The Leviathan slumbers and the Enox Unon lies defeated, and yet the world is forever shattered. Eons have passed since that age of lore, and all that remains are scattered clusters of isles as a result, all afloat across a sky of boiling mist. But another age of turmoil is set to begin again as four species of fractured humanity race towards repeating the same old mistakes. War. From its urbanized epicenter in the west, Frederick Wilhelm III and his Hierarch-dominated Iron Empire strike out, pushing ever further into the five skies of Aethosphere in a bid to provide the necessary mining opportunities for the Hanns Company monopoly. “Levitational Atmium supports the world,” they say after all, though it’s painfully obvious that this statement is to be taken more literally than figuratively once isles start to mysteriously die and fall into the Abyss. Meanwhile, far to the east, in a secluded Elwyn monastery, situated on the outskirts of the isolated Republic of Gardaya, Acolyte Evayah Dufleur sets world-changing gears in motion when she stumbles across a secret plot to use the orphans there as living weapons. Suddenly she’s left with no choice but to flee across the sky, and towards a confrontation with her past, present, and future. And then there’s the aged Candaran airship Captain Bar Bazzon who’s just trying to make a living while avoiding the numerous skeletons of his past, but with a ragtag crew of outlaws, runaways, and misfits things seem to go wrong more often than not; and that’s never truer then when his idealistic young Hierarch engineer Castaway rescues the enigmatic acolyte from the clutches of savage Glutborn raiders. Follow along as Evayah, Bar, Cast, and the rest of the crew set the Chimera steaming towards the last place on Aethosphere any of them ever wanted to go, all the while chased by pirates, raiders, zealots, rebels, imperials, and even ethereal beings. In the end, hard choices will have to be made, and the fate of not only an isle is at stake, but perhaps the entire world as well. Aethosphere: Coalescence of Shadows and Light is the first part in a sweeping steampunk-inspired saga that chronicles the adventures of the airship Chimera while her crew seeks to uncover a tangled web of destiny. A destiny spanning back to the origins of this broken world; to the monster lurking at the heart of it; to the prophetic dreams of the future; to the promise of an ancient machine. But do they have the wherewithal to set everything to right…? Or might all their good intentions just bring about the final horror that started so long ago?

The blurb looked intriguing and I nearly choked when it opened it on my iPad and found it to be over 950 pages. No problem. If this stinks or starts to flag, I can always bail out on it. I'm now over 400 pages in and I'm still reading. The plot is still coming together and, while some people might find that a complete turn-off, I don't care. The characters are great and the world is interesting. The only knock that I can level against the book is the editing. There are some misspelled words and some words that are simply incorrect. I expect that a spell check substitution went bad somewhere along the line.I'll update this review when I finish the book but, at the time of this writing, this is one of the better $2 you'll spend if you're looking for a long, steampunk-ish fantasy.
