Get Into Art Telling Stories: Discover Great Art and Create Your Own!, by Susie Brooks

From School Library Journal Gr 3–6—This colorful and enlightening volume offers examples of exciting, visually arresting paintings and other works of art that tell stories—some historical, some imaginary, some mysterious, all brilliantly rendered by their creators and superbly reproduced here. For instance, Henri Matisse's Icarus brings to life a well-known Greek myth, while Edward Hopper's Automat leaves it to the viewer to decide what's going on. As in the other titles in this highly successful series, the original works are presented on the verso, while the recto contains a brief explanation, conveying just enough information to help young readers understand the works and the stories they tell without becoming overwhelmed. Opening the foldouts on each page reveals a variety of related projects. Some may seem a tad daunting for inexperienced or timid crafters, whose final results may not look as accomplished and polished as those shown. Still, the author encourages children to try and reminds them that their own creations and choice of materials need not exactly resemble those in the book. A variety of media and techniques for the crafts are represented herein, and many artists and works, from different periods, are covered, including a 19th-century Native American who created pictographs on a buffalo hide. VERDICT A great option for browsers and as a supplement in art classes, along with the other titles in the series.—Carol Goldman, Queens Library, NY

Review “Brooks' goal to convince her readers that art is not just something one observes, but rather something that one does. It's impossible not to be intrigued. . . . The projects range in difficulty from those with beginners skills to those suited for more experienced young artists. . . . Brooks believes that a deeper appreciation of high art can be had by kids, and this revelatory offering encourages them to find it.” ―Booklist, STARRED REVIEW on Get Into Art: Animals

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Just buy it. By Melissa Durel Porter This entire series is an absolute MUST for any art teacher or parent interested in exposing their kids to art. It features a lot of paintings and art pieces that are not often seen, so the material is very fresh and relevant. Too many of these kids' art books show the same paintings over and over again, so this is a welcome change. The activities that the book presents in conjunction with each piece are unique and interesting, too. A great change of pace. The layout is great, the text is concise and informative without being too wordy, and the color prints of the artwork are a terrific size that spans two pages. BRAVO!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A must purchase book that delves into artwork. By Bob Walch This is a must purchase for teachers and home schooling parents who wish to engage their students/child in some very cool art projects. Not only does the author offer a brief discussion of each of the dozen artworks featured and a short biography of the artist but the various projects related to the pieces are well thought-out and fun. This is the fourth book in the series and all of them are excellent and provide a great resource for teaching art and art appreciation. You'll love this book!Book provided by publisher.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. could be included in science homeschooling curriculum By ScotFlower I would not give this book to a kid younger than 1st or 2nd grade... mostly because the pages include sentences to read (instructions, facts, etc.) Also quite a few pages expect the artist to draw without necessarily giving any examples of what to draw... which may mean looking some stuff up if you care about it being accurate and/or are using this book as a part of homeschooling curriculum. There is a lot to love about this book from being "gender inclusive" to enabling imaginative drawing.... but what I like best is that so many of these pages could be included in science homeschooling curriculum... why? Because they ask you to draw what you would see under a microscope or in the deep sea, give facts like how many volts an electric eel gives off or what animal has the most deadly venom, and the text uses words like species and Mariana Trench. There are other pages that are more art focused on patterns and coloring, but the science part was such a wonderful surprise. The only con is the pages do not lay flat so you lose drawing space in the crack and it makes it awkward to color the entire space. Some people would pay to have this book spiral bound in order to make it more user friendly. I don't know if I am one of those people yet ;-)

The price is unbeatable! She enjoys doodling in the book daily. The book contains lightly printed doodles to inspire the student as well as blank pages with doodle ideas printed on the bottom of the page. This book will surely last us the whole school year!

It was less expensive here on Amazon so this is where I bought it. My 9 year old is really enjoying doodling in this book. Would recommend this to anyone who is homeschooling as it goes very well with studies of underwater fish and mammals.

The Best Friend Battle (Sylvie Scruggs, Book 1), by Lindsay Eyre

From School Library Journal Gr 2–4—There are so many reasons why Sylvie Scruggs doesn't like Georgie Diaz. He didn't invite her to his "welcome-Georgie-to-the neighborhood party," he makes fun of the way she pitches, and, worst of all, he's a boy. Now, Sylvie finds out that while she was away on her family's annual two-week vacation, Georgie stole her best friend, Miranda, right out from under her. Miranda and Sylvie have been best friends since they were babies. They had everything in common, and now Georgie is trying to come between them. Sylvie has to do something to keep Georgie from taking her place in Miranda's life. But will her plan work before Miranda's big birthday party? Eyre's laugh-out-loud debut novel captures the discovery of the opposite sex in a fun and realistic way, while Santoso's black-and-white artwork brings the personalities of the characters to life. Fans of Junie B. Jones will love the adventures of this heroine as they become engaged in this early chapter book.—Annette Herbert, F. E. Smith Elementary School, Cortland, NY

A cute chapter book that manages to pack in kid humor and some real (though gentle) themes of pet loss and friendship negotiation while not being condescending. It's hard to write a chapter book that sounds authentic, and Eyre pulled it off.

Kids will relate to Sylvie's worries and self-doubts By Janet Hamilton Summary: Sylvie and Miranda have been best friends just about their whole lives. But now a new boy in the neighborhood, Georgie, is becoming friends with Miranda, and Sylvie is worried that she’s losing her friend. She decides that Miranda’s upcoming birthday party is her chance to prove what a good friend she is by giving the most spectacular present she can find. Her misguided attempts result in a stolen ferret, a twisted ankle, and an enormous cardboard castle covered with glitter glue. Will Miranda appreciate Sylvie’s efforts, or is their friendship doomed to come to an end? Grades 2-4.Pros: Sylvie is a likable character with worries and self-doubts that many kids will relate to. Her clumsy but heartfelt efforts at friendship will engage beginning chapter book readers.Cons: The stolen ferret storyline made me anxious.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A book that rises above the dreck By NCTH There is so much dreck out there for children--much of it well-intentioned, but misguided by the overzealous application of those intentions. Eyre's debut chapter book for middle-graders accomplishes its goal, stretching a child's notion of friendship without putting readers on the rack. The author uses an equally light touch on such perennial issues as challenging parental authority, dealing with the death of a pet, and confessing to misdemeanors. Funny but unforced, clever, and uncloying, The Best Friend Battle is a book I can recommend to my grandchildren and other young friends without reservation.

Scare Scape: Book 2, by Sam Fisher

From Booklist Morton and his family have just moved into a creepy old Victorian mansion. Unlike most kids, Morton, a big fan of the horror comic Scare Scape, is thrilled by the home’s spooky cobwebbed corners and secret passageways. While mowing the lawn, Morton comes across a stone gargoyle buried in the dirt, with three wish-granting fingers and one ominous warning about getting what you ask for. Morton and his brother and sister each make a wish, and “Monkey’s Paw”–style, they get way more than they bargained for. The kids battle a series of grotesque and powerful monsters (all illustrated like trading cards in the opening pages), investigate a town-wide case of missing cats, and discover the truth behind the mysterious death of John King, the renowned, reclusive author of Scare Scape, who just so happens to have lived in the house before them. Throw in some maggot-infested steaks, wall-scaling demons, and an evil teacher, and you’ve got a Lovecraft-lite debut full of monster-fighting action and a dark-magic mystery that, while flimsy at times, will nonetheless appeal to burgeoning horror fans. Grades 4-7. --Sarah Hunter

Review Praise for SCARE SCAPE:"Fisher's debut's an imaginative, not-too-dark urban fantasy. . . . Fans of spooky fiction and comics will be in a dark and happy place." - KIRKUS REVIEWS"This scary, but not too scary, horror novel has excellent characters; a well-developed plot; and clear, well-paced writing . . . filling the gap between R. L. Stine's Goosebumps and Darren Shan's The Demonata series." - SLJ"Straddling the genres of horror, low fantasy, and action thriller, with slight nods to The Twilight Zone and E. Nesbit, this book holds high appeal for kids like Morton who are fascinated with the creepy and the weird, and the strong characterization, authentic conflict within a family reeling from the loss of a mother, and Morton's impressive inner strength while under pressure add dimension. . . . Give this one to kids looking for something a step up from Goosebumps." - BCCB"A Lovecraft-lite debut full of monster-fighting action and a dark-magic mystery." - BOOKLIST

Although it's targeted towards younger readers it's definitely enjoyable for people well over that age. The story is engrossing, the characters are well developed, plus there's the fun of magic and monsters! I have a feeling this book will be a best-seller. Buy it for your kids but read it yourself!

It was very fun for me to read as well, somewhat like I can enjoy the early Harry Potter books (the later ones were a bit dark for young children). This book was age appropriate.

By Mom of Five If building (or learning about) simple motorized Lego models is your thing, this book will please you. Again, no words but a little more interesting than his Simple Machines book. You have to be rather visually/spatially oriented to reproduce his designs, since he just gives a few views of the designs--no stepwise building instructions.

McGehee’s lyrical nonfiction story recounts the 1918–1919 winter spent on Alaska’s Fox Island from the point of view of nine-year-old Rocky, son of the painter Rockwell Kent. Vivid scratchboard-styleillustrations echo the rugged subject matter with enchantment as Rocky explores the wilderness and becomes accustomed to island life. My Wilderness: An Alaskan Adventure, by Claudia McGehee

From School Library Journal K-Gr 4—In this beautifully presented text, McGehee brings to life the true story of Rockwell "Rocky" Kent III's adventures with his father, Rockwell Kent II, as they spent seven months on a remote island off Seward, AK, during the winter of 1918. Nine-year-old Rocky begs his mother to let him accompany his father on a painting expedition, which finds them living with Lars Olsen, an old trapper, and Olsen's family of angora goats. McGehee's meticulous scratchboard illustrations pair with Rocky's first-person narrative to foster a tone of wonder and discovery, as driftwood becomes a lookout on the beach and whale fin sightings become pirate ships. The love between father and son is woven throughout the text in the images of Robinson Crusoe read-alouds and joint snow baths in powdery piles outside their cabin. This is a clearly formed tale of father-son adventure that has a nostalgic feel. VERDICT A tale to treasure again and again as either a storytime read-aloud or an independent read.—Colleen S. Banick, Westport Public Schools, CT

Review In this beautifully presented text, McGehee brings to life the true story of Rockwell "Rocky" Kent III’s adventures with his father, Rockwell Kent II, as they spent seven months on a remote island off Seward, AK, during the winter of 1918 . . . McGehee’s meticulous scratchboard illustrations pair with Rocky’s first-person narrative to foster a tone of wonder and discovery, as driftwood becomes a lookout on the beach and whale fin sightings become pirate ships. The love between father and son is woven throughout the text in the images of Robinson Crusoe read-alouds and joint snow baths in powdery piles outside their cabin. This is a clearly formed tale of father-son adventure that has a nostalgic feel. VERDICT: A tale to treasure again and again as either a storytime read-aloud or an independent read.—School Library Journal, STARRED REVIEWThree well-calculated pairs of suspenseful rectos followed by a harmless, concluding page turn keep readers riveted while meting out facts. As the boy heads down a trail, he hears noises that he knows could be a grizzly bear. The page turn reveals a beautiful black-inked portrait of a porcupine. The woodcuts capture the joys of playing in the snow, the warmth of stories by lamplight, occasional loneliness and the hazards of a storm at sea. . . A taste of wilderness of yore to whet the appetites of future fans of Laura Ingalls Wilder, Louise Erdrich and Kirkpatrick Hill.—Kirkus ReviewsClaudia McGehee has created a beautiful companion and homage to Wilderness with her picture book My Wilderness: An Alaskan Adventure. Based on Kent’s memoir and other historical sources, McGehee imagines the story of their time on Fox Island from Rocky’s point of view. It’s a brilliant approach to a fascinating story, all the more fitting for the scratchboard illustrations that echo Kent’s drawings. Though different in format, medium, and execution, both illustrators convey the energy and grandeur of the environment, as well as humor and attention to details of daily life.—Kid Lit NorthIn this gorgeously illustrated biographical father-son adventure, McGehee takes us back to one 1918 winter when early American Modernist artist Rockwell Kent II spent seven months on Fox Island off the coast of Seward, Alaska, with his 9-year-old son, Rocky, at "a time when the world was wide, travel was slow and unexpected adventures happened, even to children." . . . It is evident that wilderness lives in McGehee’s naturalist heart as well, shown passionately through her subject matter . . . Ending the book with a wonderful author’s note and three historic photographs showing Rocky, his father and Mr. Olson with goats alongside their small wilderness cabin, McGehee also includes a thoughtful teacher’s guide with discussion questions and activity suggestions.—The Gazette, Cedar Rapids

About the Author Claudia McGehee is a Pacific Northwest native and Midwest transplant. An award-winning author and illustrator of three natural history picture books, Claudia became captivated by Rockwell Kent and his family’s story after happening upon his paintings.

Charming story, beauifully illustrated By ChasM "My Wilderness" is inspired by artist Rockwell Kent’s memoire of his year on Fox Island in Alaska in 1918 with his nine-year-old son, told through the eyes of his son as imagined by author Claudia McGehee. The brief and charming story of the joys and hardship of life in the wilderness is further brought to life by the author’s own beautiful and sensitive illustrations. The illustrations alone make the book a treasure to be read again and again. Although the book is intended for young audiences, I highly recommend it for all ages, young and old.

By Rob Natiuk “When I was nine years old, I lived one winter on Fox Island with my father, an old trapper named Olson, six blue fox, a family of angora goats and Squirlie. This is what happened.”The author and illustrator, award-winning Claudia McGehee, steps into the boy’s character and tells the story from his first-person perspective. She sticks faithfully to the boy’s true story of the 1918–1919 winter spent on Alaska’s Fox Island. The boy is Rocky, son of the painter Rockwell Kent. Adding just the right feel and look to the mood of the story are the illustrations in vivid scratchboard-style, capturing the mood of the island.Alaska today still fosters wonder and newness, but how much more back almost 100 years ago! I also felt deep empathy with father and son in this story as they adventure and bond together. Not only the lonely terrain of the island is part of the story but the wildlife of bald eagles, porcupines, whales, owls and other birds.“Squirlie” is never described, but the illustration portrays him/her as – a pet squirrel, often tucked into Rocky’s pocket and peeking out. True to fact – but still so pet-boyishly delightful.

By Angela I enjoyed these five stories a lotThey were all very sweet and lovely as well as the illustrations I thought were splendid! The jokes or riddles were also very funny . There was not anything in this ebook that I did not like , it was another clean read! I highly recommend this ebook for children especially who love to read such cute and adorable animal stories but even for any grownups who prefer such a sweet and short animal stories to read anytime they are so inclined to do so! I am giving this ebook for children five stars for all the reasons that have already been stated here in this review. I received this ebook forfree and have given it an honest review! Super job Arnie! By Angela

One night he comes to a farm where one of the sheds has been left open. There he lies down on some discarded towels. When he awakes the sun is already up. Uh oh! He has slept late. Hearing a young boy calling for his grandpa, Lonely Dog wonders if he is going to get into trouble but no, he gets adopted! This is just the beginning of his new life! There are five stories in chronological order in this book for youngsters. At the end of some of them you will even find a "Just for Fun" activity and at the end of the book there are jokes and mazes. What do cats eat on a hot day? Mice Cream!A linked index on the Kindle allows the reader to quickly find their favorite uplifting and encouraging story. Important to note that apart from the picture at the beginning of each story/chapter there are no other pictures so this is not what I would call a picture book. Great for reading to your kids. Thanks, Liz

The Criminal Justice system is broken: both the ideal of justice and that of rehabilitation have been lost, but there is hope. Everyone can agree on that. Right now, the Criminal Justice system costs too much, it punishes those with drug problems and mental illness who commit crimes, but doesn’t offer them the help that they need, and often, it merely slaps the wrist of violent offenders who go on to offend over and over again. Prosecutors, Defense Attorneys, Judges and the public can all agree that “the system” isn’t working. Georgia Criminal Defense Attorney, Jason W. Swindle, Sr. has stepped up in The Verdict Is In: Fix the Criminal Justice System to offer innovative new ideas and a fresh vision for fixing the broken criminal justice system in an effort to get this important national conversation started. The Verdict Is In pulls back the curtain of the legal system itself for the uninitiated to see “how it really works in real life.”

People, children especially, have been baffled, bewildered, and even outraged by the fact that Pluto is no longer called a planet. Through whimsical artwork and an entertaining dialogue format, Pluto’s Secret explains the true story of this distant world. Providing a history of the small, icy world from its discovery and naming to its recent reclassification, this book presents a fascinating look at how scientists organize and classify our solar system as they gain new insights into how it works and what types of things exist within it. The book includes a glossary and bibliography. Pluto's Secret: An Icy World's Tale of Discovery, by Margaret Weitekamp, David DeVorkin, National Air and Space Museum

From Booklist This inventive picture book upends the indignation of Pluto’s defenders with a simple story. “For as long as the solar system has been the solar system,” the icy little world we call Pluto has enjoyed dancing with its moons and spinning on its side in a tilted orbit. He was not happy when Percival Lowell announced the discovery of a ninth planet, a “GREAT BIG ONE,” though he did approve of the choice of Pluto as his name. He knew he was different from the planets, and he always wanted to be identified with his friends in the Kuiper belt. When astronomers finally declared him to be a “dwarf planet” or a “Kuiper belt object,” his reaction was “BINGO!” Created with ink, watercolors, and colored pencils, cheerful artwork illustrates the text. The back matter features well-captioned photos and straightforward information. Written by two curators at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, this picture book offers a fresh, positive perspective on Pluto, showing that its change of status is not a demotion but a correction. Grades 1-4. --Carolyn Phelan

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic book! By Bookworm This book is marvellous in its simplicity, yet it provides all of the scientific information about Pluto. My 5 year old was fascinated by it!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. great book By mlegoria I saw this book at the Lowe Observatory, the observatory that first discovered and named Pluto in 1930. This book provides the background information for Pluto's change of classification and the process that scientists went through to finally define a planet. This book handles these topic in a way that is understandable for small children. I must have book for early childhood educators.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great book! By Suzanne McDowell My 7 year old loves this book. It answers all of her questions about Pluto, and even helped her feel better about Pluto's being "demoted".

Many have heard the story of a mortal girl who falls for a demon boy, but very few have heard it told like this. Damien was at the Mesonoxian club two miles out of the small town of Bentaway when he received his mark. His mark is the person he’s sent from his master to bully, crush, humiliate, torture, deceive, betray or destroy-someone who has a light too bright for his master’s eyes. That night brought both love and agony to him, for he met the beautiful Hallie Robin who also happens to be his mark. The one person Damien is meant to destroy is the same one that made him believe that there is something greater, lighter perhaps, inside him. Damien decides that he is what he is and must do his job. He knows the best way to destroy a girl like her: heartbreak. He knows how to do it too. He’s done it hundreds of times. He knows to keep close to her and make her feel like an angel then out of nowhere, let her realize that he was the devil and break her heart. But it’s not that simple. The more time Damien spends with her, the more he falls in love with her. Frantically debating between whether to save her and leave or stay with her and hurt her, more problems arise. Other demons are catching on to him. Hallie is asking about his many, many secrets. He’s giving too much of himself to her. And worse of all: there are still so many things about her that she won’t say. So here it rests broken but loved, the story of Hallie.
