The Legend of the Yule Lads is well-known among Icelanders and has been passed down from generation to generation for over 1,500 years. The country's rich history of legends and folktales featuring a host of mystical creatures is reflected in this unique Christmas tale about trolls. However, like many of Iceland's legends, the story of the Yule Lads is virtually unknown outside of the country. This particular story can be traced back to 13th Century and the Snorri Sturlson's Edda. The Edda refers to the recognized mother of the Yule Lad's, a horrible ogress named Gryla. In that time, Gryla and her many troll offspring were said to terrorize children, hauling badly behaved children off in great burlap bags to be later eaten. The tales of Gryla and the Yule Lads became so gruesome and disturbing that in 1746 a public decree was issued to forbid parents from using these stories to terrify children. In the years since, the Yule Lads' character has been softened from horrible trolls to mischievous tricksters. As the legend goes, the Yule Lads come down from the mountain, one each day starting 13 days before Christmas. They stay through Christmas Day, then leave, one each day, in the order they arrived. In 1932, a popular poem was written about the Jólasveinarnir [Yule Lads] by Jóhannes from Kötlum and it first appeared in the book Jólin Koma [Christmas is coming]. As presented in Jóhannes poem, each of the Yule Lad's name reflects their particular brand of mischief. Stekkjastaur (Sheep Cote Clod) starts things off on December 12th and is best known for stealing sheep's milk. Giljagaur (Gulley-Gawk) arrives the next day and is preoccupied with sneaking into the barn to steal cow's milk. Stúfur (Shorty) steals bits of food left on frying pans while Thvörusleikir (Spoon-licker) steals spoons from the kitchen to lick and Pottasleikir (Pot-licker) steals pots and pans for the leftovers. Askasleikir (Bowl-licker) arrives next and sneak awa

By Crystal Lasky Robinson A great book for Christmas and for an introduction to Icelandic folklore! I especially like that the names of the Yule Lads are included at the end in Icelandic. For those with kids, it's a good story about learning the joys of gift giving. An added bonus is that the Yule Lads make choices and don't follow the usual fairy tale trope of ugly=bad. Some things to keep in mind about how this story is different from fairy tales you may be used to:1. It's not super short, and while the story is good for young kids, the length and lack of word repetition (think of Goldilocks and the Three Bears) means that it's not easy for little kids to read by themselves.2. This is a story about how the Yule Lads become givers instead of tricksters. It's a good story, but it doesn't have the high-stakes excitement of life or death that Grimms' fairy tales have. (This may be a good thing for some readers!)The book is enjoyable and clever, and makes an interesting change from the usual holiday fare.

The book talks about the 13 mischievous "lads" who play tricks on people during the Christmas season. This tale shows how they have added giving gifts to the children. It's not the whole story and doesn't include what they give to naughty children or what their mother does to naughty children but it is a cute self-contained Christmas story. Having visited Iceland, we heard the whole story which is why we purchased this book.

American dippers are small gray birds that live their whole lives near (and in!) fast-moving mountain streams. Charming and unique in their habits, dippers were John Muir’s favorite bird (he called them 'water ouzels'). This nonfiction book — brimming with full-color illustrations, detailed sketches, lively verse, and light humor — takes readers to a rendezvous with a winged creature they might easily see on a stream-side ramble throughout western North America. Readers will discover what these curious little birds eat, how they find their food, where they nest, what their chicks are like, where they go in winter, and much more. A section at the end provides a wealth of additional information making this book a fantastic resource for junior naturalists, educators, bird enthusiasts, visitors to national parks, and anyone interested in how field biologists perform their work.

The Singer in the Stream: A Story of American Dippers, by Mary Willson

From School Library Journal Gr 2–5—Previously published (with a different title page illustration) by Cinclus Press in 2008, this handsome book written in verse describes the American dipper, a fascinating bird that lives near streams. The large, realistic illustrations keep step with the chatty text and are accompanied by tiny sketches and facts. The text itself is a poem in praise of the dipper that covers its life cycle. Educators will appreciate the comprehensive back matter on the lives of dippers, the methods of the scientists who study them, and a short essay on naturalist John Muir, who considered the dipper his favorite bird. VERDICT Engaging as well as informative.—Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY

Kalliope lives with one purpose.

To inspire.

As an immortal muse, she doesn't have any other choice. It's part of how she was made. Musicians, artists, actors - they use her to advance their art, and she uses them to survive. She moves from one artist to the next, never staying long enough to get attached. But all she wants is a different life - a normal one. She's spent thousands of years living lie after lie, and now she's ready for something real.

Sweet, sexy, and steady, Wilder Bell feels more real than anything else in her long existence. And most importantly, he's not an artist. He doesn't want her for her ability. But she can't turn off the way she influences people, not even to save a man she might love. Because in small doses, she can help make something beautiful, but her ability has just as much capacity to destroy as it does to create. The longer she stays, the more obsessed Wilder will become. It's happened before, and it never turns out well for the mortal.

Her presence may inspire genius.

But it breeds madness, too.

Inspire is the first book in The Muse series and is intended for listeners 18+!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Absolutely fantastic By Misha Review originally posted at The Book Enthusiast: http://thebookenthusiast.net/inspire-by-cora-carmack.The second I heard Cora Carmack was writing a new adult paranormal book I literally squealed with delight. Considering how much I love her work and both of those genres, there was no way I wasn’t going to dive into INSPIRE when it was released. I have never read a story about a muse before, and I was definitely intrigued by the concept. Unsurprisingly, I fell completely in the love with the book and its characters. INSPIRE was unique, sexy, emotional, and absolutely fascinating.Kalli is an immortal muse who has spent thousands of years inspiring artist after artist. She can never stay with them for long, as there is a fine line between helping to influence artistic creativity and wreaking havoc on people’s lives. While the artists need her, she also needs them to survive. Kalli yearns for a normal life and all that comes with it, especially love. Then one day she meets the attractive and kind Wilder Bell, who turns her world upside down. From the very first chapter my heart was breaking for Kalli. She had an emptiness about her that made me ache. Having spent so long moving from artist to artist, she had never been able to become attached to anyone. Kalli must constantly reinvent herself so no one notices she never ages. I loved how seriously she took her job. She truly cared about her artists and worked hard to keep a balance that would not cause harm to them. It was an incredible responsibility. The second Kalli laid eyes on Wilder he captivated her. He was sexy, sweet and dedicated to taking care of his family. Even though he felt guilty about some of the decisions he had made in the past, I felt like he greatly underestimated the kind of man he was. He made sacrifices to be there for his family, and that spoke volumes about his character. I love how genuine he was with Kalli and the way he treated her with such tenderness and reverence.Kalli’s struggles in this book were so palpable. She understood how important her role as a muse was, but she couldn’t rid herself of the intense longing for something more. Kalli wanted Wilder, but how could she have him? Once she decided that she couldn’t resist him any longer, I was on edge of my seat watching her attempt to balance her relationship with him with her responsibilities as muse. If she didn’t keep a strong hold on her energy, the consequences could be fatal. The chemistry between Kalli and Wilder was intense, and their scenes together sizzled. I loved how they couldn’t seem to keep their hands off of each other. I felt for Wilder as he tried to understand why Kalli seemed so elusive and mysterious at times. She didn’t make it easy for him, but I adored his passion for her and his persistence. It was interesting how they each felt badly for wanting to be selfish when I felt like they were both deserving of that selfishness.Cormack did a fantastic job of writing about Greek mythology while putting her own spin on it. INSPIRE was full of twists and turns that kept me on my toes, constantly wanting to know more about Kalli’s world and to see if she could find a way to have a life with Wilder. Their relationship was the perfect balance of romance and sexiness. INSPIRE was original, enthralling, and exactly what I love about Carmack’s writing. I absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on the next book!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Interesting premise, just didn't develop. By betweenthecovers I've had bad luck lately trying to find new authors to read. This had so many 5 star reviews and was only a dollar for the kindle version so I gave it a shot. Eh....it was just okay. I think the author has talent, it was a very interesting premise, just didn't seem to fully developed in terms of the more minor characters and plot development. Immortal Greek gods are still alive and some of them live among us. Kalli is a muse. She develops and feeds on the artistic prowess of her lovers. She's never been in love in several millennium yet suddenly she falls almost instantly in love at first sight in a convenience store. The story was shallow and hard to immerse myself in.

6 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Be Inspired! By Stephanie So, if you've followed me for any length of time, you know it's very rare that I read/review paranormal books. But when one of your favorite authors announces that they are releasing a paranormal romance involving Greek Mythology, which I like, there's not much you can do except add it to the top of your reading list. And that's exactly what I did when Cora announced that she was releasing INSPIRE.INSPIRE is the story of Kalli, an immortal Greek muse who is destined to live a solitary life alone, inspiring the creative juices of those in the arts. Then she meets Wilder. She is drawn to him in a way that she's never been before. Now she must decide whether or not to risk being with him or letting him go.I really can't even begin to describe how much I loved this story, these characters and everything in between. INSPIRE took me on a roller coaster of emotions that left me reeling. Cora blended the new adult contemporary and paranormal genres perfectly. There isn't much more I can say without giving anything away. If you're a fan of Cora, new adult or paranormal romance, I would definitely urge you to pick up INSPIRE. You won't regret it!

Rain, Rain, Rain Forest, by Brenda Z. Guiberson

From School Library Journal Kindergarten-Grade 4–This eye-catching picture book transports readers to a tropical rain forest. Smoothly incorporating a great deal of information, the text follows creatures such as a sloth, capuchin monkeys, and a poison-dart frog as they move through their habitat. Guiberson conveys the relationships among different animals by describing their activities at various times of day. Small dramas such as a squabble over nest space reveal the continual change and movement in this environment. Effective use of onomatopoeia further enhances the narrative with forest sounds. Jenkins uses his signature collage style to bring this realm alive for viewers. Although his humans seem a bit stiff, they are minor figures in the overall portrayal of the lush, green world. Even collections with several volumes about rain forests will want this introduction.–Kathy Piehl, Minnesota State University, Mankato Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist *Starred Review* K-Gr. 3. "Splitter, splat, splash!" As a rainstorm "thrums" through the treetops, a tropical forest comes alive. Vibrant words and sensory impressions bring the creatures' noisy cacophony and slithering, swooping motions up close, while gracefully incorporated facts convey a surprising amount of information about basic survival. Each spread describes rain forest animals, from tiny scissor-jawed ants to white-tailed deer as they search for food, fend off enemies, and protect their young. Guiberson doesn't shy away from the realities of predators and death: an eagle carries off a cute capuchin monkey in her talons--dinner for her hungry chicks. But the author balances the heavier facts with lighter ones. The proportions of the animals in Jenkins' paper-cut collages may occasionally confuse children: on one spread, a mouse and sloth appear to be the same size. But the artist's colorful, textured images create a rich sense of atmosphere, and the precise details and lively compositions will easily draw children back to the text. Final spreads of a scientist, suspended in the forest canopy as she studies medicinal plants, reinforce how humans, too, are part of life in the wild forest. “* Vibrant words and sensory impressions bring the creatures' noisy cacophony and slithering, swooping motions up close, while gracefully incorporated facts convey a surprising amount of information about basic survival. ” ―Booklist, starred review

“The present-tense narrative offers action-packed and animal-crammed descriptions of the residents' doings, livened up by onomatopoeic exclamations that evoke the sounds of the teeming biosystem. The muted greens and gray-blues of the cut-and-torn-paper collages recall the damp, dim warmth of the downpour under the canopy, and the positioning of focal points in foreground and background space deepens each prospect and highlights luxurious textural details.” ―The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

“Both Guiberson's text and Jenkins' pictures are similarly packed with detail, capturing the relationships among plants, animals, and the environment that support and sustain life.” ―The Horn Book

“This eye-catching picture book transports readers to a tropical rain forest. . . .Effective use of onomatopoeia further enhances the narrative with forest sounds. Jenkins uses his signature collage style to bring this realm alive for viewers.” ―School Library Journal

“Guiberson's nicely paced test is packed with information. . . . Jenkins' colorful and informative collage illustrations are a perfect complement to the text.” ―Scripps-Howard syndication

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Long, educational, entertaining By Stephanie X. Dileonardo A little long as a read aloud, but definitely entertaining for a slightly older crowd (3rd grade?) and provided a lot of details not found in every other book on rainforests. It is primarily about the sloth, but many other animals are part of the story as well. There are a lot of specific facts dealing with numbers (lengths, populations, distances) that make this one better for an older child, and probably useful for book reports.
