If your fate has already been chosen for you, would you change it?

Fifteen-year-old Arena Power blindly accepts her destiny in a world filled with tragedy, chaos, and a lingering wickedness that will tempt every man's soul until the last days on Earth. In the United States in the year 2053, America, like most of the world, has undergone catastrophic earthquakes, famine, and an economic collapse, which have rendered the nation hopeless. It has turned to other nations, like Russia and China, to help restore what was once a world power. Unfortunately, the new America has grossly caused civil unrest that will eventually be the precursor to a much bigger war of biblical proportions.

Orphaned at the age of nine, Arena and her twin brother, Gabe, have learned to rely on each other through the toughest times. Not only do they share the same birthday and the tragic loss of their parents, but they both have birthmarks on the backs of their necks in the shape of a crucifix. This is but a small sign of the destiny that will follow.

On their 15th birthday, they receive a mystery letter and key from their estranged uncle Finnegan. This key will unlock their fate, and it will be up to a priest who has vowed to protect them since birth to unfold the layers of their destiny - to undo the evil that has spoiled the world and to help unleash God's wrath upon those who have turned from him in the last days of history.

Last Light Falling weaves righteousness with evil, treachery with truth, and shows just how far the will of man can survive on faith alone. Arena and Gabriel's fate will determine a course of history that has already been written. They were not born to save the world; they were chosen to prepare it for the final days.

Plemons' "Last Light Falling: The Covenant" is a contemporary fiction novel about fifteen-year-old twins who have been destined to change the world. Other than the loss of their parents, Arena and Gabriel Power lead relatively normal lives with the same concern as other teens. When their fifteenth birthday arrives, they are most worried about high school starting soon. But they don't realize that they are to receive a letter and key that will send them on a journey toward their destiny, entailing preparing the world for its final days. I really enjoyed this book from start to finish. It has many elements that are in the dystopian YA books that are popular today, but it has a fresh feel to it. The two main characters work well as protagonists, and their unique personalities (one is sassy, one is geeky) make following them on their journey very engaging. The plot of the book starts at a moderate pace, but really gets going about a third of the way through the book. The writing in this book is top-notch -- descriptive, emotional, and compelling. I feel as though I felt everything Plemons wanted me to feel. Even his descriptions of day-to-day activities, such as sibling interactions, are spot-on. Overall, this is a darn good read that will make any fiction fan want more. Can't wait to read the next in the series!

Over the years you start to develop unique tastes and cravings that not every author can provide. You also learn many common threads (some people call them tropes or clichés) that the vast majority of authors repeat. And then... then you have books like this one, that surpass your every expectation.Set in a (sort of) post-apocalyptic setting in the United States of America, J.E. Plemons has crafted one of those rare treats, a novel that defies (and defines) an entire genre. Right from the start the author is able to sink their hooks into you and never let go for the entire wild ride. I found myself reading well into the twilight hours turning page after page, I couldn't put it down.Arena and her twin brother, Gabe, are fascinating characters that feel like real people. Their struggles in this fictional world are breath-taking and haunting; I had to physically remind myself to breath sometimes. I could not help but get heavily invested in these characters and their strangely familiar, yet alien world. The future depicted here is both simultaneously terrifying, yet beautiful in its own way. The author has obviously done their research on American history and is familiar with that old adage of "Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it". The story also plays with fate, destiny, and heritage, asking us to think about who we really are, and where we choose to go. Is this set in stone? Can it be changed? They say you can feel an author's passion in their works and I felt it here in spades. J.E. Plemons felt very strongly about this book and everything inside it. This level of emotion is sadly not common in modern novels, but there's no shortage of that here!Every time I get a good novel I tell myself to read it slowly, to take my time before it’s all gone. Every time I ignore that advice. I simply could not put it down and I cannot wait until the next one. While the story doesn't end on a major cliff hanger, there is just so much more to explore in the lives of these characters.

Brilliant By Scintilate What an incredibly fascinating yet touching story this is!Last Light Falling opens on the fifteenth birthday of twins, Arena and Gabe Powers, whose parents were killed in a tragic car crash six years previous. Although still trying to accept the passing of their parents, the story is told through the voice of Arena. We find out early that the twins first lived with their Mother’s sister until she had a nervous breakdown. After a year in the system, they were then taken in by a couple who had tragically lost their fifteen year old daughter – by way of being “collateral damage resulting from a gang dispute”. Since the twins were home schooled in their early childhood, it wasn't until they attended public school in second grade that they learned how poor they were and what it meant. Growing up, Arena’s Uncle Finnegan had taught Arena self-sufficiency, including the art of warfare and how to be invisible to the enemy. This is just the beginning of the unfolding of an incredible story that takes place in the year 2053. What I found so fascinating about this apocalyptic story is how real to life it just may be due to events such as a crashed US economy among other concerns of current day.The details included in so many different events takes incredible research or a very expansive background on the author’s part. Due to the brilliant realistic events that unfold, this story has a tendency of staying in your mind long after you finish it, which is a good thing.I highly recommend this book to all. I am blown away with the level of insight and intelligence to be able to write such a highly sophisticated unfolding of what very well could be, actual events.
