EVERY one has heard of Bridget, the little girl saint of Ireland. Her name is almost as well known as that of Saint Patrick, who drove all the snakes from the Island. Saint Bridget had long golden hair; and she was very beautiful. Many wonderful things happened to her that are written in famous books. But I suspect that you never heard what she did about the King s Wolf. It is a queer story.

Despite its subject matter, there's little in the way of hagiography here-- these saints tales are more sweet than religious. Taking their cue from the classic story of St. Francis of Assisi and the Wolf of Gubbio, the book's short stories (mostly short enough to be bedtime stories for young children) focus more on the saints' love for, and personal relationships with, individual animals, who all have names and personalities. This is a book that may be enjoyed by an adult, looking back to a long-gone era when children's books were not yet edgy or slapstick, but sweet and with a gentle moral... in this case, be kind to animals (which hardly seems oppressively 'teachy'!), but may equally be a a collection of fine bedtime stories to read to the two to three year old. Recommended, either for parenting or nostalgia.FCZ+The Book of Saints and Friendly Beasts

It wasn't. But that's just me being me. This book had a lot of helpful examples and tips for building self-esteem and maintaining a positive and healthy attitude. I would suggest this book to anyone wanting to become more self-confident or even someone looking to kick bad habits. Thanks Kyarra.

Summer is coming, and Clementine is not ready. She is not ready to start speaking to her father again, because she's still mad at him for eating meat. Instead, she has to express her sadness by giving him drawings of animals she knows would not want to be somebody's dinner. Then there is the new baby on the way. Clementine's mom sure doesn't seem ready. She's suddenly crazy about cleaning (Dad says she is nesting), but she doesn't even have a name picked out yet. Clementine just hopes the baby won't be a dud. What Clementine really isn't ready for is saying good-bye to her third grade teacher. She knows Mr. D'Matz is going to tell her all kinds of things that aren't true. Everything else may be changing around her, but that doesn't mean that Clementine has.But which is worse, saying good-bye, or not saying good-bye? From School Library Journal Gr 2–4—Third grade is ending and Clementine feels anxious as the school year comes to a close. She does not like saying goodbye, and she's especially not ready to bid farewell to Mr. D'Matz. She's also worried about her mother's nutty "nesting" behavior as the new baby's birth approaches, and she's so mad at her dad she isn't speaking to him. Everything wraps up neatly by the end, though, and Clementine is finally ready to face the summer and embrace the unknowns of fourth grade. Clementine is just as fresh and funny in this seventh and final title in the series as she was in the first book. It's sure to be popular for readers already familiar with Clementine and will doubtlessly engender a new set of fans to read each of the books about this entertaining character. VERDICT This last title in the popular and laugh-out-loud chapter book series is a must-have for library collections.—Gaye Hinchliff, King County Library System, WA

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful series! Highly recommended. By Heidi Grange I'm so sad that this is the last book in the series! I love Clementine, she's such a delightful character with all her idiosyncrasies. Clementine is reluctant to say goodbye to her third grade teacher and so avoids it like the plague. At the same time she juggles her anger at her father, her confusion with her mother's odd 'nesting' behavior, and her friend, Margaret's mother's wedding plans.Clementine is her usual charming self coming up with words like astoundishing to express herself and determined to not speak to her father until he agrees to stop eating meat. She's busy making a gift for Margaret's soon-to-be stepfather, drawing pictures of sad animals for her father, and coming up with names for her coming new sibling.I absolutely adore the relationships that Clementine has with her friends and family. They are far from perfect but it's clear that they love each other despite disagreements and flaws. The interactions between Clementine and her parents are especially endearing and her calling her brother by different vegetable names made me snicker. It's clear that despite her difficulties, Clementine will be just fine with her own enthusiastic spirit and her loving family to help her along the way.Marla Frazee's wonderful illustrations once again give additional life to Clementine's feelings and antics. This series is everything that contemporary middle grade literature should be.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Completely Clementine By BabyMo My 8 year old daughter and I read Completely Clementine together not too long after its release. We are big fans of the Clementine series, and have read all of the other books.Completely Clementine marks a turning point for our heroine. After six books, Clementine has finally reached the end of third grade. She is not very happy about this because she doesn’t like when things change. She is not looking forward to moving to a new class because she likes her teacher and her classroom.Meanwhile at home, her mother is pregnant with a new sibling, so Clementine is facing changes on all fronts. And if that were not enough, her father insists on eating meat. Clementine has recently become a vegetarian, and her attempts to dissuade her father from eating meat fail to have the desired impact. So what’s a girl to do when the world around her is changing in ways she can’t control? My daughter and I absolutely loved Completely Clementine. Clementine has a very unique way of looking at the world, and her outlook is charming and refreshing. Clementine is not rude or disobedient, but she is often inadvertently mischievous. This results in many silly situations, and my daughter often laughed so hard as I read out loud to her that we had to stop so she could compose herself. Clementine has a kind heart, and often thinks of other people. She loves her family very much, and she loves her teacher too.I would recommend Completely Clementine, as well as the rest of the Clementine series. The books do not have to be read in order, but I would recommend reading a few of the other titles before reading Completely Clementine. This will give you a better sense of appreciation for the character.

I cant believe they are making book on waylon clementines friend. in This book clementin stops speking to her dad because he is not being a vegetarian like the rest of the family. Clementine continues to draw sad pictures of animals for her dad. (Spoiler alerg coming up!) In the end clemintines mom has her baby early. Clementine has a perfect name for it but wants it to be the first words she will say to her father. She tells her mom to tell her dad that she has something to whisper in his ear.And guess what she wants to name her............SUMMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cute name huh

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. but gives it a try and ends up having a wonderful time. Plus By MS Rainbow of Friendship, written by Joni Klein-Higger and illustrated by Eileen Goldenberg, is a charming rhyming story about a girl who lives in a totally red town and ventures out to meet a diverse range of children in Rainbow Row City. At first she is reluctant to play with kids who look different than she does, but gives it a try and ends up having a wonderful time. Plus, she finds her life enriched by her new multi-colored friends. The story is a great way to introduce children to the wide world of diverse people who look, talk, and behave differently than they are accustomed to. Ms. Goldenberg’s brightly-colored, unique illustrations perfectly complement the text to keep kids engaged with this fun story that teaches an important lesson. Recommended for children ages 2 to 8, Rainbow of Friendship is a book that preschoolers and early elementary-aged kids (and their parents and teachers) will enjoy at home or in school. The Rainbow of Friendships written by Joni Klein-Higger tells a wonderful story in rhyme about the diverse sizes and shapes in a little red girl’s totally red town. Rainbow Row City with its different colors, is a great way to explain to children that it is safe to play with children that are not the same color or shape. At the same time, it provides an entertaining vehicle to teach this to children. I love the rhyming of the text. Eileen Goldberg does an excellent job of illustrating the meshing of colors as the child in the story moves through the different colors of Rainbow Row City.Suggested age range for readers: 2-8Reviewed by author Karen Carr, http://storylady3.wix.com/karen-m-carr

This book called out "Read me today." Okay, my attempt cannot match the legendary Green Eggs and Ham or the gifts of storyteller Joni-Klein Higger in her book Rainbow of Friendship, suggested for ages 2-8. With the catchy rhythms reminiscent of Dr. Seuss and the stunning illustrations by Eileen Goldenberg, Rainbow of Friendship promises to become a staple in pre-school and early childhood programs across the country. That this charming, important story sings a message of tolerance is icing on a very sweet cake! I loved it!

"Children of all ages will delight in its song and story." —Charles Martin, author of Signs & Wonders

"Davey McGravy, Davey McGravy,a name to conjure with,to dream with by the cedar treesout in the rainy woods."

In a misty, faraway-feeling "land of rain," Davey McGravy lives with his father and brothers, but mourns his missing mother. He follows the rhymes in his head into a forest of ferns, moss, and cedar trees where he meets animals wise and strange. A coaxing crow urges him onwards. A consoling peacock tells him that nothing is really lost. A fierce lioness frightens him. Following their voices, Davey travels deeper and deeper into the mysterious woods. Then he must find his way home, to a father who is sad but loving, and brothers who care for him no matter how they fight.

Caught between his forest-world and the world of school, shopping, and family life, Davey wanders his way through grief. With playful and evocative verse, poet David Mason delivers him back to his boyhood but leaves the mysteries of love intact. Full of humor and melancholy, Davey McGravy movingly captures the longing of a child for his lost mother.

"Across a series of poems, accompanied by early-Sendakesque etchings by artist Grant Silverstein, we meet a little boy named Davey McGravy living in the tall-treed forest with his father and brothers. A few tender verses in, we realize that Davey is caught in the mire of mourning his mother. Without invalidating the deep melancholy that has set in, Mason makes room for the mystery of life and death, inviting in the miraculous immortality of love…Only a rare poet can merge the reverence of Thoreau with the irreverence of Zorba the Greek to create something wholly unlike anything else — and that is what Mason accomplishes in Davey McGravy." —Brain Pickings

"From his first full-length narrative poem, The Country I Remember, to his extraordinary verse novel, Ludlow, David Mason's ambition to expand the realm of narrative in contemporary verse has been central to his poetic project, even as successive collections revealed him as one of the best lyric poets of his generation. The latest proof of Mason's necessity, Davey McGravy, is both a vibrant celebration of language as play and the moving tale of how a young boy discovers, through heartbreaking loss, the transformative powers of the imagination. Children of all ages will delight in its song and story." —Charles Martin, author of Signs & Wonders

David Mason is the author of numerous books of poetry and the verse-novel Ludlow. He was poet laureate of Colorado from 2010 to 2014, and he now divides his time between Colorado and Oregon.

Grant Silverstein, the illustrator, specializes in etchings.

Davey McGravy, by David Mason

Review

"Children of all ages will delight in its song and story."—Charles Martin, author of Signs & Wonders

About the Author David Mason: David Mason is the author of numerous books of poetry and the verse-novel Ludlow. He was poet laureate of Colorado from 2010 to 2014, and he now divides his time between Colorado and Oregon.

It would be great for a child who lost one of their parents and needs some help understanding that being sad is ok as it is to have fun even when you’re sad. There’s a great little stanza in here; "Just tell me where you've gone, whether you're near of far.I'll fly until I find youno matter where you are."I dock it down from 5 stars because while it has rhyming schemes throughout, the author has a few stanzas and lines that don’t rhyme and really bug or throw off the smooth transitioning. But other than that, it’s a great heart felt book.

This title came up in a list of recommended books about children grieving... and though in my 60s, that's exactly who I am right now. Reading about Davey's subtle experiences as he grieves for his mother helps me understand and appreciate what I'm going through.

I just bought three copies to give to children of friends and friends who remember a childhood lived next to the woods and water. And all in poetry...
