A dark, fantastical, multigenerational tale about a family whose patriarch is consumed by the hunt for the mythical, elusive Sasquatch he encountered in his youth. Eli Roebuck was nine years old when his mother walked off into the woods with "Mr. Krantz", a large, strange, hairy man who may or may not have been a Sasquatch. What Eli knows for certain is that his mother went willingly, leaving her only son behind. For the rest of his life, Eli is obsessed with the hunt for the bizarre creature his mother chose over him, and we watch it affect every relationship he has in his long life - with his father, with both of his wives, his children, grandchildren, and colleagues. We follow all of the Roebuck family members, witnessing through each of them the painful, isolating effects of Eli's maniacal hunt, and find that each Roebuck is battling a monster of his or her own, sometimes literally.

The magical world Shields has created is one of unicorns and lake monsters, ghosts and reincarnations, tricksters and hexes. At times charming, as when young Eli meets the eccentric, extraordinary Mr. Krantz, and downright horrifying at others, The Sasquatch Hunter's Almanac is boldly imaginative throughout and proves to be a devastatingly real portrait of the demons that we as human beings all face.

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Strangely Compelling..... By Daniel V. Reilly I'm not generally a fan of the sub-genre of "Magic Realism".....In fact, just the term "Magic Realism" is enough to turn me right off from any book that I see it applied to. So I headed into Sharma Shields' THE SASQUATCH HUNTER'S ALMANAC with a healthy dose of trepidation, which was lessened only by my love of all things Cryptozoological. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I may even go past enjoyment and say that I loved it. Shields tells a multigenerational story that is propelled along by the obsession of Eli Roebuck, a man who is consumed with proving that Bigfoot exists. The book opens up in 1943, when young Eli's mother brings home a strange-looking, shabbily-dressed stranger who she introduces to Eli as "Mr. Krantz". After a bizarre afternoon spent with this most unusual guest, Eli's mother accompanies Mr. Krantz into the woods, disappearing from young Eli's life forever. Returning home to find his wife gone, Eli's pragmatic father does his best to raise his son alone, never knowing that Eli suspects that Mr. Krantz was, in fact, a Sasquatch. Eli grows up to become a respected Podiatrist, but never lets go of his obsession with discovering proof of Bigfoot's existence, founding a Cryptozoological organization and writing books to aid in his ultimate quest, which is to find and kill the creature that took his mother away from him. Shields tells the story of Eli and his family through brief vignettes that read almost like short, feverish horror stories. Each member of Eli's family, his father, his wives, his daughters, even his mother, is ultimately haunted by a strange creature of their own, resulting in episodes that range from darkly comic to positively horrific. Even Mr. Krantz himself is not immune from the obsessions and manias that plague Eli's extended family. One of the major hurdles that I had to overcome reading this book was Shields' depiction of Bigfoot (Mr. Krantz) as wearing clothes and living a semi-civilized life. (As the novel progresses, Mr. Krantz actually moves into a condo....) i found this to be ridiculous at first, but as the novel went on, I was able to just accept it and run with it, and by the end, it all fit perfectly. Shields has crafted a strange, hallucinatory world inhabited by flawed, obsessed people who all ring completely true. As out-there and bizarre as they may act, they all feel totally human.Even the mysterious Mr. Krantz.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The Sasquatch Hunter's Almanac By Brendan Moody Sharma Shields' first novel is an addition to an increasingly prominent subgenre: the literary novel in which mild fantastic elements function largely as metaphors for the mysteries and ambiguities of the human condition. At its center is Eli Roebuck, whose mother abandoned her family in 1943 to run off with Mr. Krantz, who might be a very hairy man and might be a sasquatch. Eli's obsession with Krantz becomes an obsession with the possibly-mythical beasts in general, and this vocation shapes his life and the lives of his family, who sometimes encounter inexplicable things themselves, over the course of the next 60 years. The dynamics explored are sometimes too familiar-- every unhappy family is different, yes, but they're not always different enough-- and readers who have a lot of experience with this type of novel will not be surprised by the metaphors involved. But the prose is quietly elegant, and achieves at its best a delicate eerieness tinged with melancholy. Shields' characters are never mere types, and she inhabits their conflicting perspectives on each other without putting her thumb on the scale or offering easy answers. There's a recognition here that the common psychological explanations of human behavior fall short not so much because they're inaccurate as because they're insufficient: cod-Freudian cycles of drama are only the beginning of our strangeness. The Sasquatch Hunter's Almanac is a graceful debut by a writer with great potential.

In doing either, do we accept ourselves or are we dissatisfied with our life and the path we have chosen? Do we have the courage to follow our own goals and desires with no regrets or second-guessing of our choices? "The Sasquatch Hunter's Almanac", while facially a story of one man's life - incorporating fantasy or delusion as a more "rational" individual may term it - addresses these questions. Sharma Shields allows the reader to consider the different options and reach a personal conclusion with regard the answers."The Sasquatch Hunter's Almanac" follows Eli Roebuck from 1943 when he meets Mr. Krantz through 2006 and Eli's death. Mr. Krantz is unlike anyone Eli has ever met - "...Eli found [his] unpredictability the most alluring trait..." and "...Mr Krantz put Eli's dad to shame ... and in the category of "Having Fun" [too]..." Conflicted by his admiration of Mr. Krantz and of his observations about his father, the young Eli thinks "...when his dad wasn't working, he was home... And those ... were the best times..." When Eli's mother abandons her family, the resulting emotional damage and its impact on Eli's future relationships generates the remainder of the novel's action and themes.Sharma Shields has presented a novel of psychologically fragile or emotionally damaged individuals. Relationships with others will be affected by these issues and will influence responses and interactions throughout the novel. For example, Eli's father Greg thinks "...to actually love, to love enough to commit to unhappiness... that was real love..." In contemplating her relationship with an older man, Eli's daughter Amelia thinks "...we all lie to seem better, cooler, tougher... I like it... I like how vulnerable it makes them..." Even Eli will come to a startling realization "...no matter ... he was stuck with his past. It was unchangeable. There was no panacea for those memories..." Eli's mother Agnes is the individual who is most honest with herself about her flaws and her mistakes, and in accepting who she is. "...Fault was useless... Life spiraled out from life and death... It was random ...constant. It was faultless and unapologetic and real..."Conservative readers should be aware that there is some profanity and some instances in which physical functions or anatomy are discussed. These things are not extraneous or written about for their shock value, but are an integral part of the novel.Individuals who choose to read "The Sasquatch Hunter's Almanac" will find it an unusual, fascinating novel. It combines fantasy, mysticism, and the supernatural with an interesting concept and a nuanced, insightful treatment of psychological and emotional issues.

The Glorkian Warrior Eats Adventure Pie, by James Kochalka

From School Library Journal Gr 3–7—In this sequel to The Glorkian Warrior (First Second, 2014), the title character and his trusty backpack deal with a space snake, a nemesis by the name of Buster, an alien baby eating the Glorkian's brain, and a lack of energy crackers. In other words, a normal day in the life of the Glorkian Warrior. After having his brain sucked out, the protagonist explains, "Who cares if my brain is stupid? If I ever needed to think of an idea, I'd just ask my elbow." Add a good dose of rivalry and some excellent potty humor, and readers have a great sequel with a side of adventure pie. The bright colors and huge panels make this an ideal read for beginners to graphic novels. The simple drawings lend themselves well to the action depicted, and though it looks as if there may be too much going on in every panel, it flows quite nicely. VERDICT This second adventure of the Glorkian Warrior deserves a spot in most graphic novel collections, as long as kids can handle a tooting backpack.—Mariela Siegert, Westfield Middle School, Bloomingdale, IL

Review “Silliness reigns supreme as the Glorkian Warrior finds himself on another goofy illustrated adventure that revolves around food and fart jokes . . . Kooky, bubble-gum fun.” ―Kirkus Reviews

Not my slice of pie By AMW i've now read 3 of james kochalka's comic/books to my daughter and this is my least favorite. the Glorkian Delivers a Pizza is definitely better and introduces the characters in this story. my main issue with this book was that the 'villian' character and all his scenes involved heavy usage of the words 'stupid' and 'idiot'. i'm not a prude, we swear at our house, and i can handle one or both of those words being sprinkled into stories, but this just felt too mean to me. the dialogue always felt so harsh. the authors humor is definitely more sharp and clever in other stories, so i would recommend passing on this one, but please do try some of his other comics, particularly the Dragon Puncher series or Johnny Boo.

The Beginning of a great adventure you will never forget By carolyn Costello This book stands out above all the other Minecraft books, it is about a 4/2foot tall Enderling who gets bullied in terrible ways, and begins a journey to return him, his best friend, his bullies, and all the Endermen back to The End after a mean prank and finding Ender Pearls from his crush after she dies. I highly recommend this book for all ages.

”I told you, don’t call me Miss Kitty.” Harry Goldman, young genius, DNA researcher and still a nerd, is back, and this time he’s working for the law. At the end of Catnip, his girlfriend, Anastasia, devolved into a cat. He manages to bring her back to her half-human form, but no sooner does he do so than a new problem surfaces. Two other transgenics emerge, and they are out for blood. Harry and Anastasia have to face off against Lyudmila, another cat-girl, and Piotr, a half-rhino, half-boar monstrosity that lives to kill. And if that isn’t bad enough, the police, lynch mobs, and underground dwellers are after Harry and his girlfriend as well. With time running out, they embark on a treacherous journey to the Ukraine in order to solve the riddle of Anastasia’s DNA, a journey that could also cost both of them their lives.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. good reading By LAS Reviewer The problem with being a genius is that you end up with the toughest problems. If only Harry knew how to solve the ones he has.Last year I mentioned wanting to see more time spent developing Harry as a protagonist in my review of the previous book in this series. His backstory was full of painful experiences that were never really explored as potential explanations for why he behaved the way he did. I was pleased to see how these issues were addressed in the sequel. Harry still has a tendency to be a little pompous, but now I know exactly why he acts this way. That information made a big difference for this reader. There were many exciting things happening during the course of this plot. When the action sequences grew tense, though, I did notice a tendency for the narrator to slip into telling the audience what was happening instead of showing them. These scenes sometimes involved a lot of different things happening simultaneously. They might have been more effective if the events in them had been given more time to be explained fully. At times I felt as though I’d been given the highlights of those fights instead of all of the important details about them. One of the reasons why I like J.S. Frankel’s writing style so much is that he has cinematic approach to storytelling. The strong pacing and slowly building tension made me feel like I was watching an action movie. This is something I noticed in the first story in this series, but it was even stronger in this one. The plot development seemed to be just as important to the author as it was to create a visually enticing setting. I really enjoy it when stories pay an equal amount attention to what the characters are doing as to when and where they are doing it, so I will definitely be keeping an eye out for what he comes up with next. While it can be read on its own or out of order, I do recommend also checking out Catnip if you enjoy this sequel! There were a few references to previous events in this novel that will make more sense for readers who are already familiar with this universe.Rise of the Transgenics is a good choice for fans of the science fiction and young adult genres alike.originally posted at long and short reviews

I have become addicted to Catnip- Amazing series By Monsterella Reviews I find myself much like a cat as I read these stories by JS Frankel-getting a taste of Catnip and feigning for more! This being the second in the series it brings with it the struggles that Harry and Anastasia were facing in the first but evolves into so much more. Just like Harry. Anastasia's memory returns and we learn more about her former life. There are parts of Harry's and Anastasia's lives that have been glimpsed previously that are brought out in a while new light, making them even more amazing individuals. The journey of Harry and Anastasia keeps getting more and more interesting as they find themselves in new exciting and dangerous scenarios. They are still wanted so that is a demon that keeps coming at them from every angle possible from some rather interesting parties as well. The main objective is still to find a way for Anastasia to be comfortable with who she is so her and Harry can be more alike. Though this may seem simple it is no easy feat and may surprise you by how it actually comes about. They travel far and wide, on the surface and underneath to hide from those who seek to destroy them on their journey for answers and a cure. There are many who don't or won't listen, but the few that do take them in with such warmth that it relights the candle of humanity and brightens the inevitable cold darkness along the way.I absolutely loved this book and hope that there are more on the way!Favorite lines:"I don't need you or anyone else!"“Something little children dream of when they’re bad,” she answered. “I’m a nightmare, and I’m all yours.”"In his last moments of life, Nick wondered why he’d been chosen as some kind of sacrificial lamb, why no one would help him when he needed it most, and why life had to be so unfair..."“I know who I am. My name is Anastasia, my heritage is Russian, your name is HarryGoldman, and I love you.”"I guess being a circus sideshow attraction has its merits,"“My cat doesn’t like moronic dog owners. Keep on walking.”"Life continued on, and he and Anastasia had stayed in their semi-ivory tower. He sought counsel only from her and did for her, because that had become his mission in life, to restore what had been taken. Love also had a lot to do with it, and he worked diligently and tirelessly in his quest for knowledge."“You volunteered for this? Who’s your, uh, who created you?”“Clever as you think you are, aware though you may be, you are really in the dark and have always been there. You may think that you know everything, Harry Goldman, but you do not.”"No mental block is perfect, nor is it complete.""Their words hit home—no one cared, and if no one cared, then what was a person to do?""The only thing that remained is what she'd do in the future.""Not everyone was bad, there were many good people out there, and he’d just been fortunate enough to find them."“Welcome to my world.”“I guess...I guess the same thing that happened to me will happen to you...and you’ll live as you are—with me.”

By Aya Walksfar If you enjoy a good solid read with complex characters, good description, realistic dialogue and interesting subplots, Jesse Frankel ‘s Rise of the Transgenics, Catnip Book 2, will give you all of that plus a secondary female character who is strong and complex. The story arc is complete and doesn’t leave the reader hanging with a “to be continued,” yet it leads neatly into the setup for a third book.Harry Goldman is a likeable nerd with a genius IQ and a researcher in transgenics. Anastasia is his cat-girl girlfriend he is trying to help revert to human. While he is helping her, she isn’t shy about helping to keep him safe, especially since he may be a brain, but he isn’t the brawn. She has strength, agility, speed and all the right moves to put anyone down if she needs to.These two are thrown into some really tough situations, but they solve these situations by working together. I really liked that. Harry is shown as a boy with emotions and he shares those emotions with his girlfriend, just as she shares her emotions with him. They both struggle with Anastasia being different, being a cat-girl, yet neither one will abandon the other. Throughout this story, Harry and Anastasia “rescue” each other, both using their particular strengths and gifts. The peripheral characters were well done and fit into the story without a glitch. I especially adored Josephine, a feisty, differently-abled, old woman.I recommend this book with a solid 4 stars.

His assailant runs down the street, jumps into an SUV, and vanishes, hoping to join the scores of killers in American cities who are never arrested for their crimes. But as soon as the case is assigned to Detective John Skaggs, the odds shift. Here is the kaleidoscopic story of the quintessential, but mostly ignored, American murder—a “ghettoside” killing, one young black man slaying another—and a brilliant and driven cadre of detectives whose creed is to pursue justice for forgotten victims at all costs. Ghettoside is a fast-paced narrative of a devastating crime, an intimate portrait of detectives and a community bonded in tragedy, and a surprising new lens into the great subject of why murder happens in our cities—and how the epidemic of killings might yet be stopped. Ghettoside: A True Story of Murder in America, by Jill Leovy

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month for February 2015: There’s a statistic that surfaces early in Jill Leovy’s fundamentally important book Ghettoside that should catch your attention: black men compose about 6% of the country’s population, yet they are the victim in nearly 40% of homicides. And who’s killing those black men? The answer is most often other black men. Leovy, a writer for the Los Angeles Times, explores the culture of black violence, specifically in South Central LA, describing a world that seems to exist hermetically sealed off from the rest of the city. With nearly zero mobility and little policing, the people of South Central are left to fend for themselves—further amplifying the devastating drumbeat of gangs and violence. Leovy builds her book around one family’s story: Wally Tennelle, an LA cop, has refused to move his wife and kids out of his Watts neighborhood. Then his youngest son is murdered (unlike most murders in the area, this one was covered by the local media). Through the gathering of evidence, the roundup of suspects, and the trial that ultimately comes to be—all spearheaded by John Skaggs, a very dedicated and capable LA homicide detective—Leovy makes the argument that what places like South Central need is more policing, not less. They need more attention—not debate, finger pointing, and inaction. – Chris Schluep

An Important and Essential Book That Will Broaden Your Understanding By Lita Perna Gettoside was a word used to by a Watts gang member to describe his South Central Los Angeles neighborhood. The author writes that Gettoside is both a place and a predicament. It is a place where black boys and men are safer in jail than on the streets. Ghettoside is also a frame of mind. It is a place with a culture of violence where the heroes are seen as the villains; the villains are seen as the heroes and all the victims are seen by one detective as some father's child.By the time you finish this book you will know the heroes (detectives, including those whom the author calls ghettoside craftsmen whose involvement, dedication and self sacrifice is the stuff of which legends are made) and the victims (the focus here is on a good boy, the murdered 18 year old sheltered son of a homicide detective) and the addicts, the whores and the gangster-villains. You will better understand the police culture, and neighborhood culture and what they are all up against. You will understand why there are so many murders. This is more than a story about heroic and tenacious homicide detectives' almost impossible task of identifying, tracking down, arresting and aiding in the prosecution of the drive by shooter of an 18 year old boy; it is an illuminating history and an exploration of a culture of lawlessness and violence and the multigenerational tragedies of its victims.Author Jill Leovy, award winning reporter and editor for the Los Angeles gives startling and sickening statistics. She states that lawlessness is its own kind of order and where the criminal justice system fails to respond vigorously to violent injury and death, homicide becomes epidemic. "Wherever law is absent or undeveloped---wherever it is shabby, ineffective, or disputed---some form of self-policing or communal justice usually emerges." She says reformers focus on the rights of defendants while being blind to the under enforcement of violent crime. The author writes that police are preoccupied with nuisance crime and lax when it comes to answering for black lives. In poor urban centers those who live in minority enclaves settle their scores outside the law.*During the 1960s the number of people sent to prison for criminal homicide was less than half the number of homicides. From 1994-2006 suspects were arrested in just 41% of the 3,300 killings involving black male victims in Los Angeles.*The author does not preach. She shows. She explains. She tells true stories that will break your heart. Crime witnesses are terrified to testify because they and their families are threatened, beaten and often killed. Mothers weep over children who join gangs for protection or for the teenage allure of girls, guns and excitement.According to the author, blacks who make up only 12 percent of the U.S. population, account for nearly half of all homicide victims. The Southeast's per capita murder rate is eight to ten times the national average. The majority of the victims are black on black. So why was the budget for police overtime cut 57 percent? For detectives, working odd hours is essential. The author writes of budget cutbacks that eliminate necessary overtime and equipment. How can one do a job if the office phone don't work? Why would a detective have to live out of his sedan for two days when his unit lost the salvage cars they hoarded? When Detectives aren't issued departmental cell phones, they purchase their own. Detectives buy their own pads, pencils staplers, keyboards, calendars and binders. One detective purchases his own fax machine and printer for the office. Local appliance dealers provide video machines for interrogations. This book is an eye opener and a heart breaker that will change the way you see black on black crime in America and the detectives who devote their lives to seeking justice for its victims.Maybe the book should be titled, "Ghettocide" because it is about the physical, emotional and spiritual death that happens in pockets of cities all over America.

By Bella Rosa Jill Leovy's theory, in a nutshell, is that "men [kill] one another to settle disputes or exact revenge in the absence of a trusted legal authority." Even as she details the awful statistics - in 1993, black men age 20-24 died by homicide at a rate of 368 per 100,000 - she maintains that the lack of police presence in minority neighborhoods drives young men to take matters into their own hands.I get that gangs have stepped in to monitor and control neighborhoods in the absence of other local authorities, but the result is a casualty count that rivals a literal war zone. Leovy uses the story of Bryant Tennelle, shot in the head while walking down Eightieth Street, to humanize the incomprehensible numbers. Bryant's father, Wallace Tennelle, himself a homicide detective, and the detective assigned to the case, John Skaggs, illustrate the changes in the LAPD over the years and the frustrations of working in South Central. Leovy doesn't sugarcoat the problems of bureaucracy, misunderstanding and apathy, but she's also very clear about the bravery and dedication of men like Skaggs, constantly working for justice in a neighborhood where 20 young black men were killed in the 30 days before Bryant Tennelle was shot. It's an extremely timely topic. Leovy tells a compelling story very well and raises a lot of issues that deserve careful thought.

A book right for the times, now, more than ever By Nathan Webster It's easy to be cynical about the inconsistent, over-stressed, under-resourced, misguided and plainly race-oriented American justice system. Whether it's cops on the street or lawyers in a courtroom, the entire system is a poorly-run bureaucracy that moves papers and bodies around but doesn't actually accomplish anything concrete or long-term.So I was surprised that Detective John Skaggs and some of the others featured here managed to prove that even within this crumbling edifice of "justice" plenty of officers do their best - even when the system would be perfectly content if they sat on the sidelines, slurping coffee and marking time. It's fitting to write this review the day after Ferguson riots burn buildings and otherwise make race relations a little worse than they were the day before. If you read this review six months from now, you'll probably think "Ferguson? Huh?" because that's the kind of memory we have. I'm certainly tired of police violence that the state bends over backwards to excuse, but at least this book provides a counterweight. In LA, these cops DO investigate crimes, whether it's a gangster or a civilian, and they TRY to put the pieces together to find justice in the name of those who've died.I most like narrative nonfiction that tries to answer a "why" question. I get that inner cities are full of violence - but why? I get that police and inner city residents have a terrible relationship - but why? I get that cops have a hard time solving inner city crimes - but why? For the most part, Jill Leovy answers those questions in a ways that maybe seem obvious, but I'd never thought of before. In these post-Ferguson days, a lot of awful commentators point to the rioters and say "that's why the police need to be there, because look at these horrible people! Officer Wilson was at risk, because look at these rioters! They're dangerous and out of control!"But as the book explains, the violence in the inner cities is a result of a vicious circle. Leovy explains that the creating element in inner cities is the lack of police presence, other than minor hassles of meaningless crimes. Sure, a cop might jack somebody up for shoplifting, spraypainting or some other minor crime - but the system doesn't provide the resources to solve real crimes. So the relationship between cop-citizen deteriorates because residents never see the police, except to inconvenience their day-to-day lives, not to prevent meaningful problems. And, the resources are never in the right place - a concept like "overtime," Leovy explains, enables police to show up at suspects or witnesses doors at all hours, letting them get ahead of the criminals. Without overtime, and solving a murder is reduced to a 9-5 desk job, and that won't work. The departments with less serious crime, but more affluent citizens get more resources, while the areas with worse crime get fewer resources under the backwards theory that since witnesses are hard to find, there's no point in devoting resources to find them!So instead of law and order, the focus is on rinky-dink laws that don't matter, at the expense of consistent order. Without a central authority, the system disintegrates into a free-for-all. Nobody wants to live in Somalia, but without law enforcement proving they have the capacity to bring order to a residential area, that's pretty much what we have. Cops just can't drive through and say "look at us!" They have to solve the crimes that matter. Not just throw up their hands and say, "Well, we couldn't find a witness." They can't find witnesses because the cops aren't providing the stable society in which people risk getting involved.John Skaggs doesn't care about all that - he just pushes forward. He is exactly the emotionless - except when he needs to be - figure you want solving murders. He doesn't care, it doesn't matter - he solves the crime, that's what he does.Leovy doesn't offer a solution, but just her up-close observations made in 2008. Things haven't improved in the six years since (actually, the murder rate has dropped, but many root problems remain). Still, this book made me a little less cynical just for showing what could work. But there probably aren't enough cops like John Skagg (and several others who deserve credit), while there's always another bureaucrat ready to make their jobs a little more difficult.

I miss the loveable mix of likeable characters, humor without sarcasm or a sharp edge and general friendliness that pervades the Archie comics group. Reading Archie can be a vacation back to times when people followed a slower pace and actually interacted!

Nancy, Bess, and George go to Belgium to help a friend of Bess's mother. A lot of creepy, awful things happen. Nancy enters a mystery contest, but her manuscript gets stolen, someone tries to break in their house, and in Belgium lots of things happen, too. There are many suspicious people there, Ms. Marvin's friend's diamond pendant is stolen, there are lots of creepy trapdoors and passageways, even a ghost! I guarantee that you'll love this book if you read it.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Very Exciting By C. Carrigan I am 10 years old and I absolutely love this book. The story was fun and exciting to read and I couldn't put it down. This was my first Nancy Drew book and I'm hooked! I plan to read a lot more of Nancy Drew Mysteries. If you love adventure and mystery stories, you'll love this book and even if you don't, you will still enjoy it.

I can close my eyes and let my imagination take over. The story lives up to the Nancy Drew series with twist and turns in the plot (not wanting to ruin the plot i won't go into it here). It was read with a lot of energy and excitment that realy added to the expiernce. I wish they would release more of the series like this. I would highly recomend the expierence to anyone who enjoys Nancy Drew.

21 of 22 people found the following review helpful. The fifth Oz book... by no means the best By Blake Petit "The Road to Oz" is the fifth book in what is perhaps the greatest fantasy series of all time.. however, it's not really a book I'd recommend to show people how wonderful the series really is. At this point it seems that Baum was getting a little weary, and it shows, as this book has almost no discernable plot or conflict at all. Dorothy, again, gets lost in a fairyland, and again makes her way to the Emerald City, assembling a small band of strange and endearing characters along the way -- the same as she'd done three times before. What made this a weak entry is that there was no sense of urgency here. Dorothy was never worried, she knew as soon as she found Ozma she'd have a way home, there was no villain... by the time she made it to the Emerald City the book had been liberally dotted with references to how everyone in Oz loved one another and nobody was ever mean -- unless, of course, you're a wicked witch, but they had both long been vanquished at this point. The land of Oz is built on strange situations and characters, but also on story. In the original "Wizard of Oz," Dorothy and her friends faced the witch, hoping to send her home. In "The Land of Oz," Pip had to deal with an entire invasion of the Emerald City. In "Ozma of Oz" there was the wonderful story of the rescue of the Royal Family of Ev.By book four, "Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz," Baum seemed to have run out of plots and contented himself, in these few volumes, with just bringing in new characters and not bothering to craft a story around them. In book six, "The Emerald City of Oz," he took the step of placing Dorothy in Oz permanently, which was probably the best thing he'd ever done, because later volumes no longer needed to concern themselves with finding ways to get to Oz and just told really wonderful fantasy stories. ("Tik-Tok of Oz" is still my favorite in the series.")The Oz books, in toto (no pun intended), are wonderful for people of any age, but this installment is really for completists only.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. a grand evocation of a child's birthday party By marcabru As noted by some other reviewers Road to Oz doesn't conform to the usual requirements of a fairy tale such as a quest or continual action adventure. However, I believe Baum was aiming at something different here, namely, evoking the wonder, anticipation and shared excitement that young children feel at a birthday party (the point of the book is the celebration of Ozma's birthday). The first edition of the book was even printed with paper of different colors like the colored paper used for decorations. In these terms, Road to Oz is perhaps one of the best written of the Oz series with very few false notes or awkward characters. The characters of Button Bright, Polychrome, the Shaggy Man and Johnny DoIt are particularly good. Actually there is a quite a bit of action and adventure before Dorothy and her companions arrive in Oz. The transformations of Button-Bright and the Shaggy Man into fox and donkey respectively, while straight out of Classical myth, have an unusual twist: their motivation stems not from malice or the Gods' sport, but rather from the transformer's inability of seeing more than one standard of beauty. Once in Oz, Baum handles the pageantry and socializing in deft fashion for a children's story. In short, an essential part of the Oz series.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Weakest of the series, but still enjoyable By David Michael Cohen Everyone has their favorite Oz novel, but of the 14 which Baum wrote, this one is, in my opinion, the weakest. Unlike other Oz books there is little in the way of plot. This makes reading it uncomfortable as the reader spends most of the book waiting for somehting to happen, only to realize at the end that nothing happened. Also, I loved the tense yet humorus situations Baum masterfully set up in the other books. I rorared with laughter in the second book when Jelia Jamb "translated" for the scarecrow and Jack Pumpkinhead. The trial from book four and Dorothy's capture by the people of Utensia in book six also made me laugh while also clutching the book with fascination. There are no comperable scenes in "Road to Oz" and this is sorely missed. However, the book is still worth reading. For one thing it introduces the Shaggy Man, who proves to be a most enjoyable character. The Shaggy Man carries a device called the love magnet, which causes people who see it to love him. This subplot introduces a very mature and though-provoking conflict. Is it right to enchant people into loving? Is this a power that one person, even a well-intentioned one, can hold alone? What are the drawbacks of being loved by everyone? This subplot held my interest and made the story readable. Finally, there are cameo appearances in the end from many of Baum's non-Oz books. Clearly these appearances are a plug for his other works. One cannot fault him too much for doing this though. Baum wrote many fine books which had nothing to do with Oz, and this needs to be remembered.Despite this book's weakness, it did not signal the decline of the series. Most of the later books were quite good, and I found "The Tin Woodsman of Oz" (number 12) to be one of the best. Keep reading, as altogether there is nothing like the Oz series.

I am happy to find out what Shane was up to between book 6 and 7. I cannot wait for the third one. Although this was a complete story, it was too short. As a fan of the Spirit Animals series, I enjoyed this special e-book edition.
