If You Plant a Seed, by Kadir Nelson

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—A fuzzy, brown rabbit and a tiny notch-eared mouse plant tomato, carrot, and cabbage seeds and then wait for the plants to grow and produce. As they bide their time, the two sit in the rain, nap, and read books. Readers will notice the sky beginning to fill with birds, which the rabbit and mouse don't see until the fruits—or vegetables—of their labor are ready to eat. Then five winged creatures descend and look expectantly, in a priceless illustration, at the two farmers that try to protect their bounty from the intruders. A verbal argument and scuffle ensue until they all reach an understanding. After the seed of cooperation is planted among the seven characters, peace reigns and friendship grows. Nelson's charmingly realistic illustrations skillfully show the passage of time and humorously accurate emotions and body language. The textures shown in the fur and feathers and the small details in the large oil on canvas paintings create images for study (and framing). The message, so clearly read in the illustrations, is a universal truth—you reap what you sow and when shared with others, your joy will be magnified. VERDICT A timeless and delectable picture book choice.—Maryann H. Owen, Children's Literature Specialist, Mt. Pleasant, WI

Review “Nelson adeptly balances whimsical, naturalistic, and instructional ideas to create a story that satisfies on multiple levels.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“A timeless and delectable picture book choice.” (School Library Journal)“Though the message is as old as time, its delivery here is fresh and sweet as August corn.” (Kirkus Reviews)

By anniedelasol I order and read a lot of children's books to find ones suitable to support a curriculum of mindfulness, loving kindness, gratitude and connection to others. In all those books I come across a few real jewels; where the art is beautiful, the story is simply and clearly told, and the age level works for young children. This is one of those books. It doesn't try to say everything, but to say one thing very very well. I love this book. thank you Kadir Nelso. I hope you continue to produce other books with the same clear purpose and beauty.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful! By J. M. Hoffmann Gorgeous illustrations and a sweet story with a message to read over and over again.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. My kid adores this book and asks for it over and over By Delia Linnet My 5 year old loves this book. It has a lovely message and the pictures are gorgeous--the vegetables look so real like you could lean down and take a bite, the protagonists are expressive, and the colors are brilliant. It doesn't say too much, so it makes it so that kids want to discuss what's going on in the story and why, which is neat. We love this author's book He's Got the Whole World In His Hands, too, for the beautiful pictures that, like this book, just make you feel lifted up and glad to be in this beautiful world.

In this unique nonfiction picture book, the main character is a bicycle that starts its life like so many bicycles in North America, being owned and ridden by a young boy. The boy, Leo, treasures his bicycle so much he gives it a name --- Big Red. But eventually Leo outgrows Big Red, and this is where the bicycle's story takes a turn from the everyday, because Leo decides to donate it to an organization that ships bicycles to Africa. Big Red is sent to Burkina Faso, in West Africa, where it finds a home with Alisetta, who uses it to gain quicker access to her family's sorghum field and to the market. Then, over time, it finds its way to a young woman named Haridata, who has a new purpose for the bicycle --- renamed Le Grand Rouge --- delivering medications and bringing sick people to the hospital. This book makes an excellent choice for cultural studies classes; author Jude Isabella has provided several terrific suggestions in the back of the book for projects large and small, while a map shows the distance the bicycle traveled across the Atlantic Ocean. Award-winning illustrator Simone Shin's digitally composed artwork includes evocative depictions of Alisetta's and Haridata's communities in rural Africa, creating vivid comparisons between Leo's life and their lives. Youngsters will learn how different the world is for those who rely on bicycles as a mode of transportation, and how one ordinary bicycle --- and a child's desire to make a difference --- can change lives across the world. This book also offers an excellent opportunity for expanding character education lessons on caring, compassion and empathy to include the wider world.

The Red Bicycle: The Extraordinary Story of One Ordinary Bicycle (CitizenKid), by Jude Isabella

From School Library Journal Gr 3–6—Part of Kids Can's globally themed series, this tale of the journey of one bicycle imparts important lessons on recycling and social responsibility. After Leo outgrows his beloved childhood bike, Big Red, he donates it to an organization that ships bikes overseas to those who can't afford them. Though he's initially reluctant to part with his cherished possession, he soon realizes that it will benefit a new owner. Big Red is given to Alisetta, a young girl in Burkina Faso who uses it to transport sorghum to market. When Alisetta in turn outgrows Big Red, it's given to a medical clinic, where it becomes an ambulance. Children will get a strong sense of global citizenship and unity from the simple yet effective narrative. Shin's digitally composed illustrations are folksy and vibrant, perfect for this cross-cultural tale, and expressively convey the faces of those who interact with Big Red. Back matter includes some useful information on real-life organizations that arrange for bike donations, a brief note on Burkina Faso, and challenges and activities for educators to do with children. VERDICT A strong option for social studies curricula, this noteworthy title will encourage kids to think globally.—Kathryn Diman, Bass Harbor Memorial Library, Bernard, ME

About the Author Simone Shin is an award-winning illustrator and a graduate of Boston University and the Art Center College of Design. She began working as a freelancer illustrating for magazines and newspapers, and teaching children in the arts, eventually venturing into children's book illustration. Her inspiration comes from her highly active preschool-aged son, as well as her strong interests in music, nature and family history. In her spare time she likes to create things with fabric and cardboard for fun --- game boards, telephones, record players, violins, dollhouses, just about anything she can think of! After residing for many years in the Los Angeles area, Simone currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. She works at home illustrating children's books all day and all night.

Jude Isabella started writing kids books when she was managing editor of YES Mag: Canada's Science Magazine for Kids. Her inspiration mostly comes from paying attention to things that make her laugh and things that make her angry (she learned that from a famous journalist named Molly Ivins).

These books usually contain an interesting, informative and often inspiring story that promotes wise/kind world citizenship. The Red Bicycle fits well within these parameters. The story follows the journey of a red bicycle as it makes it way from a city in America where it has been well-loved and used by a boy to Africa into the hands of a young girl who uses the bike to aide her families' survival. Alisetta uses the bike to travel to the fields which helps her scare off the birds which raid her families' sorghum fields which allows her to harvest more than normal. With a larger harvest the family eats better and has a means of transportation to village markets. Eventually the bike becomes an ambulance allowing medical workers to transport the injured to the nearest clinic or hospital. I loved this story because it shows the value is one small act of kindness: the boy's giving up his bike when he's outgrown it. The illustrations are beautiful and strikingly highlight the value of the bike in the lives of those who use it. I also appreciated the information and photographs at the end of the book which shows the value of bicycles in Burkina Faso, the African country where the story takes place. Suggestions for places to donate to or volunteer with are also included. I found the book inspiring and I am now looking for a place to donate my old used bicycle.

By Infoqueen027 When Leo outgrows his beloved bike, Big Red, he donates it to an international organization that sends bikes to foreign countries. He’s pleased Big Red “will have a new home where it’s really needed.” The bike travels from North America to Burkina Faso, where it helps young Alisetta and her family earn more money. Later, the bike is adapted to become an ambulance and mobile medical clinic, helping even more people. An engaging story and a fascinating glimpse across cultures, this book shows how one act of kindness can affect many lives. Information at the back of the book offers suggestions about how children can help, and advice to parents and teachers for extending the learning. Cheerful illustrations and kid-friendly language will appeal to budding philanthropists and bike enthusiasts alike.

He works shoveling snow, cutting lawns and raking leaves until he has enough money to buy it. He rides it everywhere for many years until he is finally too big for it. Because he has taken such good care of the bike, it looks almost new. He wants the bike to go to someone who really needs it and will appreciate it the way he does. When he tells the bike shop owner, he tells Leo about an organization that will take bike donations and send them to countries where they are needed. At the donation area, Leo takes Big Red apart for shipping and soon his bike, along with 461 others, is sailing across the ocean on its way to someone in Africa who really needs it. When Big Red arrives in Africa, it is matched with Alisetta. She learns to ride Big Red so she can get to the fields earlier, harvest more sorghum for her family. She can also ride to market to sell the goods her grandma makes to earn money to she and her little sister can go to school. Alisetta finally earns enough money to buy another bike, but while she is gone to get it, pigs fun over Big Red and bend the spokes and ruin the bike. A worker from a medical clinic takes the bike, repairs it and turns it into an ambulance by attaching a trailer and stretcher on it. Now when people in villages can't otherwise get to the clinic, Haridata can ride to them and even transport them back to the clinic using her bicycle ambulance. Soon people in all the surrounding villages know about the wonderful bicycle ambulance that the kids now call Le Grand Rouge. What a wonderful journey big Read takes and what a useful life it leads. The illustrations are done in a folk art style which adds to the story. This is an awesome book that informs children about the world and inspires them to be better global citizens. The section at the end of the book letting kids know what they can do help with their outgrown or no longer needed bicycles was great and hopefully will encourage them to help others. Thanks to Netgalley and Kids Can Press for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Screw-up Princess and Skillful Huntsman Trilogy: Book Two

A Fairy Tales of the Open Road Novel

Modern day fairy-tale princess Taylor Hatfield has problems. One: he’s a guy. Two: he’s Sleeping Beauty, the most useless princess in existence. Throw in his true love, Corentin Devereaux, a huntsman descended from child-eating witches, and Taylor’s younger brother, Atticus―this generation’s Snow White―who tried to kill him. That didn’t go so hot.

For two years, Taylor and Corentin live their Happily Ever After. But Corentin is cursed to lose his memory every seven days, including his life with Taylor―a painful reminder that he can’t provide for the man he loves. Taylor insists Corentin has the strength to succeed, and when Taylor discovers a way to break the curse, he is more than willing to pay the cost.

When an enchanted blizzard devastates Corentin’s hometown of New Orleans, Taylor is convinced Atticus is to blame and grows desperate to find him amid the Big Easy turned frozen wasteland. Corentin believes Taylor is chasing a ghost while he chases the ghosts of his own past. Old tensions scratch open scars, leaving both to wonder if they have each other’s best interests at heart. The clock is ticking until Corentin loses his memory and the rabbit hole goes so deep they may never come out.

By Sinfully 4.5 StarsBratty but lovable 'Princess Dude' Taylor Hatfield and his true love, ex dark magic assassin, Huntsman Henri Corentin Devereaux, are back again. Only this time there's no road trip on the cards, as two years after the cataclysmic events of Americana Fairytale, (you really need to read in order to fully appreciate the intricacies of the plot), they're now pretty much settled in the town of Sullivan, Maine with their trusty pixie sidekicks, Taylor's tiny but spunky be-winged Fairy Godfather, Ringo (Love Ringo!) and his equally tiny but feisty wife, Honeysuckle...and things are...well...let's just say things are as normal as they can be for a quartet of Enchants (fairytale beings) living in a town of Mundanes (non magical peeps) blissfully unaware of the true nature of their neighbours! It's not all sparkly rainbows and Disney happy times! Taylor is constantly trying to control Zee, the sleeping dragon inside him, and Corentin completely loses his memory every seven days. A continuous loop, broken only by the ever growing magical journal that holds the on going story of his life. A mammoth task now taken on by Taylor, who painstakingly and lovingly catalogues the book for his cursed lover; recording every minute thought and action that Corentin has and does...because without it, their life together won't ever have existed! But it doesn't take long before unwanted things and questionable characters from the life they think they’ve retired from, arrive on the scene and upset the status quo; putting their Happy Ever After in danger of being blown to smithereens, when Atticus—Taylor's demented brother and THE ultimate Princess: Snow White—disappears from the mental hospital he's been held in since his and Taylor's last battle, and the whole of New Orleans becomes a frozen wasteland overnight. The hunt for Atticus begins, but soon becomes a cluster f***k of major fairytale proportions, as a host of wicked Enchants conspire to not only tip the world into icy chaos and madness but also destroy the true love Corentin and his 'Princess' have found together, by trying to shake the hard earned foundations of trust they've finally reached in their relationship. Is it the work of an insane Snow White or could a certain person have returned from the dead? Will Taylor and Corentin's true love bond hold fast enough to weather the oncoming Snowpocalypse Now? How does the mystical "Library" and it's mysterious, shady members fit in the scheme of things? But most perplexing of all…why is Rapunzel an oldish guy with a bald head and a crappy attitude! *Snort*Hahaha...this is pure Lex Chase magic and mayhem! Her fun, wacky, unique personality shows completely in her writing style and if like me you enjoy all things quirky, you'll quickly get pulled into her weird and wonderful imagination. Throwing alternative shades on well loved tales like Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Hansel and Gretel, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White... Lex puts her own inimitable kooky stamp on the world of Once Upon A Time and spins a fast paced tale that goes from zero to sixty in ten seconds and never lets up till the very end. I just love Lex!Fast, frenetic and full on, there's a lot to keep up with in this series so don’t look away for a second or it's easy to miss stuff that later down the line could be crucial to the plot, but that's also what keeps me gripped by this contemporary, urban fantasy storyline. It swings from snarky, giggle worthy fun to all action suspense, and the sort of dark creepiness, and touches of Brothers Grimm grusomeness, that’s always been an inate aspect of most of the childhood tales we all know and love,. Muahaha....What's a fairytale without a good old child eating witch or two!I thoroughly enjoyed the pace and vibrancy of the second in this trilogy which again ends, not so much on a WTF! cliffhanger, but a definite "this needs to be continued ASAP" vibe. Threads are left open and I'm still pondering certain outcomes, so thank ‘The Storyteller’ this is a trilogy with more to come from Corentin, Taylor and the gang. What’s in store next for these guys? OMG…anything could happen, so please make it soon Lex! Reviewed by Macky for Sinfully...Addicted To All Male Romance

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Really liked this book! By kara This book was a really good addition to this series! This book can not be read as a stand alone because Taylor and Corentin are the couple in the first book, so you must read that one first or you will be lost. You get more of Taylor who just happens to be sleeping beauty but also happens to be a man. But lets not forget that he is also a dragon too. Then there was Corentin who is a huntsman/ witch who can not remember anything after a certain amount of days. So he must restart by reading his journals to find out who he is due to a curse. I have to say I loved his character because there is just something about the brooding bad boy who is trying to be good. You get more action in this book while they try to stop Atticus Taylor's brother who is also Snow White who is very evil. You see a lot of the same characters from the first book while meeting new characters like the Queen of Hearts.I will be honest and say there were parts of this book that really dragged for me a little bit. But I really loved what this author did with this story and the twist on the fairy tales. I also really liked how this author wrote these characters. There were some you love and some that were so evil that you were not a fan of.All together I really liked this book!I would recommend this book!I received this book free in exchange for an honest review from Inked Rainbow Reads.

The third book of the Chronicles of the Secret Prince trilogy. Long before Deston was born, the gods chose him to be the match to drive away the darkness from the planet. But Deston has no desire to be a hero. He just wants to fit in and be accepted as one of the fae and live happily-ever-after in Tir na-nÓg with his parents and Margaux. After having spent months running away and denying who he is, Deston finally comes to the realization that he will never find the happiness he desires as long as Grossard has the Shard of Erebus. He may not like it, but he can't change his destiny and he has no other choice but to pick up the mantle the gods laid out for him and put his own wishes aside; for his human side is what is needed to do what the fae cannot—kill Grossard. Every minute he denies the inevitable puts his loved ones in greater danger and Grossard one step closer to his goal, and Deston is determined that no one else will get hurt. This is Deston's last epic journey—the final showdown between light and dark, good and evil, and he knows the stakes could not be higher. But what he doesn't know is that even if he wins, it could very well cost him the very thing he wants most in the world—to become a real fae.

Marjorie has created a wonderful fantasy world and has put vibrant characters in it who bring with them wonderful emotion, flaws, strengths and vulnerabilities. I was hesitant at first because I wasn't sure it would be a good enough storyline By jmhbh07 I bought this series for my 8 old son...he is obsessed with Minecraft and really wanted to read these...I was hesitant at first because I wasn't sure it would be a good enough storyline...I was wrong! They not only get to go along on fun adventures that they can picture in their minds from playing the game...but the characters in the stories learn about working together, being a good friend, forgiving and trusting others...I feel 100% confident and comfortable about letting my children read these...a great buy for our family!

Contemporary cosmopolitan moral theorists argue that, in our increasingly interconnected world, all individuals need to recognize that moral duties span state borders, involving responsibilities such as respecting human rights. Such arguments usually focus on the duties of individuals or on reforms for international political and economic institutions. The Cosmopolitan Potential of Exclusive Associations draws attention to how non-state, not-for-profit transnational associations can advance respect for equality in a plurality of less obvious ways. By synthesizing moral theories of cosmopolitanism with international relations scholarship, it is possible to establish criteria for assessing whether and to what extent transnational associations like Médecins sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders) or the International Olympic Committee cultivate respect for fellow humans and build transnational communities. As these examples show, not all non-state associations have the mission of advocating for human rights. Membership is also not necessarily inclusive of all humanity. Membership criteria exclude based on criteria such as professional expertise, athletic prowess, or certain religious beliefs. As a result, assessing their impact requires looking for partial expressions of cosmopolitanism that arise piecemeal and without self-conscious intention. Rather than defending one version of cosmopolitan theory as more applicable to evaluating the impact of associations, adapting and combining four common approaches to cosmopolitanism—(1) institutional cosmopolitanism, (2) natural duties cosmopolitanism, (3) cultural cosmopolitanism, and (4) deliberative democratic cosmopolitanism—makes it possible to evaluate institutional, developmental, shared-identity, or public-sphere effects of associations. Applying the criteria to associations that do not self-consciously advance cosmopolitanism shows the potential for partial forms of cosmopolitanism. Médecins sans Frontières, the first case explored, provides emergency medical care across the globe without establishing a transnational community with those it aids. The International Olympic Committee, the second case, brings the world together around global games in which national teams compete against each other. Dissidents in the Anglican Communion, the third case, unite across borders but do so in favor of an interpretation of the Bible that excludes gay men from ordained ministry. Despite non-cosmopolitan elements, each case has lessons about how respect for transnational equality can emerge in subtle ways without self-conscious belief in cosmopolitan moral philosophy.

The Cosmopolitan Potential of Exclusive Associations: Criteria for Assessing the Advancement of Cosmopolitan Norms, by Bettina R. Scholz

Review Theorists of cosmopolitanism make austere demands: universal morality requires us to look past our own group affiliations, beyond every incarnation of exclusivity and particularism. Pluralism, on this view, is the enemy of universalism. Bettina Scholz tempers and humanizes cosmopolitanism. Using a rich array of cases – the Anglican Church, the Olympics, Doctors Without Borders -- and a sharp set of standards, she studies the effects of membership in transnational voluntary associations. Scholz’s work shows when and how these groups work – often indirectly and regardless of their formal mission-- to develop cosmopolitan dispositions and generate cosmopolitan norms. She delivers a sober but hopeful message of the terms of coexistence of pluralism and universal morality. (Nancy Rosenblum, Harvard University)In The Cosmopolitan Potential of Exclusive Associations, Bettina Scholz makes a compelling contribution to the burgeoning field of cosmopolitan theory and practice. Most impressive is her rich examination of what might be called a post-universalist approach to critical cosmopolitan theory anchored in every day political and sociological practices that really matter. The book promises to be widely read and should be very seriously considered for course adoption in classes on cosmopolitan thought and theories of justice as well as constructivist theory in comparative politics and international relations. (Joel Krieger, Wellesley College)Bettina Scholz’s innovative new book aims to press the cosmopolitan project further, by examining the conditions in the real world that motivate individuals to advance cosmopolitan goals. As Scholz observes, many individuals belong to associations that are transnational in reach; an in-depth study of voluntary, transnational organizations can provide useful tools in understanding how and why individuals take up cosmopolitan objectives. Scholz develops what she terms a ‘mid-level’ cosmopolitan theory and in so doing identifies criteria by which to evaluate the cosmopolitan potential of transnational associations. Scholz’s analysis, which combines a sophisticated understanding of political theory with three thoroughly grounded case studies, can serve as an important blueprint for those desiring to create and nurture cosmopolitan citizenship in practice. (Patti Tamara Lenard, University of Ottawa)

About the Author Bettina Scholz is assistant professor of political science at Stonehill College.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Persuasive By Avid reader That we are all supposed to be living in a global village has become an overused catch phrase. We also know that this country was founded on a most elevated cosmopolitanism ("We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal " ... etc. etc.) But how can these aspirational ideals be translated into reality? Cosmopolitan universalism seems to suffer from the problem of all of our highest ideals: We find it impossible to square its demands with the particularistic political, social, and economic realities we confront. In this conundrum, Scholz's tightly argued book makes an important theoretical and practical contribution by describing and analyzing bridges between universal ideals and their partial fulfillment in the real world. Looking at transnational associations that were not specifically founded to advance universal human values (she excludes associations that were in fact founded for such purposes, e.g. Amnesty International), she studies the cosmopolitan effects (often unintended) that such associations exhibit. In a descending order of cosmopolitan rigor, she presents us--using a matrix of carefully established criteria--three case studies: Doctors without Borders (MSF), the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and a conservative transnational dissent association within the Anglican Communion. I found this combination of theoretical rigor and detailed empirical analysis particularly valuable and insightful. What emerges is a hopeful--if not exuberant--picture of our world. Partial cosmopolitan effects, often unplanned, on the road towards a global community of fairness and mutual consideration might not always be great attention-getters but they do add up. Scholz's book does all of us who are interested in a global vision of our world a great service by focusing our interest on cosmopolitan forces that have been overlooked and therefore understudied. In the process, she provides a rich grid of cosmopolitan criteria and effects that will make me look at our evolving international scene with a more sophisticated eye. This is certainly not a book that lends itself to casual perusal. At the same time let me stress that I am not a political philosopher or a social theorist, yet I managed to read it without any difficulty. This book is challenging not only because it is written on a high level of seriousness but also because it corrects many of the most facile opinions about our international world. I found it persuasive on both counts.

The Girl with the Glass Bird: A Knight's Haddon Boarding School Mystery, by Esme Kerr

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—Orphan Edie Wilson has been taken from her aging grandmother and sent to live with a negligent aunt and abusive cousins. When her mysterious and somewhat shady Cousin Charles offers her an opportunity to escape to an unusual boarding school, she jumps on it, even though it comes with some odd conditions. Cousin Charles works for an old-fashioned Russian aristocrat who fears his daughter is being bullied at school. Edie's task? Befriend and defend the Prince Stolonov's daughter, Anastasia—all while undercover. Befriending Anastasia is easy, and the two girls are soon close. Navigating King's Haddon boarding school, where the daughters of the wealthy live a throwback existence without access to phones or the internet, is more complicated, and Edie's loyalties are tested as she tries to find out what's really going on and whom she can possibly trust. Why does Anastasia keep losing her belongings, only to have them turn up hours later? Is she being gaslighted? And why does the kind, warm, and controlling headmistress of King's Haddon seem to know so much about Edie? In this self-consciously old-fashioned boarding school mystery, Kerr uses the frame of King's Haddon's strict rules to support the conventions of a thin plot, accented with pleasing nostalgic detail while maintaining a modern setting. The novel touches briefly on class issues but doesn't address them in a deep or meaningful way. Overall, the story is charming without being particularly engaging, reminiscent of Julie Andrews Edwards's Mandy (HarperCollins, 1990).—Katya Schapiro, Brooklyn Public Library

Review Praise for The Girl with the Glass Bird: "The British author Esme Kerr has fashioned a claustrophobic atmosphere worthy of an Agatha Christie novel." --The New York Times Book Review "[A] rich, fun mystery that will likely hook young readers. Fans of Edie will be happy to know a sequel is in the works." --Booklist "Set among skirmishes on the lacrosse field, forbidden midnight feasts in dormitory rooms, play rehearsals, and tea outings, the story keeps readers puzzling past its riveting climax, all the way to its gratifying conclusion." --Publishers Weekly "[E]xciting and mysterious. There wasn't a moment where you didn't want to read on as the plot kept you captivated with its twists and turns [. . .] a good adventure-mystery book which will make you want to read it again and again and again!"--Guardian Children's Books Website (UK) "This is a rollicking romp of a novel [. . .] With a wonderfully spirited heroine, wickedly unpleasesant relatives; teachers with hidden pasts and a fine supporting cast of lacrosse-playing girls. Kerr's debut is impressive and strikes just the right tone."--Daily Mail (UK) "This is an engrossing book, cleverly plotted and peopled by very real characters."--The Scotsman (UK)

There’s a magic to it that gets lost in trendy YA. That’s not to say that I’ve given up on YA, it’s just harder to find the magic. My latest magical find is “The Girl with the Glass Bird,” by Esme Kerr.I wanted to read “The Girl with the Glass Bird” the minute it arrived. Cover love! I could tell there was something magical to it, and I wasn’t disappointed.“The Girl with the Glass Bird” is like stepping back in time but holding on to the context of today. The juxtaposition of cell phones mixed with old-timey school rules helps make the book accessible. It also helps show you don’t need technology to unravel a mystery.Author Esme Kerr’s writing is accessible and her pacing is strong, although the book does wane in a few places. Esme descriptions are strong enough to allow the reader to place themselves at Knight’s Haddon School, but they’re also loose enough to allow the reader to develop their own sense of place. It’s a balancing act she performs exceptionally well.“The Girl with the Glass Door’s” plot isn’t exceptionally complicated — I did figure things out fairly early on. However, this book is geared toward 8-12-year-olds, so I wouldn’t expect much more on this front. Overall, it’s a charming book worth reading more than once. I’m looking forward to the next book in this new series.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. British boarding school mystery By A Reader I was drawn to the cover and I like a good British boarding school read, so I gave this a shot. It was not bad and the plot was well crafted, but ultimately the characters didn't spark to life for me. I did get caught up in the mystery by the end and found the ending satisfying, so that is good, but there were too many times up till then that I felt tempted to put this down. If the students or teachers had been more captivating or likable, and if there had been a bit more lightness or fun, I would have liked it better.

Lost Boy, by Tim Green

From School Library Journal Gr 6–9—Twelve-year-old Ryder lives with his mom, Ruby, in Manhattan. They have no family or friends except for their across-the-hall neighbor, Stephen Starr, who is homebound in a wheelchair. Ruby works hard cleaning hotel rooms, and Ryder has the best batting average in Little League. One day after a game, Ryder has a minor spat with Ruby, and in a freak accident, she falls off the curb directly into the path of large truck. She is rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors sadly predict that she will not survive given that her injuries have exacerbated an underlying heart condition. Ryder is alone with nowhere to go until Doyle McDonald, the fireman who was at the scene of the accident, feels sorry for the petrified boy and volunteers to find someone to care for him. That someone ends up being the grouchy Mr. Starr who can barely take care of himself. United by a desire to raise money for his mother's operation, Doyle, Mr. Starr, and Ryder devise a scheme to reunite Ryder with Travis Trent, a professional baseball player who may be his father. The quest is a rough one, taking Ryder from the belly of Yankee Stadium to a long journey with Mr. Starr to Turner Field in Atlanta, where they fail in repeated attempts to reach Travis Trent. Can they get to him in time to save Ryder's mother? The plot moves along swiftly with short chapters ending in cliffhanger sentences that nudge the reader to the next adventure. Green, a former linebacker and sports commentator, gives readers a behind-the-scenes view of professional playing fields. Ryder and Mr. Starr are the best developed characters in the story, and that's all young sports enthusiasts will need to root for this unlikely team who defy defeat and keep on trying no matter what the odds.—Anne Jung-Mathews, Plymouth State University, NH

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Lots of Heart and Unexpected Heroes By K. M. Martin LOST BOY was a great story with lots of heart and unexpected heroes. Ryder Strong and his mother Ruby have always been a team. They haven't had much money; his mom works as a maid in a hotel. But they have always had each other. Ryder is a good baseball player but his mom wants him to concentrate on his school work. One day, after a game, they have an argument and his mom is hit by a truck. She is in serious condition and needs to have a couple of new heart valves really soon, if she is to survive. Here's where the first hero comes in. Doyle McDonald was one of the first firemen on the scene. He is the one who began CPR on Ruby. And, when he learned that Ryder was alone, he stuck with him to take care of him. He took him to the hospital and helped get him in to see his mom. When he found out that she needed an expensive operation, he comes up with the idea of doing a fundraiser. However, he didn't know that he couldn't just hold one. There were hoops to jump through and time was not on his side. This brings in the second hero. Mr. Starr has lived across the hall from Ryder and his mom and has been an emergency contact. But Mr. Starr is in a wheelchair and suffers from fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva which makes him pretty much helpless physically. He is also really grouchy. He is the one who suggests that Ryder try to find his father to see if he can help.Ryder's only clues about his father are a signed baseball and a mushy love letter that his mother had hidden away in a shoebox in her closet. When he goes to the hospital, his mother in her drugged grogginess says the name Jimmy Trent, which provides another clue. Mr. Starr was an investigative reporter before he became ill. After some tracing, they learn that Jimmy Trent is not a pitcher for the Atlanta Braves.Ryder and Mr. Starr take off for Atlanta to try to contact him to see if he will give them the money for the surgery. However, getting to see a famous baseball player isn't easy and the pair has lots of adventures and difficulties before they can actually talk to him - and find out that he isn't much of a hero at all.The story was very engaging. I couldn't put it down. I loved Ryder's perseverance as he tries to do whatever he can to save his mother's life. I loved the grouchy Mr. Starr. They're happy, but just get by on the money she makes cleaning toilets. Ryder is protective of her, so much so that he has developed a pattern of turning down invitations from the kids on the baseball team he's on. He gets more of these now that he's blossomed into the best player on the team. He loves baseball and his dream is to be in the major leagues. Every time he mentions it, Mom freezes. She keeps telling him he'll become a doctor or a lawyer. She also refuses to tell him anything about his father. On the way home from a game, they're arguing about his latest refusal to attend a sleepover at a museum with another boy, when he jerks away from her and she stumbles into the street where she's hit by a vehicle. Everything becomes surreal for Ryder. At first he can't believe what's happening, but when one of the firemen takes him under his wing, Ryder becomes very upset and guilt-ridden because he blames himself. When Doyle, the fireman, uses his position to get Ryder into the hospital and learn how badly his mom is hurt, things seem pretty grim. Mom's heart is badly damaged and she needs 2 valves replaced if she's going to survive. An operation will cost $200,000 and the situation is further complicated by her signing a do not resuscitate order ten years before when she was treated for something else. By this point, Doyle has fallen under the spell that Mom casts on most men. He's determined to use the power of the fire department to raise the money, but it must happen within 2 weeks or Mom will likely die. Meanwhile Ryder asks his crippled and extremely grumpy neighbor for help. Mr. Starr can barely move, but his brain is sharp as is his tongue and he used to be a crime reporter for a big newspaper. When Ryder shows him a ball and a letter his mom hid in her closet, they start searching to see if they can find Ryder's father who he believes is a pro ball player. The search involves getting arrested, banned from a couple ballparks, a train trip to Atlanta and more roadblocks that you can imagine. Despite setback after setback, Ryder and his grumpy neighbor persevere and the ending is extremely satisfying. This is a great book for sports fans, kids who wonder about an absent parent and those who love an action filled story. It also does a great job of making a severely handicapped person come to life in sympathetic ways. All in all, a dandy addition for school and public libraries.

By Middy Greenlaw Tim Green has penned another wonderful tale, replete with real characters and a strong story line. This is a darker book than his previous works, and looks at the complexities of a modern teen's family life, good and bad. There's less baseball than a typical Tim Green book too, yet the whole pathway is interwoven around the sport. Clear personalities drive the action, and emotions are sometimes exciting, sometimes raw. It's a piece of real life that just fits.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This is a fun, humorous tale of Digger when he gets “lost” in the big city young readers will love ... By Deb It was going to be a lot of fun when Digger and Daisy took a trip to the city. There were really tall buildings and the streets were very busy. “The sidewalk is very busy. / ‘Stay by me,’ says Daisy. ‘You do not want to get lost.’” They walked by a window with all kinds of interesting hats. Of course Daisy wanted to go in, but not Digger. No, no, no way did he want to look at hats! Once again, Daisy told Digger to stay close because he could get lost. They walked up the street and there was another store with shoes in the window. Daisy clapped her hands and wanted to go in, but not Digger. No, no, no way did he want to look at shoes!Digger lay upside down on a chair while Daisy tried on all kinds of shoes. Boring. And then there was the dress store. “‘Stay by me,’ says Daisy. ‘You do not want to get lost.’” The next window held some really nice toy cars and Digger was very interested, but Daisy wanted to keep on going and once again said “‘Stay by me,’ says Daisy. ‘You do not want to get lost.’” No, no, no way did Digger want to stay by Daisy. He wanted to look at the toys. “Daisy keeps walking. / She does not slow down. / She does not stop.” All of a sudden something was lost and that something was Digger. What was Daisy going to do!This is a fun, humorous tale of Digger when he gets “lost” in the big city. Daisy just can’t seem to understand that poor Digger doesn’t like all the things that she does. It’s a hectic day in the city, but many young readers will so realize that Daisy is being selfish and not sensitive to her brother’s needs. The humorous touches in this series continues as the brother and sister team go on fun little day trips. There’s always something that goes wrong, of course, but all’s well that ends well. This time mischievous Digger gets back at Daisy. The artwork is vibrant, colorful, and very appealing. Digger and Daisy are a brother and sister team that will definitely be a hit series for beginning readers. Grades K - 1DIGGER AND DAISY:Digger and Daisy Go to the ZooDigger and Daisy Go on a PicnicDigger and Daisy go to the DoctorDigger and Daisy go to the CityThis book courtesy of the publisher
