From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—With gorgeous mixed-media illustrations and accessible, engaging language, this picture book will spur interest in the world of hippos. Trueman's vivid images take advantage of every inch of available space to convey the size of these creatures, and the "Isn't this cool?" tone of London's text keeps readers hooked. Two types of text appear on each page: larger print encompasses the main narrative full of fascinating facts (ideal for reading aloud), while smaller print presents drier statistics and additional facts of interest. With a focus on high-interest details—such as a spread featuring two bull hippos flinging dung at each other in warning—this title stands out. VERDICT A solid nonfiction read-aloud.—Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Carroll County Public Library, MD

I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas, But It Would Be Too Big By tvtv3 I'm kind of an amateur nature buff and ever since I first heard the song "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas", I've had a strange attraction to hippos. HIPPOS ARE HUGE! is an educational and informative children's book about hippos. The book tells where hippos live, what they eat, how the are born, and what they do under water. It's also filled with all kinds of interesting facts. For instance, I knew hippos' jaws were powerful, but I had no idea that a hippo can bite a crocodile in half with just one bite! I also didn't know that two male hippos who were about to fight would start to throw dung at each other! HIPPOS ARE HUGE! is filled with fun information like that. There are two sizes of texts on each page. The larger text follows the overall loose "narrative" while the smaller text offers educational tidbits about hippos. In addition, the illustrations are playful, but still reinforce the text. HIPPOS ARE HUGE! is a delightful and education children's book that not only will children enjoy reading, but one that they will learn from, too.

No, it’s that adorable hippopotamus innocently wallowing in the mud. Did you know a hippo can bite a crocodile in half, and run 25 miles per hour? This book is packed with fascinating information about how hippos eat, fight, move, and reproduce.Pros: Kids of all ages will enjoy this excellent nonfiction book. The brief, engaging text and large colorful illustrations make it appropriate to read aloud to preschoolers. (They’d especially enjoy the double-page picture of males swatting balls of dung at each other with their tails.) At the same time, there’s enough information here to write a pretty complete report. There’s even a brief index with a note on how to use it.Cons: The book starts off as a general introduction, then on page 12 introduces a specific hippo whom we follow through the rest of the book. I didn’t quite catch on to this until the end of the book, which made for a little confusion. I think the problem was with the hippo’s name which was...Hippo.
