By kh Purchased as a gift for my step-nephew and he love love loves it (along with the Secrets of the Apple Tree). His mom said he wants to read them every night and loves using his own flashlight to see all the creatures. Trees are his thing, so I went with Rainforest and Apple Tree, but I think anything in the series would be a great pick and have a mom friend who owns others that her mother found at a bookstore (note: these are not easy to find and well worth purchasing on Amazon even though they come from third-party sellers). Don't get me wrong - I still love the classics and give those as gifts, but as far as books go these are different, exciting, interactive, fun, and yes, educational (without feeling like it).

It was gripping, the characters were well developed and I felt connected with the protagonist. The story didn't follow the path I was expecting, there were plot twists that kept the story moving forward but the author was able to end the book cleanly without ending the story as a whole. This story had heart without getting depressing, unlike many other stories in this genre.I've heard rumors of an Audible version of this book coming soon and I will definitely be buying it there too. I can't wait for the next book to come out, I have read this one 3 times now, and I want to see where the story goes from here. This'll be one I read to my boys, when they get a little older, to help instill in them the Cowboy Spirit of their ancestors, who tamed the west.

It's a beautiful story that incorporates part of our American history. I enjoyed it very much, and couldn't put it down until I finished every page. The detailed descriptions and comparisons brought the book to life- very well written.

I could tell he was well acquainted with the places and surroundings because I felt like I was there riding along with Jingle. What a great adventure! I hope there's more to come!!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Jules deftly handles the social terrain of elementary school By Latin@s in Kid Lit Written by Jacqueline Jules and illustrated by Miguel Benítez, Freddie Ramos Stomps the Snow is the fifth of the Zapato Power books. This sweet, playful tale centers on the special experiences around a school snow day, as experienced by the protagonist of the series, Freddie Ramos. Freddie has super zapatos thanks to a special neighbor, who helps him transform his usual sneakers into super snowshoes to help his neighbors. What sets Freddie Ramos apart is how the story strikes a positive note while accurately reflecting the experiences of kids from a range of backgrounds. The setting for Freddie Ramos opens up possibilities for subtly engaging with experiences that are relatively neglected in the sunny tales targeted at the primary grades. Despite the fact that many students live in apartments and know some financial hardships, the vast majority of books for children feature middle-class families living in single-family homes. It is refreshing, then, to follow the escapades of Freddie Ramos and his friends at the Starwood Park apartment community.Financial concerns are a reality for Freddie and his friends, but Freddie Ramos also suggests that even young kids can take positive actions in response to difficult circumstances. Freddie worries about not having snow boots, and we learn that most of his shoes and clothes are hand-me-downs from a friend’s older brother. Importantly, Freddie frames this fact in a way that shows a focus on the positive in his community: “At Starwood Park, people shared.” Attentiveness to the needs of others is prominent in the book, and later, we see how Freddie enacts generosity. In addition to his work cleaning paths for neighbors, when he notices that most of the kids don’t have a sled, he proposes a strategy for sharing that allows all the kids in the complex to have a turn going down the big hill. The Starwood bully, Erika, appears in a more vulnerable light when her grandmother’s purse is stolen with their rent money inside.Yet these more serious elements do not weigh down the buoyant narrative. My son (age 4) loved the special zapatos and the watch that Freddie uses to turn them on. I enjoyed the casual, untranslated incorporation of Spanish. (For why I think it’s so important that books not gloss these phrases, see this post.)Jacqueline Jules also deftly handles the social terrain of elementary school. Like many sweet kids, Freddie finds it easier to protect his friends from bullies than to help the bully herself. But his character stretches, ultimately rising to the challenge of being kind to an unlovable classmate. Readers see that Freddie’s greatest superpower is the generosity and kindness he has learned from his community.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Kristi's Book Nook By Kristi Bernard Wouldn’t it be cool to have a pair of shoes that let you zip around and do amazing things, just like a superhero? Freddie Ramos does know because he has Zapato Power.Freddie is a very special kid. Mr. Vaslov, an inventor, knew it. He had given Freddie a very special pair of shoes to test. With the press of a button on his Zapato Power wristband, Freddie’s shoes let out a puff of smoke and he can woosh and bounce as high as a basketball and he could run faster than a train. Freddie liked to use his shoes for hero stuff but today it started to snow. So much so, school was closed in preparation of the big storm heading their way. It was predicted there would be at least two feet.Freddie tried out his Zapato Power on the way home. The snow flew up around him and almost made him invisible. Not only that, the snow evaporated with each step he took. The next day the town had been snowed in. Mr. Vaslov gave Freddie some special snow shoes to go with his Zapato Power. Freddie cleared sidewalks and pathways for his neighbors. When Freddie discovered that building D residents had to be moved to the school because they had no heat he knew his help would be needed. He used his Zappato Power to clear pathways at the school so supplies could be brought in for the families. But, there was another problem. A thief had infiltrated the school and stolen some purses. It will be up to Freddie to find out who. He will have to use more than his Zappato Power to become the hero he know he is.Author Jacqueline Jules has created a fun series surrounding Freddie Ramos and his Zapato Power shoes. This is a great series for boys, but girls will love it to. The characters are realistic and children will love them and be able to relate to them. There is an easy to comprehend storyline with basic sentence structure for any reader to grasp. The black and white illustrations give readers a peek into each chapter. Parents and teachers will want to share this book as a read-a-long and further discussion. Zapato Power is a CYBILS award-winning series.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Awesome shoes By Mindjacked In this book Freddy and friends get sent home from school early because of a odd snow storm in March. It snows so much they also get the next day off as well. But when the heat breaks in one of the buildings in the Starwood Park apartment complex and the residents have to stay at the school Mr. Vaslov the Manager and maker of Freddy's Zapato Power shoes asks for Freddy's help, what they don't count on is a purse snatcher. You find all sorts of nationalities and circumstances at the Starwood Park Apartments. Freddy and his mom are Hispanic and it is now just the two of them. His dad was a soldier, a hero, and Freddy misses him a lot which leads you to believe he is gone. Then there is Freddy's friend Maria and her little brother who loves guacamole, Gio. Then there is Erika, she loves purple bubblegum and lives with her abuela (grandmother), that is a relationship in the making. But most of the people of the Starwood Park Apartments are not rich, some are ok but some really have to watch their money so when the rent money is stolen it is a huge issue.I really loved this book with all the differences of people and socioeconomical circumstances blending together was great, not that a child reading the book would get that nuance all they would see is that this kid Freddy has these awesome cool shoes that let him do these really cool things to help his friends. What kids doesn't think that each new pair of sneakers makes them run faster and jump higher? But Freddy's really did, and because of this he was able to help do all sorts of things and all his friends had more fun and less stress because of it. But it is a really fun exciting action packed book that will also make you very hungry for guacamole. :)

Does the Bible teach infant baptism? Or, is baptism only to be given to “believers”? If you are struggling to understand these questions, this short study will help. This short book makes the case that the Bible teaches we should baptize the children of Christians in infancy. The view is expressed in the great Reformation confessions (Genevan, Helvetic, Belgic, Westminster, etc.) and catechisms (Heidelberg, Westminster Larger & Shorter). Many of the greatest minds of the Christian Church defended this view, men such as John Calvin, John Owen, Jonathan Edwards, Charles Hodge, Benjamin B. Warfield, and many others. While other traditions hold to infant baptism, the Reformed “covenantal” view stands in opposition to Roman Catholicism’s and Easter Orthodoxy’s understanding of infant baptism.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. a veteran presentation of the historic Reformed position on infant baptism By A&J Torrey Author: Gregg StrawbridgePublisher: Kuyperian PressReading Level: Moderate-LeisurePages: 32Despite church history’s overwhelming agreement on permitting infants to the baptismal fount, the debate continues to rage in evangelical circles. In this particular arena, both sides reject the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic basis for baptism. So, in You and Your Household, Gregg Strawbridge enters the debate presenting a Covenantal position for infant baptism that is consistent with the primary doctrines of the Reformation. Because of the length of this booklet (32 pages), Strawbridge gets straight to the important question: “is the mature-individual (Baptist) view right, or is the covenant-family (covenantal infant baptism) view right?” (4).Strawbridge begins the short booklet by arguing for Scriptural consistency in covenant signs (4-10). This is consistent across the Old and New Testament, the covenant signs of the Covenant of Grace are offered to adults and children. Does this offering of the sign change? With this question in mind, Strawbridge plunges into the passages dealing with the baptisms of Acts. These passages are more commonly associated with the Baptist paradigm and argument for decisional theology (credobaptism). He even presents a head turning answer to the question “what must I do to be saved” when He quotes the Apostle Paul’s answer in Acts 16:31, “believe in the Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved, you and your household” (8). This argument is helpful for those raised in decision-oriented evangelism.Strawbridge follows up this sign based argumentation with a lengthy list of Scriptures placing children within the New Covenant (11-14). Without a basis for removing children, these quotes are definitive descriptions of New Covenant status for children. Strawbridge states, “no one can produce even one text which explicitly excludes them. Dozens of texts explicitly include them!” (14).Strawbridge even addresses a theological style argument dealing with apostasy (27-31). The only downside to You and Your Household is that Strawbridge does not address the Scriptural passages found among the Baptist Federalism position (e.g. Pascal Denault, Jeffery Johnson). Baptist Federalism denies that the Abrahamic Covenant was a Covenant of Grace. This Baptist rendition of Covenant Theology insists that God’s dealings with Abraham were merely a promise pointing to the New Covenant and thus the inclusion of children throughout the Old Testament is irrelevant. In You and Your Household, the Abrahamic covenant is only mentioned through the lens of circumcision (20-23). So while Strawbridge is correct in concluding that “any argument of the improper application of baptism to children because of baptism’s spiritual meaning, could also be an objection to circumcision” (22), he leaves Genesis 15-17 and the Baptist Federalism handling unaddressed.Similarly, the credobaptist exegesis and arguments from Hebrews 8-10 receive little attention aside from a couple bulk references. These crucial New Testament texts on the New Covenant have become the center of the baptism debate (often involving the exegesis of John Owen) and need to be discussed. Unfortunately, You and Your Household’s limited word count curtails these advanced polemics.Despite these specific shortcomings, Strawbridge provides a veteran presentation of the historic Reformed position on infant baptism. Strawbridge demonstrates that covenantal thinking encapsulates all of God’s dealing with mankind. Infant baptism is the natural, logical, and biblical conclusion to consistent covenantal thinking. You and Your Household is written with clarity and is a great primer. Its readability and shortness make it an excellent booklet for churches to utilize for covenantal education.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher. By Will Barby This is a short booklet that gets to fleshing out the the arguments and objections to the issue at hand in a well formed and readable manner. I grew up a credo-baptist and had a very dispensational understanding of the Old and New Covenants. However, as I have become Reformed in my theology and began to understand the continuity in the covenants and understand that the covenants culminate in understanding Jesus as the True Israel and that we the Church are the Israel of God, I have embraced Padeo-Baptism. That said, the booklet is a great place for those who may be struggling with what they believe regarding baptism, especially if they have not been brought up in a Reformed tradition. However, anyone who is desiring to learn more about the sacrament of baptism in view of the Biblical practice of Padeo-Baptism will benefit from this booklet.

From the Back Cover

Sometimes you have to step off the path to get where you're going. In the Urwald, that could lead to being eaten. But Jinx has to do something, and fast: the forest is under attack, and its magic is fading.

Three kings have claimed the Urwald's land. Their armies are closing in on the forest's borders. Jinx knows the Urwald belongs to no one but itself: the people, trees, and monsters who inhabit it. Can he convince all of them to work together with the wizards and witches to save their homeland?

Jinx also needs to save Simon, and so must travel into the dangerous icy depths beneath the Glass Mountains until he reaches the nadir of things—a spot as perilous as it is powerful. Only if Jinx can summon enough of his magic—the bright fire within him—will he be able to rescue Simon, defeat the Bonemaster, unite the Urwald, and fight off the invaders. He is the Urwald's only hope.

In this action-packed conclusion to the acclaimed Jinx trilogy, Sage Blackwood spins an epic tale about good and evil, fire and ice, magic and knowledge, and becoming who you are meant to be.

Summon, Search, Rescue, Negotiate, Unite, Defeat, Prevail - A Tall Order for Jinx's Finale By Pop Bop Some wizard apprentice books are very matter of fact and the style is straightforward and almost pedantic. Some, especially for younger readers, are more fantastical and the style of the magic is a bit dreamier and vaguer, (or, they are played for laughs). Some others, even for younger readers, are written to a much higher level in terms of complexity, vocabulary, and "literary" style. "Jinx's Fire" is written in a sort of in-between fashion. It can be so spare and abrupt that it feels almost casual or tossed off; yet sometimes a passage is striking and memorable, and calls up the feelings readers got from Book One. From chapter to chapter, and even page to page, you're never quite sure which style your going to get. That said, there are still many more grace notes, arresting details, and knowing observations slipped into the tale than is usual for this kind of book, and that adds a bit of unexpected weight to the undertaking. I favored, and still prefer, the first book in this trilogy. It featured a younger Jinx who was just learning about magic and the forest, and it was a great pleasure to meet the many and varied supporting characters. There was also a deep sense of wonder, and suspense surrounding the type of story Jinx would have. This is the third and final book in the series. We've gone from an innocent, befuddled wizard's apprentice to a hero who raises armies and negotiates treaties. Clearly, Jinx is older and wiser and he's figured out, along with the reader, how things work and what must be done. And now he has grownup things to do.As a consequence the book is a wrap up and it feels like it. It is thorough and workmanlike and checks off all of the loose ends. Some of it is rushed, and some of it is pretty thin. This may just be the fate of third, (or seventh or twelfth), books. Packing your suitcase to go home from vacation is never as much fun, or any fun, compared to packing to leave on vacation. So, if you've followed the story this far you pretty much have to read this volume, if only to secure closure. If you're new to Jinx's saga it seems to me that this is not the place to begin. Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

By Talvi Jinx's Fire brings this wonderful children's fantasy series to a satisfying conclusion, tying up loose threads but avoiding a saccharine pat ending. And truly, that has been where this series has excelled: highest writing standards, interesting and complex plot, and an overall arc that is well thought out and makes great use of three books. I would compare this to Harry Potter not because it is a boy in a fantasy setting but because this is children's literature that doesn't talk down to kids yet is infinitely rewarding for adult readers as well. It will stand the test of time.Story: Jinx has rescued Sophie but now he has a bigger challenge: finding Simon and rescuing him before his spirit is used up by the Bonemaster. But the fourteen year old also has to save the Urwald from his old friend Reven - who is now so obsessed with regaining his kingdom that he has declared war against two other kingdoms and plans to destroy the forest in the process. Unfortunately for Jinx, the longer Simon is imprisoned, the more power is sapped from the Urwald. He may not have enough power left to save his friends, forest, and self. The story continues its unique blend of "Jinx in Wonderland" - a world where everyone is mad except for our young hero. Author Blackwood is always winking slyly in the background, littering the story with amusing bon mots but tempering the humor with pathos and insight. That combination makes for a story that is grounded but never crushing. Jinx's character isn't an optimist and the despairing nature of his situation could have been daunting otherwise.I really appreciated how smoothly yet intelligently the various threads from the previous two books began to tie together in Jinx's Fire. Surprisingly, it really did all make sense - from the werewolves to Jinx's own family. And yet - it didn't feel like a deus ex machina - few of the solutions were easy or pat.I really agree that this series should be a classic - it has all the wit, charm, humor, and nuanced writing that make for a great story. I'm very glad to have found this series and read all three. It is a treasure to hand down to my daughter. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

A Splendid End to a Splendid Trilogy By FantasyGirl I felt like a little kid again as I raced down the stairs the minute the doorbell rang, for I knew it was Jinx’s Fire being delivered to my doorstep! I savored the cover and investigated the chapter headings, so excited to be at long last reading Jinx’s final adventure.I had no idea what to expect and that is one of the many elements I like about this trilogy…you never quite know where the plot is going to twist and turn. This installment was busy as many different happenings were going on. Jinx is in the midst of uniting the Urwald to fight the impending armies threatening the land whilst figuring out a way to rescue Simon and rid the Bonemaster without killing anyone else in the process. Sophie, Elfwyn, Wendell, and the others work alongside him (most of the time…).While I like many of the characters, Jinx has to be my favorite. He is not your typical hero. He is not big and strong, is rather sassy and not at all tactful (they are many humorous moments when the author plays on this fact) but yet in his own rough way, he cares deeply for his friends and is stronger in other ways than just physical stature. I liked the good vs evil theme throughout the book as the characters struggle to find the fine line between evil and good. There is also aspects of war and how that should be handled, which was another interesting aspect of the story. The ending was very good and Urwaldish (if that makes any sense). I do not remember how I stumbled across these books, but I am so glad I did!

Because clothing, food, and shelter are basic human needs, they provide excellent entries to cultural values and individual aesthetics. Everyone gets dressed every day, but body art has not received the attention it deserves as the most common and universal of material expressions of culture. The Grace of Four Moons aims to document the clothing decisions made by ordinary people in their everyday lives. Based on fieldwork conducted primarily in the city of Banaras, India, Pravina Shukla conceptualizes and realizes a total model for the study of body art—understood as all aesthetic modifications and supplementations to the body. Shukla urges the study of the entire process of body art, from the assembly of raw materials and the manufacture of objects, through their sale and the interactions between merchants and consumers, to the consumer's use of objects in creating personal decoration.

Review

In this unique and fascinating volume, the author calls the realm of her concern 'body art,' which is intended to denote all aesthetic modifications and supplementations to the body. Using rich firsthand interviews and information from modern India, folklorist Shukla (Indiana Univ.) traces the art of the body through the production of saris, bangles, and other goods and commerce and shopping, both of which are the arena of men. From this point, the author interviews individual women on personal adornment and finishes her study with a discussion of body art in the life cycle, with particular reference to weddings. For folklorists and cultural anthropologists, this is a treasure trove of information. For students of religion, it provides the material reference to the system of beliefs. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All levels/libraries.Choice, September 2008

A Must Read for Dress Scholars By Lori Hall The Grace of Four Moons' subtitle promises (and delivers!) an exploration of dress and adornment in modern India. The author's discussion is engaging and well-written putting her into dialogue with dress scholars such as Valerie Steele and Joanne Eicher. The book is beautifully illustrated, scholarly, and written in accessible language making it a `must read' for anyone interested in how people everywhere communicate through their appearance. In writing this ethnography of dress, Shukla provides a model for those concerned with material culture in general and dress in particular. Designers, curators, folklorists, and anyone who enjoys learning about the rich possibilities of dress and adornment will find this book a fascinating read.

10 of 12 people found the following review helpful. A New Classic Folklore Text By Rachel Gonzalez Pravina Shukla's The Grace of Four Moons: Dress, Adornment and the Art of the Body in Modern India is an elegantly written, yet accessible text that documents everyday art of and on the bodies of her collaborators in Banaras, India. This book not only documents and elaborates individual case studies, but envelopes them in a larger meta-study of the way in which scholars have (and have not) approached the study of body art as a simultaneous reflection of self and community. This ethnographic text rooted in Folkloristics, illuminates how choices of individual "adornment" in Banaras become integrated into the different layers of individual life processes and culturally rooted aesthetic-frames from which generalizable principles for the study of body art across disciplines and the globe become abundantly clear. Readers will see that the individuals involved are not those who choose to adorn themselves. The research frames comes to include, the families of the women being featured, the makers of jewelry, the salesmen, as well other social and consumer networks that all relate back to the object and radiate outward to include national and global markets, which implicitly integrate notions of the interconnected "local and global" into the study of individual creativity. The integrated focus of this book brings together the dynamics of individuals-as-artists (of varying sorts whether physical craftsmanship or the art of assemblage) with the objects that they "speak" through, as well as the lenses through which beholders "see" through and read out culturally, regionally, gendered, aged, and class based messages. This text highlights the hallmarks of folkloristic scholarship that is the focus on individuals as artists, and ability to document tradition and variations within parallel systems of production. This study does not focus on a single women, but multiple women, enacting their realities through material culture in different creative ways--India is by no means demographically homogenous, and we can implicitly read this discourse of regional and cultural diversity out of this text. One of the key elements in this text is the notion of choice. While privilege and caste might bring certain option to the table, the participants here shape their lives of their own volition, choosing each day how to represent themselves, on their own terms to the worlds in which they live. However, choice is also modified by implications of the larger social and cultural systems in which these women live, such as the influence of Hindu religious beliefs and the popularity of contemporary Bollywood films. Reader are able to see the ways in which these larger social phenomena become part of the discourses of the self in India, as they would in any modern, media saturated society.More explicitly, Dr. Shukla creates explicit dialectics between contexts of production and display through use, which are brought together in a unique social and cultural contexts. Readers can see the way in which personal aesthetics are both individual and cultural, as part of intertwined discourses of the self as produced by a series of participants--jewelry and sari makers, knowledgeable vendors, experienced customers as well as the ultimate factor, personal preference. Where women appear to be the focus, we see the interchange between men who make saris, jewelry and assemble bangle sets, and women who create personal assemblages to adorn their bodies are active, mutually constitutive participants in this larger process of self-adornment in India. This perspective is clearly articulated by the way in which the chapters flow, as displaying and wearing body art in this context is prefaced first by the processes of making and buying it.This is the perspective that has ultimately been missing from previous studies of dress and adornment. It is at the intersection between contexts where function and meaning gain powered as they are obscured, contested, and ultimately realized. It is the art-object's movement through these places and spaces that facilitates its meaning, which culminates on the wearers body in an intimate microanalysis arising from the interactions that negotiate social and personal aesthetics and expectations--display is however, but one stage in the life of these objects. Through the explication of similar objects in multiple contexts ranging from stages of production, consumption, and display, one sees the convergence of forms in the special context of the wedding. Readers get the range of everyday choices, and the specialized context of wedding attire, which includes the rearticulating of everyday types of art-objects (saris, bangles, and other jewelry) in a ritual context, heightening their relative meanings. In these spaces between contexts, which are linked through art-objects, interactions between the images of real people become qualified by a person's interactions with the ideal images of gods that pervade Hindu culture, adding yet another qualifying layer from which to modify the meanings of what outsiders might consider simple artifacts. The author makes nuanced distinctions between what people bring to and take away from their "home" locations, who they are, and what sorts of resources (for instance, financial and cultural capital) they have at their disposal to adorn their bodies to illustrate the utter complexity of often disregarded everyday adornment. She chooses to focus on individual case studies of women in Banaras with comparable resources in order to highlight diversity among rather than between social groups. A focus across between casts would only reaffirm social disunity without illuminating the nuances of personal expression, which allow the reader to experiences these women as agents of their own identity making, rather than solely products of their castes. This is not a study of India, this is the story of multiple Indian women as individual artists living within differentially connected or disconnected social networks that in-turn influence their personal aesthetic choices.Implicitly readers are able to understand, that while adornment is part of the creative repertory of each of the women that are part of this larger story, it is not their only or preferred creative outlet. The text by no means claims that these women's worlds area defined by dress or confined by their bodies, rather Dr. Shukla points to accompanying examples such as outside professions and domestic food preparation as parts of a larger body of creative opportunities in which these women assert their own tastes and make beautiful things in their own lives.Within this text readers begin to experience a vocabulary-of-dress as part of a communicative system, that much like verbal communication, both gives and receives messages, and in each interaction modifying the subsequent exchange. This discourse of body art is therefore active rather than stagnant, constantly being rethought and reevaluated through agents. This is not a book about how all Indian women dress and have always dressed (as essentializing discourse of static adherence to "traditional norms") but it is about current, living women expressing themselves through their body art now.The author complicated the notions of display by highlighting culturally defined norm of both seeing and being seen in this area in India. Being seen and seeing become complimentary, reciprocal activities. The role of beholder is a culturally embedded phenomenon as well as an experience between individuals who share a sign system. Readers are also allowed to enter that relationship, although mediated by time and space, through beautiful photography we are allowed to make out own assessments--to create our own discourse about the art under discussion.Throughout the text there is a wonderful sense of empowerment, where women are controlling their personal aesthetics and in essence expressing to the participants in their world. "This is how you may view me today." This implied through references the way in which gaze may be turned inward, as women's choices affect how they want to be seen and how they see themselves. At the same time, the reader may understand that not all choices are made to attract gaze, a women may want to distance herself from her husband or family and this chooses an aesthetic to detract gaze from her body (337).Here we are looking at dress and the body as composite parts of a culturally and socially embedded semiotic system of understanding mobilized through tangible realities of color, texture, length, fabric, and pattern etc. We are shown the relationship of the individual simultaneously engaging with their own trade, aesthetics, and social role, with other individuals in roles of, producer, seller, and audience as a series of cultural mediators. In The Grace of Four Moons, the author allows us to see that in terms of notions of beauty and art, objects are not where notions of aesthetics begin, but rather where they end. They reflect deeply held personal and cultural beliefs of life, beauty and the production of identity. Terms like "vanity" "modesty" "hygiene" "style" "creativity" "public" and "private" merge onto a continuum of the relative values of personal aesthetics. These elements, positioned relative to the body, then move with the body through geographic contexts, and in their movement, we may see how art becomes laminated on the body to express how an individual becomes situated in and between spaces potentially indicating both physical and social transitions. This perspective illuminates how one may study clothing and body art in diasporic contexts where concepts of home become by force or choice, relocated. What is most important about this book is the way any reader or researcher working on body art can seamlessly integrate their work in the this multi-part model synthesized here. This is not a work about India, or how Indian women adorn their body, it is a comprehensive model for the study of body art across the world that emphasizes the complexity of self-adornments and how in temporary, transitory and permanent ways becomes simultaneously intertwined in multiple social, personal and economic contexts. By connecting discussions of micro contexts on the body and in the closet, and macro contexts of regional and national trade and commerce, this text shows readers how body art not only allows individuals to enact identities based on social expectations, but to simultaneously recalibrate those enactments in the face of personal desires and social change.-Rachel GonzalezDoctoral StudentDepartment of Folklore & EthnomusicologyDepartment of AnthropologyIndiana University-Bloomington

By Angela I enjoyed the storyline the most and thought it was most creative short story. It also had some neat kids type of pictures that I think the kids between ages 4-8 should enjoy a lot! It was funny yet true of what animals do whether they live in the ocean or on land do generally. I highly recommend this ebook for kids between the ages of 4-8 years of age and especially those who enjoy nature and animal stories. All of the reasons for giving this ebook five stars hasknow been shared in the above sentences of this review. I received this ebook for free and in exchange now I have given it an honest review.Super work Uncle Amon! By Angela

A new series of original graphic novels published in paperback with french flaps. This is the story of a traditional witch whose job has become redundant. She must find another line of work to keep the bats and familiars' tummies full so she winds up working as a Lunch Lady for the local elementary school. There she meets a girl who guesses her secret and tries to blackmail her. Both characters are likable and this is a warm feel-good story about friendship. I loved the dark, Goth-like art, which the publisher compares to Gorey but I'd say that's going a bit far (no-one compares to Edward Gorey!) It is a pleasant read with some light-hearted dark humour. Lots of fun!

By TONI LANSBURY I'd never thought about what job a witch might consider, if the world didn't believe in magic anymore. The Lunch Witch answers that question, and hilarity ensues. This book is adorable. From Grunhilda and her animal companions (I really want to adopt Grunhilda's dog), who help her look for employment so they don't starve, to the silly principal at the school she starts working at, this book engaged me from the first page. The illustrations make this story come alive, and the writing is fresh, and full of fun. I hope Grunhilda will be back. I already miss the dog!

But no one really believes in magic anymore, so she needs to find a job. After her job as a fake witch failed (she turned the boss into poop), she needed to find a new job. Grunhilda finds an ad looking for a school lunch lady and decided to try it out. And she loves it. The kids hate it. All was well. Well, until a girl who was going to fail the grade figures out that she’s a witch and tries to blackmail Grunhilda into using her witchcraft make her smart. Grunhilda says no. A couple of days later Grunhilda is serving lunch and sees the girl who’s been held back, standing in line. When the girl says that she’ll always be stupid, something resonates within Grunhilda from when she was in witch training. Can a witch have a change of heart? What I Liked- The overall tone of the story is very serious (language and pictures), but there is some great humor in this one. The humor and illustrations have an edge to them. The story is packed with “dry” humor (like the school lunch lady ad says “Good cooks need not apply”). The illustrations have a dark-creepy feel to them. I like how the book shows the gradual change in Grunhilda from a mean witch to a nice(ish) lady. The pages had an interesting look to them, like a kind of old-time wearing. I like how Grunhilda and the girl change each other over the course of the story. I also like how the ending has you wondering if Grunhilda really did have a change of heart. At 180 pages, this graphic novel has enough room to pack a great story into its pages. It looks like this will be an interesting series.*NOTE* I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

Ebook PDF Online The Girl with a Deer on a Lead: A Fable of Beauty for Adults (and teens), by Neil del Strother

This is a book of beauty and healing, of enchantment and love. It is the life-affirming story of Finn, who has given up on life, who barely eats, and his journeys into another world. There he meets his fate, to save the world and lose what he loves most or to destroy it and keep his love. It is his choice and our choice, a choice that may just change your life... This book is written primarily for adults but it is also appropriate for younger readers. It is not immediately easy to define its genre, perhaps it is best seen as a mix of magical realism and the work of writers such as St Exupery, Richard Bach, Paulo Coelho and Philip Pullman (while being nothing like any of them really!). The main thing is that it is a very entertaining read... An eg UK review: "I was drawn to pick this book up by its lovely cover image (oh, I shouldn't judge a book this way?) and without knowing anything about its content...- started to read. Many hours later I put it down again having been compelled to read it from cover to cover. .... I'm a total sucker for quest stories and this one has an intriguing mix of metaphysics and gritty (sometimes almost too gritty for my tastes) reality. It has enough mystery and suspense to keep you turning the pages, and won me over by including the powerful subjects of alchemy, the Hero's Journey, the Divine Masculine/Feminine wound, psychology - and generally what it means to heal the self and in so doing, heal the world (nothing minor then). A powerful and immensely readable "Faerie Tale" for grown ups and younger people too."

I had the privilege of proof reading it at the beginning of the year and at once I felt great compassion for Finn, who finds himself on a path of enlightenment into another world, leaving behind the traumas of his past. I was absolutely gripped to the very end by Neil's wonderfully woven words and his intricate and exciting plot and found it totally un-putdownable! In fact at once I knew I wanted to illustrate the cover, as his imagery, which is superbly described, resonates deeply with my own work. For me, it is the perfect collaboration. I am delighted to say that I will be designing his future books too, which is hugely exciting for me.Your words are just beautiful Neil, heart felt and soulful and I am so looking forward to the next!
