I loved how it's not explicit in describing the inappropriate behavior but focuses more on how something makes a child feel, which I think is more to the point as these situations can be subtle at first. Great example of courage even when scared. The trusted grown-up buddy worksheet at the end is a great visual project to do with your kids.

It's so important to be able to talk about scary things without making your children afraid of the world. Reading Lauren's Kingdom all curled up safe, sound and cozy allowed us to answer questions in a safe & secure way and teach the important lesson that it is okay to tell. The drawings are so sweet and appealing. Well done!! Thank you to Lauren for sharing her story and making it easier to protect children everywhere.

By Jennifer I can echo the words of another reviewer that there is no disclosure or warning for parents about the subject matter of this book. My daughter also chose it off the shelf at the local library. We started reading it and I was SHOCKED when it went down the path of abuse after several pages. I had to stop reading and decide if I was going to continue. I brought the book back to the library and they agreed that the children's section was NOT an appropriate place for this book and removed it from their shelves. The subject matter is SO important to discuss but I felt blindsided by this book. This is NOT a book I want my 6 year old taking off the shelf and reading on her own. I am upset that there was no warning to parents or any indication of its subject matter somewhere on the cover.

From School Library Journal Baby/Toddler—These striking titles feature distinguished artwork, destined to appeal to curious young minds. On the Farm gives a familiar subject renewed life through Dogi's wonderfully expressive animal faces rendered in liquid acrylics with airbrushing. Calves and cows, chickens and chicks, foals and horses, and other adult-baby creature pairings are accompanied by one simple sentence per page and the onomatopoeic word for each. In Time to Build, simple sentences explain what a tape measure, saw, wrench, drill, screwdriver, and hammer do, while carefully detailed pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations depict a variety of people using the tools. On the final spread, readers see their results: a tree house. Solid selections.

Review "richly detailed illustrations are paired with short sentences that include a description of the noises that young farm animals make." - Through the Looking Glass Children's Book Reviews". destined to appeal to curious young minds." -School Library Journal". luxuriantly detailed ." - Publishers Weekly"A fine board-book addition to an already full field of farmyard books." - Kirkus Reviews"colorful but classically inclined illustrations ."- New York Times Sunday Book Review

When Cilla Swaney returns to her Southern roots from traveling the world as a military brat, she's eager to break free of her life-long role as the major's "good little daughter." She vows to, for once, explore her own interests...especially magick and Wicca. However, adjusting to life in the homeland she barely knows is keeping her from seeking out her inner goddess. First her church-going grandmother threatens to rat her out if she sets a Wiccan-wandering toe out of line. Then, at her new charter school, the first girl she meets steals her grimoire and casts a spell that sets their shared locker afire. Finally, when that same girl invites her to a coven, Cilla's sister argues she doesn't have the guts to attend. But it's the dark-haired hottie at school who really ignites Cilla's flame. When Emilio shows up at her coven, she starts believing in her ability to finally conjure her own magick.Until all Hades breaks loose with a prank gone wrong, and Emilio is possibly to blame. Will Cilla be able to keep the boy, her coven, and the trust of her family, or will this Southern Wiccan get battered and fried?

Review SOUTHERN FRIED WICCAN casts a spell that warms the heart. With characters to root for and a sincere teenage voice, it reminds us that there's more beneath the surface than a stereotype.  -- Lisa Gail Green, author of SOUL CROSSED. In SOUTHERN FRIED WICCAN, S.P. Sipal deftly spins a unique premise into a fun adventure made all the more enjoyable by her narrator's unique voice. -- Kaitlin Bevis, author of the Daughters of Zeus series 4 STARS! A well-written coming of age story focused on the idea of finding your true self and what you believe even when it isn't easy. I really enjoyed the book and hope to see more from S.P. Sipal. -- Jen Streck of Psychocat Reads Reviews SOUTHERN FRIED WICCAN is "definitely not a watered down, cookie-cutter witch story. Oh no. It's about a girl as normal as you and I finding her own voice and forging her own path in a somewhat taboo religion: Wicca... I loved it!" -- Randi from Bell, Book, and Candle Reviews

She was enjoying it so much she kept reading it aloud to me, which made me wish we had an audiobook of it. It was entertaining for both of us! My daughter could relate to Cilla, except for the living in the south thing. I appreciated the sharp writing and clever storyline. Good job!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Served With a Side of Monty By Priya J. Sridhar I don't often post five star reviews, or any text reviews, but this book deserved it. The first page hooked me, and I stayed up till midnight last night to finish it. A very good read, Susan! So we have a military brat assigned to a home front and hating every minute of it. Priscilla aka Cilla has seen much of the world but not much freedom; her grandmother is the queen of micromanagers, restricting Cilla as much as possible while running an organic farm and catering business. When Cilla starts researching Wicca as a means to channel her inner power, local Goth Val befriends her and invites her to a coven. Cilla has to sneak out so that her God-fearing grandmother won't ground her forever, under the guise of researching her role as a witch in a Macbeth adaptation. But some secrets can't be kept forever, especially in such a small town . ..On reading this book, I feel like Susan Sipal wrote it for me; she detailed exactly what it was like to be in a situation where you have no control, where you have to break from tradition to find your thoughts and place in the world. She almost demonstrates the novel as a democracy, giving each character a voice and a motivation. G-ma for example irked me because I know a G-ma in real life, but then she gets to sit down and tell her story, as well as showing genuine affection for Cilla. People have layers, and they aren't always the authority figures or antagonists. Honestly the mercy in this story towards certain characters shows hope that understanding can happen, especially in a region with a lot of prejudice. Also, there's a sweet snake named Monty, and I normally don't like snakes. There needs to be a Monty fandom, especially on Tumblr; no one should ever hurt him.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. not what I thought By Michael I ordered this book to give to a dear family friend who's husband has cancer. They have two adorable little girls under age 6 and she was very unsure about if she was going to tell her kids and if so, exactly what she would say. I read it like it was an explanation and reading it to your kids will help them understand. But read more like explaining or talking about the child getting cancer than an explanation for it. In any event I'm not positive how it went, or if it was used. I would suggest doing more research before buying to be sure its what you want.

Fantastic artbook and visual companion for the games By Parka [[VIDEOID:ae5f16a6ffae523337a8ab7208deac0a]]I'm a fan of the art and design of the Assassin's Creed game series. It has always drawn me in with the stunningly beautiful environment art, setting and historical context. The idea to allow someone, us as gamers, to go back in time to visit iconic places in history is genius, even if the environments are not totally accurate.Assassin's Creed: The Complete Visual History is a huge 320-page hardcover that covers the art and design aspect of the game. It includes all the main Assassin's Creed games up to Assassin's Creed Syndicate. Here's the list of contents:The Middle AgesThe RenaissanceThe American RevolutionThe Seven Years' War - Part 1The Golden Age of PiracyThe Seven Years' War - Part 2The French RevolutionThe Industrial RevolutionChroniclesThe World BeforeBeyond GamesI did not buy any of the Assassin's Creed Encyclopedia (currently in its third edition) so I can't tell if there are going to be any overlaps. But I've many of the Assassin's Creed artbooks, for the first, third, IV: Black Flag and Unity. There's definitely duplication of artworks used in this book, in fact quite a lot, which is perhaps not unexpected. There are also many pieces of new art as well, especially since it covers the Assassin's Creed Syndicate which by the way also has its own dedicated artbook. The artworks are awesome, even if you have seen them before. The book is huge and for many pieces of environment art that are printed full page, it feels immersive, as if you're standing there yourself. The background and environment art is what I like most about the game. Other artworks included would be the characters just to accompany the lengthy commentary that runs throughout the book. For fans who want to learn more about the art and design, there's plenty to read. About one third of the book is text. The insightful commentary talks about the historic context and how the characters, environments and stories are created around that. There's one chapter devoted to the First Civilisation and how it's the overarching element all the games. There's also one chapter on the side games, the Chronicle DLC series. It includes content for China, India, Russia. And lastly there's a chapter for the other merchandise and marketing materials, such as the cover art for the games, toys and other collectibles. Strangely, the other artbooks and the Encyclopedias are not mentioned. Novels are briefly mentioned in one line. I'm sure there are many more merchandise that are not included, such as the limited edition game releases and their goodies. I would love to see those.By the way, there appears to be two publishers for this book. Mine's from Insight Editions. The other publisher is Titan Books who has somehow listed the book has having 264 pages which I'm pretty sure is not correct. This is not the first time it has happened.Overall, this is a fantastic artbook and visual companion for the games.Highly recommended to all fans of the game and art.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great art and history (real and in-game). Surprisingly high print & binding quality. By Christopher David Nelson First off, this is a good quality book. Solid hardcover, thick glossy pages, binding looks like it could stand up to leaving the book wide open w/o splitting (though I haven't tested that). Should stand up to years of normal use without much wear and tear. They probably could have gotten away with much cheaper materials, but they didn't, and I appreciate that.Because of the quality of the prints, the artwork looks great. Lots of detailed full-page images. Also really enjoyed the depth & insight the text adds. Mr. Miller appears to have done his homework and then some. Of course, you'd expect he'd know the games well. I believe he's been writing about games professionally for over a decade now, and was the reviewer for many of the Assassin's Creed games. In any case it's great reading both the fictional history of the game series and the real world history they draw from in the same text.Need a TL;DR? I assume you like the games, otherwise I doubt you'd be here. In that case, you'll enjoy what this book has to offer, and I'm pretty sure you'll feel that the quality and content are worth what you pay for it.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An absolute treasure! By A Customer What an amazingly beautiful book! I only just received it and haven't even looked through the entire tomb, yet, but I am already incredibly happy I ordered it. The artwork is printed in excellent quality, with many pieces covering entire pages (which is quite large, considering the size of the book). Colors come to life. The informative text is written in an intelligent style, covering many interesting aspects of the Assassin's Creed timeline. The book is so engrossing, I didn't even do my regular routine of leafing through and reading later. I went straight to diving head-first into each page.Binding and paper are of high quality and feel nicely heavy in hand.A treasure for every Assassins fan!

Unfortunately, like many skilled practitioners turned instructor, Schultz doesn't always recognize what needs further illustration. The book is heavy on "to the right" and "around" and "above" without clear enough illustrations to back up the directional instructions. For readers whose minds work like the author's this is likely to be a useful guide. Others, particularly visual learners, may find themselves confused.About me: 25+ years machine and hand sewing experience looking for a guide to help a less experienced sewer.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Starter Book!! By Rajon Alex My mother recommended this to me as I had been talking about teaching myself to sew for some time now. This was an ideal introduction for me I think- the illustrations and steps were very clear and easy to follow, and a great selection of projects to choose from. I think its a very new idea for me.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great reference guide! By Michael S. Hand sewing seems to be almost a lost art these days. Luckily, my wife still likes to sew. I saw this book and wanted to get it for her. It is a great reference guide that can be referred to easily. One of the things that I like most about the book is how the author outlines how to make repairs to clothes, and how to hem pants and skirts. Making repairs to your clothes when there is a tear or something can make them last a lot longer. This book is easy to understand, even for beginners, and the illustrations are very well done. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to learn how to sew.

This is the first longer-format, middle-grade collection from #1 New York Times–bestselling author-illustrator Calef Brown. Moving away from the picture book format offers Calef the opportunity to tackle a variety of themes and poetry styles as well as reach a slightly older audience. Hypnotize a Tiger is chock-full of Calef's zany black-and-white artwork and features his wonderfully inventive characters and worlds―from the "completely nonviolent and silent" Lou Gnome to Percival, the impetuous (and none-too-sensible) lad who believes he is invincible, to Hugh Jarm (who has a huge arm, natch!). It's a whimsical world: creative, fun, and inspiring!

Hypnotize a Tiger: Poems About Just About Everything, by Calef Brown

From School Library Journal Gr 2–5—This collection delivers a smorgasbord of Brown's trademark nonsensical poems. Broken into sections by theme such as "The Critterverse," "Schoolishness," and "Word Crashes," the selections depict an offbeat world where dinosaurs barbecue "titanic taters" and ghoulish gym teachers make kids play "dodgebull… with actual cattle." The poems bounce and jump from one topic to the next with sometimes satirical, always silly, word play running along the page bottoms. Brown's stylized, folk artsy illustrations evoke just the right mood for the zany verse. Though there is more than one line that does not roll easily off the tongue and awkward rhymes abound, it is easy to see this clumsiness as part of the spirit of the collection. From the poems themselves to the illustrations to the tongue-in-cheek interview with Brown at the book's close, it's clear that this is a collection that doesn't take itself too seriously. For libraries seeking something silly, especially where Brown's poems are already a hit.—Jill Heritage Maza, Montclair Kimberley Academy, Montclair, NJ

    Review

Winner of the Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Honor Award

“Full of absurdity and off-kilter musings, Brown's collection offers a zingy introduction to the silly side of poetry.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Backyard Byzantines, Hipster Hirsutes, Arcane Arcadians, Rare Rondos ... Calef Brown's poems read like a guest list of Who's Who in Kalamazoo. I loved it. He writes poems we want to turn into desserts.” ―Jack Gantos, Newbery Award–winning author

“The best books can take you to places you never knew existed. Hypnotize a Tiger will blast you there on a Skyscraper Rocket with imaginary companions, herds of wordplay, and a giant smile. Calef Brown is the surreal deal.” ―Kenn Nesbit, U.S. Children's Poet Laureate

“Brown is a superb craftsman, with jazzy rhythms that get your whole body moving and a gift for embedded rhymes” ―Sarah Ellis, The Horn Book

“Brown makes great use of wordplay, and the staccato syllables make the poems fun to read aloud. Little ones who enjoy funny verse will be tickled by this title.” ―Booklist

“There were certain books that fascinated and excited me as a child. I read them over and over, and they changed my perceptions forever. This is a book like that. It makes a delightful playground of language and concept. Calef Brown is a hero. He is a bulwark against mediocrity. He is my hero too.” ―Daniel Pinkwater, author, artist, and radio commentator

“With witty poems combined with his amazing paintings, Calef Brown has made his distinct mark in the history of American culture as a true literary treasure.” ―Dan Santat, award-winning author and illustrator

“In your hands you hold a very special book. Get ready to meet a spectacular and hilarious cast of delightfully goofy and whimsical characters that live in each of these delicious poems. Calef Brown has made me feel like a mustached baby tasting sugar for the first time!” ―Jorge R. Gutierrez, director of "The Book of Life" and creator (with wife Sandra Equihua) of "El Tigre, The Adventures of Manny Rivera"

Let me tell you something about how I review. Board books? Pshaw. I can take one and write a nine-paragraph review parsing precisely why it is that Bizzy Bear’s preferred companions are dogs and bunnies. Nonfiction? Lay it on me. I’ll take infinite pleasure in discussing the difference between informational texts when I was a child (long story short, they sucked) and our current golden age. But there is one book genre that lays me flat. Stops me short. Makes it exceedingly difficult for me to get my head in order. Truly, children’s poetry books are the hardest to review. I don’t know exactly why this is. They are the most unloved of the books for kids. No American Library Association accredited awards are made specifically for them. They get checked out of libraries one month a year (April = National Poetry Month) and then lie forgotten. Yet so many of them are bite-sized wallops of greatness. “Hypnotize a Tiger” by Calef Brown is one of these chosen few. Not many poetry books for kids sport blurbs from Daniel Pinkwater (who found a soul mate in Brown’s art) to Jack Gantos to The Book of Life director Jorge R. Gutierrez. And few author/illustrators are allowed to go as positively wacky and wild as Brown does here. From tomato ultimatums and loofah tortes to velocipede odes and dodgebull (rather than dodgeball) you honestly never know where the book is going next. And you're grateful for it.So if it’s so great (and it is) why is reviewing a book of this sort the devil to do? There are any number of reasons. When reviewing a book with, say, a plot, it’s awfully easy for me to merely recap the plot, dish on the characters, bring up some single strange or scintillating point, then close it all down with a conclusion. Easy peasy. But poetry’s not really like that. There’s no plot to “Hypnotize a Tiger”. There’s not even a running gag that keeps cropping up throughout the pages. Each poem is its own little world. As a result, I’m stuck generalizing about the poems as a whole. And because we are dealing with 84-85 (depending on how you count) of them in total, I’m probably going to end up saying something about how some of the poems work and others don’t. This is kind of a cheat when you’re reviewing a collection of this sort because almost no children’s poetry book is absolutely perfect (Example A: The fact that Shel Silverstein wrote “Hug-a-War” . . . I rest my case). They will always consist of some verses that work and others that do not. In the end, the best I can hope for when reviewing poetry is to try to find something that makes it different from all the other poetry books published in a given year. Fortunately for me, Mr. Brown is consistently interesting. As Pinkwater said in his blurb, “He is a bulwark against mediocrity.”I’m very interested in the question of how to get kids around to reading poetry. My own daughter is four at this time and we’ve found that Shel Silverstein’s poetry books make for good bedtime reading (though she’s still thrown off by the occasional grotesquerie). For many children, Silverstein is the gateway drug. But Calef Brown, though he swims in Shel’s surrealism soaked seas, is a different breed entirely from his predecessor. Where Shel went for the easy silly ideas, Brown layers his ridiculousness with a bit of sophistication. Anyone could write a poem about waking up to find a beehive attached to the underside of their chin. It takes a Calef Brown to go one step further and have the unfortunate soul consider the monetary implications. Or to consider the verbal capabilities of Hoboken-based gnomes. So “Hypnotize a Tiger” becomes a book meant for the kid with a bit of prior poetry knowledge under their belt. You wouldn’t hand this title to a reluctant reader. You’d give it to the kid who’d already devoured all the Silverstein and Prelutsky and came to you asking, “What else you got?” That kid might be ready. It is useful to note that you need to read this book aloud as well. There should be a warning sticker on the cover that says as much. Not that Brown makes it easy for you. Take the poem “Hugh”, for example. Short and simple it reads, “Meet my Belgian friend / He lives near Bruges, on a farm. / His name is Hugh Jarm.” Then at the bottom one of the tiny interstitial poems reads, “I once had a dream I was visiting Bruges - / snacking on chocolates while riding a luge.” Now the correct pronunciation of “Bruges” isn’t really necessary in the first poem, though it helps. The little tiny poem, however, is interesting because while it works especially well when you pronounce it correctly, you could probably mangle the wordplay easy peasy and still end up with a successful poem. SLJ probably said it best when they mentioned in their review of the book that, “Though there is more than one line that does not roll easily off the tongue and awkward rhymes abound, it is easy to see this clumsiness as part of the spirit of the collection.”The subtitle of the collection is “Poems About Just About Everything” and that’s a fairly accurate representation. It does not mean, however, that there isn’t an internal logic to what’s being included here. There’s a chapter of animal poems, of people, insects, vehicles, schools, food, and then more esoteric descriptions like “Facts Poetic”, “Word Crashes”, and “Miscellaneous Silliness.” No poem directly applies to another, but they still manage to work together in tandem fairly well.I don’t think it’s a serious criticism of a book to say that it's not for all audiences. Calef Brown is an acquired taste. A taste best suited to the cleverest of the youngsters, absolutely, but acquired just the same. Not everyone is drawn to his style, and more fool they. To my mind, there is room enough in this world for any Calef Brown collection you can name. This book doesn’t have the widely popular feel of, say, a “We Go Together” but nor is the author writing poems simply to hear himself speak. “Hypnotize a Tiger” is a book built to please fans of creative curated silliness. Don’t know if you’ll like it? There’s only one way to find out. Pick this puppy up and read it to a kid. The book may surprise you (and so might the kid!).For ages 9-12.

Younger readers will enjoy the artwork and the way the poems bounce around in their mouths. Older readers will enjoy the artwork (of course!) and will pick up on all the word play throughout! I especially enjoyed: Bubble Crumbs :)"P.S. And remember: words are like friends. It helps to know lots- for sentences, paragraphs, stories and thoughts. (Not to mention sonnets, speeches, and choruses.) Hooray for dictionaries and thesauruses!" pg. 138

Put Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear and Ogden Nash into a blender (ouch, but you get the gist) and you would end up with Calef Brown. Excellent for teachers as well as kids - great possibilities for language arts lessons.

Ebook PDF How to Draw Cool Stuff: Shading, Textures and Optical Illusions, by Catherine Holmes

“How to Draw Cool Stuff: Basics, Shading, Texture, Pattern and Optical Illusions” is the second book in the How to Draw Cool Stuff series. Inside you will find simple illustrations that cover the necessities of drawing cool stuff. Specific exercises are provided that offer step-by-step guidelines for drawing a variety of subjects. Each lesson starts with an easy-to-draw shape that will become the basic structure of the drawing. From there, each step adds elements to that structure, allowing the artist to build on their creation and make a more detailed image. Starting with the basic forms, the artist is provided a guide to help see objects in terms of simplified shapes. Instructions for shading to add depth, contrast, character and movement to a drawing are then covered. The varieties of texture and pattern that can be included in an artwork offer another layer of interest and depth to a design. These elements are necessary to indicate the way something looks like it feels in a work (texture) or creating the repetition of shapes, lines or colors (patterns). Illustrated optical illusions involve images that are sensed and perceived to be different from what they really are, showing examples of how the mind and the eyes can play tricks on each other. All you need is a piece of paper, a pencil and an eraser and you are ready to draw cool stuff. Once the drawing is complete, it can be colored, shaded or designed in any way you like to make it original. Following these exercises is a great way to practice your craft and begin seeing things in terms of simple shapes within a complex object.

37 of 38 people found the following review helpful. Stop reading reviews- Just buy this book. By nyc amazon customer Don't read this. Just get the book. If it really disappoints you, you can return it. But it probably won't. If I had to travel with one book, it would be this. And massive value for the contents. If you're unsure, read on but either way, click and get this thing. I've combed HUNDREDS 'how to draw' books, bought costly tomes, scoured and tried many many free and at-cost websites, online videos etc. No there's no substitute for say, a four year fine-art degree or a massive graphics and art book and media tutorial library. But of the zillion books in the $5-$150 dollar range (imagine building a library in that price range) - at least THIS BOOK- puts an impressively vast, but well broken-down and easy to understand- array of techniques and also- and this is big- of styles and basic shapes, and design methods most of us want to draw, but even with practice, find the principles and proportions elusive-- all here, between two covers. Under $20. Why are you still reading this? Get it.Pros- (so much here) - basic "never drew anything" folks can get started right away. The book has basic 2-d and 3-d figures, guidelines, shading and texture. NO need to get twenty books to comb for the same information-advanced drawing - to BOTH- engage advanced draftspersons and illustrators get into 3-D, optics and also styles that most, even advance books don't show. WHILE breaking down the process so beginners can ALSO grasp and actually draw the really tricky stuff.- Major difficult stuff in here, simply shown. eg- figure proportions, HANDS (yes THAT tough bit-made easy, anatomical proportions laid out simply. ,- Complex figures (seahorses, snails, etc) broken down, so a beginner can see and add the basic principles up to complex drawings right away.-Super-tricky optical illusion drawing (soap bubbles, escher stairs, optical illusion endless knots) broken down and made very easy.-Realistic styles as well as several different types (that zen doodling thing, but also action principles, skin and surface textures, different drawing techniques (crosshatch, stipple, stone and glass fracture) all handled easily here.- Includes (but doesn't make a burdened complicated mess of) some actual pencils out there, as well as including all the texture drawing techniques (crosshatch, stipple, blending, highlight.)The real plus on that, is that you're not locked into a single style. These drawing methods adapt SO readily- whether you are doing photo-realism, mechanical type illustration, 2-d line drawing, cartoon, or very imaginative fantasy. It CONTAINS specific items and drawing frameworks, but arms you with the techniques to adapt the basics to your own style and projects. THIS I think is what makes this book so 'money'. or 'super value'. (SO many others rely on 'one style' or are so basic that how to get a style from the bare bones of circle, triange square, shade- done- don't have.)Mainly- the book is a 'know, understand, do' method. You're not saddled with seeing one style replicated by a master a thousand times, way over your head (you know those books. "Street scene'. First draw a few rectangles. Then just add (a million really difficult techniques and bits that go completely unexplained because the artist can DO them but can't EXPLAIN those to the rest of us!)Even if you can't read instructions well or 'follow what a super-experienced artist does"- you can look at the guidelines and the way the tricks work and do it yourself readily.Cons- I find the cons here so minor, and so true of many other books that cost a lot more, videos that have poor visuals etc but here goes: -Most wording is good but- a bit of the long list of verbal 'know, understand do' hints on each facing page, are a bit superfluous or underdeveloped. (I skip some of the copious reading...)-You are mostly NOT stuck with 'the artist's own style' but an advanced imaginative artist might find some of the basic guidelines a bit unnecessary or the 'how to', a bit more geared towards fast illustration (a bit more 'realistic charicature' than 'draw from life.)That's true and a bit of a drawback in that it won't teach anyone deep 'life drawing', but on the backside, it's really hard to develop your own style if you do NOT know the visual language. It's not 'cartoon visual language'.So the method is brisk- LOTS of visual language tricks, lots of general principles but quick and easy to adopt, and also some really intricate specific items, but really well and quickly broken down to get into easily- to get anyone up to speed. Some might find it a bit too 'tricks and tips' over 'hardcore life drawing' but - on the balance, it is miles above JUST 'cartoon' styles and- it allows someone the visual language common to both realistic life drawing and wild charicature. The book is surprisingly useful even to more advanced life drawing. It's the golden fleece of 'simple' without being tediously babyish, and yet has advanced styles, but so easy a beginner can do them, yet sophisticated enough that and advanced person can throw those into their already very skilled repertoire. It's a book of visual language skills, not a life-drawing course, but it will enhance a skilled life-drawing person, get them over some tricky reflection and hand and expression hurdles. Now that you've spent time on the review, I hope you were only reading it WHILE waiting for your book to come. It's not your mother's 'draw a happy tree' one-method fits all, book. Catherine Holmes studied the real hardcore deal MFA mechanical and life drawing and teaching- and this and her first book? Holmes is AMAZEBALLS. For under $20, she doesn't impress you with 'how great she is'. She arms you with all the right teaching and visual skills to very quickly impress yourself with how well YOU can draw. And that is really key to what makes any drawing book worthwhile. This the thing you find and wish Amazon had the magical six-star button for. .

An enjoyable and "cool" sequel to the first How to Draw Cool Stuff book by Holmes By Bookish If you liked Catherine Holmes' first book, How to Draw Cool Stuff: A Drawing Guide for Teachers and Students, then you'll like this sequel as much.Once again, Holmes opens with similar encouragement and general tips for students, slightly reworded (and some saved/elaborated upon for an ending in this book rather than ending abruptly with a lesson). The teacher specific instructions aren't as extensive; personally I think inserting the same instructions verbatim from the first book would be fine for continuity and a refresher. This book includes a table of contents (hooray!) whereas the first didn't.This book is structured like the first with each lesson containing the know, understand, do and vocabulary prior to actually drawing. I think this works great for teachers and students alike. If students understand the principles behind the lesson, they are more prepared for the actual mechanics of drawing. Many will probably produce better, more skilled artwork with this background knowledge. This book, as the title suggests, covers shading, textures and optical illusions. Lessons are new and not repetitive from the first book. Shading lessons include flowers, ribbon, a pear, and a portrait. Then some lessons are broken down into a line art drawing (studies simple shapes, curves, etc.) and their counterpart shaded version. Other lessons include the skeleton, mandalas (I especially like the personalized mandala), a dreamcatcher, Zen Doodles, optical illusions, and "impossible objects" ( MC Escher-esque geometrics). Zen Doodles are basically zentangles, but covered briefly from a beginner standpoint. The "cool stuff" section includes a chain link heart lock, hourglass, baseball cap, koi fish, t-Rex dino, self portrait with text, Rube Goldberg machine, sugar skulls and a human heart. Some students might not find some of these to be "cool," but most should enjoy at least some of them. The basics of the human head portrait are repeated, but not the detailed features like eyes and lips as in book one.One thing I would've like to seen:-- an illustration showing how the placement of shading changes with the position of the light sourceThe book wraps up with encouraging tips such as the uniqueness of your own art and the rewards of creativity. How to Draw Cool Stuff: Shading, Texture, Pattern and Optical Illusions is a worthy sequel and Holmes fans will enjoy it.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Highly recommend By Reader2 I love the book. It's simple and easy to follow. The directions progress step-by-step, in logical increments for a beginner. The author starts with the basics and builds up to more complicated drawings. It's an amazing resource if you're learning how to draw on your own. I highly recommend it.

Amazing Faces, by Lee Bennett Hopkins

From School Library Journal Grade 4–6—"You can read many things in her face," says Joseph Bruchac in describing Aunt Molly Sky, a venerable Native American storyteller. Aunt Molly is one of 16 people, varied in age and ethnicity, whose everyday lives are reflected in this picture-book anthology. Faces figure prominently in some poems as Hopkins and Soentpiet celebrate America's diversity. "Amazing Face" belongs to a chortling Asian baby who is addressed by a blond mother, and the concluding poem, Langston Hughes's "My People," is paired with a multiracial crowd waving flags in a city fireworks scene. Some of the voices and warm watercolor portraits are necessarily specific—Chinatown's child who lives "above Good Fortune/where they catch crabs fresh" or "Latina, abuela, she is everyone/of us come from otherwhere." Some experiences—dreams, loneliness, the heroism of a returning soldier or a smoke-smudged firefighter—are universal. Varied in shape, each poem is set on an ivory half-page next to a broad scene—sometimes a single child, other times a small group or an energetic crowd. This appealing package of poetry and ideas will be enjoyed by children, parents, and teachers. There are many bits to savor, and the underlying theme is so well executed that it could easily stimulate interest in finding more people in poems.—Margaret Bush, Simmons College, Boston (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

From Booklist Illustrated with large, handsome watercolor portraits, the 16 poems in this anthology celebrate the rich diversity of American kids—what makes each one special and the connections between them. Most poems are original to this collection, except for the final, “My People,” by Langston Hughes, which is paired with a close-up view of a huge crowd of parents and kids of many backgrounds that also appears on the cover. A sad kid is not accepted by the in-crowd in Jude Mandell's “I'm the One.” In contrast, Pat Mora's poem features a Latino boy who finds bliss in solitude (“I like to count the stars”). Jane Medina's “Me x 2” includes Spanish translation of the lines and shows the riches of bilingualism: “I do twice as much.” And Jane Yolen's “Karate Kid” is a fun read-aloud (“Chop / Kick / Peace / Power”) and features a dynamic portrait of a girl in action. A great collection for sharing at home and in the classroom. Grades 2-5. --Hazel Rochman

I just bought a copy for my family. The book is stunningly illustrated and each poem somehow stands out and flows seamlessly together. There are selections from the famous and the not-yet-famous. I was especially struck by the poem by Mary E. Cronin: Firefighter's Face...I felt the the heat and exhaustion of that firefighter. Great book! Great Gift! It is a keeper. I give it 5 stars.

Rodgers Just as everyone has a story to tell, every person's face portrays a unique blend of feelings, history, and background. This new anthology presents children with 16 poems by an acclaimed group of poets and authors, each expressing a compelling set of circumstances and emotions. Illustrator Chris Soentpiet has applied his distinctive style to the accompanying paintings, all of which portray people across diverse age groups and racial and ethnic backgrounds. Several of the poems and illustrations convey an economic setting or story, including a young child who sits with his mother while she works as a seamstress in Chinatown, a bilingual girl who is pleased to be able to read both the Spanish and English parts of a Mexican restaurant's menu, and a tired firefighter who labors on to put out the flames. It can be a nice change of pace to introduce children to economic themes using poetry and art, and this anthology certainly fits the bill.

Delightful Pictures and Poems By Susan Quinn I met Jude Mandell - author, poet, teacher, singer - peeking from behind her book Amazing Faces at a conference booksale. And I say her book, even though Amazing Faces is a collection of poems edited by Lee Bennett Hopkins and illustrated by Chris Soentpiet, and only one poem is Mandell's - but her fervor for the book was impressive.Jude's poem is typical of the wonderfully emotional poems that fill this beautiful book.I'm the oneYou heard crying,Walking homeFrom schoolToday. In simple but powerful language and life-like illustrations, Amazing Faces captures children's faces and the emotions they wear on them as they play, pout, laugh, and sleep. The 16 poems come from esteemed children's writers such as Jane Yolen and amazing poets like Langston Hughes. The night is beautiful,So the faces of my people. There is power in those words! Chris Soentpiet's illustrations leap off the page, whether the tight-fisted karate kicker or the boyish-faced young soldier returning home. My favorite is the Good Fortune Seafood Market, filled with a busyness of fish in baskets and red paper lanterns, and where Janet S. Wong writes about living "around the corner from Heaven's Supermarket, where all lines are cash only."Delightful.Lee and Low is a small publisher that focuses on "stories that children of color can identify with and that all children can enjoy." Amazing faces certainly meets that charter and moves hearts as well. I think art draws all levels of readers into books, and poetry can be particularly demanding on readers, and thus ideally suited for advanced readers. I heartily recommend Amazing Faces to move hearts of all ages.

A Useful -- but Flawed -- Guide to Your Taxes By Great Faulkner's Ghost This books is useful, but it did not leave me feeling that I could truly rely on it, due to some glaring errors I encountered in areas that I am well-familiar with. It will alert you to potential deductions -- that is the good part. The bad part is that significant limitations and qualifications attached to some of these deductions (eg., long term care insurance; IRD - income in respect to a decedent/inherited IRAs; bond premium) are not clearly noted or explained, and are in some cases overlooked.. Not usually, I will add, but often enough to be of concern. Indeed, one gets the impression that some pages have not even been proof-read, let alone reviewed by a skilled practitioner (see the box for IRD-- even the arithmetic is wrong). Lasser's flagship book, Your Income Taxes, J.K. Lasser's Your Income Tax 2016: For Preparing Your 2015 Tax Return is thoroughly vetted, and better than many professional guides. I cannot say the same for this (although the style is more engaging). This is many ways a very good book, but because it suffers from sloppy drafting and negligence, I really think it exposes you to audit risk. Use it for ideas, but it would be unwise to rely on it solely. You would want to check anything you are unfamiliar with against thebig JK Lasser Guide, or of course, the appropriate IRS publication.

Paid for itself By David Allen I dog eared the pages as I read through, then went back to each spot as I filled out my tax forms and accounted for everything. There were a few tips that were new from last year, and overall I saved much more than the price of the book.

Clever By Coffee Addicted Writer (Billy) Just when you thought it was safe to read a book, "Goosebumps Horrorland" is back in the first of seven new stories. While in Horrorland, Andy and his cousin Marnie stumble into the Chiller's House store. The owner, Jonathan Chiller, gives him a free gift - a haunted tooth. The tooth will give you unlimited wishes, like a genie. After making a few wishes, Andy starts hearing a strange howling at night. To makes things worse, Marnie starts acting weird.I was surprised when I heard that R.L. Stine would continue the series. "When The Ghost Howls" is a clever read. I especially like the ending, which ends in a cliffhanger. I can't wait for the next book.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. ... I Howl Back By Amy S. My eight-year-old daughter and I have been reading Goosebumps lately, but this one became so quickly intense that we had to stop after reading about a fourth of the book. The partial scoop:1. Main characters are threatened by possibly real zombies (the characters were not sure if they were real or not, not I); tension abounds in this scene.2. Character is knocked unconscious and wakes up to find himself surrounded by unknown people who claim to be his immediate family. A bit confusing here, and creepy for security-craving kids.3. Male main character is granted a wish to be thousands of miles away from his cousin (something like that); his wish is granted, and he finds himself deep in space. The fear here is chillingly palpable. (This is where we stopped.)Basically- Jumps around to too many overwhelming horror facets; I was so relieved when my daughter voiced her negative opinion on it that I just said "Yeah, I agree..." and tossed it on the floor. It seemed like Stine just could not pick one theme/plot for this book; we got the horror gamut here with no structure. And let me tell you- I am a total devotee to both the written word and motion pictures that deal with horror, and just tonight in a play session with my daughter, she introduced a vampire chihuahua character complete with blood on her muzzle (Magic Marker). We are no strangers to the realm of horror, but this book was just too much. Stick with the 90's Goosebumps.
