Read Ebook American Judicial Process: Myth and Reality in Law and Courts, by Pamela C. Corley, Artemus Ward, Wendy L. Martinek

This text is a general introduction to American judicial process. The authors cover the major institutions, actors, and processes that comprise the U.S. legal system, viewed from a political science perspective. Grounding their presentation in empirical social science terms, the authors identify popular myths about the structure and processes of American law and courts and then contrast those myths with what really takes place. Three unique elements of this "myth versus reality" framework are incorporated into each of the topical chapters:

1) "Myth versus Reality" boxes that lay out the topics each chapter covers, using the myths about each topic contrasted with the corresponding realities.

2) "Pop Culture" boxes that provide students with popular examples from film, television, and music that tie-in to chapter topics and engage student interest.

3) "How Do We Know?" boxes that discuss the methods of social scientific inquiry and debunk common myths about the judiciary and legal system.

Unlike other textbooks, American Judicial Process emphasizes how pop culture portrays―and often distorts―the judicial process and how social science research is brought to bear to provide an accurate picture of law and courts. In addition, a rich companion website will include PowerPoint lectures, suggested topics for papers and projects, a test bank of objective questions for use by instructors, and downloadable artwork from the book. Students will have access to annotated web links and videos, flash cards of key terms, and a glossary.

American Judicial Process: Myth and Reality in Law and Courts, by Pamela C. Corley, Artemus Ward, Wendy L. Martinek

Review

"This superb volume successfully blends coverage of the judicial process with social scientific research on the legal system and insights into how legal actors are viewed in popular culture. This is no easy feat and I am confident that both students and professors will find this a most welcome and exciting approach."―Paul M. Collins, Jr., University of Massachusetts, Amherst"American Judicial Process is a game changer. Instead of relegating empirical evidence to the footnotes, this book challenges students to consider how we know what we know. The political science is front and center, but the masterful integration of examples from popular culture makes this anything but a dull read. Corley, Martinek, and Ward are a dream team for this kind of project. They have struck the perfect balance between wit and wisdom. This book challenges the popular conception of the American system of law and courts with a balanced―but never boring―reality check."―Rebecca D. Gill, University of Nevada, Las Vegas"One of my biggest challenges as a teacher is finding a text that can engage students without sacrificing intellectual rigor or content. American Judicial Process threads that needle in a way no existing text does. This is a superb text that fills an important gap on the judicial bookshelf."―Ryan C. Black, Michigan State University"Written by three highly-respected law and courts scholars, American Judicial Process combines a rigorous focus on substantive material with a host of features that enhance its relevance to students. It also presents important findings from social science research in a straightforward and accessible way. I have been waiting for a judicial process book like this for a long time."―Brett Curry, Georgia Southern University"Corley, Ward, and Martinek provide an in-depth account of the American judicial process that often challenges existing understandings. Exceptionally well-written and grounded in current social science scholarship, the authors effectively use a variety of pedagogical tools. As someone who has taught undergraduates for over twenty years, I am excited about using this text in my judicial process class."―Susan B. Haire, University of Georgia

If you haven't read any, leave this review and immediately order "Honus and Me." Eleven orders later you'll be back to this book. Still here? Okay, the setup is that a thirteen-year old kid, Joe Stoshak, known affectionately as Stosh, can use baseball cards to travel in time. These books teach a lot about baseball, and about life. This twelfth and final entry in the series keeps more to life than baseball, although you'll learn some baseball stuff, too. In fact, you'll meet all of the cool players that Stosh meets over the course of the series, but you won't get to know any of them the way you will when you actually read the books. So, once again, go start reading the series already! If you have read the series, then I know that you're just checking to get a hint of how great this book really is. Okay, this book really is really great, and you should buy it forthwith.

Buchert This is the last book in the "_______ & Me" sports series by Dan Gutman. My son was super excited that they came out with a new one this year! This is seriously thee only book series that my son will even attempt to read. He has been reading these books for the last 2 and 1/2 years! He is now 15 and is sitting on his bed reading this right now! I really hope that Dan Gutman writes some more sport series books that will keep my son reading.

You will FEEL Eldritch City By laurathomas61 This was a really quick read but so much fun.I’m always amazed when a short story has so much going on.The city of Eldritch has an atmosphere about it. Like a pall that is felt strongly by newcomers while residents have become accustomed to it. It sticks to you like humidity on a hot sultry day.A stranger enters the police station, exhibiting all of the signs of the Eldritch City air. He looks uncomfortable in his own skin. Deputy Swanson came from the Heartbrook Sheriff’s Office to see the officer who handled an old murder case. The case involves the murders of Mr. Phillips and his daughter nine years ago. The suspect list is small. Just the surviving wife and young son. But the deaths were so bizarre. The corpses looked like they’d been chewed on and the case remained open. The widows account of a strange creature bursting from the ground and killing her family leaves the investigating officer skeptical but the case haunts him.I was skeptical myself as to whether there really was a monster. But then how do you explain the signs of chewing? And that the wife and son told the same story?A new light is shone on the old case when the widow, released after nine years in a sanitarium, commits suicide and her son, the other survivor, disappears after having visited her.The two officers return to the crime scene and that’s where the truth reveals itself.Of course they venture out there at night. It wouldn’t be right if they went out there during the day.I liked how the author gave the town an oppressing atmosphere. It lent to the eeriness of the events and built on the suspense.Character development was good too. Even with the main character and narrator never revealing his name, I could almost picture what he looked like and while I didn’t hear from some of the others, their stories made them come to life. There is another short story in this series and more to come. If I’m not mistaken, they are all stand alone and can be read in any order. Not sure, but that’s how it sounds to me. I’d like to read all of them. The plot is somewhat predictable and not super scary, but I love these types of stories and my imagination ran wild. Another thing, the cover art graphics are awesome.I received this book for my honest review.

The author builds up an eerie feeling while slowly giving the reader glimpses into the dramatic events. Excellent short from an inexperienced author -- well worth the read!

The State Welfare Department decides to propose legislation to regulate Church Child Care Ministries. However, they need a small, obscure church in a rural county to use as a test case for abuse in these unregistered centers. The pastor of a Bible church in Montgomery County is selected as the prime target for the welfare officials. A reluctant prosecutor is forced to prosecute the pastor for abuse. However, no one counted on this pastor understanding law and his rights. Judge Randall Jones and his family find themselves in a political fight for his own reputation as he realizes that his own party leaders conspire to deny him the Judiciary Committee votes to become the next Indiana Supreme Court Justice. Judge Jones’ legal assistant, Laura Stiley, and his son, Randy, assist the Associate Pastor of the church to find a way to free the pastor and turn the tables on the welfare system. Into the mix comes another way to “fix” the situation. The Northern Ohio Christian Militia decides paramilitary force can put fear into county officials with the threat of weapons.

Gripping, well-written and relevant By Jason Burton In this tremendous adventure, Dr. Ben Townsend has brought the realities of being strong in God's might to life. Have you ever wondered if your pastor would stand up against a bully bureaucracy? Have you ever pondered what authority the government ought to have over the church?Have you ever wondered what you would do if you were falsely accused of the most awful crimes? These issues are dealt with and more. I very rarely recommend a book without reservation, but I simply could not put this down until I finished it! "The Powers That Be!" is a riveting legal thriller that is fun for the whole family to read and provides the proper perspective regarding standing up for one's rights. This Christian novel will be a favorite of mine for years to come.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Stunning page turner. By Eddie Gazell As anticipated the latest novel by Dr. Townsend is a thoroughly researched, cleverly plotted and endearingly presented to his readers. BRAVO. A must read!!! GOD is real to all through JESUS.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Pastor Mike Hoover By Michael K. Hoover The Issue of The Lordship of Jesus Christ over His Church is of the utmost importance today. Romans chapter 13 has been reduced to a message of meek submission to any civil authority. Pastors are more interested in their 501c3 "perks" and societal acceptance than they are concerned with what God says.Pastor Townsend has given us the true teachings of Scripture along these lines. Riveting read. I cannot recommend this book enough. I look forward to the sequel. Readers, this one is a keeper!

By Millicent Yeo This excellent story had even me (the mum) guessing how Baby Bear and Papa Bear were going to make a cake (with milk, flour and eggs) at the beach! Mr Asch has really written a wonderful story that's full of warmth, imagination and originality. My two year old insists that I read it to her at least three times every night. She also loves looking out for little details in the pictures. A month has gone by and she is still excited by it!

I will just add that Sand Cake is not just my favorite children's book -- I'm 53 years old -- but my favorite book, period! (My second-favorite is Sweet Thursday, the sequel to Steinbeck's Cannery Row.) Sand Cake is a short sonata in words and pictures.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. old time favorite never disappoints By Southern Mama I had this book as a child and wanted a copy for my kids. It is about a bear family that goes to the beach. The baby bear says he wants to make a cake. The father shows him how using his imagination (drawing ingredients in the sand and adding them to a bucket). They "bake" the cake in a pretend oven and baby bear "eats" it by drawing a picture of himself around the cake ("See, it is in my tummy!"). Kids like to reinact this story at the beach. Very creative concept.

What is your favorite thing to do in the whole world? Whatever it is, odds are that you don’t like doing it as much as the elephant in this book enjoys smashing small cars. He’ll smash any small car that drives down his road. He smashes yellow cars, he smashes blue cars, he smashes red cars, all the while singing a special car-smashing song. Then one day a man comes to town and opens a small-car store right on the elephant’s road. You can probably guess what the elephant does next, but the real fun starts when the man turns the tables on the elephant—and his plan is a smashing success.  Jean Merrill’s story of gleeful destruction, revenge, and conciliation is accompanied by Ronni Solbert’s colorful crayon drawings. Rarely has property damage looked so adorable.

The Elephant Who Liked to Smash Small Cars, by Jean Merrill

Review "This bare-bones story is as mischievous and subversive as all get-out, and it makes me laugh. It’s just what the title tells you: An elephant, who is way into the destruction of public property, learns his lesson when he meets a car salesman who won’t put up with it. The spare crayon drawings and make-no-apologies story of destruction (what toddler doesn’t like to smash things?) is unlike anything else you’ll see this year, most likely—and was quite possibly unlike anything else seen back in 1964." —Julie Danielson, Kirkus"What is wonderful about this reissue – the book was first published nearly 50 years ago – is that it plays along merrily with a child’s need to smash, squash and exterminate.” —The Guardian “From bubble wrap to bugs, the urge to smash and smush seems to be a part of the human condition. Just think of that group of four-year-olds building towers of blocks and then merrily knocking them down. Or those older kids bashing into each other during recess. Here’s a wonderfully subversive little book that captures the joy of that impulse and highlights the results. A perfect read aloud for all ages.” —Monica Edinger, author of Africa Is My Home and proprietor of the blog Educating Alice "The greatest title in the history of book selling. Plus: a song." —Tom Nissley, owner of Phinney Books, Seattle

Thirty years ago it was one of my son's favorite library books By Kindle Customer This one seems to offend modern sensibilities, but it was written 50 years ago. Thirty years ago it was one of my son's favorite library books, although I couldn't say why. He was four years old. Whether it was the inherent violence that appealed to the young caveman in him, the fact the bad elephant got retribution in the end, or something else entirely I will never know. I purchased a copy of the new edition and had my now 31 year old "boy" read it. He doesn't remember it at all, has no idea why he liked it, but admits he can see where he would have enjoyed it immensely. Go ahead, modern parents. Your children have enough of a grasp of reality to handle it. They won't run out and start hitting your elephant with toy cars. If they do, you have more problems than can be addressed in an Amazon review.

I "discovered" it on the discards table at my library. Intrigued by the rather lengthy title (which is an apropos summary of the story), I read the book on the spot and wouldn't let anyone else touch it! Delighted, I shared it with my co-workers, who thought it equally as delightful and tried to get me to part with it. Combine simplistic illustrations, a silly story, with a hint of a plot twist and you've got this zany yet charming story that will tickle funny bones of kids no matter their age!

I don't think they write childrens' books like this anymore because our society has become so oversensitive about such issues as "animal abuse" and "corporeal punishment". This naughty elephant never hurts the small cars again because he is punished with big cars and doesn't want to get hurt again himself. Very cute illustrations!

Once Upon a Cloud, by Claire Keane

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—Disney animation artist Keane delivers her picture book debut with a cartoon fantasy awash in mostly pink and purple pastels . At bedtime, ethereal dreams take over Celeste's ponderings on the ideal gift for her mother. The wind carries her into the sky to star princesses and a castle. The moon tells her stories, and then the sun princess greets her at dawn with a cup of tea. The next morning, inspired by her travels, Celeste gathers flowers that sparkle like stars and blossoms that glow like the moon, then ties them with a red hair ribbon, to provide her mother the perfect present. VERDICT Fairy fans will be pleased with this modest tale.—Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA

We read much more complex books. But this one... I think the pictures are beautiful, we love reading it together. We love the nuance (look, a castle! and it took us a while to figure out that the circle of "women" represented the stars...). It's a simple (in words) but beautiful in pictures book. I also find it very calming. The picture on the last page, of the little girl and her mom is just filled with emotion. So, we like it. :-)

We both loved it! The whimsical drawings really capture the imagination, my daughter was pointing at everything and saying "look at that!" and I would ask her "what is it?" and she would tell me a whole story about what was going on. Just lovely.

Read Ebook The Luck Uglies, by Paul Durham

The first in a series with the makings of a modern classic, The Luck Uglies is an irresistible cross between Joseph Delaney's The Last Apprentice and Chris Colfer's Land of Stories series, overflowing with adventure, secrets, friendship, and magic.

Rye O'Chanter has seen a lot of strange things happen in Village Drowning: children are chased through the streets. Families are fined for breaking laws that don't even exist. Girls aren't allowed to read anymore, and certain books—books that hold secrets about Drowning's past—have been outlawed altogether.

Now a terrifying encounter has eleven-year-old Rye convinced that the monstrous, supposedly extinct Bog Noblins have returned. Before the monsters disappeared, there was only one way to defeat them—the Luck Uglies. But the Luck Uglies have long since been exiled, and there's nobody left who can protect the village.

As Rye dives into Drowning's maze of secrets, rules, and lies, she begins to question everything she's been told about the village's legend of outlaws and beasts . . . and what she'll discover is that it may take a villain to save them from the monsters.

This critically acclaimed debut middle grade novel was named an ALA Notable Book and a New York Public Library Title for Reading and Sharing and won the Cybil Award for Middle Grade Speculative Fiction.

The Luck Uglies, by Paul Durham

From School Library Journal Gr 5–7—Eleven-year-old Rye and her best friends, Quinn and Folly, are curious about their town and its history. What really lies beyond Village Drowning's walls in the area known as Beyond the Shale? Do the huge, ravenous monsters known as Bog Noblins actually exist? Are there still avengers known as Luck Uglies? The trio tries to find answers in Tam's Tome, a book banned by the Earl. In their quest for knowledge, the children become accidental thieves and must escape from the Angry Poet. Together with help from her friends, Rye uncovers the village's secrets (and those within her own family), including an underground maze that leads from one end of the village to the other. Confrontations with Bog Noblins bring back the banished and much maligned Luck Uglies to defeat the evil creatures and return justice to Drowning. Rye learns that things aren't always as they seem and that people are not all good or bad but often somewhere in between. Nonstop action makes for a rollicking good tale set in a medieval-like place and period. The fast plot is enhanced by humor, likable characters—including some adults—undiluted heroism, frightful Bog Noblins, and a despicable Earl. Altogether, this is a fast, fresh, and engaging adventure sure to delight readers on several levels.—Maria B. Salvadore, formerly at District of Columbia Public Library

From Booklist *Starred Review* Debut author Durham kick-starts his fantasy adventure trilogy with this cracker of an introduction. Rye O’Chanter—11 years old, unbelievably brave, and jaw-droppingly reckless—lives with her widowed mother and toddler sister in Village Drowning. The village is under the thumb of the ruthless and self-absorbed Earl Longchance. Years ago the village was terrorized by Bog Noblins, and Longchance claims the credit for driving them away. But legend says that honor goes to the Luck Uglies, a secret (some would even say criminal) society now banished and lost. When a supposedly extinct Bog Noblin turns up in the village, a power struggle ensues between Longchance and a man called Harmless, who holds the secret to the fate of the Luck Uglies. How Rye fits into all this is part of the drama and a lot of the excitement. Durham has created an impressively tactile world peopled with fully realized characters. His writing is strong and balanced, by turns funny and heart-stopping. There are no lulls in the story, which incorporates, in a completely original way, elements that will be familiar to fans of the genre. Antonsson’s chapter-opening sketches further light the way. Readers will be sorry to see this bona fide page-turner end, at least until the next volume. Grades 4-7. --Kara Dean

A fast, fresh, and engaging adventure sure to delight readers on several levels.” (School Library Journal)“Funny, magical, and absolutely crackling with those little sparks that make a book wonderful. It’s an action-packed adventure with heroes you’ll root for and baddies you’ll hiss at, all set in a land that I, for one, would love to visit again.” (Stefan Bachmann, author of The Peculiar and The Whatnot)“Paul Durham has created the best kind of fantasy world—one that is equal parts wondrous and deadly, and in which the line between heroism and villainy is deliciously blurred.” (Christopher Healy, author of The Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom)“Midnight adventures, smart humor, a richly imagined otherworld, and winsome characters—The Luck Uglies has the perfect ingredients for a spell-binding read. Mystery, Adventure, and Monster Thrills By Annette Lamb THE LUCK UGLIES by Paul Durham is one of the books you may have missed earlier in the year with the spring flood of new offerings. With the second book in this popular new middle-grade fantasy adventure trilogy coming out in March 2015, it’s time to catch up!With elements of mystery, adventure, and monster thrills, tweens will quickly become absorbed in this fantasy world set in a medieval-style village. Both boys and girls alike will enjoy the intelligent writing and engaging characters. The short chapters move quickly as the story builds to an exciting climax that involves intriguing monsters and a mysterious secret society. Not your typical “good vs evil” storyline, this book will appeal to young readers who are beginning to explore the layers of life, power of secrets and fear, and the fine line between hero and villain.Fans of Holly Black, Rick Riordan, and Brandon Mull will all enjoy this fantasy trilogy. To learn more about the author, go to http://www.pauldurhambooks.com/.Check out the book trailer at http://youtu.be/vTEUX8JzRhc.

We have secrets, the opposition of mostly good and mostly evil, twisty developments and a smart, reckless heroine smack in the middle. It is more advanced than a "find the magical object" quest adventure, but not bogged down by excessive court intrigue or over-fussy world building. Our heroine and her pals are well rounded, distinct, and brimming with appeal and personality. Matters of good and evil are given a light edge of grey to get the reader thinking. Injustice, though, when encountered, is stark, and good will ultimately prevail. In the meantime, though, there are secrets to be uncovered, adventures to be had, and threats to be surmounted. We have an interesting and comfortable medieval-ish world and a manageable landscape. There is a fine selection of secondary characters, and each is given a bit of something memorable to say, do or be. Mercifully, there are adults who are honest and dependable, so this is not one of those children's adventures in which all of the adults are unaccountably dopes.Action is mixed with humor is mixed with intrigue is mixed with suspense, so the reader's attention is always held. The storytelling is punchy enough that we don't have to wade through yards of exposition, but not so cryptic or episodic that the reader gets lost. The upshot is we have a fine and engaging fantastical adventure for an independent reader ready to step up a bit, and we have a fine and determined heroine leading the way. That's a nice find. Please note that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful, original, exciting tale! By R. S. Redding I loved this book! Read it in one night...and wow, am I tired. I loved the originality. The author didn't stick with the traditional fairies and wizards. I enjoyed reading further and further to find out just who exactly the Luck Uglies were. Good or bad? Right or wrong? Somewhere in between maybe? There was a bit of a drawn out bit when everyone was attacking everyone (I won't go into more detail, I don't want to spoil the story for you!), but that soon passed when all the explanations finally came. The ending was mildly mysterious, so I am hoping there will be more Luck Ugly stories to come. And last, but certainly not least, the art was beautiful at the beginning of each chapter. It captured almost exactly what was in my mind's eye, and when it didn't, it gave me a different perspective on how others pictured the characters and scenarios. I hope to find more of his art in other books to come. All in all, a great read for anyone 10-100 years old who enjoys fantasy books.

By Meredith Cute book that both my 3 & 5 yr. old were thrilled to get a pre-release copy of! Released 3/31 and would be the perfect Easter basket stuff for a little one learning-to-read in your house. Exactly on my son's level and he thinks it's so fun!

My 5 year old daughter picked this out with her own money earned from a lemonade stand. She loves the TV show Sheriff Callie on Disney Junior, and has stuffed animals of every character, including the loveable Sheriff Callie and her sidekick Peck, as well as her trusty horse. We have several of the Sheriff Callie early reader books, but this one is excellent because she is able to read it on her own.Other World of Reading Pre-1 books include pictures for some of the words, which is great for pre-readers, but since she is starting to read well, especially short vowel sounds and familiar character names, I like this book for her because there are actual words, and most she was able to read on her own. The words are repetitive and most are short vowel sounds that are simple to read. The story line is straight out of one of the TV episodes where Peck, the goofy sidekick to Sheriff Callie has a bag of trail mix and notices that it is mostly gone. Being the Barney Fife (for those parents out there who know about the Andy Griffith show) and being the awkward one who thinks everything is going wrong, he attempts to catch the thief of his trail mix, only to realize (SPOILER) that there was a hole in the bag the whole time, and there was no thief.Callie and friends are enjoyable as always in this wonderful kids' storybook. Your child will enjoy reading it himself or herself, and he or she will also enjoy you reading it as well.

By Charlene Y Fisher My 2 yr old granddaughter LOVES Sheriff Callie coloring books and other items that are hard to find. I was so happy to find this for her and other books so I ordered several. Easy for little hands to open and look at the pages and pictures and fun to read. The pictures hold the interest of little ones who cannot read yet and the characters are cute. I would highly recommend Sheriff Callie series for anyone who loves animals and cute stories. Good for younger kids.

  • The Supreme Court ruled that PPACA subsidies can be paid to taxpayers whether they purchase coverage on a state Exchange or the federal Exchange (in states that have not created an Exchange of their own): King v. Burwell, No. 14-114 (U.S. June 25, 2015)
  • Extensive litigation continued on contraceptive mandate, and what religious organizations must do to vindicate their objection to providing contraceptive coverage
  • The Supreme Court ruled that all of the states must recognize same-sex marriage, because the right to marriage equality is of constitutional dimensions: Obergefell v. Hodges, No. 14-556 (U.S. June 26, 2015)

43 of 50 people found the following review helpful. Shilling's Text is Jam Packed By A Customer I am using this book for a master's level personnel law course. It covers all the topics quite thoroughly. It might be useful as a quick selective reference tool for HR administrators unfamiliar with one or more of the specialty areas. Some chapters (such as the one on benefits and the one on pensions) might benefit from another look at organization of the material. However, most of the information is accurate, if necessarily streamlined in many areas. Since personnel law now covers several deeply specialized areas, this is not surprising.Stylistically, the book's sentences are jam-packed with information. This might prove difficult reading for some. In a few cases, a series of issues will be "hidden" by a single sentence that is oversimplified, but this is apparent only to a reader who is familiar with the field. The advantage is that the author has made a very creditable attempt to address all the issues. The author generally avoids drawing temporal or one-sided conclusions, which may mislead in a field that is fraught with disputes. I appreciate the even-handedness of this approach. One small but annoying detail. On page 220 is a reference to a "rabbi trust". I took offense at the use of this term in the book, without quotation marks. I think later editions should avoid or explain the use of language which is apparently bigoted. In fact, I will recommend that my students not use this term because I can offer no good explanation for its continuance.

Invaluable Reference Guide for Human Resources Personnel By Bryan Carey Human Resource managers and specialists have a lot of legal material to learn. They have to keep up with the latest changes in the laws that affect the way they handle employees and the way they administer benefits. This guide, updated each year since its initial release, is designed to help human resource personnel find the answers to legal questions. The most striking feature of this guide is its length. It is more than 1,100 pages long and contains 43 chapters. It needs to be this way, of course, to encompass all of the different laws pertaining to human resource management. It covers most everything about HR one can imagine, from rules and regulations regarding hiring and terminating to laws covering sexual harassment and pension administration.Even though this book is a very good resource, there are still a few things you will not be able to find. The primary function of this reference guide is to provide an overview of the federal laws. Thus, many of the laws unique to the individual states are not discussed here. There are a few exceptions, but there are many state- specific questions this guide will not be able to answer. This is what happened to me one day when I consulted this book for an answer regarding workmen's compensation. It didn't have what I needed to know about my state, so I had to look elsewhere. Still, it pointed me in the right direction so it did have its use.The organization of this book is ok, but some things about it are a little cumbersome. The table of contents, for example, doesn't include page numbers. Instead, it references the various pages based on the chapter number and the subsection (for example, "23.02" means turn to chapter 23, and then look for the second section). I think it would be better if it showed the page number. There are plenty of references in this guide to specific court cases, pointing out new decisions and how they were decided. Human Resource laws change all the time, which is why a book like this becomes outdated quickly. Fortunately, the author of this handy guide updates it every year with a new release. It's a large, bulky book that may not be organized in the most efficient way, but is still invaluable as reference guide for HR personnel.

However, this one is excellent. If you are unfamiliar with a topic, or need to brush up, you can use this before going on to other resources. She does a fine job presenting the information in a readable, concise, and (as far as I can tell) accurate format. Not the replacement for a barrister, but helps you get prepared to ask the right questions.

Jenny is a gentle bundle of contradictions. She wants to be left alone, but she cries when her mom goes away. She wants to wear her old T-shirt instead of her new dress, and that’s that. If you catch her smiling, she’ll go back to grumbling. Jenny wants things her way, but she’s not always sure what her way is. It might seem like she’s being difficult, but she can’t help it—it’s just how she feels. This delightful small-format picture book is a portrait of a character who, despite her grumbling and frustrations, just wants to be loved. Against simple backgrounds and understated digital and chalk pastel illustrations, Jenny’s boldly expressive face is the focal point. The book conveys a quiet balance of humor and strife, perfectly portraying a prickly kid who feels anxious, stubborn and unheard . . . even though she’s not exactly sure what she has to say.

Prickly Jenny, by Sibylle Delacroix

From School Library Journal PreS—Jenny faces a familiar problem for toddlers (and older people): she doesn't know what she wants and is feeling out of sorts. Jenny doesn't want to wear her new dress, she doesn't want to go to the fair, and she doesn't want ice cream—although she still devours it. An unbleached backdrop reflects Jenny's foul mood and makes her pale figure the irresistible focal point. Delacroix's uncluttered charcoal sketches with their limited palette have a sweet, comforting quality, even as they effectively express the child's scowling ill temper and failed attempts to exert control over her domain. The economical text is accessible for its toddler audience while retaining humorous nuances. As the author concludes, "Jenny doesn't know what she wants today. But tomorrow, when she's bigger, it will get better." VERDICT Both children and adults will find this picture book relatable and reassuring.—Rachel Anne Mencke, St. Matthew's Parish School, Pacific Palisades, CA

There is the general idea in society that children should be happy most of the time, and that is just not how all of them, or all of us, feel! As a preschool teacher, I have met my share of "prickly" youngsters, and they are not "brats" or bad kids. They are just a little more complex, but need to be loved just like anyone. This book tells a simple story of such a person, with sympathy and without judgement. I highly recommend it for educators of young children and parents of all children.

My daughter loves books and typically wants them read over and over. She just looked at me at the end of this book, I think she was waiting for there to be a point.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Children are allowed to have a range of emotions outside of happy By Blue Skies I searched this book to add it to my wish list of books for my girls. We have it checked out from the library and my daughters LOVE it. I checked it out specifically for my oldest (3.5) who has always been a bit...prickly. She does not like too much physical touch and is laser specific. What's funny is that my 20-month-old adores this book, too. She makes us read it over and over and over.I was sad to see the one-star review. I feel like this book is excellent for showing children that they are ALLOWED a wide range of emotions and don't have to be tap-dance happy every waking moment. They are, after all, their own people and not reflections of us, the parents.
