each problem are printed upside-down on each spread. This book could come in handy for a variety of different classroom purposes, but confirmed “mathletes” are probably the best bet for an audience. Grades 3-5. --Ian Chipman

Review "Lewis cleverly combines math and language arts with this collection of humorous poetry parodies that present readers with math word problems to solve."--Kirkus

"Teachers and parents might challenge youngsters to try solving the math problems, then introduce them to the classic poems by reading them together."--School Library Journal

"Slack's bug-eyed caricatures are an exuberant complement to Lewis's delightfully offbeat union of poetry and math."--Publishers Weekly, starred review

It's math poetry inspired by poems you've probably recited or studied, by poets like Lewis Carroll, A. A. Milne, and Langston Hughes. You may, in the end, prefer the original poems to the math problems, but this is still worth reading!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not bad By M. Heiss Fun to solve; fun to read. Fun illustrations. And surprisingly good poetry that makes sense and contains math riddles. You can tell a lot of effort went into making this book a success.

Nightbird, by Alice Hoffman

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—A sweet, if somewhat uneven middle grade tale by beloved adult author Hoffman. Twig is the daughter of the best baker in the town of Sidwell, NY. But Twig has a secret—the town doesn't know that she has an older brother, James, hidden away because of his large black wings, a result of the curse on the men in their family. James's clandestine nighttime jaunts around Sidwell have led fractious locals to talk of hunting down "the monster" in their midst. When a new family moves into the cottage that belonged to the witch who cursed Twig's ancestor, events are set in motion that will change all of their lives forever. Hoffman juggles multiple themes: an environmental thread, with a focus on the rare owls in the woods around Twig's home; a broken family thread (Twig hasn't seen or heard from her father since she was a toddler); a friendship tale of outsiders finding each other; along with bits of romance, curses, and magic. A clever narrator, beautiful imagery, and the quirky cast of secondary characters who populate the oddball town are the bright spots in this mix of fantasy and mystery. Unfortunately, the climax ties every plot line together neatly, and the overly pat ending undercuts an otherwise sophisticated narrative. Still, the spunky protagonist, copious descriptions of mouth-watering baked goods, and terrific cover art guarantee this magical story will find an audience.—Elisabeth Gattullo Marrocolla, Darien Library, CT

21 of 22 people found the following review helpful. Marvelous and Magical! By MommaMia Nightbird is a marvelous, magical story about growing up and coming to terms with our uniqueness. All children want to fit in, it's only natural, and so does Twig, our heroine. Her name is Teresa, but everyone calls her Twig because she loves to climb trees and she's as inconsequential as a twig. Well, at least that's what Twig thinks. She wishes she could have long silky hair, beautiful clothes, and most of all, friends. But Twig can't have friends. She lives an isolated life because she must. Her family has a secret and she can't risk bringing friends to the house, and really, she thinks, even if she could have friends over, who would want to play with her?In the town of Sidwell, anything is possible. There is magic in the air and something is hidden away from sight, something that would mystify, even horrify. The Sidwell Monster is the stuff of legend in town, but in reality, there is no monster. There never really is. Monsters are things we create in our minds to explain something that has no explanation. Twig knows this, but the towns people don't and she fears her family secret will be exposed and she'll be even more ostracized than she is already. When a new family comes to town and takes the cottage down the road from Twig and her mom, things start to happen. Twig is pulled along into situations she never thought possible and she finds herself with the one thing in the world she longs for. A friend. Julia Hall becomes her one confidant, her trusted companion, and eventually she and her sister Agate come to know Twig's family secret and become part of the solution to reversing the curse that has plagued Twigs family for generations. This story has a witch, (who may or may not be a witch) a monster (who may or may not be a real monster) and a young girl with a secret who is on the cusp of growing up and finds more strength in herself than she ever dreamed possible. This story is PERFECT for young readers from the age of 10 - 13. It's a charming story set in a delightful place where magic happens everyday. Alice Hoffman never disappoints and Nightbird is no exception. Brilliantly written, tightly woven tale of magic, friendship and the power of love.

A twelve-year old fantasy fan raves - it's great By Scott Schiefelbein This review comes to you with considerable input from my 12-year old daughter, Nina."Nightbird," by Alice Hoffman . . . oh well, I've already been told that my review is boring. Here is the perspective my daughter would like to share "because now people will read your review.""Nightbird" is an extremely good book. It is funny, sad, and thrilling. Alice Hoffman makes the book seem believable. Plus, I love flying things! Dragons, birds, griffons . . . "Nightbird" is a great book.A brief background of the plot is in order. Twig Fowler's family was cursed two hundred years agoby a witch named Agnes Early. So Twig leads a pretty lonely life. Her faither left for unknown reasons when Twig was little. The curse left her older brother, and all the other Fowler men, with wings! So, wehn Agnes Early's descendants move in next door, her mother isn't exactly friendly. But when she becomes friends with Julia, one of the Early girls, they must stop history from repeating itself."Nightbird" is a great book for people who love fantasy. There are also no annoying gaps in the story. I hate those. But if hyou are just looking for something fun to read, check out this book. There will be no regrets. It's a great book. Now, Dad, you can write what you want to write. Thanks, Nina.I can't top that - check it out. Dad.

By Brittany's Book Rambles A cute and magical story that lovers of Anne of the Green Gables will enjoy. Although I said that this is a magical story, there isn't a lot of physical magic. The magic is more of a feeling. I had two major problems with this book. One being the very foundation of the plot. The main problem in the story is that Twig's family has to keep her brother hidden from the world because of his curse as well as keep to themselves. It seems to me that all of the characters in the book are very loving and understanding and it seems like Twig's family actions didn't were an overreaction. The ending itself seems to affirm this as well. My second problem is that there is very little dialogue in the book. The reader is mostly told everything you need to know about the other characters, the relationships, and the actions. I liked it but I think it's not for my age group. I would have probably really loved in this book if I read it in elementary school.Full Review: http://brittanysbookrambles.blogspot.com/2015/03/nightbird-by-alice-hoffman-arc-review.html

By Nayu I received a copy of this in exchange for a fair and honest review.I still squee with delight now that Princess Evie has chapter books, not just picture books for her wonerful tales. She has so much fun helping others and doing the right thing. I'm in love with Sparkles the cat who makes a purrfect companion (I couldn't resist the pun!) and makes Princess Evie a girl I'd admire. Okay, I adore the cute illustrations which seem to sparkle off the page, the style of Princess Evie d& the others who are pretty and wear sweet, modest clothes and aren't stick-thin. Plus, come on, horses turning into unicorns are pretty awesome! I liked how the details of the foal's birth was side-stepped, so no gory parts. The poster at the end is rather cool too!

Macdonald I thought that moving to Windows 10 would be a leap, but with the aid of an excellent Dummies book I was in good shape. On the other hand, Going to Office 2016 from my "pre-ribbon" Office was like climbing Everest. I guess I had fought the no-ribbon battle for so long I had refused to look at the advantages off the "new" (for me) format. It took this book, and the world having moved on, to help me tonot only accept the ribbon, but see it' advantages. I recommend this book to fellow hold-out (if any survive) as a fine way to gradually undertand the tructure and application of Office 2016.

I learned a lot as I had recently purchased a new computer and was going from Windows XP with an old version of Office. Still I had questions for which I couldn't find answers in this book. I would still recommend it though.
