Sadie is on her way to deliver an elephant to her Great-Aunt Josephine, who lives completely alone and can really use the company.

She tries everything from mailing the elephant to boarding a plane, a train, and an alligator to get to her aunt's home. Along the way she meets an array of interesting characters, including an odd postal worker and a gang of bandit monkeys, who all help her get where she is going.

This eccentric and hilarious story from Philip C. Stead, the author of the Caldecott-winning A Sick Day for Amos McGee and illustrator Matthew Cordell will surprise and entertain from beginning to end.

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—How exactly does one deliver an elephant to a dear aunt "who lives almost completely alone and could really use the company"? Spunky young Sadie plans to send the pachyderm through the mail, but the wheelbarrow full of stamps required for the transaction makes her realize she needs another game plan. Undaunted, Sadie and the elephant travel by biplane, train, alligator and ice-cream truck to get to Great-Aunt Josephine, who as it turns out, doesn't really live almost completely alone thanks to Sadie. Watercolor and ink illustrations have a scratchy cartoonish quality reminiscent of James Stevenson that infuses the story with energy. From the "uh, oh" speech bubble hovering over the sputtering plane as Sadie realizes she's running out of gas to a train full of monkey bandits chowing down on bananas and canned beans, these two-page spreads are a comic delight, resulting in an engaging blend of perfectly paced adventure and visual humor. Add in a liberal use of exaggerated sound effects, and the outcome is a read-aloud winner sure to deliver laughs to young readers.—Teri Markson, Los Angeles Public Library

Josephine, who lives almost completely alone, could really use the company. But mailing an elephant from the post office requires a lot of stamps, so Sadie must find another way. Thus begins an adventure including an airplane, an alligator guide, monkey bandits, and more. Readers are sure to fall for the precocious Sadie and her patient elephant companion while trying to guess what might happen next. Highly recommended!

Creative, imaginative picture book for animal lovers and travelers By Cecelia Larsen The days of sending physical letters in the mail are almost done (if not gone already), but I still wax nostalgic for “real mail.” It might have something to do with all of those international pen pals I kept in touch with as a preteen, and definitely has something to do with The Jolly Postman, still one of my favorite picture books ever. When I saw a picture book with a postage stamp cover, I had to take a look. I could keep Philip C. Stead’s Special Delivery on my coffee table forever, if only for Matthew Cordell’s fantastic illustrations.Sadie is determined to send her Great-Aunt Josephine an elephant, to alleviate her loneliness (of course! what a thoughtful grand-niece…). She first tries to send the elephant by post, but the amount of stamps needed more than fill a wheelbarrow – that won’t work! Sadie soon takes matters into her own (creative) hands, and she and the elephant travel far and wide by plane, train and ice cream truck, meeting many interesting creatures and characters along the way.In Special Delivery, Stead has created an outlandish adventure that will appeal to animal lovers and travelers alike. The narrative is a bit disjointed in parts, as Sadie and her elephant jump from one unlikely scenario to another. Some transitions and conversations are left to the imagination. That said, Stead’s story tickles the imagination, and will likely prompt the telling of other tall tales among its readers. It’s inspirational like that. The real star of this book? Matthew Cordell’s illustrations. They have a deliciously old-fashioned feel, in a style that reminded me of Bill Peet. Sadie is the main (human) character, but I found myself looking at the animals on each page first – their expressions as they have these unusual adventures are hilarious and spot-on. Other fun details in the art: Words made out of train smoke, stamps upon stamps, and the unexpected reunion scene at the end, when the reader finally learns the “real” story.Special Delivery does what the best picture books do so well: it inspires imagination and creativity, while telling a silly story that will spark questions and laughter. It may not have been my exact cup of tea, but it’s sure to become the favorite book of many children this year.Recommended for: young readers, and parents/teachers/interested adults looking for books that will speak to an adventurous spirit.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Delivering Humor & Whimsy By L. M. Keefer Sadie wants to deliver a surprise to her Great Aunt Josephine who lives alone and could really use the company. Will it go special delivery? Are there enough stamps to mail an elephant? How would you send an elephant to your Great Aunt? Will the elephant go by train, by airplane, with the help of a gum-chewing alligator? Once the elephant arrives at Great Aunt's house, the reader may be surprised. And so will that bubble gum chewing alligator. This book delivers a quirky tale and some fun illustrations. Young readers may be scratching their heads by the end of the book, but it should appeal to their humor. If you read it to a class, you can discuss what present you think your grandmother would like, if not an elephant, and draw a picture of it.

The Dinosaurs Are Having a Party! (Andersen Press Picture Books) (Andersen Press Picture Books (Hardcover)), by Gareth P. Jones

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—Jones's signature wit shines in this picture book that features an eager and unsuspecting young lad invited to the dinosaurs' dinner party. The "Special Guest" arrives wide-eyed and bow-tied with a gift and his canine companion, whose immediately wary expressions clue readers in to the trouble afoot. Amid party games, a bouncy castle, and an overflowing buffet table, the guest of honor naively wades through the gathering, even past Chef Alfonsaurus preparing the grill outside, with nary a clue of the fate about to befall him. When T. rex lets out a terrible roar that finally scares the boy off, the boy grabs a party bag on his way out, which turns out to be something else altogether, setting the stage for the tantalizing ending that raises the question "What next?" The rhyming text falters at times, but this does not detract from the fun. The playful use of fonts and text placement add to the party atmosphere. Details in the full-color, cartoon-style illustrations provide visual hints that establish the dinosaurs' intentions and add to the age-appropriate humor of this story.—Lynn Van Auken, Oak Bluffs School, Oak Bluffs, MA

The pictures are great. There are the right amount of text per page so baby doesn't get fussy. There are jokes for both children and parents. A wonderful read that I share with all my fellow mommy friends.

He is very pleased to be able to go, but he doesn't see a very important part of the invitation (which I won't give away). He plays their games and has a snack, but then realizes there is a really good reason for him to go home...pronto.ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations are very colorful and full of detail and fun.THE GOOD: This is a fun story for elementary children who love dinosaur stories. There are plenty of dino pictures throughout. The book also has a lot of humor although you may have to look closely for it sometimes.THE NOT AS GOOD: I would have liked this book so much more if the author had chosen not to try to rhyme. The rhyming is often forced. This book would have flowed better without it. The ending gets a little scary with a T-rex chase making it less appropriate for the smallest crowd.AGE RECOMMENDATION: AGES 4-8

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It's okay. By Obi Wan ░░░░░IT'S OKAY░░░░░I liked this book for my 4 year old. I didn't love it.I actually enjoyed the rhyming scheme. I know others have pointed out that feels forced at times, but I thought the rhyming was well done. What this book lacks is a captivating story. A kid goes to a dinosaur party, then spends his night playing games and trying not to get eaten. Then he leaves and outruns the dinosaurs. My 4 year old liked it once through but that was enough for her. It didn't earn a spot in the nightly bedtime story rotation.

They were able to relate to the characters and the way the monkey's problems were solved.....Mommy's hugs, eating the bananas, breathing, etc. We all were very happy when Monkey got his smile back! The illustrations are also very cute! Kudos to Dr. Margolese for making this book's subject matter "real" for children!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A beautifully written, sweet story that is a great way ... By LuluMommy A beautifully written, sweet story that is a great way to talk to your child about their emotions and put words on feelings that they may think they alone are having. My son thoroughly enjoyed the book and, as a parent, I was able to use the content to have a better vocabulary to talk to my son about different issues. Thoroughly enjoyed it and I highly recommend it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Simply wonderful! By Andreann Perron What a wonderful book! I bought this one, as well as the Owl and the Tiger ones. My 3 year old boy really loved it. The pictures and the story were really captivating . It's a very well-written book that lets you adjust your reading to the level of language of your child. And because of this, this book will stay in our bookshelf for several years. The "tools" section at the end is also very useful, for children but also for parents. Furthermore, the story actually triggered sadness in him and because of the book, I was able to use the examples to help him label, understand and also regulate his feelings. By the end of the book, he was feeling already so much better by going through, with Monkey, his journey to find his smile. The beautiful and intense joyous reaction he showed when we came to the point where Monkey finally found his smile back was worth the moon. I would advice every parent to get this book.

Two More Fine Stories By Randy Johnson Two more delightful tales for the little ones.Beautiful princesses, Kings, handsome young men, magic, talking animals, all lavishly illustrated with photgraphs of animals and the people involved.Had a fine time with these.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. `Thanks to the three magical objects, the three brothers were able to save the princess.' By Grady Harp In 1983, François Bissonnette, created the early versions of the Zirons. But it was not until 1998, a few years after the birth of his two daughters, that the author published his first book of Zirons. And lucky for all that he has embraced a new direction. These little stories involve imagination, realism, surrealism, and magic and are bound to be favorites of children throughout the world. But now François visits that time-honored land of fairy tales in this Book 7 of his Stories for Children. In this book the fantasies are accompanied by richly colored photographs of models in costumes to match the story - a new and welcome addition to the quality of the book.In the first story PRINCESS SHAZANA we find the king and his son Charles in a kingdom without a queen. The king knows of the beautiful Princess Shazana and sends Charles to fetch her to woo her. On the way Charles encounter three episodes where he helps creatures in distress. When Charles finally arrives at Princess Shazana's castle he is swept away by her beauty. But the princess is sad because a treasured ring form her mother fell into the river and she refuses to marry until she gets it back. Since on of the creatures Charles befriended was a carp, that car returns the favor and finds the ring at the bottom of the water and gives it to Charles. The princess is thrilled but requests another favor - the gift of a golden egg that assures a happy future. Charles returns to the other creature he befriended - an eagle - and the eagle flies away and returns with a golden egg. Still not satisfied the princess will not marry the king until she has some magic water form a dark cave. Once again Charles returns to the creatures he befriended - an owl who is wise and promised to obtain the magic water from the dragon guarded cave. The princess is pleased but she has decided that Charles has answered her every wish and she wishes to marry Charles - they are both in love! They go to the King, but the king becomes ill and cast Princess Shazana out. The princess knows that the Ring makes anyone who only wants to marry her for her wealth and beauty become ill - and Shazana crows Charles and they live happily ever after. The other story THE THREE BROTHERS AN THE PRINCESS is another love story - this time a king has three sons Leopold, Philip and James. Leopold is in love with Princess Amelia and coaxes his brothers to assist him in his courtship. Each obtains an item with magic and together they gain the hand of Amelia for Leopold.Beautiful models and excellent photographs update these old fairytales and makes them irresistible. Silk, Author/Reviewer These two fairy tales are charming and delightful fairy tale from author Francois Bissonnette. "PRINCESS SHAZANA" is a beautiful young woman who a king from another kingdom wishes her to become his bride. The king calls upon a nobleman, Charles, to help persuade her to marry him. He mounts his horse, and travels till he comes to a stream. He sees a golden carp fish floundering on the bank. He puts the fish back into the water. The fish thanks him for saving her life. Then he sees a golden eagle on the ground with an arrow in his wing. The eagle is saved by Charles and thanks him. Then in the woods he saves an owl. He meets finally with the princess and explains his mission, but she can't marry anyone until the ring her mother gave her is found. Earlier the ring had fallen into the river. He'll have to have some help finding it! This a a beautiful, engaging story of doing a good deed and a good deed being returned. (This tale is based on "La Belle aux Cheveux d'Or" by Mme d'Aulnoy) "THE THREE BROTHERS AND THE PRINCESS." There is a king with three sons: Leopold, Philip, and James. Leopold is in love with Princess Amelia. Leopold asks the assistanc of his brothers to find a rare, beautiful gift he can present to the King, the princess's father. He hopes the Kind will grant permission to marry his daughter. But will the treasures satisfy the King? A beautiful story, which I enjoyed, and children will also. These are well-written young children stories with great photos and artwork. High recommend.

In the New World: A Family in Two Centuries, by Christa Holtei

From School Library Journal Gr 3–5—This fascinating picture book blend of fiction and nonfiction uses the story of the Peterses, a made-up German immigrant family and their fifth-generation American descendants, to explore immigration in the 19th century. Through well-crafted text and charming, detailed drawings, Holtei and Raidt convey the severe economic conditions that precipitated the Peterses' journey in 1869. Charming panoramas of the Peterses' home and village and close-ups of their careful planning prepare readers for the trip's progression, including what items the family carried with them in the one trunk allowed aboard the Teutonia. Onward from their passage in steerage, the Peterses disembarked in New Orleans and transferred to the steamship Princess on their way to Nebraska. There they made their final connection to their new home via covered wagon. Well-written paragraphs expand on topics such as "Life in Steerage" and "Seeing the New World." The narrative then highlights the fifth-generation of Peterses, who traveled back to their ancestral home in Germany to uncover their history. This tale emphasizes the triumph born of hard work and industry, themes that reflect the experiences of many immigrants to America, and humanizes this period. VERDICT A thoroughly delightful and informative story that may even inspire some readers to discover the joys of genealogy for themselves.—Nancy Call, Santa Cruz Public Libraries, Aptos, CA

Review This import offers a straightforward account of the reasons why a German family immigrates to America and how they fare initially, along with a brief look at the lives of their descendants.Raidt's conversational text begins with a brisk summary of the economic situation in Germany in the 1850s. This explains why the Peterses choose to leave behind family, farm and friends in 1869 in search of a new life in the United States. Blocks of text are accompanied by Holtei's delicately lined and colored illustrations; they are not etchings, but they recall Arthur Geisert in perspective and detail. These vignettes and double-page spreads add detail and assist in imparting information while also bringing characters and setting to life. Together, words and pictures outline the family's journey in the steerage section, their trip overland to Nebraska and their subsequent prosperity. Skipping several generations, their contemporary descendants are introduced in the final fourth of the book. Motivated by a school project, they reverse the trip and return to Germany to seek out the house from which their ancestors emigrated. Children are part of both families, and the present-day Peterses are a multiethnic family, both elements adding interest and appeal. While social studies teachers and/or those of German heritage seem likely to be the most enthusiastic audience, the narrative style, informal tone and attractive artwork broaden it significantly.-Kirkus ReviewsThis portrait of two generations of a family, separated by 150 years, provides a forthright account of the 19th-century German immigrant experience. Subheads break the text into brief blocks as Raidt (Nanuk Flies Home) details the particulars of the Peters family's 1869 move from their small German farm to the United States, explaining the financial necessity for their relocation, the hardships of the move, and the strains and rewards of their two-month journey to Nebraska. Holtei's (The Six Swans) crisp picture, a mix of spot illustrations and dramatic wordless spreads, showcase a diversity of landscapes, from a bustling Hamburg port to the equally busy streets of post-Civil War New Orleans and the sweeping plains where the family builds its farm, thanks to the Homestead Act. A page turn brings readers to the present day, as the Peters's descendants travel to Germany to explore their roots. While this reverse journey doesn't get the same weight and attention as the first one, it draws a clear line between past and present that will likely leave children curious about their own family histories.-Publishers WeeklyThis fascinating picture book blend of fiction and nonfiction uses the story of the Peterses, a made-up German immigrant family and their fifth-generation American descendants, to explore immigration in the 19th century. This tale emphasizes the triumph born of hard work and industry, themes that reflect the experiences of many immigrants to America, and humanizes this period. VERDICT A thoroughly delightful and informative story that may even inspire some readers to discover the joys of genealogy for themselves.-School Library Journal*In 1869, Robert and Margarete Peters emigrate from Germany to America with their two children. Taking few possessions, they travel by train, steamship, riverboat, and wagon to reach their homestead on the Nebraska prairie. They build a sod house first, but later they replace it with a sturdy farmhouse that remains in the family for generations. Almost 150 years later, a school project leads their descendants to look into their history. Intrigued by their ancestors who started the farm, the two children and their parents travel to their ancestral home. First published in Germany, this picture book offers a highly accessible, long-range perspective on the immigrant experience. The translated text reads smoothly and includes enough specific information about the nineteenth-century Peters’ lives to make their story gripping, while the shorter section on the modern Peters may lead readers to wonder about branches on their own family trees. At least half of each broad, double-page spread is given over to Raidt’s lively illustrations—detailed pencil drawings with subdued color washes. Page layouts are nicely varied, with short sections of text nestled alongside small pictures. On the endpapers, decorative maps show each family’s journey. Attractive and informative, this is a fine addition to the immigration shelves.-Booklist, starred reviewIn this well-written informational book, readers go to the 19th century where Peter’s family decides to leave Germany for the United States. After a long and arduous journey, the family settles and turns their land into a prosperous farm that thrives and supports the family for many generations. The author provides a great deal of factual information to underscore both the difficulties and rewards of their necessary journey. The present-day family, now 150 years later, wants to discover more information about their family heritage and background. They travel to Germany to locate the family’s original village and piece together parts of the puzzle to appreciate their history. Through well-crafted language, organization, and beautiful detailed illustrations, this book will enhance social studies explorations about immigration and family history. - Literacy Daily of the International Literacy Association

By Bob Walch In these troubled times it is GOOD to remember that many of us or our families originally came to this country from somewhere else. his clever picture book explains why one family in the 1860s came to America from Germany and settled in the Midwest. Now, nearly 150 years later, some of the family members plan to revisit their roots in Europe. Let's not forget the "immigrant experience" because it is part of who we are as a nation. This wonderful book reminds us of our past in a nice, positive way!

Downes In the New World by Gerda Raidt tells the story of the Peters family, immigrants to the United States from a small village in Germany. The book describes the father’s decision to move, the family’s preparation to move, how they get to Nebraska, and how they live in America. At the end, the book skips 150 years to show Bob and Maggie’s descendants going back to Germany to see their family’s roots. The illustrations are very interesting and help the reader visualize the story of the Peters family. Each illustration tells a story about their adventure or shows how they lived and worked in both the new world and the old. You can’t help but feel like you were really there from seeing the pictures.Although it is advertised for K-3rd grade, I don’t think this is the right age bracket for this book. The print is small, and there is a lot of text; so I would recommend it for at least 3rd grade and older. Even as a read-aloud, I don’t think many younger kids would sit through it, at least not in one sitting. This is an excellent book to use during a unit on immigration, homesteading in America, or Germany. It is also a good resource for students to use in a history report.

Red, by Jan De Kinder

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—Originally from Belgium, this quiet yet powerful book addresses bullying. When a little girl notices her classmate blushing, her initial amusement turns to regret as a wink, a grin, and a laugh to the others make things much worse. Though Tommy repeatedly asks to be left alone, the children, especially Paul, continue to laugh and jeer at him. "Paul stares at me. 'Got something to say?' he gives Tommy a push. I shrug my shoulders and bite my lip. I don't say anything." The little girl shares her internal struggle to stand up for her friend versus her fear of the bully, whose "tongue is as sharp as a knife. And…fist is as hard as a brick." Yet, when the teacher questions the group, her fear is ultimately overpowered by her conscience. A wordless spread of angry, guilty, and ashamed faces all awash in red depicts the little girl in full color, bravely raising her hand. To her surprise, other hands follow—"Everyone saw what happened. We all talk at once. I can breathe again. I'm not all on my own." Though the bully confronts her later, the other children rally to her side. Using a palette of primarily red, black, and cream, the appealing cartoon illustrations are rendered in pencil, charcoal, ink, aquarelle, acrylic, and collage. VERDICT The tasteful, sensitive treatment of an important topic is sure to spark class discussion.—Barbara Auerbach, New York City Public Schools

Review USBBY 2015 Outstanding International BookNotable Books for a Global Society 2016CCBCChoices 2016Booklist (STARRED review) "From the proliferation of red throughout this book, we know visually it has strong emotional content, and the cover, with a dispirited boy being gawked at by others, adds to its impact. . . . While the text is sparse (and in red), as the teasing builds to a crescendo, the distinctive pencil, charcoal, ink, acrylic, and collage art dramatically shows events spin out of control. . . . [A] thoughtful, accessible story." Publishers Weekly "A useful opening into discussions about taking a stand when others do wrong." Kirkus Reviews "The beguiling artwork and pulsing heart at the story's center provide much food-for-thought — not to mention an opportunity for children to put themselves into the shoes of the bystander of a cruel act, which surely happens on playgrounds more than adults would care to admit. Thoughtful and beautifully illustrated, it's definitely one to look for." Children's Illustration (blog) "An elegant story about the bravery of everyday life on the playground." Jen Robinson's Book Page "Red will be validating for young readers in early elementary school.
