They grew up in South America, traveling a lot and moving several times (and they’re still only about 80 percent certain that their parents weren’t secret agents). Kari now lives in California, while Tui lives in Boston, but they use every excuse they can to see each other (like, say, writing a book together).

A satisfying conclusion to a light-hearted YA fantasy series By Kenya Starflight While not my favorite series of all time, I enjoyed the first two books of the Sutherlands' "Menagerie" series. They were lighthearted reads with a likable cast and fun twists on mythical creatures that made them unique but still appealing, and a welcome breath of fresh air when many YA fantasies seem to get darker with every book. Sure, these books ramped up the stakes for their characters, but they still remained fun and lighthearted, without resorting to constant death and calamity to keep the tension up. And seeing as "Dragon on Trial," the second book in the series, ended on a cliffhanger, I had to see how the story panned out."Krakens and Lies" concludes the trilogy (if it remains a trilogy -- this could easily end up an ongoing series) quite nicely, and while it's not without its elements of deus ex machina, it's still enjoyable."Krakens and Lies" picks up where "Dragon on Trial" left off -- with Logan uncovering a plot by the Sterlings, Xanadu's wealthiest family, to turn the Menagerie into an amusement park. With help from an eclectic assortment of friends -- Zoe, youngest daughter of the Menagerie's caretakers; Blue, the laid-back son of the leader of the Menagerie's mermaids; Marco, an enthusiastic were-rooster and Logan's friend from school; and Keiko, the snarky, arrogant kitsune -- Logan sets off to discover just how much the Sterling family knows in a plot that will include jackalope wrangling, an escaped basilisk, a confusing message from a kraken, and a plot to destroy the Menagerie from within. And all the while Logan has to wonder if his dad is behind the sabotage of the refuge... and if the Sterlings had a hand in the disappearance of his mother.The writing in this series has been quite serviceable, not masterful but still competent and even fun. It's best suited for readers aged eight to twelve, and remains lighthearted and exciting throughout. I would have enjoyed a bit more attention to detail and description personally, as I'm sure even young readers can appreciate good writing and attention to detail. Still, I've certainly read far worse.The characters remain an enjoyable bunch. The main characters are well fleshed-out and enjoyable, and even the supporting characters mostly avoid cliches and have their own quirks that make them likable. I have a soft spot for Marco, the were-rooster, and appreciated that Zoe's friend Jasmin avoided the cliches of the "spoiled rich girl" that crop up so much in fiction. Even a past villain from the previous book, the school librarian who's obsessed with exposing the Menagerie, is given a sympathetic side here, and is shown to be not entirely malicious. And even the magical creatures, from the snobby unicorns to the over-dramatic phoenix to the mischievous gryphon family, are well-characterized and fun to get to know.If I have a complaint besides the writing, it's that the ending, while it ties things up nicely while still leaving an open door for possible sequels, has a distinct flavor of deus ex machina -- a sudden twist that feels stuck in with little foreshadowing, as if the author suddenly found they'd written themselves into a corner and needed a quick fix to patch things up. It's a minor complaint, however, and I still mostly enjoyed the ending regardless."The Menagerie: Krakens and Lies" is a satisfying conclusion to a fun series, a series that is perfect for younger readers who might not yet be ready for "Harry Potter" or "Fablehaven." And while the series ends nicely here, I wouldn't be surprised to find further adventures from the Menagerie and its volunteers and creatures further down the road...

This book was an excellent conclusion to this middle grade contemporary fantasy. I actually enjoy this series a lot more than Tui Sutherland’s Wings of Fire series. You definitely need to read the previous books in this series to understand what’s going on in this one.For the whole series someone has been sabotaging the Menagerie. It is up to Logan and Zoe to unravel the mystery of who this someone is. Things get worse when someone lets out the Basilisk and the mermaids (fearing for their safety and being generally difficult) decide go on strike. Logan fears the worst when they see his dad sneaking around the Menagerie at night.I really love the unique magical creatures featured throughout. In this book we get to meet the Kraken, a Chinese Dragon, and a few other very intriguing creatures.I also really enjoyed the solid friendships the characters develop; in this book we meet Matthew’s potential girlfriend and Zoe and Jasmine start to mend their broken friendship. Additionally I love the wonderful relationships the kids have with their families. The kids and the parents work together to solve problems, the parents are supportive and understanding the majority of the time. I love seeing a great story with functional families in it.This story is mostly a mystery where are characters have to solve the puzzle of who is sabotaging the Menagerie. I have really enjoyed this series a lot and would love to see a spin-off series about Logan and Zoe on future adventures with these crazy magical creatures.Overall this was an incredibly fun read. I highly recommend this whole series to fans of middle grade fantasy. I think it’s a book both middle grade readers and adults can enjoy. I would also recommend Brandon Mull's Fablehaven series.

By Brian L Hanzelka Okay, I wanted to give it 5 stars, but because of that loong wait (6 days after I pre-ordered it, too long a wait, SERIOUSLY, people) and that it is the end of the series (NOOOOOO!!!), I gave it 4. BUT, you MUST READ this WONDERFUL TRILOGY. I loved Ms. Sutherland's stupendous Wings of Fire series and decided to give this Menagerie trilogy a try (I've got this weakness for mythical creatures, you know?)Turns out, all the books had a fantastic storyline, and I loved the characters SO MUCH (especially Zoe Kahn and her Captain Fuzzbutt, a mammoth if you must know. Not exactly a mythical creature, but whatever). Logan is an... interesting character. I won't go in too deep 'cause it'll ruin the book, but he's nice, and he's got unexpectedly AMAZING skills. He's also got a knack for naming griffins. Well, I'm just really sad that the book is over. IF you've listened to the review and hopefully decided to read the trilogy (start with the first one, not this one), in this book, expect to find krakens, lies, ghost towns, and evil mayors.
