From School Library Journal Gr 2–4—Rutabaga is on the prowl for adventure, but not the kind that most knights and warriors yearn for. As an adventure chef, Rutabaga, along with his magical walking kettle, Pot, explores magical lands and looks for rare ingredients and exotic monsters to cook in order to make the most amazing meals possible. He first follows a group of knights on the hunt for a giant and possibly tasty dragon and soon ends up cooking for everyone, from kings and royal pets to barbarians and ghosts. Things hardly ever go as planned, however, and Rutabaga often has to concoct an exquisite dish to solve his problems and help his friends. As the story continues, Rutabaga doesn't really transition between adventures and more or less just wanders off until he happens on his next quest, making this selection feel more like a collection of short comics than an actual book. Still, author Colossal perfectly mixes action and humor, similar in style to "Adventure Time" comics writer Ryan North, only with simple enough language to please the chapter book-reading crowd. And his simple, manga-influenced illustrations will be just as easily accessible. A promising first course in a series that could really take off.—Peter Blenski, Greenfield Public Library, WI
Review "Colossal's full-color, cartoonish illustrations, with their heavy linework and simple figures, match the light, goofy tone of the stories." (Kirkus Reviews 2014-12-15)"Colossal perfectly mixes action and humor...A promising first course in a series that could really take off." (Peter Blenski, Greenfield Public Library, WI School Library Journal 2015-01-01)"Rutabaga’s culinary feats in the comic...could easily inspire young adventure chefs to make some gourmet grub of their own." (Sarah Hunter Booklist 2015-01-01)"The graphic-novel format works well here, pairing vivid retro-toned illustrations with a mostly cheerful, bouncy narration...future chefs will be well pleased that there are a few real recipes at the end of the book." (The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books)

By Celeste Pewter I've never been a big reader of graphic novels - it's due to a lack of exposure, more than anything else - but there was something about Rutabaga's cheerful cover that called out to me, when I walked past a stack of advanced reader copies (ARC) at ALA Midwinter. So I picked the ARC up and took it home. And I am so very glad I did. Because I've found a book that is not only enjoyable, but an absolutely lovely introduction to cooking and healthy eating for the younger readers in my life.Eric Colossal introduces us to Rutabaga, a feisty, fearless chef who is always on the lookout to find the best ingredients for his food. There is no obstacle or dragon that will stop Rutabaga from getting the freshest and most unique produce, while he also offers his culinary expertise in a variety of ways - e.g. curing royal pets, and going off to cook with Vikings. If there's one word I would use to describe Rutabaga, it's "fun". From beginning to end, Colossal's stories for Rutabaga are full of sly humor and quirky details, as we begin to get to know Rutabaga and his penchant for finding the most unique ingredients to use in his delicious-sounding cooking. While many of Rutabaga's recipes involve fictitious ingredients, there's no denying the book's gentle emphasis on the value of eating fresh ingredients and taking the time to enjoy your food. It's a great lesson for younger readers, especially as they continue to develop their culinary habits.Outside of the sheer cooking aspect, Rutabaga also serves as a crafty jack-of-all trades throughout the novel. He frequently applies his cooking skills to other dilemmas - including figuring out the diet for a starving royal pet, and tracking a monster - and it's a nice reminder that a skillset like cooking isn't isolated to simply creating and producing dishes. There's practicality to that skill and related skills, which younger readers will likely also appreciate. Each story is also nicely accentuated by Colossal's bold, yet detailed illustrations - they're a visual treat for an already very funny tale. And while the book ends with a bit of a cliffhanger, but readers will likely be relieved to know that there are definitely more books on the way.Final verdict:Rutabaga: The Adventure Chef, is not only a fun and cheerful read, it's also an educational read.Through Rutabaga's fearless adventures across kingdoms, forests and with the trusty Pot by his side, Colossal is helping young readers develop a strong appreciation for healthy food, and the art of cooking. And in a time where people are increasingly trying to emphasize healthy eating, this is a great thing.I live in an area that has a strong emphasis on farm-to-fork cooking, and Rutabaga's ideals absolutely fit in with that mentality. I've already recommended Rutabaga to the librarians I work with, and will be looking forward to recommending the book to the teachers I work with, as well.Highly recommend for graphic novel fans, and young foodies. This is the book for you.

Engaging, funny stories for young graphic novel fans By Janet Hamilton Summary: Rutabaga is a chef in search of adventure when he runs into Winn, Manny, and Beef, three young knights off to slay a dragon. Rutabaga decides to join them, along with his magical cooking pot. Knowing his limitations, he stays in the background when they find the dragon, but accidentally ends up being responsible for defeating it. The four kids continue on their way onto three more loosely connected comic adventures that have Rutabaga using all his cooking skills and optimistic attitude to consistently come out on top. Grades 2-4.Pros: Graphic novel fans will enjoy Rutabaga and his friends. The stories are engaging, funny, and not too challenging for young readers.Cons: I had a little trouble distinguishing the four characters. I didn’t realize that Winn(ifred) was a girl until the beginning of chapter three.

Dillard, Jr. Rutabaga is a young chef who travels the countryside in search of new recipes and adventure. In his travels, the gourmand meets a group of knights-errant, a king, some Vikings, and other strange creatures. Along with his magic cauldron. Pot, Rutabaga helps his new friends battle a dragon, train a baby monster, and uses his knowledge of exotic fruits and veggies to battle a crusty cook in an epic cook off in the kitchen of a secret tavern. I loved this new series by Eric Colossal. As a professional chef, I am excited to see youngsters so interested in food and developing culinary skills. Shows like Iron Chef and Chopped on Food Network have really inspired the next generation to be more adventurous and willing to learn how to cook. I think this revolution is because of how busy the modern family is these days that youngsters see an opportunity to slow things down and bond with siblings, parents, and loved ones by preparing a meal that everyone can enjoy ever once and a while. Plus, there's is just so much great food to explore in the world! That's what Rutabaga does here. He scours the world for culinary delights and uses his food knowledge to help others heal, relax, or celebrate their cultural heritage. There are dozens of recipes peppered throughout this book that children can try and create (with parental help, of course) such as the Adventurer's Snack Sacks filled with meat and potatoes and Chicken Spear with Peanut Dipping Sauce. I'd love to try the Perfect Pep Potion. Though, I'm not sure where they keep the sweetened blood berries at Wal-Mart. There's also a few recipes inspired by Rutabaga's adventures at the end of the book for readers to try. Speaking of the end, I did not want this book to stop. It was such a fun read. The art was cartoony but very detailed. The scenes when the Viking characters battle the monstrous Koraknis were epic. Eric Colossal did a fantastic job on this book and I cannot wait to see where he takes Rutabaga next. I expect big things from the Adventure Chef series in the coming year. I think it will be making must read lists (for 2015) and winning lots of young adult reading and graphic novel awards. Get on the bandwagon now folks as Rutabaga is going to be huge. Now let's get cooking and reading! Worth Consuming Rating: 10 out of 10 stars.
