Captain James Montgomery, a British soldier in India, is lost in a forest, trying to come to terms with the aftermath of the bloody revolution of 1857, when he has the strangest encounter with a bewitching woman, leaving him oddly happy but shattered. More than a century later, Prof. Singh, a popular history professor in Delhi, known for his strange public views on the occult goes missing. The last person to see him is another, not-so-popular associate professor, who claims Prof. Singh disappeared into thin air. Is it a simple case of university politics gone horribly wrong? Or could it be some ancient curse that has been revisited on the missing professor? Enter, Sita and Aron, two young journalists tasked with finding the truth by their over-zealous boss. They start asking questions and strange things begin to happen. Buried secrets and forgotten demons emerge, especially when they come across an old journal that seems to hold the clue to Prof. Singh’s disappearance. The frayed journal is the account of an English soldier, Captain Montgomery whose life takes the strangest turns. Is it the rantings of a mad-man or is it a true account holding the key to Prof. Singh's disappearence? The journal has been in the hands of Prof. Singh’s favourite student – Prof. Mukul Phadnis who has his own secrets to hide. Each must fight their own demons as they unconsciously get engulfed in a web of love, betrayal and terror that is part of Captain Montgomery’s life. He eventually rediscovers the magic that went missing from his life. But, does this magic come at a price for Aron, Sita and Mukul?

Strange Weather at the Ridge: A Delhi Story, by Vijetha S.N

From the Author   As a journalist for The Hindu in New Delhi, I once happened to visit the "Ridge," on a special story assignment on heritage walks. It was a horridly hot July day, with the heat - according to my overwrought imagination - feeling like the furnaces of hell. The "Ridge" is another name for the remains of the ancient Aravalli Hills whose rocks crop up all across the Capital and it has its strongest and most sinister formation at the Delhi University's North Campus. It is now riddled with wild monkeys and furtive couples but was once the front-line for one of India's most decisive battles - the first Indian war of Independence 1957 or as the British would call it; the Indian Mutiny of 1857. I had to walk all over the area, with the sweat dripping down my face, while zealously avoiding the monkeys whose cries seemed so strange, as to make them seem almost deamonish. The only relief was this sweet breeze that would suddenly waft in out of nowhere and made me feel strangely happy but melancholy at the same time. I came away with an impression that could not be shaken off and formed the genesis for this book. The Delhi University, which I would cover as part of my responsibilities as the university correspondent was undergoing a great deal of ferment with teachers and the administration locking horns over issues ranging from the banning of history textbooks due to right-wing pressure to faulty faculty appointments - all of which I was usually the first to report. I started observing sharply the minute characteristics of the people around me, and realized that there was a story hidden behind most of the faces that I saw. There are a lot of supernatural or other-worldly elements in this book, all of which can either be believed or taken with a pinch of salt. However, the essence of a good story, and I have always had the highest of respect for a good story - must have evil defeated in any way, but preferably by good. I hope you enjoy reading the book, as much as I did writing it.

The sleep I sacrificed that night and the fatigue I endured the next day was a small price to pay for an amazingly written book. Heard that the print edition is coming soon. Would buy a copy of that as well, a must have on any bibliophile's book shelf.
