Charlie the Ranch Dog is back with another beautifully illustrated adventure By Helpful Advice ‘Charlie Plays Ball’ written by The Pioneer Woman Ree Drummond and again beautifully illustrated with Diane deGroat artwork is another installment in author’s known and long-lasting ‘Charlie the Ranch Dog’ series of books for children. For those loyal fans of Drummond/ deGroat work that follow their series for a longer time this latest sequel would be welcome add-on in collection about beloved Charlie character. Charlie this time, together with his family and friends, is going to take part in various entertaining sports with ball – basketball, football and soccer. And, with his complete (playful) engagement Charlie will lead his team to the victory…‘Charlie the Ranch Dog’ series at first attracted me with their illustrations that remind me of the picture books from my childhood with its slightly retro style. And though the stories brought in each particular edition are not difficult to understand and usually do not have some profound message, these are still the books with which children will have a great time with regard to the authors style and appealing artwork.Though Drummond became known because of her cooking website and bestselling cookbook ‘The Pioneer Woman Cooks’ with this series of children's books she showed her versatility, that quickly secured Charlie own popularity among children and their parents. Therefore, if your children are already fans of Charlie the Ranch Dog, you will not be disappointed with this new sequel of his adventures, while for those who have not had the chance to enjoy Charlie’s playfulness I can highly recommend his series to parents and grandparents that will remind them to the picture books from their own childhood.

I have followed Ree Drummond, The Pioneer Woman, for many years. I love all her Charlie Books and her cookbooks. I think this is my favorite of all the Charlie books so far. It is bad to say I have them all and I don't have kids?? Any book in this series would make a great gift for any child. Her cookbooks would make a good gift for any adult. Highly Recommend.

He ropes, he rides, and he eats – okay he really doesn’t rope and he just rides in trucks but he does eat a lot. And eats. Besides eating, Charlie also loves it when the ranch people play ball. Come with Charlie as he goes and PLAYS BALL! [He also takes a nap and eats, but that’s not the point]What I Thought- Charlie is amazing. The series is awesome. I may be a tad biased, because we also have a basset hound and the books has the basset personality down pat. The books are funny and really cute. I love the fact that Charlie is a real dog. It brings a good touch of realism to the story. The illustrations are funny, usually with under-lying humor in the background. For example, Charlie has a little chipmunk friend on almost every page. Ms. Drummond really knows how to write a great story!*NOTE* I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Amazing!Definitely deserved more than 5 stars! By Kim What an amazing story! I loved Taylin's character and the relationship between her and her brothers was so great. I loved that they watched out for her.The curse has been broken, but Taylin is struggling with all the emotions she is feeling now. She is having trouble dealing with all her past trauma and it is causing her to live in fear. Her brothers step in to try and get her some help and from there the story takes off.Taylin is changing from the the mean goth girl to trying to be a loving daughter. This is really so sweet and her family (the Banes) are thrilled about her change. There is a center now for people who have innate magic (now that the curse is broken) and these people are wanting to make sure all of Luke's, Matt's and Taylin's history is correct. At this place, Taylin meets Zach, who is a hunter (without the job since the curse is broken)..... And boy do sparks fly...!This is an amazing continuation of the series. There is so much that happens in this book. I couldn't wait to see how it would end. I did suspect who the culprit/evil one was but did not realize all the details that surrounded that part of the story. (As you can tell, I try not to give spoilers....)Taylin is a wonderful person and I really felt for her. She is just as described in the book... Crunchy on the outside, gooey on the inside. This story is very well rounded, you fall in love with the main characters and I enjoyed seeing the relationship between Taylin and Zach unfold. Now I am looking forward to reading about Matt's HEA!For parents who screen books before their teens read them, there is some mild language in this book, with the exception of the "F" word used a few times. There is kissing and things at times things get pretty heated between Zach and Taylin (especially one scene) but they never become intimate. There is also a couple of sexual innuendos. All in all, a wonderful story and I am so thankful for the author gifting me with a copy in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed learning more about these three and all they had been through and also seeing how their lives were going after the curse had been broken.

Taylin and her 2 brothers have had extraordinary lives. Now suddenly they are in a new situation. As Taylin struggles with this, mysterious events unfold. And then there is Zach. She knows he is dangerous and everyone keeps telling her to stay away from him, but can she?? The ending took me by surprise - a must read.

The American Civil War has amazing photographic history; colorizing the photos is both unnecessary and annoying.Apart from that, thisbook offers a good visual overview of the artifacts (and some history) of the American Civil War. Good for basics: names, dates, events.Don't miss the pages at the back, offering facts, Q&A, a timeline (list!), suggestions for further research, a glossary, and an index.A timeline... should be a LINE.

The final book in the trilogy will be eagerly anticipated by fans.

Every year the futuristic school, Cragbridge Hall, holds its most popular tournament-the Race: a series of challenges that require the use of the school's amazing inventions like its holographic time machine! But this year is different. Rather than a monetary or academic reward, this year's winner will be the recipient of a carefully guarded school secret: a secret that could prove both powerful and dangerous.

Afraid that the secret may be one of their Grandfather's inventions, Abby and Derick gather several friends and enroll in the contest. But when Derick gets a mysterious message from the future, the team of friends must figure out how to succeed even when they know they are destined to fail. The stakes have never been higher. A page-turning, time-travel adventure that teaches powerful lessons about choice and consequence, believing in yourself, and valuing the lessons of history.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Exciting adventure By Rhonda 5 STARS I really this adventure series. It is a fun dangerous adventure in a school of smart kids. Everyone of the kids but one are super smart. Abby is just normal smart her twin brother is way smart. There Grandfather created Cragbridge Hall and he made exception for Abby. Abby does not give up, she runs fast, cares about others and risks her life to save everyone. Derick Cragbridge is a twin. Abby, Derick and two of their friends, Rafa and Carol have learned some of their Grandfather's secrets about time-travel. They have learned how to go to the past and the present. There is only a select few that know and have keys to travel. They have had two previous adventures to stop a group of bad guys led by Muns. Muns has learned about the machine to travel in time but he needs three keys to work the machine he stole. He wants to go back and change lots of things so he becomes powerful. Abby & Derick learn there is a plan to take over a race in the school so that he can get the keys. A lot of the good guys are unconscious so it is up to the kids to save everyone. So Abby & Derick gather a group of kids to race through the challenges to win. Through all the great inventions you learn about history in a fun way. It is exciting, I love the lessons about doing your best and learning through trials. How much you grow from them. What would you change in the past could effect your present. If you knew the ending of your life you might not achieve what you could do. I would love to read more in this series, but I don't know if their will be more to it. The twins have only been to school one year that took three books to tell their adventures. I love the science fiction of this story. That it makes you think about your choices. Also it is a clean read. I was given this ebook to read and in return I agreed to give a honest review of The Impossible Race.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Impossible Race By Monica My boys (13 and 11) and I loved the first two books in this series, and have been counting down the days until this one came out. It's finally here, and it did not disappoint! It is the perfect ending (Does it really have to end?) to such a fun series. I love the characters in this book. Abby, Derick, Carol, and Rafa continue in this story, and there are some great new characters as well. I love Abby's attitude, and I love that she never gives up. She grows a lot in this book, which is good to see. You actually see a slightly more vulnerable side to Derick in this book, which makes him seem more real and likable. Carol is still hilarious; I love her wit and charm. There are so many great lessons in this book: never give up, always try your best, look at things in new ways. I love that it makes being smart and trying hard in school a good thing. There isn't as much history in this book as there was in the first two, but there are other things that make up the difference. Think dinosaurs, dragons, robots, the future, space, and spies. I highly recommend this book and series for any middle-grader, and even a little older. It would make a fantastic read-aloud. There is no profanity and no "intimacy," although there is some minor violence when they fight dragons and robots. You may read my full review on my book blog: the-readathon.blogspot.com.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Home Run! By Sharon H Brown From falcons to rhinos, Beowulf to robotics, Nathan Hale to Joan of Arc- this book has it all. It is all masterfully woveninto a futuristic story of determination and friendship. The story is full of action, twists, and turns. The author really 'gets' the Jr High age characters and their insecurities, relationships, and quirks. I LOVE the life lessons that are woven into the story; having confidence in yourself despite others opinions, good friends can help you make it through any challenge, the future is determined by choices we make, etc..It was a great conclusion to the series. I can't wait to see what Mr. Morris writes next!

From School Library Journal Gr 5–8—Evil ex-scientist Karl Strand is leading an army of robotically enhanced soldiers in a mission to take over the world. A group of friends decide to band together and forget their differences in order to defeat this madman. As fear sets in, one by one, alliances are broken and this could mean a war. Can Aluna and her friends, Hoku, Kampii, Equin Dash, and Aviar, complete Aluna's scheme or are they doomed? The action picks up right away with the friends executing Aluna's plan to dress up like Upgraders, robotically enhanced humans, in order to take down evil from within. Each character is given a chance to have a point of view. Compared to the other novels in the series, the characters are more fleshed out. Familiarity with the previous titles is necessary in order to truly understand the plot. Kate Rudd's voice moves the story along and differentiates the characters. Excellent finale, great world, characters and messages By Anya @ On Starships and Dragonwings Horizon by Jenn Reese is the conclusion to the Above World trilogy, a mix of sci-fi and fantasy middle grade that has continued to incorporate more and more cool ideas and messages throughout! If you don’t want to be spoiled, check out my review of Above World instead ;-). If you’ve enjoyed this series so far, then you have to read the final book since it continues to deliver all the fun and magic that Above World and Mirage started. We even get chapters from a few new points of view, yey!Note: I received Horizon from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Some things may have changed in the final version.Horizon by Jenn Reese (Above World #3)Published by Candlewick Press on April 8th, 2014Genres: Fantasy, MG, Sci-fiLength: 400 pagesHow I got my copy: PublisherAluna and Hoku, Kampii from the City of Shifting Tides, and their friends, Equian Dash and winged Aviar Calli, are determined to stop a war. The maniacal ex-scientist Karl Strand is planning to conquer the world with his enormous army of tech-enhanced soldiers . . . unless the four friends can get to Strand first. Aluna’s plan is dangerous: pose as Upgraders and infiltrate the army. But the enemy isn’t what they expected and the strategy begins to crumble. When the friends are torn apart by conflicting allegiances, their slim chance of avoiding war seems to disappear completely. For Aluna and Hoku, what began as a quest to save their own people has become a mission to save the world. But do Aluna and her friends have any hope of defeating Strand if they can’t take him on together?Strengths:Horizon really challenges all of our four main characters and they rise to those challenges in different ways. There is just so much character development is so many different directions and I was so happy that Aluna, Hoku, Cali, and Dash really started to grow into the people they were meant to be!There are some great messages both in the previous two books and in Horizon and it made me so happy. This series in general has some great themes about people with disabilities still being cool people, about how stereotypes about a group of people being evil don’t make much sense once you get to know some of those people, and about acceptance of all sorts in general. There is also a point at which Aluna realizes that if other people, her father especially, are disappointed in her, then that’s their problem, not hers. Love this!Horizon delighted me by its casual addition of acceptance of homosexuality in this future world. Aluna’s sister asks if she’s interested in any “boys or girls” and when Dash says “fathers” instead of “parents” no one bats an eye. Awesome!!One of the fun things about this series is the sci-fi spin on all of the typical fantasy creatures, and Horizon introduces a new type of humanoid critter along with giving us a better understanding of some of the ones only touched on previously.Middle-grade romances are so adorable when the kids get to the holding hands and kissing on the cheek stage *giggles furiously*.Weaknesses:I get annoyed when there are multiple points of view and they switch at cliffhanger moments. Horizon started doing this a lot towards the end because there are two major fights that happen. These sorts of switches just make me want to skip ahead, finish one battle, and then go back to read the other.A lot of things need to be wrapped up in Horizon and it really started to feel like too much. I could easily have seen Horizon being two books instead of one and it might have worked better. This is a typical problem with middle-grade, but it really became a hinderance to my enjoyment of Horizon: it seemed unrealistic for these kids to have so much respect so easily. There are a lot of adults who treat the main characters like adults, even though they are young teens and in no real way qualified to be bossing anyone around.Summary:Horizon by Jenn Reese was a great ending for the Above World trilogy and I really wish that it wasn’t over! The great mix of sci-fi and fantasy elements is just so much fun in Horizon. Add to that the really heartwarming messages woven into the story and I want to pass out copies of the Above World trilogy to every preteen I meet. If you enjoy middle-grade that is a bit on the older side of the age range or are looking for a really fun sci-fi/fantasy trilogy for a preteen or young teen, definitely check these books out!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Best of the three By Sarah This series has only gotten better as it goes along. There is SO much to love about it--the setting, the cool science fictional concept, the adventurous plot--but it's the characters and their relationships that really makes this book stand out from the rest. The characters are rich and individual, brave but full of doubt, too, and real in a way that I don't often see in middle grade books. By the end I felt like I knew Aluna and Hoku, Dash and Callie, and I completely loved them. What really stood out for me, though, is that the author doesn't take the easy path. One of the things that made The Hunger Games a less-than-satisfying read for me was that the author takes away the hard choices from Katniss, her protagonist. Jenn Reese refuses to take that easy path. Here, people make choices and then they have to live with the consequences in ways that make me admire them--and the author's skill--even more. I was on the edge of my seat as I read, wondering how the author was going to pull it all off, but she did, beautifully. To sum up: a vividly written, inspiring, really terrific end to a wonderful series.

This third and final of the trilogy was just released last week and I've finished reading the series now and they are BEAUTIFUL and glorious. Far-future adventures of kids challenging the status quo to heal the world. Coming into their own, developing skills, fighting battles, and most of all finding friends who become family. Get all three of these gorgeous hardcovers (I think of them as the blue book, the red book, and the green book) and give them as a gift to every kid you know. They'll thank you for it.

What if an entire world of MONSTERS lived underneath your floor? Martina is having trouble sleeping because she is afraid monsters might break through the floor and bring her into the monster world where she'll have to learn how to scare humans. Meanwhile, Anitram, a little girl monster, is also having trouble sleeping. There's a noisy little human jumping on the bed in the upside-down world under her floor! Martina and Anitram have more in common than they realize and when a mysterious hole opens up in the floor between their worlds, they are in for a big surprise! A beautiful and clever tale that makes a perfect bedtime story for anyone who is afraid of (or wants to become friends with) a monster!

I Will Fight Monsters for You, by Santi Balmes

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—Martina is scared of the monsters in the night. The sweet girl is convinced an upside-down city populated by monsters exists beneath her bedroom floor. Every night, she must make sure she remains completely under the safety of her blankets so she doesn't get pulled into the monster's world. When her father assures her, "I will fight MONSTERS for you," she manages to fall asleep. That night, Martina dreams of a furry, pink monster named Anitram, who lives a life that mirrors her own. Anitram is afraid of humans and her father promises to fight her fears for her. As they sleep, a hole magically opens between the two upside-down worlds. Martina and Anitram let their arms slip over the edge of the bed, and they join hands. With this act of friendship, the girl and the little monster overcome their fear of the unknown and discover how much they have in common. The gentle cartoon illustrations feature dark outlines and a soft blue and pink bedtime palette. Martina, in her striped pajamas and pigtails, is a darling character, and Anitram is cute and cuddly. VERDICT Pair this debut picture book with Josh Schneider's equally imaginative Bedtime Monsters (Clarion, 2013).—Linda L. Walkins, Saint Joseph Preparatory High School, Boston, MA

Review "On its surface, Balmes' tale functions as a nothing-to-be-afraid-of bedtime story, with recognizable fears embellished by one girl's particular imagination. But the story also works as a deeper metaphor for looking past the 'other' to see common humanity." Booklist (online), April 24, 2015"Martina, in her striped pajamas and pigtails, is a darling character, and Anitram is cute and cuddly." School Library Journal, February 1, 2015"Lyona's pink and blue monsters are even cuter than Martina, and the book's sweetly conceived conclusion (not to mention the pair of warmhearted fathers, human and monster) will calm any nervous bed-goer." Publishers Weekly, January 9, 2015"After Anitram is reassured by her own father, she falls asleep as well, leading to a beautiful moment when the two characters' hands meet through the imagined hole in the floor." Kirkus Reviews, January 15, 2015

It has many grammatical and spelling errors! The information is vague and repetitive, with not enough specific tips about how to navigate the process. Very disappointing.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not helpful By Sara J I couldn't get past page 2. I can't take this book or the information it contains seriously. There are so many grammatical errors that I had to stop reading on page 2. Thank goodness this was a free kindle download. If I had paid for this I would have been pissed. No pun intended. Well maybe a little.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Think before you act By Grady Harp Author Efrat Haddi, with excellent support from illustrator Abira Das, has written a fine little story about the value of not relying on luck, and the clever way she tells the story makes it remarkable and memorable for children. Efrat Haddi obviously understands children (she is a mother of 3!) as well as the techniques of teaching children concepts through stories. This is a very well written and illustrated book that should become a favorite bedtime story - with a lesson. This is our third adventure with Troy the monkey who mother teaches him he must think before he acts and not rely solely on his luck! But of course Troy the Lucky Monkey would rather rely on his luck. He comes across a good luck necklace and thinking as long as he wears the necklace he will have gook luck, he encounters some situations with other animals - a giraffe whose back becomes Troy's slide and a skunk who spray misses Troy, a herd of wildebeest who offer a dangerous ride, a rhino who is angry with coconuts Troy throws from a tree - all adventures Troy sees as luck until they all reverse and Troy has bad events accompanying the same animals. His mother nurses the injured Troy and reminds him that he shouldn't rely on the luck (or a gold necklace) but always be careful and think before he acts. Lessons learned and Lucky Monkey finds pleasure in thinking before acting. The story has Efrat's trademark fine writing and sensitivity to teaching children by entertaining them and Abira's delightful illustrations making us hope that there will be a Lucky Monkey 4 coming soon. Really adorable and my 3 year old finds it funny. Its the typical putting a toddler to bed routine ... funny to read about a robot doing it too. Put this on my list for the next time we need a gift idea for a little boy.

Out and About: A First Book of Poems, by Shirley Hughes

From Publishers Weekly The British author-artist's new entry in the Nursery Collection will captivate parents and children, as do all her inimitable celebrations of family life. Bright, exuberantly detailed paintings illustrate rhyming lines featuring a small girl and her wobbly baby brother as they experience the special features of the passing seasons. The book begins with the siblings throwing themselves wholeheartedly into glorious mud on the first spring day. Later, the two join in communal activities as neighbors are all "out and about": the kids play; grown-ups plant gardens and spruce up their houses. In the same inviting vein, the story continues into summer, fallwith a harvest of fruits, nuts, berries as just "desserts"and snowy winter, crowned by Christmas. A lovely book. Ages 3-7. Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—Shirley Hughes fans will be excited to see this book back in print. Readers will delight in following Katie and her baby brother Olly through the four seasons. Four to five short, rhythmic poems are grouped together by season. Each season and group of poems is prefaced by a wordless spread that begs for readers to spend time pondering the stories and poems. These busy illustrations are full of community, action, and mystery and appropriately match each season. Strong, descriptive vocabulary is used throughout. For example, the poems "Mudlarks," "Water," "Sand," and "Wind" each follow a similar structure: they all open and close in the same way ("I like mud" and "I do like mud"), but in between those simple lines is juicy, descriptive vocabulary ("the slippy, sloppy, squelchy kind") that paints a picture in readers' minds. An author's note from Hughes also encourages readers to use the illustrations to form their own stories and poems. From the nostalgic watercolor illustrations to the science-themed poems, this is sure to be a favorite read-aloud among educators and a lapsit with families.—Andy Plemmons, David C. Barrow Elementary, Athens, GA

Review Sweeter and emotionally safer verse for the very young comes from the prolific British writer and illustrator Shirley Hughes. "Out and About: A First Book of Poems" is full of breezes and sunshine.—The Wall Street JournalThis first book of poems is perfect for reading aloud and for a search through the pictures for lively kids, dogs, squirrels and birds.—Washington ParentHughes’s pen-and-watercolor illustrations, the stars of this show, are deliciously full of motion...her approach is gentle, humorous, old-fashioned, full of human character.—The Boston Globe

I wanted recently to buy two copies, one for each granddaughter and lo, it is out of print. Furthermore, I have listed it in the books for children section of the yet-to-be published 7th edition of -Science Experiences for the Early Childhood Year. And I read it to my classes. I hope it comes out in paperback!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Excellent read-aloud book By A Customer Shirley Hughes wrote this with a musical ear for language. It is presently my hands-down favorite for reading to my two-year old. It is writing that adults can appreciate for almost haiku-like grace, and that appreciation can be passed on to the youngest readers. The illustrations match the poems superbly, and there are four mural-like double-page spreads, one for each season, that are each pictures the child can wander about visually, and I have had long talks with my son about what he sees in these pictures. An almost ideal children's book in my opinion.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Excellent children's poetry with beautiful illustrations By A Customer This book makes a fabulous addition to any children'slibrary ages 3-8. My daugthers, 4 and 7, love the detailedbeautiful illustations and the poems that walk through the seasons. A great combination of 'picture book' for the youngest and a great first reader for the older set.

Wumbers, by Amy Krouse Rosenthal

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2-Rosenthal and Lichtenheld team up again to craft an inspired picture book that encourages cre8tive wordplay. Starting on the endpapers with questions in speech bubbles ("What do you think you'll be like as 18ager?") and continuing through a series of conversations in double-page vignettes, Rosenthal cleverly combines words and numbers ("wumbers") that challenge readers to use their number recognition and phonological skills. Once children grasp the "ba6," they will have a "s2pendous" time figuring out the captions. From a boy and girl enjoying their "10ts" to the smiling child who is "el8ed" because he lost his first "2th," Lichenheld's ink and pastel coloring-book-style drawings supply visual clues to decoding the text. Wumbers takes the concept behind text-messaging shorthand and repurposes it into an interactive read-aloud that both kids and grown-ups can enjoy.-Martha Simpson, Stratford Library Association, CTα(c) Copyright 2011. 8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A fun concept, but it needs a story. By James Korsmo Wumbers is almost a really great children's book. The concept of replacing part or all of a word with a number is a fun one. It helps kids reflect on what letters and numbers do in a playful way. And for my pre-readers, it helped them "sound out" some simple words like "4t", since they can "read" a number easier than they can "read" a collection of letters, so it has great potential as an aid to literacy. But in its execution, I thought Wumbers falls short, primarily because it has no story. Each spread is a disconnected scene in which various characters (the cast of characters changes throughout the book as well) have a brief conversation. These episodes have no connection to one another, so it is really like reading a series of independent comic strips, not a continuous story. I enjoyed the illustrations, which are fun and colorful, and some of the episodes are fun or humerous. But my main feeling was one of disappointment at what could have been. I loved E-mergency!, a spectacular book about the role of letters couched in a fun and clever story about an injury to the letter E. And with the same illustrator doing the images in this one, I was excited to give it a try. But it just didn't measure up. It's still a decent book, and I like the concept, but it cries out for a story.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. fun word play with numbers By Jimmie Lanley This picture book is a lot of fun. It's based on the idea that you can replace certain sounds in words with their sound alike number equivalents. So investigate becomes investig8; tooth becomes 2th, and so on.For a skilled reader, it takes a bit of a mind shift to be able to read this book. I imagine it would be really fun with a child who can recognize numbers but can't read well yet. You, the adult, can read the story and point at the number for the child to read outloud. The two of you can decipher it together. My teenager says it is great for giving her texting tips. I'm not sure how often she will be texting words like enligh10ment or longi2ude, but the principles are the same. That is something I appreciate about the book. Many of the words are more advanced vocabulary words like elate (el8), intense (in10se)contentment (con10tment). That makes this perfect for enjoying with little children. They learn the meanings in the context of adult interaction and the illustrations in the book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wumbers didn't wow me or my kiddos. By Christie Cute idea, but the delivery could have been better. I look for books that will encourage my children to read. Wumbers left even my advanced seven-year-old reader frustrated because several of the "wumbers" just didn't flow. I even found myself stumbling while reading. I actually chose this title for my 5 year old. It was way too hard for her. Also a consistent set of characters from beginning to end would have been nice. Instead the story was compiled of two page "quickies" (not sure what else to call them) over the course of the book. We had everything from a family on a picnic to a penguin wedding. The plot continuously jumping from a different setting and characters every two pages, paired with the awkward "wumber" dialogue just made the book too difficult to enjoy. The illustrations were ok, but nothing extraordinary. All in all I'm really disappointed with Wumbers and after having such high hopes that is a serious bummer

Girls cannot be drummers. Long ago on an island filled with music, no one questioned that rule—until the drum dream girl. In her city of drumbeats, she dreamed of pounding tall congas and tapping small bongós. She had to keep quiet. She had to practice in secret. But when at last her dream-bright music was heard, everyone sang and danced and decided that both girls and boys should be free to drum and dream.         Inspired by the childhood of Millo Castro Zaldarriaga, a Chinese-African-Cuban girl who broke Cuba's traditional taboo against female drummers, Drum Dream Girl tells an inspiring true story for dreamers everywhere.

Drum Dream Girl: How One Girl's Courage Changed Music, by Margarita Engle

From School Library Journal Gr 1–4—Engle's spare, rhythmic text gets at the heart of the struggle to achieve a dream in this picture-book biography about a Chinese African Cuban girl who aspired to play drums even when society's double standards stood as a barrier. Growing up in tempestuous 1930s Havana, during a time when universities were often shut down because of their opposition to the dictatorial President Machado, Millo Castro Zaldarriaga dared to dream of playing percussion instruments—timbales, congas, bongós—but her father was adamant that "only boys should play drums." But still she persisted in her hopes and eventually, with the help of her sisters and music teacher, became a member of the renowned Anacaona, Cuba's first all-girl dance band, founded by her sister, Cuchito Castro. López's zinging, neon-tinged art highlights the island's diversity, depicting the drum girl's flights of fancy set against the backdrop of carnival scenes and outdoor cafes. Details of Cuba's and the protagonist's Chinese, African, Taíno, and Spanish roots are seamlessly interwoven into the lyrical narrative and luminous acrylic paintings. The alliterative text parallels the snappy syncopation of the subject's instruments. The heroine's tenacity in the face of naysayers will inspire all dreamers, and the illustrator's smile-inducing cameo on the last page emphasizes the universality of Millo's story. For those looking for more nonfiction titles about female musical powerhouses, such as Monica Brown's My Name Is Celia/Me llamo Celia (Cooper Square, 2004), Katheryn Russell-Brown's Little Melba and Her Big Trombone (Lee & Low, 2014), and Carole Boston Weatherford's Leontyne Price: Voice of a Century (Knopf, 2014). An author's note gives more background on the groundbreaking percussionist. —Shelley Diaz, School Library Journal

By Dione Basseri In early 20th century Cuba, drumming was something for only boys and men. This book tells of Millo Castro Zaldarriaga, a girl so enamored of the drums that she even managed to change her own father's mind, getting lessons and becoming the first well-known female drummer in Cuba, and the one to open the way for all girls after her to have the chance. The artwork in this book blends strong outlines and smooth shading, as well as somewhat cartoonish expressions of humans. There's also a strong presence of nature in each image, calling upon Cuba's diverse ecology. Even the night-time scenes are given life, making this a rather energetic book. The book ends with a little blurb on the real drummer girl, which gives enough information to hopefully allow readers to find some music from the girl on YouTube or on music sites. You'll definitely want to pull some music up after reading this, to add to the educational value and, hey. Music! My only real complaint is the second instance of a "sideways" page, which is a little pet peeve of mine in children's books, which I've noticed appearing more lately. The first image sent sideways, making one tall page, is of a stilt walker, and that's a good use of the space. The second is of the girl looking up at a caged drum, and the image would have done just as well being wide, instead of tall. But, as my said, that's my only complaint, and it's just something I dislike. While I do give it five stars, keep in mind that not every kid is going to want a copy of their own at home. Check it out from your library, and if they keep for asking it, make the purchase. Public libraries, however, would be well advised to make sure there's a copy on the shelves.

By Sean Bacon I thought the text and illustrations worked together in an incredible way to teach an important lesson about believing in your dreams. The rich textures and colors and ideas make the images soar. Love the vertical page with dancers in masks on stilts and the haunting jungle scene where she plays to imaginary animals and even the moon. I teach art and the concepts like a drum with wings and surrealistic style made both my niece and I smile. Simply fantastic illustrations by Rafael López add even more magic to the poetic words in this bold, bright picture book biography.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Follow your dreams! By Janet Hamilton Summary: Millo Castro Zaldarriaga, a Chinese-African-Cuban girl growing up in 1930’s Cuba, dreamed of playing drums. But only boys were allowed to be drummers. She kept dreaming, though, and practicing any way she could, until finally her father allowed her to take drum lessons. By the age of 15, she was good enough to play at President Franklin Roosevelt’s birthday celebration, and she went on to perform with many of the great jazz players of the time.Pros: This is really a poem inspired by the story of Zaldarriaga. It’s a celebration of following your dream, illustrated with eye-popping neon colors that perfectly capture the celebrations and street cafes where Millo hears the music she loves.Cons: You’ll need to give some context for kids to understand what this book is about. The historical note at the end is a good place to start.
