This delightful debut picture book celebrates both the joy of venturing into the unknown and the value of staying connected to loved ones back home. It stars a little ball of yarn who can’t resist the tug of adventure, the twists and turns of discovery, or the comfort of family and friends. Edmund is a ball of yarn and a ball of energy! From the time he could roll, he’s been bouncing down his front steps to explore, and his parents have always been right there to reel him in and roll him back up. But now that he’s bigger, Edmund is ready to discover the wonders of the world. Everything is new and exciting—but sometimes, even a little ball of yarn gets lonely, and there’s nothing better than the comfort of being around those he cares about.

From School Library Journal K-Gr 3—A small blue ball of yarn seeks a life of adventure. When Edmund was young, his parents would reel him in after his journeys. When he gets bigger, the "tug of discovery" is too much to resist and Edmund travels far afield. If he feels melancholy, Edmund follows the familiar, welcoming pull leading him back home. Kolb's stylized, digitally created cartoons are animated with bright colors and lots of action. The bundle of wool is pictured sailing through the air on the back of a kite, chatting with a pin cushion, and being chased by playful kittens. VERDICT Tightly woven with wordplay, this is a whimsical story of family ties.—Linda Ludke, London Public Library, Ontario, Canada
Review “Sunny illustrations. . . . [Edmund’s] trailing tail, goofy smile, twirly ‘bangs,’ baseball cap and jaunty backpack will allow young readers to identify with him. . . . They will smile with recognition when he meets ‘interesting people’ in the shapes of bottles, toilet paper rolls, buttons and even a friendly pincushion. They will undoubtedly cheer when Edmund exhausts the possibilities of travel and rolls himself home to family and friends. . . . This long extended metaphor filled with laugh-worthy wordplay will comfort children and parents alike.”

Tightly woven with wordplay, this is a whimsical story of family ties.”—School Library Journal “Kolb has a bright, clean drawing style that will remind readers of their favorite contemporary animation, and his panoramas make it fun to follow Edmund’s travels and the trail of yarn he leaves in his wake. . . . Wonderful debut about belonging, family and closeness – the things that are worth the most in our lives By Helpful Advice ‘Edmund Unravels’, written and illustrated by Andrew Kolb, is a warm and emotional debut that tells a story about the importance of belonging, of what the home is and the people who live there are, the family ties and need that after all the discoveries we return close to those that love us and we love them. The main character Edmund is a ball of yarn that yearns all the time for adventure since the time when he was able to roll from the first time. And when he was smaller, Edmund’s parents were always close to roll him back, but now he is grown up and ready to explore the vast world before him.As Edmund decide to go far and away he will become smaller and smaller with each place he visited, and suddenly will start to realize that he begins missing something – his beloved ones and his home because no matter how exciting our adventures are, eventually we want closeness and love of beloved persons…Andrew Kolb, a new author on the children book scene, managed to create with his debut a wonderful story understandable in any language, anywhere in the world, that through the charming yarn ball tells about finding ourselves by exploring the world, in the end never forgetting where we actually belong.Given the book lesson may be a bit difficult for the youngest to understand, this makes the book a primarily recommended for children between 5 and 8 years of age; still, thanks to the excellent illustrations even younger readers will endlessly enjoy the adventures of this unusual hero, a kind we have not met as the main character so far. Therefore, this picture book shows that for a skilled author has no restrictions on the creativity, even if the setting and the characters are unusual – therefore, taking into account the level of quality of his debut I cannot wait the next work by this author.Given the inspiring theme, the unique main character and beautiful illustrations, Andrew Kolb’s ‘Edmund Unravels’ picture book is certainly worth money and time spent reading it with your children – a very special book that can be recommended for preschool and younger school children as a work that in charming way speaks about belonging, family and closeness – the things that are worth the most in our lives.

By chemistrymonkey21 I didn't buy this here on Amazon, but saw that it only has 2 reviews at the time. Edmund is an adorable little ball of yarn that loves to go on adventures and can't be kept at home, but he gets homesick sometimes and needs to be reminded that his family is always there waiting for him. I bought this book and sent it to my brother who is serving in the Army over in South Korea. We haven't seen him in over 2 years and when I saw this book I knew I had to send it to him.The illustrations are fantastic and the story is short, but to the point. If you have someone that loves adventures as much as Edmund, this is a cute, fun way to tell them you'll always be there when they decide to come home.
