He searches far and wide, but some puddles are too big, some are too small, and some are already crowded with bathers. When Little Bird finds a good-looking puddle in a city park, one surprise after another spoils his bath. A ball comes bounce-bounce-bouncing. . . . A little girl comes flip-flop-flapping. . . . And a dog comes arf-arf-arfing . . . straight through Little Bird's puddle. But soon, Little Bird finds the perfect puddle to call his own. Appealing illustrations and a rhythmic text filled with repetition and fun sounds make this an ideal choice for storytime or laptime.

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—Russo's new picture book is about staying positive on a rainy day. Little Bird expresses his distaste for the rain, briefly, then he sings bits of familiar water-inspired songs ("Rain, Rain Go Away," "Rub-a-Dub-Dub") and heads for the nearest puddle. Before he can get fully wet, though, he's scared away by children, a dog, and other birds. But it's while he's flying high in the sky that he spots something "shining, sparkling, and shimmering down below." Most readers may not have big stone fountains in their yard, like the one the protagonist finds, but children who live in homes with a birdbath will learn they, too, are helping birds. Established parks, historical buildings, and an active multicultural community are depicted with gouache and colored pencil. This story has repetition, prepositions, and playful onomatopoeia, all of which make this a must-read for storytime; regardless of the weather.—Tanya Boudreau, Cold Lake Public Library, AB, Canada

About the Author MARISABINA RUSSO is the author and illustrator of numerous picture books for children, including The Bunnies Are Not in Their Beds, which was called "fresh and engaging" by Booklist; A Very Big Bunny, a Bank Street Best Book of the Year; and I Will Come Back for You: A Family in Hiding During World War II, based on the experiences of her grandmother's family during the Holocaust, which was named a Parents' Choice Gold Award Winner and an Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Award Winner. After sleeping through the night and the rain, little bird goes looking for a puddle in which to take a bath. But he struggles to find the perfect puddle. When the perfect puddle presents itself, little bird starts taking his bath only to be interrupted over and over. Will little bird find the perfect place to take a bath or will he have to fly home without? Russo has created an adorable story about a cute little bird. Close-ups of little bird alternate with shots of little bird flying through the city making this a great book for talking about perspective. Also, the story and illustrations are arranged perfectly for giving young readers a chance to predict what's coming, there's even some foreshadowing once little bird finds what he at first thinks is the perfect puddle.

He finally finds what he thinks is the perfect spot -- until passersby splash the whole thing away. Dejected, he heads back home, only to find a fountain on the way. Thrilled, he settles in for a nice, long splash. This is a cute, sweet story with large, colorful pictures. It would work well for a read-aloud, especially in conjunction with a unit on birds or a lesson on learning how to roll with the punches.

Why have their parents separated? And how can they get to the bottom of the mystery? They decide to switch hairstyles, manners, and addresses—and that is where the adventure begins.

20 of 20 people found the following review helpful. A great read-aloud book By Stuart Cooper I first discovered this book whilst searching for novels to serial-read to my class (I am a primary school teacher.) Having seen the original 'Parent Trap' and read 'Emil' as a boy, I felt Lottie and Lisa would be good to try. With one exception (a class containing mostly angry, macho boys), all my classes have enjoyed it, even loved it. Most children have seen the Parent Trap (sadly, most never saw the Hayley Mills version), and they are intrigued by the comparison in plots and characterisation. The reference to Shirley Temple and the double standards of American censorship at the time leave them puzzled, as does the excitement at the prospect that, when the busload of new girls arrives at the holiday home, 'one of them might have a ball (to play with'). Explaining to them that this book was written shortly after WW2 when toys were in short supply in Germany, helps them understand.WARNING: Any teacher reading this to a class of 8-12 year olds, be ready - Chapter 9 is an emotional minefield: I've noticed my voice getting shaky towards the end of it. Just letting you know.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. I am SO STUPID By Bonnie Perkins I read this book as a ten-year old and it stuck with me for what has been the next seventeen years. Warm, wonderful, very charming. The ORIGINAL, BEST and should have been the ONLY version of the Parent Trap. I wish I had known that this book would be largely forgotten, I would have held on to my copy to share with my own kids.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. interesting to compare with the two Disney movies By A Customer After seeing a good movie based on a book, do you like to read the book? So do I! That's why I read Erich Kastner's novel, translated under the title of "Lisa and Lottie." Lisa lives with Daddy, who is an opera conductor in Vienna. Lottie lives with Mommy, who is employed by a periodical in Munich. When they meet, there is none of the feuding which we see in both of the Disney movies. (Kastner was imprisoned by the Nazis for his pacifist convictions. He might have disapproved.) The girls take a trip to town and have their picture taken. The photographer makes an extra copy and sends it to the periodical in Munich as a curiosity. At the end of the camp season, the girls make the switcheroo. They exchange messages by General Delivery until Lottie meets Cruella's counterpart. The shock renders Lottie bed-ridden, so Lisa stops receiving messages. About this time, the news is slow in Munich. The editor shows Mommy the photograph of the twins and asks her to write a caption. Mommy realizes the truth and presses Lisa for an explanation. Lisa says that they have been exchanging letters, but she hasn't received any in a while. Mommy correctly infers that Lottie is ill. So Mommy and Lisa take a trip to Vienna, and voila! The book is a short children's novel, and I was able to read it in three hours. It's not nearly the tear-jerker that the movie is, but it was nice and entertaining. Incidentally, didn't Annie and Hallie both say that their birthday was October 14? That must have been for a touch of authenticity!

Air. I needed air. I was gasping, but my lungs refused to take any in. Jasmine's world is crumbling around her. Still reeling from the discovery of her parents' identities, she is forced to face the repercussions of her actions in the Helian Realm, while her beloved home is besieged by Helian attackers. And she still can't control her powers. Roxy is confronted by the realisation that she has travelled across the Realms for a boy who thinks she betrayed him. A boy dating the girl who sold her out. And even while freezing in the Arcan Realm it seems she can't escape Cinaer's grasp. Time is running out for the girls to save the world - and the boy - they love. But to have any chance of defeating Cinaer, they are going to have to work together. Cinaer is on a warpath and he's not giving up until he has secured the Helian throne - even if he has to reduce the Arcan Realm to dust in the process. Air is the gripping final installment of the Elements of Power trilogy.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A great end to a wonderful series By Dreams When I was first contacted to read and provide an honest review of Fire, I was excited by the possibilities the novel offered. Two books later, that excitement hasn't faded any.Our heroes were back again for their final adventure. But danger was closer than ever, and Cinaer wasn't taking any prisoners this time around. Roxy had finally found Brae, after her adventures in the last book, only the reunion does not go as planned. Things were just as uncertain for Jasmine as they were for Roxy. Just when things started coming together after her shock from book two, she's forced to come to terms with her actions that have led the story thus far.I loved Roxy. Somewhere along the way during Water, Roxy really became the focus of the novel for me. Jasmine was intriguing, but she was so focused on her lie that I couldn't really connect with her. Roxy on the other hand, I got her. Not only was she a fun character when she was all bad and fiery, but over the course of the three books she became a character that was really inspirational.I must say Heather James does a wonderful job with her character transformations. The characters really make this story succeed. Air, like the first two books, is told in alternating point of views between Roxy and Jasmine, so we really get to see the final stage of their transformation first hand. But other characters like Brae and Tristan have equally important and fascinating character arcs that she really brings through each page as well.Brae was ok. There was a moment where he really got on my nerves with how he reacted to a certain incident. I can't blame him for being upset, but it was a bit too aggravating. Not quite hypocritical, but like failure of perfection was intolerable. Like I said, I understand the why, but it made me like him less as a person. Which doesn't make a lot of sense as I sit here thinking about it because I cannot explain my dislike in a satisfactory manner.Tristan was a fun character from the moment he was introduced. Here was a boy who had games and schemes, but just when you think you saw him and understood what he had planned, Tristan completely changed things up. I loved that. He was unpredictable, and a bit -ok, a whole lot- on the badboy scale.I really cannot beheld accountable for my love of the badboy character. And boy does Tristan have a surprise or two left for us before the end.We have been building to this moment -war- since page one of Fire. The conflict between the four different elements, the four countries has reached the point where winning side will completely change the fate of their world. Cinaer was one hell of a baddie, and he had a lot planned for our heroes this go around. I hated him so much, but I loved him as a character. He was smart, and didn't make the stereotypical underestimating our heroes mistakes you sometimes see in books. The fantastical elements of this series really came out to play in this one. Everything we've learned about the Protectors and their powers was important and drove our story. There were elements mentioned in book one, things I'd forgotten about, that suddenly were back in action. There was a certain twist that I sat there trying to figure out how something happened but never saw the actual solution coming. The first part of this book seemed to be focused more on the characters and their lies and confessions and interactions finally coming to task. Every single choice and decision they have made since the beginning had a consequence and the author does a wonderful job pulling all there books together. While they still had some decisions to make before the end, once the action started, the drums were sounded and war was on.From there, the focus shifted to survival. Yet, it wasn't just survival as in living. It was about surviving as in not losing who you were too. I was very upset when the story ended. Don't get me wrong, I loved the ending, I just want more. I am not ready to give these characters up.A reread is certainly in the forecast.Words To Live By"Perhaps, she should learn not to place her trust in the people she has betrayed." (7%)"I was infinitely darker and more broken than she was. Even for him I could never be perfect; it just wasn't who I was. If I told him that, I would risk losing him. But if I kept quiet, I risked losing myself instead." (27%)"I'm not sure anymore whether people are telling me the truth, or telling me what I want they think I want to hear." (53%)OverallThis is my number one indie series that I have read in the past few years. If you like fantasy YA with complex characters, a fun world, and plot that keeps you guessing, then I highly recommend this series.

She writes with the same polished, inviting style that we’ve come to appreciate from her while at the same time throwing in a few twists that readers would never expect. James brings her fantasy world to the forefront of readers’ minds via her vibrant descriptions that allow readers to place themselves in the story. Although geared towards a YA novel this is definitely a story that will be enjoyed by readers of all ages. The dual perspectives in this novel really let you get to know a lot about the female leads. By this point in time readers know them quite well. I enjoyed seeing their perspectives on what was going on infused throughout. James brings the entire cast to life in a larger than life manner that really captures your attention. I love how she develops not only the individual characters but the different peoples of this world. Readers get to know the different customs associated with each. It’s truly a unique experience. As a whole, this was definitely a one of a kind conclusion to James’ series. James ties up all of the loose ends well while taking readers on a fantastical journey, but yet never closes off the possibility that there will be more to come. But I will warn readers that it is just that, a conclusion to the series. One should really read the series in order for the full effect. Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

Through out the other books, water and fire, i couldnt wait for heather to update. Air was the longest and most detailed. Roxy, Jasmine,Brae and Tristan matured throught the books. And Cinear. Well lets just say he was a fun character. I loved Air because it brought together the four realms and gave an indication that change was acceptable even if it would be a gradual process. Heather writes in a way that keeps u turning the pages and wanting to knw what happens next. I loved reading about Jasmines transformation frm scared naive girl to one who knew and understood her importance and hw to correct her mistakes. And i love roxy. Her fiesty attitude n her learning that the world didnt revolve around her. The girls journey was slow but they got there. Eventually. With help frm their friends. I was sad at their losses and happy at their triumphs. Congracts heather your book is truely remarkable. I did nt expect smething like this wen i started but am glad i did.

By TOM DIGRAZIA “George Bernard Shaw wisely wrote that ‘Perhaps the greatest social service that can be rendered by anybody to the country and to mankind is to bring up a family.’ Yet family conflicts remain widespread, destructive, and unresolved. Would it not be a far greater social service than Shaw imagined to improve our skills in family peacemaking, in preventing and resolving chronic family conflicts, and in transforming them into sources of learning and heartfelt connection? Light on Peacemaking: A Guide to Appropriate Dispute Resolution and Mediating Family Conflict is an insightful contribution to this effort, bringing together neurophysiology and mediation, nonviolent communication and parenting skills, spirituality, and common sense.”Kenneth Cloke, author of The Dance of Opposites: Explorations in Mediation, Dialogue and Conflict Resolution Systems Design.

Are you looking for a way to make Torah real, exciting, and understandable for your young children? My First Torah will help you present Torah to your children on their level. For each Torah portion I have written a beginner reader level version. The first five books of the Bible make up the foundation for everything else we find in the Scriptures. My desire in writing this book is to give your child an opportunity to read the Torah portion each week in words that they can read and understand. Then your new reader can read Torah all by themselves. Many parts of Torah can be more difficult to understand, let alone explain to children. I hope I have simplified that process for you. The tricky parts are still in there, but handled in a delicate, minimalist way to make them accessible for children. You can use My First Torah as a great way to include Torah in your school day. It can be used as a Torah beginning to the day. It can be used as a beginning reader. It also lends well to copywork. Our children have also read the Torah portion out loud on Shabbat, from My First Torah. I have chosen to refer to our Heavenly Father and Creator in a couple different ways. Sometimes I use Elohim, which means “Supreme Being.” We often find the personal name of our Creator in the text. Out of respect for anyone using this book, I have chosen to use YHVH. This is the English transliteration of the consonants we see in the Hebrew language. There is much debate over the proper pronunciation, or whether to pronounce the name. I wish to recognize that He has a personal name, but give your family the freedom to teach your children about His name as you see fit. The Torah presents some tricky topics, such as circumcision. But we are instructed to read the Torah to even the nursing infant. So I have chosen to include these topics where they appear. However, I have used a minimalist approach to allow you, as the parent, the freedom to teach more in depth as you see fit. You know your child best of all. My First Torah is an 8x10 full color paperback book with 27 hand drawn illustrations. It makes a great family read, because of the ease of understanding.

My First Torah, by Heidi Cooper

About the Author My name is Heidi Cooper, and I have been married since 2000 to my best friend. We homeschool our seven children, and live on a farm where we raise sheep, goats, ducks and chickens. I do my best to provide nourishing healthy food for my family, which involves a decent amount of time in the kitchen. It’s a full life, so I am always thankful for the time I can use for my writing. I graduated from the Institute for Children’s Literature, and am currently working on children’s books about Torah, and parenting books. I also write homeschool resources for Torah observant families. I try to be very real in my writing, only writing the material that my own family would use. It is a blessing to see other families benefiting from it as well. I enjoy writing about our daily life and homeschool journey at my blog (www.torahfamilyliving.com). You can get to know me a little better there.

AMAZING TORAH LEARNING BOOK By Marcia AMAZING is the only word to describe this book in so many ways Besides how much my grandchildren have learned about our Torah, Iwe also have enjoyed hearing them reading it to us on Shabot. I have never seen a book quite like this one. No one would regret purchasing it whether you wanted it for your children, grandchildren or even a gift so others could have a book to learn of our Torah.

Becker As a grandparent of seventeen, who understands the importance of the entirety of Scripture, I can highly recommend this resource. How important it is to make Scripture understandable to our precious young ones, in an accurate manner that is not watered down. My First Torah does that with great respect for the Holy Word in a way that hopefully will encourage your young reader to pursue a deeper understanding of its message.

It is a wonderful way for children to read the scriptures. The author allows the message of each portion to come through brilliantly in a family friendly summary. She is respectful of topics that are not always easy to teach young children. If I had a must have list for teaching your children biblical truth this would be my number one!

We have a number of others and were happy to see the new Zookeeper book when it became available. The books are fairly durable and I have only lost one to his over enthusiastic attempt to turn pages (where there was no page to turn.) I solved this issue for the replacement book and for all of my other Bizzy Bear books by using clear packing tape on the edges of the corners. That way, he can't use his fingers to pry the pages open and yet the moving parts of the page are still able to work. This book is extremely cute - his favorite parts are where the alligator opens and closes it sharp teeth and where the fish and the penguins swim around (by way of a turning wheel on the edge of the page.)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The best books for toddlers. The. Best. By Jen B. Bizzy Bear is our favorite. Hands down. The books are durable (trust me, my 17 year old is hard on them). They are fun with lots of moving parts and short, interesting stories that rhyme. We have stacks and stacks of books and without fail my toddler always grabs one of these when he sits down to "read." I'm pretty sure we will eventually own every title, because he gets a new one for every major holiday. We ordered "Zookeeper" and "Knight's Castle" to put in his Easter basket this year and he got "Fire and Rescue" and "Let's Get to Work" in his Christmas stocking a few months ago.You really can't go wrong with any of the Bizzy Bear titles.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Love Bizzy Bear By ajac0586 We LOVE Bizzy Bear! The books are so much fun and this one is no exception. They are the perfect size for little hands, but big enough to be able to see and enjoy the illustrations. The books are bright and colorful. The stories are fun. And the interactive parts are even better. I'm picky about books, but these make my top list. You can open and snap shut an alligator mouth and move a giraffe's head. You can move different animals and have fun interacting with them along with Bizzy. The one problem with this book is that the wheel you are supposed to turn is too far in the book. So the pegs that are there to help you then the wheel are really hard to reach, especially for little fingers. My kids have almost broken the book trying to get it to work and I am frustrated by it. Maybe I should have returned it, but he kids would have been really mad that I "took the book away" and I'm not sure the next book would have been different.

The Inside-Outside Book of London, by Roxie Munro

From Publishers Weekly PW called this "highly original" addition to Munro's Inside-Outside series "another triumph." Ages 3-8. Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal Grade 2-4-- Munro features some of London's most famous sites: Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace, the British Museum, the Houses of Parliament, the Tower Bridge, et al. Most locales are accorded two views, each in interesting perspective painted in watercolor, the details sharply edged in black in Munro's crisply familiar style. In this book Munro moves away from strict adherence to her "inside-outside" format, offering, as she did in her title on Washington D. C., a variety of viewpoints. The result is mildly uneven. Her outside vista of the British Museum seems to have been drawn from an upper floor of a nearby building and divorces it from the neighborhood in which it exists; the inside view is an unrevealing glimpse of the Egyptian mummy exhibit which seems crowded and uncomfortably placed on its double-page spread. The Buckingham Palace pages concentrate on two royal pageants: the changing of the guard, shown in a truncated view of the palace's east front; and the opening of Parliament, which is portrayed with a scene of a large crowd (back view) facing a coach passing in front of a generically official building. Much better is her witty take on the Victoria and Albert Museum, with visitors entering wearing modern day punk costume and the interior featuring an exhibit of costume from other eras. Her three-page section on the Tower of London is particulary fine, displaying its exterior, an interior as seen through a metal visor, and the wearers of such visors--models in a display of armor. As always, the final page includes basic information on the location, history, and facts of the sites depicted. The book displays a high level of craftmanship and careful research, offering a uniquely personal yet informative view of the city's treasures. --Christine Behrmann, New York Public LibraryCopyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review "The Inside-Outside Book of London can fairly stake a claim on a child’s attention even if he has visited England only in his imagination. In these sumptuous pages, New Yorker illustrator Roxie Munro combines clear lines and jewel-like colors to present a great city’s landmarks in idealized form—no scruffy news agents or kebab shops here. Rather, we are invited, mostly wordlessly, to take in the Greek Revival splendor of the British Museum, ride a double-decker bus along Regent Street, glimpse the queen passing in a gilded carriage, visit the magnificent houses of Parliament, and get a witty and surprising change of perspective at the Tower of London. A final page in small print relates factual details to supplement the drawings, which include a view from inside a British Rail train that will be familiar to anyone who has ever trundled through the London suburbs.” -The Wall Street Journal “Whether you’re an Anglophile hankering for a taste of London with its abundance of amazing architecture, or someone eager to simply see this capital city’s highlights from the comfort of your couch, this picture book is for you. Share the sights of the former Londinium with your kids. They’ll be impressed with its rich history found in every corner of town.” -Good Reads with Ronna"This is a wonderful book to introduce your child to London! . . . From riding atop a double-decker bus down Regent street to watching the Queen's Royal Procession, The Inside-Outside Book of London is sure to be a treasured volume for children and travelers of all ages." -WHAT'S UP FOR KIDS NEWSLETTER

They are a collection of copy-pasted prints from other McStuffins books (I know because we have several of those books) with SOME words below. The words do NOT form a story - there is no beginning or end like the other McStuffins stories (Bubble-rific, Engine 9 feeling fine, As big as a whale, Boomer gets his bounce back, Tea party tantrum, Knight in sticky armor, Bronto Boo boos, Snowman surprise, Knight time, etc.) and no 'moral' at the end. I hate giving a negative review for a much beloved book series. My kid loves McStuffins and so do we. However, the books are sturdy, with very few words and lots of big, bright pictures --- probably best suited for a much younger audience. My kid (almost 3 years old) loves books and was very quickly bored with these as they were short and did not tell a story. The 2 stars are for Amazons' quick response and refund for the item.

Between the Lines tells the story of three girls who become friends during the racially-charged aftermath of the 1967 Detroit Riots. Hattie Percha is crushed when the riots start on her tenth birthday, and when she must move away from her treasured childhood home and friends, attending public school for the first time, she’s afraid her life is over. Then, she meets Beverly Jo Nichols, her first black friend, and Crackers, a fearless tomboy. Despite opposition from Hattie’s mother and a racist teacher, the unlikely friends join forces. As the self-proclaimed Dream Girls, they challenge bigotry and intolerance, willing to do whatever it takes to hold onto what’s most precious to them all, their friendship.

Between the Lines, by Claudia Whitsitt

About the Author Growing up in Detroit, I was always concerned about differences and wanted life to be fair. I’m not sure if I was born this way or if my upbringing rooted this belief in me, but t didn’t take long for me to learn that life is anything but fair. Still, I made it my personal mission to try and help people settle their differences in an equitable manner, and be kind to everyone, no matter how different they were from me. When the Detroit riots started on my fifteenth birthday, like Hattie, I was devastated. But the riots also cemented this sense of wonder in me. Why couldn’t all people get along? Crackers, Beverly, and I met in college, and when I came to write a novel for my students, I couldn’t think of a better place to begin than with a story inspired by our true friendship, one that has lasted for over forty years. Some people would call me naïve, I suppose, but I firmly believe that with the right education, much like Jane Elliot’s diversity training, we could learn to celebrate differences and live together in peace. I’m sure that my sense of fairness, my fascination with learning more about how all of us negotiate the world, and my desire to make a difference led me to teaching and to the field of special education. Writing Between the Lines was a somewhat selfish endeavor for me. Now I can spend more time back in the classroom, where my heart belongs.

Must Have Historical Fiction By Lori LaBoe Between the Lines is a powerful piece of historical fiction that must be added to the reading list of every middle grades student. Set in Detroit, Michigan on the heels of the race riots of 1967, it captures the reader immediately with the innocence of a young girl waking on the morning of her tenth birthday. Within hours, harsh reality sets in and Hattie is distraught over the situation forced upon her. Hattie’s luck and her perception of the world around her change when she meets Crackers and Beverly. The three girls form a bond that cannot be broken. They exhibit unusual courage and prove to be wise beyond their years as they demonstrate the 4 Cs: critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity throughout their battle with bigotry. This book includes the topics of friendship, family relationships, acceptance and change—all themes any quality historical fiction must display. These fifth graders are caught up in coming of age changes and events but rise to the challenges with support of their family and the bond of a true friendship. The courage and compassion our favorite new characters embody show today’s young readers that they can have a hand in changing the views of society. I cannot wait to share this novel with my fifth graders and look forward to the rich discussions we will have and the changes I will witness in each of them.Mrs. Whitsitt visits my 5th grade classroom and is an inspiration to my students. Since she is an educator and spent many years in the classroom, she knows how to reach even the most reluctant writers! She enjoys her time back in the classroom as much as students enjoy her. If you are a middle grades teacher, ask her to come spend some time in your classroom, you will love her too!

Adding this novel to any unit focused on civil rights or diversity will improve students' understanding of the ugly events of our Nation's history, while keeping content age appropriate for middle elementary to middle school students. Parents could use this novel to engage their kids in discussions to help develop a sense of social responsibility, friendship, and morality. From the first chapter of this novel, readers are drawn in by the shocking events which occurred in Detroit. When Hattie, the main character, learns tanks are headed to her neighborhood in attempt to end the riots, you can't help but put yourself in her shoes. The clever characterization allows readers to easily connect to the characters. The view point of child highlights the senselessness of some of the actions and opinions of the past. Ultimately, this story is inspirational. The value of true friendship is revealed, and readers learn that children have the power to inspire change and open the eyes of others, even adults.

But I have got to say that this is a perfect book for young teen girls. What I perhaps liked most about this book is the idea that it's based on a true friendship between two white girls and a black girl. This story takes place during the aftermath of the Detroit Riots in 1967, a time when racial tensions were running high (to say the least). I think it's cool that there's real aspects tied in with the fiction. The author and her friends serve as the real life influences for this story, and like Hattie the riots started on her birthday. I think it's awesome that she was able to translate her story to a book for younger girls.I also liked that I could tell that this book was written by a teacher. The main character, Hattie, wants to be a writer when she grows up. Because she wants to be a writer, she is always working on her vocabulary and handwriting. I think this was a subtle way to introduce new words to young readers, without making it "too educational" or too much information dumping at once. In fact, this carried over to the historical aspects too. It felt like a story, even though these events happened in real life, at least in some capacity. It's educational without coming off as an essay or textbook, and I think that's a great note. The characters were distinct and likable. Hattie is the first character we meet, a white ten year old girl who has to move from her home to a new neighborhood, where she will attend a public school (instead of a private Catholic school) for the first time in her life. Beverly Jo is a black girl, the first one that Hattie has ever had. Crackers is an adventurous, gutsy, more tomboyish character. Together they are an awesome trio that stands strong, even in a society that tells them that they shouldn't be friends.I think this book is a great read for girls in the junior high school age bracket, so about 10-13 years old. It brings up important issues like standing up for what you believe in, fighting for equality, and the importance of friendship. It is reminiscent of the American Girl series books, but a bit thicker in length and a bit more detailed and in depth.I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
