There's nothing to do on a rainy day or so Ally thinks. But Mama says she's seen something amazing, so despite Ally's misgivings, she sets out on an adventure with her mother and grandmother. On her journey, she sees all sorts of things: dripping awnings, wet cardboard, splashing cars...but also earthworms, storm drain geysers, and oil slick patterns. And then they turn the corner, just in time to see a big crowd. What's happening?

Toad Weather, by Sandra Markle

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—It's a rainy March afternoon with end-of-the-day, gray light when Ally and her grandmother are surprised by Mama, who excitedly bursts through the door. Encouraged to join her in the "nearly-nighttime," the three move quickly through cold rain, searching the streets for a special surprise promised by Mama. A sound like tiny whistles gets louder and louder through the "drippy, slowing-down rain" before they turn the corner and spot a sign: TOAD DETOUR. For only a few weeks each spring in the Roxborough neighborhood of Philadelphia, PA, the toads head to ponds and a nearby reservoir to mate and lay eggs. Photo-realistic illustrations in pastel and pencil on watercolor paper capture a unique experience on full pages and spreads as residents gather to assist the yearly migration of hundreds of toads moving with determination toward water. Faces express the wonder of walking through "the dripping, freshly-washed, after-the-toad-weather city," and an author's note clarifies the scientific details. VERDICT An appealing seasonal selection for most libraries.—Mary Elam, Learning Media Services, Plano ISD, TX

Review "Gonzalez's colorful illustrations, almost photo-realistic yet shimmering with rainy-day mystery, add excitement to an already engrossing story." --The New York Times"Gonzalez's illustrations lovingly capture the wet reflections of galoshes, glowing street lights, and shadows in aqueous watercolor washes, and the rows of toads leaping through the grass are awfully cute." ----Booklist"A fine addition to the sense-of-wonder shelf." ----Kirkus Reviews

About the Author Sandra Markle is the author of more than two hundred children's books, which have won numerous awards, including Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor Book, IRA/CBC Children's Choice, NSTA/CBC Outstanding Trade Books for Children, NCTE Orbis Pictus Recommended, and ALA Notable Books for Children.

By Wayne A McCoy 'Toad Weather' takes the premise of a rainy day, and a real event, and brings us an adventure that can happen on an ordinary day. The illustrations are a wonderful addition and make this a treat for children and the adults sharing the story with them.Little Ally is bored on a rainy day, but her mom wants her to see something amazing. Grandmother is a little more reluctant to go traipsing around in the rain. Outside the ciyt is transformed into glistening streets and the sound of raindrops on different objects. As they walk through the city another sound grows louder and they see a large crowd. This is what Mama wants to show them. What could it be?Based on a real life event that happens, it's a wonderful take on the kind of magic that happens all around us that we usually take for granted. As Ally views the city in the rain, we see it with fresh eyes. The story by Sandra Markle is great, and the illustrations by Thomas Gonzalez are beautiful renditions of the things that Ally sees with splashing raindrops and shimmering reflections on streets and sidewalks. I was drawn to this book by the cover, and was very pleased with the art and story I found within.I received a review copy of this ebook from Peachtree Publishers and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this beautiful children's ebook.

Ally and her grandma find rainy days gloomy, but then Ally's mother takes them out on a little rainy-day adventure...rescuing the migrating toads from the road and helping them get to their destination. A unique story, and very well told....it must be hard for writers of picture books to come up with something different, there's a lot of children's literature out there, and if your kids like to read, there will be plenty of times when you choose a book that turns out to be same-old-seen-it-before. Toad Weather stands out from the crowd. Add to that the absolutely beautiful illustrations by Thomas Gonzalez (they appear to be watercolor and ink and they are stunning!), even when you're not reading aloud, children who are too young to try to read the words themselves will enjoy paging through the beautiful pictures...,.and if you happen to like toads (we do, and they're all over the neighborhood in spring) you'll like it even more!Highly recommended....and I wasn't even given a free copy by anyone in exchange for my honest review :) This book would make a terrific gift for the preschooler or young gradeschooler in your life.

This book had all that and more.I like how the book pointed out the things we probably see every day but never give them a second thought. It makes life more interesting. Don't you think? What was really great was finding out about a real annual event that happens during migration season for toads. However, I can not divulge that as it will give away the crux of this book. The author does write about this at the end of the book. The illustrations were realistic which added to the book and simply makes for a great read.I give this book 4 stars.Disclosure: I was given a Kindle copy of this book for my open and honest opinion. The views expressed here are 100% my own and may differ from yours. ~Naila Moon

It's obvious that the author was scholarly with her background information and in love with her tale By Cindy Rittenhouse I don't often stay up any more until I finish a book, but I did with this. So much to learn about Irish mythology richly presented by characters with whom we bond so quickly. It's obvious that the author was scholarly with her background information and in love with her tale. All this woven into a colorfully layered tapestry of a large, tumbling, innately and insanely curious family. I felt the story was for all ages.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Intriguing By Prairie House This is an intriguing story and a real page turner. There are a couple of reasons I didn't give it five stars. There are some proofreading errors. Also, some of the feelings and thoughts of Fianna and the other characters are repeated too often, as if the reader is going to forget their motivations. And the frequent change of point of view can be confusing. But the characters are great and the descriptions excellent.

The storyline and mythos are rich and engaging and the plot flows perfectly. There's a great mix of drama, suspense, and humor. An intriguing and exciting read!

I'm not native English speaker, and I learn English with books for children.I bought Japanese version already, it was so simple line. I love this one! Japanese book deleted Anna's words so much. But this one, Anna's words was so lively and cute.I wonder if Elsa didn't use her icy magic on her sister in this book. Because Anna looked sweaty and pushed her sweaty hear off her face. And last line was kind of suspicious...I don't know.Olaf is usual happy-go-lucky-go snowman. He was so cute, too.

Children's Poets Laureate J. Patrick Lewis and Kenn Nesbitt team up to offer a smart, stealthy tour of the creatures of shadowy myth and fearsome legend—the enticing, the humorous, and the strange. Bigfoot, the Mongolian Death Worm, and the Loch Ness Monster number among the many creatures lurking within these pages. Readers may have to look twice—the poems in this book are disguised as street signs, newspaper headlines, graffiti, milk cartons, and more!

Bigfoot is Missing!, by J. Patrick Lewis, Kenn Nesbitt

From School Library Journal Gr 2–6—An entertaining take on a naturally interesting subject, this title pairs comic book-style art with poems on cryptozoology. The term is defined in a blurb on the first page, while the last few pages include a useful description of creatures such as the Beast of Bodmin Moor, the Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp, and the Mongolian Death Worm. Not quite concrete poems, these selections integrate text and design with creative results. Though the illustrations vary, all are rendered in graphic style. The Kraken, Gambo, and Lusca are presented as entries circled in red pen from the classified section of the Davy Jones Dispatch: "Free to a Good Home: Baby Luscas (Half Octopus, Half Shark)." Similarly, the poem about the Chupacabra is a marked-up "Wanted" poster, while images of "Moth-Away" spray accompany the poem on the Mothman. Though some selections are more informative than others, all are vivid, dynamic, and fun. VERDICT A great choice, ideal for group sharing and browsers alike.—Heather Talty, formerly at Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School, New York City

A fun, clever poetry book By Janet Hamilton Summary: Each two-page spread features a creature from the files of cryptozoology (creatures rumored to exist, but which have never been scientifically documented). The actual animal isn’t shown in full, just a part or hint of it, with something reporting a sighting in the form of a poem. For instance, Bigfoot’s entry includes a milk carton with this verse: “Missing/Last seen: walking in the forest/Height and weight: much more than you/Gender: unknown/Hair: all over/Shoe size (Rumored): 92”. The first page tells about cryptozoology, and the endpapers include a list of all the creatures in the book with a brief description of each. Grades 2-6.Pros: This is one clever book, and the topic is sure to be popular with young readers, who will want to spend some time studying the illustrations. A fun and easy introduction to poetry by two former children’s poet laureates.Cons: If you get this book out of the library (which you should), the creatures’ descriptions on the endpapers are partially covered by a taped-down book jacket

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Something is Missing anyway By J. Wiles Parker I enjoyed looking at Bigfoot is Missing! The book layout and the illustrations are wonderfully rendered by MinaLima so that you get a sense of what the poetry is going to be about just from looking at the pages. I wasn't so enamored with the 'poems' since they often felt overly vague and weren't always really poems, but strange descriptions. The idea behind the book is really interesting as it's supposed to be poems about Cryptids. However, the execution was sometimes lacking and not always fun or easy to figure out. Thankfully more information is available about the included Cryptids in the end papers, but I would have liked more of that information reflected in the writing. Still, you get a sense of the mysterious nature of the creatures from the illustrations and that, at least, makes the book worth looking at.

By This Kid Reviews Books Why I liked this book- I know this book won’t be released until later this month, but put it on your list for poetry month in April. What better way to get kids into reading poetry? The authors are both Children’s Poet Laureates and their expertise in their craft shines through. The poems are short, fun to read and they are about a cool topic -cryptids! Kids are going to love them. The illustrations have a comic book feel to them to add to the kid friendliness of the book. I found this book a blast to read. As an older kid, I enjoyed all the information and back-story in the front and back parts of the book. The colorful illustrations bring the whole thing together.*NOTE* I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

For a young lad like Mike Pannett, growing up in the North Yorkshire countryside in the late 1960s and early ’70s was a dream come true. The sun always seemed to be shining, the summer holidays lasted forever, and when you were sent to buy a fish supper for the family there was change to be had from that crumpled pound note. They really were the good old days. Given a fishing rod, a bottle of pop and a jam sandwich, a lad could wander as far as his bike would take him, and the countryside was one big adventure playground peopled by larger-than-life characters and endless opportunities for laughs and larks. Like many a boy, however, Mike learns things the hard way. He goes on a bike ride and lands up in A&E. He tries to be helpful around the home – and nearly burns the place down. And when he goes on a fishing trip it almost ends with a shipwreck. He’s a likely lad, is Mike, and these are his likely tales.

About the Author

Mike Pannett was born in York, and joined the Metropolitan Police in 1988. He became one of the youngest officers to be given his own patch, and served on the Divisional Crime Squad, Murder Squad and TSG (Riot Police). He transferred to North Yorkshire police in 1997 as he missed the countryside – and fly fishing! He became a rural beat officer and eventually, a wildlife officer. Mike served nearly twenty years in the police, during which he became one of the highest-commended officers. In 2005 he starred in the BBC’s Country Cops and was inspired to write about his adventures in the North Yorkshire force. He lives with his wife Ann and their three children in a small village in the shadow of the North York Moors.

Black Elk's Vision: A Lakota Story, by S. D. Nelson

From School Library Journal Starred Review. Grade 3–6—Born in 1863, Black Elk, an Oglala-Lakota medicine man, was warned from an early age to beware the "Wha-shi-choo," or white people, and for good reason. By the time he was 16, his people had been attacked on their lands, fought at the Battle of the Little Bighorn, and been confined to grim reservations, their way of life forever changed. Told in a first-person narrative, this handsome biography is adorned with vibrant acrylic paintings that depict the mystical images (spirit voices and visions) that Black Elk first experienced as a child. A fever vision at age nine, in which he met with the six grandfathers, the ancestral beings, proved to be a pivotal experience for him. As a teenager, he ultimately led a Horse Dance ceremony in which he brought a message of hope and instruction to his people. In addition to his respected tribal status, his involvement in many landmark events, from his travels with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show to being injured at the Wounded Knee massacre, makes him a unique historical figure. Aptly chosen photographs (some of which are graphic images of buffalo carcasses and a scene of a mass grave at Wounded Knee) provide accurate historical perspective. An author's note on understanding his Great Vision and background information on the book are included. This is an important contribution to Native biography.—Madeline J. Bryant, Los Angeles Public Library (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

From Booklist *Starred Review* This handsomely designed, large-format book tells the story of Black Elk (1863–1950), a Lakota man who saw many changes come to his people. In this first-person, present-tense account, Black Elk says that as a nine-year-old boy, he is blessed with a Great Vision. At 12, he fights in the Battle of Little Bighorn. After traveling in Europe with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show and, later, experiencing the massacre at Wounded Knee, he retreats to a reservation, where he holds his vision in his heart and offers it to others. Often quoting from Black Elk Speaks (1932), Nelson makes vivid the painful ways life changed for the Lakota in the 1800s, and throughout he questions how Black Elk’s vision, which explains that humans must realize they are living in a circle of supportive life, juxtaposes against harsh reality. It is a question readers will ponder as well. Colorful, imaginative artwork, created using pencils and acrylic paints, is interspersed with nineteenth-century photos, underscoring that this dramatic account reflects the experiences of a man who witnessed history. Back matter includes an extensive author’s note, a detailed time line, source notes, and a source bibliography. A helpful, attractive map on the endpapers frames this unusual presentation. Grades 5-8. --Carolyn Phelan

A solid addition to collections of Native American tales and an enjoyable read-aloud." School Library Journal "Nelson pulls it off with his confident style as a storyteller . . . polished illustrations . . . informative, well written." Kirkus Reviews

I can tell that S.D. was teacher, in addition to being an artist and a storyteller. It's really my kind of book - it combines actual history/photos with evocative illustrations of the spirit world, the world of dreams, and prophecy. It's simply a beautiful book with all the right reference aides and resources for young readers. I love the color palette ... in the mystical drawings. S.D. is also true to his Lakota legacy - a reader can see the influence of ledger drawings. The book teaches young readers, but it's not like 'work' - and Lakota children can see many layers of meaning in it from their cultural heritage. I appreciate a book that is beautiful as well as informative. Interesting on many levels. Well done, Mr. Nelson.

A masterful picture book retelling of the life and vision of Black Elk By Midwest Book Review "Black Elk's Vision" is a masterful picture book retelling of the life and vision of Black Elk, Oglala-Lakota holy man (1863-1950). Told in Black Elk's own words, "Black Elk's Vision" describes the experiences of the young Native American who witnessed the massive influx of the Wha-shi-choos (white men) along with the slaughter of the buffalo and a resulting change of lifestyle for the Lakota, gathered from their vast hunting territories onto much smaller reservations. These were dark days for Black Elk and his people, but his youthful visions remained strong enough for him to imprint a new ideal to help his people and ultimately all people grasp the significance of their part in the vast Circle of Life. black Elk's Vision is further enhanced by the inclusion of classic photograph montages of archetype images of Black Elk and his world, a timeline, a bibliography, an index, and the incredibly beautiful artwork of S. D. Nelson, member of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe of the Dakotas, equally "fluent in both narrative and illustrations." "Black Elk's Vision" is likely to be more accessible to children age 10 and older, but younger children may be drawn to it also.

Presently, some of the books that are available and a popular read for young people, in my judgement, don't have the integrity of well written literature or subject matter. BLACK ELK'S VISION by S.D. Nelson is beautifully written and illustrated. It has been thoroughly researched and emphasizes those positive qualities of love and respect for family, history, and other cultures. Thank you, Mr. Nelson, for writing and illustrating a book worthy of my grandson's reading time and, furthermore, giving him an authentic insight into a world that he is just beginning to explore. He will love it!

Corrupt, decayed and... hungry, it waits only for some careless hand to set its evil free once more... In the Jungles of the Gods... In the Jungles of the Gods is a short story that unfolds in the same universe as the Solenne series, but with entirely different characters. By Don Kidwell ...but instead a horror beyond all our imagining, roused from centuries of quiescence." Well-written zombie short with adequately 'fleshed' out characters and a twist that alternates between the ongoing ''chase' and the intro to the expedition of the Indian temple until eventually the two separate events join together on the same time line. One more passage to get the 'juices' flowing, "Tracking its progress through the sky is impossible whilst I'm moving, and I must keep moving lest they find me...There's no way around it." An engaging horror book that I did like!

Even though the title says teach yourself iPhone 6s, it has little info that's specific to the 6s or 6s Plus, or even to iOS 9. I wonder if the authoring team simply took the previuos edition and just updated a little, instead of writing a real book about either the 6s model line, or about iOS 9. For instance, I wanted to learn more about 3D Touch, but it's not covered here at all. A short introduction on p.7 refers you to the publisher's website, but there is no info as of today, about 3D Touch either on the book product page, or anywhere on the Wiley website! This is unacceptable. The author, in the least, could have set up his own webpage for this and other updated topics. Interesting topics like Apple Watch are given only brief coverage.Like other Visually titles, the book is in color and well laid out and covers the basics of iPhone usage. It just feels outdated, since there's little about hte new models or new system. There are also typos here and there that can confuse readers.

The reason I mention this is that I literally had gotten home after buying the 6S and an hour later looked in my list of potential books I could request to review....and here this was. Big Brother at the phone store? Anyhow I clicked on accept to review this book and I'm so glad I did. The differences between the 4S/5S and the 6S are subtle, but can affect the efficiency of using the 6S.This book is for a visual learner and I like that there isn't a lot of copy muddying up a simple explanation. I generally don't sync with iTunes so I skipped that chapter and went straight to 2 about personalizing your iPhone. The pictures are comprehensive and easy to follow. Although you can personalize your phone by clicking on every icon in the settings yourself, this allows you to scan the settings and pick and choose the ones that are pertinent to whatever you want to do.Much of the book us simplistic and if you have had iPhones you probably don't need to read the whole thing, but the lovely advantage is you can easily page through the book without having to read a lot of verbiage and choose the bits and pieces that you will find helpful. For instance I didn't realize you could tighten up Safari's security, something I've worried about...and voila the explanation of how to do it is simple and easy to implement.I have never used the calendar feature of the iPhone, but decided with this one to do so. Easy to follow explanations and directions were extremely helpful in order to maximize your efficiency in using it and incorporating it in your life. There is also a nice explanation of the camera, its features, how to edit and enhance photos that I really appreciated since I upgraded the phone primarily for the camera! The only thing I didn't find an answer for was a little issue I'm having. I kept the iPad with one service provider and changed to another with the iPhone. And some of the calls come in both on the iPhone and on FaceTime on the iPad. :) Oh well...that is for another day to figure out.

Good visual learning guide but not much different from previous edition By Amazon Customer This is a good visual learning guide to iPhone 6S and iOS 9 in general. Comparing to the previous edition, this guide hasn't been updated much. That being said, if you are new to the iPhone and iOS, you'll most likely find this guide helpful to you. It covers the basics of operating an iPhone and the iOS, such as getting your way around to the various iOS functions and features, and to the built-in apps. As for iPhone 6S specific topics, including the new 3D touch feature, they are few and far between. There are only half a dozen pages on the iPhone 6S models and hardware. The rest are about the iOS 9, which is the gut of this visual learning guide. This guide is task-oriented and easy to follow. Each task has a specific goal with step-by-step instructions and accompanying screenshots such that you may follow them visually. There are also task related tips scattered across the book, which are very handy.Overall, this is a good visual learning guide. If you are new to the iPhone and iOS, this book is for you. If you already have the previous edition of this book, you may want to skip this book since there aren't many new stuff added to it.

The drawings take up nearly the entire page on the Kindle without using the Zoom. They are all colorful and portray this meat ball craving monster accurately! And, more important, the text rhymes and the little ones will love this story. The monster's favorite (only?) food is meatballs and he has the villagers making them for him. They are afraid of the monster. One day, a little girl approaches the monster and asks why he can't make his own meatballs. He agrees and she shows him how to make them. The beginning of a friendship for both of them. And, the villagers are happy and not afraid of him anymore.I like this story as it shows that even though the monster was really good at making meatballs, he did not brag about it. And, of course the courage of the little girl is so important. How many girls would dare approach a monster? Well, she had a plan and her plan worked out well. Most highly recommended.

She liked the story and so did I. The story was cute and it incorporated the important age old lesson that if you teach someone to fish, you have fed them/they will eat for a lifetime, whereas if you simply give someone a fish, you have fed them/they will only eat for only one day.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. To all, eat a meatball By Guy with Beard A monster terrorizes a village. The villagers have to make the monsters meatballs by the cartload and have no time to do anything else. Then a brave little girl teaches the monster how to make his own meatballs. Everyone wins.I like the basic messages of the story. You should talk out your problems. Also, you should learn to do for yourself instead of relying on everyone else to do it for you.The only negatives is that some of the rhymes seemed forced and the artwork did not appeal to me all that much.I would rate this as 3.5 stars. I wouldn't have a problem recommending it.

What can you do when the society you live in isn’t as good and grand as people want you to believe? For Emma, Leia, and Justa, there is only one way to survive – by being defiant.Three young adult authors from the Netherlands use their storytelling talents to explore worlds where nothing is as it seems and no one is truly safe. The Red MessengerSome things are better left unsaid – or unquestioned. When Emma finds a mysterious note in a coat that once belonged to her twin sister Sophia, the words written on it won’t leave her alone: “The Angel has come”. Angels are a part of forbidden folklore, remnants of the old Jewish religion that was banned by the Realm long ago. Sophia had secrets she never shared with Emma, and they demand to be unraveled. Now, Emma’s quest will change her world forever. The IslandLeia lives on the Island, where children leave their parents to take care of themselves when they are only ten years old. Across this Island runs a wall that no one has ever crossed. No one wants to – because the Fools living in the west, behind the wall, are deluded and believe in illusions. That’s what The Book says, the only thing left to the Eastern Islanders by their ancestors. But when a strange man washes ashore and Leia meets a Fool face to face, her life will never be the same. Is what she and her friends believe about the Island really true? The TribunalWhen Justa is summoned for jury duty in the Tribunal, she is sure of one thing: she needs to stick to the rules in order to get her best friend’s murderer convicted. In her society, jurisdiction is infallible. The choice ahead of her seems clear – but soon, Justa is forced to choose between justice and lies. Will she use her head over her heart, or will Aron, the accused who dares to look at her with such disdain in his eyes, change her mind for good?

Brilliant as individual novellas and brilliant as a collection By Amazon Customer INITIAL THOUGHTSI heard about this collection via Jen Minkman whose books I have read before. I had already read and reviewed The Island but was instantly interested in reading the other two books in this collection. Jen Minkman has actually translated the other two titles in this collection into English. I also love the dystopian genre so reading this collection was a must!MY REVIEWI received a free e-copy of this book from Jen Minkman in exchange for my honest review. This book is a collection of three short story/novella books. The cover depicts harsh looking terrain with barbed wire representing being caged or imprisoned, with the brightly coloured butterfly representing hope and the possibility of freedom. Would the cover make me notice the book on a bookstore shelf enough to make me pick it up and want to learn more? Yes, the cover immediately interests me and gives the impression of the dystopian genre, which I am a fan of.The Red MessengerSo the first book in the collection is The Red Messenger by Mari Li. This story is set in the Germany, around the time the Aryan race were deemed the superior race, and the Jewish people were persecuted. The main character is Emma Petrova, we meet Emma as she is seriously considering throwing herself from an upstairs window so she can be with her sister who died in an accident recently. Sophia was Emma's twin sister, they live with their guardian and Uncle Peter Petrova and his own daughter, their cousin Lorelei. When Emma is going through her sister Sophia's clothes and belongings she holds up the bright red coat that Sophia was wearing when her "accident" happened. Emma discovers a scrap of paper with a name and an address on it, of someone she doesn't know. How did Sophia know this person and not her? Intrigued about who the mysterious person is and why her sister was visiting or planning to visit her? In an attempt to feel closer to her recently departed sister Emma decides to go to the address.Emma discovers a secret side of Sophia that she herself had not even glimpsed. As Emma becomes embroiled in seeing through her sisters last "mission" she desperately needs someone to confide in. Sadly she chooses to trust someone that doesn't deserve her trust. Emma is devastatingly betrayed by the very person that did the same to her sister. Emma is taken along with her new Jewish friends to a work camp. She undergoes the harsh realities of being Jewish or being a Jewish collaborator. The Red Messenger tells a little of the different stories of the Jewish citizens that have bee incarcerated in the camp at the same time as Emma. Will Emma live or perish in the camp as many around her are doing. How can she survive such harsh conditions when she was brought up in another world, of privilege and plenty. I also want to add that the title of the novella fits it perfectly. The writing style of the book and content reminded me a little of Prisoner of Night and Fog by Anne Blankman. So did I enjoy the first book in this collection? I really did, I was immediately pulled right into this book within the very first paragraph. Would I want to read more about the characters in this book? I would love to know more abut the journey that Emma and Uriah undertake near the end of the novella. Having said the story does have a natural end as you finish it so I am doubtful that this story is or may become part of a series.Would I want to read other titles by this author? I enjoyed the quite fast pace of this book and the descriptions and writing style, so I would take a look at any book written by this author. The IslandThe next book in this collection is The Island by Jen Minkman. As I said I have read this novella which is the first in a series of novella's that make up a trilogy written by Jen Minkman.(Since first reading this book some character names have been changed so my review has been adjusted/updates with the new character names)This book has been a really difficult one to review for me, as I loved Jen's other book Shadow's Of Time so had high expectations of this book The Island. The blurb gives a great description of the book, and would further entice me into wanting to read the book. This is the Author's first attempt at the dystopian genre and I have to say on the whole I did enjoy it. I loved the setting and basis of the story. The only thing I didn't like was the Star Wars references . .. I don't think they were really needed. To me they took the genre in a more quirky direction. I love the characters of Leia and Colin and the basic plot. the pace and writing style is great. The book really didn't need the quirkiness of the star wars references in any way. It was a much better book without those. The book in the story which connected the Star Wars references could have just been an ancient book with its own rules. The whole parents and virus theme was strong enough to stand alone without any of the Star Wars references. Had I known about the Star Wars references, I admit, I would have been put off reading it.So did I enjoy the novella? On the whole yes, I just think it could have been even better without certain references. Would I recommend the novella? Yes but more in a quirky dystopian genre than a recommendation to a straight dystopian fan. Would I read more dystopian by Jen Minkman? Definitely the roots of a fantastic story are there and I did enjoy the book. I do enjoy Jen's writing a lot. Would I want to read more about the characters in this novella? Yes I would. Would I read other work by Jen Minkman? Definitely, I would give anything Jen has written a go! I hope I have not offended her in my honest appraisal of her book,. I do not mean to be negative, I just felt the book could have been even better. The TribunalThis the final novella in the dystopian collection, The Tribunal by Lis Lucassen. This book is set in a typical dystopian society, with the "haves" and "have nots" in this case the "haves" are "Sectorials" and the "have nots" are called "Stateless". Apparently it is necessary to segregate the Stateless away and maintain order for the sectorial citizens. The main character in this book is a female named Justa. Justa has the regularity hair cut of a straight blonde bob, green eyes and freckles. Justa also has her number branded on the inner part of her right wrist. Just is quite simply like every other girl in the sector. Justa is sitting on her first "Tribunal", it is the trial for the murderer of Justa's best friend Irina. Irina was stabbed three times by a stateless male named Aron. Justa sits on the Tribunal with her friend Ernst and another female from the community by the name of Myrthe. It is automatically thought that the stateless male Aron is guilty as the "stateless" of limited intelligence and are known to behave like animals. So the trial should be straight forward right? Well no because Justa has an inner instinct that is telling her something is not right, that Aron did not kill her best friend Irina. Ernst and her guardian Marcus alsothe Arbiter (the one who questions the accused in the court) are quite patronising towards Justa asking if she can cope with her first "Tribunal", can she cope with the trial as it is the person that murdered her best friend. Justa insists she can manage but the more the trial goes on the more she feels that maybe Aron didn't murder Irina at all? Justa goes against what is expected of her from her fellow citizens and her guardian Marcus and genuinely attempts to give Aron an honest and fair hearing. Aron must sense this and manages to confide in Justa. . . .and that's all I am going to say about this one. I throughly enjoyed this novella too!So did I enjoy the last book in this collection? I really did, I was immediately pulled right into the dystopic society, and the biased tribunal that Aron is having. Would I want to read more about the characters in this book? I would love to know more about the society and characters featured in this book. I think it could be the introduction to a fantastic series! So yes I'd love more. Would I want to read other titles by this author? I enjoyed the society, setting and writing style, so I would certainly take a close at any book written by this author.FINAL THOUGHTSAll three books are well written, well translated and well thought out, and delivered brilliantly. On the whole I totally loved this dystopian collection, all three novella's left me wanting even more. Though all the books are dystopian, the societies featured in each of the books is quite different but each as enjoyable as each other. There is no weak book in this three they are all three fantastic books. I will be checking out the authors, and keeping my eyes open for any upcoming titles by any of these authors. Reading this collection was a dream collection to me as I do love the dystopian genre. So would I recommend this collection? YES!.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Collection Of Stories! By Tanya S. Defiant is a collection of three short stories, and each of them are really different. Overall, I liked all three stories, and I honestly can't pick a favorite. Each is about a girl, who is in for a big change. Honestly each was really good, and I wish there were more stories so I could find out what happens to them! I'll start with The Red Messenger. This was the first short story, and was really intriguing. The idea of the red coat and it's secret between the sisters was something I enjoyed, and each character was very well written. Uriah and Emma were a cute pair, but I was somewhat hoping for Emma to be a really spunky fight for herself kind of girl. Either way, I liked the story. The Island, the second story, is a bit more confusing. It's pretty obvious that it has to do with Star Wars, and that bugged me a bit, just because the concept of it confuses me. As much as it did boggle me, the story was interesting. I loved the idea of the 'Fools' and how she and Walt met. They're really cute together! Next, and finally, The Tribunal. This story was one of the ones that really intrigued me, as Justa's inner struggle was really interesting to watch. I definitely had to think about if I was in her place, and I was convicting a criminal, much less a criminal who killed my best friend. This definitely made me wonder if our court systems are biased, and yes, I know we swear an oath to no be biased, but what if we still are? Definitely a story that made me think. Overall, I liked all of these stories, and definitely recommend them!

By Léatitia Brière I was given an Arc and so this is my honnest review :I really enjoyed these three dystopian novella and was excited to read a collection including Jen Minkman's novella : The Island. I had read her book series and was happy to get to know new authors who write dystopian stories too.Defiant is a MUST READ of the dystopian genre !It's exactly the kind of book that gathers the best ingredients of a perfect dystopian novella. The themes are brilliant and well developed through the chapters. The three novellas have endearing, unforgettable and tough characters, beautiful, very smart and inspiring topics. The main characters and their stories are going to leave a mark on your mind and heart. You read about the meaning of freedom, the power of love and bravery, and the importance of believing you're capable of the best. These are short reads but it's filled up with intensity and thought provoking moments. Definitly a pager turner !This is exactly the kind of YA book you want your children to read and it's also great for adults who love History and dystopian universe as unique as it can be. It's beautifully written : intelligent, easy to understand but complex too.I loved them all, and would love to read more of Mara Li and Lis Lucassen' stories.Congratulations Jen for translating and thank you for giving me and everyone the chance to read Defiant in English.
