From School Library Journal Gr 2–4—There are so many reasons why Sylvie Scruggs doesn't like Georgie Diaz. He didn't invite her to his "welcome-Georgie-to-the neighborhood party," he makes fun of the way she pitches, and, worst of all, he's a boy. Now, Sylvie finds out that while she was away on her family's annual two-week vacation, Georgie stole her best friend, Miranda, right out from under her. Miranda and Sylvie have been best friends since they were babies. They had everything in common, and now Georgie is trying to come between them. Sylvie has to do something to keep Georgie from taking her place in Miranda's life. But will her plan work before Miranda's big birthday party? Eyre's laugh-out-loud debut novel captures the discovery of the opposite sex in a fun and realistic way, while Santoso's black-and-white artwork brings the personalities of the characters to life. Fans of Junie B. Jones will love the adventures of this heroine as they become engaged in this early chapter book.—Annette Herbert, F. E. Smith Elementary School, Cortland, NY

A cute chapter book that manages to pack in kid humor and some real (though gentle) themes of pet loss and friendship negotiation while not being condescending. It's hard to write a chapter book that sounds authentic, and Eyre pulled it off.

Kids will relate to Sylvie's worries and self-doubts By Janet Hamilton Summary: Sylvie and Miranda have been best friends just about their whole lives. But now a new boy in the neighborhood, Georgie, is becoming friends with Miranda, and Sylvie is worried that she’s losing her friend. She decides that Miranda’s upcoming birthday party is her chance to prove what a good friend she is by giving the most spectacular present she can find. Her misguided attempts result in a stolen ferret, a twisted ankle, and an enormous cardboard castle covered with glitter glue. Will Miranda appreciate Sylvie’s efforts, or is their friendship doomed to come to an end? Grades 2-4.Pros: Sylvie is a likable character with worries and self-doubts that many kids will relate to. Her clumsy but heartfelt efforts at friendship will engage beginning chapter book readers.Cons: The stolen ferret storyline made me anxious.

A book that rises above the dreck By NCTH There is so much dreck out there for children--much of it well-intentioned, but misguided by the overzealous application of those intentions. Eyre's debut chapter book for middle-graders accomplishes its goal, stretching a child's notion of friendship without putting readers on the rack. The author uses an equally light touch on such perennial issues as challenging parental authority, dealing with the death of a pet, and confessing to misdemeanors. Funny but unforced, clever, and uncloying, The Best Friend Battle is a book I can recommend to my grandchildren and other young friends without reservation.
